Non-random female mating preferences may contribute to the maintenance of phenotypic variation in color polymorphic species. However, the effect of female preference depends on the types of male traits used as signals by receptive females. If preference signals derive from discrete male traits (i.e., morph-specific), female preferences may rapidly fix to a morph. However, female preference signals may also include condition-dependent male traits. In this scenario, female preference may differ depending on the social context (i.e., male morph availability). Male tree lizards (Urosaurus ornatus) exhibit a dewlap color polymorphism that covaries with mating behavior. Blue morph males are aggressive and defend territories, yellow males are less aggressive and defend smaller territories, and orange males are typically nomadic. Female U. ornatus are also polymorphic in dewlap color, but the covariation between dewlap color and female behavior is unknown. We performed an experiment to determine how female mate choice depends on the visual and chemical signals produced by males. We also tested whether female morphs differ in their preferences for these signals. Female preferences involved both male dewlap color and size of the ventral color patch. However, the female morphs responded to these signals differently and depended on the choice between the types of male morphs. Our experiment revealed that females may be capable of distinguishing among the male morphs using chemical signals alone. Yellow females exhibit preferences based on both chemical and visual signals, which may be a strategy to avoid ultra-dominant males. In contrast, orange females may prefer dominant males. We conclude that female U. ornatus morphs differ in mating behavior. Our findings also provide evidence for a chemical polymorphism among male lizards in femoral pore secretions.  相似文献

A growing body of literature is recognizing that males may also play a role in the mating process by behaving non‐randomly toward potential female mates during courtship. In numerous species, discrete color polymorphisms in males are inferred to represent alternative mating tactics, which often correspond with concomitant asymmetries in ecology and behavior. In terms of their mating behavior, these ecological outcomes of a color polymorphism should affect a morph's likelihood and frequency of encountering females in a population, possibly favoring the evolution of morph‐specific mating preferences. Knowledge of how male morphs contribute to a species’ overall mating dynamics will improve our understanding of how sexual selection shapes phenotypic diversity in color polymorphic systems. We conducted a mate choice experiment to evaluate the extent and morph specificity of non‐random mating preferences by male ornate tree lizards, Urosaurus ornatus. We observed the behavior of blue and yellow males in an experimental arena in response to a choice between an orange or yellow female. We found that blue males preferred yellow females over orange females, and although yellow males visited females more often than blue males overall, their attention was not morph‐specific. Given male morph differences in choosiness, and their differences in social dominance, we conclude that female throat color may be partly under sexual selection in U. ornatus. However, a lack of concordance between male and female mating preferences (drawn from an earlier study) suggests that overall mating dynamics may serve to maintain, rather than enhance, color morph differences in this species.  相似文献

The initial purpose of the project described herein was to assess the preference of female Poecilia latipinna for an artificial novel male trait—an orange‐colored distal fringe added to the caudal fin of an otherwise wild‐type conspecific. Analysis of the preliminary data revealed consistent individual differences in the strength of female preference for either orange‐tailed or wild‐type males. This finding inspired the study's second aim—to evaluate whether the preference for orange‐tailed males observed among a subset of females could spread via mate choice copying to others in the population that initially preferred wild‐type males. Two experiments and a control were conducted wherein females were simultaneously presented with an orange‐tailed and a wild‐type dummy male using a standard dichotomous choice design. In the first experiment, female preference was assessed on two separate occasions in order to characterize the variability and consistency in preference for orange‐tailed versus wild‐type males. The second experiment addressed mate choice copying: Female preference was again assessed on two separate occasions, but involved pairing a model female with the non‐preferred male for a period of time between preference tests. A third set of control tests were conducted using the same protocol as the copying experiment except that subject females were unable to see the model paired with the non‐preferred male. Results showed that, although females collectively preferred neither the orange‐tailed nor the wild‐type dummy male in the first round of preference tests, the majority showed relatively strong individual preferences. The subset of females that preferred the orange‐tailed over the wild‐type male in the first round of testing all maintained their preferences in the second round whether or not they had observed a model in association with the non‐preferred wild‐type male between tests. However, females that preferred the wild type over the orange male in the first round of testing copied the model's choice of the non‐preferred orange‐tailed male in their second round of preference testing. These results highlight the importance of recognizing the likelihood that only a subset of females will express a preference as it first emerges within a population. In such instances, the preference may not be detected at the population level—a point frequently overlooked in studies of mate choice. Additionally, these data highlight the importance of assessing the preferences of individual females and their capacity to drive evolutionary change within populations. Lastly, this study offers evidence of a possible mechanism by which a novel male trait might spread via mate choice copying by exploiting an emerging sensory bias within a subset of females in the population.  相似文献

