Laboratory experiments were set up in order to determine andcompare developmental rates, growth rates, generation timesand egg production rates for the two calanoid copepod speciesCentropages typicus and Centropages hamatus. The nauplii showeda higher developmental rate than the copepodites for both specieswith quite different individual stage durations, which gaveno indication of isochronal development. For C typicus equiproportionaldevelopment was found. The growth rates were exponential andhighest for the largest species C typicus, and for both speciesthe juvenile growth rates were very similar to the egg productionrates of the adults.  相似文献

Growth rates of the copepod Centropages typicus were assessedduring May 1998 in the Alboran Sea. The goal of the work wasto compare field growth rates of juvenile (artificial cohortmethod) and adult copepods (female egg production rates) underan extensive range of natural conditions. The results showedthat adult and juvenile growth rates were similar in some stations,while in others no such relationship was apparent. In contrastto the common belief that juvenile growth may be saturated undernatural conditions whereas adults may be food-limited, in mostof our study, adult growth rates were greater than juveniles.We discuss these results in the light of food availability atthe surveyed stations. In summary, the assumption that copepodgrowth rates estimated through egg production rates of adultsare equivalent to juvenile growth is not always valid.  相似文献

Adult specimens of the calanoid copepod Centropages abdominalis collected from February through April 1986 in Shinhamako, a saline lake connected to Tokyo Bay, were heavily infested with the stalked ciliate Zoothamnium. The number of copepods and those infested varied during the infestation period; in February when the copepod population was large, the incidence of infestation was low, whereas in March when the copepod population was small, copepods infested with Zoothamnium were proportionally more abundant. Numerical variations of infested copepods may correspond to changes in the Zoothamnium population. No specimens of Acartia omorii, which coexists with C. abdominalis, were infested in 1986, although a small number of A. omorii were infested with peritrich ciliates in 1985. Some shrimp larvae were also covered with the same peritrichs as copepods. Nevertheless, as a whole, the relationship between the phoront and its carrier seems to be specific. The highest incidence of infested copepods was approximately 30% similar to that in 1985. The sex ratio of C. abdominalis changed on each sampling date but in general females were more numerous than males. The percentage of infested males was higher than that of infested females, suggesting that the former can be attached to more easily than the latter.  相似文献

Diel variations in vertical distribution, gut pigment content,ammonium excretion and egg production were investigated foradult females of Acartia erythraea and A.pacifica in the verticallymixed Inland Sea of Japan and Centropages furcatus in the stratified,neritic Gulf of Mexico. Gut pigment content and egg productionrate were maximal at night and ammonium excretion was maximalduring the daytime. Neither A.erythraea nor A.pacifica adultfemales showed an apparent diel migration, but the former werehighly concentrated in the surface layer during the afternoon.In contrast, C.furcatus adult females showed a clear diel migration,residing immediately above the bottom during the daytime andbeing concentrated between 10 and 25 m depth during the nighttime.Individual-based data on gut content and excretion and egg productionrates were combined with vertical-distribution data to calculatepopulation values. In the Inland Sea of Japan, the resultantpattern for Acartia spp. reflected the diel variation in physiologicalrates and even distribution of adult females, except for theafternoon, surface aggregation of A.erythraea. In the Gulf ofMexico, the pattern for C.furcatus reflected largely the dielvariation in each rate process and the heterogeneous distributionof adult females in the water column. Elevated nocturnal feedingactivity of these copepods may be due to an endogenous rhythm.The daytime maximum in ammonium excretion and night-time maximumin egg production rate indicated approximate half-day and daytime lags, respectively, after the intake of food until itsconversion into dissolved excreta and released eggs.  相似文献

Data consisting of high resolution profiles of in situ chlorophyll,copepods and primary production have been measured with a towedBatfish and profiling pumping system at two sites named ‘BIOSTAT’(9°45'N, 93°45'W) and ‘DOME’ (7°19'N,83°25'W) sites during March 1981. Primary production profileswere generated from Batfish profiles using a chlorophyll/lightmodel and incubated pump samples, the latter with high verticalresolution of 3–5 m. The BIOSTAT site had a subsurfacechlorophyll maximum situated at {small tilde}50 m, and a productionmaximum at a depth of 40 m Copepods had a mean depth centroidcorresponding to the production maximum although their distributionwas more uniformly dispersed from 0 to 40 m. The latter observationindicated that copepods occurred at depths of high productionpotential and low biomass rather than high total productionand high biomass as found at 40 m depth. The DOME site had amixed surface layer of chlorophyll (0–20 m) while copepodswere located at the base of the chlorophyll layer and primaryproduction maximum located at the surface (0–10 m). Theareal daily production measured at the BIOSTAT and DOME siteswere 0.27 and 0.80 mg C m–2day–1 respectively.  相似文献

