1. The response of phytoplankton to the installation of an artificial destratification system in North Pine Dam, Brisbane (Australia) was investigated over an 18 year period (1984–2002); 11 years before and 7 years after installation. 2. An overall increase in phytoplankton abundance was revealed for some groups (in particular, diatoms, cyanobacteria and chlorophytes), but not for others (chlorophytes). Changes in the abundance of chlorophyte functional groups was attributed to eutrophication. 3. A strong spatial gradient in phytoplankton abundance and chlorophyll a was observed, with low abundance in the downstream regions affected by the destratification system which was likely because of light limitation induced by vertical mixing. The upstream region acted as a surrogate for the unaltered state of the reservoir, particularly as an indicator of eutrophication without direct influence from the destratification system. Despite the continuous trend in eutrophication of the reservoir, there has been a definite decrease in the rate of eutrophication (approximately 30%) since the installation of the destratification system at the downstream locations. 4. Correlations of the dominant cyanobacteria Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii with other genera changed after destratification, indicating that prior to destratification the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis was because of its ability to compete for phosphorus, whereas after destratification its dominance was because of its ability to compete for light.  相似文献

1. The relative contribution of dissolved and atmospheric nitrogen to promoting dominance of the toxic nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacterium, Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii was examined in a subtropical water reservoir, North Pine Reservoir. 2. A combination of process studies in situ and analysis of historical water quality data suggests that nitrogen fixation was not the principal mechanism for acquiring nitrogen and unlikely to be the mechanism whereby C. raciborskii gains a competitive advantage. Ammonium was the preferred nitrogen source, followed by nitrate then nitrogen fixation. 3. Ammonium uptake rates in the euphotic zone were higher in the summer and autumn months compared with winter and spring coinciding with lower ammonium concentrations. Nitrate uptake rates did not appear to vary seasonally and were lower than those for ammonium in the summer, but similar in winter. Nitrate concentrations were higher in winter than summer and generally higher than ammonium concentrations. 4. Ammonium and nitrate uptake rates were similar at light intensities between 10% and 100% of surface light, contrasting with primary productivity which peaked between about 10 to 20% of surface light. Thus the phytoplankton population was adapted to low light conditions but remained able to utilise dissolved inorganic nitrogen over a wide range of light conditions. 5. The ammonium pool in the surface waters was relatively small compared with the phytoplankton uptake rates, and ammonium must therefore be rapidly recycled through the food web over periods of less than 1 h. Short‐term depletion may result, during which time the higher concentrations of nitrate are likely to provide a supplementary supply of nitrogen. 6. The dominance of C. raciborskii in this reservoir is more likely to be due to a superior ability to scavenge and store the low concentrations of phosphate, and a superior adaptation to the low light conditions exacerbated by artificial mixing.  相似文献

The role of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) in promoting dominance of the toxic nitrogen (N)‐fixing cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Wo?osz.) Seenayya et Subba Raju was examined in a subtropical water reservoir, Lake Samsonvale (=North Pine reservoir). A novel in situ bioassay approach, using dialysis tubing rather than bottles or bags, was used to determine the change in C. raciborskii dominance with daily additions of DIP. A statistically significant increase in dominance of C. raciborskii was observed when DIP was added at two concentrations (0.32 μM and 16 μM) in a daily pulse over a 4 d period in three separate experiments in the summer of 2006/2007. There was an increase in both C. raciborskii cell concentrations and biovolume in two DIP treatments, but not in the ammoniacal N + DIP treatment. In addition, overall phytoplankton cell concentrations increased with DIP addition, indicating that Lake Samsonvale was DIP limited at the time of experiments. Given the bioassay response, it is likely that dominance of C. raciborskii could increase in Lake Samsonvale with periodic injections of DIP such as inflow events.  相似文献

