Factors affecting preference responses of the freshwater ciliate Uronema nigricans to bacterial prey

ABSTRACT. To enhance our understanding of the factors affecting feeding selectivity of bacterivorous protists in aquatic systems, we examined the preference responses of the freshwater ciliate Uronema nigricans towards three bacterial prey taxa, Pseudomonas luteola, Serratia rubidaea , and Aeromonas hydrophila . Potential factors influencing the predator–prey contact rate included the previous feeding history of the ciliate and physiological state of bacteria. Preference indexes were obtained from multiple-choice mazes in which ciliates moved preferentially towards alternative bacteria or the prey species on which they had been feeding. Uronema nigricans showed differential attraction towards the offered prey types, and these preferences varied as a function of the ciliate feeding history: U. nigricans growing on P. luteola showed lower preference responses towards the offered bacteria than U. nigricans growing on S. rubidaea . The bacteria in stationary phase elicited a higher degree of attraction than bacteria in exponential phase, probably due to a higher concentration of carbohydrates in the former. Therefore, this protist will preferentially swim towards bacteria in stationary growth phase, although the degree of this response will be affected by the recent feeding history of the ciliate. 相似文献

Environmental factors affecting essential oils variability in Thymus piperella L. are studied. The relationship between the bioclimatics index and edaphic factors with three chemotypes is determined through the application of multivariate analysis (CANOCO) and other statistical processes to both ecological and the essential oil data set components. Chemotype p-cymene γ-terpinene carvacrol shows a positive relationship with the aridity index (Ia) and Altitude. The p-cymene thymol chemotype is related to factors affecting water balance in both the soils and plants. The influence of climatic factors over p-cymene carvacrol is less evident. The compound p-cymene, common to the three chemical groups and the most abundant of all, presents positive correlation with the organic matter in the soil. 相似文献

Resistance of pathogenic Naegleria to drying, low and high temperature, and two halogens was studied. Dying made trophozoites nonviable instantaneously and cysts nonviable in less than 5 min. Trophozoites degenerated in hours at temperatures below 10 degrees C and in minutes when frozen; cysts survived according to the equation th - t0/theta 1,440/1.122T (t0 is survival at 0 degrees C; Tis temperature between 0 and 10 degrees C), but 1.5 h at --10 degrees C to 1 h at --30 degrees C. At 51, 55, 58, 63, and 65 degrees C, trophozoites survived about 30, 10, 5, 1 and less than 0.5 min, respectively, cysts survived three to four times longer at 51 degrees C and six to seven times longer at 55 to 65 degrees C. Cyst destruction rates by heat indicated first-order kinetics with 25,400 cal/1 degree C for energy of activation. Cyst destruction rates by free chlorine and I2 also conformed to first-order kinetics. Concentration-contact time curves yielded concentration coefficient values of 1.05 for free chlorine and 1.4 for I2 and point to superchlorination as an effective means of destroying the cysts if free residuals are used as a guide and allowance is provided for low temperature and/or high pH waters. 相似文献

Only some of the diverse factors that can affect drug disposition and response in laboratory animals have been identified at the present time. These numerous factors contribute to large day-to-day variations that have become a major problem impeding investigation of drug disposition and response in laboratory animals. Although these variations render many experiments difficult to interpret and produce large discrepancies in the literature, few published investigations using laboratory animals provide sufficient details to permit replication of the studies under similar conditions with respect to these variables. Thus, the importance of these variables in affecting results is apparently insufficiently recognized at present. Two commonly overlooked variables affecting the activity of hepatic microsomal enzymes (HME) in rodents and hence the rate at which rodents eliminate from their bodies many foreign compounds are the bedding under the wire mesh cage and the relative cleanliness of the environment. Numerous chemicals present in relatively low concentrations in the environment of the animal room can significantly alter HME activity. Representative of these chemicals are aromatic hydrocarbons in cedarwood bedding, eucalyptol from aerosol sprays, and chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides, each of which induces HME activity, whereas ammonia generated from feces and urine accumulated in unchanged pans under cages may inhibit HME activity. Chloroform, identified as an environmental contaminant of the water and air of certain cities, exhibits sex and strain differences with respect to toxicity (LD50) in mice. After intraperitoneal injection, twice as much chloroform accumulated in the kidneys of males from the sensitive strain (DBA/2J) as from the resistant (C57BL/6J) strain. First generation offspring were midway between parental strains both with respect to LD50 and renal accumulation of chloroform. 相似文献

