Predicting the relationships between disturbance, biodiversity and productivity of ecosystems continue to preoccupy ecologists and resource managers. Two hypotheses underpin many of the discussions. The Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH), which proposes that biodiversity peaks at intermediate levels of disturbance, is often extended to predict that productivity follows the same response pattern. The Mass Ratio Hypothesis (MRH) proposes that the biological traits of the dominant species are the critical drivers of ecosystem function (e.g., productivity) and that these species increase in biomass rapidly after disturbance then stabilize. As a consequence, species diversity first peaks then declines after disturbance as a few species dominate the site. Both provide a conceptual link among disturbance, species diversity and productivity (an index of ecosystem function). We assessed the current state of empirical support for these two hypotheses with a literature survey and determined if their conformance is related to ecosystem type or site productivity. Conformance of IDH reported in past reviews (considering all ecosystems) ranged from 16 to 21%. This contrasts with our finding that in terrestrial ecosystems conformance to IDH was 46% (22 of 48 studies), 17% studies reported non-compliance, and 23% reported inconclusive results. Most studies explained their results with respect to IDH or MRH. Only two studies were specifically designed to test the validity of IDH or MRH. We conclude that (i) the IDH is mostly applicable to predict species diversity response to disturbance in upland sites of medium to high productivity and the MRH is applicable to organic sites of low productivity; (ii) there is a critical need for more studies specifically designed to test these hypotheses in natural ecosystems using common protocols; and (iii) enhanced understanding of these models will add value in refining management policies and in the selection of meaningful diversity indicators of sustainability.  相似文献

Hypertrophic phytoplankton and the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The provisions of Connell's Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH) were investigated in relation to the behaviour of freshwater phytoplankton in a hypertrophic lagoon, paying special attention to the link between species-diversity and environmental disturbances. Phytoplankton diversity yielded different indices depending on the basic unit of calculations (cells, particles, phytoplankton units, biomass). Although their ranges were approximately equal, they did not covary so could not be considered mutually substitutable. For the purpose of IDH testing, biomass diversity was chosen.Equilibrium states were considered to obtain in those periods with a very high fraction of total phytoplankton biomass, shared by no more than three phytoplankton species. Disturbances were considered as counterparts of equilibrium states. Disturbance factors were mostly abiotic, environmental features of the lake operating on the phytoplankton community at different time scales (co-occurring and with 1- and 2-weeks' lags). These scales may relate to the time required to establish phytoplankton community structure.IDH could be suspected not to hold for the phytoplankton of this hypertrophic lake, which experienced seven near-equilibrium phases and six disturbance periods throughout the study. As a rule, equilibrium states lasted longer than disturbance periods. The expected relationships between both disturbance intensity or frequency were not shown. Furthermore, no relationship was demonstrated between diversity (and hence IDH) and the phytoplankton community change rate. Wind stress probably played a minor role in triggering disturbance events. Disturbances were shown partly to promote small-sized phytoplankton communities. Finally, a plea for studying hypertrophic phytoplankton in greater detail is stressed if its responses to disturbances are to be fully understood.  相似文献

The 'Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis' (IDH) is one mechanism suggested to explain indefinite species coexistence. Hutchinson's original concept of the IDH was of a mechanism based on patch dynamics, and logical consideration shows that IDH works only if interpreted this way. Dependence on patch dynamics distinguishes IDH from Gradual Climate Change (GCC), though they are distinct also in terms of premature death of individuals, species selectivity, and the suddenness and transience of the perturbation. The application of the concepts of 'disturbance' and of IDH to phytoplankton communities is questioned.  相似文献

Phytoplankton behaviour in the middle reaches of the Orinoco river (middle basin) is discussed in relation to the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis. Seven sets of samples were taken from two channels formed below the confluence of Meta and Orinoco rivers between September 1990 and August 1991. The Orinoco river channel (ORISMA-1) had many more species than the Meta river channel (ORISMA-2). Chlorophyceae dominated both, except during the rising water period when Bacillariophyceae were dominant. The quantitative dominancy alternates among Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Cryptophyceae in both river channels, with minima averaging 14 329 and maxima of 1038 392 cells per liter. The phytoplankton concentration of both river channels is negatively correlated with variability in suspended sediments load. The Shannon-Weaver diversity for ORISMA-1 gives higher values than those from ORISMA-2 and oscillates between 1.37 to 3.52. Disturbances due to increases of water level and high concentration of suspended sediment can be the driving force governing phytoplankton behaviour in large rivers.  相似文献