We examined interspecific female mating preferences in fourclosely related species of cichlid belonging to the Pseudotropheuszebra species complex of Lake Malawi. These species differin coloration but are similar in other respects, suggestingthat male color patterns may be important to female mate choicein species recognition. To test this hypothesis, we presented females from each species with a choice of four males, one ofher own species and three others that were each of a differentspecies. We also gave each female a choice between the threeheterospecific males only. In all four species, females showeda significant preference for conspecific males in the four-waychoice and chose the male with the most similar color patternto the conspecific male in the three-way choice. These resultsare discussed with reference to the theory of sexual selectionon color patterns as a means of sympatric speciation in cichlids.  相似文献

Recent experimental work on guppies (Poecilia reticulata) hasexamined the strength of genetic and cultural (copying) factorsin determining female mate choice. Using females from a populationwith a heritable preference for the amount of orange body colorpossessed by males, prior work discovered that a threshold differencein orange color among males existed below which females wouldchoose a less orange male if they observed another female choosethat male, but above which they consistently preferred the moreorange of the males, regardless of whether they viewed anotherfemale prefer the less orange male. I tested whether this thresholdcan be shifted by increasing the amount of mate-copying informationavailable to a female. I demonstrate that when a female hasthe opportunity to see two different model females independentlyprefer the less orange of two males or a single female neara drab male for a longer period of time (twice as long as inprior work), the observer female prefers this drab male evenwhen males dramatically differ in orange coloration.  相似文献

Female mating preference based on male nuptial coloration hasbeen suggested to be an important source of diversifying selectionin the radiation of Lake Victoria cichlid fish. Initial variationin female preference is a prerequisite for diversifying selection;however, it is rarely studied in natural populations. In clearwater areas of Lake Victoria, the sibling species Pundamiliapundamilia with blue males and Pundamilia nyererei with redmales coexist, intermediate phenotypes are rare, and most femaleshave species-assortative mating preferences. Here, we studya population of Pundamilia that inhabits turbid water wheremale coloration is variable from reddish to blue with most malesintermediate. We investigated male phenotype distribution andfemale mating preferences. Male phenotype was unimodally distributedwith a mode on intermediate color in 1 year and more blue-shiftedin 2 other years. In mate choice experiments with females ofthe turbid water population and males from a clearer water population,we found females with a significant and consistent preferencefor P. pundamilia (blue) males, females with such preferencesfor P. nyererei (red) males, and many females without a preference.Hence, female mating preferences in this population could causedisruptive selection on male coloration that is probably constrainedby the low signal transduction of the turbid water environment.We suggest that if environmental signal transduction was improvedand the preference/color polymorphism was stabilized by negativefrequency-dependent selection, divergent sexual selection mightseparate the 2 morphs into reproductively isolated species resemblingthe clear water species P. pundamilia and P. nyererei.  相似文献

Female mate choice by multiple male traits is an important current topic in animal behavior. However, the relative importance among the multiple cues in female choice is not explored in most cases. Female guppies Poecilia reticulata use both the color saturation of orange spots and the total length of males as mate choice criteria. In the present study, we used digitally modified video playbacks to examine the relative importance of these two male traits to female mate preferences. We initially examined the effective difference in the color saturation of orange spots as well as that in total length between two stimulus male images. Females only showed a strong preference for a bright male image (compared to the dull image) when the difference in color saturation was large (91% versus 25%). Conversely, females only exhibited a preference for larger size when they were presented a choice between two relatively small male images (total length 26.0 mm versus 23.0 mm). When two male images in which both the two traits were modified were presented to females, they prioritized male images possessing higher color saturation of orange spots, indicating the color saturation of male orange spots to be a more important factor than the total length in their mate choice. The color saturation of orange spots may convey more reliable information about the males to the females than their total lengths. These findings imply that females may rank multiple male criteria depending on relative benefits or costs derived from their mate choice based on each criterion.  相似文献

