The effects of four seasons of semen collection and of artificial insemination on conception in dairy cows were studied. The solstices and equinoxes (December, March, June and September) defined the beginning and/or end of each season. Semen was collected from 973 progeny-test bulls over 8 years at the two Norwegian AI stations at 60.8 degrees N and 63.4 degrees N where artificial light was used to provide a minimum photoperiod of 10 h/day. The effect of using semen of elite bulls during progeny testing and after selection as elite sires also was investigated. Norwegian Red (NRF) cows were inseminated over a 7-year period using progeny test semen and over the last 4 years of the same period using the semen of the elite sires. The probability of conception to only first inseminations for cows up to, and including, the fifth lactation was assessed by 56-day non-return rate (56d NRR) and calving rate. Two data sets were analysed which excluded cows culled within 270 days of AI or included such cows as non-calving. The reasons for culling were categorised as those for fertility problems or all other reasons. Semen was used for AI irrespective of the season in which it had been collected. Season of semen collection did not affect 56d NRR but calving rate was significantly higher (by 0.5-0.8%, approximately; P < 0.01) for semen collected in the December-March period, when photoperiod was increasing, than at other times of the year. The season in which AI was performed showed a peak of 56d NRR in spring for heifers (P < 0.01) and in summer for parous animals (P < 0.01). For calving rate, however, no seasonal peak was found in heifers, whereas pluriparous cows had much higher calving rates in summer and autumn/early winter than late winter and spring (P < 0.01). Semen of elite sires resulted in higher calving rates by 0.5 (NS) to 1.9% (P < 0.01) when used after selection than when used during progeny testing. The difference between the calving rate achieved when the semen from elite sires was used during progeny testing and after selection indicates that farmers select different classes of cows for submission to AI by progeny test bulls and sires. The 56d NRR was not as good as calving rate for assessing seasonal and other effects on conception rates.  相似文献

Reduced reproductive performance of dairy cows during the summer is often associated with elevated temperature. Semen collected and cryopreserved during the summer may be of low quality and might contribute to the compromised fertility of dairy cows during this season. The present study examined the association between seasonality, semen quality and its potential to survive cryopreservation. A comparison between semen collected during the summer (July to August) and that collected during the winter (November to December) revealed the summer semen to be inferior, as reflected by low motility and high mortality of sperm. Furthermore, samples that were defined as good quality had changes in lipid concentration and fatty-acid composition in both the seminal plasma and cell compartment. In particular, semen collected during the summer had reduced levels of polyunsaturated arachidonic acid (20:4; P<0.05) and decreased levels of linoleic acid (18:2; P<0.05) in the cell compartment; corresponding reductions in cholesterol (P<0.06) and fatty-acid concentrations (P<0.001) were detected in seminal plasma of semen collected during the summer. In addition, we provided the first evidence for the existence of a very-low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLr) in bovine sperm, suggesting a mechanism for sperm utilization of extracellular lipids. Interestingly, the expression of VLDLr was three-fold greater in samples collected during the winter than in those collected in the summer (P<0.01) and was negatively associated with saturated fatty-acid concentration (P<0.018) but not with that of cholesterol. An opposite pattern was noted for samples obtained during the summer; mRNA expression of VLDLr was negatively associated with cholesterol concentration (P<0.01) but not with that of saturated fatty acids. Such modifications associated with extracellular lipid utilization and fatty-acid composition might explain, in part, the reduced quality of summer semen.  相似文献

