The control of feral goats (Capra hircus) was studied on Aldabra Atoll, Republic of Seychelles, from October 1993 to May 1994 and November 1994 to May 1995. A total of 832 goats was killed on Aldabra using the Judas goat technique and traditional hunting methods. Twenty-eight goats equipped with radio transmitters (Judas goats) were used to locate and kill other feral goats. The remnant goat populations on Ile Picard (n=13) and Ile Malabar (n=19) were eradicated during the first season. On Grande Terre, a total of 798 (374 M : 424 F) goats were killed. Mean group size was 3.2 with a range of 1–20. Judas goat hunting became increasingly important over time with 18.0% (n=85) of goats killed in the presence of Judas goats in the first season compared to 42.3% (n=126) of goats killed during the second season. The overall kill rate for the project was almost 2 times greater for Judas goat hunting (0.61 goats killed/h) than traditional hunting (0.32 goats killed/h). The home range size of each Judas goat and the number of goats killed in association with it was significantly related. Using the Leslie–Davis removal method of population estimation, 84 goats were estimated to remain on all of Grande Terre at the end of thebreak project. The Indian subcontinent contains 20 well-characterized goat breeds, which vary in their genetic potential for the production of milk, meat, and fibre; disease resistance; heat tolerance; and fecundity. Indian goats make up 20% of the world's goat population, but there has been no extensive study of these economically important animals. Therefore, we have undertaken the present investigation of 363 goats belonging to 10 different breeds from different geographic regions of India using mtDNA sequence data from the HVRI region. We find evidence for population structure and novel lineages in Indian goats and cannot reconcile the genetic diversity found within the major lineage with domestication starting 10,000 years ago from a single mtDNA ancestor. Thus, we propose a more complex origin for domestic goats.  相似文献

This study, conducted in the southwestern Argan forest of Morocco, aimed to assess goat feeding behaviour and goat diet composition. Overall grazing time averaged 387 min/day and represented on average 70% of total time when the goats were released on pasture. Grazing time was higher during winter months. Bipedal grazing was low and never exceeded 10%. Soil grazing varied according to the period of the year. Aerial grazing increased when herbaceous layer was depleted. Walking activity that accounted for 24% of the presence of goats on pasture, varied with the period of the year. Resting time accounted for less than 39 min contributing less than 6% of the temporal behavior budget. The contribution of all argan to the goat's diet ranged from a minimum of 47% in June to a maximum of 84% in December. Aerial argan leaves contributed continuously to goat diets a proportion from 35% to 68%. Under-tree grazing accounted for 50% during June when herbaceous plants and stubble were available, but less than 15% when they were depleted. Total intake changed with advance in season. Total goat intake reached its lowest level when animals spent large amounts of their time grazing argan trees in response to shortage of feed on the ground. Variation of the intake rate was mainly due to bite size, since rate of biting varied little among months. Goats ingested larger bite size from March through June when argan fruits were available and when diversity of availability was the highest. The goats adaptation capacity in argan forest allows a kid meat production when other ruminants such as sheep probably would not be able to do.  相似文献

Feral goats Capra hircus, considered among the world’s most destructive invasive mammals, were introduced to Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Seychelles, before 1878. An eradication programme to remove goats from Aldabra was initiated in 1987, after severe ecological impacts were recorded. Eradication and control efforts continued intermittently for the next 20 years, and a final campaign was launched in 2007 using the Judas goat method. We present the methods, eradication dynamics, outcomes and financial costs of the final eradication campaign between 2007 and 2012. This effort was divided into three phases; (1) establishment of Judas goats and intensive hunting (4 months); (2) monitoring of Judas goats (4 years); and (3) Judas goat elimination and verification of success (8 months). In the focal 5-year period, 227 goats were culled (of 2297 across the entire 25-year period); 202 in phase 1, 21 in phase 2, and four remaining Judas goats in phase 3. The eradication was completed and confirmed successful in August 2012, following the use of multiple measures to confirm the absence of goats. The total cost of the eradication was US$ 185,105, an average of US$ 815/goat, or US$ 31/ha. The eradication, although ultimately successful, posed a unique combination of challenges. We discuss key lessons learned and put the project in context of other major island goat eradications. The financial details, context and lessons are expected to be of value to future practitioners.  相似文献