The intermediate disturbance hypothesis has had success in explaining changes in local diversity in many habitats. Recent laboratory work has shown that disturbance may act to increase diversity in soft‐bottom marine communities as predicted by the hypothesis. In this paper, we present the results of a field experiment which tested the impacts of physical disturbance on soft‐bottom, intertidal macrobenthic communities. Five disturbance treatments were used, differing in the frequency of applied disturbance events; the highest frequency treatments were dug every week, lowest every eight weeks. The experiment was run for a total of 25 weeks over the winter of 1997/98. Our experiment controlled for differences in recovery time after disturbances. Abundances of Pygospio elegans, Macoma balthica, Hydrobia ulvae and Streblospio benedicti were all significantly reduced in high disturbance treatments, as was the total number of species. No species showed significant increases in abundance in disturbed treatments, and there was no evidence of an increase in diversity in any treatments. These results are discussed in the context of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. Our results suggest that the interspecific competitive effects postulated by the hypothesis are not important in structuring this low diversity, intertidal community. However, unequivocally rejecting the hypothesis is difficult because it contains many ambiguities, and acts more as a conceptual model than as a falsifiable hypothesis.  相似文献

In this paper we compared two different approaches to estimateplankton energy consumption: (i) combination of the observedbiomass-size spectrum and empirical allometric relationshipsbetween respiration and body size, and (ii) the experimentalmeasurement of ETS (electronic transfer system) activity. Thefirst approach was carried out through both discrete and continuousmodels. Results indicated a good agreement between predictedand observed metabolism in both a freshwater and an oceanicplankton assemblage from bacteria to zooplankton. The discreteintegration of the spectrum accounts better for changing systemsthan continuous integration, which is more appropriate for theoreticalapproaches to studying the metabolism of the community. Thecombination of biomass spectrum slopes and allometric exponentswas critical in metabolism sensitivity to size structure: flatterbiomass slopes (as found in microbial assemblages) allow forgreater variations in this size range to the totalmetabolismcontribution of the planktonic community. For future studies.the fast progression in technical discrimination and measurementof particles makes this approach a promising tool for the analysisof energy budgetsin planktonic ecosystems.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although the flower is the central feature of the angiosperms, little is known of its origin and subsequent diversification. The ABC model has long been the unifying paradigm for floral developmental genetics, but it is based on phylogenetically derived eudicot models. Synergistic research involving phylogenetics, classical developmental studies, genomics and developmental genetics has afforded valuable new insights into floral evolution in general, and the early flower in particular. SCOPE AND CONCLUSIONS: Genomic studies indicate that basal angiosperms, and by inference the earliest angiosperms, had a rich tool kit of floral genes. Homologues of the ABCE floral organ identity genes are also present in basal angiosperm lineages; however, C-, E- and particularly B-function genes are more broadly expressed in basal lineages. There is no single model of floral organ identity that applies to all angiosperms; there are multiple models that apply depending on the phylogenetic position and floral structure of the group in question. The classic ABC (or ABCE) model may work well for most eudicots. However, modifications are needed for basal eudicots and, the focus of this paper, basal angiosperms. We offer 'fading borders' as a testable hypothesis for the basal-most angiosperms and, by inference, perhaps some of the earliest (now extinct) angiosperms.  相似文献

