Postmortem examination of a captive-bred American kestrel (Falco sparverius) showed numerous white necrotic foci 1-2 mm in diameter throughout the liver and spleen. The results of light and spleen. The results of light and electron microscopic studies and experimental transmission to a captive American kestrel and a barred owl (Strix varia) suggests a herpesvirus similar to those dsecribed for owls and other falcons in the U.S. This is the first report of a naturally occurring case of inclusion body disease of falcons in the American kestrel.  相似文献

Ostriches were filmed running at maximum speed, and forces on the feet were calculated. Measurements were made of the principal structures in the legs of an ostrich. Hence peak stresses in muscles, tendons and bones were calculated. They lay within the range of stresses calculated for strenuous activities of other vertebrates. The ostrich makes substantial savings of energy in running, by elastic storage in stretched tendons. Pachyornis was a flightless bird, much heavier than ostriches and with massively thick leg bones. These bones are shorter than predicted for its estimated body mass, by extrapolation from allometric equations for flying birds. An attempt is made to calculate the stresses that acted in the leg bones in running, for all possible patterns of leg movement. The stresses were probably rather low, unless Pachyornis was capable of running fast. It is argued that the optimum factor of safety for moo leg bones may have been exceptionally high, as a consequence of the absence of predators.  相似文献

The karyotype of the osprey consists of 74 chromosomes. There are no large macrochromosomes and no typical microchromosomes. Autosome No. 2 has a prominent secondary constriction in the long arm. The Z chromosome is similar in size and shape to the largest autosome, the W is a small metacentric. Among the Falconiformes, the osprey karyotype mainly resembles the karyotypes of some accipitrid species. However, certain characteristic features of the karyotype, a unique secondary constriction chromosome and absence of microchromosomes, speak in favour of maintaining the osprey in a family of its own, Pandionidae.  相似文献

The hemoglobin of adult American rhea (Rhea americana) and ostrich (Struthio camelus) contains two components identified to be HbA (alpha 2A beta 2) and HbD (alpha 2D beta 2). The amino-acid sequence of alpha D-chains from HbD of adult American rhea and ostrich has been determined. The sequence was studied by Edman degradation of tryptic peptides and chemical cleavage products in a liquid phase sequencer. By homologous comparison with pheasant HbD (Phasianus colchicus colchicus), the alpha D-chains of American rhea differ by 28 amino-acid exchanges, the alpha D-chains of ostrich by 23 residues. These differences are higher than those observed for alpha A- as well as for beta-chains of HbA from the same species. The ratio of amino-acid exchanges for beta:alpha A:alpha D for American rhea and ostrich is found to be 1:5.5:6.5. At present the reason for the differences in evolution rates for the beta-, alpha A- and alpha D-chains of bird hemoglobins is still unclear.  相似文献

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) molecular forms were studied in extracts of ostrich hypothalamus and extrahypothalamic brain using high performance liquid chromatography, radioimmunoassay with region-specific antisera and assessment of luteinizing hormone (LH)-releasing activity using chicken dispersed pituitary cells. Two molecular forms of GnRH with chromatographic, immunological and biological properties identical to those of Gln8-GnRH and His5,Trp7,Tyr8-GnRH were demonstrated in both the hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic brain extracts. A greater proportion of His5,Trp7,Tyr8-GnRH was present in the hypothalamus than in extrahypothalamic brain. It is likely that these two forms of GnRH are present in all bird species, since the chicken and the ostrich have evolved separately.  相似文献

Three colipases were purified from pancreas of two birds (ostrich and turkey) and one mammal (dromedary). After acidic and/or heat treatment and precipitation by sulfate ammonium and then ethanol, cofactors were purified by Sephadex G-50 gel filtration followed by ion-exchange chromatography first on Mono S and then on Mono Q. One molecular form was obtained from each species with a molecular mass of approximately 10 kDa. Cofactors were not glycosylated. The N-terminal sequences of the three purified cofactors showed high sequence homology. A 90 amino acid sequence of the ostrich cofactor was established based on peptide sequences from four different digests of the denaturated protein using trypsin, chymotrypsin, thermolysin, or staphylococcal protease. This sequence exhibited a high degree of homology with chicken and mammal cofactors. Bile salt-inhibited pancreatic lipases from five species were activated to variable extents by colipases from bird and mammal origins. The bird pancreatic lipase-colipase system appears to be functionally similar to homologous lipolytic systems from higher mammals. Our comparative study showed that mammal colipase presents a lower activation level toward bird lipases than the bird counterpart. Three-dimensional modeling of ostrich colipase suggested a structural explanation of this fact.  相似文献

