We studied interactions between three organisms associated with a common gastropod of northern Atlantic shores, the periwinkle Littorina littorea: barnacle epibionts Balanus crenatus, a shell boring polychaete Polydora ciliata, and tissue invading trematodes which use the periwinkles as first intermediate host. Snails collected shortly after barnacle settlement with > 50% cover of barnacles had significantly higher infestation of shell boring worms compared to unfouled snails, while trematode infestation was similar. The result was the same at two sites, and we conclude that the worm P. ciliata facilitates barnacle fouling on snails. The reverse was also the case. In an experiment with 14 weeks of exposure, snail treatments with barnacle epibionts had a significantly higher P. ciliata load than unfouled and cleaned snails. Again, trematode infestations were similar. The reciprocal positive interactions between barnacle epibionts and shell boring worms on snail houses is regarded as a case of facultative mutualism. On the other hand, for the snail basibiont, both barnacles and shell boring worms exert strongly negative effects by reducing fecundity, growth, and survival, resulting in a vicious circle for the snails. The combined effects of these associated organisms may rival in importance any competitive or predacious effects on the host L. littorea.  相似文献

On sedimentary tidal flats near the island of Sylt (German Bight, North Sea) abundance and size distribution of periwinkles, Littorina littorea L., were studied in low intertidal and in shallow and deep subtidal mussel beds (Mytilus edulis L.). In low intertidal mussel beds, surveys revealed that high densities (1,369±571 m–2) of juvenile snails (≤13 mm) were positively correlated with strong barnacle epigrowth (Semibalanus balanoides L. and Balanus crenatus Bruguière) on mussels. A subsequent field experiment showed that recruitment of L. littorea was restricted to the intertidal zone. Abundances of periwinkles (213±114 m–2) and barnacles abruptly decreased in the adjacent shallow subtidal zone, which served as a habitat for older snails (>13 mm). L. littorea was completely absent from disjunct deep (5 m) subtidal mussel beds. Snail abundance varied seasonally with maxima of >4,000 m–2 in low intertidal mussel beds in October and minima in July, just before the onset of new recruitment. I suggest that the presence of cracks and crevices among the dense barnacle overgrowth in intertidal mussel beds favoured recruitment and survival of juvenile snails. Larger (older) specimens are assumed to actively migrate to the less favourable adjacent subtidal. On sedimentary tidal flats in the Wadden Sea near the Island of Sylt, the periwinkleLittorina littorea occurred preferentially on clusters and beds of mussels and on shell beds (100 to 350 m−2), achieved moderate densities on green algal patches or mats (20 to 50 m−2), and remained rare on bare sediments (<5 m−2). Green algae covering>10% of sediment surface appeared in summer on approximately one third of the tidal zone, mainly in the upper and sheltered parts and almost never on mussel and shell beds. In feeding experiments,L. littorea ingested more of the dominant alge,Enteromorpha, than ofUlva, irrespective of whether or not algae were fresh or decaying. The tough thalli ofChaetomorpha were hardly consumed. Snails feeding onEnteromorpha produced fecal pellets from which new growth ofEnteromorpha started. In the absence of periwinkles,Enteromorpha developed on mussels and the attached fucoids. Experimentally increased snail densities on sediments prevented green algal development, but the snails were unable to graze down established algal mats. It is concluded that natural densities ofL. littorea hardly affect the ephemeral mass development of green algae on sediments. However, where the snails occur at high densities, i.e. on mussel beds, green algal development may be prevented.  相似文献

On the extensive sedimentary tidal flats of the Wadden Sea, beds of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis represent the only major hard substratum and attachment surface for sessile organisms. On this substratum, the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides is the most frequent epibiont. In summer 1998, it occurred on over 90% of the large mussels (>45 mm shell length) and the dry weight of barnacles reached 65% of mussel dry weight. However, the extent of barnacle overgrowth is not constant and differs widely between years. Periwinkles (Littorina littorea) may reach densities >2000 m–2 on intertidal mussel beds. Field experiments were conducted to test the effect of periwinkle grazing on barnacle densities. An experimental reduction of grazing and bulldozing pressure by periwinkles resulted in increased recruitment of barnacles, while barnacle numbers decreased with increasing snail density. The highest numbers of barnacles survived in the absence of L. littorea. However, a lack of periwinkle grazing activity also facilitated settlement of ephemeral algae which settled later in the year. Field experiments showed that the growth rate of barnacles decreased in the presence of these ephemeral algae. Thus, L. littorea may reduce initial barnacle settlement, but later may indirectly increase barnacle growth rate by reducing ephemeral algae. It is suggested that periwinkle density may be a key factor in the population dynamics of S. balanoides on intertidal mussel beds in the Wadden Sea.  相似文献

