Two prominent frequency components designated f1 and f2 have been identified in the visual evoked response to the transient presentation of sinusoidal luminance gratings in the range of 0.5–8 c/deg. The components occur at temporal frequencies below the alpha band, with the f1 frequency roughly half that of the f2 frequency. The f1 component is largest at low spatial frequencies with f2 becoming progressively dominant as spatial frequency is increased. The frequency and amplitude of f1 and f2 change substantially over the time course of the response. This has been studied by calculating the temporal frequency spectrum of the transient evoked potential over successive short-time epochs running through the response. Using this technique, the response is shown to consist of narrow- and frequency peaks or ‘formants’ emerging at different times after stimulus onset. These formants occur at frequencies other than those of the spontaneous EEG and undergo changes in frequency and amplitude over the time course of the response. Two spectrum analysis techniques were employed: the Discrete Fourier Transform and Linear Predictive Coding. Frequency components were successfully identified in single-trial responses using the LPC technique.  相似文献

Pattern electroretinograms (P-ERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to 4 Hz alternating square-wave gratings were simultaneously recorded in 23 subjects. Responses were Fourier analyzed and amplitude and phase of the 2nd and 4th temporal harmonics were measured. The spatial frequency-amplitude function of the P-ERG 2nd harmonic component displayed either a bandpass tuning behavior, or a low-pass behavior. The peak amplitude for subjects with bandpass tuning was at 1.5 c/deg. The phase of the P-ERG 2nd harmonic decreased monotonically as spatial frequency increased. The VEP 2nd harmonic had a bimodal spatial frequency function with a peak at 3 c/deg and a second increase at spatial frequencies below 1 c/deg, regardless of the P-ERG characteristics. The phase of VEP 2nd and 4th harmonic had an inverted U-shaped function with peak at 3 c/deg and 1.5 c/deg respectively.Comparison of simultaneously recorded P-ERG and VEP spatial frequency functions demonstrated different tuning behavior for cortical and retinal responses. It is concluded that the proposed technique permits the separate analysis of retinal and cortical processing of visual information. The 2nd and 4th harmonic components of VEP behave independently of each other suggesting they may be generated by different subsystems.  相似文献

Influence of music on motor reaction time (RT) was studied. Warning and triggering stimuli were presented either in the left or in the right visual fields. RT was recorded when playing classical or variety music; control sessions were not accompanied by music. Music shortened RT, and its stimulating effect was the stronger the longer were the initial RTs without music. The influence of variety music was more effective than of the classic one. RT was shortened more when the triggering stimulus was presented in the left visual field. This phenomenon is considered to be an evidence of predominant influence of music on the right cerebral hemisphere due to greater activation from emotional structures.  相似文献

An ignored region of the visual field might be monitored by an intermittent full visual analysis or by a more continuous but restricted analysis. We investigated which type of process is more likely in early vision by studying the effects of diverting attention on adaptation to a range of spatial (0.5, 2, 4. and 6 c/deg) and temporal (1.5 and 10 Hz) frequencies. During adaptation, subjects either fixated an unchanging digit (normal attention). or named the sequence of changing digits which formed the fixation point (diverted). The test field was always a static version of the adapting field, and the strength of adaptation was measured through the velocity and duration of subsequent Motion Aftereffects (MAEs). When attention during adaptation was normal MAE durations rose with spatial frequency for the 1.5 Hz stimuli, and declined with spatial frequency for the 10 Hz stimuli. When attention was diverted from the 10 Hz stimuli, MAE durations and velocities fell by a similar amount at all spatial frequencies. However, for the 1.5 Hz stimuli, the effects of diversion were very small at 0.5 c/deg, and rose progressively with spatial frequency, so that MAE reductions were largest at 6 c/deg. It appears that diversion hardly affects the encoding of coarse, slow stimuli, but attenuates the encoding of finer and/or faster stimuli. This is consistent with the idea that during diversion the visual system monitors the scene continuously, but over a restricted range of spatial and temporal scales.  相似文献

