Football helmet certification tests are performed without a facemask attached to the helmet; however, the facemask is expected to contribute substantially to the structure and dynamics of the helmet through the effects of added mass and added stiffness. Facemasks may increase the peak acceleration and severity index; therefore, as-used helmets may not mitigate head impacts as effectively as certification tests indicate. Furthermore, the effect is expected to depend on the helmet design as well as the orientation and speed of the impact. This study examined the influence of the facemask on impact behavior in a NOCSAE-style linear drop test and the interactions with location, velocity, and helmet model. Increases in peak acceleration and severity index of up to 36% were observed when helmets were tested with the facemask.  相似文献

Abstract

Sporting helmets with linear attenuating strategies are proficient at reducing the risk of traumatic brain injury. However, the continued high incidence of concussion in American football, has led researchers to investigate novel helmet liner strategies. These strategies typically supplement existing technologies by adding or integrating head-helmet decoupling mechanisms. Decoupling strategies aim to redirect or redistribute impact force around the head, reducing impact energy transferred to the brain. This results in decreased brain tissue strain, which is beneficial in injury risk reduction due to the link between tissue strain and concussive injury.

The purpose of this study was to mathematically demonstrate the effect of ten cases, representing theoretical redirection and redistribution helmet liner strategies, on brain tissue strain resulting from impacts to the head. The kinematic response data from twenty head impacts collected in the laboratory was mathematically modified to represent the altered response of the ten different cases and used as input parameters to determine the effect on maximum principal strain (MPS) values, calculated using finite element modeling. The results showed that a reduced dominant coordinate component (contributes the greatest to resultant) of rotational acceleration decreased maximum principal strain in American football helmets. The study theoretically demonstrates that liner strategies, if applied correctly, can influence brain motion, reduce brain tissue strain, and could decrease injury risk in an American football helmet.  相似文献

Quasi-experimental impact evaluation approaches, which enable scholars to disentangle effects of conservation interventions from broader changes in the environment, are gaining momentum in the conservation sector. However, rigorous impact evaluation using statistical matching techniques to estimate the counterfactual have yet to be applied to marine protected areas (MPAs). While there are numerous studies investigating ‘impacts’ of MPAs that have generated considerable insights, results are variable. This variation has been linked to the biophysical and social context in which they are established, as well as attributes of management and governance. To inform decisions about MPA placement, design and implementation, we need to expand our understanding of conditions under which MPAs are likely to lead to positive outcomes by embracing advances in impact evaluation methodologies. Here, we describe the integration of impact evaluation within an MPA network monitoring programme in the Bird''s Head Seascape, Indonesia. Specifically we (i) highlight the challenges of implementation ‘on the ground’ and in marine ecosystems and (ii) describe the transformation of an existing monitoring programme into a design appropriate for impact evaluation. This study offers one potential model for mainstreaming impact evaluation in the conservation sector.  相似文献

The impact of dredging on macrobenthic communities was studied in an unaltered zone, the Getares inlet of Algeciras Bay (SW Spain). The data obtained before, during and after dredging in a time series spanning 5 years revealed the re-establishment of directly affected communities and of physicochemical substrate characteristics within 1 month of the end of dredging, although 2 years later there was a confusing biological impoverishment of the whole inlet. After 4 years, there was a high degree of population re-establishment, both on the bottoms directly affected by the works and on neighbouring areas, that was partly due to the hydrodynamic conditions. Before this type of activity is undertaken, each case should be studied regarding viability, the environmental medium where it will take place, the best time of year, and the type of dredging to be used.Communicated by H.-D. AIM: To study the effect of a single impact on the structure and mechanical properties of cartilage. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Osteochondral plugs harvested from bovine femora were subjected each to a single impact using an in-house designed drop-tower. Impact masses of different values were released from different drop heights in selected combinations to apply stresses at strain rates and impact energies within specific ranges. Changes in the storage and loss moduli were estimated from cyclic compressive loading test undertaken before and after impact. The conditions of these tests were set to those occurring during walking and running. The extent of the damage on cartilage surface and depth was assessed using optical and confocal microscopy. RESULTS: The storage modulus varied slightly at level walking and running after performing impact tests up to the impact energy of 0.736 J. However, the decrease in the storage modulus was considerable at the impact energy of 1.962 J for test conditions representing both walking and running. This impact energy resulted in strain rate of 1500 s(-1), stress of 25 MPa and energy absorbed per unit volume of 12.79 mJ/mm(3). After impact the loss modulus increased over the loading cycles at all energies. Severe fissures were observed across the cartilage surface and through its thickness at levels of impact energy equal or greater than 1.472 J. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified thresholds for the strain rate, impact stress and impact energy, which caused permanent changes in the mechanical properties and damage to structure of cartilage.  相似文献

Background

IMRT provides highly conformal dose distributions creating non uniform spatial intensity using different segments in the beam.

