Fish is a very important part of the human diet in Amazonia. Near the growing cities, fish populations and individual size have decreased over the past decades. Alternatives to traditional and industrial fishing arise, including fish farming. Strategies to minimize the impact of fish farms on the environment are needed to have a regular and healthy fish supply. This is to avoid a reduction of biodiversity, a depletion of natural resources, and/or the induction of significant changes in the structure and functioning of adjacent ecosystems. Very little research has been performed on management of effluents as to maintain the quality of water resources. The present study aimed at testing the efficiency of the Amazonian aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes as a biofilter for the treatment of effluents from fish farming. In three filtering treatments (50%, 75% and 100% plant cover) and a control (0%), physical and chemical properties of the water were measured and analyzed in a nursery with fish after passing the biofilter system, with a hydraulic retention time of 24 hours. The analyzed variables showed no significant differences (p>0.05) among the treatments with 50-100% cover, indicating that 50% cover would be enough for a good efficiency of the biofilter. All parameters were reduced after passage of the biofilter under the presence of E. crassipes: 73.7% for electrical conductivity, 15% for pH, 84.5% for turbidity, 86.8% for nitrite, 69% for total phosphorus, and 77.8% for orthophosphate. The concentrations of total nitrogen, nitrate and ammonium ions were not significantly changed (p>0.05). We conclude that E. crassipes is effective in improving the quality of effluents from fish farming, with less efficiency for nitrogen compounds. Our treatment system can be adopted by small and medium-sized farmers, aiming at a sustainable employment of the activity.  相似文献

The degree of conflict between otter conservation and fish farming was assessed at Sado estuary (SW Portugal), using ecological (otter visiting rates to fish farms and consumption of commercial fish) and socio-economic (past and current instruments and policies addressing the conflict and a social impact assessment, including a discourse analysis of relevant stakeholders) parameters. The study concerned 14 fish farms producing Sparus aurata, Dicentrarchus labrax, Solea senegalensis and Solea solea. Results indicate high visiting rates in most fish farms (average: 76%), although in only 29%, species stocked were the most consumed prey. Other marine species and freshwater prey were the basis of otter diet in the remaining fish farms. The conflict is quite consensual among most fish farmers, and the results indicate that the perceived conflict by fish farmers has an ecological basis, although there are large gaps between effective and perceived predation. No specific instruments exist in Portugal to address the conflict, but some not specifically targeted can have an effect (e.g. species protection legislation and aquaculture licensing), although with limitations to effectively contribute to its mitigation (e.g. lack of enforcement and supervision). Formulating and assessing solutions is the following step, using a participatory approach to the development and evaluation of mitigation/compensation strategies, capable of providing an effective reconciliation of the conflict.

The objective of this work was to assess the feasibility of a fixed-film biological aerated filtration process for the treatment of the leachate produced at Harnhill landfill site (South Gloucestershire, UK). The laboratory scale plant consisted of four identical biological aerated filters (a triplicate and a “control” column) packed with small brick fragments. Biofilm formed within 24 h of immersion of the support material in the reactor, and had a high resistance to antibiotics and other toxic agents. The plant maintained a stable operation in the 20–45 °C temperature range, showing the best results (35.4 ± 6.6% COD removal and 73.9 ± 5.5% BOD5 reduction) at 40 °C. The lowest COD and BOD5 values obtained at the outlet of the columns were 7067 mg/L and 1050 mg/L, respectively.  相似文献

Mass fish mortality occurred in November 2006 in a water hole in the Great Ruaha River, Ruaha National Park, and was due to the lack of shade by riparian vegetation or fringing wetlands. Nearby water holes with shade or fringing wetlands suffered no fish mortality. Despite being vulnerable to intense birds’ predation, fish stayed in the top few centimeters due to hypoxia in deeper water.  相似文献