The littorinid snail, Cenchritis muricatus, inhabits supralittoral vertical rocky walls along Caribbean shores, at times surpassing 14 meters above mean sea level. As the sole macrofaunal representative of this habitat, this marine gastropod presumably experiences extraordinary conditions of thermal load and desiccation. In order to understand the effect of behavioral choices on periwinkle survivorship and growth, snail distribution, microhabitat utilization, and crawling speed were documented in St John (US Virgin Islands). In general, snails rarely inhabited open surfaces; instead, periwinkles were commonly observed in microhabitats that may reduce water and heat stresses (e.g., > 75% in crevices and depressions). Snails found on occasional buttonwood trees (Conocarpus erectus) were larger than elsewhere. Although typically found in repose, C. muricatus crawling speed on moist, shaded, and smooth substrata averaged more than 3 cm.min- 1, but did not vary with slope. Repeated mark-recapture of tagged periwinkles exhibited high recovery rates (ca. 35% after 4 yr), absence of mortality, and a projected cessation of growth at 16.5 mm (shell height). Nearly 10% of marked individuals were recaptured every year. Dead, tagged snails were never noted; indeed, seven individuals were only recovered once, a full 4 yrs after release. Site-specific growth rates were absent. Projections using von Bertalanffy growth functions (VBGF) suggest that periwinkles will require 15+ years to achieve the maximum shell height. These VBGF models cannot address extraordinary individuals reaching 22 mm. C. muricatus's remarkable supralittoral distribution may be explained by physiological tolerance, selection of microhabitats, lack of predators and long lifespan.  相似文献

We examined the potential of herbivory by the common periwinkle Littorina littorea to limit recruitment and vegetative re-growth of the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides in a series of manipulative field experiments in tidepools on a wave-exposed rocky shore in Nova Scotia, Canada. Snails were excluded or included from circular plots (14 to 20 cm diameter) with cages to compare growth and survival of C. fragile against procedural (partial cages) or natural (uncaged) control plots. Our results show that L. littorea may restrict growth and survival of C. fragile by grazing new recruits (< 2 cm thallus length), fronds of adult thalli that are bleached and necrotic, and residual holdfasts (< 2 mm thickness) of detached thalli (artificially severed to mimic wave dislodgement). Once recruits grow beyond a critical size (~ 3 cm), or damaged tissues or holdfasts regenerate, grazing of C. fragile by L. littorea appears to be limited and ineffectual. Our experimental results corroborate correlative evidence from previous studies that herbivory by L. littorea limits the abundance of C. fragile in tidepools on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, particularly pools in the high intertidal zone where these snails are abundant. Lower on the shore, littorinid grazing and physical stressors that render algae more vulnerable to grazers (e.g. UV radiation and freezing) are less intensive, and probably have less of a regulatory effect on populations of C. fragile.  相似文献

In many taxa, initial differences in offspring size play an important role in mediating subsequent performance; however, the consequences of interspecific variation in size for the performance of co‐occurring taxa have been rarely examined. We used the whelks Cominella virgata and C. maculosa, which co‐occur on rocky shores throughout their life cycles, to examine the vulnerability of early life‐stages to native predators under controlled laboratory conditions. Among all the predators evaluated (the cushion sea star Patiriella spp., the olive rockfish Acanthoclinus fuscus, the oyster borer snail Haustrum scobina, the smooth shore crab Cyclograpsus lavauxi, and the pebble crab Heterozius rotundifrons), hatchlings of both species (C. virgata: ~3 mm shell length [SL] and C. maculosa: ~1.5 mm SL) were especially vulnerable to the smooth shore crab Cy. lavauxi, the only potential predator in which mortality was greater than in the control treatment. Small shore crabs (~8 mm carapace width [CW]) were unable to eat hatchlings of either whelk species, whereas medium and large shore crabs (~12 and ~18 mm CW, respectively) consumed hatchlings of both prey species. Hatchlings of C. virgata were less vulnerable to predation by medium crabs than large ones, and those of C. maculosa were equally vulnerable to both sizes of crabs. In hatchlings of both prey species, shell length and shell thickness increased over time. Two months after hatching, only individuals of C. virgata had reached a size refuge from predation. Our results show that interspecific vulnerability to predators can be mitigated by larger sizes and thicker shells at hatching; nonetheless, our results also suggest that other species‐specific factors, such as juvenile growth rate, may also play key roles in determining the vulnerability of hatchling and juvenile snails to shell‐crushing predators.  相似文献