Antagonistic activity of the bacterium Pseudomonas cepacia against Trichoderma viride was greatly influenced by nutritional and environmental conditions. Xylose and trehalose strongly enhanced the antifungal activity of P. cepacia, whereas mannitol and glucose had little effect. The carbon sources that enhanced the antagonistic activity also inhibited sporulation of T. viride. Antagonism of P. cepacia was enhanced by ammonium nitrogen; however, with nitrite or nitrate there was only a little antagonism. The antagonism of P. cepacia was optimal at pH 5.0. Although P. cepacia showed maximum antagonism against T. viride at 37 degrees C, the antagonism was fairly good at temperatures as low as 18 degrees C, indicating that there is a broad range of temperature for the antifungal activity of P. cepacia. 相似文献

The levels of cyanogenic glucosides (linamarin and lotaustralin) and the activity of linamarase were studied in 5-day old
seedlings of oil flax (Linum usitatissimum L., cv. LCSD 200) under different environmental conditions. White light enhanced the cyanoglucosides content, and this effect
depended on its intensity and the time of exposure. The level of cyanoglucosides rose with temperature, and it reached the
highest level at the highest temperature (30 °C).
Linamarase (EC. 3.2.1.21) activity was the highest at 20°C, especially in light-grown seedlings. Lower enzyme activity at
the extreme temperature (15 and 30 °C) was observed.
Water stress (low water potential, ω=−0.34 MPa) reduced by more than twice the cyanoglucoside level and linamarase activity.
The possible protective, or/and regulatory roles of cyanogenic glucosides was discussed. 相似文献

Temperature and light interact to modify the chemical and biochemical composition of a nitrogen-limited marine diatom, Thalassiosira allenii Takano, grown at a constant dilution rate in continuous culture and under a light:dark cycle.The percent of the total 14C incorporated into protein, polysaccharide and lipid, the N/C ratio and the C/cell varied with temperature in a markedly non-linear manner. The N/cell was negatively correlated to temperature. The Chl ratio was positively correlated with temperature under saturating light and non-saturating light for temperatures > 25 °C, but was constant under non-saturating light conditions for temperatures < 25 °C.Productivity index (PI) was negatively correlated to temperature under saturating light conditions, but did not vary under low light. In each case, the variation in PI with temperature was governed by the variation in Chl .The dark carbon loss rate was exponentially related to temperature and independent of light. Variation in the percent of the total 14C incorporated into protein and polysaccharide, the ratio and C/cell was primarily due to the effects of N-limitation < 20 °C and primarily due to the effects of temperature > 20 °C. Variation in N/cell was primarily due to the effects of temperature over the entire range of temperature studied. Variation in Chl was caused by the interaction of temperature and light effects.In most cases, temperature and nutrient effects interacted to govern how a particular parameter varied with temperature while light affected the range of values over which the parameter varied.The percent of the total 14C incorporated into protein exhibited a significant linear relationship with .The dark carbon loss rate, ratio and Chl ratio data were used to test the applicability of a model for the physiological adaptation of unicellular algae. The model, with parameters derived from a non-linear least-squares fit of the dark carbon loss rate data, adequately described the ratio between 15 and 25 °C at 290 and 137 μE · m?2 · s?1, but failed to describe the data at 28 °C and at 48 μE · m?2 · s?1. We examined the effects of environmental and genetic factors on the weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) in sows. In order to perform the analyses of the environmental factors, 8104 observations of the 1st to the 6th WEI were carried out, while 6548 observations of the 1st to the 3rd WEI were carried out for the analyses of genetic factors. The environmental model included as fixed effects, herd, genetic line, year and season of birth, as well as the covariates, age of sow at farrowing, litter size at birth and lactation length. Genetic analysis was performed by repeatability and multitrait models. The mean and coefficient of variation for WEI were 7.02 days and 100.6%, respectively. The linear effect of lactation length and the quadratic effect of the age of sow at farrowing affected the WEI. Herd, year and season of farrowing were significant sources of variation for WEI, and there was no influence of genetic line or of litter size at birth. Heritability estimated by the repeatability model was 0.04, while heritabilities obtained by the multitrait model were 0.07, 0.02 and 0.07 for the first three WEI, respectively. Estimates of genetic correlations among the different WEI were of moderate to low magnitude. It was concluded that environmental factors, such as year and season of farrowing, lactation length, age of sow at farrowing and herd, should be considered in the model for best estimation of genetic parameters for this trait. 探讨努利虫疠霉Pandoranouryi(Remaudi埁re&Hennebert)H櫣mber在田间蚜虫种群中发生与流行的规律,研究外界环境因子对感菌虫尸产孢和孢子萌发的影响。结果表明,处于水琼脂培养平板上感染努利虫疠霉的桃蚜虫尸在8~25℃的温度范围内均能产生大量的初生分生孢子,在30℃下,仅弹射极少量孢子。8℃下,孢子弹射可以持续120h,当温度高于15℃,大部分的孢子会在48h内完成弹射。相对湿度小于95%,虫尸停止产孢。20℃下,光照条件不会影响虫尸弹射孢子的总量。在8℃和30℃时,24h后处于水琼脂培养平板上的孢子萌发率分别为45.23%和61.74%,显著低于15~25℃温度范围内的孢子萌发率(95%以上)。处于叶片上的真菌孢子,当相对湿度大于74%时出现萌发,但在盖玻片的表面,当湿度低于100%时未发现孢子萌发。 相似文献

