An analysis of the results of long-term stationary studies (1987–1996) on a Rana arvalis population showed that the mean body length and reproductive parameters of females increased with age. Significant interannual changes in body length and egg size (but not in fecundity and reproductive effort) were also accounted for by conditions of the warm season preceding the breeding season. The dependence of egg diameter and reproductive effort on the female body length weakened with age, and only the relationship between body length and fecundity was characterized by positive allometry. The survival rate of mature females depended on the premetamorphic survival rate and, therefore, was higher in earlier generations, in which the aquatic phase proceeded under more favorable conditions. The rate of reproduction (R 0) decreased and, therefore, further population growth slowed down only after the initial abundance of the generation had reached a relatively high level. An increase in the initial abundance of the generation exerts a strong influence on R 0 via a decrease in the survival of premetamorphic animals and, to a lesser extent, via a decrease in the body length and fecundity of tree-and four-year-old females. Changes in the annual abundance of breeding females in R. arvalis were more abrupt and less prolonged than those in the sympatric R. temporaria population. The holding capacity of the environment for the aquatic phase of the R. arvalis life cycle was higher than that for R. temporaria. Therefore, the population abundance of R. arvalis, compared to R. temporaria, was not subject to stringent negative feedback regulation dependent on the initial number of animals.  相似文献

The introduction and translocation of nonindigenous marine species is widespread and can pose severe threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Predicting which species are potential invaders is of particular interest to ecologists. One approach is to identify characteristics that predispose a species to becoming a successful invader. Since its introduction in the 1980’s, the invasive Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, has shown a remarkable ability to colonize rocky intertidal habitats along the east coast of the United States. In Long Island Sound H. sanguineus occurs sympatrically with the functionally equivalent, but non-invasive, native Atlantic mud crab, Panopeus herbstii. The presence of both species at the same site allowed us to make a detailed, simultaneous assessment of life history traits and adult dispersibility of co-occurring invading and native crab species. We investigated fecundity and maturation rates, length of breeding season and brood production for both species, and conducted field experiments using mark–recapture techniques to determine mobility patterns. Our results show that the nonindigenous Asian crab has a greater reproductive potential than the native mud crab as evidenced by a longer breeding season, multiple brood production and higher fecundity rates. Field experiments confirmed previous studies indicating H. sanguineus is a highly mobile crab, and further demonstrated that adult Asian crabs are more likely than mud crabs to disperse from their shelter/refuge sites. Recovery rates for native mud crabs were significantly higher than those for Asian crabs in three experimental trials, across sites and years. This work provides new information about life history characteristics of both species and supports the hypothesis that high reproductive potential combined with high adult dispersal ability may be important factors associated with the invasion/establishment success of the Asian shore crab. More study is needed, however, to determine the applicability of these findings to other highly successful marine invaders.  相似文献

The reproductive parameters are among the most important life history aspects of fishes influenced by environmental variation. During recent years, the main life history strategies of Amazonian fish species were defined mostly by a set of reproductive parameters. In the present work, we sought to describe important life history parameters, in particular on reproductive characteristics of Apistogramma agassizii and Apistogramma bitaeniata, found in floodplain lakes of the Brazilian Amazonia. The species presented a positive sexual dimorphism, and males were significantly bigger than females. For both sexes, four developmental phase of gonad maturation were detected, and based on those it was possible to identify mature, reproductive specimens throughout the entire period of the study. From the ovaries of mature females, fecundity and spawning type were determined. Low fecundity, short spawning periods, possibly separated only by few months, and total spawning are all good indications that A. agassizii and A. bitaeniata evolved an opportunistic strategy in their life history.  相似文献

