As human pressure on the marine environment increases, safeguarding healthy and productive seas increasingly necessitates integrated, time- and cost-effective environmental monitoring. Employment of a Wave Glider proved very useful for the study of sediment transport in a shallow sandbank area in the Belgian part of the North Sea. During 22 days, data on surface and water-column currents and turbidity were recorded along 39 loops around an aggregate-extraction site. Correlation with wave and tidal-amplitude data allowed the quantification of current- and wave-induced advection and resuspension, important background information to assess dredging impacts. Important anomalies in suspended particulate matter concentrations in the water column suggested dredging-induced overflow of sediments in the near field (i.e., dynamic plume), and settling of finer-grained material in the far field (i.e., passive plume). Capturing the latter is a successful outcome to this experiment, since the location of dispersion and settling of a passive plume is highly dependent on the ruling hydro-meteorological conditions and thus difficult to predict. Deposition of the observed sediment plumes may cause habitat changes in the long-term.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of fishing effort are necessary in order to assess interactions with the wider ecosystem and for defining and implementing appropriate management. In intertidal and inshore fisheries in which vessel monitoring systems (VMS) or logbook programmes may not be implemented, quantifying the distribution and intensity of fishing can be difficult. The most obvious effects of bottom-contact fishing are often physical changes to the habitat, such as scarring of the sediment following dredging or trawling. We explored the potential of applying remote sensing techniques to aerial imagery collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone, in an area of intertidal mud flat (0.52 km2) in Poole Harbour, UK, where shellfish dredging is widely carried out and conflicts between commercial fishing interests and the conservation of internationally important shorebird populations are a concern. Image classification and image texture analysis were performed on imagery collected during the open dredge season in November 2015, in order to calculate measures of fishing intensity across three areas of the harbour subject to different management measures. We found a significant correlation between results of the image texture analysis and official sightings records collected during the dredging season, indicating that this method most accurately quantified dredging disturbance. The relationship between shorebird densities and food intake rates and the results of this analysis method were then investigated to assess the potential for using remotely sensed measures of fishing effort to assess responses of overwintering shorebird populations to intertidal shellfish dredging. Our work highlights the application of such methods, providing a low-cost tool for quantifying fishing effort and predicting wildlife conflicts.  相似文献

The Tamar Estuary, S.W. England, is a commercial and military port and the site of a major naval dockyard. Parts of the estuary require regular maintenance dredging and some capital dredging has been undertaken. The estuary is also assigned Special Area of Conservation (SAC) status under the European Habitats Directive and is an important site for migrating wildfowl and wading birds. As part of an assessment undertaken for a consortium of the port operators and regulatory authorities, we have analysed the ecological, physical, chemical and socio-economic impacts of dredging on the Tamar Estuary ecosystem. This paper focuses on the physical changes through the analysis of historical survey data and the use of hydrodynamic modelling. The objective was to evaluate whether dredging has influenced the estuary morphology or hydrodynamic regime and thus impacted on the ecological habitat. Bathymetric survey data collected between 1895 and 1968 were compared with multi-beam echo sounder data obtained in 2001. The paper survey records were digitised, geo-referenced and adjusted to the modern datum and units. The accuracy and limitations of this approach are discussed. Both sets of data were contoured and analysed using a GIS package. Comparisons between 1895 and 2001 hydraulics were made using a 1-D hydrodynamic and sediment transport model set up for the bathymetry at those times but ‘driven’ using a single, common, year-long data set for tides and river flows. The results suggest that although the deep channel in the region that is mainly south of the Tamar road bridge, is on average 0.5 m deeper in 2001 than it was in 1895, this has had a negligible effect on the area of intertidal mud and, thus, on habitat available for wading birds, and minimal impact on the large-scale hydrodynamics of the estuary.  相似文献

