Wellington Harbour supports large populations of the mussels Aulacomya maoriana, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Perna canaliculus that are almost entirely absent from nearby coastal locations in Cook Strait. We calculated scope for growth (SFG) using ambient Cook Strait water over a broad temporal scale and a broad range of seston conditions to determine if negative SFG explains this phenomenon. Although all three mussel species had positive mean SFG values, variation in SFG was high and negative values often occurred: A. maoriana 19.1 J g−1 h−1, 43% of mussels showed negative SFG; M. galloprovincialis 1.26, 52% negative SFG; P. canaliculus 45.6, 27% negative SFG. Negative SFG was most often due to negative absorption efficiency caused by metabolic faecal loss that is characteristic of mussels feeding in environments with low seston quality. From our ecophysiology data we constructed a model to estimate SFG based on physiological responses to the narrow range of seston conditions typical of Cook Strait (Model One), and a model to estimate SFG based on physiological responses of mussels to the broad range of seston conditions typical of Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait (Model Two). We used seston data collected over an 18-month period from sites in Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait to derive 159 estimates of species-specific mussel SFG from both models. Both models produced higher estimates of SFG for mussels in the Harbour compared with those at Cook Strait sites. This was consistent with elevated particulate concentrations in the Harbour than at Cook Strait sites, and in agreement with previous studies. For Cook Strait mussels, both models produced negative estimates of net energy balance for long periods of time (several months), whereas for Harbour mussels negative SFG estimates were generally short in duration. We conclude that our short-term laboratory-based determinations of SFG and our long-term bioenergetics modelling estimates do not conclusively support the hypothesis of food limitation for three coexisting taxa of mussels in the intertidal region of Cook Strait, New Zealand. From the 1990s, neoliberalism has been vigorously promoted by aid agencies operating in the Cook Islands. The solution to the country's economic problems has been sought in the privatisation of government assets and services and the development of free‐market principles. Social Impact Assessment reports of these reforms have included information on their effect on women and children under the heading of ‘gender’; men, however, are notably absent as a category of analysis. Building on recent work about men, masculinities and development, this paper begins to address this imbalance by examining how Cook Islands men have been effected by, and how they react to, neoliberalism in a series of gender specific ways. This paper analyses the dynamics of food exchange among Cook Islanders. The majority of Cook Islanders live abroad (primarily in New Zealand and Australia), familial and community relationships are maintained by frequent visits to and from the Cook Islands. For many Cook Islanders, the difference between home and abroad is signified through food. Its lack in New Zealand is contrasted with the bounty of home, bounty of food, and the bounty of sustaining caring relationships. As a result, when Cook Islanders from home visit family abroad, they take large quantities of local food with them. Abstract

Stem rust resistance genes Sr39 and Sr36 were transferred from Aegilops speltoides and Triticum timopheevii, respectively, to chromosome 2B of wheat. Genetic stocks RL6082 and RWG1 carrying Sr39 on a large and a shortened Ae. speltoides segments, respectively, and the Sr36-carrying Australian wheat cultivar Cook were used in this study. This investigation was planned to determine the genetic relationship between these genes. Stem rust tests on F3 populations derived from RL6082/Cook and RWG1/Cook crosses showed tight repulsion linkage between Sr39 and Sr36. The genomic in situ hybridization analysis of heterozygous F3 family from the RWG1/Cook population showed that the translocated segments do not overlap. Meiotic analysis on the F1 plant from RWG1/Cook showed two univalents at the metaphase and anaphase stages in a majority of the cells indicating absence of pairing. Since meiotic pairing has been reported to initiate at the telomere, pairing and recombination may be inhibited due to very little wheat chromatin in the distal end of the chromosome arm 2BS in RWG1. The Sr39-carrying large Ae. speltoides segment transmitted preferentially in the RL6082/Cook F3 population, whereas the Sr36-carrying T. timopheevii segment over-transmitted in the RWG1/Cook cross. Genotyping with the co-dominant Sr39- and Sr36-linked markers rwgs28 and stm773-2, respectively, matched the phenotypic classification of F3 families. The RWG1 allele amplified by rwgs28 was diagnostic for the shortened Ae. speltoides segment and alternate alleles were amplified in 29 Australian cultivars. Marker rwgs28 will be useful in marker-assisted pyramiding of Sr39 with other genes.