Numerous bladderwort (Utricularia) species are distributed worldwide, but their reproductive biology is rarely investigated. Bladderworts are known to depend on tiny organisms to meet a significant proportion of their energy requirement by trapping them in bladders. However, information on the extent of their reliance on insects for pollination success is limited. We examined the reproductive strategy of two Utricularia species viz. Utricularia praeterita and U. babui, endemic to Western Ghats, India. The main aspects of the investigation involved floral biology, breeding system, pollination mechanism, and reproductive success. Flowers of both the species are structured for outbreeding through entomophilous floral suites, herkogamy, protandrous dichogamy and sensitive lobes of the stigma. With nearly 65% natural fruit-set, both the species appeared to be sufficiently open-pollinated. However, pollinators failed to show in plants of U. praeterita while in U. babui there was an apparent mismatch between the extent of fruit-set and pollinator visits. The study demonstrated that in the absence/insufficient visits of pollinators, the two species resort to autonomous selfing. In U. babui, denser patches of plants appeared to be crucial for attracting the pollinators. Both species are self-compatible, and reproductive success is predominantly achieved by delayed autonomous selfing. The sensitive stigma in the species fails to prevent selfing due to diminished herkogamy during the late anthetic stages. It is inferred that in the pollinator-limited environment, delayed selfing contributes to absolute natural fecundity in U. praeterita, while it produces a mixed progeny in U. babui.  相似文献

The present study describes the life history of Gymnotus refugio, a species classified as Endangered in the last published list of threatened species of the Brazilian fauna. The study was conducted at a conservation unity that protect one of the last remaining semideciduous forests in the region. The reproductive period was estimated as occurring from the end of winter to the last summer months. Gymnotus refugio exibited fractional spawning, the lowest relative fecundity registered among the Gymnotifomes species studied at the present, and male parental care behavior. The analyses showed a seasonal pattern on the species diet, associating different food categories to winter, autumn, and spring. According to food items analysis and estimated intestinal quotient, G. refugio was classified as invertivorous, feeding mainly on autochthonous insects. The results obtained herein suggest that the position of G. refugio as an Endangered species might be influenced by its territoriality, habitat specificity, parental care behavior, and low fecundity, reinforcing the importance of swampy forest environment conservation as the only means of the species maintenance.  相似文献

The carnivorous marsupial Antechinus are one of the few mammal genera known to exhibit the phenomenon of semelparous reproduction, where all males die at the end of a frenetic annual mating period. The genus Antechinus has recently been revised, seeing four new species named and one existing subspecies raised to species status. Here, we present the first ecological assessment of one new species, the endangered black-tailed dusky antechinus (Antechinus arktos), based on a 2-year mark-recapture study of two proximate sites within the cloud forest of Springbrook National Park, south-east Queensland, Australia. We also present comparative ecological data from a sympatric congener, Antechinus stuartii. In total, 103 A. arktos (49 male; 54 female) and 2125 A. stuartii (1229 male; 896 female) captures were made over 16,630 trap nights at the two sites. The occurrence and synchrony of reproductive events observed in A. arktos closely parallel the semelparous reproductive strategy exhibited by all congeners studied to date. The A. arktos populations mate during mid-September, with birth of up to six young occurring during mid-October. The low abundance and fecundity, together with a limited and apparently retracting distribution, suggest A. arktos is under threat of climate-induced extinction in the coming decades.  相似文献

Reproductive interference occurs when fitness of females of one species decreases because of misdirected courtship behaviors by males of another species. Reproductive interference strongly excludes either species in the interaction but it does not persist for long on an evolutionary time scale. Therefore, reproductive interference between a pair of co-evolved native species is difficult to observe because exclusion ends the interaction even if even the potential for reproductive interference still exists. However, anthropogenic environmental changes can bring about secondary contact between two species and trigger reproductive interference, leading to local species extinction. We demonstrated this phenomenon with two native spined loaches: Cobitis magnostriata (Cmag) and C. minamorii oumiensis (Cmio). In 2015 and 2016, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of adults and juveniles of both species to estimate the effects of the relative abundance of adults on reproductive success. Additionally, we surveyed the distribution of juveniles and investigated the proportion of gravid females which failed to reproduce at the end of the spawning season. In 2016, Cmio juveniles were fewer than in 2015, although the abundances of Cmio adults were similarly low in both years and the Cmag adults were more abundant in 2016 than in 2015. The juveniles of the two species exhibited similar spatiotemporal dynamics. At the end of the spawning season, Cmag males were abundant and most Cmio females failed to reproduce. These results suggest that the two species share spawning habitats and seasons and that Cmag males exert reproductive interference on Cmio females. This report is the first of a study suggesting that anthropogenic environmental changes triggered reproductive interference between native species in the field.  相似文献

