Changes in the power and coherence of the β2 EEG band (18.5–30 Hz) were studied in subjects performing creative tasks under the conditions of emotional induction of different valence and without it. EEGs were recorded in subjects instructed to think up, within a limited time, the largest possible number of original definitions, differing in meaning, of emotionally positive, negative, and neutral nouns using additional words that were selected for them from another or the same semantic field. Significant changes in EEG power and coherence were found in the β2 band. The performance of the creative task without emotional induction led to a local decrease in β2 EEG power in the left frontotemporal area and a diffuse decrease in the coherence of the same band in most cortical zones. Emotional induction had a considerably stronger effect on the state of the cortex than the creative tasks used in the study: positive emotional induction caused a generalized increase in the power and coherence of the β2 EEG band, while negative emotional induction caused a diffuse decrease in the power of this band over the parietal, central, and temporal cortical areas.  相似文献

The EEG power in the β1, β2, and γ frequency bands during reading according to the method of “self-regulatory utterance” was compared in subjects reading aloud emotionally neutral business texts related to an unknown field of activity, fiction texts with clear positive or negative valences or personally important autobiographic texts with similar emotional valences. Two groups of subjects participated in the study: students training to be actors (N = 22) and students with other specializations (N = 23). We observed higher values of the EEG power in the γ (30–40 Hz) and β2 (18.5–29.5 Hz) frequency bands when comparing the states during reading of emotionally positive and emotionally negative fiction texts and personally important texts. These data are similar to our previous studies with the use of techniques that apply internal induction of positive or negative emotions without speech, in different groups of subjects. Internal induction of positive emotions was associated with an increase in the EEG power in these bands compared to the performance of an emotionally neutral task, whereas induction of negative emotions resulted in a decrease in the EEG power.  相似文献

An electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded in 19 standard derivations in two groups of subjects (student actors and nonactors) during emotionally positive and negative mental recalls of personal experiences (test 1) or mental reproduction of scenic situations (test 2), as well as during mental count of time. Statistical comparison of EEG spectral power estimations in the frequency bands , , 1, 2, 1, and 2 showed that the induction of emotionally positive and emotionally negative states led to statistically significant changes in the EEG absolute power (local synchronization) simultaneously in many derivations and frequency bands. Analysis of all possible comparisons and changes in frequency bands showed that bilateral prefrontal and temporal cortical areas are most active during the internal induction of emotional states. Emotionally positive states were characterized, predominantly, by higher local EEG power than emotionally negative states. The EEG power changes accompanying internal induction of emotionally negative and positive states were of the same order in the case of reproduction of a presented situation (scenic material), whereas, in the case of recall of personal experience, emotionally negative states were accompanied by substantially weaker EEG spectral changes than emotionally positive states. The internal induction of emotional states on the basis of scenic material was accompanied by a pronounced increase in the power of the EEG range over the whole cortical surface. EEG reactions to induction of emotional states were generally stronger in actors than in nonactors. In case of emotional induction on the basis of scenic material, qualitative differences in the EEG reactions were also revealed between the groups. The findings are discussed in comparison with known data of investigations into regional cerebral blood flow during internal emotional induction and EEG studies of internal and external emotional induction.  相似文献

Results of comparison of power of electromyogram (EMG) of six pericranial muscles in electroencephalographic frequency bands β1, β2 and γ are presented corresponding to performances of the tasks bound to inductions of affective experiences. The external induction was implemented by means of presentation of images and the internal induction by means of autobiographical memoirs revived. The tasks were focused on an induction of affective experiences with different emotional valences—positive, negative and neutral. The EMG was derived, registered and processed by means of computer electroencephalography techniques. Self-assessments of signs and intensities of experienced emotions were recorded as well. The study involved two groups of healthy subjects—students-actors (N = 39), and students of other specialties (N = 32). Statistically reliable, reproducible and diverse differences of mean EMG power of the pericranial muscles took place in comparisons of psychophysiological states with different valences of emotions, and certain differences in comparisons of states without expressed emotional differences, but differing in the direction of attention took place also. Therefore it is obviously necessary for an assessment of a degree of muscular contamination in records of high-frequency scalp electroencephalograms (EEG) to supplement psychophysiological EEG methods with EMG registration and statistical analysis and to do such registration for several facial muscles.  相似文献

