The growth of two commercially important flatfish, turbot ( Psetta maxima ) (L.) and brill ( Scophthalmus rhombus ) (L.), was investigated in the Adriatic using whole otoliths (sagittae) and stained otolith sections. At variance with the pattern usually observed in temperate seas, the opaque zone was found to be laid down in autumn and winter, and the translucent zone in spring and summer. Growth rates differed according to sex, with the females attaining greater body lengths. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L=66.2 cm, K=0.31 years–1, and t0=–0.14 years for turbot males, L=81.5 cm, K=0.21 years–1, and t0=–0.48 years for turbot females; L=40.2 cm, K=0.49 years–1, and t0=–1.03 years for brill males; L=50.1 cm, K=0.27 years–1, and t0=–1.75 years for brill females. Growth rates and maximum age recorded for turbot were comparable to those reported in the North Sea.  相似文献

Two species of coastal flatfish (brill and turbot, Scophthalmidae) were analysed electrophoretically at 17 common enzymatic loci in samples taken from 11 sites representing the species ranges in Europe. Brill showed a mean heterozygosity ( H ) of 0·11 while that of turbot was 0·02. The virtual absence of genetic diversity in turbot is probably due to a very low evolutionary rate, and provides little evidence for population substructure even if various signs indicate the possibility of a hidden differentiation (presence of the taxon maoetica in the Black Sea and differentiation of a species-specific cestode parasite on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar). On the other hand, the weak geographic structure in brill seems to result from rapid recolonization following the last ice age.  相似文献

In vitro assays were performed to investigate microsporidian-induced intracellular and extracellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by peritoneal-exudate adherent (PEA) cells from turbot. ROS production was quantified using the fluorescent reagents OxyBURST Green H2HFF BSA (extracellular) and OxyBURST Green H2DCFDA succinimidyl ester (intracellular). Five days before assay, the cells had been elicited in vivo by intraperitoneal injection of sodium thioglycollate or spores of Tetramicra brevifilum. Elicitation with spores led to a marked increase in the proportion of neutrophils among PEA cells. PEA cells from normal turbot showed considerable extracellular and intracellular ROS production in response to microsporidian spores. By contrast, PEA cells from microsporidian-infected turbot showed considerably reduced extracellular and intracellular ROS production in response to microsporidian spores. Extracellular ROS production was affected by the addition of infected turbot serum to the assay medium, regardless of whether the PEA cells had been obtained from normal or infected fish. The presence of microsporidian-infected turbot serum significantly reduced intracellular ROS production by PEA cells elicited with microsporidian spores. These results suggest that (a) microsporidian spores partially suppress the repiratory-burst response of turbot phagocytes; and (b) infected turbot serum contains substances capable of modulating the respiratory-burst response of turbot phagocytes to microsporidian spores.  相似文献

In the Mediterranean, the parasitic copepod Lepeophtheirus thompsoni Baird, 1850 specifically infests turbot (Psetta maxima L., 1758), whereas L. europaensis Zeddam, Berrebi, Renaud, Raibaut, and Gabrion, 1988 infests brill (Scophthalmus rhombus L., 1758) and flounder (Platichthys flesus L., 1758). Experimental infestation of turbot by copepods from each of the three fish species showed an absence of any physiological incompatibility preventing natural development of the two parasite species, at least on one host species, i.e., the turbot. Moreover, interspecific hybrids were obtained experimentally, which implies that 1) there is no strict genetic barrier between the two species and 2) the natural prezygotic isolation results from a choice of the most favorable habitat. We discuss the origin and possible consequences of the presence, in the Mediterranean, of L. europaensis on brill and flounder, two hosts separated by their taxonomic status and ecobiology.  相似文献

The ecology of 0- and 1-group turbot was studied at Borth, Cardiganshire, during the years 1966–68. Newly-metamorphosed turbot appeared in the surf zone from July to October, Abundance during the period September 1967 to May 1968 decreased at an average rate of 25% of the sampled population per month. Fish of the 1966 year-class grew from a mean length of 4.5 cm in September 1966 to 14.4 cm in October 1967. Growth was fast in the spring and summer, slowing during the late autumn and winter. The most important food items of 0- and 1-group turbot by percentage occurrence and dry weight were polychaetes and mysids. The daily food intake of 0-group turbot in September 1967 was estimated as 2.5 % of the body weight per day.  相似文献

