Nutrients in piggery wastewater with high organic matter, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content were biologically removed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with anaerobic, aerobic and anoxic stages. The SBR was operated with 3 cycles/day, temperature 30 degrees C, sludge retention time (SRT) 1 day and hydraulic retention time (HRT) 11 days. With a wastewater containing 1500 mg/l ammonium and 144 mg/l phosphate, a removal efficiency of 99.7% for nitrogen and 97.3% for phosphate was obtained. Experiments set up to evaluate the effect of temperature on the process showed that it should be run at temperatures higher than 16 degrees C to obtain good removals (> 95%). Batch tests (ammonia utilization rate, nitrogen utilization rate and oxygen utilization rate) proved to be good tools to evaluate heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass activity. The SBR proved to be a very flexible tool, and was particularly suitable for the treatment of piggery wastewater, characterized by high nutrient content and by frequent changes in composition and therefore affecting process conditions.  相似文献

The supernatant from mesophilic anaerobic digestion of piggery wastewater is characterised by a high amount of COD (4.1 g COD L(-1)), ammonium (2.3g NH(4)(+)-NL(-1)) and suspended solids (2.5 g SS L(-1)). This effluent can be efficiently treated by means of a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) strategy for biological COD, SS and nitrogen removal including a Coagulation/Flocculation step. Total COD and SS reduction yields higher than 66% and 74%, respectively, and a total nitrogen removal (via nitrite) of more than 98% were reached when working with HRT 2.7 days, SRT 12 days, temperature 32 degrees C, three aerobic/anoxic periods, without external control of pH and under limited aeration flow. The inhibition of nitrite oxidizing biomass was achieved by the working free ammonia concentration and the restricted air supply (dissolved oxygen concentration below 1 mg O(2)L(-1)). Since a part of the total COD was colloidal and/or refractory, a Coagulation/Flocculation step was implemented inside the SBR operating strategy to meet a suitable effluent quality to be discharged. Several Jar-Tests demonstrated that the optimal concentration of FeCl(3) was 800 mg L(-1). A respirometric assay showed that this coagulant dosage did not affect the biological activity of nitrifying/denitrifying biomass.  相似文献

Sequential anaerobic-aerobic digestion was applied to waste activated sludge (WAS) of a full scale wastewater treatment plant. The study was performed with the objective of testing the sequential digestion process on WAS, which is characterized by worse digestibility in comparison with the mixed sludge. Process performance was evaluated in terms of biogas production, volatile solids (VS) and COD reduction, and patterns of biopolymers (proteins and polysaccharides) in the subsequent digestion stages. VS removal efficiency of 40%, in the anaerobic phase, and an additional removal of 26%, in the aerobic one, were observed. For total COD removal efficiencies of 35% and 25% for anaerobic and aerobic stage respectively, were obtained. Kinetics of VS degradation process was analyzed by assuming a first order equation with respect to VS concentration. Evaluated kinetic parameters were 0.44 ± 0.20 d(-1) and 0.25 ± 0.15 d(-1) for the anaerobic stage and aerobic stage, respectively. With regard to biopolymers, in the anaerobic phase the content of proteins and polysaccharides increased to 50% and 69%, respectively, whereas in the subsequent aerobic phase, a decrease of 71% for proteins and 67% for polysaccharides was observed. The average specific biogas production 0.74 m(3)/(kg VS destroyed), was in the range of values reported in the specialized literature for conventional anaerobic mesophilic WAS digestion.  相似文献

Attached activated sludge from the Krasnaya Polyana (Sochi) wastewater treatment plant was studied after the reconstruction by increased aeration and water recycle, as well as by the installation of a bristle carrier for activated sludge immobilization. The activated sludge biofilms developing under conditions of intense aeration were shown to contain both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Activity of a strictly anaerobic methanogenic community was revealed, which degraded organic compounds to methane, further oxidized by aerobic methanotrophs. Volatile fatty acids, the intermediates of anaerobic degradation of complex organic compounds, were used by both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Anaerobic oxidation of ammonium with nitrite (anammox) and the presence of obligate anammox bacteria were revealed in attached activated sludge biofilms. Simultaneous aerobic and anaerobic degradation of organic contaminants by attached activated sludge provides for high rates of water treatment, stability of the activated sludge under variable environmental conditions, and decreased excess sludge formation.  相似文献