Glossina morsitans females were fed upon goats or components of beef blood through an Agar/Parafilm membrane and for each fly the following were determined: fly weight, meal weight, posterior midgut trypsin, posterior midgut protein, anterior midgut trypsin, and anterior midgut protein. Secretion of trypsin was stimulated by feeding flies upon goats, defibrinated beef blood, beef serum, haemolysed beef erythrocytes but not washed beef erythrocytes. There was a significant correlation between posterior midgut trypsin and the amount of protein in the posterior midgut, and the slope of the regression of trypsin upon protein content was significantly different from zero. There was a significant correlation between posterior midgut trypsin and meal size for flies 0 to 24 hr after emergence, but not those 24 to 48 hr old when fed upon a goat. For unfed flies there was a significant correlation between posterior midgut trypsin and fly weight.  相似文献

The increasing popularity of recreational activities in the wild has led to concerns about their potential impacts on wildlife. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) often bring people into wildlife habitats, where they may disturb animal populations. We assessed the influence of ATVs on the behavior of mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) in a long-term study population at Caw Ridge, Alberta, Canada. We used multinomial models containing environment-, disturbance-, and group-related factors, to evaluate the response of mountain goats to the approach of ATVs. Goats were moderately to strongly disturbed by ATVs 44% of the time, and disturbance levels were mainly influenced by the direction and speed of the approaching vehicles. Environment- or group-related factors (e.g., time of year, distance to escape terrain, group size or type) did not affect mountain goat responses to ATVs. Because goat reactions were influenced by disturbance-level factors, we propose mitigating measures regarding the use of ATVs in the wild to minimize the disturbance to mountain goats, and potentially other alpine ungulates. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate mitochondrial distribution during in vitro maturation (at 0, 15, 20, and 27 hr of IVM) and fertilization of prepubertal goat oocytes compared to mitochondrial distribution of ovulated and in vitro fertilized oocytes from adult goats. Oocytes from prepubertal goats were recovered from a slaughterhouse and were matured in M199 with hormones and serum for 27 hr. Ovulated oocytes were collected from gonadotrophin-treated Murciana goats. Frozen-thawed spermatozoa were selected by centrifugation in Percoll gradient and were capacitated in DMH with 20% steer serum for 1 hr. Ovulated and IVM-oocytes were inseminated in DMH medium with steer serum and calcium lactate for 20 hr. Oocytes and presumptive zygotes were stained with Mitotraker Green FM and observed under a confocal laser scanning microscope. Ultrastructural morphology of oocytes and presumptive zygotes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Prepubertal goat oocytes at germinal vesicle stage (GV) presented mitochondria localized in the cortical and perinuclear region. IVM-oocytes at metaphase II presented mitochondria peripheral polarized to the region opposite were the metaphase spindle is positioned and within the polar body. Ovulated oocytes presented peripheral mitochondria distribution and mitochondrial aggregation around the MII spindle. At 20 hr post-insemination, mitochondria were distributed around the two synchronous pronuclei (2PN rpar; in zygotes ovulated oocytes whereas in prepubertal 2PN-zygotes mitochondria presented a peripheral polarized distribution. Images by TEM detected that immature prepubertal goat oocytes that are less electrodense and present fewer cristae than in vitro matured prepubertal goat oocytes; these are characterized by being associated to swollen vesicles. The effects of water deprivation, rehydration and hyperhydration were investigated in the black Moroccan goat (Capra hircus). Mean daily water intake was 46 ± 5 ml/kg in lactating and 36 ± 4 ml/kg in non-lactating black Moroccan goats, and milk production 21 ± 1 ml/kg. Mean urine excretion was 8 ± 2 ml/kg body weight in both groups, and the daily water losses via evaporation and feces were estimated at 23 ± 3 ml/kg during lactation and 28 ± 4 ml/kg during non-lactation. Forty-eight hours of water deprivation caused a body weight loss of 9% and 6% in lactating and non-lactating goats, respectively, and a drop of 28% in milk production with only a slight decrease in food intake. After rehydration, the elevated plasma osmolality as well as Na and total protein concentrations returned to basal values within 2–3 hr, indicating a rapid absorption of the ingested water, but urine excretion did not increase. After hyperhydration (10% of body weight), 46% of the load was excreted by the kidneys within 6 hr. In conclusion, black Moroccan goats have a low water turnover, and they can retain water upon rehydration but not store excess water after hyperhydration.  相似文献