Dredging Austrian Danube harbours becomes necessary to keep the navigation channel free from bed sediment and to insure safe navigation, especially after major floods. In most cases, the excavated substrate is deposited in the free-flowing river section in the vicinity of the mouth of a harbour. The effects of harbour dredging on the biota need to be studied to minimize possible outcomes that may endanger the ecological status of the river system in order to implement the aims of the European Water Framework Directive. This study presents the first quantitative information on the colonisation of benthic invertebrates with respect to Danube harbours. One sampling at Linz Harbour was conducted before dredging and four samplings were carried out after dredging. Four transects were documented in the affected river section. The study used an air-lift sampler and a grab sampler to investigate if and to what extent the benthic invertebrate community is disturbed. It found that the sediment dredging heavily affected the benthic invertebrates (decline of 82% of biomass), while the dumping of the material had no effects on the benthic Danube biota. As a rough estimate (conferring to a simple trend line analysis) the harbour bottom fauna would recover after 235 days.  相似文献

The Upper Mississippi River system has been modified with locks, dams, dikes, bank revetments, channel modifications, and dredging to provide a nine-foot navigation channel. These activities have changed the river's characteristics. The historical changes in the hydrologic, hydraulic, and geomorphic characteristics were assessed and related to navigational development and maintenance activities in the Upper Mississippi River system. The hydrologic, hydraulic, and geomorphic features studied include river discharges, stages, sediment transport, river position, river surface area, island surface area, and river bed elevation. Water and sediment transport effects on dredging were also estimated. It was found that the general position of the Upper Mississippi River system has remained essentially unchanged in the last 150 years except for specific man-made developments in the river basin. The stage, velocity, sediment transport, and river and island areas were altered by development of the 2.75-m navigation system. Dredging requirements are strongly related to mean annual water discharge. Years in which water discharges were great were generally the years during which large volumes of sediment needed to be dredged from the channel. The backwater areas are experiencing some deposition. With implementation of erosion-control measures in major tributaries and upland areas, better confinement of disposed dredged materials, and better maintenance practices, the sedimentation and pertinent problems in the main channel, as well as in the backwater areas, may be reduced with time.  相似文献

Delays in dredging and inability to dredge the nation's harbors, due to the presence of contaminated sediments and the lack of environmentally acceptable disposal sites are interfering with shipping activities and hampering trade growth. The United States Government is committed to provide continuing support to the port industry's goals for enhancing economic growth while protecting, conserving and restoring natural resources within coastal aquatic lands. The government's commitment has resulted in the articulation of a national dredging policy in the Action Plan for Improvement of the Dredging Process in the United States. This national challenge calls for a systematic and consistent decision making approach to dredging and disposal including contaminated sediment management. In building an effective decision mak ing framework for costs, risk reduction and potential beneficial uses of the disposal material must be considered in identifying and evaluating environmentally acceptable and cost-effective disposal alternatives. A conceptual framework for applying a risk-cost trade off approach in making decisions regarding contaminated sediment disposal is presented and applied to a hypothetical disposal scenario involving three alternatives: deepwater confined disposal, nearshore fill or capping and, upland disposal. The approach entails the performance of sequential evaluations consisting of risk analysis, estimation of costs, integration of the results into a computational framework for trade-off analysis, and the application of decision analytical tools to build consensus among stakeholders and the general public in selecting a preferred alternative.  相似文献

Habitat modelling has become an increasingly important tool in river sciences to evaluate impacts on running waters and to predict the effects of river restoration in the context of the European Water Framework Directive which aims to reach a good ecological status by 2015. In a scaling framework like the River Scaling Concept, micro- and mesoscale habitat modelling hierarchically integrate point-/local-scale abiotic processes like grain sorting, initiation of sediment transport, bedform development and braiding with biological processes like spawning, daily and seasonal movements, feeding and shifting to refuge habitats. The paper, along with application results, shows that micro- and mesoscale habitat models are complementary especially for large river systems. Overall possibilities, restrictions and future development are discussed. Both rely on dynamic abiotic modelling as a basis as well as on biological data. In future, especially for large rivers, habitat modelling should be addressed on both scales (micro-/meso-) with the main focus on site-specific efficiencies (e.g. minimum efforts) and uncertainties (e.g. transferring suitability indices).  相似文献

