STELLER SEA LION BODY CONDITION INDICES   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We evaluated various measurements of mass, morphology, and blubber thickness as indices of fatness for Steller sea lions by correlation with the percentage of total body mass comprised by the sculp (%SCULP). We concluded LMD-index was the best index evaluated because it had a relatively high r 2 (0.58), had a linear relationship with %SCULP, and the intercept term was not different from O. We suggest the development of a LMD-index for otariids would likely reduce the unexplained variation in the index. We developed a multiple regression model ( r 2= 0.745, P < 0.001) for predicting %SCULP with LMD-index and functions of sex, age, and season as predictor variables. Steller sea lions < 5 yr of age had higher %SCULP values than those ≥ 5 yr. %SCULP declined with age for sea lions < 5 yr. Both younger and older males were fatter during the winter/spring period than during summer/ fall. Females of both age classes had similar %SCULP values throughout the year. Steller sea lions are relatively lean pinnipeds; estimates of blubber and total body lipids ranged from 5% to 17% of total body mass.  相似文献

Estimation of fish activity costs using underwater video cameras   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Swimming speed and activity costs of dace ( Phoxinus eos × P. neogaeus ) were estimated in the field using underwater video cameras. Activity costs were estimated by converting swimming speeds and the number of movements into swimming costs. Average swimming speed ranged from 6.7 to 12.2 cm.s−1 across 2 h periods and varied significantly among dates and time of day. The time spent swimming by dace ranged from 616 to 17 640 s 2 h−1. Activity costs per 2h period ranged from 2.1 to 4O.2J 2h−1 and were strongly correlated to the time spent swimming. Daily activity cost estimated using the cameras averaged 128.9J day−1 and was equivalent to 1.7 times the standard metabolic rate. Activity cost predicted using a bioenergetic model in conjunction with independent estimates of consumption and growth rates averaged 138.8J day−1. This study indicated that swimming characteristics and activity costs of dace varied significantly both within and among days. These analyses also indicated that equally valid activity costs for fish in the field can be estimated using video cameras and the difference between Consumption and growth rates.  相似文献

Satellite-linked radio telemetry was used to study the geographic movements and vertical movement behaviour of the Pacific sleeper shark Somniosus pacificus . The fish were tagged near Steller sea lion Eumetopias jubatus rookeries in the Gulf of Alaska during periods when Steller sea lions pups were most vulnerable to predation; when Steller sea lion pups first enter the water (July to August) and when Steller sea lion pups are weaned (April to May). Final locations recovered from most Pacific sleeper sharks (76%) were within 100 km of release locations, 16% were within 100–250 km and 8% were within 250–500 km. The most striking behavioural feature was their extensive, nearly continuous vertical movements. Median daily depth range was 184 m; the most time (61%) was spent between 150 and 450 m, but ascents above 100 m were common (58% of days). Median vertical movement rate was 6 km day−1 and steady. The longest period of continuous vertical movement (> 60 m h−1) was 330 h. Systematic vertical oscillations were most common (60%), followed by diel vertical migrations (25%) and irregular vertical movements (15%). The Pacific sleeper sharks travelled below the photic zone during the day and approached the surface at night. Pacific sleeper sharks appear to employ a stealth and ambush hunting strategy that incorporates slow vertical oscillations to search for prey, and cryptic colouration and cover of darkness to avoid detection by potential prey. The depth and geographic range of Pacific sleeper shark and Steller sea lions overlap near four important Steller sea lion rookeries in the northern Gulf of Alaska, so the potential exists for predation to occur. None of the tissues in the stomachs of the 198 Pacific sleeper sharks collected during a companion diet study, however, were identified as Steller sea lion.  相似文献

A depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer would result in an increased UV-B radiation, which could have harmful effects on marine organisms. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of an enhanced UV-B radiation (280–320 nin) on the motility and growth in four Swedish phytoplanklon species. The different plankton species were exposed to different doses of UV-B radiation during growth. The growth of the motile dinoflagellates, Gyronidium aureolum Hulburt (Ba 6), and Prorocentrum minimum (Pav.) P. Schiller (Ba 12), was more sensitive to UV-B radiation than the non-motile diatoms Dityhim brightwellii (P. West) Grun (Ba 15) and Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin (Ba 16). One week of UV-B radiation 2 h daily (159 J m−2 day−1), had a dramatic effect on the growth of the dinoflagellates, while the diatoms were nearly unaffected. On the other hand, when given higher intensity of UV-B radiation (312, 468 and 624 J m−2 day−1) during the initial phase of growth, also the growth of the diatom, D. brightwellii, was inhibited. Not only the growth but also the swimming speed of the dinoflagellates C. aureolum and P. minimum were affected by UV-B radiation. The speed decreased rapidly after 1–2 h of UV-B radiation (312 J m−2 day−1), and after longer irradiation times the dinoflagellates lost their motility. G. aureolum exposed to UV-B radiation, regained normal speed after two weeks of visible light.  相似文献