A review of the Holocene records of the osprey (Pandion haliaetus) in Central Europe indicates an immigration around 10,000 years BP at the latest. During the middle Holocene—9,000–5,000 years BP—the species seems to have been common in the south-western Baltic region and perhaps also in Switzerland, but scarce in the rest of Central Europe. After a complete lack of osprey remains for nearly 4,000 years up to medieval times, a few records again suggest a sporadic distribution of this species in the south-western Baltic. In early modern times, the osprey recolonised north-eastern Germany and, during the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth century, bred in colony-like densities. Because of relentless persecution and, later, contamination with pesticides, osprey populations collapsed. Recently, the Central European populations have been slowly increasing again. The significance of the subfossil findings is discussed and possible reasons for their scarcity are outlined.  相似文献

A herpesvirus was isolated from the liver of a captive-bred American kestrel (Falco sparverius) which had died of inclusion body disease. Initial isolation was achieved in chicken embryo fibroblasts after three blind passages. Cell-adapted virus produced a distinct rounding of CEF cells within 24 to 48 h. Biologic and serologic tests suggested that the kestrel virus is similar to falcon herpesvirus and pigeon herpesvirus and is at least partially related to owl herpesvirus. However, serologic tests indicated that the kestrel herpesvirus is neither related to infectious laryngotracheitis virus nor to a herpesvirus from a psittacine bird; (Eupsittula canicularis) with Pacheco's parrot disease. This is the first report on the recovery of a herpesvirus similar to falcon herpesvirus from an American kestrel with naturally-occurring inclusion body disease, and on the serologic comparison between falcon herpesvirus and a psittacine herpesvirus.  相似文献

(1) 2,3-Diphosphoglyceric acid (2,3-DPG) is present in erythrocytes (RBC) of the 37-day ostrich embryo at a concentration of 3.7 μmole/ml RBC, representing 23.5% of the cell phosphate. (2) Inositol tetraphosphate (inositol-P4) is absent in red cells of the 37-day embryo, appears in the RBC about 63 days after hatch, and thereafter gradually accumulates to a level of 2.8 μmole/ml RBC in the adult bird, representing 30–35% of the cell phosphate. (3) Inositol pentaphosphate (inositol-P5) is present in the erythrocytes of the 37-day embryo at a concentration of 0.8 μmole/ml RBC, reaches a peak level of 2.9 μmole/ml RBC by Day 63 after hatch, and thereafter declines to a level of 1.1 μmole/ml RBC in the adult bird. (4) The crossover time where the molar concentrations of inositol-P5 and inositol-P4 are equal in the erythrocyte appears to be about 150 days after hatch. (5) The p50 of whole blood from the 37-day ostrich embryo, 5-day ostrich chick, and adult ostrich was 15.4, 31.8, and 24.9 Torr. The p50 of whole blood immediately after hatch correlates best with an abrupt rise in ATP concentration but after 54 days posthatch correlates best with the appearance of increasing concentrations of inositol-P4 and the decrease in concentrations of ATP and inositol-P5. (6) The appearance of inositol-P4 in the cells could be an adaptive mechanism for regulating oxygen supply by switching to a modulator which maintains a higher oxygen affinity than would a predominance of inositol-P5.  相似文献