Laboratory studies on the seasonal cycling of egg productionrates for Centropages typicus and Acartia clausi did not reflectseasonal changes in densities for these species at sea. Maximumegg production rates occurred from autumn to spring when populationabundances at sea were low. In late spring, an increment inpopulation numbers was followed by a drastic decline in eggdeposition which continued into summer. The percentage lossdue to mortality, calculated using egg data and total numberof copepodid stages CIII and CIV recorded at sea {small tilde}2weeks later, indicated greatest mortality (80–99%) fromeggs to copepodids during periods of high breeding intensity.These results suggest that high and low density phases in populationnumbers may be the outcome of variations in reproductive potentialand survival rates of eggs and immature stages rather than reproductivepotential per se.  相似文献

A new species of diatoms, intermediate between Nitzschia cylindrus(Grun.) Hasle and Nitzschia pseudonana Hasle is described. Differencesin morphology of the three species are outlined. The rates of egg production of individually reared females ofCentropager typicus have been observed from the moulting C5-adultto death under constant conditions of food (10 000 cells ml–1of Hymenomonas elongara) and temperature (15 and 20°C).Preliminaiy experiments showed that virgin females could produceunfecunded eggs, but that the distinctive spines of the eggsof C.typicus were only obtained after fecundation occurred.High and continuous egg production needs several matings, andthe following experiments were run with a couple. In all experiments,both males and females fed and produced faecal pellets. Thefemales show a high variability in spawning life periods, inspawning rhythms, in daily rates and, consequently, in cumulatednumbers of eggs spawned during their life. The highest dailyrates of egg production were obtained in the first half of thefemale's life, and were as high at 20°C as at 15°C.Nevertheless, the females survived longer at 15°C than at20°C, and finally produced 47.6% more eggs during theirwhole life at 15°C than at 20°C, which can be partiallydue to the difference in size (almost 10% bigger at 15°Cthan at 20°C). The production of faecal pellets occurredduring the whole of life and was more regular than egg production,with a maximum daily rate in the first part of life, and showeda decrease until death. The decline in daily egg productionwith age was parallel to the decrease in daily faecal pelletproduction. The daily production of faecal pellets was higherat 15°C than at 20°C. At 20°C, a good correlationwas observed between the total egg production per female andthe total faecal pellet production per female. The individual-basedegg production rates of our experiments have been compared withrates obtained in different conditions by several authors, andwere lower than in other published studies, probably due tothe food offered. We emphasize the difficulties of comparingresults which have been obtained for the entire life of thefemales with those based on daily egg production. The totalegg production of a female is an important parameter in regardto the population d because it fixes the maximal rate of losses(mortality plus dispersion) for which a population can continueto develop.  相似文献

Egg production rates in wild populations of Acartia clausi and Centropages typicus, sampled biweekly in the Gulf of Naples from October 1985 to July 1987, showed marked seasonal fluctuations with maximum values in early spring that proceeded the annual maxima for adult female densities in summer. A positive correlation between chlorophyll a concentrations and egg production was evident only during the early spring phytoplankton bloom. A strong diminution in egg deposition occurred later in spring and continued throughout the summer notwithstanding high chlorophyll concentrations. In winter, when population abundances for adult females were lowest, egg production rates were always higher than in summer. Differences in egg production rates coincided with pronounced morphological changes between summer and winter populations of both species. The most striking of these changes consisted, in winter, in the presence of a dark brown fluid-like mass of granular material that seemed to freely bathe the gonads. The presence of this substance only during periods of elevated egg production suggests that it may enhance egg production rates when the adult population reaches minimum annual levels. Such a mechanism of self-regulation may operate to dampen the effects of environmental variability thereby contributing to maintain a conservative structure in coastal copepod communities.  相似文献