The effect of restoring connectivity for fish by the construction of 11 fish ladders in the Pielach and Melk rivers, both tributaries to the Danube in Austria, was monitored using electric fishing and fish traps between 1999 and 2004. In order to assess the efficiency of connectivity rehabilitation measures pre- and post-project data combining electric fishing and trap catch data were analyzed by means of three fish-based assessment methods: a MUlti-Level concept for a Fish-based, river-type-specific Assessment of ecological integrity (MULFA), the Fish Index Austria (FIA) and the European Fish Index (EFI). The effect of adding qualitative trap catch data to electric fishing data on metrics and indices was also tested and the magnitude of the effect was related to the distance of the sites from the river mouth. The results clearly demonstrated the significant contribution of connectivity rehabilitation measures to the ecological integrity of rivers like the River Pielach where morphological conditions are good, whereas remaining channelization still limits the success of connectivity measures in the River Melk. Trap catch data were found to represent an essential source of additional information to assess the efficiency of connectivity measures shortly after their implementation. The negative correlations of the magnitude of the effect of different indices and metrics with the distance of assessment sites from river mouths obviously underline the importance of the river Danube as a source for the re-colonization process. While the indices tested were found to have limited ability to reflect short-term response of fish assemblages to continuum rehabilitation, guild metrics were able to detect improvements of the ecological status shortly after the implementation of connectivity measures. Six metrics showed significant differences between pre and post-project data reflecting the expected increase of the ecological integrity: (1) Fish Region Index (FRI; FIA, MULFA), (2) number of subdominant species and (3) number of flow-guilds (FIA), (4) number of type specific species (MULFA), (5) number of benthic species and (6) number of potamodromous species (EFI); the FRI differences were only significant when trap catch data were added. The EFI indicated a decline of ecological integrity through increases in the density of omnivorous species and the relative number of tolerant species as well as a decrease in the relative number of intolerant species. Significantly decreasing responses with the distance from the river mouth were documented by the EFI and MULFA-index, the FRI (FIA, MULFA), total biomass and for the number of type specific species (MULFA). Large scale irrigation schemes are vitally important for food security in developing countries. This is especially relevant in subtropical countries where there is pressure on their water resources. However, the potential impacts on the fish communities of the rivers associated with these irrigation systems are extensive and potentially devastating. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme (VHIS) on the fish community of two rivers (Harts and Vaal rivers) in the subtropical region of South Africa. The fish community was assessed during a three year period from 2007 to 2009 together with environmental and habitat quality parameters. A multivariate approach together with a local biotic index was used to determine the present ecological state and the environmental drivers responsible for the fish community structure. The results indicated that the fish community was in a largely natural state at the start of the VHIS and increasingly became modified due to various environmental parameters being affected by the irrigation scheme. Annual variation in the fish community structures was high while nitrate, zinc and sulphates corresponded with changes in the fish community. The outcome of the study highlighted that a lack of long term monitoring of fish community structures together with environmental and habitat parameters are a major challenge in many developing countries that can potentially affect management of irrigation schemes and the fish communities associated with the aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The Southern Plateau subantarctic region, southeast of New Zealand, is an important feeding area for birds, seals and fish, and a fishing ground for commercially significant species. The Southern Plateau is a major morphometric feature, covering approximately 433,620 km2 with average depth of 615 m. The region is noted for its relatively low levels of phytoplankton biomass and primary production that is iron-limited. In order to evaluate the implications of these attributes for the functioning of this ecosystem a steady-state, 19-compartment model was constructed using Ecopath with Ecosim software of Christensen et al. [www.ecopath.org]. The system is driven by primary production that is primarily governed by the supply of iron and light. The total system biomass of 6.28 g C m−2 is very low compared with systems so far modelled with a total system throughput of 1136 g C m−2 year−1. In the model, the Southern Plateau retains 69% of the biomass in the pelagic system and 99% of total production. Although fish are caught demersally, most of their food is part of production in the pelagic system. Top predators represent about 0.3% of total biomass and account for about 0.24 g C m−2 year−1 of food consumed made up of birds 0.058 g C m−2 year−1, seals 0.041 g C m−2 year−1, and toothed 0.094 g C m−2 year−1 and baleen whales 0.051 g C m−2 year−1. This amounts to 105,803 tonnes carbon over the whole of the Southern Plateau and is about 17% of the total amount of food eaten by non-mesopelagic fish. Mean transfer efficiencies between trophic levels II and IV of 23% are at the high end of the range reported in the literature. In the model, adult fish production is almost completely accounted for by the fisheries take (32%), consumption by seals (7%), toothed whales (21%), other adult fish (13%), and squid (20%). Fish and squid catches are at the trophic levels of 4.8 and 5.0, respectively. The gross efficiency of the fishery is 0.018% (catch/primary production). Although not all data come from direct knowledge of this system, the model reflects its general characteristics, namely a low primary production system dominated by the microbial loop, low sedimentation to the seafloor, high transfer efficiencies, a long food web and supporting high-level predators.  相似文献

