Kleptoparasitism, the stealing of food by one animal from another, is a widespread biological phenomenon. In this paper we build upon earlier models to investigate a population of conspecifics involved in foraging and, potentially, kleptoparasitism. We assume that the population is composed of four types of individuals, according to their strategic choices when faced with an opportunity to steal and to resist an attack. The fitness of each type of individual depends upon various natural parameters, for example food density, the handling time of a food item and the probability of mounting a successful attack against resistance, as well as the choices that they make. We find the evolutionarily stable strategies (ESSs) for all parameter combinations and show that there are six possible ESSs, four pure and two mixtures of two strategies, that can occur. We show that there is always at least one ESS, and sometimes two or three. We further investigate the influence of the different parameters on when each type of solution occurs.  相似文献

A long standing question in evolutionary biology concerns the maintenance of adaptive combinations of traits in the presence of recombination. This problem may be solved if positive epistasis selects for reducing the rate of recombination between such traits, but this requires sufficiently strong epistasis. Here we use a model that we developed previously to analyze a frequency-dependent strategy game in asexual populations, to study how adaptive combinations of traits may be maintained in the presence of recombination when epistasis is too weak to select for genetic linkage. Previously, in the asexual case, our model demonstrated the evolution of adaptive associations between social foraging strategies and learning rules. We verify that these adaptive associations, which are represented by different two-locus haplotypes, can easily be broken by genetic recombination. We also confirm that a modifier allele that reduces the rate of recombination fails to evolve (due to weak epistasis). However, we find that under the same conditions of weak epistasis, there is an alternative mechanism that allows an association between traits to evolve. This is based on a genetic switch that responds to the presence of one social foraging allele by activating one of the two alternative learning alleles that are carried by all individuals. We suggest that such coordinated phenotypic expression by genetic switches offers a general and robust mechanism for the evolution of adaptive combinations of traits in the presence of recombination.  相似文献

The biochemical basis of specializations for dispersal vs. reproduction is an understudied aspect of dispersal polymorphism in insects. Using a radiolabelled amino acid, we quantified differences in in vivo amino acid metabolism between morphs of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, that trade-off early age reproduction and dispersal capability. Studies were conducted in crickets fed a variety of diets expected to influence amino acid and lipid metabolism. On the day of molt to adulthood, prior to the morph-specific trade-off between ovarian growth and biochemical preparation for flight (e.g. biosynthesis of triglyceride flight fuel), morphs did not differ in any aspect of amino acid metabolism. However, on day 5 of adulthood, when the morph-specific trade-off between ovarian growth and flight fuel production was manifest, the morphs differed substantially in each of the three aspects of amino acid metabolism studied: conversion to protein, oxidation, and conversion to lipid. Morphs also differed in degree of allocation of products of amino acid metabolism to ovaries vs. the soma. Most importantly, morphs differed in the relative metabolism of radiolabelled glycine through these pathways (i.e. biochemical trade-offs), and in the relative allocation of end products of amino acid metabolism to the soma vs. ovaries (allocation trade-offs). A functionally important interaction between amino acid and lipid metabolism was noted: greater oxidation of amino acids in the flight-capable morph spared fatty acids for enhanced conversion into triglyceride flight fuel. By contrast, greater oxidation of fatty acids by the flightless morph spared amino acids for enhanced conversion into ovarian protein. Diet significantly affected amino acid metabolism. However, MORPHxDIET interactions were rare and morphs differed in amino acid metabolism to a similar degree under the range of diets tested.  相似文献