Material & Methods and Results

Different retrospective studies have shown a high capability of IMRT to treat tumours close to the base of skull. Prospective studies have shown a decrease in xerostomia compared with conventional 3D conformal treatment (3DCRT). Modulation of intensity is performed by the movement of the multileaf collimator (MLC) that can deliver the radiation in different ways, such as static field segments, dynamic field segments and rotational delivery (arc therapy and tomotherapy). There are slight differences among the different techniques in terms of homogeneity, dose conformity and treatment delivery time.

Conclusions

The best method to deliver IMRT will depend on multiple factors such as deliverability, practicality, user training and plan quality.  相似文献

本文研究天然次生林采伐迹地的三种更新方式对林地植被及土壤性状的影响。结果表明,炼山人工造林对林地植被和土壤有一定的破坏作用,是影响林木生长、导致物种丧失、引起林地水土流失和地力衰退的重要原因。不同林分物种丰富度为:天然更新 >人促更新 >炼山人工造林;林下植被生物量为:人促更新 >天然更新 >炼山人工造林。不炼山的天然更新和人促更新,有利于物种多样性保护、植被生长、林地土壤理化性状改善和土壤肥力提高,并具有更高的经济效益。  相似文献

An accurate molecular characterization, molar mass and size distributions, of 10 hyaluronan (HA) samples was performed by using a multi-angle light scattering detector connected on-line to a size exclusion chromatographic system. The dynamic viscosity eta of the HA solutions was investigated using a rotational viscometer. On monitoring the sample dynamic viscosity for up to 5h, a small however constant increase of the eta value was observed, indicating rheopectic behavior of all 10 HA solutions. Addition of ascorbic acid to the HA solutions caused significant changes in the rheological properties of the samples investigated. The change of eta values in the course of time was explained by the redox reactions (caused by the added ascorbate) that occur during the dynamic viscosity monitoring.  相似文献

AimThis study aimed to evaluate the dosimetric impact of uncorrected yaw rotational error on both target coverage and OAR dose metrics in this patient population.BackgroundRotational set up errors can be difficult to correct in lung VMAT SABR treatments, and may lead to a change in planned dose distributions.Materials and methodsWe retrospectively applied systematic yaw rotational errors in 1° degree increments up to −5° and +5° degrees in 16 VMAT SABR plans. The impact on PTV and OARs (oesophagus, spinal canal, heart, airway, chest wall, brachial plexus, lung) was evaluated using a variety of dose metrics. Changes were assessed in relation to percentage deviation from approved planned dose at 0 degrees.ResultsTarget coverage was largely unaffected with the largest mean and maximum percentage difference being 1.4% and 6% respectively to PTV D98% at +5 degrees yaw.Impact on OARs was varied. Minimal impact was observed in oesophagus, spinal canal, chest wall or lung dose metrics. Larger variations were observed in the heart, airway and brachial plexus. The largest mean and maximum percentage differences being 20.77% and 311% respectively at −5 degrees yaw to airway D0.1cc, however, the clinical impact was negligible as these variations were observed in metrics with minimal initial doses.ConclusionsNo clinically unacceptable changes to dose metrics were observed in this patient cohort but large percentage deviations from approved dose metrics in OARs were noted. OARs with associated PRV structures appear more robust to uncorrected rotational error.  相似文献

Current LCA practice is mass oriented, i.e. is focused on the amount of chemicals released, disregarding place and time of release. Life cycle impact assessment aims at evaluating potential impacts, and a variety of weighting schemes is discussed to he used for ranking and aggregation of impacts. To establish a closer link between the quantity of a burden released and a decision making context, we propose to follow a detailed impact pathway analysis to estimate actual impacts for some priority impact categories, and use measured individuals’ preferences for impact valuation. Results from a case study illustrate the relevance of site specific impact assessment in the context of LCA.  相似文献