Emotion effects on cognition have often been reported. However, only few studies investigated emotional effects on subsequent language processing, and in most cases these effects were induced by non-linguistic stimuli such as films, faces, or pictures. Here, we investigated how a paragraph of positive, negative, or neutral emotional valence affects the processing of a subsequent emotionally neutral sentence, which contained either semantic, syntactic, or no violation, respectively, by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Behavioral data revealed strong effects of emotion; error rates and reaction times increased significantly in sentences preceded by a positive paragraph relative to negative and neutral ones. In ERPs, the N400 to semantic violations was not affected by emotion. In the syntactic experiment, however, clear emotion effects were observed on ERPs. The left anterior negativity (LAN) to syntactic violations, which was not visible in the neutral condition, was present in the negative and positive conditions. This is interpreted as reflecting modulatory effects of prior emotions on syntactic processing, which is discussed in the light of three alternative or complementary explanations based on emotion-induced cognitive styles, working memory, and arousal models. The present effects of emotion on the LAN are especially remarkable considering that syntactic processing has often been regarded as encapsulated and autonomous.  相似文献

Multichannel recording of EEG in 11 subjects, who were three times subjected to the emotional Stroop task (in the presence of words with negative emotional loading, neutral words, and inhibitory verbal stimuli), demonstrated that the spectral power of the high-frequency subcomponent of the alpha-rhythm in the left hemisphere increased sequentially under these conditions. Modifications of EEG, in general, were indicative of noticeable transformation of informational flows related to the learning effect and decrease of the cognitive “pressure” due to habituation to the effects of emotionally neutral and inhibitory verbal stimuli. Data related to the EEG pattern agree with the results of measurements of a behavioral index (decrease in the time of sensorimotor reaction).  相似文献

It has been suggested that infants resonate emotionally to others' positive and negative affect displays, and that these responses become stronger towards emotions with negative valence around the age of 12-months. In this study we measured 6- and 12-month-old infants' changes in pupil diameter when presented with the image and sound of peers experiencing happiness, distress and an emotionally neutral state. For all participants the perception of another's distress triggered larger pupil diameters. Perceiving other's happiness also induced larger pupil diameters but for shorter time intervals. Importantly, we also found evidence for an asymmetry in autonomous arousal towards positive versus negative emotional displays. Larger pupil sizes for another's distress compared to another's happiness were recorded shortly after stimulus onset for the older infants, and in a later time window for the 6-month-olds. These findings suggest that arousal responses for negative as well as for positive emotions are present in the second half of the first postnatal year. Importantly, an asymmetry with stronger responses for negative emotions seems to be already present at this age.  相似文献

The lateralization of emotion has been described in a variety of animals. The right hemisphere has been implicated in the processing of negative emotions while positive emotions are processed in the left. Most animal studies of this phenomenon to date have used intrinsically emotionally arousing stimuli and there are few examples of lateralized responses to learned emotional triggers. It is known that males and females may demonstrate different patterns of lateralization, and that these sex differences may interact with other variables. We investigated the lateralized response of male and female convict cichlids to emotionally conditioned stimuli. One stimulus was given an appetitive (positive emotional valence) association by pairing with food. The other stimulus was given an aversive (negative emotional valence) association by pairing with a chemical alarm signal. We found that males tend to be more strongly lateralized to aversive stimuli while females are more strongly lateralized when responding to appetitive stimuli.  相似文献

The present study addressed EEG pattering during experimentally manipulated emotion. Film clips previously shown to induce happiness, joy, anger, disgust, fear/anxiety, sadness, as well as neutral control films, were presented to 30 university students while a 62-channel EEG was recorded, and a self-reported effect was described. Analyses revealed both emotion-specific and emotion-unspecific EEG pattering for the emotions under study. Induced positive and negative emotions were accompanied by hemispheric activation asymmetries in theta-2, alpha-2, and beta-1 EEG frequency bands. Emotions of joy and disgust induced lateralized a theta-2 power increase in anterior-temporal and frontal regions of the left hemisphere reflecting involvement of cognitive mechanisms in the emotional processing. Negative emotions of disgust and fear/anxiety were characterized by alpha-2 and beta-1 desynchronization of the right temporal-parietal cortex, suggesting its involvement in modulation of the emotion-related arousal.  相似文献

