The early marine migration of 55 Atlantic salmon post‐smolts tagged with acoustic transmitters was automatically monitored using 13 to 25 km long arrays of receivers deployed inside the Bay of Fundy, a coastal system on the east coast of Canada. The survival of post‐smolts from groups with short‐ and long‐term transmitters in coastal habitat up to 10 km from the river was 92 to 100%, indicating a successful transition to salt water and departure. Migration for 68 to 77% of post‐smolts followed a direct route and it was rapid (transit time usually <12 h). Post‐smolts initially migrated in a south to south‐west direction ( i.e . orientation towards the mouth of the bay) and they were aggregated near the coast. Post‐smolts with long‐term transmitters were monitored 20 km from the river where they continued to be aggregated, moving near the coast through a 'common corridor', and their survival to that point was at least 84%. Post‐smolts from both groups travelled heading out of the coastal system during ebb tides. Flood tides interrupted migration, and they caused changes in travel direction and delays in departure for post‐smolts not leaving by a direct route. Monitoring of coastal habitat inside the Bay of Fundy intercepted 62% of migrating post‐smolts with long‐term transmitters returning after an initial absence of 2 to 22 days. Returning post‐smolts displayed a resident behaviour, using the habitat monitored inside the Bay of Fundy during July and August. 相似文献

Hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar ( n = 25) and wild anadromous brown trout (sea trout) Salmo trutta ( n = 15) smolts were tagged with coded acoustic transmitters and released at the mouth of the River Eira on the west coast of Norway. Data logging receivers recorded the fish during their outward migration at 9, 32, 48 and 77 km from the release site. Seventeen Atlantic salmon (68%) and eight sea trout (53%) were recorded after release. Mean migratory speeds between different receiver sites ranged from 0·49 to 1·82 body lengths (total length) per second (bl s−1 ) for Atlantic salmon and 0·11–2·60 bl s−1 for sea trout. Atlantic salmon were recorded 9, 48 and 77 km from the river mouth on average 28, 65 and 83 h after release, respectively. Sea trout were recorded 9 km from the release site 438 h after release. Only four (23%) sea trout were detected in the outer part of the fjord system, while the rest of the fish seemed to stay in the inner fjord system. The Atlantic salmon stayed for a longer time in the inner part than in the outer parts of the fjord system, but distinct from sea trout, migrated through the whole fjord system into the ocean. 相似文献

Feeding activity of migrating wild Atlantic salmon smolts was investigated in different types of tributaries of the River Teno, northernmost Finland. General feeding activity and the amount of surface prey in the stomachs were correlated inversely with proportion of habitats with high water velocity in the tributaries. 相似文献

What little is known about the seaward migration of Salmo salar smolt migration through standing waters indicates that it is both slow and results in high mortality rates, compared with riverine migration. This may be partly because smolts in lakes need to swim more actively and require more complex directional cues than they do in rivers. In this telemetry study of smolt migration through Loch Lomond, S. salar smolts made repeated movements in directions away from the outflowing river, which considerably increased migration time. 相似文献

Smolt size in relation to age at first maturity of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar): the role of lacustrine habitat 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Back-calculated growth and size of Atlantic salmon smolts were compared in two groups of river systems in Newfoundland. One group consisted of rivers dominated by lacustrine habitats while the other had rivers characterized by fluvial habitats. Back-calculated length at each age and smolt size was significantly higher for the rivers dominated by lacustrine habitats. Associated with this was a lower proportion of maiden large salmon in adult returns. These findings are discussed in relation to density in fresh water, environmental conditions at sea, and life-history strategy. 相似文献

On transfer to sea water for 45 days, the return of appetite was later and growth rates tended to be lower for triploid Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar , reared together with diploid Atlantic salmon. All mortalities comprised of triploid salmon (29%) and were attributable to failed smolt syndrome. No correlation was found between the growth of diploid or triploid fish in fresh water and their subsequent growth on transfer to sea water. 相似文献

The recapture rate and survival of hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar stocked as 1 year‐old parr (semi‐wild) with that of hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon stocked as 2 year‐old smolts and wild smolts of Atlantic salmon in the northern Baltic Sea were compared. This was done through tagging experiments carried out in 1986–1988 and 1992. The recapture rate of the semi‐wild groups varied from 1·0 to 13·1%, being similar in 3 tagging years and lower in 1 year than that of the wild groups (1·7–17·0%). The recapture rate of the semi‐wild groups was similar (in 2 years) or higher (in 2 years) than that of the hatchery‐reared groups stocked as smolts (1·3–6·3%). The survival of semi‐wild smolts during the sea migration was as high as that of wild Atlantic salmon of an equal size and two to three times higher than hatchery‐reared Atlantic salmon stocked as smolts. The survival rate was positively associated with smolt size. The suitability of hatchery‐reared parr and smolts in the management of reduced Atlantic salmon stocks is compared. 相似文献