Intrafollicular insemination (IFI) is based on direct introduction of a sperm suspension into a preovulatory follicle. To our knowledge, the first cases of IFI resulting in pregnancy of the cow are reported here. The experiment was performed on a dairy herd with low fertility during the warm season of the year. Following the sequence of estrus detection, one in three inseminations was intrafollicular (n = 17), whereas deposition of semen was performed into the uterine body (IUI) in the remaining cows (n = 33). Approximately 0.06 ml of a seminal dose containing five million spermatozoa (one quarter of a commercial seminal dose in a 0.25 ml French straw) was injected trans-vaginally into the preovulatory follicle in the IFI group. Four (23.5%) and 3 (9%) cows of the IFI and IUI groups, respectively, became pregnant. On days 8-11 post-insemination, ovulation failure was registered in 3 (18%) and in 4 (12%) cows of the IFI and IUI groups, respectively. Our results suggest that IFI could be used as an alternative procedure to the usual deposition of semen into the uterus in cows of low fertility.  相似文献

The effects of low-dose artificial insemination (AI) on pregnancy rates have seldom been studied in lactating dairy cows. We evaluated the pregnancy results after AI with doses of 2 and 15 million frozen-thawed spermatozoa and the effect of semen deposition in lactating dairy cows. A total of 284 first inseminations with 2 million spermatozoa and 312 first inseminations with 15 million spermatozoa were performed on 480 dairy farms. Low-dose inseminations (2 million spermatozoa) under field conditions in commercial dairy herds, without estrus synchronization, generally resulted in significantly reduced pregnancy rates compared with normal doses (15 million spermatozoa). The bull x technician effect on fertility was statistically significant. This finding indicates that there is a high variability in fertility among bulls using 2 million spermatozoa per dose. The semen deposition site did not influence pregnancy rates. It is concluded that a dose of 2 million frozen-thawed spermatozoa is probably too low for most bulls to achieve acceptable pregnancy rates in dairy cows.  相似文献

Twenty double ejaculates from each of ten water-buffalo bulls were collected in June (non-breeding season) and again in November (breeding season). Fresh semen was screened for sperm quantity, motility, eosin uptake, and sperm morphology and was frozen using lactose, skim-milk, and Tris extenders. Thawed semen was checked for motility and Sephadex filtration. Half of each semen batch was used for artificial insemination in the breeding season and the other half during the non-breeding season.Laboratory screening revealed that June semen had a significantly lower Sephadex filtration rate and a higher percentage of abnormal sperm cells, and three June ejaculates were excluded from further processing due to poor sperm motility. In the remaining ejaculates the motility before freezing and the sperm cell quantity were higher in June semen than in November semen. Eosin uptake, mass motility, and post-freeze-motility did not vary with season. November semen produced significantly higher pregnancy rates than June semen over a total of 3220 inseminations in both seasons. Forty percent of the observed seasonality of buffalo fertility was attributable to the male. No fertility differences appeared between extenders used. When November semen was used, the fertility in adult buffaloes in both seasons was higher than in heifers.  相似文献

Declining reproductive performance is a serious breeding concern in many countries. To reveal the situation in Norwegian cattle, trends in reproductive performance were studied using insemination reports from 1985 to 2005 and data based on herd recording files from 1989 to 2005. The total number of first services was 469.765 in 1985 declining to 335.712 in 2005. The number of recorded herds and animals declined from 21.588 to 14.718 and 360.289 to 309.452 from 1989 to 2005, respectively. Sixty days non-return rate after single inseminations (NR60) increased from 68.1 in 1985 to 72.7% in 2005 (p < 0.001) and the number of services per inseminated animal (NIA) decreased from 1.8 to 1.6 (p < 0.001) from 1985 to 2005. However, return rates 0–3 days post insemination (RR0-3) increased from 6 to 12% in the same period (p < 0.001). NR60 was higher and the RR0-3 was lower in the summer season compared to the winter season during the whole period. A fertility index (FS), has been calculated from the herd recording files each year from 1989 to 2005. The average FS-index did not show a significant trend and the calving interval was also fairly constant between 12.4 and 12.6 months during this period. The average interval from calving to first and last insemination, respectively, increased from a low of 79 and 102 days in 1990 to a high of 86 and 108 days in 2005. Both intervals were consistently longer for cows in first lactation than for cows in later lactations. The percentage of inseminated animals reported culled because of poor fertility decreased from 6.0% in 1989 to 4.6% in 1996 and thereafter again increased to 6% in 2005. In conclusion, most fertility measures, mainly comprising the Norwegian Red (NRF) breed, show a relatively high level of reproductive performance with a positive or a relatively constant trend during the last two decades.  相似文献

