Information about anaerobic energy production and mechanical efficiency that occurs over time during short-lasting maximal exercise is scarce and controversial. Bilateral leg press is an interesting muscle contraction model to estimate anaerobic energy production and mechanical efficiency during maximal exercise because it largely differs from the models used until now. This study examined the changes in muscle metabolite concentration and power output production during the first and the second half of a set of 10 repetitions to failure (10RM) of bilateral leg press exercise. On two separate days, muscle biopsies were obtained from vastus lateralis prior and immediately after a set of 5 or a set of 10 repetitions. During the second set of 5 repetitions, mean power production decreased by 19% and the average ATP utilisation accounted for by phosphagen decreased from 54% to 19%, whereas ATP utilisation from anaerobic glycolysis increased from 46 to 81%. Changes in contraction time and power output were correlated to the changes in muscle Phosphocreatine (PCr; r = −0.76; P<0.01) and lactate (r = −0.91; P<0.01), respectively, and were accompanied by parallel decreases (P<0.01-0.05) in muscle energy charge (0.6%), muscle ATP/ADP (8%) and ATP/AMP (19%) ratios, as well as by increases in ADP content (7%). The estimated average rate of ATP utilisation from anaerobic sources during the final 5 repetitions fell to 83% whereas total anaerobic ATP production increased by 9% due to a 30% longer average duration of exercise (18.4±4.0 vs 14.2±2.1 s). These data indicate that during a set of 10RM of bilateral leg press exercise there is a decrease in power output which is associated with a decrease in the contribution of PCr and/or an increase in muscle lactate. The higher energy cost per repetition during the second 5 repetitions is suggestive of decreased mechanical efficiency.  相似文献

At the onset of a square-wave exercise of moderate intensity, in the absence of any detectable lactate production, the hydrolysis of phosphocreatine (PCr) fills the gap between energy requirement and energy yield by oxidative pathways, thus representing a readily available source of energy for the muscle. We verified experimentally the relationships between high-energy phosphates and/or their changes and the time constant of PCr concentration ([PCr]) kinetics in humans (tau(PCr)). High-energy phosphate concentration (by (31)P-NMR spectroscopy) in the calf muscles were measured during three repetitions of the rest-to-work transition of moderate aerobic square-wave exercise on nine healthy volunteers, while resting [PCr] was estimated from the appropriate spectroscopy data. PCr concentration decreased significantly (22 +/- 6%) from rest to steady-state exercise, without differences among the three repetitions. Absolute resting [PCr] and tau(PCr) were consistent with literature values, amounting to 27.5 +/- 2.2 mM and 23.9 +/- 2.9 s, respectively. No significant relationships were detected between individual tau(PCr) and mechanical power, fraction or absolute amount of PCr hydrolyzed, or change in ADP concentration. On the contrary, individual tau(PCr) (s) was linearly related to absolute resting [PCr] (mM), the relationship being described by: tau(PCr) = 0.656 + 0.841.[PCr] (n = 9, R = 0.708, P < 0.05). These data support the view that in humans PCr concentration sets the time course of the oxidative metabolism in skeletal muscle at the start of exercise, being one of the main controllers of oxidative phosphorylation.  相似文献