Chimpanzees and orangutans have increasingly well documented local traditions involving learned skillful behaviors, often involving tools, which vary from place to place and are maintained by social transmission. These local traditions are most likely the antecedents of human culture. The complexity of local traditions is thought largely to be a function of the cumulative frequency of opportunities for social learning, and hence of the extent of tolerant gregarious foraging. Data on orangutans and chimpanzees are consistent with this hypothesis. This reliance on continued social transmission makes local traditions vulnerable to interruptions of transmission. I examine the disturbance hypothesis, which suggests that local extinction, hunting pressure, selective logging, and habitat loss in general affect the key parameters of the transmission process—innovation, diffusion, horizontal transmission—and hence will significantly impoverish the repertoire of complex skills for subsistence. Given current trends in orangutan habitats, serious erosion of local traditions is taking place. I also speculate that disturbance in the past has led to a significant loss of orangutan traditions.  相似文献

Three levels of physical disturbance were applied to corals in permanent 10x10 m quadrats along a section of fringing reef at Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef to investigate the response of fish assemblages. Tabular and corymbose corals were overturned and left in situ, reducing total hard coral cover from ˜55% to ˜47%, ˜43%, and ˜34%. Despite pre-existing associations with benthic cover, all fish groups examined (pomacentrids, labrids, chaetodontids, and acanthurids) were resistent to benthic disturbances at the level and scale at which they were applied. Partial Mantel's tests, in combination with partial Canonical Correspondence Analysis enabled spatial and temporal variation to be factored out from experimental effects. Most of the variation in the fish community could be assigned to spatio-temporal variables, indicating that spatial structure over the reef landscape may moderate localised disturbance effects. This study indicates that coral reef fish assemblages may be more resistant to disturbance than many correlative studies would suggest, and highlights a need for further information on levels and scales of natural habitat disturbance in order to apply a structured approach to the experimental investigation of the importance of habitat in structuring coral-reef fish assemblages.  相似文献

Environmental flows were released to the Macquarie Marshes (~210,000 ha) in north-west NSW of Australia between October and December 2005, inundating an estimated 24,600 ha of floodplain area. According to the flood pulse concept, the marsh floodplains would have stored large amounts of nutrients and carbon during dry antecedent conditions, which would be released into the overlaying flood water. Field studies were conducted in mid-December 2005 at two sites, one on open floodplain woodland with a sparse canopy of River Red Gum and ground cover dominated by saltbushes and the other on open floodplain with black roly-poly. At each site, nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), planktonic bacteria and phytoplankton were monitored daily for a 6-day period from the overlaying water of a floodplain inundated by the environmental water release. Those in mesocosms deployed in situ, containing marsh floodplain sediments that had been inundated artificially, were also monitored. The mesocosm results from both the sites showed that release of nitrogen was rapid, attaining mean concentrations of total nitrogen of 3.7–14.8 mg l−1, followed by more gradual increases in total phosphorus (mean concentrations 0.6–0.8 mg l−1) and DOC (26.1–50.2 mg l−1) within the 6-day experiment; planktonic microbial communities developed concomitantly with the increasing concentrations of nutrients and DOC, attaining mean densities of (6.0–6.9) × 106 cells ml−1 of planktonic bacteria and (80.7–81.4) × 103 cells ml−1 of phytoplankton; and for each site the overall measured condition of the mesocosm tended to approach that of the Marshes, over the course of the 6-day experiment. The present study (both observational and experimental) demonstrates that the floodplain sediments in the Marshes, which have been exposed to dry antecedent conditions, release nutrients and carbon to the overlaying flood water following inundation. These resources are thought to have been stored during the dry antecedent phase in accord with the flood pulse concept. Based on the mesocosm experiment, the released nutrients and carbon are in turn most likely to be used by microbial components, such as bacteria and algae, which develop within days of inundation of the floodplain sediments. Thus, environmental flow release provides potential for floodplains to attain a series of ecological responses including initial release of inorganic nutrients and dissolved organic matter and increase in planktonic bacteria and phytoplankton.  相似文献