The present study was aimed to assess the influence of alexithymia (an emotional disorder associated with difficulties in identification and describing personal feelings) on regional activity while experiencing positive or negative emotional activation. The 62-channels EEG was recorded in non-alexithymic (n = 27) and alexithymic (n = 17) subjects viewing emotional film clips. Effects of alexithymia were found in the upper theta, low and upper alpha frequency bands; for all the bands the alexithymics exhibited greater reactivity of the right hemisphere, suggesting enhanced avoidance motivational tendencies, negative effect and autonomic arousal. The present phenomenon suggests engagement of additional cognitive resources in identification of emotional feelings. Such a 'cognitive effort' can be a result of impaired referential links and deficit of symbolic processing of emotions.  相似文献

There appears to be a significant disconnect between symptomatic and functional recovery in bipolar disorder (BD). Some evidence points to interepisode cognitive dysfunction. We tested the hypothesis that some of this dysfunction was related to emotional reactivity in euthymic bipolar subjects may effect cognitive processing. A modification of emotional gender categorization oddball task was used. The target was gender (probability 25%) of faces with negative, positive, and neutral emotional expression. The experiment had 720 trials (3 blocks × 240 trials each). Each stimulus was presented for 150 ms, and the EEG/ERP responses were recorded for 1,000 ms. The inter-trial interval was varied in 1,100–1,500 ms range to avoid expectancy effects. Task took about 35 min to complete. There were 9 BD and 9 control subjects matched for age and gender. Reaction time (RT) was globally slower in BD subjects. The centro-parietal amplitudes at N170 and N200, and P200 and P300 were generally smaller in the BD group compared to controls. Latency was shorter to neutral and negative targets in BD. Frontal P200 amplitude was higher to emotional negative facial non-targets in BD subjects. The frontal N200 in response to positive facial emotion was less negative in BD subjects. The frontal P300 of BD subjects was lower to emotionally neutral targets. ERP responses to facial emotion in BD subjects varied significantly from normal controls. These variations are consistent with the common depressive symptomology seen in long term studies of bipolar subjects.  相似文献

The ability to integrate contextual information is important for the comprehension of emotional and social situations. While some studies have shown that emotional processes and social cognition are impaired in people with hypomanic personality trait, no results have been reported concerning the neurophysiological processes mediating the processing of emotional information during the integration of contextual social information in this population. We therefore chose to conduct an ERP study dealing with the integration of emotional information in a population with hypomanic personality trait. Healthy participants were evaluated using the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS), and ERPs were recorded during a linguistic task in which participants silently read sentence pairs describing short social situations. The first sentence implicitly conveyed the positive or negative emotional state of a character. The second sentence was emotionally congruent or incongruent with the first sentence. We analyzed the difference in the modulation of two components (N400 and LPC) in response to the emotional word present at the end of the “target” sentences as a function of the HPS score and the emotional valence of the context. Our results showed a possible modulation of the N400 component in response to both positive and negative context among the participants who scored high on the Mood Volatility subscale of the Hypomanic Personality Scale. These results seem to indicate that the participants with hypomanic personality traits exhibited specificities in the integration of emotions at the level of the early-mobilized neurocognitive processes (N400). Participants with hypomanic personality traits found it difficult to integrate negative emotional contexts, while simultaneously exhibiting an enhanced integration of positive emotional contexts.  相似文献