Adenine nucleotide (AN) degradation has been shown to occur during intense exercise in the horse and in man, at or close to the point of fatigue. The aim of the study was to compare the concentrations of muscle inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) and plasma ammonia (NH3) during intense exercise with the concentrations of muscle and blood lactate. Seven trained thoroughbred horses were used in the study. Each exercised on a treadmill for periods of between 30 s and 150 s, at 11 and/or 12 m.s-1. Blood and muscle samples were taken and analysed for lactate and NH3 and adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), phosphorylcreatine (PCr), IMP, creatine, lactate and glycerol-3-phosphate respectively. Horses showed varying degrees of AN degradation as indicated by plasma [NH3] and muscle [ATP] and [IMP]. Comparisons of [IMP] with muscle [lactate], and plasma [NH3] with that of blood [lactate] indicated a threshold to the start of AN degradation. This threshold corresponded to a lactate content of around 80 mmol.kg-1 dry muscle and 15 mmol.l-1 in blood. We discuss the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for AN degradation and suggest that IMP formation occurs as a result of a sudden rise in the concentration of adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP) and consequently the concentration of adenosine 5'-monophosphate. The data suggest a critical pH below which there may be a substantial reduction in the kinetics of ADP rephosphorylation provided by PCr resulting in an increase in [ADP], which is the stimulus to AN degradation during intense exercise.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pre-exhaustion exercise on lower-extremity muscle activation during a leg press exercise. Pre-exhaustion exercise, a technique frequently used by weight trainers, involves combining a single-joint exercise immediately followed by a related multijoint exercise (e.g., a knee extension exercise followed by a leg press exercise). Seventeen healthy male subjects performed 1 set of a leg press exercise with and without pre-exhaustion exercise, which consisted of 1 set of a knee extension exercise. Both exercises were performed at a load of 10 repetitions maximum (10 RM). Electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and gluteus maximus muscles simultaneously during the leg press exercise. The number of repetitions of the leg press exercise performed by subjects with and without pre-exhaustion exercise was also documented. The activation of the rectus femoris and the vastus lateralis muscles during the leg press exercise was significantly less when subjects were pre-exhausted (p < 0.05). No significant EMG change was observed for the gluteus maximus muscle. When in a pre-exhausted state, subjects performed significantly (p < 0.001) less repetitions of the leg press exercise. Our findings do not support the popular belief of weight trainers that performing pre-exhaustion exercise is more effective in order to enhance muscle activity compared with regular weight training. Conversely, pre-exhaustion exercise may have disadvantageous effects on performance, such as decreased muscle activity and reduction in strength, during multijoint exercise.  相似文献

A depletion of phosphocreatine (PCr), fall in the total adenine nucleotide pool (TAN = ATP + ADP + AMP), and increase in TAN degradation products inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) and hypoxanthine are observed at fatigue during prolonged exercise at 70% maximal O(2) uptake in untrained subjects [J. Baldwin, R. J. Snow, M. F. Carey, and M. A. Febbraio. Am. J. Physiol. 277 (Regulatory Integrative Comp. Physiol. 46): R295-R300, 1999]. The present study aimed to examine whether these metabolic changes are also prevalent when exercise is performed below the blood lactate threshold (LT). Six healthy, untrained humans exercised on a cycle ergometer to voluntary exhaustion at an intensity equivalent to 93 +/- 3% of LT ( approximately 65% peak O(2) uptake). Muscle biopsy samples were obtained at rest, at 10 min of exercise, approximately 40 min before fatigue (F-40 =143 +/- 13 min), and at fatigue (F = 186 +/- 31 min). Glycogen concentration progressively declined (P < 0.01) to very low levels at fatigue (28 +/- 6 mmol glucosyl U/kg dry wt). Despite this, PCr content was not different when F-40 was compared with F and was only reduced by 40% when F was compared with rest (52. 8 +/- 3.7 vs. 87.8 +/- 2.0 mmol/kg dry wt; P < 0.01). In addition, TAN concentration was not reduced, IMP did not increase significantly throughout exercise, and hypoxanthine was not detected in any muscle samples. A significant correlation (r = 0.95; P < 0. 05) was observed between exercise time and glycogen use, indicating that glycogen availability is a limiting factor during prolonged exercise below LT. However, because TAN was not reduced, PCr was not depleted, and no correlation was observed between glycogen content and IMP when glycogen stores were compromised, fatigue may be related to processes other than those involved in muscle high-energy phosphagen metabolism.  相似文献