Rock Sandpipers Calidris ptilocnemis have the most northerly non‐breeding distribution of any shorebird in the Pacific Basin (upper Cook Inlet, Alaska; 61°N, 151°W). In terms of freezing temperatures, persistent winds and pervasive ice, this site is the harshest used by shorebirds during winter. We integrated physiological, metabolic, behavioural and environmental aspects of the non‐breeding ecology of Rock Sandpipers at the northern extent of their range to determine the relative importance of these factors in facilitating their unique non‐breeding ecology. Not surprisingly, estimated daily energetic demands were greatest during January, the coldest period of winter. These estimates were greatest for foraging birds, and exceeded basal metabolic rates by a factor of 6.5, a scope of increase that approaches the maximum sustained rate of energetic output by shorebirds during periods of migration, but far exceeds these periods in duration. We assessed the quality of their primary prey, the bivalve Macoma balthica, to determine the daily foraging duration required by Rock Sandpipers to satisfy such energetic demands. Based on size‐specific estimates of M. balthica quality, Rock Sandpipers require over 13 h/day of foraging time in upper Cook Inlet in January, even when feeding on the highest quality prey. This range approaches the average daily duration of mudflat availability in this region (c. 18 h), a maximum value that annually decreases due to the accumulation of shore‐fast ice. Rock Sandpipers are likely to maximize access to foraging sites by following the exposure of ice‐free mudflats across the upper Cook Inlet region and by selecting smaller, higher quality M. balthica to minimize foraging times. Ultimately, this unusual non‐breeding ecology relies on the high quality of their prey resources. Compared with other sites across their range, M. balthica from upper Cook Inlet have relatively light shells, potentially the result of the region's depauperate invertebrate predator community. Given the delicate balance between environmental and prey conditions that currently make Cook Inlet a viable wintering area for Rock Sandpipers, small variations in these variables may affect the suitability of the site in the future.  相似文献

Ammodesmidae are represented in western Africa by two species of a single genus, Ammodesmus Cook, 1896 (= Cenchrodesmus Cook, 1896, syn. n.). The type-species Ammodesmus granum Cook, 1896 (= Cenchrodesmus volutus Cook, 1896, syn. n.) is redescribed, based on neotype selection, as well as on additional samples, often containing numerous specimens, from Liberia, Guinea and the Ivory Coast. Seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis cv. Cook and of two selections of S. guianensis var. pauciflora (CIAT 1280 and CIAT 1062) were grown at day/night temperatures of 20°/25°, 30°/25°, and 35°/30°C in a naturally-lit glasshouse at latitude 27°30'S. Sowings were made in decreasing daylength at 30-day intervals from 22 January to 21 May. Cv. Cook and the CIAT 1280 selection did not flower fully if sown after 22 January and the CIAT 1062 selection did not flower if sown after 22 March. This is interpreted as a long-short day flowering response. Usually, flowers were initiated earlier and at a lower node at 25?/20°C than at the warmer temperatures. At 25?/20°C the first flowers to appear were produced predominantly at the terminal apex of the main stem in cv. Cook and the CIAT 1062 selection, but not in the CIAT 1280 selection. At the two warmer temperatures first flowers were more commonly produced at the terminal apex of primary, secondary and tertiary branches. There were more inflorescences per plant on earlier than later sown plants when measured 21 days from appearance of the first flower and the most inflorescences were produced by cv. Cook at 25?/20°C, by selection CIAT 1062 at 30°/25°C, and by CIAT 1280 at 35°/30°C.  相似文献

Kia Orana day is an annual event on the island of Aitutaki. It consists of performances from a number of government departments to an audience of locals and the occasional tourist. The Kia Orana day described here featured a drag show by the Ministry of Outer Islands Development. Drag shows are prevalent in the Cook Islands and they are performed by both ‘heterosexual’ and ‘homosexual’ men. This paper explores some of the reasons for their popularity through an examination of gendered ideologies that structure Cook Islands social life—in particular the ways in which gender is embodied in everyday movement and dance. The examination of forms of sexuality and gender presented in public life are used to explain the comic currency of drag. I present a number of different interpretations of the Kia Orana performance and suggest that although it may have a similar appearance to Western drag, it has different meanings in the Cook Islands. These meanings suggest drag revolves around notions of gender which are not necessarily defined by sexuality. Cook Islands drag, I propose, must be contextualised in terms of Cook Islands notions of personhood.  相似文献

Twenty enzyme loci were studied in 44 Illinois populations of Oenothera biennis; four were polymorphic. Most of the variation was distributed between populations. Fifty-nine percent of the populations had one genotype, 27% two genotypes and the remaining 16% from three to five genotypes; the average was 1.50. The proportion of genetic diversity present in single populations is.38 of that present in the state. Members of single populations were uniformly heterozygous for 1 to 4 loci. The mean heterozygosity per population ranged from 0 to 20%. For Illinois populations collectively, heterozygosity averaged 4.5%. There was much gene frequency heterogeneity between populations. The true standardized genetic variance among populations for alleles at polymorphic loci varied from.40 to.78. Populations from Cook County were much more similar inter se than those downstate, had fewer genotypes and polymorphic loci, and had less heterozygosity than downstate populations. The mean normalized genetic identity among Cook County populations was.987 versus.947 for downstate populations. The mean number of genotypes per population in Cook County was 1.06 versus 2.40 in downstate populations. There was only one polymorphic locus in Cook County, VLP. The genetic structure of Oe. biennis suggests that single populations are colonized by one, or at best a few individuals. Cook County populations are judged to be less variable than downstate populations because the mean age of the populations probably is less than that of those downstate.  相似文献

Seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis were grownin long (14 h) days in five temperature regimes for varyingperiods before transfer to short (11 h) days at 30 ?C/21 ?C.The juvenile phase before seedlings responded to inductive conditionswas c. 45–50 d, 50–60 d and 60–70 d for cv.Schofield, cv. Cook and C.P.I. 34906 respectively, which ispositively related to their critical photoperiod for flowering.Temperatures favourable for growth (e.g. 30 ?C/26 ?C) reducedthe juvenile phase in C.P.I. 34906 and in Cook, which did notflower in 11 h days unless previously exposed to more than 18long days. In a second experiment cv. Cook was confirmed as a long-shortday plant. Seedlings were grown for 50 d in a glasshouse withnatural daylength extended to 13, 14, 16 or 24 h before transferto 12 h photoperiods. Cook floral development was positivelyrelated to daylength provenance before transfer and plants incontinuous 12 h did not flower. Shortening daylength after 48 cycles of 12 h to 11.75 h didnot result in continued floral development in Cook plants butcv. Graham plants were initiated or transitional by 75 d. 目的:探讨Cook双球囊联合改良B-Lynch缝合术对产后出血的治疗效果。方法:选取2015年6月~2018年6月在我院经剖宫产术分娩并发生产后出血的产妇81例进行回顾性分析。根据术中止血方法的不同分为两组,对照组40例采用Cook双球囊进行止血,观察组41例在对照组的基础上应用改良B-Lynch缝合术进行止血。对两组患者的手术相关指标、止血成功率、子宫切除率、术后恢复情况和并发症发生情况进行比较。结果:观察组的术中出血量、术后24 h出血量和输血量显著低于对照组(P0.05),止血时间显著短于对照组(P0.05);观察组患者的止血成功率显著高于对照组(P0.05),子宫切除率和切口恢复时间显著低于对照组(P0.05),两组患者的住院时间和并发症发生率比较无统计学差异(P0.05)。结论:Cook双球囊联合改良B-Lynch缝合术对剖宫产产后出血患者的临床效果显著优于单用Cook双球囊,且安全性较高。  相似文献

Population declines and demographic changes of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), have been documented throughout this species’ range, though information on natural and anthropogenic mechanisms related to these changes are not fully understood. To provide insights into marine behaviors and survival of Chinook salmon, 40 pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs), that collected environmental data, were attached to large (69–100 cm FL) Chinook salmon caught in the marine waters of Cook Inlet, Alaska. PSATs provided evidence of predation on tagged Chinook salmon by ectothermic and unconfirmed predators, and provided valuable information about the migratory characteristics and occupied depths and temperatures of this species while occupying Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska. The results from this study suggest that late-marine mortality of Chinook salmon of a variety of stock-origins by apex predators is more common in Cook Inlet than previously thought, and may be used to improve our understanding this species’ population dynamics. Furthermore, results from this study adds to the existing knowledge of marine habitat use by Chinook Salmon and may be useful in assessing the vulnerability and interactions between this species and anthropogenic activities.

'Living fossil' taxa, by definition, have no close relatives, and therefore no outgroup to provide a root to phylogenetic trees. We identify and use a molecular outgroup in the sole extant lineage of sphenodontid reptiles, which separated from other reptiles 230 million years ago. We isolated and sequenced a partial nuclear copy of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. We confirm the copy is indeed not mitochondrial, is older than all extant mitochondrial copies in Sphenodon (tuatara), and is therefore useful as a molecular outgroup. Under phylogenetic analysis, the nuclear copy places the root of the tuatara mitochondrial gene tree between the northern and the southern (Cook Strait) groups of islands of New Zealand that are the last refugia for Sphenodon. This analysis supports a previous mid-point rooted mitochondrial gene tree. The mitochondrial DNA tree conflicts with allozyme analyses which place a Cook Strait population equidistant to all northern and other Cook Strait populations. This population on North Brother Island is the only natural population of extant S. guntheri; thus, we suggest that the current species designations of tuatara require further investigation.  相似文献