Gyrodinium dorsum Kofoid responds photophobically to flashes of blue light. The photophobic response consists of a cessation of movement (stop-response). Without background light and after a flash fluence above 10 J m−2, 75–85% of the cells show a stop-response, while only 50% of the cells show this response at 5 J m−2. With a flash fluence of 5 J m−2, background light of different wavelengths either increases (614 nm. 5.5–18.2 μmol m−2 s−1) or decreases (700 nm, 18.4–36.0 μmol m−2 s−1) the stop-response. Two hypotheses for the mechanism of the modulation by background light of the photophobic response are discussed: an effect of light on the balance of the photosynthetic system (PS I/PS II) or an effect on a phytochrome-like pigment (Pr/Pfr). This study supports the idea that a phytochrome-like pigment works in combination with a blue light-absorbing pigment. It was also found that cells of Gyrodinium dorsum cultured in red light (39.8 μmol m−2) had a higher absorption in the red region of the absorption spectra than those cultured in white light (92.7 μmol m−2).  相似文献

Estimates of Steller sea lion ( Eumetopias jubatus ) pup production are valuable for estimating population trend and size. Currently in Alaska, pups are counted by visiting rookeries, driving older animals into the water, then walking through the rookeries and counting the pups, a highly disruptive procedure. At smaller rookeries, with good vantage points, pups are occasionally counted from the periphery of rookeries without disturbing the sea lions. We evaluated counts made from medium-format, color, aerial photographs as an alternative to drive counts and peripheral counts. Neither the peripheral counts nor the aerial photographic counts disturbed animals on the rokeries. There were strong 1:1 linear relationships between photographic counts and drive counts ( r 2= 0.966, P < 0.001) and between photographic counts and peripheral counts ( r 2= 0.999, P < 0.001). Precision was similar for all three methods of counting. We suggest that medium-format, color, aerial photographs is appropriate for routine surveys of Steller sea lion pups in Alaska because it is not disruptive to the hauled-out sea lions and provides comparable estimates with similar precision to drive and peripheral counts. Large areas canbe rapidly surveyed during periods of good weather with a minimum of manpower.  相似文献

The schooling behaviour of Atlantic mackerel was studied in a large tank at different light intensities in the range 12.6–1.8 × 10−10μEs−1 m−2. Variable light intensity was produced by accurately controlling the current to a green light-emitting diode (LED) 3 m above the experimental tank. Under high light levels (1.8 × 10−6μEs−1 m−2) mackerel always formed a single school, whereas at lower levels (1.8 × 10−8μEs−1 m−2) they swam as individuals. At light levels down to 1.0 × 10−6μEs−1 m−2 the mean nearest neighbour distance in a school remained relatively constant (0.3–0.9 body lengths), and individual mackerel swam along a path which deviated from the position of their nearest neighbours by less than 14°. As light dropped below 1.8 × 10−7μEs−1 m−2, both nearest neighbour distance and heading angle between nearest neighbours increased, with mean values of 1–1.8 body lengths and 23–92°, respectively, at 1.8 × 10−9μEs−1 m−2. The results are discussed in terms of ambient light conditions in the sea.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of diving metabolic rate are central to assessing the energy needs of marine mammals. To circumvent some of the limitations inherent with conducting energy studies in both the wild and captivity, we measured diving oxygen consumption of two trained Steller sea lions ( Eumetopias jubatus ) in the open ocean. The animals dived to predetermined depths (5–30 m) for controlled periods of time (50–200 s). Rates of oxygen consumption were measured using open-circuit respirometry before and after each dive. Mean resting rates of oxygen consumption prior to the dives were 1.34 (±0.18) and 1.95 (±0.19) liter/min for individual sea lions. Mean rates of oxygen consumption during the dives were 0.71 (±0.24) and 1.10 (±0.39) liter/min, respectively. Overall, rates of oxygen consumption during dives were significantly lower (45% and 41%) than the corresponding rates measured before dives. These results provide the first estimates of diving oxygen consumption rate for Steller sea lions and show that this species can exhibit a marked decrease in oxygen consumption relative to surface rates while submerged. This has important consequences in the evaluation of physiological limitations associated with diving such as dive duration and subsequent interpretations of diving behavior in the wild.  相似文献