To examine the effects of different rest intervals between sets on serum creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, 10 men (age = 25.6 ± 2.2 years, height = 173.1 ± 7.1 cm, and body mass = 75.9 ± 10.0 kg) participated in a randomized within-subject design that involved 4 resistance exercise sessions. Each session consisted of 4 sets of 10 repetitions with 10 repetition maximum loads for the chest press, pullover, biceps curl, triceps extension, leg extension, and prone leg curl. The sessions differed only in the length of the rest interval between sets and exercises, specifically: 60, 90, 120, 180 seconds. Serum CK and LDH were significantly (p < 0.05) elevated 24-72 hours after each session, with no significant differences between rest intervals (p = 0.94 and p = 0.99, respectively). The mechanical stress imposed by the 4 resistance exercise sessions invoked similar damage to the muscle fibers independent of the rest interval between sets. These data indicate that the accumulated volume of work is the primary determinant of muscle damage in trained subjects who are accustomed to resistance exercise with short rest intervals.  相似文献

Our purpose was to examine the effect of the chest press and leg press exercises on intraocular pressure (IOP) in physically active, college-aged students. Fifteen healthy males and 15 females performed 3 sets of 10 repetitions of the chest press or leg press with 70% 1 repetition maximum (1RM). IOP was measured using applanation tonometry with a Tono-PenXL prior to exercise, following each set and 5 minutes after the third set. Data were analyzed with a repeated-measures two-way analysis of variance and paired t-tests when necessary. A p < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. For the chest press, IOP was reduced 8.0% after the first set, up to 14.5% after the second and third sets, and remained depressed 5 minutes post exercise. For the leg press, IOP was reduced 6.9% after the second set and 13.2% after the third set. IOP began to return to the pre-exercise value during 5 minutes post exercise. Males and females had similar IOP responses to the chest press and leg press exercise. Dynamic resistance exercises induce modest postexercise decreases in IOP.  相似文献

Gastrocnemius muscle phosphocreatine ([PCr]) and hydrogen ion ([H(+)]) were measured using (31)P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy during repeated bouts of 10-s heavy-intensity (HI) exercise and 5-s rest compared with continuous (CONT) HI exercise. Recreationally active male subjects (n = 7; 28 yr ± 9 yr) performed on separate occasions 12 min of isotonic plantar flexion (0.75 Hz) CONT and intermittent (INT; 10-s exercise, 5-s rest) exercise. The HI power output in both CONT and INT was set at 50% of the difference between the power output associated with the onset of intracellular acidosis and peak exercise determined from a prior incremental plantar flexion protocol. Intracellular concentrations of [PCr] and [H(+)] were calculated at 4 s and 9 s of the work period and at 4 s of the rest period in INT and during CONT exercise. [PCr] and [H(+)] (mean ± SE) were greater at 4 s of the rest periods vs. 9 s of exercise over the course of the INT exercise bout: [PCr] (20.7 mM ± 0.6 vs. 18.7 mM ± 0.5; P < 0.01); [H(+)] (370 nM ± 13.50 vs. 284 nM ± 13.6; P < 0.05). Average [H(+)] was similar for CONT vs. INT. We therefore suggest that there is a glycolytic contribution to ATP recovery during the very short rest period (<5 s) of INT and that the greater average power output of CONT did not manifest in greater [H(+)] and greater glycolytic contribution compared with INT exercise.  相似文献

The effects of concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) contractions on Delta plasma volume (PV), heart rate (HR), and lactate in responses to protocols in different body positions were investigated. CON or ECC contractions were performed in either a single-exercise (6 sets of 12 repetitions of leg extensions completed at 80% of 12 repetition maximum [12RM] with 3-minute rest periods) or multiexercise (4 sets of 10 repetitions for both CON and ECC trials of bench press, leg extension, military press, and leg curl at 80% of 10RM with 90-second rest periods) protocols. HR and lactate increased significantly for both protocols from pre- to postexercise for CON but not ECC trials. DeltaPV was greater following both CON single-exercise (-11.48 +/- 1.38%) and multiexercise (-4.64 +/- 0.33%) trials vs. ECC single-exercise (-1.62 +/- 1.69%) and multiexercise (-1.26 +/- 1.20) trials. Data demonstrate ECC exercise in response to single and multiexercise protocols at the same absolute workload as CON exercise produces less cardiovascular stress.  相似文献

