Three experiments were designed to test the effects of food deprivation during various phases of the reproductive cycle on fertility and fecundity of the dams and on the age of sexual maturation and body growth of their female progeny. Food deprivation consisted of removal of all food every other day. Animals were deprived of food either during the period prior to pairing, during the period between pairing and conception or during gestation. Both fertility and fecundity were affected by food deprivation in some, but not all manipulations. The female progeny of food-deprived females reached puberty significantly later than the progeny of non-deprived dams when the food deprivation occurred during the week prior to pairing and up until successful insemination after pairing with a fertile male, but not when food deprivation occurred at other times during the reproductive cycle. Body growth did not differ in the daughters of food-deprived dams across the treatments for any of the experiments.  相似文献

Primiparous, post-partum mated BALB/c bom inbred mice were allowed to raise litters of 6 young until Day 22 of lactation: 11 of 25 females were restricted to 60% of food consumption of ad-libitum fed dams after stud male removal at Day 2 of lactation. Since weight gain of restricted females during lactation was not inhibited and infanticidal behaviour was not enhanced, food deprivation can be considered to have been relatively mild. However, none of the food-restricted dams gave birth to a second litter whereas 12 of the 14 ad-libitum fed mice littered. This pregnancy failure is suggested to be due to implantation failure or abortion shortly after implantation, which is attributed to maternal manipulation rather than to immediate consequences of energetic demands of lactated young. The dynamics of the weight changes of dams and young suggest that milk production in suckling house mice drops most markedly between Days 17 and 18 of lactation, irrespective of whether the dams are non-pregnant, pregnant, or food-restricted.  相似文献

Hypothyroidism in bitches has been reported to cause a variable interestrus interval, infertility, abortion, and stillbirth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of experimentally induced hypothyroidism in bitches on fertility, pregnancy, parturition, and neonatal health. Eighteen healthy multiparous bitches were used; hypothyroidism was induced (by radioiodine administration) in nine bitches and the remaining nine served as untreated controls. After breeding, bitches were evaluated for pregnancy, fetal resorption, gestation length, litter size, duration and strength of uterine contractions (during parturition), interval between delivery of pups, viability of pups at birth, periparturient survival, and weight of pups at birth through 4 weeks of age. Bitches were bred a median of 19 weeks after induction of hypothyroidism. All bitches became pregnant and delivered term litters. There was no difference in the interestrus interval, litter size, or gestation length between hypothyroid and control bitches. Duration of uterine contractions was longer, but contraction strength was weaker in hypothyroid than control bitches; however, the interval between delivery of pups was not affected. Periparturient puppy mortality was significantly higher in litters from hypothyroid bitches. Viability scores and weight at birth were significantly lower in pups from hypothyroid bitches than controls. There was no difference between groups in pup weight gain during the first 4 weeks, in the interval from birth to the eyes opened, or to the onset of walking. Although hypothyroidism of relatively short duration did not affect fertility, it prolonged parturition and reduced pup survival in the periparturient period.  相似文献

The effect of food deprivation on the pulsatile release of LH was examined in the normal cycling and the ovariectomized (OVX) adult female rat. In the cycling animals, there were significant decreases in the mean plasma LH levels as well as the frequency and amplitude of the LH pulse 48 h after the onset of food deprivation. On the other hand, food deprivation for up to 72 h did not cause any changes in pulsatile LH release in the OVX animals. No difference in the changes in body weight and blood glucose concentration were found between the cycling and OVX rats throughout the period of food deprivation for up to 96 h. These findings suggest that ovarian factors play an important role in the early manifestation of the effect of food deprivation on pulsatile LH release and that metabolic changes as expressed by decreases in body weight and blood glucose level per se were not the direct causes in the decrease of LH release during the period of food deprivation.  相似文献

The effects of food and water deprivation on survival and reproduction of adult female German cockroaches were examined. Females, maintained under constant conditions, were deprived of food or water following adult maturation, mating, during the oothecal incubation period, and after first oothecal hatch. It was found that both food and water deprivations caused increased mortality, delays in the reproductive cycle and decreased oothecal hatch. The relative importance of food vs. water deprivation on reproduction is discussed along with possible reproductive strategies for this species.
Résumé Les femelles, maintenues en conditions constantes, ont été privées d'aliments et d'eau après la maturité imaginale, l'accouplement, pendant la période d'incubation et après l'éclosion de la première oothèque. On a observé une mortalité accure, un retard dans le cycle de reproduction et une diminution des éclosions de l'oothèque. L'importance relative de l'alimentation par rapport au jeûne hydrique sur la reproduction est discutée en relation avec les stratégies reproductives possibles de cette espèce.