The presentation of a remote – but not proximal – distractor concurrent with target onset increases prosaccade reaction times (RT) (i.e., the remote distractor effect: RDE). The competitive integration model asserts that the RDE represents the time required to resolve the conflict for a common saccade threshold between target- and distractor-related saccade generating commands in the superior colliculus. To our knowledge however, no previous research has examined whether remote and proximal distractors differentially influence antisaccade RTs. This represents a notable question because antisaccades require decoupling of the spatial relations between stimulus and response (SR) and therefore provide a basis for determining whether the sensory- and/or motor-related features of a distractor influence response planning. Participants completed pro- and antisaccades in a target-only condition and conditions wherein the target was concurrently presented with a proximal or remote distractor. As expected, prosaccade RTs elicited a reliable RDE. In contrast, antisaccade RTs were increased independent of the distractor’s spatial location and the magnitude of the effect was comparable across each distractor location. Thus, distractor-related antisaccade RT costs are not accounted for by a competitive integration between conflicting saccade generating commands. Instead, we propose that a visual distractor increases uncertainty related to the evocation of the response-selection rule necessary for decoupling SR relations.  相似文献

Responses are quicker to predictable stimuli than if the time and place of appearance is uncertain. Studies that manipulate target predictability often involve overt cues to speed up response times. However, less is known about whether individuals will exhibit faster response times when target predictability is embedded within the inter-trial relationships. The current research examined the combined effects of spatial and temporal target predictability on reaction time (RT) and allocation of overt attention in a sustained attention task. Participants responded as quickly as possible to stimuli while their RT and eye movements were measured. Target temporal and spatial predictability were manipulated by altering the number of: 1) different time intervals between a response and the next target; and 2) possible spatial locations of the target. The effects of target predictability on target detection (Experiment 1) and target discrimination (Experiment 2) were tested. For both experiments, shorter RTs as target predictability increased across both space and time were found. In addition, the influences of spatial and temporal target predictability on RT and the overt allocation of attention were task dependent; suggesting that effective orienting of attention relies on both spatial and temporal predictability. These results indicate that stimulus predictability can be increased without overt cues and detected purely through inter-trial relationships over the course of repeated stimulus presentations.  相似文献

Inhibitory components in the response evoked by presentation of mobile visual stimuli in neurons belonging to the lateral suprasylvian area of the cerebral cortex were investigated in cats. It was demonstrated by comparing poststimulus histograms of neuronal response to movement in two opposite directions that the location of discharge centers within the receptive fields changed in relation to movement direction. No spatial area giving rise to the inhibitory component of response could be found in any of the neurons with monotone stationary structure of their receptive fields. Findings from experiments involving techniques of stimulating a test area of the receptive field separately indicated that inhibitory components of response in neurons of the lateral suprasylvian area with monotone organization of the receptive field could represent inhibitory after-response following the neuronal excitation produced by the visual stimulus traveling across this field.L. Increased intra-subject variability of reaction times (ISV-RT) is one of the most consistent findings in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although the nature of this phenomenon is still unclear, it has been hypothesised to reflect interference from the Default Mode Network (DMN). So far, ISV-RT has been operationally defined either as a frequency spectrum of the underlying RT time series, or as a measure of dispersion of the RT scores distribution. Here, we use a novel RT analysis framework to link these hitherto unconnected facets of ISV-RT by determining the sensitivity of different measures of RT dispersion to the frequency content of the underlying RT time series. N=27 patients with ADHD and N=26 healthy controls performed several visual N-back tasks. Different measures of RT dispersion were repeatedly modelled after individual frequency bands of the underlying RT time series had been either extracted or suppressed using frequency-domain filtering. We found that the intra-subject standard deviation of RT preserves the “1/f noise” characteristic typical of human RT data. Furthermore and most importantly, we found that the ex-Gaussian parameter τ is rather exclusively sensitive to frequencies below 0.025 Hz in the underlying RT time series and that the particularly slow RTs, which nourish τ, occur regularly as part of an quasi-periodic, ultra-slow RT fluctuation. Overall, our results are compatible with the idea that ISV-RT is modulated by an endogenous, slowly fluctuating process that may reflect DMN interference.  相似文献

Background

Reaction time (RT) is one of the most widely used measures of performance in experimental psychology, yet relatively few fMRI studies have included trial-by-trial differences in RT as a predictor variable in their analyses. Using a multi-study approach, we investigated whether there are brain regions that show a general relationship between trial-by-trial RT variability and activation across a range of cognitive tasks.