Muscle metabolic responses during 16 hours of intermittent heavy exercise   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The alterations in muscle metabolism were investigated in response to repeated sessions of heavy intermittent exercise performed over 16 h. Tissue samples were extracted from the vastus lateralis muscle before (B) and after (A) 6 min of cycling at approximately 91% peak aerobic power at repetitions one (R1), two (R2), nine (R9), and sixteen (R16) in 13 untrained volunteers (peak aerobic power = 44.3 +/- 0.66 mL.kg-1.min-1, mean +/- SE). Metabolite content (mmol.(kg dry mass)-1) in homogenates at R1 indicated decreases (p < 0.05) in ATP (21.9 +/- 0.62 vs. 17.7 +/- 0.68) and phosphocreatine (80.3 +/- 2.0 vs. 8.56 +/- 1.5) and increases (p < 0.05) in inosine monophosphate (IMP, 0.077 +/- 0.12 vs. 3.63 +/- 0.85) and lactate (3.80 +/- 0.57 vs. 84.6 +/- 10.3). The content (micromol.(kg dry mass)-1) of calculated free ADP ([ADPf], 86.4 +/- 5.5 vs. 1014 +/- 237) and free AMP ([AMPf], 0.32 +/- 0.03 vs. 78.4 +/- 31) also increased (p < 0.05). No differences were observed between R1 and R2. By R9 and continuing to R16, pronounced reductions (p < 0.05) at A were observed in IMP (72.2%), [ADPf] (58.7%), [AMPf] (85.5%), and lactate (41.3%). The 16-hour protocol resulted in an 89.7% depletion (p < 0.05) of muscle glycogen. Repetition-dependent increases were also observed in oxygen consumption during exercise. It is concluded that repetitive heavy exercise results in less of a disturbance in phosphorylation potential, possibly as a result of increased mitochondrial respiration during the rest-to-work non-steady-state transition.  相似文献

This study compares a non-linear (neural network) and a linear (linear regression) power mapping using a set of features of the surface electromyogram recorded from the vastus medialis and lateralis muscles. Fifteen healthy participants performed 5 sets of 10 repetitions leg press using the individual maximum load corresponding what they could perform 10 times (10RM) with 120 s of rest between them. The following sEMG variables were computed from each extension contraction and used as inputs to both approaches: mean average value (MAV), median frequency (Fmed), the spectral parameter proposed by Dimitrov (FInsm5), average (over the observation interval) of the instantaneous mean frequency obtained from a Choi–Williams distribution (MFM), and wavelet indices ratio between moments at different scales (WIRM1551, WIRM1M51, WIRM1522, WIRE51, and WIRW51). The non-linear mapping (neural network) provided higher correlation coefficients and signal-to-noise ratios values (although not significantly different) between the actual and the estimated changes of power compared to linear mapping (linear regression) using the sEMG variables alone and a combination of WIRW51 and MFM (obtained by a stepwise multiple linear regression). In conclusion, non-linear mapping of force loss during dynamic knee extension exercise showed higher signal-to-noise ratio and correlation coefficients between the actual and estimated power output compared to linear mapping. However, since no significant differences were observed between linear and non-linear approaches, both were equally valid to estimate changes in peak power during fatiguing repetitive leg extension exercise.  相似文献

Bioenergetic interpretations of energy transfer specify that rapid anaerobic, substrate-level adenosine triphosphate (ATP) turnover with lactate production is not appropriately represented by an oxygen uptake measurement. Two types of weight training, 60% of 1 repetition maximum (1RM) with repetitions to exhaustion and 80% of 1RM with limited repetitions, were compared to determine if blood lactate measurements, as an estimate of rapid substrate-level ATP turnover, provide a significant contribution to the interpretation of total energy expenditure as compared with oxygen uptake methods alone. The measurement of total energy expenditure consisted of blood lactate, exercise oxygen uptake, and a modified excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC); oxygen uptake-only measurements consisted of exercise oxygen uptake and EPOC. When data from male and female subjects were pooled, total energy expenditure was significantly higher for reps to exhaustion (arm curl, +27 kJ; bench press, +27 kJ; leg press, +38 kJ; p < 0.03) and limited reps (arm curl, +12 kJ; bench press, +23 kJ; leg press, + 24 kJ; p < 0.05) when a separate measure of blood lactate was part of the interpretation. When the data from men and women were analyzed separately, blood lactate often made a significant contribution to total energy expenditure for reps to exhaustion (endurance-type training), but this trend was not always statistically evident for the limited reps (strength-type training) protocol. It is suggested that the estimation of total energy expenditure for weight training is improved with the inclusion, rather than the omission, of an estimate of rapid anaerobic substrate-level ATP turnover.  相似文献

