In this paper, a previously proposed analytical procedure for the computation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) inside a biological elliptic cylinder model is extended to the case in which the body is illuminated under near-field conditions. The elliptic model is made up of layers of different biological tissues and the source is constituted by a line-current distribution. The recursive procedure in which the field is expressed in terms of Mathieu function is modified to express the incident electromagnetic wave produced by the line current. The new procedure makes it possible to check and validate numerical solutions obtained by accurate numerical techniques for SAR prediction, under more realistic illumination condition.  相似文献

Assessing the whole‐body absorption in a human in a realistic environment requires a statistical approach covering all possible exposure situations. This article describes the development of a statistical multi‐path exposure method for heterogeneous realistic human body models. The method is applied for the 6‐year‐old Virtual Family boy (VFB) exposed to the GSM downlink at 950 MHz. It is shown that the whole‐body SAR does not differ significantly over the different environments at an operating frequency of 950 MHz. Furthermore, the whole‐body SAR in the VFB for multi‐path exposure exceeds the whole‐body SAR for worst‐case single‐incident plane wave exposure by 3.6%. Moreover, the ICNIRP reference levels are not conservative with the basic restrictions in 0.3% of the exposure samples for the VFB at the GSM downlink of 950 MHz. The homogeneous spheroid with the dielectric properties of the head suggested by the IEC underestimates the absorption compared to realistic human body models. Moreover, the variation in the whole‐body SAR for realistic human body models is larger than for homogeneous spheroid models. This is mainly due to the heterogeneity of the tissues and the irregular shape of the realistic human body model compared to homogeneous spheroid human body models. In electromagnetic dosimetry, anatomical human models are commonly obtained by segmentation of magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scans. In this paper, a human head model extracted from thermal infrared images is examined in terms of its applicability to specific absorption rate (SAR) calculations. Since thermal scans are two-dimensional (2D) representation of surface temperature, this allows researchers to overcome the extensive computational demand associated with 3D simulation. The numerical calculations are performed using the finite-difference time-domain method with mesh sizes of 2 mm at 900 MHz plane wave irradiation. The power density of the incident plane wave is assumed to be 10 W/m(2). Computations were compared with a realistic anatomical head model. The results show that although there were marked differences in the local SAR distribution in the various tissues in the two models, the 1 g peak SAR values are approximately similar in the two models.  相似文献

Use of finite element (FE) foot model as a clinical diagnostics tool is likely to improve the specificity of foot injury predictions in the diabetic population. Here we proposed a novel workflow for rapid construction of foot FE model incorporating realistic geometry of metatarsals encapsulated into lumped forefoot’s soft tissues. Custom algorithms were implemented to perform unsupervised segmentation and mesh generation to directly convert CT data into a usable FE model. The automatically generated model provided higher efficiency and comparable numerical accuracy when compared to the model constructed using a traditional solid-based mesh process. The entire procedure uses MATLAB as the main platform, and makes the present approach attractive for creating personalized foot models to be used in clinical studies.  相似文献

Background

Interpreting and controlling bioelectromagnetic phenomena require realistic physiological models and accurate numerical solvers. A semi-realistic model often used in practise is the piecewise constant conductivity model, for which only the interfaces have to be meshed. This simplified model makes it possible to use Boundary Element Methods. Unfortunately, most Boundary Element solutions are confronted with accuracy issues when the conductivity ratio between neighboring tissues is high, as for instance the scalp/skull conductivity ratio in electro-encephalography. To overcome this difficulty, we proposed a new method called the symmetric BEM, which is implemented in the OpenMEEG software. The aim of this paper is to present OpenMEEG, both from the theoretical and the practical point of view, and to compare its performances with other competing software packages.  相似文献