Extended semen doses from some boars used for AI have been shown to develop high levels of sperm DNA fragmentation during storage. Studies in other animals and humans have shown that if DNA damage is present in a certain percentage of the sperm cells the fertility potential of the semen sample is reduced. The objectives of the present study was to determine the relationship between sperm DNA fragmentation measured using the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) in extended stored semen and field fertility in the boar. Three ejaculates from each of 145 boars were collected. Preparation of the semen doses included dilution with an EDTA extender and storage for up to 72 h post collection. The semen doses were assessed using flow cytometric methods for the percentage of viable sperm (PI/SYBR-14) and sperm DNA fragmentation (SCSA) at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h. A total of 3276 experimental inseminations in Danish breeding herds were conducted. The results showed that for 11 (7.6%) of the boars at least one of the three samples showed a value of DNA fragmentation index (DFI) above 20% within the storage period. Total number of piglets born (litter size) for Hampshire, Landrace and Danish Large White boars was, respectively, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 piglets smaller per litter when DFI values were above 2.1% as opposed to below this value. In conclusion the SCSA technique appears to be able to identify individuals with lower fertility with respect to litter size, and could in the future be implemented by the pig industry after a cost-benefit analysis.  相似文献

Environmental effects on fertility measures early in lactation, such as the interval from calving to first luteal activity (CLA), proportion of samples with luteal activity during the first 60 days after calving (PLA) and interval to first ovulatory oestrus (OOE) were studied. In addition, traditional measurements of fertility, such as pregnancy to first insemination, number of inseminations per service period and interval from first to last insemination were studied as well as associations between the early and late measurements. Data were collected from an experimental herd during 15 years and included 1106 post-partum periods from 191 Swedish Holsteins and 325 Swedish Red and White dairy cows. Individual milk progesterone samples were taken twice a week until cyclicity and thereafter less frequently. First parity cows had 14.8 and 18.1 days longer CLA (LS-means difference) than second parity cows and older cows, respectively. Moreover, CLA was 10.5 days longer for cows that calved during the winter season compared with the summer season and 7.5 days longer for cows in tie-stalls than cows in loose-housing system. Cows treated for mastitis and lameness had 8.4 and 18.0 days longer CLA, respectively, compared with healthy cows. OOE was affected in the same way as CLA by the different environmental factors. PLA was a good indicator of CLA, and there was a high correlation (-0.69) between these two measurements. Treatment for lameness had a significant influence on all late fertility measurements, whereas housing was significant only for pregnancy to first insemination. All fertility traits were unfavourably associated with increased milk production. Regression of late fertility measurements on early fertility measurements had only a minor association with conception at first AI and interval from first to last AI for cows with conventional calving intervals, i.e. a 22 days later, CLA increased the interval from first to last insemination by 3.4 days. Early measurements had repeatabilities of 0.14-0.16, indicating a higher influence by the cow itself compared with late measurements, which had repeatabilities of 0.09-0.10. Our study shows that early fertility measurements have a possibility to be used in breeding for better fertility. To improve the early fertility of the cow, there are a number of important factors that have to be taken into account.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of summer and winter seasons on semen quality and plasma hormone concentrations in cross-bred bulls. Semen was collected by an artificial vagina from eight bulls and microscopically evaluated for quality parameters. Semen volume was higher in summer season (p < 0.05) than winter season, whereas nonsignificant variation (p > 0.05) was observed in mass motility, individual motility, sperm viability, sperm concentration and percentage of membrane-intact and acrosome-intact spermatozoa. Plasma prolactin and testosterone concentration were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in summer season than winter season. Plasma testosterone levels were positively correlated with semen volume and negatively correlated with individual motility (p < 0.05). Prolactin showed a significant positive correlation with semen volume. A well-defined seasonal pattern in semen characteristics was not observed and few correlations existed between plasma hormone levels and semen characteristics in Karan Fries bulls.  相似文献