Population density and size distribution, salinity tolerance, and feeding activity were examined in a western Pacific grapsid crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, that was recently introduced to the mid-Atlantic coast of North America. Seasonal abundance on a boulder/cobble shore (Crane Neck Pt.) in central Long Island Sound, New York, USA, during 1997–1998, ranged from 7 to 10 crabs m−2 averaged over the entire intertidal zone. Crabs occurred throughout the intertidal during summer and fall, but appeared to move from high to low elevations during winter. In laboratory experiments, H. sanguineus tolerated salinity down to 10 ppt for 7 d, but showed significant preference for 20 or 27 ppt over 10 ppt. The crabs readily consumed juvenile snails (Littorina littorea) and mussels (Mytilus edulis), as well as other common species of macroalgae and invertebrates occurring at Crane Neck Pt. High feeding rates and the ability to consume littorine snails up to 13 mm in height and mussels up to 20 mm in length suggest that this nonindigenous species has the potential to significantly affect the structure of rocky intertidal communities in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean; however, rigorous field studies are needed to accurately determine the impact of this recent introduction. Despite an exponential rise in anthropogenically-mediated transfers of non-indigenous species during the last 150 years, several coastal anthropogenic activities remain unregulated under current legislation frameworks. This study investigates the potential role of commercial periwinkle (Littorina littorea) harvesting as an unregulated facilitator of both small- and large-scale geographic range expansion of an invasive oyster epibiont (Ostrea chilensis) within the Menai Strait (North Wales, UK) and beyond. The frequency of oyster-fouled periwinkles was greatest in areas of high adult oyster abundance and restricted to large, market-sized periwinkles (>20 mm) inhabiting the low shore. Active efforts by commercial collectors to reject oyster-fouled periwinkles were found to be inadequate, with oysters of all sizes observed within collected hauls. Whilst the survival of fouled and unfouled periwinkles was comparable under post-collection refrigerated conditions, a significant decrease in both mobility and flesh content was associated with the presence of oyster epibionts. Survival of all but the smallest oyster epibionts under post-collection refrigerated conditions enhances the possibility of accidental non-indigenous oyster transfers. Better interventions during both initial visual inspection and post-griddling stages are recommended, as well as the development of techniques that kill off all non-indigenous epibionts, whilst leaving the freshness and marketability of the periwinkles uncompromised.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was conducted with the marine gastropod Littorina littorea from three different sites in Long Island Sound to test for inducible responses to the non‐native predatory crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus. Individuals of L. littorea did not exhibit decreased shell growth in response to increased predation risk, which differs from the response seen in other species of Littorina. However, snails did exhibit slower growth in response to reduced food availability, as seen in other gastropods. Surprisingly, snails from two sites exhibited differences between the crab‐exposed and reduced food‐availability treatments in how they remodeled the thickness of different microstructural layers of shell material in apical parts of the shell. Although individuals of L. littorea did not show the typical shell thickening response seen in other gastropods, they did show differences among populations in remodeling their shell. This underlies the importance of examining how the shell is constructed and remodeled in studies of inducible defenses in gastropods, as well as the importance of examining animals from multiple populations.  相似文献

The suspension-feeding slippersnail Crepidula convexa is commonly associated with hermit crabs (Pagurus longicarpus) living in periwinkle shells (Littorina littorea) at our study site in Nahant, MA, USA. In 15 field surveys conducted at Nahant in 2000, 2001 and 2003, we found that (1) more than 61.8% of individuals of C. convexa resided on shells occupied by hermit crabs, as opposed to the shells of live periwinkles, empty periwinkle shells or other solid substrates; (2) an average of 8.3% of hermit crabs carried at least one individual of C. convexa; and (3) 39.1-75.0% of hermit crabs carrying C. convexa were carrying “large” individuals (snails with wet weight >10% of the weight of the periwinkle shells they occupied). However, it is unlikely that individuals of C. convexa seek out shells occupied by hermit crabs to colonize, and they showed no preference for empty periwinkle shells over other solid substrates in the laboratory. Moreover, in the laboratory the hermit crabs preferentially occupied intact shells bearing individuals of C. convexa only when the alternatives were shells that had been drilled by naticid snails. Thus, neither party preferentially associates with the other: rather, extensive predation by naticid snails on periwinkles at Nahant appears to limit the availability of suitable shells for the hermit crabs, forcing them to inhabit shells bearing “large” individuals of C. convexa. Individuals of C. convexa may benefit from this inadvertent association with hermit crabs: by facilitating snail dispersal, transport by hermit crabs should reduce the potential for inbreeding, an important consideration for a species that lacks free-living larvae in its life history.  相似文献