Juvenile three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus were fed live enchytraeid worms, and mean daily ad libitum consumption in the absence of periods of deprivation was 11·7% of initial body weight. Then, six groups of five replicate fish were subjected to 1, 3 and 6 days without food. Each period of deprivation was followed by 1 day of ad libitum feeding. The sequential order of deprivations differed between groups. Over the sequence of deprivations and re-feedings, mean cumulative consumption did not differ between groups. Mean daily consumption was 19·8% of initial body weight after a 1-day deprivation, 22·3% after 3 days and 19·5% after 6 days. However, consumption in the 24 h after a given length of deprivation also depended on the prior history of deprivation. Specific growth rate over the experiment did not differ between groups. The results provide evidence for an effective regulation of appetite in growing sticklebacks.  相似文献

为确定米非司酮抑制害鼠繁殖的效力及适宜剂量,每2 周对雌鼠灌服不同剂量的米非司酮1 次,检测给药期间和停药后小鼠繁殖及幼鼠的生长状况。结果发现,给药期间米非司酮抑制小鼠繁殖效果存在一定的量效关系。按体重小于1.25 mg/ kg 剂量的米非司酮对小鼠繁殖无显著抑制作用;2.5 mg/ kg 以上剂量能降低小鼠的产仔率;5 mg / kg 剂量能显著降低产仔率和胎仔数;10 mg / kg 以上剂量能使小鼠完全不育。停药后雌鼠繁殖能力的恢复与之前用药剂量负相关,给药组第一胎平均胎仔数仍显著少于对照组,且第一胎分娩时间也被延迟;至第二胎时平均胎仔数趋于恢复。该结果表明多次给予米非司酮能够有效抑制雌鼠繁殖,停药后仍有一定的持效期,因此具有作为害鼠不育剂的良好潜力。  相似文献

Naloxone (4 mg/kg) or saline was administered to animals under food deprived and non-deprived conditions prior to testing pain sensitivity in the tail flick test. Food deprived animals exhibited significantly elevated latencies in comparison to latencies observed under non-deprived conditions. This analgesia was diminished by treatment with the opiate receptor antagonist, naloxone. These findings suggest that analgesia induced by food deprivation is mediated in part by opiate receptor systems.  相似文献

1. Mass at emergence is a life-history trait strongly linked to adult fitness. Therefore, when faced with transient food shortage in the larval stage, mass-correcting mechanisms are common. 2. These correcting mechanisms may carry costs with them. On one hand, these costs may be overestimated because they can be confounded with the direct effects of the transient food shortage itself. On the other hand, costs may be underestimated by ignoring physiological costs. Another largely neglected topic is that correcting mechanisms and costs may critically depend upon other stressors that often co-occur. 3. Here, we identify the mass-correcting mechanisms and their associated costs at emergence in the damselfly Coenagrion puella, after being stressed by a transient period of starvation and a subsequent exposure to pesticide stress during the larval stage. We introduce path analysis to disentangle direct costs of starvation and the mass-correcting mechanisms in terms of immune response. 4. As predicted, we found no differences in mass at emergence. Starvation directly resulted in a costly delayed emergence and a decreased immune response at emergence. Mass-correcting mechanisms included a prolonged post-starvation period, reduced mass loss at emergence and compensatory growth, although the latter only in females under pesticide stress. 5. The mass-correcting mechanisms were associated with beneficial effects on investment in immune response, but only in the absence of pesticide stress. Under pesticide stress, these beneficial effects were mostly undone or overruled, resulting in negative effects of the mass-correcting mechanisms in terms of immune response. 6. Our results stress the importance of and introduce a statistical way of disentangling direct costs of starvation and the mass-correcting mechanisms themselves, and the importance of including physiological endpoints in this kind of studies.  相似文献