The objective of this retrospective field study was to determine the effects of storing, for up to 62 h, heterospermic and homospermic semen in the short-term extender Beltsville thawing solution (BTS), on reproductive performance in Norwegian swine of four different breed combinations. The study was based on fertility records after single or double inseminations with semen collected at an AI station in Norway from January 1998 to June 2001. Increasing the duration of storage of homospermic semen, but not heterospermic semen, from an interval of 4-14 h to an interval of 52-62 h, was associated with a 0.5 piglet reduction in litter size. There were differences in reproductive performance among breed combinations that appeared to be associated with duration of semen storage. In conclusion, prolonged semen storage decreased reproductive performance; the extent varied among breeds and was prevented by the use of heterospermic versus homospermic semen.  相似文献

The effects of extender and storage at 20 degrees C on equine spermatozoa were evaluated in two experiments using embryo recovery as the end point. In both experiments, inseminations were every other day, starting on Day 2 or 3 of estrus or after a 35-mm follicle was detected, with 250 x 10(6) progressively motile cells (based on initial evaluation). In Experiment 1, semen from two stallions was used to compare the motility and fertility of spermatozoa maintained in a) heated skim milk extender at 37 degrees C with insemination in <1 h; b) E-Z Mixin extender at 37 degrees C with insemination in <1 h; and c) E-Z Mixin extender at 37 degrees C with cooling to 20 degrees C and insemination after storage for 12 h at 20 degrees C. The percentage of motile spermatozoa was 34% after 12 h compared to 55% at 0 h (P < 0.05). However, the percentage of mares from which an embryo was recovered 6.5 d after ovulation was 62, 56, and 50% for Treatments A, B, and C (P > 0.05). In Experiment 2, semen from three stallions was used to compare the motility and fertility of spermatozoa in a) E-Z Mixin extender at 37 degrees C with insemination in <1 h or b) E-Z Mixin extender at 37 degrees C with cooling to 20 degrees C and insemination after storage for 24 h at 20 degrees C. The percentage of motile spermatozoa was 17% after 24 h compared to 54% at 0 h (P < 0.05). There was no difference between treatments (P > 0.05) in the percentage of mares from which an embryo was recovered 6.0 d after ovulation (68 vs 62%) or among stallions. Thus, stallion semen extended in E-Z Mixin was held at 20 degrees C for 24 h without a marked decline in fertility.  相似文献

The onset of egg production (mean 18.3 days after the onset of photostimulation) and the rate of egg production (flock averaged 4.9 eggs per bird per week for the first 8 weeks of egg production) were not affected by 5 days of twice daily oviduct eversion ('venting') in the pre-laying period when compared to unvented controls. After the onset of photostimulation, pre-laying hens were inseminated twice daily on Days 12 to 16 with 3 microliter semen containing 15 x 10(6) spermatozoa, and compared with groups of hens inseminated once daily on Days 15 and 16 with 15 microliters semen containing 75 x 10(6) spermatozoa or 41 microliter semen containing 200 x 10(6) spermatozoa. Fertility remained high for the first 5 weeks of egg production. However, by Week 6 the fertility of the hens receiving frequent low doses of semen dropped significantly below that of the others, which suggests that multiple inseminations with a low semen volume containing relatively low numbers of spermatozoa does not lead to an increase in the efficacy of sperm transport and storage in the oviduct.  相似文献

