A one-dimensional numerical model and a two-dimensional numerical model of the hydrodynamic and thermal structure of Lake Shira during summer have been developed, with several original physical and numerical features. These models are well suited to simulate the formation and dynamics of vertical stratification and provide a basis for an ecological water-quality model of the lake. They allow for the quantification of the vertical mixing processes that govern not only the thermal structure but also the nutrient exchange, and more generally, the exchange of dissolved and particulate matter between different parts of the lake. The outcome of the calculations has been compared with the field data on vertical temperature and salinity distributions in Lake Shira. Lake Shira is meromictic and exhibits very stable annual stratification. The stratification is so stable because of the high salinity of the water. If the water in Lake Shira were fresh and other parameters (depth, volume, and meteorology) were the same, as now, the lake would be mixed in autumn. Using the newly developed models and using common meteorological parameters, we conclude that Lake Shira will remain stratified in autumn as long as the average salinity is higher than 3‰.  相似文献

This work describes avenues to use satellite information to analyse dynamic processes in aquatic ecosystems. Information for this analysis, was retrieved from AVHRR satellite sensor data. This information consisteds of time series of images of radiation temperature and turbidity. We expect this information will be of great value in analysing inland water bodies. Methods to process satellite information using original software and data processing techniques are proposed. For the investigation of the process and analyses of satellite information Shira Lake (Khakasia, Siberia) was used as a case study. To study the variability of the surface temperature and turbidity of the Lake in summer, the satellite and ground-truth data of the lake was applied. This study represents the first evaluation of the dynamic processes for Lake Shira based on satellite, ground-truth and modelling data. We developed algorithms and software to process satellite images to enable the reconstruction of time dependence of temperature and spectral reflectance of water bodies in the visible range, and to make computer-animated films visualising the spatial and temporal dynamics of the study parameters. The analyses of morphometric, meteorological and hydrological characteristics of Lake Shira have provided a realistic opportunity for processing the satellite information and to develop numerical models of variability of the hydrological regime of the lake. The results obtained demonstrate the feasibility of systematically retrieving the spatial information from the satellite data on the dynamics of the surface water temperature and of the suspended matter in the lake.  相似文献

In a brackish, temperate, 24-m-deep Lake Shira, the profiles of salinity, temperature, oxygen and sulfide concentrations were measured on a seasonal basis from 2002 to 2009. The lake was shown to be meromictic with autumnal overturn restricted to mixolimnion. The depth of mixolimnion and position of oxic–anoxic interface varied annually. The spring mixing processes contribute to the formation of mixolimnion in autumn. The exceptionally windy spring of 2007 caused the deepening of mixolimnion in the winter of 2008. The winter position of oxic–anoxic interface was affected by the position of lower boundary of mixolimnion in all winters. The salinity in the winter mixolimnion increased compared with the autumn because of freezing out of salts from the upper water layers meters during ice formation and their dissolution in water below. The profiles of salinity and temperature were simulated by the mathematical 1-D model of temperature and salinity conditions taking into account ice formation. The simulated profiles generally coincided with the measured ones. The coincidence implies that simplified one-dimensional model can be applied to roughly describe salinity and density profiles and mixing behavior of Lake Shira.  相似文献

In meromictic lakes such as Lake Shira, horizontal inhomogeneity is small in comparison with vertical gradients. To determine the vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, and density of water in a deep zone of a Lake Shira, or other saline lakes, a one-dimensional (in vertical direction) mathematical model is presented. A special feature of this model is that it takes into account the process of ice formation. The model of ice formation is based on the one-phase Stefan problem with the linear temperature distribution in the solid phase. A convective mixed layer is formed under an ice cover due to salt extraction in the ice formation process. To obtain analytical solutions for the vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, and density of water, we use a scheme of vertical structure in the form of several layers. In spring, the ice melts as top and bottom. These processes are taken into account in the model. The calculated profiles of salinity and temperature of Shira Lake are in good agreement with field measurement data for each season. Additionally, we focussed on the redox zone, which is the zone in which the aerobic layers of a water column meet the anaerobic ones. Hyperactivity of plankton communities is observed in this zone in lakes with hydrogen sulphide monimolimnion, and Lake Shira is among them. The location of the redox zone in the lake, which is estimated from field measurements, coincides with a sharp increase in density (the pycnocline) during autumn and winter. During spring and summer, the redox zone is deeper than the pycnocline. The location of pycnocline calculated with the hydro physical model is in good agreement with field measurement data.  相似文献