During intrasexual interactions, the visual properties of conspicuous male sexually selected traits may be important in social signalling. We used intruder models to examine the effect of pigmentation and ultraviolet (UV) reflectance of a single male trait on the responses of male blackbirds, Turdus merula. Stuffed models of male blackbirds with brown, yellow or orange bills were presented to residents in their natural habitat; we altered UV reflectance from the bills by applying nail varnish. This UV reflectance did not appear to affect the response of resident males during simulated territorial intrusions under natural signal and viewing conditions. However, models with brown bills received less attention from resident males than models displaying yellow or orange pigmentation. Brown bills are typical of first-year males and may be an effective signal of subordinate status, reducing aggression from adult males. Furthermore, resident males came closer, and initiated aggressive displays more quickly, in the presence of orange- versus yellow-billed models, suggesting that orange-billed models may be perceived as more of a threat to territory ownership. In 44% of presentations, females also responded to models (a response rate half that of males). Females spent more time more than 10 m from models when they lacked UV, suggesting that UV may be more important during intersexual interactions. However, bill pigmentation did not affect female responses to the models. Males and females may be attentive to different properties of bill appearance when establishing the territory. Mating success tends to be skewed toward dominant males, thoughfemale mate preferences may not always correlate with male dominance.In this study, we investigated the mating preferences of femalezebrafish, Danio rerio, in the absence of male–male competition.We paired females sequentially with males of known dominancerank, using a nested, repeated measures design, with egg productionas a measure of female mate preference. We predicted that femaleswould spawn more frequently and produce larger clutches whenpaired with males of higher dominance rank. We found significantdifferences among females in the size of clutches produced andamong males in the size of clutches received, but these differenceswere independent of male dominance rank. Male body size wasnot related to either dominance rank or clutch size received.These results indicate that females vary clutch size in relationto the males with which they are paired but that they do notfavor dominant males. Animals may obtain information guiding their choice betweenpotential partners from observing competitive interactionsand displays between them, or from displays directed at thechoosing individual. In the sex-role reversed pipefish Syngnathustyphle females display a temporary ornament (a color pattern)to other females as well as to males. We have previously shown that display of female ornaments per se is attractive to males.Here we show that information from competitive displays canoverride such direct attraction displays as signals in thepartner choice process. In a mate choice experiment, an enclosedmale could choose between two females. On the first experimentalday, females could interact freely, while on the second daythey were isolated from each other. When female-female competitionwas allowed, the ornament display was directed more to theother female than to the male: Time competing, rather thantime courting the male, correlated with ornament display duration.However, ornament display under competition and ornament displayin the absence of competition did not correlate significantly.In fact, females competing more intensively on day one displayedthe ornament less on day two. Furthermore, the ornament displayduring the first, but not the second, day predicted male matechoice on the second day. Thus, males remembered previous informationfrom competitive displays and used it rather than immediateinformation from displays in the absence of female-female competition.We suggest that competitive displays more reliably signal female quality as compared to noncompetitive ones, and that males benefitfrom mating with dominant females.  相似文献

Male American goldfinches (Carduelis tristis) exhibit conspicuous yellow plumage, orange bills, and black caps during the breeding season. These secondary sexual characteristics may serve as criteria by which females evaluate males as potential mates because the traits vary among individuals and are likely to be costly. We quantified plumage and bill color and cap characteristics of wild, free‐ranging American goldfinches during the breeding season and tested for relationships between those features, body condition and individual genetic diversity in males. Overall, male and female goldfinches were highly sexually dichromatic, with plumage saturation and brightness and bill brightness contributing strongly to the dimorphism. Body condition decreased significantly with Julian date, even over the 2‐wk period immediately prior to the onset of nesting during which we collected our color and cap measurements. Principal components describing color of the back and the bill significantly predicted date‐corrected body condition based on quadratic regressions, suggesting that there is reliable information in back and bill color that females could use when choosing mates. In a subset of captive males, we found that bill hue faded from orange to yellow within 24 h of capture, suggesting that bill color may reflect short‐term changes in health status or carotenoid availability. Individual genetic diversity based on a panel of eight microsatellite loci was correlated with back brightness and perhaps with cap symmetry. Based on the results of this field study, ornamentation of male American goldfinches appears to signal both long‐ and short‐term aspects of phenotypic quality.  相似文献

Although the evolution of genetic color polymorphisms has receivedmuch theoretical interest, few empirical studies have investigatedthe adaptive function of alternative color morphs. Furthermore,most studies have focused almost exclusively on the evolutionand adaptive expression of male coloration, leaving the roleof conspicuous female coloration largely unknown. Using thecolor polymorphic Gouldian finch (Erythrura gouldiae), thisstudy experimentally tests the status signaling function ofhead color (red, yellow, and black) among the 3 female colormorphs. In standardized dominance contests between unfamiliarfemales of different head colors, red-headed females dominatedboth black- and yellow-headed females. During contests betweenthe morphs, red-headed females passively displaced black- andyellow-headed opponents, whereas interactions between red-headeddyads were particularly aggressive and more frequent than interactionswithin dyads of the other color morphs. This effect of red dominancefurther persisted when head color was experimentally altered;red-manipulated females (of the other morphs) dominated bothblack- and yellow-headed females, whereas blackened red-headedfemales were dominated by naturally red-headed birds. Togetherwith similar dominance-related differences among male morphs,these results suggest that the 3 color morphs may display alternativestrategies in dominance behavior.  相似文献