Tibetan goats, Taihang goats, Jining grey goats, and Meigu goats are the representative indigenous goats in China, found in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Western pastoral area, Northern and Southern agricultural regions. Very few studies have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the genomic diversity and selection of these breeds. We genotyped 96 unrelated individuals, using goat 53 K Illumina BeadChip array, of the following goat breeds: Tibetan (TG), Taihang (THG), Jining grey (JGG), and Meigu (MGG). A total of 45 951 single nucleotide polymorphisms were filtered to estimate the genetic diversity and selection signatures. All breeds had a high proportion (over 95%) of polymorphic loci. The observed and excepted heterozygosity ranged from 0.338 (MGG) to 0.402 (JGG) and 0.339 (MGG) to 0.395 (JGG), respectively. Clustering analysis displayed a genetically distinct lineage for each breed, and their Fst were greater than 0.25, indicating that they had a higher genetic differentiation between groups. Furthermore, effective population size reduced in all four populations, indicating a loss of genetic diversity. In addition, runs of homozygosity were mainly distributed in 5–10 Mb. Lastly, we identified signature genes, which were closely related to high-altitude adaptation (ADIRF) and prolificity (CNTROB, SMC3, and PTEN). This study provides a valuable resource for future studies on genome-wide perspectives on the diversity and selection signatures of Chinese indigenous goats.  相似文献

The ability of feral goats to become pests is partly a consequence of the process of domestication. Neolithic people selected biological characteristics from wild goats, such as higher intrinsic rates of increase and increased sociability that have resulted in their domestic descendants becoming a particular nuisance when they escape to become feral. Feral goats live in about 11 % of New Zealand, mostly on land reserved for conservation of the indigenous biota. Their uncontrolled densities are usually less than 1 ha-1, but have reached 10 ha-1 in one area. The total population is estimated to be at least 300 000, which makes them the most common free- living ungulate in New Zealand. Most populations breed throughout the year, but show distinct Peaks of activity in summer and for some populations again in early winter. Most populations show a distinct decline in breeding in late autumn to mid spring. Annual birth rates can be high, up to 1.42 kids per female in the study populations. This is achieved by breeding twice within the year, breeding at an early age (as young as 6 months), and often producing twins and triplets. Feral goats are highly selective in what they eat, but have the ability to switch their diets as the more palatable food species are eliminated from their habitat. All these characteristics make goats particularly problematic pests on the conservation estate. However, domestication did not tum the goat into a complete r-strategist, boom-bust pest. Unharvested feral populations in New Zealand form dynamic K-strategist relationships with their resources that are stable, at least in the short term. This means their impacts are chronic, but the relationship can be manipulated to favour the resource if management can be applied 'chronically', i.e., as sustained control. The Department of Conservation has attempted to organise its control actions in the highest priority areas either to eradicate goats where possible or to sustain control where eradication is not presently possible. An annual budget of $3.8 million was tagged for goat control in 1990-91. Since then, the Department has acted against goats in 146 areas, and successfully eradicated 14 populations. In 1992-93, 6160 hunter-days of ground control effort, and 230 hours of helicopter hunting effort were expended against feral goats, and 10.2 km of goat fencing was constructed. The effort was similar in 1991-92, and larger in 1990-91. The Department is attempting to ensure their control effort is maximised and sustained via a formal national control plan, and regional Conservation Management Strategies. If the present effort is maintained over the next decade, about half the feral goat populations now on the conservation estate are expected to be eradicated or controlled.  相似文献