The water and hydrochemical balance of Shira and Itkul lakes, located in the arid (steppe) zone in the Republic of Khakassia (Russian Federation), has been calculated. It is shown that Lake Itkul can be considered a drained lake, which significantly determines the basic differences of the hydrochemical balance in the two water bodies. The outflow of water from Itkul to Shira is, on average, 6791000 m3/year, and the average outflow of dissolved salts is 35697 t/year. Lake Shira can be considered a drainless water body with an evaporation mechanism of formation of the chemical composition of its waters, and Lake Itkul is considered a flowing water reservoir. The salt concentration in Itkul is not as high as that in Shira due to the lower influence of evaporation on the formation of the chemical composition of waters and time of their interaction. It has been assumed that this phenomenon is regular, rather than exceptional, for the arid zone of Northern and Central Asia.  相似文献

A feature of meromictic lakes is that several physicochemical and biological gradients affect the vertical distribution of different organisms. The vertical stratification of physical, chemical and biological components in saline, fishless meromictic lakes Shira and Shunet (Siberia, Russia) is quite different mainly because both mean depth and maximum depth of lakes differ as well as their salinity levels differ. The chemocline of the Lake Shira, as in many meromictic lakes, is inhabited by bacterial community consisting of purple sulphur and heterotrophic bacteria. As the depth of the chemocline is variable, the bacterial community does not attain high densities. The mixolimnion in Lake Shira, which is thermally stratified in summer, also creates different habitat for various species. The distribution of phytoplankton is non-uniform with its biomass peak in the metalimnion. The distribution of zooplankton is also heterogeneous with rotifers and juvenile copepods inhabiting the warmer epilimnion and older copepods found in the cold but oxic hypolimnion. The amphipod Gammarus lacustris which can be assigned to the higher trophic link in the fishless lake’s ecosystem, such as Lake Shira, is also distributed non-uniformly, with its peak density generally observed in the thermocline region. The chemocline in Lake Shunet is located at the depth of 5 m, and unlike in Lake Shira, due to a sharp salinity gradient between the mixolimnion and monimolimnion, this depth is very stable. The mixolimnion in Lake Shunet is relatively shallow and the chemocline is inhabited by (1) an extremely dense bacterial community; (2) a population of Cryptomonas sp.; and (3) ciliate community comprising several species. As the mixolimnion of Lake Shunet is not thermally stratified for long period, the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations are not vertically stratified. The gammarids, however, tend to concentrate in a narrow layer located 1–2 m above the chemocline. We believe that in addition to vertical inhomogeneities of both physicochemical parameters, biological and physical factors also play a role in maintaining these inhomogeneities. We conclude that the stratified distributions of the major food web components will have several implications for ecosystem structure and dynamics. Trophic interactions as well as mass and energy flows can be significantly impacted by such heterogeneous distributions. Species spatially separated even by relatively short distances, say a few centimetres will not directly compete. Importantly, we demonstrate that not only bacteria, phytoflagellates and ciliate tend to concentrate in thin layers but also larger-sized species such Gammarus (amphipods) can also under certain environmental conditions have stratified distribution with maxima in relatively thin layer. As the vertical structure of the lake ecosystem is rather complex in such stratified lakes as ours, the strategy of research, including sampling techniques, should consider potentially variable and non-homogeneous distributions.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of the vertical structure of small saline Lake Uchum, located in the steppe arid zone of the south of Siberia (Krasnoyarsk krai), has been studied in detail for the first time. This lake is a meromictic water body. We have revealed a heterogeneous vertical distribution of plankton organisms and a dense population of purple sulfuric bacteria in the redox zone. The taxonomic composition and seasonal dynamics of phyto- and zooplankton are described. Presumably, the meromixis of Lake Uchum is due to the inflow of fresh water to the surface of the saline water body during the rise of its level in the early 20th century, similarly to lakes Shira and Shunet located nearby. The processes of salt displacement into the solution during the formation of ice, as well as the precipitation of salts in the winter, also contribute to the maintenance of permanent stratification. The information on the current state of the lake can be useful for reconstructing the climate by bottom sediments, as well as for creating a model of water quality and investigating the therapeutic properties of lake mud.  相似文献