In a sandy bay with mussel beds in the Wadden Sea (Island of Sylt, eastern North Sea), periwinkles Littorina littorea (L.) were often strongly overgrown with the barnacle Balanus crenatus Bruguière in the lower intertidal zone. Consequences of this epibiosis on mobility, reproduction and mortalityof the snail were examined. B. crenatus growing on L. littorea increased snail volume up to 4-fold and weight up to 3.5-fold and crawling speed of fouled L. littorea was significantly slowed down. The epibiotic structure also caused a decrease in reproductive output. In laboratory experiments, egg production of fouled L. littorea was significantly lower than in snails free of barnacles. Presumably, copulation of the periwinkles is hampered by the voluminous and prickly cover of barnacles. Field studies demonstrated an increased mortality of overgrown L. littorea. A decrease in reproductive output and a lower survival of snails with a cover of barnacles suggest that B. crenatus epibionts may have a significant impact on the population of L. littorea. Species face multiple selective pressures that may require opposing responses to mitigate. On rocky shorelines, fitness of the intertidal snail Littorina littorea is determined by both parasitism and predation. We experimentally demonstrated that L. littorea was at greatest risk of infection from trematode parasites high in the intertidal zone where it was in closest proximity to abundant gull feces (the vector for the snail's parasites). However, because of extreme, size‐selective predation pressure at low tidal elevations, small snails often live high in the intertidal until they have grown sufficiently large. By prolonging their exposure to infection higher on the shore, ontogenetic responses to predation risk accentuate parasite risk. Counterintuitively, snails exhibited the highest trematode prevalence at the lowest tidal elevations where they had almost no risk of contracting infection. By carrying contracted infections into the lowest tidal zones, the larger, predation‐resistant snails invert hotspots of infection risk and prevalence, underscoring that size‐dependent selection pressures can decouple infection process and pattern even over small scales.  相似文献

Empirical estimates of selection gradients caused by predators are common, yet no one has quantified how these estimates vary with predator ontogeny. We used logistic regression to investigate how selection on gastropod shell thickness changed with predator size. Only small and medium purple shore crabs (Hemigrapsus nudus) exerted a linear selection gradient for increased shell‐thickness within a single population of the intertidal snail (Littorina subrotundata). The shape of the fitness function for shell thickness was confirmed to be linear for small and medium crabs but was humped for large male crabs, suggesting no directional selection. A second experiment using two prey species to amplify shell thickness differences established that the selection differential on adult snails decreased linearly as crab size increased. We observed differences in size distribution and sex ratios among three natural shore crab populations that may cause spatial and temporal variation in predator‐mediated selection on local snail populations.  相似文献

Aim: To elucidate the possible mechanism of phytoplasma elimination from periwinkle shoots caused by indole‐3‐butyric acid (IBA) treatment. Methods and Results: It has been shown that a transfer of in vitro‐grown phytoplasma‐infected Catharanthus roseus (periwinkle) plantlets from medium supplemented with 6‐benzylaminopurine (BA) to one supplemented with IBA can induce remission of symptoms and even permanent elimination of ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris’ reference strain HYDB. Endogenous auxin levels and general methylation levels in noninfected periwinkles, periwinkles infected with two ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’ species and phytoplasma‐recovered periwinkles were measured and compared. After the transfer from cytokinin‐ to auxin‐containing media, healthy shoots maintained their phenotype, methylation levels and hormone concentrations. Phytoplasma infection caused a change in the endogenous indole‐3‐acetic acid to IBA ratio in periwinkle shoots infected with two ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’ species, but general methylation was significantly changed only in shoots infected with ‘Ca. P. asteris’, which resulted in the only phytoplasma species eliminated from shoots after transfer to IBA‐containing medium. Both phytoplasma infection and treatment with plant growth regulators influenced callose deposition in phloem tissue, concentrations of photosynthetic pigments and soluble proteins, H2O2 levels and activities of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Conclusion: Lower level of host genome methylation in ‘Ca. P. asteris’‐infected periwinkles on medium supplemented with BA was significantly elevated after IBA treatment, while IBA treatment had no effect on cytosine methylation in periwinkles infected with ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma ulmi’ strain EY‐C. Significance and Impact of the Study: Hormone‐dependent recovery is a distinct phenomenon from natural recovery. As opposed to spontaneously recovered plants in which elevated peroxide levels and differential expression of peroxide‐related enzymes were observed, in hormone‐dependent recovery changes in global host genome, methylation coincide with the presence/absence of phytoplasma.  相似文献