Egg-burying reptiles need relatively stable temperature and humidity in the substrate surrounding their eggs for successful development and hatchling emergence. Here we show that egg and hatchling mortality of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) in northwest Costa Rica were affected by climatic variability (precipitation and air temperature) driven by the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Drier and warmer conditions associated with El Ni?o increased egg and hatchling mortality. The fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects a warming and drying in Central America and other regions of the World, under the SRES A2 development scenario. Using projections from an ensemble of global climate models contributed to the IPCC report, we project that egg and hatchling survival will rapidly decline in the region over the next 100 years by ~50-60%, due to warming and drying in northwestern Costa Rica, threatening the survival of leatherback turtles. Warming and drying trends may also threaten the survival of sea turtles in other areas affected by similar climate changes.  相似文献

Measurements of hydrography, chlorophyll, moulting rates ofjuvenile copepods and egg production rates of adult female copepodswere made at eight stations along a transect across the Skagerrak.The goals of the study were to determine (i) if there were correlationsbetween spatial variations in hydrography, phytoplankton andcopepod production rates, (ii) if copepod egg production rateswere correlated with juvenile growth rates, and (iii) if therewas evidence of food-niche separation among co-occumng femalecopepods The 200 km wide Skagerrak had a stratified water columnin the center and a mixed water column along the margins. Suchspatial variations should lead to a dominance of small phytoplanktoncells in the center and large cells along the margins; however,during our study blooms of Gyrodinium aureolum and Ceratium(three species) masked any locally driven differences in cellsize: 50% of chla was >11 µm, 5% in the 11–50µm fraction and 45% <50 µm. averaged for allstations. Chlorophyll ranged from 0.2 to 2.5 µg l–1at most depths and stations. Specific growth rates of copepodsaveraged 0.10 day–1 for adult females and 0.27 day–1for juveniles The latter is similar to maximum rates known fromlaboratory studies, thus were probably not food-limited. Eggproduction rates were food-limited with the degree of limitationvarying among species: 75% of maximum for Centropages typicus, 50% for Calanus finmarchicus, 30% for Paracalanus parvus and 15% for Acartia longiremis and Temora longicornis. Thedegree of limitation was unrelated to female body size suggestingfood-niche separation among adults. Copepod production, summedover all species, ranged from 3 to 8 mg carbon m–3day–1and averaged 4.6 mg carbon m–1 day–1. Egg productionaccounted for 25% of the total.  相似文献

Species diversity and density of mollusks have been studied in Vashutkiny Lakes (Bol’shezemel’skaya Tundra, northeastern Europe). These lakes are comparable to northern boreal lakes in mollusk species diversity and density levels. Two hypotheses proposed by Zvereva are analyzed: on the relict origin of the ecosystem of these lakes and on the leading role of intrazonal factors in the formation of their abnormally high level of production. Both hypotheses are confirmed by recent data. The production of these lakes is mainly determined by their flowing regime, which offers intense convective heat exchange between water masses and suprapermafrost taliks under the lakes and leads to the accumulation of summer heat in friable Quaternary sediments, which are widespread in lake depressions. Intense water exchange together with strong wind-induced mixing hinders the stratification of water masses.  相似文献

The hydrography, chlorophyll (Chl) a and egg production of thecopepods Paracalanus parvus (Claus), Acartia lilljeborgii Giesbrecht,Acartia clausi Giesbrecht and Centropages furcatus were estimateddaily between 7 February and 5 March 1998 in Bahía Magdalena,Baja California Sur, México. Temperature was homogeneousthroughout the water column during the study (20°C). Positiveanomalies of the sea surface temperature were recorded 10 monthsbefore and during the sampling period compared with a temperature–timeseries, 1982–1989. Chlorophyll a concentration indicatedoligotrophic conditions with <10 Chl a mg m–2 from15 m depth to the surface during the first half of the study,with a pulse of moderate concentration in the second part. Theegg production of these copepod species was usually suboptimal,and not correlated with Chl concentration or temperature. Eachgenus responded differently to Chl a and to environmental variables.The rate of input of turbulent kinetic energy to the ocean bythe winds, indicated by the cube of the wind speed, was negativelycorrelated to copepod egg production, suggesting that turbulencecan disperse phytoplankton patches and may affect the carboninput to these copepod populations. Turbulence and a previouslong warming event observed several months before the winterseason were probably the most important factors in limitingcopepod production and growth rates.  相似文献