The subjects of this study (n = 20; 16 women, 4 men) performed 10 weeks of leg press training using one of two exercise modes (isoload or isotonic) with no crossover. Their workouts, which were performed 3 times per week, involved 4 sets of 8 repetitions with maximal voluntary effort. Testing was performed pre- and posttraining to examine bone and muscle changes. Posttraining, both groups incurred significant concentric knee extensor strength and leg muscle mass gains, while the percentage of body fat and total body fat mass each decreased. Leg and total body bone mineral densities showed group-by-time interactions, as isoload exercise caused posttraining gains, while isoinertial values were unchanged. Bone resorption assays showed insignificant changes. Isoload training likely involved greater strain magnitudes and rates to evoke higher peak forces and osteogenesis. Transduction of the training stimulus may have involved (a) formation in response to microdamage, and (b) piezoelectric-induced potentials that stimulated site-specific osteoblast activity and osteogenesis.  相似文献

Trepanowski, JF, Farney, TM, McCarthy, CG, Schilling, BK, Craig, SA, and Bloomer, RJ. The effects of chronic betaine supplementation on exercise performance, skeletal muscle oxygen saturation, and associated biochemical parameters in resistance trained men. J Strength Cond Res 25(12): 3461-3471, 2011-We examined the effects of chronic betaine supplementation on exercise performance and associated parameters in resistance trained men. Men were randomly assigned in a double-blind manner using a crossover design to consume betaine (2.5 g of betaine mixed in 500 ml of Gatorade?) or a placebo (500 ml of Gatorade?) for 14 days, with a 21-day washout period. Before and after each treatment period, tests of lower- and upper-body muscular power and isometric force were conducted, including a test of upper-body muscular endurance (10 sets of bench press exercise to failure). Muscle tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) during the bench press protocol was measured via near infrared spectroscopy. Blood samples were collected before and after the exercise test protocol for analysis of lactate, nitrate/nitrite (NOx), and malondialdehyde (MDA). When analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance, no significant differences were noted between conditions for exercise performance variables (p > 0.05). However, an increase in total repetitions (p = 0.01) and total volume load (p = 0.02) in the 10-set bench press protocol was noted with betaine supplementation (paired t-tests), with values increasing approximately 6.5% from preintervention to postintervention. Although not of statistical significance (p = 0.14), postexercise blood lactate increased to a lesser extent with betaine supplementation (210%) compared with placebo administration (270%). NOx was lower postintervention as compared with preintervention (p = 0.06), and MDA was relatively unchanged. The decrease in StO2 during the bench press protocol was greater with betaine vs. placebo (p = 0.01), possibly suggesting enhanced muscle oxygen consumption. These findings indicate that betaine supplementation results in a moderate increase in total repetitions and volume load in the bench press exercise, without favorably impacting other performance measures.  相似文献