Maintaining insulative fat stores is vital for homeothermic marine mammals foraging in cold polar waters. To accomplish this, animals must balance acquisition and expenditure of energy. If this balance is shifted, body condition can decrease, challenging thermal homeostasis and further affecting energy balance. Prior studies of temperature regulation in sea lions have neither quantified basic all-inclusive heat flux values for animals swimming in cold water, nor determined whether they exhibit consistent spatial patterns of heat flux. Heat flux and skin temperature data were thus collected from four captive Steller sea lions using heat flux sensors (HFSs) with embedded thermistors. Optimal sensor placement was established using infrared thermography to locate the major areas of heat flux along the surface of the animals. Experiments were conducted on swimming animals in a large habitat tank with and without a drag harness, and on stationary animals in a temperature- and current-controlled swim flume. All heat flux measurements were corrected by a previously determined correction factor of 3.42 to account for insulative effects of the HFSs and attachment mechanism. Heat flux from shoulders and hips was consistently greater than from mid-trunk and axillary areas in both swimming and stationary animals, suggesting that certain areas of the body are preferentially used to offload excess heat. Mean heat flux for animals swimming with a drag harness was significantly greater than for unencumbered animals, indicating a likely increase in heat production beyond minimum heat loss. Thus, thermal stress does not appear to constitute significant costs for Steller sea lions swimming under conditions of increased drag at speeds of approximately 1 m/s in water temperatures of approximately 8.0 °C.  相似文献

SUMMARY. (1) The average benthic density of Peltoperla maria in an undisturbed southern Appalachian stream was more than twice that of a nearby stream draining a previously clear-cul catchment in its tenth year of natural secondary succession.
(2) Peltoperla production estimates, using three methods, do not show a significant difference in production between streams draining the two catchments. We attribute these results to quicker growth and slightly higher densities of larger nymphs in the disturbed stream. Production estimates for the disturbed stream ranged from 498 to 560 mg (ash free dry weight) m−2y−1 while those for the undisturbed stream were 41–4–515 mg m−2 y−1.
(3) Our results reinforce the view that conclusions based solely upon numerical densities may lead to erroneus interpretations about the roles organisms play in ecosystems.
(4) Annual frass production by this shredder is about 20 times (10 g m−2 y−1) the secondary production of P. maria.  相似文献

Stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) values of individual tooth annuli of female Steller sea lions ( n = 120) collected from the 1960s through the 1980s were used for retrospective analyses of temporal changes in food webs in the Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific Ocean. We also examined isotopically contour feathers of tufted puffins ( n = 135) and crested auklets ( n = 37) through this period to test for broader isotopic patterns indicative of whole food web changes. Steller sea lions decreased slightly in δ13C and increased in δ15N values, suggesting an increasing trophic level and change in foraging location or oceanographic isotopic signature. Steller sea lion first and second tooth annuli were enriched in 15N and depleted in 13C compared with subsequent annuli, indicating the effects of maternal influence through weaning. The general pattern of increasing δ15N values among Steller sea lions supports previous conclusions regarding a reduction or redistribution of forage fishes and an increase of demersal and semi-demersal species in the North Pacific ecosystem. There were no significant changes in δ15N values for either bird species. However, δ13C values in both bird species again suggested changes in foraging location or a shift in oceanographic currents.  相似文献

Studies of health, survival, and development of juvenile Alaskan Steller sea lions ( Eumetopias jubatus , SSL) require accurate estimates of age for wild-captured animals. However, the value and accuracy of several potential predictors of age have not been assessed with data from known-age free-ranging animals. During 2001–2005, forty-six individual SSL originally branded or tagged at ≤6 mo of age were recaptured by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). Using a series of general linear models, we evaluated the ability of morphometrics measurements: permanent canine tooth length (CTL), diastema (DIAS), whisker length (WHIS), and dorsal standard length (DSL) to predict the age of forty-six known-age juveniles ( n = 46 ≤23 mo of age). Permanent CTL was the strongest individual predictor ( r 2= 0.80); followed by DSL, DIAS, and WHIS ( r 2= 0.70, 0.56, and 0.45, respectively). The inclusion of a single sample from a 44-mo-old sea lion suggested quadratic relationships between age and all predictors for older animals. Only models including CTL predicted age to within 6 mo of known age. The equation Age = (−3.0112 +[0.6726 * CTL]+[0.4965 * DIAS]) allows for accurate age estimates of SSL ≤23 mo for both sexes.  相似文献