Roots which are turned from their normal direction to directions at various angles with the plumb line develop the largest geotropic curvatures during a subsequent klinostat rotation period when the stimulation angle is well above the horizontal. In experiments with roots of Lepidium sativum L., the optimum is located at 120 to 140° when the stimulation time is between 2 and 15 min. If this fact is to be explained by the movements of amyloplasts in the root cap cells, one would expect roots which bad been kept inverted before the stimulation (so that the moveable amyloplasts are accumulated in the opposite end of the cells) to show an optimum angle well below 90°. — Pre-inversion of the roots did suppress the curvatures produced by stimulation at angles larger than 90° when measured after 10 to 30 min of klinostat rotation. This suppression may be taken as a support for the starch statolith hypothesis, since the amyloplasts in pre-inverted roots placed at angles exceeding 90° have a restricted opportunity to slide along the cell walls compared to non-inverted roots placed at the same angles. In pre-inverted roots measured after a period of klinostat rotation, however, no optimum was found at angles below 90°. When the stimulation time was 3.75 min, the response curves were nearly symmetrical about 90°. Stimulation for 15 min, on the other hand, resulted in curvatures which were much larger (although suppressed in comparison with non-inverted roots) when the stimulation angle was 165° than when it was 15°. During the 15 min stimulation period itself, however, pre-inverted roots curved 0.3° when stimulated at 15, but only 3.4° at 165°. This small difference was very highly significant and is in agreement with the starch statolith hypothesis insofar as the amyloplasts in pre-inverted roots placed at 15° have the greatest opportunity to slide along the cell walls. The lack of further development (and the actual decrease) of their curvatures during the subsequent klinostat rotation must then be due to other, depressing, factors, summarily designated as tonic. At angles above 90°, the tonic factors are either absent or even enhancing. Tbe tonic effects cannot be explained by amyloplast movements.  相似文献

Phytoplankton, submerged macrophytes, zoobenthos and zooplankton communities were studied concurrently in three lochs which progressively increased in trophic state. The phytoplankton showed a change in dominance from Bacillariophyceae (Pennales) and Desmidaceae in the mesotrophic Loch of the Lowes to Bacillariophyceae (Pennales) and Cyanobacteria in eutrophic Balgavies Loch and to Bacillariophyceae (Centrales) and Chlorophyceae in hypertrophic Forfar Loch. The Nygaard Compound phytoplankton quotient rose from 1.2 in the Lowes to 12 in Forfar. There was a decrease in number of species of submerged macrophytes, and in depth of colonisation from 5 m in the Lowes to 2 m in Forfar which was proportional to the decrease in mean transparency. Macrophyte biomass, however, increased in proportion to the concentration of total phosphorus in the lochs. There was a decrease in species of littoral zoobenthos, but an increase in density of profundal benthos from the Lowes to Forfar. Zooplankton also showed an increase in density with enrichment, accompanied by changes in dominance. Calanoida were dominant in the Lowes; Cladocera in Balgavies and Cyclopoda in Forfar. The importance of these differences in understanding the effects of progressive enrichment and to the management of the lochs is discussed.  相似文献

An investigation into the spatial and temporal distribution of protozoa in Esthwaite Water, a small eutrophic lake in the English Lake District, was carried out from mid-June until late September, 1977, during the period of summer stratification. Quantitative analyses of planktonic protozoan populations were performed on water samples collected at 1 m intervals throughout the water column and individual depth-time distribution profiles were constructed for the major ciliate species. Population density and species succession of the benthic protozoa was also studied.  相似文献

Copper is an essential trace element which forms an integral component of many enzymes. While trace amounts of copper are needed to sustain life, excess copper is extremely toxic. An attempt is made here to present the current understanding of the normal transport of copper in relation to the absorption, intracellular transport and toxicity. Wilson disease is a genetic disorder of copper transport resulting in the accumulation of copper in organs such as liver and brain which leads to progressive hepatic and neurological damage. The gene responsible for Wilson disease (ATP7B) is predicted to encode a putative copper-transporting P-type ATPase. An important feature of this ATPase is the presence of a large N-terminal domain that contains six repeats of a copper-binding motif which is thought to be responsible for binding this metal prior to its transport across the membrane. We have cloned, expressed and purified the N-terminal domain (approximately 70 kD) of Wilson disease ATPase. Metal-binding properties of the domain showed the protein to bind several metals besides copper; however, copper has a higher affinity for the domain. The copper is bound to the domain in Cu(I) form with a copper: protein ratio of 6.5:1. X-ray absorption studies strongly suggest Cu(I) atoms are ligated to cysteine residues. Circular dichroism spectral analyses suggest both secondary and tertiary structural changes upon copper binding to the domain. Copper-binding studies suggest some degree of cooperativity in binding of copper. These studies as well as detailed structural information of the copper-binding domain will be crucial in determining the specific role played by the copper-transporting ATPase in the homeostatic control of copper in the body and how the transport of copper is interrupted by mutations in the ATPase gene.  相似文献