On-field measurement of head impacts has relied on the Head Impact Telemetry (HIT) System, which uses helmet mounted accelerometers to determine linear and angular head accelerations. HIT is used in youth and collegiate football to assess the frequency and severity of helmet impacts. This paper evaluates the accuracy of HIT for individual head impacts. Most HIT validations used a medium helmet on a Hybrid III head. However, the appropriate helmet is large based on the Hybrid III head circumference (58 cm) and manufacturer's fitting instructions. An instrumented skull cap was used to measure the pressure between the head of football players (n=63) and their helmet. The average pressure with a large helmet on the Hybrid III was comparable to the average pressure from helmets used by players. A medium helmet on the Hybrid III produced average pressures greater than the 99th percentile volunteer pressure level. Linear impactor tests were conducted using a large and medium helmet on the Hybrid III. Testing was conducted by two independent laboratories. HIT data were compared to data from the Hybrid III equipped with a 3-2-2-2 accelerometer array. The absolute and root mean square error (RMSE) for HIT were computed for each impact (n=90). Fifty-five percent (n=49) had an absolute error greater than 15% while the RMSE was 59.1% for peak linear acceleration.  相似文献

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis with a worldwide distribution very common in most countries. In Italy this acute febrile illness is more frequent in the Northern than in the Southern regions. In the period 1994-1996, the number of cases of Leptospirosis in Sicily was lower with respect to the northern-central regions (7.2% and 73.4% respectively). Between January 1990 and December 1999, a total of 9 leptospirosis cases were observed in the Regional Centre for Leptospirosis of Palermo. The patients were all males (age between 22 and 59 years) and their occupations varied. Laboratory diagnosis is performed by the classical microagglutination microscopical (MAT) but this test is very complex and time-consuming. This study compared the classical MAT with ELISA IgM by using 19 serum samples from 9 patients with confirmed leptospirosis. We also tested 23 serum samples from blood-donors and 29 serum samples from patients with other infectious diseases. By the MAT and the PanBio IgM ELISA all sera from patients were found to be positive. Our results indicate that MAT represents the test with the highest degree of specificity (100%), but ELISA is simpler to perform, considering the favourable degree of sensitivity (100%) and specificity (95.9%).  相似文献

Resistance to Ampicillin and Kanamycin displayed by heterotrophic bacteria isolated in Summer and in Spring from the littoral and the central parts of Lake Shira (a therapeutic lake in the Khakasia Republic, Russia) has been investigated. It has been found that in Summer, human and animal microflora featuring multiple antibiotic resistance (to Ampicillin and Kanamycin) predominates in all the studied stations of the littoral zone of the lake. In Spring, concentrations of bacteria featuring multiple antibiotic resistance decrease significantly and bacteria sensitive to antibiotics predominate in the lake. Emergence of multiple antibiotic resistance in bacteria of Lake Shira is caused by the input of allochthonous bacteria into the lake; this feature of heterotrophic bacteria of Lake Shira can be used to monitor the impact on the ecosystem made by health resorts.  相似文献

A large-scale increase in the discharge of humic material in rivers, as well as a darkening of Swedish lakes during the last 15 years, are illustrated and discussed. Increased precipitation was responsible for the greatest changes, but a marked part (10–40%) of the increase in river transport of coloured material was independent of discharge. Possible explanations for this increase may be: increased ground water level leading to increased runoff in superficial soil levels, a flow in direct contact with the organic soils; humus fractions in these layers may also be rich in iron resulting in more coloured water; increased primary production giving rise to increased amounts of litter and humic material; reduced capacity of soils to absorb organic matter because of acidification; and effects of modern forest management. Models of global climate predict a doubling of atmospheric-CO2, an increase in mean annual temperature of up to 1.5 to 4.5 °C, and in Fennoscandia possibly an increase in precipitation. The factors responsible for the observed large-scale change in humus flux may be strengthened by the increasing greenhouse impacts, and may result in more humic and coloured lakes in Fennoscandia during the next century.  相似文献

The broad acceptance of the conclusions and recommendations contained in the Brundtland Report with its emphasis on environmentally sustainable development is a good indication that this concept is gaining world-wide recognition. Science and the ensuing technology must be credited for creating and sustaining our modern society and we must now apply our expertise to minimize the adverse impacts of industrial growth and preserve our environment.Real progress towards the reconciliation of economic and environmental goals will require effective incorporation of environmental impact assessment (EIA) into the planning process and this paper describes the steps taken to improve the concept and practice of EIA in Canada. Public trust and participation in the process are key ingredients for its success as well as good science and meaningful dialogue between the scientists, the public and the decision makers. The availability of standard and reliable bioassessment techniques, which is the theme of this conference, should be helpful in strengthening the scientific basis for biophysical aspects of EIA.  相似文献