Lesser kestrel, Falco naumanni, is a colonial and migratory species breeding in part of the Mediterranean Basin and part of central Asia and north-east of China and Mongolia. This species is catalogued in IUCN red list category as vulnerable. Twenty microsatellite loci were selected from libraries enriched in AC or AG tandem repeats and specific PCR were devised from their flanking sequences. Most microsatellites (14) were found polymorphic among 30 individuals of F. naumanni representing 20 reproduction areas of the species in the region of Extremadura, Spain. Polymorphisms were detected by size variation of the amplified loci, which allele number and observed heterozygosity ranged from 3 to 20 and from 0.300 to 0.933, respectively. Cross-species amplification showed that 13 of selected loci were also found polymorphic in common kestrel species (Falco tinnunculus). Novel polymorphic microsatellites will serve to conservation studies in lesser kestrel.  相似文献

We improve the taxon sampling for avian phylogeny by analyzing 7 new mitochondrial genomes (a toucan, woodpecker, osprey, forest falcon, American kestrel, heron, and a pelican). This improves inference of the avian tree, and it supports 3 major conclusions. The first is that some birds (including a parrot, a toucan, and an osprey) exhibit a complete duplication of the control region (CR) meaning that there are at least 4 distinct gene orders within birds. However, it appears that there are regions of continued gene conversion between the duplicate CRs, resulting in duplications that can be stable for long evolutionary periods. Because of this stable duplicated state, gene order can eventually either revert to the original order or change to the new gene order. The existence of this stable duplicate state explains how an apparently unlikely event (finding the same novel gene order) can arise multiple times. Although rare genomic changes have theoretical advantages for tree reconstruction, they can be compromised if these apparently rare events have a stable intermediate state. Secondly, the toucan and woodpecker improve the resolution of the 6-way split within Neoaves that has been called an "explosive radiation." An explosive radiation implies that normal microevolutionary events are insufficient to explain the observed macroevolution. By showing the avian tree is, in principle, resolvable, we demonstrate that the radiation of birds is amenable to standard evolutionary analysis. Thirdly, and as expected from theory, additional taxa breaking up long branches stabilize the position of some problematic taxa (like the falcon). In addition, we report that within the birds of prey and allies, we did not find evidence pairing New World vultures with storks or accipitrids (hawks, eagles, and osprey) with Falconids.  相似文献

The muscle fibers of the pectoralis (M. pectoralis pars thoracicus) of a male and a female ostrich (Struthio camelus) and a male and a female emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) were studied histochemically for succinate dehydrogenase and myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase. Slow-tonic (ST), fast-twitch oxidative-glycolytic (FOG) and fast-twitch glycolytic (FG) fibers were approximately equal in number and distribution in the emu pectoralis examined. In the ostriches, both predominantly FG and approximately equal areas, were present. ST fibers were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) larger than the similarly (P ≥ 0.05) sized FG and FOG fibers in the female ostrich and emus. In the male ostrich ST fibers were smaller (P ≤ 0.05) than FG fibers, neither of which were significantly (P ≥ 0.05) different from FOG fibers. The ratites have the greatest percentage and widest distribution of ST fibers found in any avian pectoralis studied to date. This could represent the ancestoral avian pectoralis, neoteny or an effect of flightlessness. ST fibers are used in the maintenance of posture, which is probably the main role of the pectoralis in the emu. The predominantly FG areas of the ostrich are indicative of an additional function, namely, behavioural display. Sexual dimorphism in the ostrich pectoralis is strongly suggested.  相似文献

The study of cross-species pathogen transmission is essential to understanding the epizootiology and epidemiology of infectious diseases. Avian chlamydiosis is a zoonotic disease whose effects have been mainly investigated in humans, poultry and pet birds. It has been suggested that wild bird species play an important role as reservoirs for this disease. During a comparative health status survey in common (Falco tinnunculus) and lesser (Falco naumanni) kestrel populations in Spain, acute gammapathies were detected. We investigated whether gammapathies were associated with Chlamydiaceae infections. We recorded the prevalence of different Chlamydiaceae species in nestlings of both kestrel species in three different study areas. Chlamydophila psittaci serovar I (or Chlamydophila abortus), an ovine pathogen causing late-term abortions, was isolated from all the nestlings of both kestrel species in one of the three studied areas, a location with extensive ovine livestock enzootic of this atypical bacteria and where gammapathies were recorded. Serovar and genetic cluster analysis of the kestrel isolates from this area showed serovars A and C and the genetic cluster 1 and were different than those isolated from the other two areas. The serovar I in this area was also isolated from sheep abortions, sheep faeces, sheep stable dust, nest dust of both kestrel species, carrion beetles (Silphidae) and Orthoptera. This fact was not observed in other areas. In addition, we found kestrels to be infected by Chlamydia suis and Chlamydia muridarum, the first time these have been detected in birds. Our study evidences a pathogen transmission from ruminants to birds, highlighting the importance of this potential and unexplored mechanism of infection in an ecological context. On the other hand, it is reported a pathogen transmission from livestock to wildlife, revealing new and scarcely investigated anthropogenic threats for wild and endangered species.  相似文献