A phytoplankton investigation was carried out in the subalpine, low-productive Norwegian lake Øvre Heimdalsvatn in 1969–70 and 1972. This paper describes the temporal and spatial distribution of the standing stock of phytoplankton, and phytoplankton primary productivity. The annual average primary productivity in 1972 was 4.0–4.9 mg C m−3 d−1; the annual average standing stock varied from 120 mg m−3 (freshweight) in 1969–70, to 250 mg m−3 in 1972. Phytoplankton species composition and size distribution is discussed. Throughout the year the phytoplankton is dominated by small (ultraplankton) species; μ-algae (< 5 μm) showed cell concentrations up to 15 mill. cells 1−1. The dominating group was chrysophytes; cryptophytes, dinoflagellates or green algae were at times abundant. A phytoplankton monthly budget and a diagram showing annual average carbon flow through the standing stock of phytoplankton are presented; the phytoplankton dynamics in Øvre Heimdalsvatn is compared to that of other low-productive lakes.  相似文献

Primary productivity of algal epiphytes on the surfaces of Phragmites, Potamogeton , and Nuphar was measured seasonally from June 1978, through June 1979, in the littoral zone of Lake Ohrid, using 14C methodology. Surface areas of individual macrophytes were determined throughout the study period through the use of a non-miscible surfactant and a calibration curve of surfactant weight versus known, calculated surface areas.
Mean total surface area available for epiphytic colonization during the study period was 1.032 m2 macrophyte surface per m2 of littoral zone for Phragmites , 0.810 m2 for Potamogeton , and 0.167 m2 for Nuphar . Seasonal rates of mean primary productivity of algal epiphytes on Phragmites from the surface to the light-compensation depth ranged from 84–1406 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1; ranges for epiphytes on Potamogeton and Nuphar were 77–586 and 69–268 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1, respectively. Maximum rates were observed typically during June; minimum rates were observed typically during August to December. Mean daily productivity rates over the 12 month period were for epiphytes on Potamogeton 167.0, on Nuphar 100.4 and on Phragmites 671.2 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1. Calculated annual production for epiphytes on Nuphar was 36.65, on Potamogeton 60.95 and on Phragmites 245.0 g C m−2 littoral zone yr−1. Epiphytic production data were typically considerably higher than production data obtained for littoral and pelagial planktonic algae and compare favorably with published data for epiphytic and periphytic production in Lawrence Lake, Marion Lake, and Borax Lake.  相似文献

Two small demersal fishes, the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus and the common goby Pomatoschistus microps , were quantified on soft bottoms at 20–40 m depth in the Baltic Sea, using a camera placed above the bottom. The largest numbers of gobies were seen following the settlement of young in late summer and autumn. Most recorded fishes were sand gobies. An annual average of 4·7 individuals m−2(0·24 g dry mass m−2) was recorded in 1983–1985 and 2·5 individuals m−2(0·13 g m−2) in 1997–1998. Using these densities, the annual goby food consumption was estimated to 100 kJ m−2 in 1983–1985 and 50 kJ m−2 in 1997–1998, corresponding to most of the annual macrobenthos production available to the gobies. The resulting goby production, assumed equal to 25% of the food consumed, must have been an important food source for the larger fishes occasionally recorded in the photographs.  相似文献

An investigation covering hydrography, chemistry, vascular and cryptogamic plants, nitrogen fixation, phytoplankton biomass and production, and zooplankton was carried out from April to November 1976 in tarn in W Norway, The volume of the tarn was 18000 m3 and the turnover time about 30 d. Temperature ranged between 3.6 and 23.4°C and pH between 4.8 and 5.5. Nuphar luteum and Carex rostrata were the two dominating vasculars-with biomasses of 117 and 97 g m−2, respectively The biomass of the bryophytes ( Sphagnum spp.) was about 510 g m−2 and the production of the order 0.2–2.1 μg (mg d.w.)−1h−1. Nitrogen fixation in association with Sphagnum spp. was estimated at 25 g yr−1 for the whole tarn. Phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms, green algae and chrysophyceans. The chlorophyll a content ranged from 2 to 20 mg m−3 and the carbon assimilation rates from 0.03 to 20 mg C m−3h−1 at 0–4 m depths. Production in the period was of the magnitude 22 g C m−2. The copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis was the most common netzooplankter. Large numbers of rotationrians were found during summer.  相似文献