Birds exhibit various forms of anti-predator behaviours to avoid reproductive failure, with mobbing—observation, approach and usually harassment of a predator—being one of the most commonly observed. Here, we investigate patterns of temporal variation in the mobbing response exhibited by a precocial species, the northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). We test whether brood age and self-reliance, or the perceived risk posed by various predators, affect mobbing response of lapwings. We quantified aggressive interactions between lapwings and their natural avian predators and used generalized additive models to test how timing and predator species identity are related to the mobbing response of lapwings. Lapwings diversified mobbing response within the breeding season and depending on predator species. Raven Corvus corax, hooded crow Corvus cornix and harriers evoked the strongest response, while common buzzard Buteo buteo, white stork Ciconia ciconia, black-headed gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus and rook Corvus frugilegus were less frequently attacked. Lapwings increased their mobbing response against raven, common buzzard, white stork and rook throughout the breeding season, while defence against hooded crow, harriers and black-headed gull did not exhibit clear temporal patterns. Mobbing behaviour of lapwings apparently constitutes a flexible anti-predator strategy. The anti-predator response depends on predator species, which may suggest that lapwings distinguish between predator types and match mobbing response to the perceived hazard at different stages of the breeding cycle. We conclude that a single species may exhibit various patterns of temporal variation in anti-predator defence, which may correspond with various hypotheses derived from parental investment theory.  相似文献

Clinids of the tribe Clinini are viviparous fishes occurring in the temperate waters of southern Africa. Females of the genus Clinus exhibit reproductive traits suggesting multiple paternity. These traits include prolonged gestation periods, matrotrophy and superfetation. We tested the hypothesis that broods of the species C. cottoides are sired by multiple males with the use of microsatellites. We genotyped three broods from known mothers and analysed the relationships within each brood using the software program COLONY, we also used allele counting to find evidence of multiple paternity. Our results revealed that multiple paternity occurred in all three broods analysed; two broods likely had two sires and one brood three sires. One male appear to have fathered offspring with separate females. Our study represents the first molecular analysis of parentage in C. cottoides.  相似文献

The results of long-term studies of the circadian rhythms of activity in Trigonoscelis gigas and T. sublaevicollis, typical and abundant representatives of the tenebrionid fauna in the Kara Kum desert are given. T. gigas and T. sublaevicollis are omni-seasonal species: their adults are observed on the sand surface from spring till late autumn. They spend their resting period in soil. Adults of both species are similar in morphology, ecology, and behavior, strongly differing in the circadian rhythm pattern. T. gigas are active only at twilight, whereas T. sublaevicollis are characterized by nocturnal activity. Therefore, inhabiting the same habitat, T. gigas and T. sublaevicollis never meet each other under natural conditions, independently of the season and weather. Hence, the circadian rhythm of activity can serve as a reliable mechanism of reproductive isolation in closely related tenebrionid species.  相似文献