Different start-up procedures of an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) digester were carried out. Start-up without inoculum (experiment A) was delayed for about 120 day. The digester reached 75-85% total suspended solids (TSS) removal, 54-58% total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal and 63-73% biological oxygen demand (BOD5) removal at influent concentrations of 240-340 mg TCODil-1, temperatures of 13.5-15 degrees C and hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 10-11 h. Digested sludge was used as inoculum in experiment B. After the start-up period of 75 days, digester efficiencies were 58%, 41% and 54% for TSS, TCOD and BOD5 removal, respectively, working at 169 mg TCODil-1, temperature of 14 degrees C and HRT of 11 h. The sludge bed developed and stabilised quickly when using a hydraulically adapted inoculum (experiment C), but TCOD and BOD5 removals remained low and volatile fatty acids (VFA) accumulated in the effluent.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (AAA) activated sludge wastewater treatment system was employed to investigate the effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge retention time (SRT) on the removal and fate of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). In the range from 5 to 14h, HRT had no significant effect on DEHP removal. However, longer HRT increased DEHP accumulation in the system and DEHP retention in the waste sludge. When SRT was increased from 15 to 25d, DEHP removal efficiency stayed above 96%. Compared to the removal of only 88% at SRT of 10d, longer SRT enhanced DEHP degradation efficiency. The optimal HRT and SRT for both nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and DEHP removal were 8h and 15d. At these retention times, about 71% of DEHP was degraded by the activated sludge process, 26% was accumulated in the system, 2% was released in the effluent, and 1% remained in the waste sludge. The anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic reactors were responsible for 15%, 19% and 62% of the overall DEHP removal, respectively.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of waste activated sludge (WAS) has been regarded as the rate limiting step of anaerobic sludge digestion. Therefore, in this study, the effect of ultrasound and hydraulic residence time during sludge hydrolysis was investigated with the goal of enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD). WAS was ultrasonically disintegrated for hydrolysis, and it was semi-continuously fed to an anaerobic digesters at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The results of these experiments showed that the solids and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies when using ultrasonically disintegrated sludge were higher during AD than the control sludge. The longer the HRT, the higher the removal efficiencies of solids and COD, while methane production increased with lower HRT. Sludge with 30% hydrolysis produced 7 × more methane production than the control sludge. The highest methane yields were 0.350 m(3)/kg volatile solids (VS)(add) and 0.301 m(3)/kg COD(con) for 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge, respectively. In addition, we found that excess ultrasound irradiation may inhibit AD since the 50% hydrolyzed sludge produced lower methane yields than 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge.  相似文献

The effect of ultrasound and gamma-irradiation used as pre-treatments for the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures was examined. Untreated activated sludge was also subjected to anaerobic digestion at these temperatures as a control. The sonication time was 90 s using a Soniprep 150 (MSE Scientific Instruments) which operated at 23 kHz and had been adjusted to give an output of 47 W and the gamma-irradiation dose was 500 krad. The digesters were operated in a semi-continuous mode, being fed with fresh sludge every 24 h at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 8, 10 and 12 days. Over the 24 h period the differences between the digesters, in terms of volatile solids (VS) reductions and biogas production, were not statistically significant for any particular set of conditions. Thermophilic digestion performed better than mesophilic digestion in terms of biogas production, VS reductions (except at HRT of 8 days) and specific methane yields and the optimum retention time was 10 days, at both temperatures. When gas production over the initial eight hours (probably the hydrolytic stage) was examined, it was found that the gas production rates for pre-treated sludges were higher than those for untreated sludges. This was most pronounced at thermophilic temperatures and a HRT of 10 days. Sonication did not affect the numbers of faecal coliforms in the sludge. However, gamma-radiation caused a 3-log reduction and, when coupled with mesophilic digestion, gave a product which contained < 100 g(-1) TS. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion produced sludges which contained < 1 g(-1) TS irrespective of any pre-treatment.  相似文献

