Chronic mountain sickness (CMS) or Monge's disease is a clinical entity observed among residents at altitude characterized by polycythaemia increased above the physiological level due to altitude adaptation. From correlation studies of haematocrit with ventilation rate of healthy and diseased native high altitude residents (4,540 m) it was found that CMS is a clinical manifestation of aging. The higher the altitude the sooner the symptoms of excessive polycythaemia will become evident.  相似文献

While several studies have examined the abiotic effects of altitude (low ambient temperatures and hypoxia) on the aerobic performance of small mammals, few have explored the effects of development and maturation at different altitudes on aerobic performance as adults. We examined the basal metabolism and aerobic performance of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) under four different developmental and testing regimes: (1) reared (gestation through weaning) and tested at high altitude; (2) reared and tested at low altitude; (3) reared at low altitude and tested at high altitude after acclimation; and (4) reared at low altitude and tested in hypoxia without acclimation. We found that mice that developed and were tested at low altitudes had a higher aerobic capacity (both aerobic performance and basal metabolic rate) than those that developed, or were acclimated as adults, at high altitudes. In addition, we found that mice that developed at high altitude did not have a higher aerobic capacity than those that developed at low altitude and were acclimated to high altitude as adults. Both groups tested at high altitudes had higher hematocrits (% red blood cells) and hemoglobin than mice tested at low altitudes. Surprisingly, mice acclimated to low altitudes and given an instantaneous exposure to hypoxia did not suffer a depression in aerobic performance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Not only were used Random amplified polymorphismic DNA(RAPD) markers as input for an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and cluster analysis to describe the population genetic structure, but also morphometric analysis of Formica japonica in Korea in order to investigate the relationships between local populations according to altitude. The ten populations of F. japonica in Korea did not showed any relationships according to altitude in morphological analysis, while they showed distinct relationship in RAPD analysis. It was noticed that they were clearly separated as four groups according to altitude. The first was Jirisan-Gachilbong- Gyebangsan population, the second Iksansi-Odongdo, the third Deukyusan-Hallasan, the fourth Siheungsi- Seonamsa-Jinjusi. The first group was high mountainous, the second flat and low altitude, the third high mountainous, and the fourth flat and low altitude. They occur from low altitude to comparative high altitude 1,400 m in Korea. Actually, it was found that the relationships of 10 local populations of Korean Formica japonica were not related to morphological evolution, but related to molecular evolutionary data evolved from RAPD analysis.  相似文献

凤仙花属(Impatiens)植物具有极为广泛的多样性和类型各异的特化传粉者, 被誉为“双子叶的兰花”, 受到众多传粉生物学家的关注。本文以海南特有种海南凤仙花(Impatiens hainanensis)为研究对象, 对3个不同海拔梯度的种群进行了开花生物学特性和开花物候、花器官结构、花粉活力和柱头活性、传粉者种类和访花行为及繁育系统的比较研究。结果表明: 单花花期4.10 ± 0.46 d, 雄性期和雌性期分别约为3.15 ± 0.24 d和0.95 ± 0.36 d; 种群开花峰期在8月初, 高海拔种群的花期高峰相对滞后。低、中海拔种群花粉活力呈现先升高后下降的趋势, 以开花第2 d花粉活力最高; 高海拔种群花粉活力随开花时间推移逐渐下降; 柱头活性随开花时间的推移而增强, 高海拔种群开花各天次均较低、中海拔种群低。主要传粉昆虫为黄黑无垫蜂(Amegilla leptocoma)和绿条无垫蜂(A. zonata), 低、中海拔种群以黄黑无垫蜂为主, 高海拔种群以绿条无垫蜂为主。未观察到自动自花授粉和无融合生殖现象, 人工授粉能明显增加坐果率(75-90%), 自然坐果率在高海拔种群相对较低(40-60%), 说明存在较强的传粉者限制。海南凤仙花的保护需要同时关注其有效传粉者的保护, 促进有效传粉昆虫在不同海拔种群之间的往来, 保证种群间的花粉流与种子流, 维持海南凤仙花的种群遗传多样性与有效种群大小。  相似文献

Subjective light patterns (phosphenes) can be produced by electrical stimulation of the temples with rectangular current pulses of about 0.1 to 1 mA RMS within the electroencephalographic frequency range (1 to 70 c/s). The phosphenes either consist of formless flickering of the visual field or of different abstract geometrical figures on a dark background. Electrical excitation of phosphenes in Munich (altitude 530 m) and in the mountains at 2962 m showed the tendency that more phosphenes can be elicited at high altitude. There was no difference between the types of phosphenes obtained at the two altitude levels.  相似文献