Members of Oncidiinae are widely known for their interactions with oil-collecting bees that explore lipophilic secretions on flowers. They may also be pollinated through food deception and the offering of nectar. Although data on breeding systems are available for many Oncidiinae orchids, little is known about the reproductive strategies in Rodriguezia, a neotropical genus of ca. 55 species. In this paper, we explore the reproductive biology of two species of Rodriguezia with distinctive morphologies: R. decora and R. lanceolata. Floral features, spectral reflectance, pollinators and pollination mechanisms, and breeding systems were studied. Both species are scentless and produce nectar as a reward. Floral nectar is secreted by a gland at the base of the labellum and stored into the sepaline spur. Rodriguezia decora reflects mainly in the blue and red regions of the light spectrum, while R. lanceolata reflects in the red region. Rodriguezia decora is exclusively visited and pollinated by butterflies, while Trochilidae hummingbirds are the pollinators of R. lanceolata. Pollinaria attach to the upper third of the proboscis of butterflies (R. decora), and to the bill of hummingbirds (R. lanceolata), during the collection of nectar from the spur. Both Rodriguezia species are self-sterile. Flower features and floral reflectance support the occurrence of psychophily in R. decora and ornithophily in R. lanceolata.  相似文献

Capital breeding species, those that do not acquire resources over their reproductive period, are hypothesized to have more flexible reproductive strategies than income breeding species, enabling the former to better cope with environmental changes. Yet, empirical study of this life history attribute in a changing environment is rare. Hemileuca eglanterina (Saturniidae), a strict capital breeding, day-flying moth, should employ a different reproductive strategy to exploit temporary increases in host plant nutrient quality following fire. In wetlands, where one half was burned and the other left unburned, the number of eggs/clutch was positively correlated with host plant abundance in the absence of fire, suggesting that H. eglanterina uses a resource abundance matching reproductive strategy by default. However, following fire, H. eglanterina laid greater numbers of eggs/clutch and did not adjust clutch size to host plant abundance, appearing to shift to a host plant quality based reproductive strategy. Coinciding with the fire-induced shift in reproductive strategy, host plants from burned habitat contained a greater proportion of N-containing compounds in their foliage than plants from unburned habitat, and larvae fed only leaves from the burned habitat had significantly greater survival than siblings fed unburned foliage. These results suggest the shift in reproductive strategy by H. eglanterina following fire was adaptive and that capital breeding species can cope with sudden environmental changes via alternative reproductive strategies.  相似文献

The success of an invasive plant species could be explained by trade-off between growth and defence. The aim of this paper was to explore the responses of two non-native aquatic macrophytes Elodea canadensis and Elodea nuttallii to herbivores in their introduced range. We assessed the palatability of the two phylogenetically close aquatic plant species in field and their responses to gammarid consumption in spring, summer and autumn in a microcosm experiment. We measured the variation of functional traits for each season. The traits selected were those judged most closely related to the allocation of resources to growth or to resistance against herbivores. We clearly established that the strategies of the two species were different and that their consumption rate differed in summer. In summer, E. canadensis allocated more of its resources to structural defence (leaf toughness). The increase in leaf thickness reduced the palatability of E. canadensis, whereas E. nuttallii stimulated its growth. Moreover, a decrease in dry matter content in E. nuttallii was found during the growing season in field. In autumn, both plant species accumulated nitrogen and phosphorus in their tissues. We also demonstrated that neither species induced efficient chemical defences against the herbivores. The different strategies of these two Elodea species could be explained by their different resident times in the introduced area and by an adaptation of the naturalised E. canadensis to herbivores.  相似文献

Pollination ecology and breeding system of Lilium pomponium L. were studied, and their effect on the reproductive outcome was assessed. This species has high conservation interest in Europe, because it is included in Annex V of the EU Habitat Directive and it is one out of the five Lilium species listed in IUCN Global Red List. To achieve our aim, the pollen vectors as well as the effect of bagging, emasculation and artificial pollination on reproductive output were studied. The most frequent visitor was the Lepidopteran Gonepteryx rhamnii. In general, reproductive outputs were close to zero for all the self-pollination treatments; however, geitonogamy and facilitated selfing seem slightly more efficient than autogamy, as also confirmed by self-compatibility and autofertility indices. Altogether, our results suggest a self-incompatible outcrossing breeding system, with a poor capacity for selfing. Nevertheless, climate change and anthropic threats might promote a shift toward self-fertilization, even maladaptive, favouring the few individuals able to produce selfed seeds.  相似文献