The results of integrated multidisciplinary studies of the transport and pathways of toxic contaminants entering Lake Ontario through the Niagara River are summarized. The factors controlling the transport and distribution of contaminants are: (i) Niagara River mixing characteristics; (ii) prevailing local wind conditions and large scale lake-wide circulation features, and (iii) suspended sediment load and the partitioning of the contaminants onto the suspended solids. Physical limnological studies included a variety of direct measurements to delineate the nearfield and farfield mixing characteristics of the river plume in terms of the prevailing winds and large scale lake circulation. In the nearfield region of the plume, around the river mouth, contaminant transport was affected by the initial momentum and buoyancy of the river water mass and a sharp thermal front that is generally present through the stratified season. After the initial momentum is dissipated, the weakly buoyant river plume responds to the prevailing winds and lake-wide circulation. Adsorbed contaminants rapidly settle once the initial momentum of the river plume is dissipated but the dissolved contaminants are transported into the farfield regions in the lake and after becoming entrained in the strong south shore eastward flowing boundary current are carried toward the St. Lawrence River outflow. Only about ten percent of this eastward flowing transport exits via the St. Lawrence River, the remainder is recirculated back into the main lake. A contaminant transport model of the Niagara River Plume incorporating a hydrodynamic model, observed plume mixing characteristics and chemical partitioning was used to simulate the compartmental distribution (adsorbed vs dissolved) of selected toxic chemicals distribution observed in the nearfield region of the plume.  相似文献

During an open-water disposal of about 710,000 m3 of harbour sludge in the polyhaline zone of the Weser estuary, Germany, a monitoring programme was carried out to investigate the impact on benthic invertebrates. The macrofaunal communities of four sites within the disposal area and five sites in a reference area were compared after discharge. The location and extent of the potentially affected area were inferred from a morphodynamic computer model (TIMOR 3; Zanke 1998). Disposal effects were analysed by comparing species numbers, densities, diversity and faunal similarity using multivariate methods. A loss of diversity and a decline in the abundance of several species in the disposal area were measured. The species number was reduced up to 50% and important habitat structures were absent from the disposal area. Several benthic species were affected by the disposal. The importance of species such as Mytilus edulis (Mollusca) and Lanice conchilega (Polychaeta) for the diversity of the community, and the sensitivity of these species to sediment discharge are analysed. The difficulties of separating dumping effects from natural variation in a dynamic estuarine channel system are discussed.Communicated by H.-D. Franke  相似文献

Lake circulation and sediment transport in Lake Myvatn have been calculated using AQUASEA, a numerical model developed by Vatnaskil Consulting Engineers. The goal of the modelling was to calculate changes in sediment transport within the lake due to changes in lake bathymetry caused by diatomite mining. The model uses the Galerkin finite element method and consists of a hydrodynamic flow model and a transport-dispersion model. The flow model is based on the shallow water equations and the wave equation. The transport model is based on the conservation of mass for suspended sediment. The model was calibrated against measurements performed during the summer of 1992. These included measurements of water elevation, current velocity, wave height, and concentration of suspended sediment. After calibration, the model was run for different mining scenarios to determine their impact on the sediment transport in the lake.  相似文献

Many years of uncontrolled discharge of sewage and industrial effluent have resulted in serious contamination of much of the sediments underlying inland and nearshore coastal waters in Hong Kong by potentially toxic heavy metal and trace organic pollutants. Much has been achieved to improve control of this pollution at the source and prevent further deterioration. Nevertheless, comprehensive environmental assessment and management measures are required to ensure that any unacceptably contaminated sediment that must be dredged to facilitate infrastructural development is safely handled and disposed of. It is estimated that some 50?Mm3 of sediment classified as unacceptably contaminated may require dredging and special management elsewhere over the coming 10-year period. To facilitate improved decision making about the most appropriate disposal options for dredged sediment Hong Kong has recently implemented a new sediment quality assessment framework under which information on the biological activity of contaminated material is considered in addition to data on chemical composition. Dredged sediment classified as unacceptably contaminated has been disposed of at a contained disposal facility at East Sha Chau since 1992. To date over 20?Mm3 of sediment has been placed into seabed pits that are subsequently capped with clay. The site is subject to a rigorous monitoring programme that has clearly demonstrated its environmental acceptability.  相似文献