The influence of altitude and latitude on some structure sizes of Lutzomyia intermedia was noted; several structures of insects collected in higher localities were greater, according to Bergmann's rule. This influence was more remarkable in two localities of the State of Espírito Santo, probably due to greater differences in altitude. Comparing insects from different latitudes, more differences were noted in comparisons of insects from low altitude localities than in those of material from higher altitudes. The small number of differences between insects collected in July and in December does not indicate a defined influence of season and temperature on the size of adults. The possible epidemiological implications of these variations are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine whether a moderate altitude (1,350 m, Strbské Pleso, High Tatras) would act as a hypoxic stimulus on the cardiopulmonary system of young and adult rats. We used three experimental groups of animals differing in the duration of time for which they were kept at the given altitude (60 and 120 days) and the age at which they were acclimatized (from the 5th and the 60th day of life). The controls were kept at an altitude of 200 m (Prague). We found that an altitude of 1,350 m produced a significant increase in blood pressure in the lesser circulation; this response did not depend on the animals' age. Right ventricular enlargement occurred at the same time and was more pronounced in rats which had been acclimatized from infancy. The systemic blood pressure fell mildly, but significantly, only in animals exposed to altitude from adulthood; elevation of the haematocrit was likewise recorded only in this group. The results show that even a moderate altitude influences the cardiopulmonary system of the rat in a manner characteristic of the effect of chronic hypoxic hypoxia.  相似文献

对青藏高原东北部两个不同海拔地点(互助,2460m和海北,3200m)的露蕊乌头Aconitum gymnandrum的传粉生态学进行了比较研究。研究结果表明高海拔居群的单花花期、雄性期持续时间、雌性期持续时间比低海拔长。露蕊乌头不存在无融合生殖现象,尽管高度自交亲和,但产生种子必须依赖传粉媒介。熊蜂是露蕊乌头的主要传粉昆虫,两个居群均存在传粉限制。熊蜂取食花蜜为主,在同一个花序上的访问顺序以由下向上为主,但在互助居群和海北居群有3.9%和2.7%的访花是由上向下进行的。统计发现有37.7%和29.3%的访问行为发生在同一植株内;因此,同株异花传粉造成的自交在露蕊乌头中仍然不能避免。低海拔居群的熊蜂种类和访花频率均高于高海拔居群,但自然状态下两个居群的结实率并没有显著差异。高海拔露蕊乌头居群可能具有较长的柱头持续时间,从而补偿了由于访花频率低带来的结实率降低。  相似文献

Hypoxia impairs metabolic functions by decreasing activity and expression of ATP-consuming processes. To separate hypoxia from systemic effects, we tested whether hypoxia at high altitude affects basal and PMA-stimulated leukocyte metabolism and how this compares to acute (15 min) and 24 h of in vitro hypoxia. Leukocytes were prepared at low altitude and ~24 h after arrival at 4559 m. Mitochondrial oxygen consumption (JO?) was measured by respirometry, oxygen radicals by electron spin resonance spectroscopy, both at a Po? = 100 mmHg (JO?,???) and 20 mmHg (JO?,??). Acute hypoxia of leukocytes decreased JO? at low altitude. Exposure to high altitude decreased JO?,???, whereas JO?,?? was not affected. Acute hypoxia of low-altitude samples decreased the activity of complexes I, II, and III. At high altitude, activity of complexes I and III were decreased when measured in normoxia. Stimulation of leukocytes with PMA increased JO?,??? at low (twofold) and high altitude (five-fold). At both locations, PMA-stimulated JO? was decreased by acute hypoxia. Basal and PMA-stimulated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were unchanged at high altitude. Separate in vitro experiments performed at low altitude show that ~75% of PMA-induced increase in JO? was due to increased extra-mitochondrial JO? (JO?(,res); in the presence of rotenone and antimycin A). JO?(,res) was doubled by PMA. Acute hypoxia decreased basal JO?(,res) by ~70% and PMA-stimulated JO?(,res) by about 50% in cells cultured in normoxia and hypoxia (1.5% O?; 24 h). Conversely, 24 h in vitro hypoxia decreased mitochondrial JO?,??? and JO?,??, extra-mitochondrial, basal, and PMA-stimulated JO? were not affected. These results show that 24 h of high altitude but not 24 h in vitro hypoxia decreased basal leukocyte metabolism, whereas PMA-induced JO? and ROS formation were not affected, indicating that prolonged high-altitude hypoxia impairs mitochondrial metabolism but does not impair respiratory burst. In contrast, acute hypoxia impairs respiratory burst at either altitude.  相似文献