Plasticity in plants could be changed due to abiotic factors, tending to increase fitness across environments. In the Neotropical savannah, a strong water deficit during the dry season is one of the main factors limiting the plasticity in physiological responses of plants. The present study aims to assess the plasticity in physiological responses and vegetative phenology of three plant species of the Neotropical savannah (Cerrado in Brazil) during the dry and the rainy seasons. The three species, Byrsonima verbascifolia, Roupala montana, and Solanum lycocarpum, occur in Serra do Cipó in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The development and vegetative phenology of individuals of these three species were evaluated over the course of 1 year. In February 2012 (rainy season) and August 2012 (dry season), stomatal conductance (g s), water potential (Ψ), photosynthetic quantum yield, and concentration of leaf photosynthetic pigments were measured. The relative distance among the physiological parameters of all individuals within each season was measured using the relative distance plasticity index. B. verbascifolia has pronounced senescence in July and lost leaves completely by the early September, while R. montana and S. lycocarpum have green leaves throughout the year. The three studied species had greater control of stomatal opening during the dry season. S. lycocarpum and R. montana had negative water potential values in the dry season and in the middle of the day in both seasons. In the dry season, the three species exhibited a decrease in F v/F m, with values between 0.7 and 0.75. The relative distance plasticity index varied from 0 to 1. R. montana demonstrated the greatest plasticity and S. lycocarpum had lower plasticity. Then, a seasonal effect on physiological response was observed in all three model-species, with lower values for leaf water potential and stomatal conductance, and increased photoinhibition, in the dry season. Ecophysiological traits, such as stomatal conductance and leaf water potential, exhibited the greatest plasticity. In addition, there was a seasonal effect on the plasticity in physiological responses of the three plants species of the Neotropical savannah. The results are contradicting the idea that water restriction in the dry season would reduce the plasticity in most species of the Neotropical savannah.  相似文献

Successive generations of bi- and multivoltine species encounter differing biotic and abiotic environments intra-annually. The question of whether selection can independently adjust the relationship between body size and components of reproductive effort within successive generations in response to generation-specific environmental variation is applicable to a diversity of taxa. Herein, we develop a conceptual framework that illustrates increasingly independent life history adjustments between successive generations of taxa exhibiting complex life cycles. We apply this framework to the reproductive biology of the gall-forming insect, Belonocnema treatae (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). This bivoltine species expresses cyclical parthenogenesis in which alternating sexual and asexual generations develop in different seasons and different environments. We tested the hypotheses that ecological divergence between the alternate generations is accompanied by generational differences in body size, egg size, and egg number and by changes in the relationships between body size and these components of reproductive effort. Increased potential reproductive effort of sexual generation B. treatae is attained by increased body size and egg number (with no trade-off between egg number and egg size) and by a significant increase in the slope of the relationship between body size and potential fecundity. These generation-specific relationships, interpreted in the context of the model framework, suggest that within each generation selection has independently molded the relationships relating body size to potential fecundity and potential reproductive effort in B. treatae. The conceptual framework is broadly applicable to comparisons involving the alternating generations of bi- and multivoltine species.  相似文献

We conducted a year-round mesozooplankton study in the Arctic Kongsfjord from August 1998 until July 1999 to investigate seasonal abundance and vertical as well as stage distributions of the prevalent taxa. It is the first investigation in Kongsfjord that covers the Arctic winter season and provides reasonable estimates also of small-sized copepod species. Abundant smaller copepods comprised Oithona similis, Pseudocalanus minutus, Microcalanus spp., Triconia borealis and Acartia longiremis. Among the larger copepods, Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus and Metridia longa dominated. The thecosome pteropod Limacina helicina was also an important component. Abundance maxima occurred in November (988,669 ind. m?2) with one to two orders of magnitude higher numbers as compared to all other months (39,832–200,067 ind. m?2). The summers of 1998 and 1999 were characterized by intrusions of Atlantic water, but the community was not entirely dominated by advected boreal species. During winter, the majority of the mesozooplankton occurred below 100 m. Advection is the most likely reason for the accumulation of zooplankton at depth in winter, but local production may also contribute to high overwintering numbers. Much lower abundances of most species in spring suggest high winter mortality and emphasize the importance of sufficient reproductive success during the previous summer to ensure enough winter survivors as seed stock for the coming reproductive season. This study was conducted prior to the recent warming trend in the Arctic. Therefore, it provides valuable baseline data and allows comparing present and future states of the zooplankton community in Kongsfjord.  相似文献