采砂是一项具有巨大生态影响的经济活动.利用多源遥感影像描述鄱阳湖中部的采砂分布,分析其对悬浮泥沙浓度的影响.2011年7月28日的Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM)5用于采砂相关船只的识别,2009-2011年7-8月的Terra卫星中分辨率成像光谱仪(MODIS)影像用于悬浮泥沙浓度的反演,(Before-after-control-impact,BACI)方法用于采砂影响评价.Landsat TM 5影像解译结果发现鄱阳湖中部的两个采砂区和90余艘船只,MODIS Terra反演结果显示在采砂区及其下游区域悬浮泥沙浓度剧增,BACI评价结果揭示采砂是导致此区域悬浮泥沙浓度增加的主要因素.平衡经济发展与生态保护之间的关系,将因采砂而造成的负面影响降到最低,使鄱阳湖的各种生态功能全面发挥是紧要的.  相似文献

河道综合整治已引起人们广泛关注。综述了国内外河道治理常用的物理、化学和生物等方法的原理和工艺。物理法介绍了调水、机械除藻、底泥疏浚等,该法治标不治本;化学法有混凝沉淀,它易造成产生二次污染;生态-生物法是国外近年来发展很快的,借助自然界自身的水体自净能力治理受污水体的一类新技术,包括河道曝气法、生物膜法、生物修复技术,土地处理法等。同时也介绍了目前发展起来的最新河道治理工艺,如悬浮填料移动床、曝气生态净化系统和底泥生物氧化等多种方法,这类工艺是将生物法与其他工艺相结合,具有多功能、高效率等特点。  相似文献

The high oil dependence and the growth of energy use in the transport sector have increased the interest in alternative nonfossil fuels as a measure to mitigate climate change and improve energy security. More ambitious energy and environmental targets and larger use of nonfossil energy in the transport sector increase energy–transport interactions and system effects over sector boundaries. While the stationary energy sector (e.g., electricity and heat generation) and the transport sector earlier to large degree could be considered as separate systems with limited interaction, integrated analysis approaches and assessments of energy–transport interactions now grow in importance. In recent years, the scientific literature has presented an increasing number of global energy–economy future studies based on systems modelling treating the transport sector as an integral part of the overall energy system and/or economy. Many of these studies provide important insights regarding transport biofuels. To clarify similarities and differences in approaches and results, the present work reviews studies on transport biofuels in global energy–economy modelling and investigates what future role comprehensive global energy–economy modelling studies portray for transport biofuels in terms of their potential and competitiveness. The results vary widely between the studies, but the resulting transport biofuel market shares are mainly below 40% during the entire time periods analysed. Some of the reviewed studies show higher transport biofuel market shares in the medium (15–30 years) than in the long term (above 30 years), and, in the long‐term models, at the end of the modelling horizon, transport biofuels are often substituted by electric and hydrogen cars.  相似文献

To help define the habitat of modern marine stromatolites, wave-dominated flow and sediment transport were studied in the shallow subtidal region (1-2 m depth) along the slightly concave, windward face of Highborne Cay, Exuma, Bahamas - the only face of the cay that includes a population of stromatolites concentrated near the region of highest curvature of the beach. Wave energy impacting this island's most exposed beach was driven by local wind forcing which increases largely in response to the passage of atmospheric disturbances that typically affect the region for periods of a few days. Although some wave energy is almost always noted (maximum horizontal orbital speeds at the bottom are rarely <10 cm s(-1)), wave conditions remain comparatively calm until local winds increase above speeds of approximately 3-4 m s(-1) at which point maximum wave speeds rapidly increase to 50-80 cm s(-1). Stromatolites, which are largely restricted to the shoreward side of a shallow platform reef, are sheltered by the reef beyond which wave speeds are one to four times higher (depending on tidal stage). Moreover, stromatolite populations are predominantly found along a region of this wave-exposed beach that experiences comparatively reduced wave energy because of the curved morphology of the island's face. Maximum wave speeds are 1.4 to 2 times higher along more northern sections of the beach just beyond the locus of stromatolite populations. A quantitative model of sediment transport was developed that accurately predicted accumulation of suspended sediment in sediment traps deployed in the shallow subtidal zone along this beach. This model, coupled with in situ wave records, indicates that gross rates of suspended sediment deposition should be two to three times higher northward of the main stromatolite populations. Regions of the beach containing stromatolites nevertheless should experience significant rates of gross suspended sediment deposition averaging 7-10 g cm(-2) day(-1) ( approximately 4-6 cm day(-1)). Results suggest that one axis of the habitat of modern marine stromatolites may be defined by a comparatively narrow range of flow energy and sediment transport conditions.  相似文献