  1. Almost all the models so far presented assume that predators are omniscient in the sense that they always have complete information about the spatial distribution of prey abundance and its change over time. But this type of model cannot cover the situation where the prey abundance in each patch changes over time due to factors other than predation. The model with a data window and absolute criterion (SAC) here enables us to treat such situations.
  2. The strategy of non-omniscient predators can be generally devided into four procedures; collection of information, its memorization, decision of tactics and its execution. SAC involves only two tactics; to stay another time period in the patch the predator is staying presently or to move to another patch chosen at random. The choice of either one of the two tactics is made by comparing the profitability of the current patch estimated by the data window with a pre-determined absolute criterion.
  3. Three changing patterns of prey abundance are considered. In the most general pattern good patches have a higher mean profitability than poor patches, but the profitability changes cyclically in each of patches.
  4. There are only two possibilities for an optimal strategy; the “patch choice strategy” in which once the predator has taken a good patch, it tries to stay there even when the state becomes poor, and the ‘state choice strategy” in which the predator seeks for only good states in good patches. The condition for which either of the two foraging strategies is superior to the other is specified analytically.

  1. The model with two data windows and the relative comparison criterion (SRC) is proposed based on a Dynamic Programming problem. The model deals with predators whith remember separately the profitability of each patch and visit patches repeatedly. The model predator can remember foraging results that have occurred within the duration of memory (Dm). But when the number of foraging results in one patch exceeds the capacity of the memory chamber (Cm), older results are deleted from memory. Cm is the short data window for patches searched recently and Dm is the long one for patches searched in the past, but not recently. The model predator always searches at the patch with the highest estimation of profitability.
  2. The validity of SRC was checked by the experiment with great tits ofSmith andSweatman (1974). SRC could describe satisfactorily weil the experimental result that great tits at first searched almost uniformly and then concentrated their foraging efforts to good patches but they could not detect the new good patch after changes in food distribution. These analyses showed that great tits did not forage in an optimal manner in the experimental conditions ofSmith andSweatman (1974).
  3. Differences of SRC from the exploration and exploitation model ofKrebs et al. (1978) and from the model with one data window and the absolute criterion (SAC) of Inoue (1983) were discussed to show characteristics of the two extreme strategies for sampling the patchy environment.

Transgenic mice expressing human neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) instead of mouse FcRn are available for IgG antibody pharmacokinetic (PK) studies. Given the interest in a rodent model that offers reliable predictions of antibody PK in monkeys and humans, we set out to test whether the PK of IgG antibodies in such mice correlated with the PK of the same antibodies in primates. We began by using a single research antibody to study the influence of: (1) different transgenic mouse lines that differ in FcRn transgene expression; (2) homozygous vs. hemizygous FcRn transgenic mice; (3) the presence vs. absence of coinjected high-dose human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), and (4) the presence vs. absence of coinjected high-dose human serum albumin (HSA). Results of those studies suggested that use of hemizygous Tg32 mice (Tg32 hemi) not treated with IVIG or HSA offered potential as a predictive model for PK in humans. Mouse PK studies were then done under those conditions with a panel of test antibodies whose PK in mice and primates is not significantly affected by target binding, and for which monkey or human PK data were readily available. Results from the studies revealed significant correlations between terminal half-life or clearance values observed in the mice and the corresponding values reported in humans. A significant relationship in clearance values between mice and monkeys was also observed. These correlations suggest that the Tg32 hemi mouse model, which is both convenient and cost-effective, can offer value in predicting antibody half-life and clearance in primates.  相似文献

Within populations, the stochastic effect of genetic drift and deterministic effect of natural selection are potentially weakened or altered by gene flow among populations. The influence of gene flow on Lake Erie populations of the common garter snake has been of particular interest because of a discontinuous colour pattern polymorphism (striped vs. melanistic) that is a target of natural selection. We reassessed the relative contributions of gene flow and genetic drift using genetic data and population size estimates. We compared all combinations of two marker systems and two analytical approaches to the estimation of gene flow rates: allozymes (data previously published), microsatellite DNA (new data), the island model ( F ST-based approach), and a coalescence-based approach. For the coalescence approach, mutation rates and sampling effects were also investigated. While the two markers produced similar results, gene flow based on F ST was considerably higher (Nm > 4) than that from the coalescence-based method (Nm < 1). Estimates of gene flow are likely to be inflated by lack of migration-drift equilibrium and changing population size. Potentially low rates of gene flow (Nm < 1), small population size at some sites, and positive correlations of number of microsatellite DNA alleles and island size and between M , mean ratio of number of alleles to range in allele size, and island size suggest that in addition to selection, random genetic drift may influence colour pattern frequencies. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79, 389–399.  相似文献