Approximately 200–250 pairs of kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) breed in Berlin, preferentially in nest boxes. From 2002 to 2004, ten monitoring sites (breeding sites) characterised by different housing structure, land utilisation, vegetation cover and degree of building density were studied in Berlin: four in the city centre, three in a mixed zone and three in the outskirts. All pairs bred in nest boxes, so the reproductive success could easily be determined. Pellets, and feathers of bird prey species, were collected during the breeding seasons, and the food spectrum was determined based on these remains. There was no significant difference in the reproductive success of the kestrels between the three zones. Data on the number of fledged young indicated a sufficient food supply. In total, 9 species of mice and shrews, 23 bird species and 31 beetle species were identified as prey of kestrels. Urban kestrels specialise in hunting birds if mice and shrews are not readily available, with the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) as the favoured prey bird. Of note are anthropogenic food items, such as cutlet bones, that were found only in the city centre. This shows that the kestrel can adapt itself to humans with regard to its diet. There was no urban gradient with regard to reproductive success, but there was with the composition of food, such as the domination of bird prey in the city centre. The number of individual items of bird prey decreased from the centre to the outskirts. In conclusion, the results show that the kestrel is an opportunistic species which survives well anywhere in the city of Berlin.

Molecular genetic maps can provide information for the identification and localization of major genes associated with quantitative traits. However, there are currently no published genetic linkage maps for any ratites. Herein, a preliminary genetic map of ostrich was developed using a two-generation ostrich reference family by linkage analysis of 104 polymorphic microsatellite markers, including 40 novel markers reported in this study. A total of 35 microsatellite markers were placed into 13 linkage groups. Five linkage groups are composed of three or more loci, whereas the remaining eight groups each contained two markers. The sex-averaged map spans 365.4 cM. The marker interval of each linkage group ranges from 5.3 to 25.4 cM, and the average interval distance is 16.61 cM. The male map covers 342.7 cM, with an average intermarker distance of 15.58 cM, whereas the female map is 456.7 cM, with the average intermarker spacing of 20.76 cM. In order to screen the orthologous loci between ostrich and chicken, all of the flanking sequences of the 104 polymorphic loci, nine monomorphic loci and a further 12 reported microsatellite loci for ostrich were screened against the chicken genomic sequence using the BLAST algorithm (Altschul et al., 1990), and corresponding orthologs were found for 13 sequences. The microsatellite loci and genetic map developed in this study will be useful for QTL mapping, population genetics and phylogenetic studies in the ratite. In addition, the 13 orthologous loci identified in this study will be advantageous to the construction of a comparative genetic map between chicken and ostrich.  相似文献

The subdivisions of the trigeminal nerve (N. ophthalmicus R. medialis and N. intramandibularis) innervating the upper and lower bill tip, respectively, were well developed in both the ostrich and emu and displayed extensive branching. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that both nerves displayed features typical of a mixed, peripheral nerve. Nerve fibre size in the ostrich and emu was larger than that reported in domestic poultry. There were a significantly higher number of myelinated nerve fibres in the N. ophthalmicus R. medialis in the emu by comparison with the same nerve in the ostrich, or by comparison with the N. intramandibularis of either species. As myelinated nerve fibres supply Herbst corpuscles, and these structures have been demonstrated in this region in these two species, this may indicate that the upper bill of the emu is more sensitive to vibrational stimuli than the upper bill of the ostrich or the lower bill of both species. The large size of the nerve fibres, the high nerve fibre count and the particular distribution of the nerves in the bill tip support the existence of a well‐developed sensory area in this region of the ostrich and emu.  相似文献