The increased resistance of fish pathogens to conventional treatments has lead researchers to investigate the antibacterial properties of natural resources, such as essential oils (EOs) of plants, in an effort to find products that are less harmful to the environment. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the studies, in vivo and in vitro, that addressed the use of EOs and their major compounds as antimicrobial agents in fish, to identify the best EOs and compounds to investigate considering feasibility of application and suggest possible future studies. To date, studies suggest that the use of EOs in the prevention and/or treatment of infectious diseases in fish may be a promising strategy to reduce the use of conventional antibiotics in aquaculture, since several EOs effectively reduce or avoid the effects of bacterial infections in fish. The use of EOs through nanotechnology delivery systems, especially in dietary supplementation experiments, is promising. This form of application of the EOs allows a potentiation and targeting of the desired effect of the EOs and also allows the protection of EOs active constituents against enzymatic hydrolysis, deserving further study.  相似文献

Constructed wetlands are among the recently proven efficient technologies for wastewater treatment. Compared to conventional treatment systems, constructed wetlands are low cost, are easily operated and maintained, and have a strong potential for application in developing countries, particularly by small rural communities. However, these systems have not found widespread use, due to lack of awareness, and local expertise in developing the technology on a local basis. This paper summarizes information on current methods used for wastewater treatment in developing countries, and briefly gives basic information on wetlands. The paper further examines the potential of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment and reuse in developing countries by looking at the results of current research initiatives towards implementation of the technology in these countries. Future considerations in choosing constructed wetlands as wastewater treating systems in developing countries are highlighted.  相似文献

To evaluate the efficiency of oxygen (O2) uptake from water through the fish gill lamellar system, a cost function (CF) representing mechanical power expenditure for water ventilation and blood circulation through the gill was formulated, by applying steady-state fluid mechanics to a homogeneous lamellar-channel model. This approach allowed us to express CF as the function of inter-lamellar water channel width (w) and to derive an analytical solution of the width (wmin) at the minimum CF. Morphometric and physiological data for rainbow trout in the literature were referred to calculate CF(w) curves and their wmin values at five intensity stages of swimming exercise. Obtained wmin values were evenly distributed around the standard measure of the width (ws = 24 μm) in this fish. Individual levels of CF(wmin) were also fairly close to the corresponding CF(ws) values within a 10% deviation, suggesting the reliability of approximating [CF(wmin) = CF(ws)]. The cost-performance of O2 uptake through the gill (ηg) was then assessed from reported data of total O2 uptake/CF(ws) at each intensity stage. The ηg levels at any swimming stage exceeded 95% of the theoretical maximum value, implying that O2 uptake is nearly optimally performed in the lamellar-channel system at all swimming speeds. Further analyses of O2 transport in this fresh water fish revealed that the water ventilation by the buccal/opercular pumping evokes a critical limit of swimming velocity, due to confined O2 supply to the peripheral skeletal muscles, which is avoided in ram ventilators such as tuna.  相似文献

We developed equipment that quickly and uniformly heats packed whole fish in circulating tap water using radio frequency (RF) heating. Four vacuumed plastic-packed Pacific sauries in tap water were set in a radial arrangement between coaxial cylindrical electrodes in a closed vessel. For sterilization testing, Bacillus subtilis spores added in the center of the sauries were counted after treatment. For quality assurance, meat color and backbone hardness were measured after treatment. The temperature at the center of the sauries was increased up to 130 °C for 19 min using 9 kW RF heating, and up to 119 °C for 45 min using conventional heating (CH) at 120 °C. B. subtilis spores were decreased by five logarithmic orders using RF heating and by four logarithmic orders using CH. The RF-treated meat was brighter than the CH-treated meat, and the RF-treated backbone was softer than CH-treated one.  相似文献

Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms with potential for biofuel production, CO2 mitigation and wastewater treatment; indeed they have the capacity to assimilate pollutants in wastewaters. Light supply and distribution among the microalgae culture is one of the major challenges of photo-bioreactor design, with many studies focusing on microalgae culture systems such as raceway ponds (RWP), widely used and cost-effective systems for algal biomass production. This review focuses on possible improvements of the RWP design in order to achieve optimal microalgal growth conditions and high biomass productivities, to minimize energy consumption and to lower the capital costs of the pond. The improvement strategy is based on three aspects: (1) hydrodynamic characteristics of the raceway pond, (2) evaluation of hydrodynamic and mass transfer capacities of the pond and (3) design of the RWP. Finally, a possible optimal design for the RWP is discussed in the context of wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Low impact pressure waves (LIMP) generated by small (< 1 g) underwater ignition capsules have been used to qualitatively and semi-quantitatively, as catch per unit effort, sample young-of-the-year (YOY) and juvenile fish in shallow (0-3 m) waters. In order to evaluate this method on small fish, four categories, 0+ and 1+ year Eurasian perch, 1+ year roach and 0+ to 1+ year pike, were subjected to the LIMP at distances of 0.5-5 m from the detonation point. At a distance < 1 m all specimens were stunned and either floated to the surface or sank to the bottom, whereas almost all were unaffected at distances > 3 m. The efficiency radius of the LIMP varied between 1.5 and 3.0 m, and the effective area was 7-28 m2 depending on habitat and species. The average effective area for the two extensively studied categories (0+ perch and 1+ roach) was 17.9 m2. Both depth and vegetation affected the effective area. The smallest area was obtained at < 1 m depth with vegetation present, and the largest at 1-2 m depths with no vegetation present. Within each fish category, the method sampled fish independently of length suggesting that a size/year-class is sampled equally. The proportion of affected fish that sank was large and species-dependent. In addition to the netting of surfaced fish, collecting fish from the bottom is recommended for achieving an accurate quantitative estimate. The tested parameters of the LIMP, Pmax and Impulse, declined as a function of distance following a negative exponential growth model with a baseline. The similar-shaped responses among the fish categories suggest that the method works at depths < 3 m also in heterogeneous environments, and that the method can be used to quantitatively estimate abundance of small fish with swim bladders. A model for quantitative abundance estimates based on the evaluation is presented.  相似文献

In 2002 and 2003, the Bishops Falls hydroelectric generating facility on the Exploits River, insular Newfoundland, Canada, underwent extensive refurbishing including replacement of turbines and installation of a ‘retrofitted’ bypass and fish handling system. The effectiveness of this new bypass system has been assessed during the annual downstream run of wild Atlantic salmon smolt and kelt in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, 195 smolt were radio tagged and released between June 9 and July 2, in the forebay of the hydro plant (19 releases) and one upstream (in-river) release. Fish guidance efficiency (FGE) of the system overall was 63% (123 of 195 fish) with 36 fish passing through the turbines, and six known mortalities. In 2004, between June 9 and July 2, a total of 358 smolt and 103 kelt were released in the forebay in 45 and 13 releases (n = 8 per release), respectively. The FGE of the system for smolt was 71.7% (257 of 358 fish) and for kelt was 92.3% (95 of 103 fish). In 2004, 96 tagged smolt passed through the turbines and 43 (44.8%) were detected at a downstream station confirming they had survived turbine passage, suggesting an overall survival of smolt passage of the Bishops Falls hydro facility in the order of 85%. A total of seven kelts (6.8%) passed through the turbines and were not detected 1.5 km downstream suggesting they did not survive turbine passage. Smolt spent on average 39.8 h in the forebay before exiting in 2003 and forebay residency averaged 26 h in 2004. In both years, most smolt selected their passage route, actively or passively, within the first 10 h with secondary peaks at 25–30 h and 50–55 h, corresponding to evening passage in the second and third night, after release. Few smolt were bypassed or entrained into turbines during daylight hours. In both years turbine passed smolt spent more time in the forebay suggesting the longer fish reside in the forebay the greater the likelihood of turbine entrainment. Kelt were either bypassed or turbine entrained relatively quickly, within 2 h of release, and virtually all kelts were bypassed/turbine entrained during the hours of 18:00 and 01:00. These data on fish behaviour and residency in the forebay will assist further refinement of operations of the bypass facility to optimize survival.  相似文献

Water reclamation and reuse is being actively promoted in Australia. In Queensland, surface-flow constructed wetlands with a diversity of macrophyte types offer the greatest potential for effluent polishing. Constructed wetlands in subtropical climates in coastal regions and arid climates in inland western regions are conducive to high macrophyte growth rates and nutrient removal, in particular nitrogen, producing an effluent suitable for irrigation, restoration of wetlands and/or release into natural waterways. Faecal-coliform removal is also high, producing effluent with <1000 cfu/100 mL and as low as 100 cfu/100 mL, acceptable for agricultural irrigation. Constructed wetlands can be designed to maximise the removal of both nutrients and pathogens by enhancing macrophyte diversity and natural disinfection processes by incorporating lagoons, shallow-water wetlands and subsurface-flow wetlands into the treatment train. Surface-flow wetlands can also be designed to minimise mosquito breeding by increasing macro-invertebrate predators, thereby alleviating community concerns about potential health risks. This paper addresses the role of constructed wetlands in nutrient and pathogen removal in Queensland's wetlands, and presents three case studies with respect to effluent reuse.  相似文献