A detailed sensitivity analysis of a model of a predator-prey system comprised of Tetranychus urticae and Phytoseiulus persimilis was performed. The aim was to assess the relative importance of the life history parameters of both species, the functional response, and the components of the numerical response. In addition, the impact of the initial predator-prey ratio and the timing of predator introduction were tested. Results indicated that the most important factors in the system were relative rates of predator and prey development, the time of onset of predator oviposition, and the mode of the predator's oviposition curve. The total oviposition of the predator, the effect of prey consumption on predator oviposition, and predator searching were important under some conditions. Factors of moderate importance were the adult female predator's functional response, total prey oviposition, the mode of the prey's oviposition curve, abiotic mortality of the pre-adult predator, and the effect of prey consumption on predator development and on the immature predator's mortality. Factors of least importance were the variances of the predator's and prey's oviposition curves, the abiotic mortality of the adult predator, the abiotic mortality of the pre-adult and adult prey, the functional response of the nymphal and adult male predators, and the effect of prey consumption on adult predator mortality. The sex ratios had little effect, except when the proportion of female predators was very low. The initial predator-prey ratio and time of predator introduction had significant impacts on system behavior, though the patterns of impact were different.  相似文献

An isolated light-harvesting pigment-protein complex contains polypeptides which bind chlorophyll a and b. The individual complexes can be purified from detergent-solubilized membranes. The isolated light-harvesting complex, when dialyzed to remove detergents, was examined by freeze-fracture electron microscopy. The material consisted of planar sheets of 80-Å subunits which interacted via an edge-to-edge contact. Addition of cations caused the planar light-harvesting complex sheets to become tightly appressed in multilamellar stacks, with distinct subunits still visible within each lamellar sheet. A transition of particle organization from random to crystalline occurred in parallel with the cation-induced lamellar association. Treatment of the dialyzed light-harvesting complex subunits with low levels of the proteolytic enzyme trypsin removed a 2000 molecular weight segment of the major polypeptide of the light-harvesting complex and blocked all subsequent cation-induced changes in structural organization of the isolated light-harvesting complex lamellar sheets.To gain further evidence for mechanisms of cation effects upon the organization of the light-harvesting complex in native membranes, the light-harvesting complex was incorporated into uncharged (phosphatidylcholine) lipid vesicles. The protein complexes spanned the lipid bilayer and were arranged in either a random pattern or in hexagonal crystalline lattices. Addition of either monovalent or divalent cations to ‘low-salt’ (20 mM monovalent cation) vesicles containing light-harvesting complex caused extensive regions of membrane appression to appear. It is concluded that this cation-induced membrane appression is mediated by surface-exposed segments of the light-harvesting complex since (a) phosphatidylcholine vesicles themselves did not undergo cation-induced aggregation, and (b) mild trypsin digestion of the surface-exposed regions of the light-harvesting complex blocked cation-induced lamellar appression. The particles in the appressed vesicle membranes tended to form long, linear arrays of particles, with occasional mixed quasi-crystalline arrays with an angular displacement near 72°. Surface-mediated interactions among light-harvesting complex subunits of different membranes are, therefore, related to changes in structural organization and interaction of the particles within the lipid phase of the membrane.Numerous previous studies have implicated the involvement of the light-harvesting complex in mediating grana stocking in intact chloroplast membranes. The data presented herein provide a simulation of the membrane appression phenomena using a single class of chloroplast-derived membrane subunits. The data demonstrate that specific surface-localized regions of the light-harvesting complex are involved in membrane-membrane interactions.  相似文献