Until July, post-smolt salmon Salmo salar ( n =337; 129–375 mm L T , mean 225 mm) in the Bothnian Sea relied largely on surface fauna (mainly terrestrial insects). From August onwards, fish was the principal food type. The smallest piscivorous post-smolts were <200 mm, but the main shift to piscivory occurred at sizes of 240–320 mm. Piscivory was promoted by a large smolt size. Almost all one-sea-winter (1-SW) salmon ( n =316; 278–524 mm, mean 397 mm) were piscivorous. Over 70% of the post-smolt and 96% of the 1-SW salmon with identifiable fish species in their stomachs had preyed on herring Clupea harengus. Other fish prey included the ten-spined Pungitius pungitius and three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteusaculeatus but no sprats Sprattus sprattus. The results support earlier observations of a close relationship between recruitment of herring and production of salmon in the Bothnian Sea, and of the crucial role of smolt size in determining the ability of feeding salmon for utilizing the food resources of the area. 相似文献

The possibility of using intense sound as an acoustic barrier for downstream migrating smolt of the Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) was studied by observing, the reactions of smolt to 10 and 150 Hz sounds in a small river. At the observation site the river branched into a main course and a minor channel, the latter rejoining the main stream after 30 m. The sound sources were positioned at the lower end of the channel. The number of smolt re-entering the mam stream at the lower end of the channel was recorded during alternating periods with and without sound. Intense 150 Hz sound had no observable effects on the smolt, even at intensities 114 dB above the hearing threshold at this frequency. At intensities above 1.0. 10−2 ms−2 the 10 Hz sound was an effective deterrent for the smolt, which turned and left the channel at the upstream branching point. 相似文献

The greatest numbers of Atlantic salmon smolts were caught at Uskmouth power station during the day on the flood tide and the least on an ebbing night tide. Catch rates during the day on an ebb tide and at night on a flood tide represented an intermediate state. The results, together with tracking data, suggest that salmon smolts prefer to migrate seaward through the lower Usk estuary during the night Oncc an ebbing tide. 相似文献

The effects of size and previous sexual maturity on downstream migration in two-summer-old Baltic salmon were studied during their normal seaward migratory period in spring. We used an automatic PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tag monitoring system for individual recognition of tagged fish. Size affected the probability of migration among both previously immature and previously mature males while there was no such relationship among females. Nearly all females and 63.6% of the previously immature males migrated during the smolting period, while only 24.5% of the previously mature males did. In migrating fish the individual activity level increased from almost zero in May to about 450 antenna passages per day in mid June, coinciding with a pronounced increase in ambient water temperature. During the period of increasing activity in early June the fish changed from night activity to day activity and finally activity all day and night. The fish moved downstream in schools but no specific school size dominated. This paper demonstrates the strong effect of body size and previous sexual maturity on the probability of migration. 相似文献

A method is described for determining the expected reproductive success (gonadal mass of a returning fish times the probability of surviving to return) and expected fecundity of salmonids as a function of smolt size. Application of the method requires data relating (i) return weight and smolt size; (ii) probability of survival and smolt size; (iii) probability of return after one or two sea winters and smolt size; and (iv) gonads and return weight. Although there exists no published data set that contains all of this information, it is possible to piece together enough information from published sources on female Atlantic salmon to demonstrate the feasibility of the method, with the goal of encouraging the publication of datasets that will allow meaningful calculations for a single river. Thus, one should not expect general predictions about Atlantic salmon, but once local conditions are taken into account, it will be possible to predict the relationships between smolt size and expected fecundity or expected reproductive success. 相似文献

Previous studies of feeding rhythms in post-smolt Atlantic salmon Salmo salar have produced variable results. Therefore, the present study was performed to clarify the source of these differences and to examine size-related variation in daily feeding patterns. A small group of hatchery reared post-smolts was kept in an indoor seawater tank under conditions of constant photoperiod and light intensity, and negligible diurnal variation in water temperature. Feeding responses were monitored by video camera throughout the day. The resultant feeding pattern for the population mirrored an earlier study, with the highest levels of feeding activity in the early morning and late evening. Differences between this and other studies may be due to variation in climate, season or life-history stage. Daily feeding patterns were size-dependent. The largest fish fed at a relatively constant level through the day, medium-sized fish fed in a pattern similar to that described above for the population and small fish fed most at first and last light. These differences were due probably to the effect of competitive interactions upon fish of different sizes. 相似文献

The effects of initial length and body curvature on shrinkage of juvenile Atlantic salmon during freezing 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fork length was measured in two groups of salmon parr (32–139 mm, frozen in a straight posture and frozen in a curved posture) before (L1 ) and after (L2 ) freezing and thawing. All the fish shrank. The decrease in length was significantly greater in the curved fish than the straight fish. The absolute reduction in length (L1 –L2 ) was related directly to L1 , whereas the percentage reduction in length [(L1 –L2 )/L1 × 100] was related inversely to L1 . 相似文献