Methodology/Principal Findings

The relation between trial-by-trial differences in RT and brain activation was modeled in five different fMRI datasets spanning a range of experimental tasks and stimulus modalities. Three main findings were identified. First, in a widely distributed set of gray and white matter regions, activation was delayed on trials with long RTs relative to short RTs, suggesting delayed initiation of underlying physiological processes. Second, in lateral and medial frontal regions, activation showed a “time-on-task” effect, increasing linearly as a function of RT. Finally, RT variability reliably modulated the BOLD signal not only in gray matter but also in diffuse regions of white matter.

Conclusions/Significance

The results highlight the importance of modeling trial-by-trial RT in fMRI analyses and raise the possibility that RT variability may provide a powerful probe for investigating the previously elusive white matter BOLD signal.  相似文献

Visually evoked potentials were used to determine the spatial contrast response function of the visual system and the visual acuity of the pigeon. The spatial contrast response describes the relationship between the contrast in a pattern of vertical stripes, whose luminance is a function of position, and the amplitude of the visually evoked response at various spatial frequencies for a given temporal frequency (pattern reversal frequency); it indicates how particular spatial frequencies are attenuated in the visual system. The visually evoked responses were recorded using monopolar stainless steel electrodes inserted into the stratum griseum superficiale of the optic tectum; the depth of penetration was determined on the basis of a stereotactic atlas. The stimulus patterns were generated on a video monitor placed 75 cm in front of the animal's eye perpendicular to the optic axis. The spatial contrast response function measured at 10% contrast and 0.5 Hz reversal frequency shows a peak at a spatial frequency of 0.5 c/deg, corresponding to 1 degree of visual angle, and decreases progressively at higher spatial frequencies. The high-frequency limit (cut-off frequency) for resolution of sinusoidal gratings, estimated from the contrast response function, is 15.5 c/deg, corresponding to a visual acuity of 1.9 min of arc.  相似文献

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in a visuo-spatial attention task where the position of an imperative stimulus was indicated either validly or invalidly by a central arrow (trial-by-trial cueing). Subjects had to perform choice RT tasks with the response being dependent either on the identity of the target stimulus or on its position. When target identity was relevant for response selection, validly cued stimuli elicited amplitude enhancements of the early, sensory-evoked P1 and N1 components at lateral posterior sites. The N1 validity effect was limited to scalp sites ipsilateral to the visual field of stimulus presentation. Although these effects were found only when the sensory discrimination task was considerably difficult, they are in line with models assuming that modulations of sensory-perceptual processing (“sensory gating”) are induced by spatial cueing. However, when target location was response-relevant, N1 amplitude enhancements were consistently elicited by invalidly cued letters.CNV and LRP measures indicated that the arrow elicited response-related processing in the cue-target interval. Such processes occurred even when the cue contained no information about an upcoming response. Two consecutive lateralization phases were distinguishable in the LRP, with experimentally induced response assignments becoming effective only during the second phase.

The localization of visual areas in the human cortex is typically based on mapping the retinotopic organization with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The most common approach is to encode the response phase for a slowly moving visual stimulus and to present the result on an individual's reconstructed cortical surface. The main aims of this study were to develop complementary general linear model (GLM)-based retinotopic mapping methods and to characterize the inter-individual variability of the visual area positions on the cortical surface. We studied 15 subjects with two methods: a 24-region multifocal checkerboard stimulus and a blocked presentation of object stimuli at different visual field locations. The retinotopic maps were based on weighted averaging of the GLM parameter estimates for the stimulus regions. In addition to localizing visual areas, both methods could be used to localize multiple retinotopic regions-of-interest. The two methods yielded consistent retinotopic maps in the visual areas V1, V2, V3, hV4, and V3AB. In the higher-level areas IPS0, VO1, LO1, LO2, TO1, and TO2, retinotopy could only be mapped with the blocked stimulus presentation. The gradual widening of spatial tuning and an increase in the responses to stimuli in the ipsilateral visual field along the hierarchy of visual areas likely reflected the increase in the average receptive field size. Finally, after registration to Freesurfer's surface-based atlas of the human cerebral cortex, we calculated the mean and variability of the visual area positions in the spherical surface-based coordinate system and generated probability maps of the visual areas on the average cortical surface. The inter-individual variability in the area locations decreased when the midpoints were calculated along the spherical cortical surface compared with volumetric coordinates. These results can facilitate both analysis of individual functional anatomy and comparisons of visual cortex topology across studies.  相似文献