In order to clarify the importance of the microbial food chainin relation to the grazing food chain in the Oyashio region,western subarctic Pacific, the biomass of component organismsin the two food chains was investigated during July and Octoberin 1997, and January, March and May in 1998. Carbon flows withinthe plankton food chains, as established from biomass data combinedwith published experimental data (Shinada et al., 2000), suggestthat primary production is largely channelled through the microbialfood chain throughout the year. The age and growth parameters of Dipturus chilensis were estimated by counting growth rings from thin sections of vertebral centra from 400 fish (246 females and 154 males), ranging from 23 to 124 cm total length (LT), and backcalculating fish lengths at previous ages. Marginal increment analysis lent support to the hypothesis of annual deposition of band‐pairs, which formed during the winter months. The oldest female D. chilensis aged in this study was 21 years and 117 cm LT, whereas the oldest male was 18 years and 93 cm LT. A 4·7% index of average per cent error (IAPE) suggested that this is a precise method for calculating the age of D. chilensis. Observed LT were lower than backcalculated LT, which implies the influence of Lee's phenomenon. The von Bertalanffy growth equations, based on mean length‐at‐age data, were estimated as Lt = 128·3 (1 ? e?0·112 (t + 0·514)) for females and Lt = 107·8 (1 ? e?0·134 (t + 0·862)) for males where t is age (years). Growth was significantly different between sexes: females reached a larger adult size. Ages and lengths at 50% maturity were estimated at 14 years of age and 106 cm LT for females and 11 years of age and 86 cm LT for males. At c. 14 years, there was a decline in growth rates in females. The factor most likely responsible for this was sexual maturity, which caused a discontinuity in growth of female fish. These results show that this species is slow‐growing, long‐lived, relatively large and of delayed maturity, characteristics that make it vulnerable to exploitation.  相似文献

Rock and sediment cores reveal that a well-developed fringing reef in Golfo Dulce, Pacific Costa Rica, up to 9 m thick was established on Cretaceous basalt about 5500 y BP. It is presently being smothered with fine sediments and is almost completely dead. This reef is made up of three main facies that are represented by comparable extant reef zones: reef-flat branching coral, fore-reef slope massive coral, and fore-reef talus sediment facies. Reef growth began with the establishment of small patch reefs dominantly formed by the branching coral Pocillopora damicornis. P. damicornis spread across the basalt bench and massive colonies of Porites lobata grew on the outer slopes, eventually blocking the seaward transport of Pocillopora fragments to the fore-reef talus sediments. The reef flourished until 500 years ago. Lower accumulation rates during the past 500 years may be due to deteriorating environmental conditions rather than slower growth after the reef reached sea level. Present-day reef communities are severely degraded with less than 2% living coral cover. The increased turbidity associated with the final stage of degradation of this reef is probably related to human activity on the adjacent shores, including deforestation, mining, and road construction.  相似文献

Feeding habits of the Pacific pomfret Brama japonica , ranging from 30 to 40 cm in standard length, were quantitatively evaluated using the index of relative importance and were compared between the transitional domain and subarctic region in the central North Pacific. In the transitional domain (between the subarctic boundary and the subarctic front), this species fed mainly on subarctic and transitional‐water gonatid squids such as Berryteuthis anonychus , Gonatus middendorffi and Gonatopsis borealis , the transitional‐water squid Onychoteuthis borealijaponica , and a subtropical and transitional‐water amphipod, Phronima sedentaria . These prey items accounted for 52·8% by wet mass of total stomach contents. In the subarctic region (north of the subarctic front), Pacific pomfrets preyed primarily on subarctic and transitional‐water squids, such as B. anonychus and G. middendorffi , and secondarily on subarctic amphipods such as Hyperia medusarum and Hyperia glaba . These four prey items comprised 71·6% by mass of total stomach contents. Major transitional domain prey items, such as G. borealis, O. borealijaponica and P. sedentaria , were almost non‐existent in stomachs of fish from the subarctic region. The mean wet stomach content mass expressed as a percentage of body mass was significantly higher in the subarctic region (2·35%) than in the transitional domain (0·75%), suggesting that, for this fish, prey items are more readily available in the subarctic region during summer and their northward migration is a feeding migration. Feeding strategy of the Pacific pomfret was discussed in relation to their seasonal south‐north migration.  相似文献