Two diets for finishing pigs were used to determine the effect of adding water into the mixer on processing characteristics and pellet quality. Diet 1 was based on barley, oats and soybean meal (barley-based diet) and Diet 2 was based on maize and soybean meal (maize-based diet). Both diets were produced without and with use of an expander. Adding up to 120 g water/kg into the mixer prior to steam conditioning and pelleting (steam conditioning) of the barley-based diet, improved pelleting efficiency, pellet durability index (PDI) and modified PDI (with five hexagonal nuts added into the tumbling box), by 15, 10 and 10%, respectively. When water was added into the mixer prior to expanding the barley-based diet, PDI increased from 93 to 95% and modified PDI from 91 to 94%. The maize-based diet was processed with motor load held constant to maximize feed mill output, and production rate held constant to minimize energy use. At a constant motor load and a constant production rate, adding up to 30 g water/kg into the maize-based diet prior to steam conditioning increased pelleting efficiency by 22 and 9%, PDI was improved from 84 to 89% and from 79 to 87%, respectively. Expander conditioning of the maize-based diet increased PDI from 92% at none to 94% at 30 g/kg water addition. Correspondingly, modified PDI was increased from 89 to 93% at none and 30 g water/kg into the mixer prior to expander conditioning. The overall conclusion from the experiment was that adding water into the mixer before steam conditioning improved pelleting efficiency and pellet quality in barley- and maize-based diet for finishing pigs.  相似文献

CRISPR-Cas系统是一种目前已知的基因编辑工具,其中以靶向DNA基因组编辑的CRISPR-Cas9系统的研究较为成熟。相较于靶向DNA的基因组编辑技术CRISPR-Cas9系统,近年来靶向RNA的Ⅵ型-CRISPR家族CRISPR-C2c2/Cas13a系统研究日渐增多。CRISPR-Cas13a系统具有特异性识别并结合单链RNA序列从而非特异性切割RNA的特点,可应用于检测肿瘤外周血游离核酸,对早期肿瘤患者进行筛查。同时,Cas13a在进行体内RNA切割的过程中,不涉及编码基因DNA的改变,可直接对基因转录产物mRNA进行编辑,达到基因修饰的目的,并能够同时靶向多基因转录产物从而调控基因的表达。Cas13a系统可应用于分子诊断及RNA编辑中,该系统在肿瘤的诊断与治疗中也被证实具有广阔的发展前景。基于已有的文献资料,文中综述了靶向RNA的CRISPR-Cas13a技术应用于肿瘤诊断与治疗的研究进展,探讨了CRISPR-Cas13a系统对癌症治疗的新思路及存在的局限,并展望了未来可能的研究方向。  相似文献

Official guidelines for the on-site treatment of domestic sewage have recently been published by the Danish Ministry of Environment as a consequence of new treatment requirements for single houses and dwellings in rural areas. This paper summarises the guidelines for vertical constructed wetland systems (planted filter beds) that will fulfil demands of 95% removal of BOD and 90% nitrification. The system can be extended with chemical precipitation of phosphorus with aluminium polychloride in the sedimentation tank to meet requirements of 90% phosphorus removal. The necessary surface area of the filter bed is 3.2 m2/person equivalent and the effective filter depth is 1.0 m. The filter medium must be filtersand with a d10 between 0.25 and 1.2 mm, a d60 between 1 and 4 mm, and a uniformity coefficient (U = d60/d10) less than 3.5. The sewage is, after sedimentation, pulse-loaded onto the surface of the bed using pumping and a network of distribution pipes. The drainage layer in the bottom of the bed is passively aerated through vertical pipes extending into the atmosphere in order to improve oxygen transfer to the bed medium. Half of the nitrified effluent from the filter is recirculated to the first chamber of the sedimentation tank or to the pumping well in order to enhance denitrification and to stabilise the treatment performance of the system. A phosphorus removal system is installed in the sedimentation tank using a small dosing pump. The mixing of chemicals is obtained by a simple airlift pump, which also circulates water in the sedimentation tank. The vertical flow constructed wetland system is an attractive alternative to the common practice of soil infiltration and provides efficient treatment of sewage for discharge into the aquatic environment.  相似文献

Antimicrobial resistance is a major concern in health care and farming settings throughout the world. The level of antimicrobial resistance continues to increase and the requirement for a novel and possibly dramatic change in therapy choices is required. One possible mechanism for overcoming resistance is the actual removal of antimicrobial treatment from the therapeutic armoury. This review examines the potential for success of a policy advocating the reduction of antimicrobial use and additionally the withdrawal of such treatments. Evidence from agriculture suggests that the removal of certain drugs from animal husbandry can result in concomitant falls in certain drug resistances in human patients.  相似文献