Variability in ecosystems affects the life history of organisms. In marine ecosystems where interannual variability is high, relationships between fluctuations in oceanographic parameters and top-predator breeding performance are increasingly documented but it is less clear why such relationships exist. In this study, we examined the connections between marine environment fluctuations and breeding performance of a long-lived top-predator, the black-browed albatross Diomedea melanophris at Kerguelen, through study of resource acquisition and allocation processes. Our results show that this population used the same foraging zones and spent similar time foraging year after year, but adult body condition varied between years. Foraging trips are regulated mainly by changes in body condition. During years of low resource availability, birds return to their nest with lower body condition and adults in low body condition were more frequent and therefore were more likely to stop breeding. Poor breeding success was related to the presence of colder waters in the foraging zones of breeding albatrosses as measured by the positive correlation between sea surface temperatures and breeding success measured over 18 years. Lower breeding success was mainly due to failure by inexperienced birds. The results of this study demonstrate how oceanographic conditions affect breeding performance through allocation processes. We compared these results to those at South Georgia where the breeding success is lower and more variable. This population relies mainly on krill, a resource that shows a very variable year-to-year availability compared to fish prey consumed by Kerguelen birds. This study shows that, in the same species, differences in resource variability and availability affect the demographic strategies probably through differences in allocation strategies. 相似文献

The occurrence of mycobacteria was studied in aerobic brook sediments from 39 drainage areas in Finland. The culturable counts of mycobacteria were related to climatic conditions, characteristics of the drainage area, chemical characteristics of the sediment and water, culturable counts of other heterotrophic bacteria, and microbial respiration rate in the sediment. The counts of mycobacteria varied from 1·1 × 102 to 1·5 × 104 cfu g−1 dry weight of sediment. They correlated positively with the proportion of the drainage area consisting of peatland, total content of C, content of Pb, microbial respiration rate in the sediment, and chemical oxygen demand of the water. The correlations of the mycobacterial counts with pH of sediment and alkalinity of water were negative. The results of the present sediment study and of the forest soil study published earlier strongly suggest that an increase in acidity increases the counts of mycobacteria and decreases the counts and activity of other heterotrophic bacteria. Mycobacterial counts were more than 100 times higher (per dry weight) in forest soils with pH 3·5–4·3 than in sediments with pH 4·5–6·3. 相似文献

The uptake of soluble phosphate by the green sulfur bacterium Chlorobium limicola UdG6040 was studied in batch culture and in continuous cultures operating at dilution rates of 0.042 or 0.064 h–1. At higher dilution rates, washout occurred at phosphate concentrations below 7.1 μM. This concentration was reduced to 5.1
μM when lower dilution rates were used. The saturation constant for growth on phosphate (K
μ) was between 2.8 and 3.7 μM. The specific rates of phosphate uptake in continuous culture were fitted to a hyperbolic saturation
model and yielded a maximum rate (Va
max) of 66 nmol P (mg protein)–1 h–1 and a saturation constant for transport (K
t) of 1.6 μM. In batch cultures specific rates of phosphate uptake up to 144 nmol P (mg protein)–1 h–1 were measured. This indicates a difference between the potential transport of cells and the utilization of soluble phosphate
for growth, which results in a significant change in the specific phosphorus content. The phosphorus accumulated within the
cells ranged from 0.4 to 1.1 μmol P (mg protein)–1 depending on the growth conditions and the availability of external phosphate. Transport rates of phosphate increased in
response to sudden increases in soluble phosphate, even in exponentially growing cultures. This is interpreted as an advantage
that enables Chl. limicola to thrive in changing environments.