In shallow, wind exposed lakes, the light conditions, the cycling of nutrients, heavy metals and organic micro-pollutants and changes in the local composition of the sediment top layer can be dominated by resuspension/erosion of bottom sediment and sedimentation of suspended solids. A 2 dimensional model for Sediment Transport, Resuspension and Sedimentation in Shallow lakes (STRESS-2d), based on an existing transport model, is discussed. In the model, mass balance equations for the water compartment and the bottom sediment are solved numerically. Up to 7 sediment fractions can be taken into account, each having a specific set of resuspension/erosion and sedimentation parameter values. Several options for modelling the changes in the bottom sediment composition are available.A simulation experiment for Lake Veluwe (The Netherlands), in which model options with and without the distinction of sediment fractions were used, showed that using sediment fractions to account for the variability in the sediment composition leads to an improvement of the model results, particularly the simulated phosphorus sediment-water exchange fluxes. For Lake Ketel (The Netherlands) two options for modelling changes in the bottom sediment composition are compared. It is shown that an option in which a thin water-sediment layer on top of the more consolidated bottom sediment is simulated provides an improvement in the simulation of the suspended solids concentration.  相似文献

Suspended sediment budget dynamics for a 55 km reach of the lowland River Swale, Yorkshire, U.K. are investigated for the period October 1994 to June 1995. Particular attention is paid to 11 storm events occurring between October 1994 and April 1995. Each of these storms produced significant suspended sediment transport. Variations in sediment dynamics, for example suspended sediment concentrations, hysteresis patterns and storm peak lag times through events and between the upstream and downstream ends of the reach are examined. Net sediment loss from the reach occurred during the extremely wet four month winter period from December 1994 to April 1995. Patterns of reach sediment storage are concluded to represent a combination of channel bed erosion and/or deposition, bank erosion and floodplain deposition. The implications of these patterns for sediment modelling are discussed.  相似文献

With the advent of new technologies, animal locations are being collected at ever finer spatio-temporal scales. We review analytical methods for dealing with correlated data in the context of resource selection, including post hoc variance inflation techniques, ‘two-stage’ approaches based on models fit to each individual, generalized estimating equations and hierarchical mixed-effects models. These methods are applicable to a wide range of correlated data problems, but can be difficult to apply and remain especially challenging for use–availability sampling designs because the correlation structure for combinations of used and available points are not likely to follow common parametric forms. We also review emerging approaches to studying habitat selection that use fine-scale temporal data to arrive at biologically based definitions of available habitat, while naturally accounting for autocorrelation by modelling animal movement between telemetry locations. Sophisticated analyses that explicitly model correlation rather than consider it a nuisance, like mixed effects and state-space models, offer potentially novel insights into the process of resource selection, but additional work is needed to make them more generally applicable to large datasets based on the use–availability designs. Until then, variance inflation techniques and two-stage approaches should offer pragmatic and flexible approaches to modelling correlated data.  相似文献

The association of many environmentally sensitive chemicals and their transformation products with mineral and organic substrates is of considerable importance for environmental monitoring, prediction and management purposes in rivers and their basins. Our understanding of these relationships is poor. This paper reviews processes of particular concern, including the physical behaviour of fine-grained (< 63 µm) sediment in freshwater; the role of flocculation as a transport vector; the processes that control freshwater flocculation including microbiological factors; the uncertainty in conventional sediment transport models for predicting pathways of sediment-associated chemistry; the relationship between suspended sediment and toxicity in the water column; and the partitioning of chemicals between the sediment, organic and water phase, including the significance of these in predicting chemical transport on suspended matter.  相似文献