In wastewater treatment plants with anaerobic sludge digestion, 15-20% of the nitrogen load is recirculated to the main stream with the return liquors from dewatering. Separate treatment of this ammonium-rich digester supernatant would significantly reduce the nitrogen load of the activated sludge system. Some years ago, a novel biological process was discovered in which ammonium is converted to nitrogen gas under anoxic conditions with nitrite as the electron acceptor (anaerobic ammonium oxidation, anammox). Compared to conventional nitrification and denitrification, the aeration and carbon-source demand is reduced by over 50 and 100%, respectively. The combination of partial nitritation to produce nitrite in a first step and subsequent anaerobic ammonium oxidation in a second reactor was successfully tested on a pilot scale (3.6 m(3)) for over half a year. This report focuses on the feasibility of nitrogen removal from digester effluents from two different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with the combined partial nitritation/anammox process. Nitritation was performed in a continuously stirred tank reactor (V=2.0 m(3)) without sludge retention. Some 58% of the ammonium in the supernatant was converted to nitrite. At 30 degrees C the maximum dilution rate D(x) was 0.85 d(-1), resulting in nitrite production of 0.35 kg NO(2)-N m(-3)(reactor) d(-1). The nitrate production was marginal. The anaerobic ammonium oxidation was carried out in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR, V=1.6 m(3)) with a nitrogen elimination rate of 2.4 kg N m(-3)(reactor) d(-1) during the nitrite-containing periods of the SBR cycle. Over 90% of the inlet nitrogen load to the anammox reactor was removed and the sludge production was negligible. The nitritation efficiency of the first reactor limited the overall maximum rate of nitrogen elimination.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of cheese whey wastewaters (CW) was investigated in a system consisting of an ecological pretreatment followed by upflow anaerobic filter (UAF). The pretreatment was conducted to solve the inhibition problems during anaerobic treatment of CW caused by the amounts of fats, proteins and carbohydrates and to avoid the major problems of clogging in the reactor. The optimized ecological pretreatment of diluted CW induce removal yields of 50% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 60% of total suspended solids (TSS) after acidification by Lactobacillus paracasei at 32 degrees C during 20 h and neutralization with lime. The pretreated CW was used to feed UAF (35 degrees C). The effects of organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the pretreated CW anaerobic degradation were examined. The average total COD removals achieved was 80-90%. The performance of the reactor was depressed by increasing the COD concentration to 20 g/l (OLR = 4 gCOD/ld) and the COD removal efficiency was reduced to 72%. Significant methane yield (280 l/kg COD removal) was obtained at an HRT of 2 days.  相似文献

In the present study the performance of anaerobic-aerobic one and two stage processes for the biological treatment of synthetic wastewaters containing Reactive Black 5 (RB5) were studied and compared with each other. In both processes the majority of colour removal by biodegradation occurred under anaerobic environment. The colour change under aerobic conditions was correlated with extent of anaerobic decolourisation in the preceding phase/stage of the process. Partial mineralisation of the anaerobic dye metabolites, roughly to the same extent, was achieved aerobically in both one stage and two stage processes. The majority of COD was removed in the anaerobic stage for two stage processes and aerobic stage in one stage processes. In one stage processes, the exposure of anaerobic sludge to alternating anaerobic-aerobic environment decreased anaerobic decolourisation efficiency and COD removal; when employing activated sludge, the same exposure enhanced anaerobic substrate utilisation whereas the effect on the anaerobic decolourisation efficiency depended on RB5 concentration. The comparative performance of one and two stage processes in terms of overall dye decolourisation depended on RB5 concentration. Both types of processes brought about similar overall COD removal. Increase in RB5 concentration, in the range studied, resulted in decrease in overall COD removal for both processes.  相似文献

The fate of indicator bacteria, a bacterial pathogen, and total aerobic bacteria during aerobic and anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge under laboratory conditions was determined. Correlation coefficients were calculated between physical and chemical parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total solids, and volatile solids) and either the daily change in bacterial numbers or the percentage of bacteria in the supernatant. The major factor influencing survival of Salmonella typhimurium and indicator bacteria during aerobic digestion was the temperature of sludge digestion. At 28 degrees C with greater than 4 mg of dissolved oxygen per liter, the daily change in numbers of these bacteria was approximately -1.0 log10/ml. At 6 degrees C, the daily change was less than -0.3 log10/ml. Most of the bacteria were associated with the sludge flocs during aerobic digestion of sludge at 28 degrees C with greater than 2.4 mg of dissolved oxygen per liter. Lowering the temperature or the amount of dissolved oxygen decreased the fraction of bacteria associated with the flocs and increased the fraction found in the supernatant.  相似文献