Are predatory birds effective secondary seed dispersers?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We have studied the unusual phenomenon of secondary seed dispersal of Lycium intricatum seeds on a small oceanic Atlantic island (Alegranza, Canarian Archipelago) in which a small frugivorous lizard ( Gallotia atlantica ) and two different predatory birds participate, a shrike ( Lanius excubitor ) and a kestrel ( Falco tinnunculus ). Endemic lizards that are common prey of both bird species consume Lycium fruits. Lizard remains were significantly matched with the presence of Lycium fruits in the regurgitation pellets of the two predatory birds. Seeds were found in 7.3% of the lizard droppings, 31.0% of kestrel pellets and 55.7% of shrike regurgitations. The mean number of seeds per dropping or pellet was 4.8 ±4 in lizard, 20.2 ±34.5 in shrike and 6.7 ±8.1 in kestrel. The percentage of viable seeds showed significant differences among all four treatments, decreasing in the following direction: seeds collected directly from plants (98.0%), shrikes (88.0%), lizards (72.3%), and kestrels (31.7%). Seeds from Lycium fresh fruits and shrike pellets showed significantly higher germination rates than those from lizard droppings and kestrel pellets. While lizards and shrikes are effective seed dispersers, kestrel gut treatment decreases seed viability. Seed viability is always higher than seed germination in each of the four treatments. In this island environment, Lycium seeds are under an important random influence during the seed dispersal process. Secondary seed dispersal seems to acquire a relevant dimension in small and remote insular environments or isolated continental systems where interactions among the different elements involved are intense, all of them are abundant native residents, and they have been coexisting for a long time. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 75 , 345–352.  相似文献

The cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1–3 families are involved in xenobiotic metabolism, and are expressed primarily in the liver. Ostriches (Struthio camelus) are members of Palaeognathae with the earliest divergence from other bird lineages. An understanding of genes coding for ostrich xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme contributes to knowledge regarding the xenobiotic metabolisms of other Palaeognathae birds. We investigated CYP1–3 genes expressed in female ostrich liver using a next-generation sequencer. We detected 10 CYP genes: CYP1A5, CYP2C23, CYP2C45, CYP2D49, CYP2G19, CYP2W2, CYP2AC1, CYP2AC2, CYP2AF1, and CYP3A37. We compared the gene expression levels of CYP1A5, CYP2C23, CYP2C45, CYP2D49, CYP2G19, CYP2AF1, and CYP3A37 in ostrich liver and determined that CYP2G19 exhibited the highest expression level. The mRNA expression level of CYP2G19 was approximately 2–10 times higher than those of other CYP genes. The other CYP genes displayed similar expression levels. Our results suggest that CYP2G19, which has not been a focus of previous bird studies, has an important role in ostrich xenobiotic metabolism.  相似文献

There are many reports of cryptosporidial infection in ostriches, but none with molecular characterization of the isolates. A study was undertaken for the characterization of a Brazilian Cryptosporidium sp. ostrich isolate by using molecular phylogenetic analysis of fragments of the 18S ribosomal DNA, heat-shock protein (hsp) 70 coding gene, and actin coding gene. Biological studies were accomplished by the experimental inoculation of chickens via oral or intratracheal routes with fresh ostrich Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts. Molecular analysis of nucleotide sequences of the 3 genes by using neighbor-joining and parsimony methods grouped the ostrich isolate as a sister taxon of Cryptosporidium baileyi and showed that the ostrich isolate is genetically distinct from all other known Cryptosporidium species or genotypes. None of the inoculated chickens developed infection as determined by mucosal smears, histology, and fecal screening for oocysts. Although biological and molecular studies indicate that the ostrich Cryptosporidium is a new species, further studies regarding morphological, biological, and molecular characteristics of other ostrich isolates are required to confirm the species status of the ostrich Cryptosporidium.  相似文献