An enzymoimmunoassay (EIA) kit for plasma melatonin (MLT) measurements was employed in tench (Tinca tinca) and in turbot (Scophtalmus maximus). Tench and turbot plasma samples were purified with a C18 reversed phase extraction columns because this kit is designed for human serum measurements. The lowest detection limit of the technique was 11.48 pg/well with a sensitivity at 50% binding of 100 pg/well. Intra-assay and inter-assay CV (%) were always less than 5% (n=8), and 9% (n=6) in tench plasma samples, and less than 5% (n=8) and 13% (n=5) in turbot plasma samples, respectively. Correlation coefficients between EIA and RIA measurements in tench and turbot plasma samples were 0.93 and 0.89 (p<0.001) respectively. Diurnal and nocturnal plasma melatonin mean levels were 14.7+/-2.1 pg/ml and 87.4+/-11 pg/ml in tench (n=15), and 3.5+/-0.4 pg/ml and 28.1+/-2.1 pg/ml in turbot (n=15). These species showed a melatonin circadian rhythm as in other animals studied. The results suggest that the commercial kit used in this experiment could be a suitable and alternative method to RIA for plasma MLT determinations in tench and turbot although it is necessary to increase volumes (1ml) and concentrate daytime samples.  相似文献

Freezing of adult flounder Platichthys flesus and turbot Psetta maxima for 24 h resulted in mean decrease of total length ( L T) of 2·1 and 1·3% and a reduced body mass ( M ) of 3·1 and 1·3%, respectively. Increasing the freezing time to 25 days increased the shrinkage in turbot but not in flounder. The L T and M T conversion equations for the different species and time spent frozen are given. The differences between species could be explained by the higher volume to surface area relationship in turbot compared with flounder.  相似文献

Relationships between sympatric populations of four species of Cestoda belonging to the genus Bothriocephalus ( B. barbarus. B. gregarius, B. funiculus and B. scorpii ) and populations of their respective hosts Scophthalmus rhombus, Pserra maxima, Ciliata mustela and Myoxocephalus scorpius were investigated. The parasites were overdispersed within their host populations. The mean intensities of B. burbarus were 1.59 ( s.d. =0.83) in the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions) and 1.25 ( s.d. =0.53) in the Atlantic (coasts of Brittany). The mean intensities of B. gregarius were 62.3 ( s.d. =49.7) in the Mediterranean and 14.06 ( s.d. =18.48) in the Atlantic, compared to 1.78 ( s.d. =0.3) for B. funiculus and 21.6 ( s.d. =17.3) for B. scorpii .
The distribution of prevalence of B. gregarius corresponded to a lognormal distribution while those of B. barbatus and B. fwticulus corresponded to negative binomials. No differences in infection could be related to host sex. The parasitization of B. gregariusdepended on host size. In brill, infection by E. barbatus was independent of host size and remained stable after the fish reached 180mm in length. Parasitization of turbot by E. gregarius was lower in young fish (≤110–150 mm) and increased with the host size. Compared to the Atlantic populations of B. gregarius and B. barbatus, the Mediterranean populations were more frequently and intensively infected. The differences in the population dynamics of B. gregarius and B. barbarus would appear to depend on whether or not the life cycle involves a paratenic host.  相似文献

Winter samples totalling 2308 specimens of Trisopterus luscus (total length range: 13–36 cm) caught in northern Portugal were examined for infections with Lernaeocera lusci. Infection prevalence was of 42%, and infection intensity was 1.7 copepods per infected fish. Individual infection varied between 1 and 9 copepods per infected specimen; 30.6% of the fish had bilateral parasitosis. There was a significant correlation (P<0.01) between fish length and prevalence. Length-weight relationships of uninfected and infected fish were not significantly different (P > 0.05) and thus provide evidence that L. lusci has no effect on the condition of T. luscus in all the examined 1–cm size classes.  相似文献

During 1992–4, square (30 times 30 cm) sticky traps of various colours were used on a commercial cotton farm to trap adults of Coccinella transversalis and Adalia bipunctata which are both major predators of Helicoverpa spp. Both insects were attracted most to yellow traps which also reflected the most visible light between 500 nmand 600 nm(where green foliage reflects most light). When yellow was diluted with white to produce yellow-white hues, the light reflected between 500 nm and 600 nm was reduced and the numbers of C. transversalis and A. bipunctata adults caught on these traps were also significantly reduced. This suggests that C. transversalis and A. bipunctata adults can discriminate foliage-like hues (500–580 nm) from non-foliage-like hues (<500 nm and >580 nm) and are attracted to colours that suggest the foliage of host plants that may harbour their prey. Yellow sticky traps placed 25–50 cm above ground caught significantly more C. transversalis and A. bipunctata adults than those placed at 75–150 cm and are the most appropriate traps to monitor populations of C. transversalis and A. bipunctata adults in cotton farms.  相似文献