The three-dimensional impedance method was used to estimate specific absorption rate (SAR) in a human-torso model during exposure to the time-varying and static magnetic fields used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Analytical data for discrete tissues as well as the entire torso are presented. Generalized equations were derived that enable calculation of whole-torso SAR over a broad range of conditions. In addition, the impedance method can generate data about internal distributions of SAR, which are needed to predict critical organs that might undergo excessive elevations of temperature. Fair to good agreement was found between impedance-method SAR and those predicted by simple phenomenological models.  相似文献

Delay differential, difference, and partial differential equation models are being used more extensively to explain single-species population oscillations and limit cycle behavior. Ordinary differential equation (ODE) models have been largely ignored. This is because first-order ODE models are inherently monotonic. Certainly this is not usual population behavior in the real world. If it is assumed that the per capita growth rate of a population changes over time as a result of regulating factors impinging on it, then a more realistic biological model results. The model translates into a second-order nonlinear ODE. Such a model can exhibit oscillatory and limit cycle as well as monotonic solutions, i.e., behavior for which non-ODE models have been used to explain. Although first-order ODE models are gross simplifications of real phenomena, ODE models in general should not be disregarded as important analytical tools.  相似文献

This paper deals with the linearization of the full activated sludge model No 1 (ASM1) in the scope of interaction analysis. For consistency, the linearization procedure is developed and validated within the BSM1 simulation benchmark framework. It is based on reaction rate approximation by linear combinations of states. The linear rate models are identified and incorporated in the mass balance equations, yielding a linear locally equivalent to the ASM1 model. Linear models for anoxic and aerated compartments are proposed. It is observed that the presented models track very closely the nonlinear ASM1 responses to various influent data. The key feature of this linearization strategy is that the gotten linear version of the ASM1 model is linear time invariant (LTI) and that it conserves the states biological interpretation and the original ASM1 dimension. It allows, therefore, application of interaction analysis methods and makes it possible to determine motivated control configurations for the ASM1 model.  相似文献

A concise synthesis of valerena-4,7(11)-diene with potent sedative activity was achieved in three steps involving, reduction of carboxylic acid, bromination of the resulting alcohol, and reduction of the bromide from valerenic acid in a 63% total yield. This synthetic method makes it possible to provide further materials for biological testing to realize comprehensive SAR studies.  相似文献

Radio frequency (RF) dosimetry is the quantification of the magnitude and distribution of absorbed electromagnetic energy within biological objects that are exposed to RF fields. At RF, the dosimetric quantity, which is called the specific absorption rate (SAR), is defined as the rate at which energy is absorbed per unit mass. The SAR is determined not only by the incident electromagnetic waves but also by the electrical and geometric characteristics of the irradiated subject and nearby objects. It is related to the internal electric field strength (E) as well as to the electric conductivity and the density of tissues; therefore, it is a suitable dosimetric parameter, even when a mechanism is determined to be “athermal.” SAR distributions are usually determined from measurements in human models, in animal tissues, or from calculations. This tutorial describes experimental techniques that are used commonly to determine SAR distributions along with the SAR limitations and unresolved problems. The methods discussed to obtain point, planar, or whole-body averaged SARs include the use of small E-field probes or measurement of initial rate of temperature rise in an irradiated object. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in specific absorption rate (SAR) in human-head tissues while using nonmagnetic metallic electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes and leads during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A realistic, high resolution (1 mm(3)) head model from individual MRI data was adopted to describe accurately thin tissues, such as bone marrow and skin. The RF power dissipated in the human head was evaluated using the FDTD algorithm. Both surface and bird cage coils were used. The following numbers of EEG electrodes/leads were considered: 16, 31, 62, and 124. Simulations were performed at 128 and 300 MHz. The difference in SAR between the electrodes/leads and no-electrodes conditions was greater with the bird cage coil than with the surface coil. The peak 1 g averaged SAR values were highest at 124 electrodes, increasing to as much as two orders of magnitude (x172.3) at 300 MHz compared to the original value. At 300 MHz, there was a fourfold (x3.6) increase of SAR averaged over the bone marrow, and a sevenfold (x7.4) increase in the skin. At 128 MHz, there was a fivefold (x5.6) increase of whole head SAR. Head models were obtained from two different subjects, with an inter-subject whole head SAR variability of 3%. .  相似文献