Zooplankton may at times graze cyanobacteria. However, their top-down effects are considered to be low, particularly in tropical regions dominated by small-size grazers that may be unable to consume efficiently filamentous or colonial species. Recently, cyanobacteria blooms were reported in the Senegal River hydrosystem. We conducted feeding experiments to assess the ability of copepods (Pseudodiaptomus hessei and Mesocyclops ogunnus), cladocerans (Moina micrura and Ceriodaphnia cornuta), and rotifers (Brachionus angularis, B. falcatus, and Keratella sp.) to control different cyanobacteria (Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Anabaena solitaria, A. flos-aquae, and Microcystis aeruginosa). None of the zooplankton species ingested M. aeruginosa. Mesocyclops ogunnus did not consume any of the cyanobacteria. Both cladocerans consumed the smallest filaments of cyanobacteria, whereas all the rotifers and P. hessei consumed a broader food-size spectrum. The functional feeding responses suggest that the concentration and size of the filaments are not the sole criteria for food consumption. The high zooplankton community grazing rates, estimated by applying the clearance rates measured in the laboratory to the in situ zooplankton abundance, indicate that grazing by zooplankton potentially constitutes an important controlling factor for the filamentous cyanobacteria in the tropics.  相似文献

Studies were carried out in Lake Mutek (Mazurian Lakeland) on the effect of artificial aeration and destratification upon quantitative changes in the phytoplankton. These studies were carried out from 1977 until 1983. Two different methods of aeration were used. Low intensity mixing resulted initially in a two-fold, and later on in a four-fold increase of the phytoplankton biomass. Increase of phytoplankton biomass during lake aeration was due to the development of Ceratium hirudinella. Use of a highly effective air-compressor caused an inhibition of algal development, so that biomass dropped to levels noted in the control year. It was found that the effect of aeration depended on the ratio between lake area and effectiveness of the aerator. Only intensive mixing of the water masses resulted in an inhibition of the development of algae. The effect of artificial destratification was also reflected in changes of the species structure, seasonal succession of the algae, and physiological state of the phytoplankton. Artificial circulation stimulated development of algae characterized by relatively high specific weight, i.e. most of all of Pyrrophyta, Bacillariophyceae and some species of Chlorophyta. Various aspects were discussed of the use of direct aeration as a technical method of lake restoration.  相似文献

摘要:【目的】研究三峡水库神农溪库湾春季水华期间浮游藻类演替及其成因分析。【方法】2014年3–5月在神农溪库湾布置了6个断面(SN01–SN06),在神农溪汇入长江干流河口附近水域设置1个断面CJBD,对浮游藻类、相关环境因子及水动力因子进行了同步监测,据此分析了水体层化结构及水动力特性。【结果】神农溪在监测时段内共检测到浮游藻类6门38种(属);库湾浮游藻类生物量时间上差异显著(ANOVA,P<0.05)。春季浮游藻类群落结构具有明显的演替规律,3月份暴发大面积的硅藻水华(藻密度>100×105 cells/L),小环藻(Cyclotella spp.)为优势藻种;4月在SN02–SN06暴发以小球藻(Chlorella spp.)为主要优势种、衣藻(Chlamydomonas spp.)为次优势种的绿藻水华(藻密度>100×105 cells/L),5月份受水位大幅消落影响,浮游藻类生物量降低且无明显优势藻种。【结论】在具备充足的营养盐的水体中,水体层化结构与水动力特性对浮游藻类演替影响重大。三峡水库水位处于快速消落阶段时,流速成为抑制神农溪库湾藻类生长的主要因素。  相似文献

Cylindrospermopsis (Raphidiopsis) raciborskii is an invasive, filamentous, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium that forms frequent blooms in freshwater habitats. While viruses play key roles in regulating the abundance, production and diversity of their hosts in aquatic ecosystems, the role(s) of viruses in the ecology of C. raciborskii is almost unexplored. Progress in this field has been hindered by the absence of a characterized virus–host system in C. raciborskii. To bridge this gap, we sequenced the genome of CrV-01T, a previously isolated cyanosiphovirus, and its host, C. raciborskii strain Cr2010. Analyses suggest that CrV-01T represents a distinct clade of siphoviruses infecting, and perhaps lysogenizing, filamentous cyanobacteria. Its genome contains unique features that include an intact CRISPR array and a 12 kb inverted duplication. Evidence suggests CrV-01T recently gained the ability to infect Cr2010 and recently lost the ability to form lysogens. The cyanobacterial host contains a CRISPR-Cas system with CRISPR spacers matching protospacers within the inverted duplication of the CrV-01T genome. Examination of metagenomes demonstrates that viruses with high genetic identity to CrV-01T, but lacking the inverted duplication, are present in C. raciborskii blooms in Australia. The unique genomic features of the CrV/Cr2010 system offers opportunities to investigate in more detail virus–host interactions in an ecologically important bloom-forming cyanobacterium.  相似文献