Although females in numerous species generally prefer males with larger, brighter and more elaborate sexual traits, there is nonetheless considerable intra‐ and interpopulation variation in mating preferences amongst females that requires explanation. Such variation exists in the Trinidadian guppy, Poecilia reticulata, an important model organism for the study of sexual selection and mate choice. While female guppies tend to prefer more ornamented males as mates, particularly those with greater amounts of orange coloration, there remains variation both in male traits and female mating preferences within and between populations. Male body size is another trait that is sexually selected through female mate choice in some species, but has not been examined as extensively as body coloration in the guppy despite known intra‐ and interpopulation variation in this trait among adult males and its importance for survivorship in this species. In this study, we used a dichotomous‐choice test to quantify the mating preferences of female guppies, originating from a low‐predation population in Trinidad, for two male traits, body length and area of the body covered with orange and black pigmentation, independently of each other. We expected strong female mating preferences for both male body length and coloration in this population, given relaxation from predation and presumably relatively low cost of choice. Females indeed exhibited a strong preference for larger males as expected, but surprisingly a weaker (but nonetheless significant) preference for orange and black coloration. Interestingly, larger females demonstrated stronger preferences for larger males than did smaller females, which could potentially lead to size‐assortative mating in nature.  相似文献

Relationships between bright secondary sexual coloration and behavior were studied in female Holbrookia propinqua, which develop striking orange and yellow colors during the breeding season. In tethered introduction studies, brightly colored females performed aggressive courtship rejection behaviors toward conspecific males; plainly colored females were not aggressive toward males, but attempted to avoid them. Responses of females of the two color patterns toward conspecific females of both color phases were not detectably different. Experimental introductions of lizards with coloration modified by paint showed that females of both color patterns recognize any other lizard bearing the bright female colors as female, regardless of actual sex. Both the orange and yellow components were shown to contribute to sex recognition. The yellow component alone allowed accurate sex identification, but only half the females responded to males painted with only the orange female component as if they were females. Because females did not behave differently toward other females on the basis of coloration, the hypothesis that bright coloration evolved as an adaptive signal between females is rejected. The dark ventrolateral stripes of male and plainly colored females did not appear to affect intraspecific social responses by females.  相似文献

Digitally modified video techniques may provide some advantages for the behavioral study of animals, including fishes. However, the validity of the experiments that are conducted using digitally modified videos should be verified. In the present study, we examined female mate preference in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata in a Japanese population by exploring an appropriate method involving the use of digitally modified video playbacks. For the male stimulus, two video images were produced by digital modification of a video recording of a male; the brightness of the orange spot coloration of the male was enhanced (bright male) in one video and decreased (dull male) in the other video. In experiment 1, female choice was examined according to the method described in previous studies, i.e., two monitors were set on opposite sides of the test aquarium to simultaneously present two stimulus male images to the females. However, in this experiment, the stimulus male images did not attract the females to a greater extent than the blank aquarium images. In addition, although the first trial showed a female preference for bright males, in the second trial, in which each stimulus male image was shown from the monitor opposite to that used in the first trial, a significant preference for bright males could not be detected. In experiment 2, a monitor was placed on one side of the aquarium and the left and right sides of the monitor showed the two stimulus male images simultaneously. In addition, a 24-h time interval was set between the first and second trials. Females spent more time in the proximity of the male images than that of the blank images, and a female preference for bright males was observed in both trials. The results of this study clearly indicate the female preference for males possessing bright coloration of orange spots. These results also suggest that the one-sided monitor system adopted in experiment 2 is a more appropriate method than the two-sided monitor system to examine female mate preferences by using digitally modified video playbacks.  相似文献