Recent imaging studies have reported directional motion biases in human visual cortex when perceiving moving random dot patterns. It has been hypothesized that these biases occur as a result of the integration of motion detector activation along the path of motion in visual cortex. In this study we investigate the nature of such motion integration with functional MRI (fMRI) using different motion stimuli. Three types of moving random dot stimuli were presented, showing either coherent motion, motion with spatial decorrelations or motion with temporal decorrelations. The results from the coherent motion stimulus reproduced the centripetal and centrifugal directional motion biases in V1, V2 and V3 as previously reported. The temporally decorrelated motion stimulus resulted in both centripetal and centrifugal biases similar to coherent motion. In contrast, the spatially decorrelated motion stimulus resulted in small directional motion biases that were only present in parts of visual cortex coding for higher eccentricities of the visual field. In combination with previous results, these findings indicate that biased motion responses in early visual cortical areas most likely depend on the spatial integration of a simultaneously activated motion detector chain.  相似文献

Repeated visual processing of an unfamiliar face suppresses neural activity in face-specific areas of the occipito-temporal cortex. This "repetition suppression" (RS) is a primitive mechanism involved in learning of unfamiliar faces, which can be detected through amplitude reduction of the N170 event-related potential (ERP). The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) exerts top-down influence on early visual processing. However, its contribution to N170 RS and learning of unfamiliar faces remains unclear. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) transiently increases or decreases cortical excitability, as a function of polarity. We hypothesized that DLPFC excitability modulation by tDCS would cause polarity-dependent modulations of N170 RS during encoding of unfamiliar faces. tDCS-induced N170 RS enhancement would improve long-term recognition reaction time (RT) and/or accuracy rates, whereas N170 RS impairment would compromise recognition ability. Participants underwent three tDCS conditions in random order at ∼72 hour intervals: right anodal/left cathodal, right cathodal/left anodal and sham. Immediately following tDCS conditions, an EEG was recorded during encoding of unfamiliar faces for assessment of P100 and N170 visual ERPs. The P3a component was analyzed to detect prefrontal function modulation. Recognition tasks were administered ∼72 hours following encoding. Results indicate the right anodal/left cathodal condition facilitated N170 RS and induced larger P3a amplitudes, leading to faster recognition RT. Conversely, the right cathodal/left anodal condition caused N170 amplitude and RTs to increase, and a delay in P3a latency. These data demonstrate that DLPFC excitability modulation can influence early visual encoding of unfamiliar faces, highlighting the importance of DLPFC in basic learning mechanisms.  相似文献

We examined responses of neurons of the field 21b of the cat brain cortex to presentation of moving visual stimuli of different forms. Characteristics of the responses of about 54% of the studied neurons showed that in these cases configurations of the contours of moving stimuli were to a certain extent discriminated. Most neurons selectively reacting to changes in the form of the stimulus were dark-sensitive units (they generated optimum responses to presentation of dark visual stimuli on the light background). Detailed examination of the spatial infrastructure of receptive fields (RFs) of the neurons and comparison of this structure with the selectivity of neuronal responses showed that there is no significant correlation between static organization of the RF and responses of the neuron to the movements of stimuli of different forms. We hypothesize that the dynamic infrastructure of the RF and the combined activity of functional groups of neurons, whose RFs spatially overlap the RF of the neuron under study, play a definite role in the mechanisms responsible for neuronal discrimination of the form of the visual stimulus.