Cook Inlet beluga whales (CIBs) are an endangered population residing in Cook Inlet, Alaska. We characterized the calling behavior of CIBs to improve our understanding of sounds produced by this population. Bottom‐moored hydrophones were deployed at Eagle Bay in summer 2009 and at Trading Bay in summer and winter 2009. CIB sounds were qualitatively analyzed and categorized as a whistle, pulsed call, or click train. A total of 4,097 calls were analyzed, and 66 unique whistle contours were identified. Whistles were quantitatively analyzed using a custom Matlab program. A chi‐square test showed the call category usage at Eagle Bay during summer 2009 and those at Trading Bay during summer 2009 and winter 2009–2010 differed significantly (P < 0.001). Pulsed calls were more common during summer months, and click trains within the frequency band (12.5 kHz) were more common in Eagle Bay. The variation in calling behavior suggests differences in habitat usage or in the surrounding environment, including background noise. With the proposed development projects in Cook Inlet and the potential increase in ambient noise level due to ocean acidification, it is important to understand how this endangered population uses sound, and what anthropogenic factors may influence that use.  相似文献

Seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis were grown for 75 days in 16 h photoperiods and transferred to controlled environment cabinets for a further 112 cycles set at 12 h days and 18, 21, 24 or 27 OC constant temperatures. Floral initiation (FI) occurred in cv. Cook after 21 short-day cycles of 12 h and was independent of temperature. Warm temperatures delayed FI in cv. Schofield and hastened it in cv. Endeavour. Rate of node appearance was positively and the duration of the phase FI to flower appearance negatively related to temperature. Spike production and floret number per spike were maximal for Cook and Endeavour at 24°C; seed setting was independent of temperature above 18°C in Cook. Growth, flowering, and seed production of Endeavour required warm temperatures, but Cook was more versatile in its adaptation to varying temperature regimens.  相似文献

Multivariate analyses of quantitative characters were undertaken to examine the pattern of variation resulting from adaptive radiation ofTetramolopium in Hawaii and to investigate the systematics of an undescribed species in the Cook Islands and a group of populations of uncertain affinity on Kalaupapa Peninsula in Hawaii. Taxa differentiated on quantitative characters in the absence of qualitative characters. Differentiation was observed in multiple characters which could be organized into a few principal components. The analyses supported the species rank of the Cook Islands plants. The relationship of the Kalaupapa Peninsula populations to the rest of the taxa needs further study.  相似文献

Niue I. has two species, Chelisoches morio and Euborellia annulipes (the latter is a new record). Bacteriophage T4 infection is known to induce the formation of a complex of enzymes effecting the de novo synthesis of deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates, which in turn are channeled into T4 DNA replication. The first step in this pathway is catalyzed by a ribonucleoside diphosphate reductase, comprised of subunits coded by T4 genes nrdA and nrdB. Maximum rates of synthesis of the pyrimidine deoxyribonucleotides and of DNA replication in vivo also require a type II DNA topoisomerase encoded by T4 genes 39, 52, and 60. We report the identification of a unique mutant, nrdB93, and the suppression of its defective deoxyribonucleotide synthesis by a gene 39 mutation, 39-01. After infection by 39-01, DNA synthesis and plaque formation were temperature-sensitive, but nearly wild type rates of deoxyribonucleotide synthesis were retained at all temperatures. The nrdB93 mutation had a profound effect on deoxyribonucleotide synthesis at 41 degrees C; even at the permissive temperature of 30 degrees C, synthesis was reduced to 30% of that of wild type or 39-01. However, on infection at 30 degrees C by the double mutant, 39-01 nrdB93, the level of deoxyribonucleotide synthesis again reached that of wild type phage infections; involvement of the comparable host enzyme in the suppression process has been excluded. Suppression of the effect of nrdB93 by 39-01 implicates the gene 39 product in the regulation of nrdB expression. The accompanying paper (Cook, K. S., Wirak, D. O., Seasholtz, A. Once widespread, Cook?s scurvy grass (or nau, Lepidium oleraceum) is now confined to a few offshore populations. Classed as nationally endangered by the New?Zealand Department of Conservation, populations of Cook?s scurvy grass are threatened by a number of factors, including introduced herbivorous insect species such as the white butterfly (Pieris rapae) and white rust infection caused by the oomycete Albugo candida. In this paper, we investigate the occurrence of white butterfly on Cook?s scurvy grass and possible interactions with the white rust infection on the northernmost of the Matariki Islands in the Firth of Thames, New?Zealand. We found that larger host plants were more likely to be infested with white butterfly. The occurrence of white butterfly eggs and larvae also decreased as levels of white rust increased. Twenty-eight percent of the white butterfly larvae collected and reared in the laboratory were parasitised by the braconid wasp species Cotesia rubecula. We also reared a hyperparasitoid belonging to the super-family Chalcidoidea from one of the parasitoid cocoons. Further studies on the trophic interactions between Cook?s scurvy grass, Albugo?candida and white butterfly and its parasitoids could improve the understanding of the threats posed by plant pathogens and insect herbivores to populations of Cook?s scurvy grass, which in turn may lead to new management strategies for conservation.  相似文献