The reproduction of summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus (L.), occurring in the Middle Atlantic Bight was studied from 1974–1979. Males dominated the length interval between 21–35 cm t.l. and were essentially absent in samples >55 cm t.l. Females were more abundant in all length intervals >45 cm t.l. Length at maturity ranged from 24–27 cm t.l. for males and from 30–33 cm t.l. for females which coincided with length at age two. Ovarian egg diamerter frequencies indicated summer flounders are serial spawners and the trend in mean and maximum maturity indexes (% ovary weight of total fish weight) indicated spawning began in September and continued through February in 1975 and probably into March in 1976. Annual condition cycle of males peaked in September and was lowest in April while females' cycle reached a maximum in October which coincided with peak spawning time. Fecundity was related to length, weight and ovary weight for 1974–1977 and the length-fecundity equation F = 0.0007975 L 3.402 was found to be the best predictive relationship. The overall reproductive strategy of summer flounder was discussed and apparently tends to maximize reproductive potential through an extended spawning season, early maturation, high fecundity, serial spawning and extensive spawning migrations.  相似文献

The influence of Enteromyxum spp. infections on the carbohydrate patterns of the digestive tract of gilthead sea bream (GSB) Sparus aurata L. and turbot (TB) Psetta maxima (L.) has been studied. Histochemical stainings to differentiate the types of mucins and lectin-binding assays to detect terminal carbohydrate residues were applied to histological sections of GSB and TB uninfected or infected by Enteromyxum leei and E. scophthalmi, respectively. The number of intestinal GC decreased in severely infected fish in both parasitoses, though changes in mucin patterns were limited to the decrease in the staining intensity for acidic mucins in infected GSB. The TB stomach and intestine lacked histochemically detectable acidic mucins, or sialic acid detectable by SNA, in contrast with their abundance in GSB. Glucose/mannose, fucose and GlcNAc residues were less abundant in both infected hosts with respect to uninfected fish. In contrast, D-Gal and D-GalNAc moieties (detectable by BSL I) increased in most parts of E. scophthalmi-infected TB while decreasing (oesophagus) or remaining unchanged (intestine) in E. leei-infected GSB. The decreasing in the expression of acidic mucins and of sialic acid detectable by SNA in E. leei-infected GSB is remarkable. Differences in the carbohydrate patterns between both hosts could aid to explain the differences in the severity of both enteromyxoses. In addition, the changes induced by Enteromyxum spp. infections in the digestive tract of GSB and TB suggest a role of terminal carbohydrate residues in the parasite–host interaction.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1, Microhabitats chosen by young grayling ( Thymallus thymallus L.) were investigated by electrofishing. The first feeding habitat was marginal areas where water velocity did not exceed 15 cms−1. Fry fed on drift in the first 10 cm of the water column below the surface. This location was very stable during the first weeks of growth (mid-April to mid-May). When they were 3–3.5 cm long, fry began using benthic areas and gradually moved away from the banks towards the channel.
2. A downstream migration was noted from the beginning of emergence (mid-April) to the end of May. This mainly nocturnal movement involved all fish sizes and caused a complete removal of young-of-the-year by June from the spawning tributary.  相似文献

We describe here the mass death of predatory carp, Chanodichthys erythropterus, in Korea induced by plerocercoid larvae of Ligula intestinalis as a result of host manipulation. The carcasses of fish with ligulid larvae were first found in the river-edge areas of Chilgok-bo in Nakdong-gang (River), Korea at early February 2016. This ecological phenomena also occurred in the adjacent areas of 3 dams of Nakdong-gang, i.e., Gangjeong-bo, Dalseong-bo, and Hapcheon-Changnyeong-bo. Total 1,173 fish carcasses were collected from the 4 regions. To examine the cause of death, we captured 10 wondering carp in the river-edge areas of Hapcheon-Changnyeong-bo with a landing net. They were 24.0-28.5 cm in length and 147-257 g in weight, and had 2-11 plerocercoid larvae in the abdominal cavity. Their digestive organs were slender and empty, and reproductive organs were not observed at all. The plerocercoid larvae occupied almost all spaces of the abdominal cavity under the air bladders. The proportion of larvae per fish was 14.6-32.1% of body weight. The larvae were ivory-white, 21.5-63.0 cm long, and 6.0-13.8 g in weight. We suggest that the preference for the river-edge in infected fish during winter is a modified behavioral response by host manipulation of the tapeworm larvae. The life cycle of this tapeworm seems to be successfully continued as the infected fish can be easily eaten by avian definitive hosts.  相似文献