Elucidating patterns of adult survival rates is key to understanding population dynamics of large mammals. We used data from 7 separate studies of mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) conducted from 2002 through 2022 in western Washington, USA, to quantify survival rates in relation to key biotic and abiotic factors using known fate models implemented in program MARK. We monitored 324 (206 females, 118 males) radio-marked mountain goats for 178,339 days. A substantial number of mountain goats in our sample (n = 217) had been translocated from the Olympic Peninsula to the Cascade Mountains on Washington's mainland, providing an added opportunity to examine translocation effects. We adopted a sequential modeling approach, first building a set of models to examine fundamental survival patterns by age, sex, season, study area, and translocated status. We used variables retained from the top model in a second set to investigate relationships between annual survival and local weather covariates hypothesized by previous studies to influence mountain goat behavior, habitat selection, and vital rates. Survival among adult females in spring was slightly lower than other sex and age categories, but seasonal patterns were otherwise not evident. There were significant negative relationships between survival and winter snow depth, an index of the previous year's drought, and mean daily temperature during the previous May, and a positive relationship with previous year's precipitation. Weather effects were similar among resident and translocated animals. By the end of the study period, weather effects had evidently contributed to reductions in mountain goat survival to a level low enough that population stability was unlikely. Because the frequency of droughts and warm spring temperatures are expected to increase with climate change, mountain goat populations in Washington will likely be increasingly challenged as the atmosphere warms.  相似文献

Goats are traditionally slaughtered to celebrate marriages and births, venerate ancestors, address personal problems, or perform a ritual during funerals. The objective of this study was to assess nonhuman animal welfare issues associated with the traditional slaughter of goats in and around Pretoria, South Africa. Participatory research methods were used to interview 105 respondents. Four of those interviewed were visited to observe the slaughter process. The most common method of transport was a vehicle (47%), followed by transport on foot (30%). The distance traveled (68%) was usually less than 10 km, and in all cases, it was less than 50 km. The most common (57%) method of restraining goats during transport was tying all 4 legs together. During slaughter, assistants held the head and legs of the goat (55%). Prior to slaughter, the majority of goats were tied under a tree (66%). In total, 97% of the goats were slaughtered within 24 hr, and no stunning was performed. In this study, animal welfare problems were widespread. Research should be undertaken to find practical ways to address animal welfare issues during traditional slaughter.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to isolate, identify and characterize the secretory proteins of IVM oocytes and IVMFC embryos to evaluate its immunogenecity. and identify of such proteins if any, in blood circulation of estrus and early pregnant goats. Oocytes were matured in TCM-199 with 1 microg/ml, estradiol-17beta; 0.5 microg/ml, FSH; 100 IU/ml, LH and 10% FCS on granulosa cell monolayer. After 18 hr of maturation, oocytes were further cultured in maturation medium containing 3 mg/ml polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) without serum and BSA for 12 hr and medium was collected. The IVF embryos of 4-8 cell stage were cultured in medium containing PVA without serum and BSA. Embryo culture medium was collected after 24 hr of culture and was pooled. The proteins were analyzed on SDS-PAGE (12.5%). Four secretory proteins of oocytes with approximately molecular weight of 45, 55, 65 and 95 kDa and three secretory proteins of embryos 45, 55 and 65 kDa were obtained on SDS-PAGE in silver staining. The protein profile of midluteal, estrus and early pregnant goat serum was similar and no variation was observed among the proteins on SDS-PAGE. Two secretory proteins of 55 and 65 kDa of both IVM oocytes and IVMFC embryos were observed on Western analysis. None of such proteins was observed in midluteal, estrus and early pregnant goat serum on western blotting. It can be concluded that IVM oocytes and IVMFC embryos secrete proteins in medium and two of them can develop antibody. The proteins secreted from embryos till morula stage was similar to that of oocytes. None of these oocyte/embryo released proteins were observed in blood circulation of estrus and early pregnant goats.  相似文献