The relationships between a number of environmental variables and the number of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts migrating in the Burrishoole system, western Ireland, were examined over a 30 year period from 1970 to 2000. The number of Atlantic salmon smolts recorded migrating downstream decreased significantly from an annual mean of 11 579 in the 1970s to a mean of 6272 in the 1990s. The primary factor in the decline in Atlantic salmon numbers was a consistent decline in the number of returning adults from the 1970s until the mid 1990s. Timing of the smolt migrations (runs) was consistent throughout the three decades. The mean durations of the smolt runs were 102·1, 92·6 and 103·2 days for the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s respectively. Mean surface water temperatures at key points in the smolt run for the three decades were also similar. Mean water temperature values were 5·4, 5·1 and 5·3° C at the start of the smolt runs and 15·2, 14·9 and 15·3° C at the end of the smolt runs in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s respectively. Multivariate analysis identified two groups of environmental variables which had a significant influence on the daily smolt catch. One group of variables dominated by photoperiod and temperature operated prior to the smolt run and was considered to regulate the development of smoltification. The second group of variables dominated by total light and water level operated within the smolt run and was considered to control daily smolt migration. 相似文献

Otolith and somatic growth rates in Atlantic salmon parr, Salmo salar L: evidence against coupling 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
It is often assumed that otolith growth is in some way dependent on somatic growth (i.e. that the two processes are coupled). We examined the relationships between sagitta radius and fork length in 0+ Atlantic salmon parr that would subsequently smolt aged 1 + (UMG fish) or 2+ (LMG fish). Repeated measurements of fork lengths of individually marked parr, taken over a 211-day period from first feeding, were compared to sagitta radii on the same measuring dates (obtained by analysis of daily increments). The results showed that there was a linear relationship between fork length and otolith radius in UMG parr. However, this was not true for LMG parr. These fish enter a state of natural anorexia in their first autumn (despite excess food), but their otoliths continued to grow at the same rate despite the virtual cessation of somatic growth; they had therefore developed disproportionately large otoliths by the end of the study period. The relative growth rates of soma and otoliths first changed in LMG fish in late July/early August; this is the most precise estimate yet obtained of the timing of divergence in the developmental pathways of UMG and LMG parr. The rate of sagitta accretion was consistently lower in LMG parr, possibly indicating a lower metabolic rate in these fish. The results are discussed in relation to previous theories of the relationship between otolith and somatic growth. 相似文献

The post spawning behaviour of sea trout Salmo trutta was studied over a 2 year period in the river and estuary of the River Fowey, south‐west England. Forty‐five sea trout kelts were trapped immediately after spawning in December and intraperitoneally tagged with miniature acoustic transmitters. The subsequent emigration into coastal waters was monitored using acoustic receivers deployed throughout the river catchment. The levels of gill Na+K+ATPase activity in sea trout kelts sampled at the same time as the tagged fish were within the range of 2·5 to 4·5 μmol Pi per mg protein per h indicating that the post‐spawning fish were not physiologically adapted to salt water. The tagged kelts were resident in fresh water between 4 and 70 days before entering the estuary. Sixty two per cent of the tagged kelts subsequently migrated successfully into coastal waters, with a higher success rate for male fish (75%) than females (58%). There was a significant size related difference in the run‐timing of the kelts with the larger fish moving more quickly into coastal waters after spawning than smaller fish. Seaward migration within fresh water was predominantly nocturnal and generally occurred in conjunction with increasing river discharge and rising water temperature. Migration through the estuary continued to be predominantly nocturnal and occurred during an ebbing tide. Residency within the estuary varied amongst individuals although it was invariably short, with most fish moving out into coastal waters within one to two tidal cycles. Five tagged kelts returned from the coastal zone and re‐entered fresh water during April and June. Marine residence time varied between 89 and 145 days (mean 118 days) and the minimum estimated marine survival was c. 18%. One of these sea trout was subsequently recaptured after successfully spawning in the vicinity where it had been previously tagged demonstrating a degree of spawning site fidelity. 相似文献

Daily feeding patterns of tank-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr under ambient conditions and their relationship with patterns of aggression were investigated during spring and autumn. A single, early afternoon feeding peak was observed during spring but no consistent pattern emerged from the autumn trial (fish did tend to feed in synchrony, even though the population's feeding pattern varied between days). Aggression was highest at first light during both spring and autumn, reducing thereafter throughout the day. Feeding and aggression were out of phase during spring, with the level of feeding increasing as aggression decreased. It is suggested that the high levels of early morning aggression are associated with re-establishment of the social order that breaks down after a period of darkness; in the spring this may have inhibited feeding. 相似文献