于2004年调查了广东省飞来峡和深圳两座直流型水库的蓝藻季节分布特征。共检到蓝藻17属,绝大多数为丝状体种类。常见属有假鱼腥藻(Pseudanabaena)、微囊藻(Microcystis)和蓝纤维藻(Dactylococcopsis)。蓝藻细胞密度为5-2052个细胞ml-1。深圳水库最高蓝藻细胞密度出现在6月,其中丝状蓝藻的相对丰度在75%以上;飞来峡水库最高蓝藻细胞密度出现在12月,丝状蓝藻的相对丰度达到90%。水动力学条件是限制蓝藻丰度和种类的主要环境因子。由于飞来峡水库的水力滞留时间变化较大,所以蓝藻季节性变化受水动力学条件的影响比深圳水库的大。假鱼腥藻等丝状蓝藻更适合在水库中生长,特别是在氮磷营养水平较高,水力滞留时间明显增加时,其细胞密度将大幅度上升。  相似文献

Field and experimental studies were conducted to evaluate the combined impacts of cyanobacterial blooms and small algae on seasonal and long-term changes in the abundance and community structure of crustacean zooplankton in a large, eutrophic, Chinese lake, Lake Chaohu. Seasonal changes of the crustacean zooplankton from 22 sampling stations were investigated during September 2002 and August 2003, and 23 species belonging to 20 genera were recorded. Daphnia spp. dominated in spring but disappeared in mid-summer, while Bosmina coregoni and Ceriodaphnia cornuta dominated in summer and autumn. Both maximum cladoceran density (310 ind. l−1) and biomass (5.2 mg l−1) appeared in autumn. Limnoithona sinensis, Sinocalanus dorrii and Schmackeria inopinus were the main species of copepods. Microcystis spp. were the dominant phytoplankton species and formed dense blooms in the warm seasons. In the laboratory, inhibitory effects of small colonial Microcystis on growth and reproduction of Daphnia carinata were more remarkable than those of large ones, and population size of D. carinata was negatively correlated with density of fresh large colonial Microcystis within a density range of 0–100 mg l−1 (r = −0.82, P< 0.05). Both field and experimental results suggested that seasonal and long-term changes in the community structure of crustacean zooplankton in the lake were shaped by cyanobacterial blooms and biomass of the small algae, respectively, i.e., colonial and filamentous cyanobacteria contributed to the summer replacement of dominant crustacean zooplankton from large Daphnia spp. to small B. coregoni and C. cornuta, while increased small algae might be responsible for the increased abundance of crustacean zooplankton during the past decades.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic photosynthetic microorganisms that pose a serious threat to aquatic environments because they are able to form blooms under eutrophic conditions and produce toxins. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is a planktonic heterocystous filamentous cyanobacterium initially assigned to the tropics but currently being found in more temperate regions such as Portugal, the southernmost record for this species in Europe. Cylindrospermopsin originally isolated from C. raciborskii is a cytotoxic alkaloid that affects the liver, kidney, and other organs. It has a great environmental impact associated with cattle mortality and human morbidity. Aiming in monitoring this cyanobacterium and its related toxin, a shallow pond located in the littoral center of Portugal, Vela Lake, used for agriculture and recreational purposes was monitored for a 2-year period. To accomplish this, we used the real-time PCR methodology in field samples to quantify the variation of specific genetic markers with primers previously described characterizing total cyanobacteria (16S rRNA), C. raciborskii (rpoC1), and cylindrospermopsin synthetase gene (pks). The results report the high abundance of both cyanobacteria and C. raciborskii in Vela Lake, with C. raciborskii representing 0.4% to 58% of the total cyanobacteria population. Cylindrospermopsin synthetase gene was detected in one of the samples. We believe that with the approach developed in this study, it will be possible to monitor C. raciborskii population dynamics and seasonal variation, as well as the potential toxin production in other aquatic environments.  相似文献