Antechinus are one of just a few mammal genera worldwide which exhibit semelparous reproduction. Consequently, the life history of many antechinus has been well studied. However, in the last few years, several new species have been described in the genus and their ecology is little known. Here, the first multi-year ecological study of breeding, growth and movement in one of these species, the buff-footed antechinus, Antechinus mysticus, was undertaken. Over a 2-year period, monthly capture-mark-recapture data from two geographically close sites (~2.5 km apart) in south-east Queensland, Australia, were collected. At one site, the subtropical antechinus, Antechinus subtropicus, also occurred. This allowed the investigation of possible competitive effects between this larger Antechinus species and A. mysticus. Intensive trapping across the breeding season of A. mysticus also allowed the growth rates of pouch young of a wild antechinus population to be calculated for the first time. Results showed that A. mysticus followed the synchronous, semelparous breeding strategy seen in all congeners. Male A. mysticus were last caught in August, and females gave birth in September. Average distance moved by A. mysticus was comparable with congeners. Competition with A. subtropicus may affect A. mysticus because A. mysticus weighed more and males moved further when not in sympatry with A. subtropicus. However, female A. mysticus moved further when in sympatry with A. subtropicus, confounding clear interpretation. Overall, the life history information obtained for A. mysticus provides a foundation for further research and will aid the conservation management of this new species.  相似文献

Life histories can reveal important information on the performance of individuals within their environment and how that affects evolutionary change. Major trait changes, such as trait decay or loss, may lead to pronounced differences in life history strategies when tight correlations between traits exist. Here, we show that three congeneric hyperparasitoids (Gelis agilis, Gelis acarorum and Gelis areator) that have diverged in wing development and reproductive mode employ markedly different life history strategies. Potential fecundity of Gelis sp. varied, with the wingless G. acarorum maturing a much higher number of eggs throughout life compared with the other two species. Realized lifetime fecundity, in terms of total offspring number was, however, highest for the winged G. areator. The parthenogenic G. agilis invests its resources solely in females, whilst the sexually reproducing species both invested heavily in males to reduce competitive pressures for their female offspring. Longevity also differed between species, as did the direction of the reproduction-longevity trade-off, where reproduction is heavily traded off against longevity only in the asexual G. agilis. Resting metabolic rates also differed between the winged and wingless species, with the highest metabolic rate observed in the winged G. areator. Overall, these geline hyperparasitoids showed considerable divergence in life history strategies, both in terms of timing and investment patterns. Major trait changes observed between closely related species, such as the loss of wings and sexual reproduction, may contribute to the divergence in key life history traits.  相似文献

In wheat seeds, starch synthase I or the Waxy protein is an enzyme involved in amylose synthesis. The gene encoding this enzyme is Wx and in this study, eight novel Wx alleles were identified in three diploid Taeniatherum species. The variability of these alleles was evaluated, and their nucleotide sequences were compared with those of homologous alleles from wheat. Two types of Taeniatherum Wx alleles were detected in three diploid species Ta. caput-medusae, Ta. asperum, and Ta. crinitum. A phylogenetic analysis indicates that the Taeniatherum Wx alleles were more closely related to Wx alleles from Aegilops species with C, D, M, and U genomes than to Wx alleles of other species. These alleles represent a potential genetic resource that may be useful in wheat breeding programs.  相似文献