The mammalian Y chromosome offers a unique perspective on the male reproduction and paternal evolutionary histories. However, further understanding of the Y chromosome biology for most mammals is hindered by the lack of a Y chromosome assembly. This study presents an integrated in silico strategy for identifying and assembling the goat Y‐linked scaffolds using existing data. A total of 11.5 Mb Y‐linked sequences were clustered into 33 scaffolds, and 187 protein‐coding genes were annotated. We also identified high abundance of repetitive elements. A 5.84 Mb subset was further ordered into an assembly with the evidence from the goat radiation hybrid map (RH map). The existing whole‐genome resequencing data of 96 goats (worldwide distribution) were utilized to exploit the paternal relationships among bezoars and domestic goats. Goat paternal lineages were clearly divided into two clades (Y1 and Y2), predating the goat domestication. Demographic history analyses indicated that maternal lineages experienced a bottleneck effect around 2,000 YBP (years before present), after which goats belonging to the A haplogroup spread worldwide from the Near East. As opposed to this, paternal lineages experienced a population decline around the 10,000 YBP. The evidence from the Y chromosome suggests that male goats were not affected by the A haplogroup worldwide transmission, which implies sexually unbalanced contribution to the goat trade and population expansion in post‐Neolithic period.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Invasive mammals are premier drivers of extinction and ecosystem change, particularly on islands. In the 1960s, conservation practitioners started developing techniques to eradicate invasive mammal populations from islands. Larger and more biologically complex islands are being targeted for restoration worldwide. We conducted a feral goat (Capra hircus) eradication campaign on Santiago Island in the Galápagos archipelago, which was an unprecedented advance in the ability to reverse biodiversity impacts by invasive species. We removed >79,000 goats from Santiago Island (58,465 ha) in <4.5 years, at an approximate cost of US$6.1 million. An eradication ethic combined with a suite of techniques and technologies made eradication possible. A field-based Geographic Information System facilitated an adaptive management strategy, including adjustment and integration of hunting methods. Specialized ground hunting techniques with dogs removed most of the goat population. Aerial hunting by helicopter and Judas goat techniques were also critical. Mata Hari goats, sterilized female Judas goats induced into a long-term estrus, removed males from the remnant feral population at an elevated rate, which likely decreased the length and cost of the eradication campaign. The last 1,000 goats cost US$2.0 million to remove; we spent an additional US$467,064 on monitoring to confirm eradication. Aerial hunting is cost-effective even in countries where labor is inexpensive. Local sociopolitical environments and best practices emerging from large-scale, fast-paced eradications should drive future strategies. For nonnative ungulate eradications, island size is arguably no longer the limiting factor. Future challenges will involve removing invasive mammals from large inhabited islands while increasing cost-effectiveness of removing low-density populations and confirming eradication. Those challenges will require leveraging technology and applying theory from other disciplines, along with conservation practitioners working alongside sociologists and educators.  相似文献