More than sensory stimuli, odorous stimuli were employed to facilitate the evocation of emotional responses in the present study. The odor-stimulated emotion was evaluated by investigating specific features of encephalographic (EEG) responses produced thereof. In this study, the concentrations of the same odor were altered; viz., the changes in odor-induced emotional level were compared with the concurrently monitored EEG response features. In addition, we performed the mental task to evoke the arousal state of the brain and investigated the resemblance of response characteristics of the resting state to the post-mental task resting state. Subjects having no abnormalities in the sense of smell included 12 male undergraduate and graduate students (age range: 22-26 years). Experiment I involved 2 types of odors that induced favorable odorous stimuli (pleasant induction); test-solutions were either diluted 150 (easily perceptible odorous sensation) or 500 (slightly perceptible odorous stimuli) times. Experiment II had 2 types of odors that evoked unfavorable odorous stimuli (unpleasant induction), and test-solutions with dilution rates similar to those of pleasant induction were prepared. Odorless distilled water was used as the control in both experiments. From results of rating the odorous stimuli of our compounds used, the candidates were respectively found to be appropriate in inducing the pleasant and unpleasant smell sensations. The analyses of EEG responses on inducing pleasant and unpleasant smell sensations revealed that the EEG activities of the left frontal region were enhanced. This finding may establish the hypothesis of a relationship prevailing between the positive approach-related emotion evoked by the visual sensation and the left hemisphere (Davidson, 1992; Tomarken et al., 1989). In other words, it can be interpreted that the negative withdrawal-related emotion may be associated with activities of the right hemisphere. However, this hypothesis may not be applicable to the unpleasant odors, as the unpleasant emotions are activated by the unpleasant odors not only in the bilateral frontal regions but also over an extensive area of the brain. As such, the pleasant emotions are evoked in the left frontal brain region while the unpleasant emotions are incited in the bilateral frontal and extensive regions in the brain with the odorous stimuli. Moreover, intrinsic EEG activities in response to the pleasant and unpleasant inputs were not observed after performing the mental tasks. In other words, EEG responses reflecting central nervous system activities elevated by loading of the mental tasks as a result of exposure to the pleasant and unpleasant odors may not apparently be observed.  相似文献

Memory performance is usually impaired when participants have to encode information while performing a concurrent task. Recent studies using recall tasks have found that emotional items are more resistant to such cognitive depletion effects than non-emotional items. However, when recognition tasks are used, the same effect is more elusive as recent recognition studies have obtained contradictory results. In two experiments, we provide evidence that negative emotional content can reliably reduce the effects of cognitive depletion on recognition memory only if stimuli with high levels of emotional intensity are used. In particular, we found that recognition performance for realistic pictures was impaired by a secondary 3-back working memory task during encoding if stimuli were emotionally neutral or had moderate levels of negative emotionality. In contrast, when negative pictures with high levels of emotional intensity were used, the detrimental effects of the secondary task were significantly attenuated.  相似文献

In 22 children aged 5-7 during the play "make up a square" negative (1st step) and positive (2nd and 3rd steps) emotions were formed. General behaviour and speech expressions of children were recorded during the play. Before beginning of the play, intellectual development of children was tested, and two groups were singled out: with low (A) and high (B) levels of tasks solution. Changes of verbal values Fot and n(0) in children from two groups were compared during the play. Fot was most sensitive to the appearance of the emotional state. Emotional states were more expressed in children from group A: percentage of significant changes in Fot and n(0) values in comparison with the background was higher in the group A than in the group B. In children of the group A the negative emotion formed at the 1st step of the experiment caused a decrease of level of motivation to fulfillment of the task to make up a "difficult" square. In children of the group B the negative emotion did not cause any distinct decrease of motivation level. Fot reflects the change of motivational attitude to task) and n(0)--of informational (actualization of knowledge, reasoning etc.) components of the emotional reaction connected with the process of task solution.  相似文献

We studied modifications of EEG activity related to perception of visual stimuli (pictures) of the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) in women during different phases of the ovulatory (menstrual) cycle. We found that the woman’s brain is most intensely activated by both emotionally negative and positive visual stimuli during the follicular phase of the ovulatory cycle, while such activation is minimum during ovulation per se. Upon the action of neutral stimuli, cerebral activation was the most intense during the lutein phase (compared with that within other phases); manifestations of activation were concentrated in the right hemisphere. Cognitive and emotional components of perception of affective pictures were expressed to a greatest extent in the course of viewing positive stimuli during the follicular phase. Perception of emotionally pleasant stimuli during other phases was accompanied by lateralization of activation of sensory and analytical processes in the left hemisphere during the ovulatory phase and in the right hemisphere within the lutein phase. The viewing of emotionally negative pictures during the follicular phase led to a rise in the power of theta oscillations in the left frontal region and also to depression of the alpha activity in central/parietal parts of the left hemisphere, which can result from aggravation of anxiety and verbally shaped disturbing ideas upon the action of such stimuli. Presentation of erotically colored visual stimuli caused the most intense changes in the EEG, which depended on the phases of the ovulatory cycle, during post-stimulation time interval but not during the viewing of pictures itself.  相似文献