Resistance to Ampicillin and Kanamycin displayed by heterotrophic bacteria isolated in Summer and in Spring from the littoral and the central parts of Lake Shira (a therapeutic lake in the Khakasia Republic, Russia) has been investigated. It has been found that in Summer, human and animal microflora featuring multiple antibiotic resistance (to Ampicillin and Kanamycin) predominates in all the studied stations of the littoral zone of the lake. In Spring, concentrations of bacteria featuring multiple antibiotic resistance decrease significantly and bacteria sensitive to antibiotics predominate in the lake. Emergence of multiple antibiotic resistance in bacteria of Lake Shira is caused by the input of allochthonous bacteria into the lake; this feature of heterotrophic bacteria of Lake Shira can be used to monitor the impact on the ecosystem made by health resorts.  相似文献

Devils Lake in northeastern North Dakota (USA) is a terminal lake of glacial origin with a substantial sulfate content. Since 1940, the lake water level has risen over 13.5m and salinity has decreased. Devils Lake consists of a series of interconnected basins with sulfate concentration increasing in an eastward direction from 450mg/l in West Bay to 3000mg/l in East Devils Lake. Using sulfate as a tracer and linking measurements of specific conductance with observed time series of water surface elevations, wind, and water velocity, this paper illustrates the magnitude and dynamics of mass transport and exchange processes between the multiple basins of Devils Lake. Measurements show small horizontal salinity gradients within the lake basins, but large salinity gradients in some of the exchange zones connecting basins. Vertical salinity gradients were observed in small basins and near exchange zones with strong horizontal salinity differentials. These instances of vertical stratification were associated with buoyancy driven exchange flows and wind sheltering. Exchange flow velocities between selected basins were correlated with wind direction and speed. Interbasin exchange flows were found to reverse direction frequently in response to the prevailing wind direction. Flow direction frequencies in one specific exchange zone were 31% west to east, 48% east to west, and 21% bidirectional (stratified). At the lake level observed in 2000, time averaged, measured interbasin exchange flow rates were 30--40m3/s compared to tributary inflow rates to the lake of 3--9m3/s.  相似文献

A three-dimensional operational hydrodynamic model, developed at the Institute of Oceanography, University of Gdańsk was used to forecast hydrological conditions in the Oder Estuary. The model was based on the coastal ocean circulation model known as the Princeton Ocean Model (POM). Because of wind-driven water backup in the Oder mouth, a simplified operational model of river discharge, based on water budget in a stream channel, was developed. Linking these two models into a single system made it possible to forecast water levels, currents, water temperature, and salinity in the estuary. A good fit between the observed and computed data allowed to consider the model as a reliable environmental tool. Obtaining a hydrological forecast via a quick website access gives potential users an opportunity to predict the day-by-day course of processes that may affect different areas of human life and activities, e.g., navigation, port operations, flood protection of coastal areas; the predictions may also be used in studies of coastal processes in the estuary.  相似文献

The results of numerical modelling of large-scale circulation in Lakes Onega and Ladoga are presented, with primary emphasis on the temporal variability of currents with time scales of days. Some typical circulation patterns have been inferred from model calculations. They reflect the existence of different dynamic regimes in the lakes, namely, forced and free circulation regimes. The forced circulation regime is the well-known wind-induced double-gyre circulation accompanied by coastal upwelling and downwelling. A case of double-gyre circulation in Lake Onega was investigated in particular detail. The second dynamic regime is a free response (or a relaxation) of the stratified lake to wind cessation, and is connected closely with the evolution of wind-induced upwelling and thermal front propagation. Diagnostic calculations demonstrate that the regime of relaxation supports the restoration of cyclonic circulation in Lake Onega. Barotropic circulation patterns in Lake Ladoga were calculated with the emphasis on prevailing winds from west to south-east. Our calculations show that the bottom relief of Lake Ladoga causes asymmetry in the double-gyre circulation patterns. In particular, approximately equal cyclonic and anticyclonic circulation cells appearing in the case of southerly wind transform to a single dominant cyclonic cell and several small anticyclonic cells in the case of westerly wind. We also found especially strong sensitivity of the sense of rotation of the largest gyre to the east-west components of the wind vector.  相似文献