This study examined the recovery, via biotic and abiotic pathways, of a grassland ecosystem after eradication of introduced exotic goats. We used path analyses to evaluate the relative strength of relationships among aboveground biomass, soil chemical properties (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content; soil acidity), presence of nesting seabirds after goat eradication, extent of vegetation degraded by goats before their eradication, plant species composition after removal of goats, and topography. Models including the same variables with different paths were constructed using the Bayesian estimation method, and the best-fit models were constructed by comparing deviance information criterion values. Results of the path analyses demonstrated that vegetation degradation and soil erosion prior to goat eradication increased soil exchangeable acidity, which resulted in limitation of aboveground biomass. Seabird nesting after goat eradication increased the quantity of soil nutrients, possibly through inputs of feces, eggshells, and dead chicks or adults. The increase in nutrients was affected indirectly, via seabird nesting, by topography and vegetation type after goat eradication. The direct and indirect relationships demonstrated by our results suggest the existence of complex interrelationships during recovery of ecosystem function after eradication of exotic mammals.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Unbiased estimates of mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) populations are key to meeting diverse harvest management and conservation objectives. We developed logistic regression models of factors influencing sightability of mountain goat groups during helicopter surveys throughout the Cascades and Olympic Ranges in western Washington during summers, 2004–2007. We conducted 205 trials of the ability of aerial survey crews to detect groups of mountain goats whose presence was known based on simultaneous direct observation from the ground (n = 84), Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry (n = 115), or both (n = 6). Aerial survey crews detected 77% and 79% of all groups known to be present based on ground observers and GPS collars, respectively. The best models indicated that sightability of mountain goat groups was a function of the number of mountain goats in a group, presence of terrain obstruction, and extent of overstory vegetation. Aerial counts of mountain goats within groups did not differ greatly from known group sizes, indicating that under-counting bias within detected groups of mountain goats was small. We applied Horvitz-Thompson-like sightability adjustments to 1,139 groups of mountain goats observed in the Cascade and Olympic ranges, Washington, USA, from 2004 to 2007. Estimated mean sightability of individual animals was 85% but ranged 0.75–0.91 in areas with low and high sightability, respectively. Simulations of mountain goat surveys indicated that precision of population estimates adjusted for sightability biases increased with population size and number of replicate surveys, providing general guidance for the design of future surveys. Because survey conditions, group sizes, and habitat occupied by goats vary among surveys, we recommend using sightability correction methods to decrease bias in population estimates from aerial surveys of mountain goats.  相似文献

Background

China has numerous native domestic goat breeds, however, extensive studies are focused on the genetic diversity within the fewer breeds and limited regions, the population demograogic history and origin of Chinese goats are still unclear. The roles of geographical structure have not been analyzed in Chinese goat domestic process. In this study, the genetic relationships of Chinese indigenous goat populations were evaluated using 30 microsatellite markers.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Forty Chinese indigenous populations containing 2078 goats were sampled from different geographic regions of China. Moderate genetic diversity at the population level (HS of 0.644) and high population diversity at the species level (HT value of 0.737) were estimated. Significant moderate population differentiation was detected (FST value of 0.129). Significant excess homozygosity (FIS of 0.105) and recent population bottlenecks were detected in thirty-six populations. Neighbour-joining tree, principal components analysis and Bayesian clusters all revealed that Chinese goat populations could be subdivided into at least four genetic clusters: Southwest China, South China, Northwest China and East China. It was observed that the genetic diversity of Northern China goats was highest among these clusters. The results here suggested that the goat populations in Southwest China might be the earliest domestic goats in China.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results suggested that the current genetic structure of Chinese goats were resulted from the special geographical structure, especially in the Western China, and the Western goat populations had been separated by the geographic structure (Hengduan Mountains and Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River Line) into two clusters: the Southwest and Northwest. It also indicated that the current genetic structure was caused by the geographical origin mainly, in close accordance with the human’s migration history throughout China. This study provides a fundamental genetic profile for the conservation of these populations and better to understand the domestication process and origin of Chinese goats.  相似文献

Guard hair and cashmere undercoat are developed from primary and secondary hair follicle, respectively. Little is known about the gene expression differences between primary and secondary hair follicle cycling. In this study, we obtained RNA-seq data from cashmere and milk goats grown at four different seasons. We studied the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) during the yearly hair follicle cycling, and between cashmere and milk goats. WNT, NOTCH, MAPK, BMP, TGFβ and Hedgehog signaling pathways were involved in hair follicle cycling in both cashmere and milk goat. However, Milk goat DEGs between different months were significantly more than cashmere goat DEGs, with the largest difference being identified in December. Some expression dynamics were confirmed by quantitative PCR and western blot, and immunohistochemistry. This study offers new information sources related to hair follicle cycling in milk and cashmere goats, which could be applicable to improve the wool production and quality.  相似文献