The population density, age structure, biomass, growth and production of brown trout were investigated in four tributaries of the upper River Wye. The populations at each site were largely maintained by immigration from nursery areas. Abundance of separate year classes at sites on the three largest tributaries reached a peak at age 2+. On the smallest stream numbers reached a peak at 1+. Recruitment occurred throughout the year but decreased with age of year classes. Maximum O+ densities ranged from 0.04 to 0.89 m−2, and >0+ densities from 0.13 to 0.59 m−2. Average total biomass in 1975 ranged from 2.6 to 14.2 g m−2. Within the study sites annual trout production in 1975 ranged from 2.9–19.7 g m−2. Production values were dependent on age structure and population mobility at the study sites. In the three largest streams 2+ and 3+ fish contributed 66.3–88.3% of total production whilst 1+ and 2+ fish contributed 74.5–84.5 % of the total in the smallest stream. The mobile (non-resident) component of the population accounted for up to 60–70% of production at certain times of the year, but over the year (1976) accounted for =30 % of total production. The resident component of the highest annual production value (19.7 g m−2) was estimated to be between 15.0 and 18.2 g m−2.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Heterotrophic bacterioplankton growth and production rates were estimated in a tropical lake by various methods. Mean growth rates, determined by tritiated thymidine incoporation into DNA, frequency of dividing cells and increase in cell density varied between 0.013 and 0.014 (with a range of 0.006–0.026) h−1 corresponding to bacterial production of 1.16–1.22 (0.34–3.63) mg C m−3 h−1.
2. Heterotrophic bacterial production estimated from oxygen and inorganic carbon consumption in the dark were compared with these values. The oxygen method gave similar results, while values from dark carbon uptake were as much as 2.5 times higher.
3. Although the different estimates of rates of bacterial production showed different patterns, the existence of spatial (vertical) and temporal (diel and seasonal) variation was demonstrated. Bacterial production was 13–41% of the net primary production and 10–30% of gross primary production.
4. Bacterial grazing mortality rate was estimated from size-fractionation and metablic inhibitor experiments. Average grazing rates were between 0.34 and 3.77 mg C m−3 h−1 corresponding to 76–120% of the mean bacterial production rate. Organisms 1–12 μm in size, possibly mainly ciliates. were implicated as important bacterial grazers.  相似文献

The effects of UV-C (254 nm), UV-A (365 nm) and broad-band UV (280–380 nm) on guard cells of Vicia faba L. cv. Long Pod were investigated in the presence of white light (450 μmol m−2 s−1). UV-C (7 μmol m−2 s−1) was found to cause leakage of 86Rb+ from guard cells, while UV-A (0.3 μmol m−2 s−1) stimulated increased uptake in these cells. A relatively small stimulatory effect was observed by broad-band UV (3 μmol m−2 s−1) during the first 30 min of irradiation with an apparent equilibration of influx and efflux thereafter. Leakage of 86Rb+ from guard cells continued despite the removal of UV-C and an increase in the amount of white light from 450 to 1500 μmol m−2 s−1, suggesting that membranes were irreversibly damaged. Irradiation of guard cells with UV-C for 30, 45 and 90 min indicated that these cells began to be affected already by 30 min UV-C irradiation.  相似文献

The circadian rhythm in growth of the red macroalga Porphyra umbilicalis (Linnaeus) J. Agardh was investigated under different spectral light conditions in laboratory-grown thalli. A free-running rhythm was observed in constant green or red light at irradiances of 2.5 to 20 μmol photons·m−2·s−1, whereas arhythmicity occurred in constant blue light at 6–20 μmol photons·m−2·s−1. The circadian oscillator controlling growth rhythmicity in Porphyra uses most of the visible sunlight spectrum and possibly multiple photoreceptors with a high sensitivity for blue light and a lower sensitivity for red light. This was inferred from three experimental results: (1) The free-running period, τ, of the growth rhythm decreased with increasing irradiance, from approximately 25 h at 2.5 μmol photons·m−2·s−1 to 22 h at 20 μmol photons·m−2·s−1 in red or green light, (2) Dark pulses of 3 h duration, interrupting otherwise continuous green or red light, caused advances during the subjective day and delays during the subjective night; the circadian oscillator in Porphyra can discriminate darkness from green or red light, and (3) Low-irradiance blue light pulses (2.5 μmol photons·m−2·s−1) shifted the growth rhythm in red light of higher irradiance (e.g. 10 μmol photons·m−2·s−1), and a strong, high amplitude, type 0 phase response curve was obtained that is usually observed with light pulses shifting a circadian rhythm in otherwise continuous darkness.  相似文献