Microbiological and isotopic-geochemical investigations of the brackish meromictic lakes Shira and Shunet were performed in the steppe region of Khakasia in winter. Measurements made with a submersed sensor demonstrated that one-meter ice transmits light in a quantity sufficient for oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis. As in the summer season, in the community of phototrophic bacteria found in Lake Shira, the purple sulfur bacteria Amoebobacter purpureus dominated, whereas, in Lake Shunet, the green sulfur bacteria Pelodictyon luteolum were predominant. Photosynthetic production, measured using the radioisotopic method, was several times lower than that in summer. The rates of sulfate reduction and production and oxidation of methane in the water column and bottom sediments were also lower than those recorded in summer. The process of anaerobic methane oxidation in the sediments was an exception, being more intense in winter than in summer. The data from radioisotopic measurements of the rates of microbial processes correlate well with the results of determination of the isotopic composition of organic and mineral carbon (delta13C) and hydrogen sulfide and sulfate (delta34S) and suggest considerable seasonal variations in the activity of the microbial community in the water bodies investigated.  相似文献

Fluctuations in the atmospheric characteristics, as well as variations in the water level of Lake Chapala are discussed. Field measurements of the atmospheric characteristics and lake level during December 1996 through January 1997 are described; using spectrum analysis of synchronous time series. The findings suggest that the variability is due to the diurnal cycle of atmospheric elements. Lake breeze circulation plays an important role in the area of Lake Chapala; since it was registered in 83% of the data. Periodic fluctuations in atmospheric pressure and wind generate significant seiche amplitudes in the lake, with the periods of about 6 h. With the help of a simple model, the seiche parameters are estimated. The amplitude of one-nodal seiches on one of the edges of the lake; is on average equal to 18 mm. This wave should generate currents of approximately 0.012 m s–1 at the lake`s centre in the area of the nodal line. The experimental results on the thermal regime and circulation of Lake Chapala are discusssed as well. Surface temperature variations were registered at the eastern part of the lake. In all cross-sections, typical spatial variations of 3 °C were registered, over a distance of 100–300 m. A bouy station registered movements of an internal thermal front in the body of the water. The leading edge of the front was accompanied by intense internal waves, in the form of internal KdeV solitones. The front near the buoy station was produced by the movement of a warm body of water travelling from the shallow eastern part of the lake and trigered by morning breeze.  相似文献

Bioluminescence bioassays based on luminous bacteria (Photobacterium phosphopreum) and coupled enzyme system NADH-FMN-oxidoreductase-luciferase were adapted for monitoring the saline-water conditions of Lake Shira (Khakasia, Siberia). The differences in bioluminescence responses have been found to be related to the salt composition and the oxidation-reduction properties of water. Bioluminescent kinetics parameters, which are mostly sensitive to pollution under conditions of saline water, have been observed. The enzymatic system in the presence of 1,4-benzoquinone are shown to be more sensitive to redox characteristics of the salt water than this in the absence of 1,4-benzoquinone. 1,4-benzoquinone should be applied for the preparation of a model solution for the monitoring of redox properties of the salt water. Using this technique, the results of bioluminescence analysis are used to construct a heterogeneity map that characterizes the spatial and temporal water quality of lake Shira. A partial map was based on the bioluminescence characteristics of water samples taken along the shoreline, sampling stations in the different places and in different depths of the lake. It has been demonstrated that the bioluminescence assay measurements must be done within two hours after the sampling time.  相似文献

The concentrations of carotenoids buried in the bottom sediments of Lake Shira (Siberia, Khakassiya) have analyzed for the period of the last 2300 years. The bottom sediments were found to contain carotenoids, which are molecular markers of the corresponding groups of Phototrophic organisms. The bottom sediments of Lake Shira were shown to be a promising object for climate reconstructions of the Late Holocene in southern Siberia.  相似文献