Pouched mice were kept under controlled conditions of illumination (10D:14L) and temperature (22 +/- 2 degrees C). Age at vaginal opening, first oestrus and first conception did not differ significantly between juvenile females raised singly, in single-sex groups of 5, or with an adult male. After the introduction of a male, sterile cycles and/or matings before first conception were experienced by all females whether they were raised singly or in single-sex groups. Of 10 females raised with a male, 4 conceived at their first mating. Onset of puberty in juvenile females raised with an adult female was delayed, while in juvenile females raised with their families (mother, father and litter mates) only vaginal opening was delayed. However, when raised in family groups without the father, vaginal opening as well as first oestrus were delayed. Grouping of females after weaning, with or without a male, did not change the oestrous cycle pattern. Females in these groups cycled independently of each other and the females grouped with a male also mated and conceived independently of each other. Pregnancy was blocked in 7 of 8 females when the stud male was removed and a strange male was introduced. In females exposed to a succession of males, pregnancy was blocked up to 4 times.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of nutritional state on carbohydrate, lipid, and protein stores in the heart, liver, and white skeletal muscle of male and female rainbow trout. For fed animals we also partitioned glycogen into fractions based on acid solubility. Fish (10-14 months-old, ~400-500 g) were held at 14 °C and either fed (1% of body weight, every other day) or deprived of food for 14 days. Under fed conditions, glycogen was increased 54% in ventricles from males compared with females, and elevated in the liver (87%) and white muscle (70%) in sexually-maturing versus immature males. Acid soluble glycogen predominated over the acid insoluble fraction in all tissues and was similar between sexes. Food deprivation 1) selectively reduced glycogen and free glucose in male ventricles by ~30%, and 2) did not change glycogen in the liver or white muscle, or triglyceride, protein or water levels in any tissues for both sexes. These data highlight sex differences in teleost cardiac stores and the metabolism of carbohydrates, and contrast with mammals where cardiac glycogen increases during fasting and acid insoluble glycogen is a significant fraction. Increased glycogen in the hearts of male rainbow trout appears to pre-empt sex-specific cardiac growth while storage of acid soluble glycogen may reflect a novel strategy for efficient synthesis and mobilization of glycogen in fishes.  相似文献

Although it has been known for more than 50 years that zinc (Zn) deficiency regularly and consistently causes anorexia in many animal species, the basic mechanism(s) that cause this phenomenon still remain(s) an enigma. The following studies describe feeding behavior in the early stages of zinc deficiency in the rat model. In one experiment, we used computerized feeding monitors that measured the intake of individual rats at 10-min intervals over 24-hr periods. Male rats were acclimated to the cages and fed a Zn-adequate egg-white-based diet, or a similar diet with <1.0 mg Zn/kg. Food intake was monitored for seven, consecutive 24-hr periods. The 24-hr food intake pattern of the Zn-deprived rats did not differ from the controls; they simply ate less food, mainly during the night hours, with no differences between groups during the day. Although Zn-deprived rats ate less food than controls, the percentage of total diet consumed during night and day did not differ between groups. In another experiment, we simultaneously offered male rats three isocaloric diets with different macronutrient compositions and with or without adequate Zn, and measured the amount of each diet selected during seven, 24-hr periods. The three diets contained either 57% protein from egg white, 30% fat from soybean oil, or 80% carbohydrate from a combination of starch, hydrolyzed starch, and sucrose. For the first four days on experiment, rats selected similar amounts of each diet. Then the Zn-deprived rats began to select only 50% as much of the protein diet as the controls. Similar results were obtained when the data were expressed on the basis of each macronutrient as a percentage of the total diet selected. Zn-deprived rats selected a diet that contained 8% protein, 73% carbohydrate, and 6% fat while the Zn-adequate rats selected 12% protein, 69% carbohydrate, and 6% fat. Fat intake was not affected by Zn-deprivation. The results confirm our previous findings, and are discussed in terms of Zn-deprivation blunting the pathways of signal transduction that involve the peptide hormones known to affect food intake regulation.  相似文献

Food availability affects the trade-off between maintenance and reproduction in a wide range of organisms, but its effects on social insects remain poorly understood. In social insects, the maintenance-reproduction trade-off seems to be absent in individuals but may appear at the colony level, although this is rarely investigated. In this study, we restricted food availability in a termite species to test how it affects survival and reproduction, both at the individual and colony level. Using Bayesian multivariate response models, we found very minor effects of food restriction on the survival of queens, individual workers or on the colonies. In contrast, queen fecundity was significantly reduced, whereas colony-level fecundity (i.e., the number of dispersing alates, future reproductives) increased under food restriction as workers gave up cooperation within the colony and became alates that dispersed. Our study shows that life-history trade-offs can be mitigated by individuals' social behaviours in social organisms.  相似文献

Effects of restriction in daily feeding periods (2, 4, 8 and 12 hrs) imposed in 21 days old rats for 9 weeks were studied on the food intake, body growth, onset of puberty, reproductive cyclicity and ovarian functions. Control rats were feeding for 24 hrs ad lib. Though the restriction in feeding periods had no effect on the daily food intake but body growth was significantly reduced. Restricted feeding for 2, 4 and 8 hrs daily resulted in the delay in the onset of puberty, inhibition of oestrous cyclicity, reduction in ovarian weights, reduced growth, increased atresia of antral follicles and cessation of ovulation. The rats fed for 12 hrs daily, though weighed less but exhibited all the above mentioned reproductive functions similar to those of controls. The results have revealed that the restriction in feeding time induces nutritional deficiency, causing delay in sexual maturation and inhibition of ovarian functions.  相似文献