Current methodology in real-time Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis performs well provided PCR efficiency remains constant over reactions. Yet, small changes in efficiency can lead to large quantification errors. Particularly in biological samples, the possible presence of inhibitors forms a challenge. We present a new approach to single reaction efficiency calculation, called Full Process Kinetics-PCR (FPK-PCR). It combines a kinetically more realistic model with flexible adaptation to the full range of data. By reconstructing the entire chain of cycle efficiencies, rather than restricting the focus on a 'window of application', one extracts additional information and loses a level of arbitrariness. The maximal efficiency estimates returned by the model are comparable in accuracy and precision to both the golden standard of serial dilution and other single reaction efficiency methods. The cycle-to-cycle changes in efficiency, as described by the FPK-PCR procedure, stay considerably closer to the data than those from other S-shaped models. The assessment of individual cycle efficiencies returns more information than other single efficiency methods. It allows in-depth interpretation of real-time PCR data and reconstruction of the fluorescence data, providing quality control. Finally, by implementing a global efficiency model, reproducibility is improved as the selection of a window of application is avoided.  相似文献

Previous studies comparing SAR difference in the head of children and adults used highly simplified generic models or half-wave dipole antennas. The objective of this study was to investigate the SAR difference in the head of children and adults using realistic EMF sources based on CAD models of commercial mobile phones. Four MRI-based head phantoms were used in the study. CAD models of Nokia 8310 and 6630 mobile phones were used as exposure sources. Commercially available FDTD software was used for the SAR calculations. SAR values were simulated at frequencies 900 MHz and 1747 MHz for Nokia 8310, and 900 MHz, 1747 MHz and 1950 MHz for Nokia 6630. The main finding of this study was that the SAR distribution/variation in the head models highly depends on the structure of the antenna and phone model, which suggests that the type of the exposure source is the main parameter in EMF exposure studies to be focused on. Although the previous findings regarding significant role of the anatomy of the head, phone position, frequency, local tissue inhomogeneity and tissue composition specifically in the exposed area on SAR difference were confirmed, the SAR values and SAR distributions caused by generic source models cannot be extrapolated to the real device exposures. The general conclusion is that from a volume averaged SAR point of view, no systematic differences between child and adult heads were found.  相似文献

The comparison of theoretical and experimental estimates of the mechanical power requirement for flight is currently impossible owing to the absence of complete experimental data based on mechanical power, as opposed to measurements of metabolic rates. Nevertheless, comparisons of measured and predicted characteristic speeds, and inferred power curves are frequently made, despite the total absence of uncertainty estimates of the theoretically predicted quantities. Here the method for correct calculation of uncertainty estimates in mechanical power models is outlined in detail, and analytical and numerical results are derived for realistic examples. The sensitivity of the calculated variations in power requirement varies greatly among the independent variables, and the practical and theoretical consequences of this variation are discussed. Pending the arrival of appropriate experimental measurements, it is now possible, in principle, to make quantitative comparisons with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Predictive models of tumor response based on heterogeneity metrics in medical images, such as textural features, are highly suggestive. However, the demonstrated sensitivity of these features to noise does affect the model being developed. An in-depth analysis of the noise influence on the extraction of texture features was performed based on the assumption that an improvement in information quality can also enhance the predictive model. A heuristic approach was used that recognizes from the beginning that the noise has its own texture and it was analysed how it affects the quantitative signal data. A simple procedure to obtain noise image estimation is shown; one which makes it possible to extract the noise-texture features at each observation. The distance measured between the textural features in signal and estimated noise images allows us to determine the features affected in each observation by the noise and, for example, to exclude some of them from the model. A demonstration was carried out using synthetic images applying realistic noise models found in medical images. Drawn conclusions were applied to a public cohort of clinical images obtained using FDG-PET to show how the predictive model could be improved. A gain in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve between 10 and 20% when noise texture information is used was shown. An improvement between 20 and 30% can be appreciated in the estimated model quality.  相似文献

