Hand preference is well observed in humans and some primates. Unlike many other primates, however, humans show a consistent hand preference across a variety of tasks, and a distinct right-handed skew at the population level. Although there are a moderate number of published studies, primate hand preference literature is unbalanced by the large number of studies on only a few species. No previous studies have addressed hand preference in white-faced sakis (WFS; Pithecia pithecia). We followed three habituated groups of wild WFS in Suriname and recorded individual hand preference for six different manual behaviors. There was no consistent hand preference across a range of uni-manual behaviors for any individual. Likewise, there were significantly more ambidextrous individuals in the population than expected (χ(2) (df = 2) = 11.2, P = 0.004) and thus, no population level hand preference. Our findings contribute baseline data to the debate of primate hand lateralization, and support the notion that lateralization of hand function does not characterize all species. 相似文献

Wild white-faced sakis (Pithecia pithecia) ingest primarily seeds that provide a diet that is lipid-rich and moderately high in dietary fiber. Although little anatomical information is available on sakis, evidence from other vertebrate seed predators suggests that such a diet is correlated with adaptations in gut morphology or physiology. Milton [1984] reported a 20 hr transit time (TT=transit time or time of first appearance in feces) of a particulate marker for a single monk saki (Pithecia monachus). This suggests that TT for Pithecia sakis may be four to five times longer than what has been reported for soft-fruit-eating platyrrhines, such as Ateles and Cebus. During a captive study, we calculated an average TT of 14.7+/-0.4 hr (n=5 trials started in the evening) for a chromic oxide (Cr(2)O(3)) marker that follows liquid digesta and TTs of 14.5 hr (trial started the previous evening) and 23.0 hr (trial started the previous morning) for two trials using particulate markers. Mean retention time (MRT) for the liquid marker ranged from 15.3 hr to 37.7 hr in four trials that lasted longer than 90 hr. Marker recovery was incomplete for the particulate markers in these trials, and thus MRT could only be determined for the liquid phase marker. Three 5-day trials on a low-fiber, blended diet revealed high fiber fraction digestibilities (neutral detergent fiber (NDF)=77.4% and acid detergent fiber (ADF)=74.4%). Data collected for this study and nutritional data from wild sakis suggest that pitheciin seed predators may have a potential for fiber digestibility that is intermediate between ripe-pulp frugivores and folivores. 相似文献

Among over 40 mammal species threatened by the filling of a hydroelectric dam reservoir in French Guiana, three species of primates have been translocated, comprising 124 red howler monkeys, six white-faced sakis, and 95 golden-handed tamarins. Health status of the animals was evaluated by direct physical examination and by hematological, biochemical, virological, and parasitological surveys of collected blood. The physical condition of the howlers was slightly worse toward the end of the capture period, but that of sakis and tamarins remained satisfactory. Several ectoparasites (ticks, larvae of dipterous insects, fleas, and lice) were collected, and various wounds, apparently nondebilitating, were recorded in howlers. Hematological and biochemical profiles determined for the three species revealed a slight anemia in howlers. Entamoeba, Strongyloides, and Trypanoxyurus were common in fecal samples of howlers. A survey of blood smears from the three species revealed infection by several types of microfilaria, Trypanosoma rangeli-like and Plasmodium brasilianum in all three, and Trypanosoma cruzi-like in howlers. These infections had no significant impact on the health status or the hematological profiles. Serologic investigations revealed occasional reactions against Toxoplasma gondii, a strong anti-Plasmodium response in the two Cebidae species, and a weaker one in tamarins. Attempts to isolate arbovirus failed, but antibody responses to Mayaro and yellow fever viruses were strong, especially in the howlers. A strong correlation between age and serological status led to a better understanding of the epidemic cycles. Our survey indicates French Guianan primates are reservoirs for several anthropozoonoses, including malaria, Chagas disease, and arboviruses. 相似文献

Field observations of two sympatric pitheciine species reveal that the positional repertoire of the white-faced saki, Pithecia pithecia, is dominated by leaping behaviors, whereas the bearded saki, Chiropotes satanas, is predominantly quadrupedal. Examination and comparison of the postcranial skeletal morphologies and limb proportions of these species display numerous features associated with their respective locomotor behaviors. These observations accord with associations found in other primate and mammalian groups and with predictions based on theoretical and experimental biomechanics. Preliminary observations of the skeletal morphology of Cacajao calvus demonstrate a marked similarity to that of Chiropotes. The fossil platyrrhine Cebupithecia sarmientoi displays greater similarity to Pithecia, suggesting that its positional repertoire also included significant leaping and clinging behaviors. 相似文献