The effect of toxic and of filamentous blue-green algae on feeding and population growth of the rotifer Brachionus rubens was investigated in laboratory experiments. A toxic strain of Microcystis aeruginosa was ingested, but rotifers cultured with Microcystis died faster than nonfed controls. The rigid filaments of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii were not ingested, reduced the ingestion of simultaneously offered algae, and depressed population growth rates. The soft filaments of Anabaena flos-aquae were ingested at a moderate rate, did not reduce ingestion of other algae, and were used as an additional food in population growth experiments.  相似文献

Microstratification of phytoplankton in the large shallow Lake Balaton (Hungary) was studied during a 24 h period. Dissolved O2 showed biological stratification; flagellates exhibited a definite circadian rhythm. In the middle of the investigation a heavy storm broke out which was followed by the disappearance of differences between different layers of water. Storm-induced destratification is described by cluster-analysis. Abundances of dominant species changed differently in connection with the storm. Numbers of Nitzschia sp. increased due to stirring up from the sediment surface. Numbers of single-celled or colony-forming species (Cyclotella comta, Crucigenia quadrata, Coelosphaerium kuetzingianum) practically did not change. Numbers of all the three dominant filamentous species (Aphanizomenon fos-aquae f. klebahnii, Lyngbya limnetica, Planctonema lauterbornii) significantly decreased, which might be attributed to an unknown loss process and was followed by a competitive displacement by algae of small cell size.  相似文献

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Wo?osz.) Seenayya et Subba Raju is a planktonic filamentous cyanobacterium whose sudden worldwide proliferation and ability to produce toxins are a reason for concern. In this paper, we suggest that its ecological dominance might be explained by antagonistic interaction with other phytoplankton species due to production of allelopathic metabolites. To test this hypothesis, experiments were run with exudates of natural phytoplankton and C. raciborskii strains isolated from Lagoa Santa, a small natural lake in southeastern Brazil, where this species has become dominant in recent years. The exudates were added to different algal species obtained from the same environment and maintained in culture. After 24 h incubation, PAM fluorometry was used to compare control and treatment photosynthetic responses (relative electron transport rate) to the dissolved extracellular products. Results indicate that most of the target species were sensitive to C. raciborskii exudates, which showed strong inhibitory effects on their photosynthetic activities. These results provide evidence that allelopathy may offer a competitive benefit to C. raciborskii and contribute to its stable dominance in Lagoa Santa. A potential allelopathic advantage could also help to explain the geographic expansion of this species at midlatitudes.  相似文献

Recruitment is an important process in regulating many marine benthic communities and many studies have examined factors controlling the dispersal and distribution of larval immigrants. However, benthic species also have early post-settlement life-stages that are dramatically different from adult and larval stages. Predation on these stages potentially impacts measured recruitment and the benthic populations and communities that ultimately develop.We examined the consequences of post-settlement predation on 1-day-old to 1-month-old recruits of sessile invertebrates at two field sites in southern New England. One site (Breakwater) was in a protected area with few predators and the other (Pine Island) was <1 km away in an open coast area with three different predator guilds: small and large invertebrates and fish. The Breakwater site had been dominated for >10 years by colonial and solitary ascidians. These species were absent from the Pine Island site which was dominated by bryozoans. Our goal was to examine whether post-settlement predation influenced the development and subsequent structure of the epifaunal community.Here we examine long-term changes in community development resulting from post-settlement predation, and contrast these results to those of earlier experiments examining the reductions in observed recruitment by post-settlement predation. Our first long-term experiment examined natural community development at the two sites and whether transplanted communities changed when exposed to the different levels of predation at these sites. The communities that developed at both sites were consistently different from each other and similar to resident communities at their respective sites. On panels transplanted from the Breakwater to Pine Island, solitary ascidians and the colonial ascidian, Botryllus schlosseri, suffered high mortalities on both caged and uncaged treatments, indicative of predation by small predators that could enter cages. Some solitary ascidians did survive inside cages and the colonial ascidian, Botrylloides violaceus, became dominant on all transplanted treatments. On panels transplanted from Pine Island to the Breakwater, ascidians invaded and dominated all treatments except those that were originally caged at Pine Island.In the second long-term experiment, natural communities were allowed to develop on panels exposed at the Breakwater for 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. Each set was transplanted to three treatments at Pine Island: open uncaged pilings, caged pilings to exclude fish and large invertebrates, and racks suspended above the bottom to exclude all predators. When 1-week-old communities were transplanted, after 2-3 weeks only bryozoans were found on the open and caged pilings, while colonial ascidians dominated the suspended rack treatment. When older 2-week-old communities were transplanted, colonial ascidians also became dominant in the caged piling treatment and when 3- and 4-week-old communities were transplanted colonial ascidians dominated all three treatments. Solitary ascidians were never abundant on open pilings exposed to fish and large benthic invertebrate predators.Post-settlement predator-prey interactions involved newly settled and juvenile life-stages of a variety of prey species and many invertebrate and vertebrate predator species. The effects of these interactions on recruitment did result in differences in the development and eventual species composition of the communities, even though predators had little if any effect on the adults of the prey species.  相似文献