Complex traits are often governed by more than one trait locus. The first step towards an adequate model for such diseases is a linkage analysis with two trait loci. Such an analysis can be expected to have higher power to detect linkage than a standard single-trait-locus linkage analysis. However, it is crucial to accurately specify the parameters of the two-locus model. Here, we recapitulate the general two-locus model with and without genomic imprinting. We relate heterogeneity, multiplicative, and additive two-locus models to biological or pathophysiological mechanisms, and give the corresponding averaged ("best-fitting") single-trait-locus models for each of the two loci. Furthermore, we derive the two-locus penetrances from the averaged single-locus models, under the assumption of one of the three model classes mentioned above. Using these formulae, if the best-fitting single-locus models are available, investigators may perform a two-trait-locus linkage analysis under a realistic model. This procedure will maximize the power to detect linkage for traits which are governed by two or more loci, and lead to more accurate estimates of the disease-locus positions.  相似文献

An analytical method for free deoxyribonucleotide (nucleoside monophosphate) in the epidermis is presented. Free nucleotides were extracted from tissue using a methylal ethanol mixture. The deoxyribonucleotides were separated using DEAE-cellulose and DBAE-cellulose. The analysis of free deoxyribonucleotides was carried out by high pressure liquid chromatography on a column of Lichrosorb-NH2 with a single buffer of potassium phosphate. The elution order of nucleotides was CMP, AMP, UMP, IMP, GMP, and XMP. This procedure employing high pressure liquid chromatography for the detection of deoxyribonucleotides in the epidermis makes it possible to elucidate the biological characteristics and significance of DNA metabolism in normal epidermis and changes that occur in pathological conditions.  相似文献

Network models of synchronously updated McCulloch-Pitts neurones exhibit complex spatiotemporal patterns that are similar to activities of biological neurones in phase with a periodic local field potential, such as those observed experimentally by Wehr and Laurent (1996, Nature 384, 162-166) in the locust olfactory pathway. Modelling biological neural nets with networks of simple formal units makes the dynamics of the model analytically tractable. It is thus possible to determine the constraints that must be satisfied by its connection matrix in order to make its neurones exhibit a given sequence of activity (see, for instance, Quenet et al., 2001, Neurocomputing 38-40, 831-836). In the present paper, we address the following question: how can one construct a formal network of Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) type neurones that reproduces experimentally observed neuronal codes? A two-step strategy is suggested in the present paper: first, a simple network of binary units is designed, whose activity reproduces the binary experimental codes; second, this model is used as a guide to design a network of more realistic formal HH neurones. We show that such a strategy is indeed fruitful: it allowed us to design a model that reproduces the Wehr-Laurent olfactory codes, and to investigate the robustness of these codes to synaptic noise.  相似文献

Rapid increase in the use of numerical techniques to predict current density or specific absorption rate (SAR) in sophisticated three dimensional anatomical computer models of man and animals has resulted in the need to understand how numerical solutions of the complex electrodynamics equations match with empirical measurements. This aspect is particularly important because different numerical codes and computer models are used in research settings as a guide in designing clinical devices, telecommunication systems, and safety standards. To ensure compliance with safety guidelines during equipment design, manufacturing and maintenance, realistic and accurate models could be used as a bridge between empirical data and actual exposure conditions. Before these tools are transitioned into the hands of health safety officers and system designers, their accuracy and limitations must be verified under a variety of exposure conditions using available analytical and empirical dosimetry techniques. In this paper, empirical validation of SAR values predicted by finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical code on sphere and rat is presented. The results of this study show a good agreement between empirical and theoretical methods and, thus, offer a relatively high confidence in SAR predictions obtained from digital anatomical models based on the FDTD numerical code.  相似文献