In this study, a comparison of the biodegradation of adsorbed organic halogen compounds (AOX) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic digestion (seeded with waste activated sludge) at different hydraulic retention times (HRT 18, 22 and 26 days in the mesophilic digester and 8, 12, 18, 22 and 26 days in the thermophilic digester) was performed. Results obtained in this work showed an enhancement of both PCB and AOX biodegradation under thermophilic conditions. The total PCB removal efficiency was in the range of 59.4–83.5% under thermophilic conditions and 33.0–58.0% under mesophilic conditions. HRT played an important role in the digester performance since high working HRTs implied more reduction of the total PCB amount in the sludge. The total PCB content in the treated sludge under thermophilic conditions lied below the cut-off limit proposed in the 3rd draft of Directive presented to the European Commission [CEC, Working Document on Sludge (3rd Draft), Commission of the European Communities Directorate-General Environment, ENV.E.3/LM, Brussels, 27 April 2000]. Besides, a bioaccumulation of lightly chlorinated PCBs was detected in the mesophilic digester, which is in concordance with the theory that the PCBs are anaerobically biodegraded by means of a reductive dechlorination mechanism. On the other hand, the AOX removal efficiency was in the range of 40.4–50.3% for thermophilic conditions and 30.2–43.2% for mesophilic conditions. The AOX content in the treated sludge of both thermophilic and mesophilic digesters did not exceed the cut-off limit proposed in the 3rd draft [CEC, Working Document on Sludge (3rd Draft), Commission of the European Communities Directorate-General Environment, ENV.E.3/LM, Brussels, 27 April 2000]. Moreover, high HRTs promoted an improvement of the AOX removal capacity of the anaerobic digestion.  相似文献

Nitrogen transformations during aerobic/anoxic sludge digestion   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Laboratory experiments were conducted to study and compare nitrogen transformations occurring under both aerobic digestion and aerobic/anoxic (A/A) digestion. The process performance was examined at different sludge residence times (SRTs), temperatures and anoxic cycles. Both modes of operation gave comparable solids reduction results. However, introduction of anoxic periods to aerobic sludge digestion appears to be a promising alternative to control pH during digestion through endogenous nitrate respiration (ENR). Operating an aerobic digester with an anoxic phase to achieve complete denitrification would also improve supernatant quality over that achieved solely by aerobic digestion. Alternating A/A operation can conserve most of the influent alkalinity and maintain near neutral pH condition over prolonged periods. The A/A digestion of mixed primary/waste-activated sludge achieved up to 43.7% reductions in volatile suspended solids, 33.7% removal of total nitrogen, and a specific ENR rate of 5.75 x 10(-2) mg NO3-N/mg VSSd. Optimum results were obtained at 10 d SRT, 30 degrees C temperature, and 50% anoxic cycle length.  相似文献

Biodegradation of nitrobenzene by a sequential anaerobic-aerobic process   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Nitrobenzene was completely degraded by mixed cultures using a sequential anaerobic-aerobic treatment process. Under anaerobic conditions in a fixed-bed column aniline was formed from nitrobenzene through gratuitous reduction by cells of sewage sludge. This reaction was accelerated by the addition of glucose. Complete mineralization of aniline was accomplished by subsequent aerobic treatment using activated sludge as inoculum. The maximum degradation rate of nitrobenzene (4.5 mM) in the two-stage system was 552 mg l–1d–1, referring to 154 mg of nitrobenzene per gram of glucose. In a second experimental phase glucose as cosubstrate and H-donor was replaced by synthetic waste containing ethanol, methanol, isopropanol and acetone. Again, nitrobenzene (1.9 mM) was completely degraded (maximum degradation rate of 237 mg ld–1, referring to 251 mg per gram of solvents). The major advantage of the described two-stage process is that the reduction of nitrobenzene by anaerobic pretreatment drastically reduces emission by stripping during aerobic treatment.Abbreviations HRT hydraulic retention time - OD546 optical density at 546 nm  相似文献

Degradation of household biowaste in reactors.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Household derived biowaste was degraded by biological methods. The system involves the combined method of low-solids (up to 10% w/v of total solids (TS)) anaerobic digestion and aerobic degradation for the recovery of energy (biogas) and the production of fine humus-like material which can be used as a soil amender or a substrate for further thermal treatment (pyrolysis, gasification). The performance of batch and continuous processes carried out in bioreactors (stirred tank reactor, air-lift) of working volume 6 and 18 dm(3), at different temperatures (25-42 degrees C) was monitored by reduction of TS, volatile solids, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, C/N in time. The application of continuous process with recirculation (33%) caused that for residence time of 8-16 h the obtained degree of organic load reduction was similar to that obtained after 72-96 h of the batch process. The experimental data of batch aerobic degradation was also subjected to kinetic analysis. The sequence of the two processes: aerobic and anaerobic or anaerobic and aerobic showed that the degree of organic load reduction was similar in both cases, while the amount of produced biogas was four times higher when the first stage was anaerobic. The final product after dewatering was subjected to pyrolysis and gasification. The gases obtained were characterised by a high heat of combustion of about 11-15 MJ Nm(-3).  相似文献