We assessed the relationships among native and introduced fish species richness and a set of explanatory variables, including area, altitude, reservoir age, temperature, human influence index and fish abundance. We expected to find different relationships based on species origin (i.e., native or introduced). Based on compiled data from Brazilian reservoirs, we modeled the variation in the number of native and introduced fish species by generalized linear mixed models with different spatial autocorrelation structures. Reservoirs located in warmer regions and with higher fish abundance showed higher species richness of both native and introduced fish. Reservoir age tended to be negatively correlated with native species richness. Our results suggest that reservoir communities in warmer regions may be more resistant to local extinctions caused by impoundments, but they are more susceptible to species introductions. Our results also highlight that an extinction debt can be expected for native species because older reservoirs showed lower native species richness.  相似文献

We examined the impacts of three facultative planktivorous fishes, Congo tilapia (Tilapia rendalli), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), and an obligate planktivorous fish, silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) on plankton community and water quality of a tropical eutrophic reservoir, Paranoá Reservoir, Brasília, Brazil, conducting both laboratory selective grazing experiments and an enclosure experiment. The first two species inhabit this reservoir and the remaining two are recommended for introduction. The field experiment was performed in ten limnocorrals (2 m3 each) and lasted five weeks. During the enclosure experiment, silver carp suppressed copepod nauplii, cladocerans and rotifers while the presence of tilapia and bluegill were associated with increased rotifers density. The dominant blue-green algae,Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (98% of phytoplankton biomass) was enhanced in the presence of bluegill, tilapia and tambaqui, but reduced in the presence of silver carp. This impact on plankton is in agreement with the results of the laboratory feeding trials. The observed alterations in water quality parameters in fish limnocorrals are discussed in relation to plankton community and eutrophication of this ecosystem. It is suggested that the control of the undesirable algaeC. raciborskii directly by silver carp grazing is a promising management tool.  相似文献

1. The tiny non‐motile autotrophic picoplankton (APP; size range 0.2–2 μm) occur in all types of aquatic habitats and are comprised of prokaryotic as well as eukaryotic taxa. In the Boreal Zone, the majority of lakes have high concentrations of coloured humic substances that can adversely affect lake light climate and cause steep summertime stratification resulting in epilimnetic nutrient depletion. APP are more effective in nutrient and light acquisition than larger phytoplankton and thus should be competitive in humic lakes. 2. Most lacustrine APP studies have been based on short sampling periods, and thus, interannual variation and its drivers are still unclear. We studied APP in the small, boreal, humic Lake Valkea‐Kotinen during five open‐water periods in 2002–06 to determine interannual variation and the importance of meteorological drivers for APP dynamics. 3. Total APP showed a bimodal annual pattern, but the timing and vertical location of the two maxima varied during the study. In general, APP thrived in warm water and the most important abiotic factor controlling APP was stability of the water column (Ns). On average, 82% of APP were found in the epilimnion or metalimnion during summertime stratification. 4. There was niche separation of APP and larger phytoplankton in the lake because, with only one exception, APP maxima occurred separately from the maxima of larger phytoplankton. 5. Two groups, solitary eukaryotic APP and colonial picocyanobacteria (Merismopedia warmingiana), responded differently to the abiotic factors. Solitary APP preferred high water colour and low pH, both of which occurred after heavy rain, whereas colonial APP did not fare well when water colour was high. Our findings suggest that when future climate change‐related processes increase incoming allocthonous organic matter load from the catchment, solitary eukaryotic APP will be favoured.  相似文献