Field trials were designed to evaluate use of norgestomet treatment to induce ovulatory estrus in non-cycling buffalo cows and heifers during low breeding season. Twenty-five buffalo cows and 50 heifers under village management were given a 9-day treatment with a polymer implant containing 6 mg norgestomet with IM injections of 5 mg estradiol valerate + 3 mg norgestomet at the time of implantation and 600 IU PMSG when the implant was removed. Fifty animals served as controls without any treatment. Seventy-four treated animals showed estrus during the period between 36 to 80 hours after removal of the implant. Twenty-five buffalo cows and 40 heifers that could be further followed up were inseminated twice at 8-hour intervals, 12 hrs after induction of estrus with chilled semen by recto-vaginal method. Of these, 15 (23.1%) conceived, 9 (36%) among buffalo cows and 6 (15%) among heifers. Fourteen buffalo cows and 30 heifers that did not conceive manifested cyclic estrus at an interval of 22.4 and 20.6 days. The conception rate in the cyclic estrus was 57% and 23.3%, respectively, for buffalo cows and heifers. The overall conception rate over two inseminations was 46.2%, 68% in buffalo cows and 32.5% in heifers. In the control group, five (10%) showed spontaneous estrus and two (40%) conceived during the period of the experiment.  相似文献

A total of 4109 does of a local Greek breed (Capra prisca) were synchronized with intravaginal MPA-sponges and PMSG, and 24 bucks of Alpine (n = 8), Saanen (n = 8) and Damascus (n = 8) breeds were used for studying the fertility of nonfrozen and frozen-thawed semen during the nonbreeding season (June to August). Artificial insemination (AI) was performed once (50 to 55 h after sponge withdrawal) or twice (36 and 60 h after sponge withdrawals with fresh semen (collected during the nonbreeding season, stored at 16 degrees C and inseminated within 6 h) or frozen semen (prepared from the same bucks during the preceding breeding season). The induction of estrus was successful, varying between 91.0 and 95.0%. The form of semen (fresh or frozen-thawed used for inseminating the synchronized does affected their fertility: the overall kidding rate with fresh semen (65.5%) was higher (P < 0.05) than that with frozen-thawed semen (53.4%). The fertility level was also affected by the number of inseminations performed: the overall kidding rate was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the does inseminated twice with fresh or frozen-thawed semen (70.4 and 59. 1%, respectively) than in those inseminated only once (48.9 and 44.9%, respectively). Finally, the breed of the buck used for preparing the fresh or the frozen-thawed semen affected the fertility level of the does. The kidding rate was higher in does inseminated with fresh semen prepared from bucks of the Damascus breed than from bucks of Saanen or Alpine breed. However, when frozen-thawed semen was used the kidding rate was lower in does inseminated with semen prepared from bucks of the Damascus breed than from bucks of the Alpine or Saanen breed. It is concluded that the fresh semen of Alpine, Saanen and Damascus breed bucks, born and raised under the climate conditions prevailing in Greece (34 degrees to 41 degrees N), can be used successfully during the nonbreeding season (June to August) for inseminating does.  相似文献

This work represents efforts towards development of the zona-free hamster ovum sperm penetration assay for predicting relative levels of fertility for semen from individual bulls. Results reported here followed insemination of hamster vitelli with bull sperm, after frozen storage, with observations of sperm acrosomes and parallel inseminations of more than 1000 cows with semen from each bull. The average 75-day non-return rate for the four bulls was 74.0% (range 71.6 to 75.6). Laboratory studies indicated the following: the percentage of sperm with intact acrosomes varied from 55 to 73 between bulls, the percentage of motile sperm varied from 41 to 64, the percentage of sperm with progressive motility ranged from 24 to 40, the number of sperm interacting per (zona-free hamster) ovum ranged from 1.6 to 3.8, the number of sperm attached per ovum ranged from 1.4 to 2.9, the number of sperm within each penetrated ovum ranged from 1.5 to 1.8, the percentage of ova interacting with sperm ranged from 76 to 92, the percentage of ova penetrated ranged from 62 to 85, and the percentage of ova with male pronuclei ranged from 33 to 49. Although predictive ranking in the laboratory of these bulls with less than 4% variation in fertility levels was not possible, the zone-free hamster ovum test could be useful in identifying potentially subfertile bulls before they enter a young sire-sampling program.  相似文献