In studying populations of the land snail Arianta arbustorum in the eastern Swiss Alps, juvenile and subadult snails were found to be aggregated all the time, while adults were mostly aggregated during summer, the main mating period. The mean size of aggregations was 25 cm × 25 cm but varied, according to the area a grass tuft covered, while the intensity of aggregations was influenced by weather conditions. Densities of 10–15 subadults and 3–6 adults m−2 were found along ditches and streams, 2–25 subadults and 2–20 adults on uncultivated alpine meadows, while on scree-covered alpine grassland the density of subadults and adults was 0.3–0.5 m−2. The extent of daily movements varied with microclimatic factors and season and depended on the structure of the habitat. The dispersal rate was greatest in June (2.6 m month−1) and least in August (1.1 m month−1). In summer and autumn, active uphill movements were noted, a process which compensates for the loss of altitude by passive downhill displacements. Roiling down on snowfields and being carried away by avalanches and streams were observed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Gamogony and sporogony of two new species of Aggregata (Apicomplexa: Aggregatidae) commonly were observed during histopathological examination of the digestive tracts of octopuses from the National Aquarium in Baltimore. North Pacific giant octopus, Octopus dofleini martini Pickford 1964, from British Columbia and Washington state were infected with Aggregata dobelli n. sp. Sporocysts were smooth-surfaced, dark-staining, subspherical to subovoid, typically 18–31 μ m long by 15–27 μ m wide, and contained 9–22 sporozoites, 18–23 μ m long. California two-spotted octopus, Octopus bimaculoides Pickford and McConnaughey 1949, from California were infected with Aggregata millerorum n. sp. Sporocysts were smooth-surfaced, dark-staining, and subspherical to subovoid, 12–20 μ m long by 11–17 μ m wide, and contained 8–10 sporozoites, 18–31 μ m long. Both species infected the noncuticularized spiral caecum and intestine; A. millerorum n. sp. also infected the cuticularized esophagus and crop. Both parasites were present in the submucosa, muscularis, and serosa. Our observations of Aggregata infections in cuticularized regions of the gut and in the muscularis and serosa appear to be novel. Associated pathologic features included hypertrophy of invaded cells, edema, inflammation, and ulceration.  相似文献

The development of the retinomotor reaction was examined histologically in the larvae of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, L.) and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus, L.). In plaice retinal pigment migration is present from hatching, but, in turbot, does not occur until just before metamorphosis. In both species rods first develop at metamorphosis. Plaice show cone migration, but this does not occur in turbot. During dark-adaptation retinal pigment contraction started at ≈ 100 lux in all stages of plaice. Before metamorphosis pigment was fully contractedimmediately below 1000 lux, but after metamorphosis full contraction did not occur until the light intensity had fallen to < 1.0 lux. The thresholds for cone migration in plaice showed similar changes, although the actual light intensities were about an order of magnitude lower. In turbot there was always an abrupt transition between light- and dark-adaptation; the thresholds for this fell from ≈ 10 lux at the start of metamorphosis to between 1.0 and 10 lux at the end. The lower threshold light intensities in turbot compared to plaice may indicate that vision is of greater importance in the feeding of the former species.  相似文献

In recent years a new parasite, causing severe losses, has been detected in farmed turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.), in Northwestern Spain. Dead fish showed emaciation and cachexia caused by severe necrotizing enteritis, which affected all areas of the digestive tract. The parasite was classified as a myxosporean and named Enteromyxum scophthalmi. This study was designed to assess the response of the turbot neuroendocrine system against E. scophthalmi infection. Immunohistochemical tests were applied to sections of the gastrointestinal tract of uninfected and E. scophthalmi-infected turbot, and the presence of cholecystokinin (CCK-8), serotonin (5-HT), substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were documented. A higher abundance of both endocrine epithelial cells (ECs) and nerve cell bodies and fibres for CCK-8, 5-HT and SP were recorded in the gastrointestinal tract of infected turbot, whereas VIP-like substance decreased. The results indicate that E. scophthalmi infection in turbot induced changes in the neuroendocrine system, which may cause alterations in gut motility, electrolyte and fluid secretion, and vascular and immune functions.  相似文献

In recent years, a new parasite that causes severe losses has been detected in farmed turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.), in Northwestern Spain. Dead fish showed emaciation and cachexia caused by severe necrotizing enteritis that affected all portions of the digestive tract. The parasite was classified as a myxosporean and named Enteromyxum scophthalmi. This study was set up to gain insights into the immune response of fish against this parasitic infection. The kinetics of immunoglobulin positive (Ig+) cells in spleen, kidney and intestine from turbot experimentally infected with E. scophthalmi was studied. For evaluating both the progress of infection and the lesions induced by the parasite, we performed histopathological studies and for detecting Ig+ cells in situ we used an indirect immunohistochemical method. In fish exposed to the parasite, the number of Ig+ cells significantly increased in the intestine, the target organ of the parasite, whereas in spleen and kidney, haematopoietic organs where the parasite was not detected, the number of Ig+ cells decreased. Furthermore, the pattern of distribution of Ig+ cells changed in all three organs examined in recipient/infected fish compared with control fish (not exposed to the parasite). The results obtained in this study indicate that the infection by E. scophthalmi in turbot induced an immune response that involved changes in the number and distribution of Ig+ cells.  相似文献