The zooplankton of 18 reservoirs of South China was investigated in 2000. 61 Rotifera species, 23 Cladoceras and 14 Copepodas were identified. The most frequent Rotifera genera were Keratella, Brachionus, Trichocerca, Diurella, Ascomorpha, Polyarthra, Ploesoma, Asplanchna, Pompholyx and Conochilus. Bosmina longirostris, Bosminopsis deitersi, Diaphanosoma birgei, D. brachyurum and Moina micrura were typical of Cladocera in the reservoirs. Phyllodiaptomus tunguidus, Neodiaptomus schmackeri and Mesocyclops leuckarti were the most frequent Copepoda and M. leuckarti dominated Copepoda in most reservoirs. High zooplankton species richness with low abundance was characteristic of the throughflowing reservoir, whereas low species richness with low abundance was found in the reservoir with the longest retention time. Relative high abundance and medium species diversity were the distinction of intermediate retention time reservoirs.  相似文献

Exotic cladoceran Daphnia lumholtzi is a highly invasive species in the north and south American continents and can potentially also invade European freshwaters and outcompete native Daphnia populations. However, European waterbodies are frequently dominated by less edible filamentous cyanobacteria including also invaders such as Raphidiopsis raciborskii, which might affect the fitness of D. lumholtzi. Furthermore, temperature may influence the sensitivity of D. lumholtzi to R. raciborskii filaments.
  2. In this study, we determined whether the presence of R. raciborskii could obstruct the invasion of Europe by D. lumholtzi, through reducing its fitness, and whether this depends on temperature. We compared the population growth rate (r) and the somatic growth rate of D. lumholtzi maintained at two temperatures (20 or 26°C) and fed with two diets: green microalgae alone or green microalgae mixed with filaments of R. raciborskii. Three clones of D. lumholtzi were used to evaluate potential variation in response to the treatments among different clones.
  3. At 20°C, the population growth rate of D. lumholtzi fed with cyanobacterial filaments declined sharply. This reduction was caused by increased egg abortion, egg degeneration, and mortality of newborn daphnids. At 26°C, R. raciborskii lost its harmful effect on the population growth of D. lumholtzi. The presence of cyanobacteria did reduce the somatic growth rate of D. lumholtzi at both temperatures and in all three clones except for one that had a similar somatic growth rate on both diets at 26°C.
  4. The presence of filamentous cyanobacteria does affect growth in D. lumholtzi and may thereby substantially reduce its invasive potential, but only at lower temperatures. Therefore, the presence of filamentous cyanobacteria may not present an obstacle to the invasion of Europe by D. lumholtzi in a warmer future climate.

This paper describes results of partial destratification of a large reservoir with complex morphology. In order to reduce phytoplankton growth by light limitation, the upper 20 m of the water column were destratified in the Bleiloch Reservoir (Thuringia, Germany). Temperatures, phytoplankton, and zooplankton were investigated before and during aeration to determine the effects of the partial destratification on plankton. The measure induced an increase of phytoplankton dynamics. Since 1991 nuisance cyanobacteria blooms increased in the hypertrophic Bleiloch reservoir (Thuringia, Federal Republic of Germany), as light conditions improved due to a reduction of coloured wastewaters supplied by a cellulose mill. Warm inflowing water formed an upper layer, which reached the bubble plume near the dam, and was only weakly affected by the deeper mixed water body. The water column stability decreased, which caused an overturn 2–3 weeks earlier, because the hypolimnion warmed up faster. These physical effects of the destratification delayed the seasonal succession of phytoplankton. Cyanobacteria were suppressed but diatoms and chlorophytes became more abundant. Copepods maintained higher population densities throughout the summer. During artificial mixing, the algal diversity increased, not only because k-strategists selected a stratified water column, but also because episodic thermal instability enabled r- and k-strategists to co-exist in a competitive environment.  相似文献