Eight healthy men cycled to exhaustion [4.1 +/- 0.3 (SE) min] during beta-adrenoceptor blockade (beta B) with propranolol. The exercise was repeated on another day with the same power output and duration but without propranolol (control). The total adenine nucleotide (TAN) content in muscle (quadriceps femoris) decreased during exercise, and the decrease was more pronounced during beta B (delta TAN = 4.8 +/- 1.0 mmol/kg dry wt) than during control (delta TAN = 2.8 +/- 0.9; P less than 0.01, beta B vs. control). The decrease in TAN corresponded with a similar increase in inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP). The increase in IMP was more pronounced during beta B (delta IMP = 5.1 +/- 1.2 mmol/kg dry wt) than during control (delta IMP = 2.8 +/- 0.7; P less than 0.05, beta B vs. control). Similarly, the increase in the content of NH3 in muscle was twice as high during beta B vs. control (P less than 0.01). The increase in muscle lactate and the decrease in phosphocreatine during exercise were similar between treatments, but postexercise hexose phosphates were approximately twofold higher (P less than 0.05) during control than during beta B. It is concluded that beta B enhances the degradation of TAN and the production of NH3 and IMP in muscle during intense exercise. This indicates that the imbalance between the rates of utilization and resynthesis of ATP is more pronounced during beta B possibly because of a decreased O2 transport to the contracting muscle and a diminished activation of glycolysis by the hexose phosphates.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Effects of normal strength exercise on leukocyte accumulation were examined in 10 well-trained male subjects (27.2 +/- 2.7 yr). The workout, consisting of five maximal sets of three repetitions of leg press exercise and five maximal sets of six repetitions of knee extension exercise, was performed with the dominant leg, and the other leg served as control. Repeated maximal isokinetic knee extensions at 60 degrees /s were performed to evaluate neuromuscular fatigue and recovery after the workout. Accumulation of leukocytes was assessed with 99mTc-labeled cells, and repeated images of the thighs were taken 1-24 h after the workout. Maximal force-generating capacity in the exercised leg was reduced by 17 +/- 2% (P < 0.01) after the workout. The course of recovery followed a biphasic pattern characterized by halted recovery 10-23 h after exercise. The presence of leukocytes was approximately 10% higher in the exercised than in the control thigh 10 h after exercise (P < 0.05). This difference increased to approximately 15% at 20 h after exercise (P < 0.05). The retarded recovery of maximal force-generating capacity 10-20 h after exercise, together with a significant infiltration of leukocytes in exercised muscle during the same time interval, shows a temporal relation between leukocyte infiltration and impaired recovery.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine 10 weeks of creatine monohydrate (Cr) supplementation coupled with resistance training on body composition and strength in women trainees. Twenty-six subjects ingested Cr (n = 13) or a placebo (Pl) (n = 13) at a dose of 0.3 g.kg(-1) and 0.03 g.kg(-1) body mass for the initial 7 days and subsequent 9 weeks, respectively, while performing a resistance training program 4 days per week. Significant increases (p < 0.05) occurred in both groups for lean body mass and 1 repetition maximum (1RM) bench press and incline leg press. There was a significant main effect for training, but there was no significant difference in the total number of repetitions completed after 5 sets of multiple repetitions to exhaustion at 70% of 1RM for bench press and incline leg press for both groups or in the ability to perform a greater training volume (sets x repetitions x load) in the Cr vs. Pl groups over the 10 weeks. The results indicate that Cr supplementation combined with 10 weeks of concurrent resistance training may not improve strength or lean body mass greater than training only. These findings may be a result of nonresponders due to gender differences or a varying biological potential to uptake Cr within the muscle.  相似文献

The present study investigated the responses of leg glucose and protein metabolism during an acute bout of resistance exercise. Seven subjects (5 men, 2 women) were studied at rest and during a strenuous lower body resistance exercise regimen consisting of approximately 8 sets of 10 repetitions of leg press at approximately 75% 1 repetition maximum and 8 sets of 8 repetitions of knee extensions at approximately 80% 1 repetition maximum. L-[ring-2H5]phenylalanine was infused throughout the study for measurement of phenylalanine rates of appearance, disappearance, protein synthesis, and protein breakdown across the leg. Femoral arterial and venous blood samples were collected at rest and during exercise for determination of leg blood flow, concentrations of glucose, lactate, alanine, glutamine, glutamate, leucine, and phenylalanine, and phenylalanine enrichments. Muscle biopsies were obtained at rest and immediately after exercise. Leg blood flow was nearly three times (P <0.009) higher and glucose uptake more than five times higher (P=0.009) during exercise than at rest. Leg lactate release was 86 times higher than rest during the exercise bout. Although whole body phenylalanine rate of appearance, an indicator of whole body protein breakdown, was reduced during exercise; leg phenylalanine rate of appearance, rate of disappearance, protein synthesis, and protein breakdown did not change. Arterial and venous alanine concentrations and glutamate uptake were significantly higher during exercise than at rest. We conclude that lower body resistance exercise potently stimulates leg glucose uptake and lactate release. In addition, muscle protein synthesis is not elevated during a bout of resistance exercise.  相似文献