A database providing information on mosquito specimens (Arthropoda: Diptera: Culicidae) collected in French Guiana is presented. Field collections were initiated in 2013 under the auspices of the CEnter for the study of Biodiversity in Amazonia (CEBA: http://www.labexceba.fr/en/). This study is part of an ongoing process aiming to understand the distribution of mosquitoes, including vector species, across French Guiana. Occurrences are recorded after each collecting trip in a database managed by the laboratory Evolution et Diversité Biologique
(EDB), Toulouse, France. The dataset is updated monthly and is available online. Voucher specimens and their associated DNA are stored at the laboratory Ecologie des Forêts de Guyane
(Ecofog), Kourou, French Guiana. The latest version of the dataset is accessible through EDB’s Integrated Publication Toolkit at http://130.120.204.55:8080/ipt/resource.do?r=mosquitoes_of_french_guiana or through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility data portal at http://www.gbif.org/dataset/5a8aa2ad-261c-4f61-a98e-26dd752fe1c5 It can also be viewed through the Guyanensis platform at http://guyanensis.ups-tlse.fr 相似文献

Phosphate was fractionated in Guianese mangrove sediments. Fe(OOH)P was extracted using a Ca-EDTA + Na-dithionite solution buffered at pH 8. CaCO3P was extracted using Na2-EDTA solution at pH 4.5. Next, Acid Soluble Organic Phosphate (ASOP) was extracted by H2SO4 0.5 N. Finally, Residual Organic Phosphate (ROP) was digested with H2SO4 + H2O2. Four representative mangrove stages have been studied: sea edge pioneer mangroves, mature coastal mangroves, mixed riverine mangroves, and declining to dead mangroves. The sum of the P-fractions varied between 638 to 804 g g-1 in pioneer and mixed mangroves respectively. In all the stages, the percentage of inorganic phosphate was larger than 50% of the total P. Fe(OOH)P varied between 221 (pioneer mangrove) to 426 g g-1 (dead mangrove). CaCO3P varied between 75 to 102 g g-1 in mixed, dead or mature mangroves and attained 125 g g-1 in pioneer mangrove. The sum of the concentrations of organic phosphate (ASOP + ROP) increased markedly from the dead mangrove (189 g g-1) to the mixed mangrove (380 g g-1). Guianese mangroves, are relatively rich in total phosphate, possibly because they are narrowly related to the 'Amazon dispersal system. Each mangrove stage can be characterised by a prevailing form of phosphate. The concentrations of these different forms were ascribed to the marked relations with the seawater which controls import or export of suspended matters and to the wave action which controls the resuspension of the sediments and subsequently exchange of phosphate between the suspended matter and the water column. 相似文献

Mixed-species primate exhibits are becoming more common in zoological parks as a means to display a diverse array of animals both more naturalistically and with more economy of space. Here, we describe behavioral changes during the introduction process of a pair of pied tamarins (Saguinus bicolor) to an established group of black howler monkeys (Allouatta caraya) and white-faced saki monkeys (Pithecia pithecia). Data were collected during six phases, representing introductions among the various species and to exhibit space and off-exhibit holding. The pied tamarins were consistently the most active of the three species. Although activity levels of the howler and saki monkeys remained constant throughout, that of the tamarins declined as the introduction progressed. Several episodes of aggression between the tamarins and the sakis were observed, but did not coincide with patterns predicted by previous intra-specific introductions. The three-species mix remained stable for several months; however, escalating aggression ultimately led to the removal of the sakis from the mixed-species exhibit. Despite our mixed results, we contend that only through continued trials, coupled with careful and systematic monitoring, can we ultimately identify stable mixes of species. 相似文献

Spider monkeys (Ateles) frequently use suspensory locomotion and postures, and their postcranial morphology suggests convergence with extant hominoids in canopy and food utilization. Previous studies of positional behavior in Ateles, have produced variable rates in the use of different positional activities. I investigated the positional behavior of black spider monkeys (Ateles paniscus) in a wet rain forest in French Guiana, and assessed differences in the rates of use of positional modes across studies. I also discuss the significance of suspensory activities in forest utilization. In French Guiana, Ateles confined travel and feeding locomotion on small and medium-sized moderately inclined supports in the main canopy. Tail-arm brachiation and clamber were their main traveling modes, while clamber was the dominant feeding locomotor mode. Small horizontal supports were predominant during their feeding. Suspensory postures accounted for more than half of feeding bouts, with tail-hang and tail-hind limb(s) hang being the dominant postures. Feeding occurred largely in tree crown peripheries with the prehensile tail anchored frequently above the monkey. They usually collected food items below or at the same level as the body. There is no difference among the postures they used to acquire and eat young leaves and fruit. My results agree with reports on the positional behavior of different species of spider monkeys at other sites. Despite the use of different methods, the same species exhibited more or less similar profiles in similar forests. Interspecific differences could be associated with morphological differences. Moreover, intraspecific differences could be attributed to forest structure. The findings suggest that the major part of biological information is independent of methods used in the several studies. Suspensory behavior facilitates the exploitation of the forest canopy by shortening traveling pathways between and within trees, by enabling faster travel for the better exploitation of patchy food sources and by providing access to food in the flexible terminal twigs. 相似文献