A one-dimensional ecological model of the meromictic brackish Lake Shira (Russia, Khakasia) was developed. The model incorporates state-of-the-art knowledge about the functioning of the lake ecosystem using the most recent field observations and ideas from PCLake, a general ecosystem model of shallow freshwater lakes. The model of Lake Shira presented here takes into account the vertical dynamics of biomasses of the main species of algae, zooplankton and microbial community, as well as the dynamics of oxygen, detritus, nutrients and hydrogen sulphide from spring to autumn. Solar radiation, temperature and diffusion are modelled using real meteorological data. The parameters of the model were calibrated to the field data, after applying different methods of sensitivity analysis to the model. The resulting patterns of phytoplankton and nutrients dynamics show a good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the field observations during the whole summer season. Results are less satisfactory with respect to the vertical distribution of zooplankton biomass. We hypothesize that this is due to the fact that the current model does not take the sex and age structure of zooplankton into account. The dynamics of oxygen, hydrogen sulphide and the modelled positions of the chemocline and thermocline are again in good agreement with field data. This resemblance confirms the validity of the approach we took in the model regarding the main physical, chemical and ecological processes. This general model opens the way for checking various hypotheses on the functioning of the Lake Shira ecosystem in future investigations and for analysing options for management of this economically important lake.  相似文献

Meromictic lakes located in landlocked steppes of central Asia (~2500 km inland) have unique geophysiochemical characteristics compared to other meromictic lakes. To characterize their bacteria and elucidate relationships between those bacteria and surrounding environments, water samples were collected from three saline meromictic lakes (Lakes Shira, Shunet and Oigon) in the border between Siberia and the West Mongolia, near the center of Asia. Based on in-depth tag pyrosequencing, bacterial communities were highly variable and dissimilar among lakes and between oxic and anoxic layers within individual lakes. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla, whereas three genera of purple sulfur bacteria (a novel genus, Thiocapsa and Halochromatium) were predominant bacterial components in the anoxic layer of Lake Shira (~20.6% of relative abundance), Lake Shunet (~27.1%) and Lake Oigon (~9.25%), respectively. However, few known green sulfur bacteria were detected. Notably, 3.94% of all sequencing reads were classified into 19 candidate divisions, which was especially high (23.12%) in the anoxic layer of Lake Shunet. Furthermore, several hydro-parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, H2S and salinity) were associated (P< 0.05) with variations in dominant bacterial groups. In conclusion, based on highly variable bacterial composition in water layers or lakes, we inferred that the meromictic ecosystem was characterized by high diversity and heterogenous niches.  相似文献

Many studies have assessed the effect of landscape patterns on spatial ecological processes by simulating these processes in computer‐generated landscapes with varying composition and configuration. To generate such landscapes, various neutral landscape models have been developed. However, the limited set of landscape‐level pattern variables included in these models is often inadequate to generate landscapes that reflect real landscapes. In order to achieve more flexibility and variability in the generated landscapes patterns, a more complete set of class‐ and patch‐level pattern variables should be implemented in these models. These enhancements have been implemented in Landscape Generator (LG), which is a software that uses optimization algorithms to generate landscapes that match user‐defined target values. Developed for participatory spatial planning at small scale, we enhanced the usability of LG and demonstrated how it can be used for larger scale ecological studies. First, we used LG to recreate landscape patterns from a real landscape (i.e., a mountainous region in Switzerland). Second, we generated landscape series with incrementally changing pattern variables, which could be used in ecological simulation studies. We found that LG was able to recreate landscape patterns that approximate those of real landscapes. Furthermore, we successfully generated landscape series that would not have been possible with traditional neutral landscape models. LG is a promising novel approach for generating neutral landscapes and enables testing of new hypotheses regarding the influence of landscape patterns on ecological processes. LG is freely available online.  相似文献

This study was conducted to analyse vertical dynamics of phytoplankton distribution in Shira Lake during the summer stratification regime. From late June to September phytoplankton in Shira Lake were stratified with the maximum in the lower part of the thermocline, at a depth of 8–12 m, with a chlorophyll concentration up to 23 g and biomass up to 5 mg l–1. Maxima of chlorophyll and biomass of cyanobacteria and green algae were in different layers. From June to September a major part of chlorophyll a was in green algae, while under ice – in cyanobacteria. The variable fluorescence proves high photosynthetic activity of algae in the depth assemblage. Epifluorescent analysis disclosed that additional light-harvesting pigments were better developed in cells from the depth maximum. The maximum of gross primary production calculated from fluorescence corresponded to the depth maximum of phytoplankton. Primary production over a season was 2.7 gO2 m–2. Formation mechanisms of the depth maximum of phytoplankton are discussed in this paper.  相似文献