We studied the influence of two different extenders, a milk-based versus a TRIS-based extender, using a split-sample technique, on fertility after single and double vaginal inseminations in natural estrous in Norwegian Crossbred ewes. Semen from 21 Norwegian Crossbred rams, all aged approximately 0.5 years, was used for AI of totally 561 Norwegian Crossbred ewes housed at 37 different farms. The farmers performed the inseminations themselves. The ewes were allocated to four parallel groups based on the two extenders and single or double inseminations (2 x 2). The farmers were recommended to inseminate the ewes between 12 and 24 h after detection of natural standing estrous. Vaginal insemination with cooled liquid semen diluted in the milk-based extender resulted in a statistically significant (P<0.01) better fertility of about 10% units both as 25-day NR (non return rate)-and lambing rates, compared with semen diluted in the TRIS-based extender. Double inseminations gave significantly higher (P=0.03) fertility results for both extenders expressed as 25-day NR results, but was not quite statistically significant when expressed as lambing rates (P=0.06) compared with single insemination. The overall 25-day NR results for the milk-based extender (66.4%) after single inseminations is in accordance with both the national results (67.1%) based on vaginal inseminations of 11,377 ewes, as well as with the results from a previous study in the same region achieving a 25-day NR results of 63.3%. In conclusion, liquid ram semen diluted in a milk-based extender and vaginally inseminated once in natural heat, with a semen dose of 150 x 10(6) spermatozoa, gave acceptable fertility results and is to be recommended as the method of choice in Norway.  相似文献

The fertility of lactating Holstein cows is severely reduced during periods of heat stress. Despite this reduction in fertility, however, some inseminations conducted during heat stress result in successful pregnancies from which heifer calves are born. Many of these heifer calves are retained and raised to enter the milking herd as replacement animals. Heat stress experienced by these females around the time they were conceived may confer long-lasting effects that alter subsequent milk production capacity. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between periconceptional heat stress and subsequent milk production of primiparous cows. National Dairy Herd Improvement Association data was obtained from Dairy Records Management Systems. Records included Holstein cows that had completed at least one lactation in one of three states with large populations of dairy cattle and which are known for having hot, humid summers: Georgia, Florida or Texas. Dates of conception were calculated by subtracting 276 d from the recorded birth date of each individual cow. Records for cows conceived within the months of June, July, and August were retained as heat stress-conceived (HSC) cows (n = 94,440); cows conceived within the months of December, January, and February were retained as thermoneutral-conceived (TNC) contemporaries (n = 141,365). In order to account for the effects of environmental conditions on total milk production for a given lactation, cows were blocked by season of calving (winter, spring, summer or fall). Adjusted 305-day mature-equivalent milk production was evaluated with a mixed model ANOVA using SAS, in which random effects were used to account for variability between herds. Of the cows that calved in the summer, fall and winter, TNC cows had higher milk yield than the HSC cows in all states. Interestingly, the cows that calved in the spring presented a unique relationship, with HSC cows producing more milk. Overall however, heat stress at the time of conception is associated with lower milk production during the first lactation. While this association does not prove cause and effect, it does provide justification for additional investigation into whether heat stress around the time of conception results in long-term, detrimental consequences for the conceptus.  相似文献