Protein concentration data are required for understanding protein interactions and are a prerequisite for the determination of affinity and kinetic properties. It is vital for the judgment of protein quality and for monitoring the effect of therapeutic agents. Protein concentration values are typically obtained by comparison to a standard and derived from a standard curve. The use of a protein standard is convenient, but may not give reliable results if samples and standards behave differently. In other cases, a standard preparation may not be available and has to be established and validated. Using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors, an alternative concentration method is possible. This method is called calibration-free concentration analysis (CFCA); it generates active concentration data directly and without the use of a standard. The active concentration of a protein is defined through its interaction with its binding partner. This concentration can differ from the total protein concentration if some protein fraction is incapable of binding. If a protein has several different binding sites, active concentration data can be established for each binding site using site-specific interaction partners. This review will focus on CFCA analysis. It will reiterate the theory of CFCA and describe how CFCA has been applied in different research segments. The major part of the review will, however, try to set expectations on CFCA and discuss how CFCA can be further developed for absolute and relative concentration measurements.  相似文献

1. The composition and activity of phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacterioplankton in the lower River Rhine were measured in 1990 as part of an international biological inventory of the river. A seasonal study was carried out on two stations: one in the river mouth (km 1019) and one at the German/Dutch border (km 863). 2. High densities of phytoplankton (with up to 140 μg chlorophyll a 1-?1) and occasional depletion of dissolved silicate were observed at the upstream station. Phosphate concentrations were also lowered during blooms. 3. Phytoplankton blooms, dominated by a few species of centric diatoms, declined one order of magnitude during downstream transport. During non-bloom conditions (low) algal densities were maintained during transport, or increased slightly, indicating the suitability of the river reach for algal growth. 4. Bacterial cell number and production (measured by the 3H-thymidine method) showed a broad summer maximum with activity peaks (0.5 nK < M thymidine h?1) coincident with declining phytoplankton blooms. Winter values of bacterial production (0.02–0.05 n < Mh?1) were substantial, probably as a result of allochthonous input of organic matter. 5. Rotifers and crustaceans made up the greater part of the zooplankton biovolume, but at the upstream station the contribution of Dreissena larvae and rhizopods was also substantial. High zooplankton biovolumes, of over 500 × 106μm31-?1, were observed only during the phytoplankton spring bloom. 6. Quantitative relationships between the high phytoplankton production (2.1–3.4 gCm?2 day?1), the high bacterial substrate uptake (0.5–1gCm?2 day?1), and grazing were analysed for the growing season 1990. Algal grazing by metazoan herbivores was substantial only during spring, while the role of phagotrophic microplankton and cell lysis were indicated as major factors responsible for the downstream decline of phytoplankton blooms in the lower Rhine.  相似文献

Bacterial communities of the water and the biofilm formed during five years on an artificial substrate in Lake Baikal were studied by the pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments; taxonomic diversity of bacterial communities and differences in their structure were revealed. The biofilm community contained mainly representatives of three phyla: Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria; the amounts of other groups were within 1%. Bacterial community of the plankton was more heterogeneous; along with the dominant phyla (Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria) 15% of the members were of the other phyla. The use of pyrosequencing allowed to reveal 35 bacterial phyla in Lake Baikal, some of which were identified for the first time; moreover, minor groups of microorganisms (including only several sequences), which were not earlier determined by other molecular methods were found.  相似文献