The present work investigates 1-anthraquinone sulphonate (1-AS) biodegradation under (i) aerobic conditions using domestic activated sludge as inoculum, (ii) anaerobic conditions using sludge from an anaerobic domestic wastewater treatment digestor in a sulphate-containing or methanogenic environment, (iii) a combination of anaerobic followed by aerobic conditions. The process was evaluated in terms of primary degradation, i.e. 1-AS elimination and ultimate degradation, as total dissolved organic carbon removal. It was shown that aerobic conditions lead to the complete primary and ultimate degradation, of 1-AS. By contrast, neither under sulphato-reductive nor methanogenic conditions does anaerobic digestion lead to the significant degradation of 1-AS. The use of anaerobic treatment followed by aerobic treatment did not improve degradation. Indeed aerobic post-treatment resulted in the re-appearance of pollutant in the medium even though this had been partly degraded under anaerobic conditions. With the rapid development of scaled anaerobic digestion of pig manure, the generation of liquid anaerobic digestate exceeds the farmland loading capacity, causing serious environmental pollution. Three laboratory‐scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs; planted + aeration, planted, and unplanted) were set up to investigate the feasibility of liquid digestate treatment in wetlands. Treatment capacity in different wetlands was evaluated under different influent concentrations (chemical oxygen demand [COD], 5 days biochemical oxygen demand [BOD5], and nitrogen forms). The effect of aeration and effluent recirculation on organic matter and total nitrogen removal was investigated. Results showed that integrating intermittent aeration in CWs significantly improved the oxygen condition (p < 0.01) in the wetland bed and promoted BOD5 removal to 90% in aerated CWs as compared with <15% in the unaerated CWs. Meanwhile, COD removal between these three wetlands did not show any difference and varied from 52 to 72% under influent concentration of 200–820 mg/L because of the high content of hard‐degradable organic matter in the liquid digestate. Intermittent aeration resulted in high ammonium removal (>98%) although the influent loading varied from 65 to 350 mg/L. However, intermittent aeration caused nitrate accumulation of 300 mg/L and limited total nitrogen (TN) removal of 33%. To intensify the TN removal, we verified effluent recirculation to increase the removal efficiency of TN to 78%. These results not only show the potential application of CWs for treatment of high‐strength liquid anaerobic digested slurry, but also indicate the significance of intermittent aeration on the enhanced removal of organic matter and ammonium.  相似文献

Aerobic degradation experiments with the racemic mixtures of mecoprop and dichlorprop revealed that activated sludge collected from the aeration tank of a municipal waste water treatment plant degraded both enantiomers of mecoprop and dichlorprop within 7 days, albeit in an enantioselective manner; the (S) enantiomers were preferentially degraded. Mecoprop, dichlorprop, and 2,4-D were completely metabolized under aerobic conditions, as shown by the 86–98% elimination of dissolved organic carbon. Under anaerobic conditions, the concentration of 2,4-D decreased exponentially with a first-order reaction rate constant of 0.24 per day and without a lag-phase. After an incubation time of 17 days, 2,4-D was completely removed. 2,4-Dichlorophenol was the main metabolite of anaerobic 2,4-D degradation; only traces of 4-chlorophenol were detected. In contrast, the chiral phenoxypropionic acid herbicides mecoprop and dichlorprop persisted under anaerobic conditions during 49 days of incubation.  相似文献

The feasibility of using a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process to treat sewage was examined in this study. The obtained results showed that total nitrogen (TN) could be efficiently removed by 88.38% when influent TN and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 45.87 and 44.40 mg/L, respectively. In the first stage, nitritation was instantly achieved by the bioaugmentation strategy, and can be maintained under limited oxygen condition (below 0.2mg/L). The ratio of nitrite to ammonium in the effluent of the nitritation reactor can be controlled at approximate 1.0 by adjusting aeration rate. In the second stage, anammox was realized in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, where the total nitrogen removal rate was 0.40 kg Nm(-3)d(-1) under limited-substrate condition. Therefore, the organic matter in sewage can be firstly concentrated in biomass which could generate biogas (energy). Then, nitrogen in sewage could be removed in a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process.  相似文献