Some secondary sexual traits (SSTs) such as structural characteristicsare semi-permanent or static, while others, such as courtshipdisplay, are more labile or dynamic. In this paper we reportresults from two experiments designed to test the relative attractivenessto female dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis, Passeriformes, Aves)of a relatively static plumage trait, the amount of white inthe tail, and a relatively dynamic behavioral trait, courtshipintensity. The experiments derived from a study showing that femalejuncos prefer males that court more vigorously. We asked whether femalesalso base their preferences on plumage traits and how they respond whenpresented with a choice between attractive traits that are eitherstatic (plumage) or dynamic (courtship) in nature. In the firstexperiment we presented males to females in paired mate-choicetrials and found that males enhanced with more white in theirtails were more attractive to females than controls with unenhancedtails. Females spent more time with enhanced males and directedmore sexual displays toward them. In the second experiment we testedwhether females preferred males with enhanced tails (a staticSST) or males with enhanced hormone-mediated courtship behavior(a dynamic SST). In this experiment females did not demonstratea consensus preference for either the static or the dynamictrait. Instead, some females preferred the male whose courtshipperformance was enhanced with testosterone, while others preferredthe male with an enhanced tail. We conclude that both kindsof traits are important in junco mate choice, but that somefemales apparently weigh static traits more heavily than dynamicones, while other females use opposite weightings.  相似文献

It is known that females prefer males with larger and/or brighter orange spots in many populations of the guppy Poecilia reticulata. However, female preference for male orange spots varies among populations and changes within several years when they are introduced into new habitats with different environment. Guppies were introduced into Okinawa, Japan, more than 20 years ago and were subjected to natural and sexual selection for a long period. The female preference for orange spot patterns of males was examined by the dichotomous choice experiment for a feral guppy population of the Hiji River, Okinawa. We chose full-sibling males as a pair of stimulus males that were simultaneously presented to a test female, because sibling males should resemble each other. To create different orange spot patterns between stimulus males, one male of the stimulus male pair was fed carotenoid-supplement food such as algae and another male was fed low-carotenoid food. High-carotenoid-treatment males showed not only brighter coloration of orange spots but also larger spots than other males as a result of this dietary-manipulation. In the dichotomous choice experiment, females preferred the high-carotenoid-treatment males. In addition, logistic regression analysis clarified that brighter coloration of male orange spots was the most important factor for female mate preference. This finding suggests indirect benefits of female preference for male orange spot patterns if the male foraging ability for algae were heritable.  相似文献

Color polymorphic sexual signals are often associated with alternative reproductive behaviors within populations, and the number, frequency, or type of morphs present often vary among populations. When these differences lead to assortative mating by population, the study of such polymorphic taxa may shed light on speciation mechanisms. We studied two populations of a lizard with polymorphic throat color, an important sexual signal. Males in one population exhibit orange, yellow, or blue throats; whereas males in the other exhibit orange, yellow, or white throats. We assessed female behavior when choosing between allopatric and sympatric males. We asked whether females discriminated more when the allopatric male was of an unfamiliar morph than when the allopatric male was similar in coloration to the sympatric male. We found that female rejection of allopatric males relative to sympatric males was more pronounced when males in a pair were more different in throat color. Our findings may help illuminate how behavioral responses to color morph differences between populations with polymorphic sexual signals contribute to reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Female mating preferences are often based on more than one cue.In empirical studies, however, different mate choice cues aretypically treated separately ignoring their possible interactions.In the current work, we studied how male body size and sizeof the male's nest jointly affect mate preferences of femalesand gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus. The females were givena binary choice between males that differed either in body sizeor size of their nest or both. We found that neither body sizenor size of the nest alone affected male attractiveness, buttogether these 2 cues had a significant effect. Specifically,large males were more popular among females when they had alarge nest than when they occupied a small nest. The resultssuggest that if interaction effects between multiple mate choicecues are not considered, there is a danger of ignoring or underestimatingthe importance of these cues in sexual selection by female choice.  相似文献

Recent theoretical and empirical studies confirm that male matechoice and/or female–female mate competition can be expressedin the absence of sex-role reversal. Such reproductive patternsmay select for the evolution of female traits that indicatefemale phenotypic or genotypic quality among non–role-reversedspecies. Although attention to the evolution and function offemale ornaments is increasing, additional focus is needed onfemale-specific ornaments (those not expressed in conspecificmales) and on nonavian systems in order to gain a broad understandingof how selection acts directly on ornamentation of female animals.In the striped plateau lizard, Sceloporus virgatus, only femalesdevelop orange throat patches during the reproductive season.The color peaks in expression near the time of ovulation andappears to stimulate male courtship. Here, I examine whetherthis female-specific ornament can be used by males to reliablyassess female phenotypic quality. Using multivariate regressionanalyses, I show that the area of the orange color patch predictsbody condition and mite load, the chroma (i.e., saturation)of the color patch predicts body size, and both patch area andchroma reliably predict average egg mass. Thus, female reproductivecolor may function as a condition-dependent signal, indicatingphenotypic quality to potential mates.  相似文献