The artificial insemination (AI) industry is in need of an objective and rapid, but inexpensive method to evaluate frozen thawed bull semen ejaculates. This study presents a new fluorescence method that uses an automatized fluorometer and fluorophore stain propidium iodide that stains only those cells with damaged membranes. The fluorescence of the semen sample and the totally killed subsample were measured simultaneously, and viability was calculated. Every semen batch was analyzed before use in AI. For fertility evaluation, the nonreturn rates (NR%) obtained from 92,120 inseminations with the analyzed batches were recorded from 166 bulls (436 batches). This study confirms a 3.9% better NR% for the Finnish Holstein-Friesian breed than for Finnish Ayrshire. There was a clear seasonality in NR%: it differed (5.3%) significantly, being best in summer to autumn (June to October) and lowest in winter (January to March). The fluorometer method was fast and easy. The correlation between the total number of viable spermatozoa in an insemination dose and field fertility was low but significant (r = 0.051, P = 0.016), suggesting that the plasma membrane integrity evaluation can serve as a cost-beneficial quality control method of frozen-thawed semen at bull stations.  相似文献

An analysis of computerized data on the incidence and consequences of reproductive disorders was performed on 84,818 lactations in more than 100 high producing Kibbutz dairy herds during six semiannual recording periods. The average incidence of primary reproductive disorders, which included retained placenta, abnormal lochia, endometritis, postpartum anestrus, cystic ovaries, negative pregnancy examinations and repeat breeders, was 50.4%. During all recording periods we were able to observe recurrence and repeatability of these reproductive disorders and of the fertility indices consequently seen. Cows with uterine infections diagnosed and treated before Day 20 post partum had better fertility indices than those diagnosed and treated later. The conception rate to first inseminations and the overall conception rate to all inseminations of cows with postpartum anestrus was significantly lower, while the percentage of "problem cows" (not pregnant by Day 150 post partum) was significantly higher, than in normal cows. The incidence of cystic ovaries in cows with a previous diagnosis of reproductive disorders was 2 to 3 times higher when compared to cows without such a diagnosis.  相似文献

The objective of the present research was to eliminate seasonal fluctuations in year-round reproductive performance of sows and to improve litter parameters by administration of oxytocin into liquid semen insemination doses. A 2-year experiment was performed on crossbreed sows, Polish Large White × Polish Landrace, which were partitioned into two groups: control, insemination without any modification with 100 mL semen doses and oxytocin, insemination with 100 mL semen doses to which 5 IU of oxytocin was added just before insemination. A total of 10,486 inseminations were made. The farrowing rate and obtained litter parameters, including the effect of season, were analyzed. For each litter, the following factors were defined: average litter size, percentage of fetal death and mummified piglets, average piglet birth weight, percentage of piglet mortality, fecundity index, average number of piglets weaned, weaned piglet weight, and daily gain. Sows presented a positive reaction to the experimental factor. A statistically higher farrowing rate for oxytocin group in summer and autumn seasons was confirmed (P ≤ 0.01). Regardless of the season, a higher average litter size was observed in the oxytocin group with the most evident differences for winter, spring (P ≤ 0.01), and summer (P ≤ 0.05). The effect of oxytocin on the percentage of fetal death and mummified piglets born was not confirmed statistically except for winter. Analyzing the fecundity index, higher values were obtained for the oxytocin group in all seasons (P ≤ 0.01), including the lowest difference between groups for winter (51.43) and the highest for summer (100.61). A higher average birth piglet weight and weaned piglet weight were recorded for the oxytocin group in all seasons. The highest differences in birth piglet weight between groups were noted for spring (0.22 kg; P ≤ 0.01) and winter (0.17 kg; P ≤ 0.05) and in weaned piglet weight for winter and spring (0.58 kg and 0.52 kg; for both, P ≤ 0.01). The greatest daily gains were observed in the winter season (P ≤ 0.05) in favor of oxytocin. On the basis of the presented results, it should be noted that the use of oxytocin into insemination doses improves the farrowing rate and other parameters of the reproductive performance of sows. In the absence of negative effects, year-round insemination with oxytocin addition into seminal doses is recommended, which effectively improves the production performance and reduces the problem of seasonality in reproduction.  相似文献