Aim We describe the changes in species richness, rarity and composition with altitude, and explore whether the differences in Scarabaeinae dung beetle composition along five altitudinal transects of the same mountain range are related to altitude or if there are interregional differences in these altitudinal gradients. Location Field work was carried out on the eastern slope of the eastern Cordillera, Colombian Andes, between Tamá Peak to the north, in the Tamá National Park (07°23′ N, 72°23′ W) and the San Miguel River (00°28′ N, 77°17′ W) to the south. Methods Sampling was carried out between February 1997 and November 1999 in five regions spanning elevation gradients. In each gradient, six sites were chosen at 250 m intervals between 1000 and 2250 m a.s.l. Results We found a curvilinear relationship between altitude and mean species richness, with a peak in richness at middle elevations. However, the diversity of dung beetle assemblages does not seem to be related to the interregional differences in environmental conditions. The number of geographically restricted species is negatively and significantly related to altitude, with geographically restricted species more frequent at low altitude sites. Ordination delimited the two main groups according to altitude: one with all the highest sites (1750–2250 m a.s.l.) and a second group with the remaining sites (< 1750 m a.s.l.). Analysis of species co‐occurrence shows that these dung beetle assemblages seem to be spatially structured when all sites have the same probability of being chosen. In contrast, the spatial structure of species assemblages seems to be random when the probability of choosing any site is proportional to its altitude. Main conclusions The altitude of sites is the main factor that influences the diversity of these dung beetle assemblages. The peak in species richness at middle elevations, the higher number of geographically restricted species at lower altitudinal levels, and the compositional differences along these mountain gradients seem to result from the mixing at these altitudes of dung beetle assemblages that have different environmental adaptations and, probably, different origins. The relevance of altitude in these assemblages is related to the limited role of these Neotropical high altitude environments as centres of refuge and vicariance for a monophyletic group of warm‐adapted species, for which the vertical colonization of these high mountain environments by lineages distributed at lower altitudes would have been very difficult.  相似文献

环境的差异影响动物种群生活史对策的进化。对地理分布范围广的物种而言,栖息地环境差异大,不同种群的生活史对策亦存在显著差异。个性特征作为生活史的一部分,反映了动物对环境的适应模式。前期研究表明,不同海拔区域的高原鼠兔的生活史对策存在显著差异,然而,其个性特征及与能量代谢的关联性是否也存在差异,目前尚不清楚。2018年9-10月,分别在海拔3268 m的贵南县和3980 m的玛沁县测定当地高原鼠兔的探究性与静止代谢率。结果发现,高海拔雄性高原鼠兔的探究性显著低于低海拔雄性个体;高海拔雌性高原鼠兔体重矫正静止代谢率显著高于低海拔雌性个体。高海拔地区,雌性高原鼠兔的探究性和体重矫正静止代谢率呈显著正相关,雄性高原鼠兔的探究性和体重呈显著负相关;低海拔地区,高原鼠兔的探究性和体重矫正静止代谢率或体重之间均无显著相关性。该结果 表明,调整个性特征和能量代谢及其两者的关联性也是高原鼠兔适应不同海拔栖息地环境差异的生活史对策之一。  相似文献

The distribution pattern of reptiles in mountainous regions is generally related to altitude.The distribution of viperine species can be limited by elevation.Short-tailed viper snakes(Gloydius saxatilis) of South Korea are found mostly in high elevation mountainous areas,but few studies have evaluated how their distribution relates to elevation gradient.This study was conducted from 2012 to 2013 to investigate the altitudinal distribution of short-tailed viper snakes in mountainous areas and to discover their movement patterns in Cheon-ma Mountain County Park in South Korea.A translocation method utilizing radiotracking technology was employed to confirm whether their distribution was influenced by altitude.The results showed that most short-tailed vipers were observed in middle and high altitude areas(from 400 m to 800 m),but none were observed in low altitude areas(from 200 m to 400 m).According to the results of the translocation and tracking experiments,the individuals of the translocated group showed a significantly broader home range than those of the control group.In addition,all individuals of the translocated group moved vertically,while most of the control group moved horizontally.Therefore,all translocated individuals tended to move back toward their original habitat,a high elevation area.Consequently,we concluded that the distribution of short-tailed viper snakes was limited by altitude.  相似文献