Little is known regarding the reproductive biology of the white-faced saki. Although sakis have been in zoos since the mid-1970s, little attention has been paid to the reproductive biology of this threatened species. This study describes the results of a 3-year study of the reproduction of the white-faced saki in captivity. Using noninvasive methods to determine levels of estrone conjugates (E1C) and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG) in daily urine samples, we have characterized the female reproductive cycle of this species. Nonconceptive ovarian cycles were 16.95 ± 1.57 (SD) days, gestational length was 146.1 ± 5.2 (SD) days, and the length of lactationally induced infertility varied among females but averaged 163 ± 40.6 (SD) days. Attempts to accelerate puberty by pairing a young female with an adult male was without effect. Puberty occurred at 32 months of age in one female. This study provides information that enhances our understanding of the reproductive biology of this species. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The growth rates of Leporinus friderici (Bloch, 1794) in four populations from four rivers of French Guiana are compared. According to a statistical analysis of growth curves using the method of maximum likelihood with the Gauss–Markardt algorithm, a marked difference is observed in the growth of the different samples which is attributed to the year of capture rather than to the geographical origin of fishes. It is demonstrated that the main factor affecting growth performances is the length of the rainy season, which corresponds for this species to the feeding period. 相似文献

A family of three white-faced saki monkeys (Pithecia pithecia pithecia) died 48-96 hours after the onset of anorexia, nasal discharge, pyrexia and oral ulceration. One animal also had clonic seizures. Lesions found post-mortem consisted of oral and esophageal ulcers, hepatic and intestinal necrosis, meningoencephalitis and sporadic neuronal necrosis. Intranuclear inclusion bodies and syncytial cells were present in oral lesions and affected areas of liver. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) was identified as the etiology of disease by virus isolation, polymerase chain reaction, or in situ hybridization in all three animals. Immunohistochemistry for detection of apoptotic DNA and activated caspase-3 showed significant levels of apoptosis in oral and liver lesions and occasional apoptotic neurons in the brain. These findings demonstrate the vulnerability of white-faced saki monkeys to HSV-1 and provide initial insight into the pathogenesis of fatal HSV-1-induced disease, indicating that apoptosis plays a significant role in cell death. 相似文献

I studied brown capuchins (Cebus apella)in primary forest in French Guiana. They displayed different feeding and ranging patterns in response to changes in fruit
availability and distribution. When fruit was scarce and patchily distributed, foliage/stem feeding and invertebrate foraging
was high, and capuchins limited their daily movement to <2 km, focusing on large fruit patches. When fruit was in average
supply and scattered throughout the forest, the proportions of foliage/stems and invertebrates in the diet decreased, and
the day range length increased to 2.8 km. When fruit was abundant and widespread, foliage/stems were rarely eaten, while invertebrate
foraging increased, and. the daily locomotor distance was reduced to 2 km. 相似文献

An analysis of the flowering plant flora of a lowland moist forest in central French Guiana reveals 25 species with adaptations
for epizoochorous dispersal by barbs, hooks, or spines (stick-tights). This represents 1.5% of the flowering plant flora.
Stick-tights are represented among the monocotyledons of the flora of central French Guiana by five species of Poaceae. The
Fabaceae and Asteraceae, each with six species with stick-tight dispersal, are the richest families of flowering plants in
terms of stick-tight dispersal in central French Guiana. This region possesses numerous potential mammal and bird dispersal
agents, therefore it is a puzzle why stick-tight dispersal, especially among species of the canopy, is not more frequent. 相似文献

We report the feeding behavior and food preferences of a troop of red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) over two annual cycles in primary tropical rain forest in French Guiana. The monkeys used 195 plant species from 47 families as food. Major food categories were young leaves (54%), mature fruits (21.5%), and flowers (12.6%). Other food categories included old leaves, immature fruits, termitarium soil, bark, and moss. The monkeys were less selective than other howler groups, since 19 plant species contributed 1% to their diet and accounted for only 35.7% of their total diet. The Sapotaceae was the most frequently eaten plant family and represented >10% of the total diet. 相似文献

Variations in mitochondrial DNA characters were used to characterize two morphologically similar and sympatric species of Neotropical terrestrial rodents of the genus Proechimys (Mammalia: Echimyidae). We sequenced both cytochrome b (1140 pb) and part of the control region (445 pb) from four individuals of P. cuvieri and five of P. cayennensis from French Guiana, which allowed us to depict intra- and inter-specific patterns of variation. The phylogenetic relationships between the nine sequences evidence the monophyly of each species, and illustrate that more polymorphism might exist within P. cuvieri than within P. cayennensis. By developing species-specific primers to amplify a fragment of the cytochrome b gene, we were able to identify 50 individuals of Proechimys spp. caught in two localities of French Guiana. In both sites of primary rainforests, we showed that the two species live in syntopy, and this observation emphasizes the need to document ecological differences which should exist in order to diminish inter-specific competition. 相似文献