The physiological equivalents of power output maintenance and recovery during repeated-sprint exercise (RSE) remain to be fully elucidated. In an attempt to improve our understanding of the determinants of RSE performance we therefore aimed to determine its recovery following exhaustive exercise (which affected intramuscular and neural factors) concomitantly with those of intramuscular concentrations of adenosine triphosphate [ATP], phosphocreatine [PCr] and pH values and electromyography (EMG) activity (a proxy for net motor unit activity) changes. Eight young men performed 10, 6-s all-out sprints on a cycle ergometer, interspersed with 30 s of recovery, followed, after 6 min of passive recovery, by five 6-s sprints, again interspersed by 30 s of passive recovery. Biopsies of the vastus lateralis were obtained at rest, immediately after the first 10 sprints and after 6 min of recovery. EMG activity of the vastus lateralis was obtained from surface electrodes throughout exercise. Total work (TW), [ATP], [PCr], pH and EMG amplitude decreased significantly throughout the first ten sprints (P<0.05). After 6 min of recovery, TW during sprint 11 recovered to 86.3±7.7% of sprint 1. ATP and PCr were resynthesized to 92.6±6.0% and 85.3±10.3% of the resting value, respectively, but muscle pH and EMG amplitude remained depressed. PCr resynthesis was correlated with TW done in sprint 11 (r = 0.79, P<0.05) and TW done during sprints 11 to 15 (r = 0.67, P<0.05). There was a ∼2-fold greater decrease in the TW/EMG ratio in the last five sprints (sprint 11 to 15) than in the first five sprints (sprint 1 to 5) resulting in a disproportionate decrease in mechanical power (i.e., TW) in relation to EMG. Thus, we conclude that the inability to produce power output during repeated sprints is mostly mediated by intramuscular fatigue signals probably related with the control of PCr metabolism.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of 11 wk of resistance training to failure vs. nonfailure, followed by an identical 5-wk peaking period of maximal strength and power training for both groups as well as to examine the underlying physiological changes in basal circulating anabolic and catabolic hormones. Forty-two physically active men were matched and then randomly assigned to either a training to failure (RF; n = 14), nonfailure (NRF; n = 15), or control groups (C; n = 13). Muscular and power testing and blood draws to determine basal hormonal concentrations were conducted before the initiation of training (T0), after 6 wk of training (T1), after 11 wk of training (T2), and after 16 wk of training (T3). Both RF and NRF resulted in similar gains in 1-repetition maximum bench press (23 and 23%) and parallel squat (22 and 23%), muscle power output of the arm (27 and 28%) and leg extensor muscles (26 and 29%), and maximal number of repetitions performed during parallel squat (66 and 69%). RF group experienced larger gains in the maximal number of repetitions performed during the bench press. The peaking phase (T2 to T3) after NRF resulted in larger gains in muscle power output of the lower extremities, whereas after RF it resulted in larger gains in the maximal number of repetitions performed during the bench press. Strength training leading to RF resulted in reductions in resting concentrations of IGF-1 and elevations in IGFBP-3, whereas NRF resulted in reduced resting cortisol concentrations and an elevation in resting serum total testosterone concentration. This investigation demonstrated a potential beneficial stimulus of NRF for improving strength and power, especially during the subsequent peaking training period, whereas performing sets to failure resulted in greater gains in local muscular endurance. Elevation in IGFBP-3 after resistance training may have been compensatory to accommodate the reduction in IGF-1 to preserve IGF availability.  相似文献