Estrous cycles and reproductive performance were compared among rats born at high altitude, rats of Berkeley stock transported to 3,800 m, and sea level controls. Disturbances of reproductive function observed in experimental groups were not due to reduced food intake. Estrous cycles of Berkeley stock at 3,800 m were normal, whereas cycles of high altitude native rats were irregular and fertility was impaired. Litter size was reduced in both groups at high altitude with fewer implantation sites than numbers of corpora lutea observed in the Berkeley stock rats at 3,800 m. In the high altitude native animals, numbers of corpora lutea correlated with implantation sites. Placentas from Berkeley stock rats (3,800 m) were heavier than those from the other groups, and fetal hematocrits from these animals were reduced.  相似文献

Two opposite views exist regarding sexual versus asexual reproductive performance of Polygonum viviparum . One suggests that increasing altitude favors flower production, while the other suggests that increasing altitude increases bulbil production. In this study, we present an investigation of the reproductive performance of 13 populations of P. viviparum on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). Our results show that, with increasing altitude, the height of inflorescence and total number of flowers and bulbils decrease significantly, but there is no significant effect on bulbil and flower number. In addition, there is a weak correlation between the proportion of flowers per population and altitude in our study sites due to the exception population 12, which is in a disturbed habitat. We conclude that more resources might be allocated to flowers in populations at higher altitudes, indicating the importance of sexual reproduction over asexual reproduction in alpine plants of QTP.  相似文献

The effect of three strains of the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and two strains of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin upon the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), was studied in three coffee farms at different altitudes (450-1,100 m above sea level) in Soconusco, Chiapas, Mexico. The maximum average percentage mycosis varied according to altitude. At 450 m asl (El Rincon) mycosis was 14.3% for B. bassiana and 6.3% for M. anisopliae; at 880 m asl (Santa Anita) mycosis was 40.6% for B. bassiana and 12.6% for M. anisopliae, and at 1,100 m asl (Alpujarras) 33.9% for B. bassiana and 22. 1% for M. anisopliae. The effect of fungal mycosis through time was not significant (P > 0.01) in any of the farms, but there was a significant difference between the strains of the fungus (P < 0.01); the best strains being Bb25 and Ma4 at the lower altitude, Bb26 and Ma4 for the middle altitude and Bb26 and Ma4 at the higher altitude. Environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity and rain were not correlated with the percentage mycosis caused by B. bassiana and M. anisopliae. However, in the case of B. bassiana there was a significant, positive correlation (P < 0.01) between the infestation levels of the pest and the mycosis response of the entomopathogen.  相似文献

Certain morphological characters in the Mediterranean land snail genus Albinaria arc believed not to be closely related to ecological conditions. Recently this view has been challenged by a study on A. idaea from central Crete (Greece) claiming that shell characters such as rib density, apcrtural lamella sizes and shell size parameters depend on ecological variables related to altitude. The present study suggests that variation in apertural lamellae, shell size parameters and shell shape were not related to altitude. Neither were they closely related to expected temperature gradients, nor to Drilits beetle predation pressure, nor to vegetational cover (forests/open land). The rib density was the only factor responding to altitude, but after accounting for altitude, altitude-independent regional variation was also of importance. The correlation with altitude was possibly caused by a response to temperature gradients.  相似文献

Diverse biological characters commonly vary with altitude in species that have a wide altitudinal distribution, partly at least as a result of adaptation to differences in aridity, but whether such variation exists for phytochemical constituents remains unknown. Therefore, levels of seven important phytochemical constituents of Swertia franchetiana (swertiamarin, oleanolic acid, swertisin, mangiferin, 1,5,8-trihydroxy-3-methoxyxanthone, 1,8-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyxanthone and 1,8-dihydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyxanthone) were studied and statistically compared, using materials collected from sites ranging from 2200 to 3960 m in altitude. Swertiamarin was the most abundant in all samples, then mangiferin, oleanolic acid and the other three xanthones. Throughout the distributional range of this species, no altitudinal trend was detected for other constituents except 1,8-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyxanthone, which showed a negative correlation with altitude. However, the concentration of 1,8-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyxanthone and mangiferin showed a significantly latitudinal and longitudinal correlation.  相似文献

The lengths and widths of body parts are influenced to a considerable extent by the environment. Along with increasing altitude, wings of arthropods degenerated or even disappeared so that a trend of degeneration on their acoustic systems appeared. We measured 131 adult skulls of daurian pikas, Ochotona daurica , in order to know whether the degeneration will happen in mammals. Our results show that both the size and relative size of auditory bulla of daurian pikas were negatively correlated with altitude and this change was significant. However, the ear length showed an opposite trend. We suggest that lower oxygen concentration, constantly strong winds and lack of resources at high altitude are responsible for the decrease in the size of the auditory bulla. Besides thermoregulation for large different temperatures of day and night in high altitude, larger external ears of the pika help detect the direction of the predator and could compensate for a relatively small bulla.  相似文献