Crab: snail size-structured interactions and salt marsh predation gradients   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
We studied size-structured predator-prey interactions between blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and marsh periwinkles (Littoraria irrorata) with a combination of field studies, laboratory experiments and individual-based modeling. Size distributions of Littoraria differed among years at the same sites in a salt marsh and could largely be explained by dominance of strong cohorts in the population. At a given site, abundance increased with elevation above tidal datum. Size-selective predation by blue crabs does not appear to be an important regulator of snail size distributions but may have a major effect on local abundance. Laboratory studies indicated that predator-prey interactions between Callinectes and Littoraria are strongly size-dependent. Crabs were generally effective at feeding on periwinkles at size ratios greater than approximately 6 (crab width: snail length). At lower size ratios crabs were far less effective at manipulating the snails, which often survived but with damaged shells. An individual-based model which incorporated information about incidence of snail shell scarring (resulting from non-lethal interactions) and snail density, predicted reduced predation rates and smaller average crab size with distance from the low tide refugium for crabs.  相似文献

Juvenile shore crabs Carcinus maenas (L.) were observed feeding on rock barnacles Semibalanus balanoides (L.) on a Bay of Fundy rocky shore. This previously unreported predatory behaviour was further investigated in the laboratory. When given a choice of three common and abundant gastropods, Nucella lapillus (L.), Littorina littorea (L.), and Littorina obtusata (L.), and the rock barnacle Semibalanus balanoides, juvenile shore crabs of both sexes ate mainly barnacles and consumed proportionately more barnacles than gastropods compared with adults, which ate mainly gastropods. The rock barnacle is an abundant and readily available food source which may be important in sustaining the juvenile crab through periods of moults and rapid growth. As the shore crab attains a certain age (size), it must forage lower on the shore as gastropods become more important in its diet.  相似文献

Population structure and spatial distribution with growth ofthe direct-developing gastropod, Batillaria cumingi, were investigatedon two shores of differing substrata. Sand-mud shore and rockyshore populations differed in size structure; first-year snailswere ca. 7 mm in shell length (SL) in both populations, whereassecond-year snails, merging with older cohorts, measured 15–25mm SL in the sand-mud shore population and ca. 15 mm SL in therocky shore population. Egg distribution matched adult distributionin the sand-mud shore population, but was more restricted thanthat of adults in the rocky shore population. The distributionof newly-hatched juveniles (0–1 mm SL) was restricted inboth populations, but the growth stage at which snails extendedtheir distribution differed between the two populations; 1–2.5mm SL on the sand-mud shore and 5 mm SL on the rocky shore. Floatingachieved by early juveniles (ca. 2 mm SL), was commonly observedin the sand-mud population, but rarely in the rocky shore population.The sudden expansion in distribution of the 1–2.5 mm SLgrowth stage in the sand-mud shore population is consideredto have been caused by floating, while expansion of the distributionof older growth stages (>5 mm SL) in the rocky shore populationprobably occurs by crawling. The Belgian coast has no natural rocky sites but a number of man-made constructions are colonized by rocky shore organisms. The rough periwinkle, Littorina saxatilis (Olivi), lacks a planktonic larval stage but is found on most breakwaters along the Belgian coast, a few built as recently as 1986. This indicates a good potential of dispersal along this sandy shallow coast, nearly as good as for the planktonic developer Littorina littorea (L.) which is found on generally the same sites in Belgium. The breakwater populations of L. saxatilis, however, tend to be somewhat less variable (level of heterozygosity about 10% less) than non-Belgian L. saxatilis populations of natural sites. This suggests that the breakwater populations have passed through bottlenecks when founded, but probably restored population sizes fairly rapidly afterwards. No relationship is found between geographic and genetic distances between populations of L. saxatilis.  相似文献

The periwinkle, Littorina sitkana, is found throughout the intertidal zone, often in isolated subpopulations. The majority of trematode parasites use snails as intermediate hosts, and decreased survivorship is often observed in snails infected with trematodes. Sampling L. sitkana from four sites in Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada, we test the effects of parasitic infection on snail survival using maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches using the software MARK and WinBUGS. We found that survival of periwinkles and trematode community composition differed among sites, but survival and trematode prevalence were uncorrelated. WinBUGS performed better than MARK in two ways: (1) by allowing the use of information on known mortality, thus preventing survival overestimation; and (2) by giving more stable estimates while testing the effect of body size on snail survival. Our results suggest that snail survival depends heavily on local environmental factors that may vary greatly within a small geographical region. These findings are important because the majority of experimental studies on survival are done on snails from a single location.  相似文献