Different kinds of emotional phenomena are related in a different way with the workings of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Emotional reactions (phasic emotions), which appear on the basis of a cognitive loading (mental representation, recognition, play, prognostication, watching movies, reading of emotionally colored texts or separate words and so on) and which are tested with the help of electrophysiological methods, activate different regions of the left and right hemispheres of the brain depending on the complexity and novelty of emotiogenic situations as well as on the degree of subject's emotional tension. The tonic emotions individual background-mood, on which depends the emotional estimation (negative of positive) of the presented stimuli or events, are determined mostly by a prolonged, relatively stable, tonic activation of each hemisphere connected with subjects' individual characteristics. The predominance of the left hemisphere activity creates positive emotional background, whereas the predominance of the right hemisphere creates negative background.  相似文献

The 62-channel EEG was recorded in control (CI, n = 21) and high anxiety (HA, n = 18) individuals under emotionally neutral (eyes closed, eyes open, and neutral videoclip) as well as under emotionally positive and aversive arousal conditions elicited by affective videoclips. In the present study the first three experimental conditions (eyes closed--eyes open--viewing emotionally neutral films) modeled increasing non-emotional arousal. Findings from this continuum show that in the HA individuals the lowest level of tonic arousal (eyes closed) was associated with stronger right-sided parietotemporal theta1 and beta1 activity. Group differences during cortical arousal increased by sensory stimulation (eyes open, neutral clips presentation) were marked only by persisting favored right hemisphere beta1 activity in high anxiety individuals. Under aversive arousal condition, attended by high intensity experience of emotions of anger, fear, disgust and anxiety, the HA subjects selectively desynchronized the right parietotemporal beta1 power which was initially higher in the control conditions. The obtained findings allow to suggest that peculiarities of right-sided parietotemporal EEG theta1 and beta1 activity in HA individuals under studied emotionally neutral and aversive arousal conditions point to overactivated withdrawal system in "checking" and "control" modes.  相似文献

The EEG spectral power was calculated in 102 students aged 18-25 years in three experimental conditions (during the common educational process, immediately before and after an examination). Before the examination (stress situation), predominant activation of the right anterior cortical quadrant (the area related with negative emotions, according to R. Davidson, 1993) was revealed by the asymmetry coefficient of the beta rhythm. Subjects with low amplitude of the alpha rhythm (more activated) manifested not only emotional but also autonomic disturbances, while only emotional signs were pronounced in students with high alpha (less activated). Increase in the theta rhythm spectral power during stress and its decrease in the poststress period were observed in the less activated persons, which is considered to be a normal reaction to emotionally negative stimuli. On the contrary, in students with low alpha the theta rhythm power in the stress situation was decreased pointing to their emotional instability. In this group, as distinct from the first one, the beta 2 rhythm recorded in the right anterior cortical quadrant did not decrease in the poststress situation. Together with the observed theta rhythm, decrease in the left-hemisphere and bilateral prefrontal areas in the stress situation, this deviation testifies to a predisposition to the reactive depression of these subjects.  相似文献

The effect of color hue saturation on the emotional state (ES) of humans has been investigated. Frontal EEG asymmetry was used to determine the subject’s ES. The emotionogenic stimuli caused converse dynamics of frontal EEG asymmetry. Negative stimuli elicited a decrease in the value of frontal EEG asymmetry, and positive stimuli increased the value of frontal EEG asymmetry in the anterofrontal and posterofrontal leads. These dynamics of frontal EEG asymmetry indicates the formation of an ES corresponding to the presented stimuli. Blue and red color balance modification of stimuli leads to changes in the dynamics of frontal EEG asymmetry during the scanning of emotionally positive and negative stimuli. None of the subjects noticed the color modification of the video stimuli used. This leads us to the conclusion that the change in the frontal asymmetry in response to modified stimuli resulted from an unconscious perception of the modification of the color characteristics of the stimuli. The results show the possibility of the effect of unconscious perception of color characteristics of video stimuli on the ES of humans.  相似文献
