1. 1. This study examined the effect of inhaling air supersaturated with water on changes of core temperatures in submaximally exercising males.
2. 2. During exercise with inhalation of supersaturated relative to low-air-humidity air, a significant elevation in tympanic temperature (P = 0.009) and a significant decrease in esophageal temperature (P = 0.004) were observed.
3. 3. Forehead skin temperatures significantly decreased during humidified air inhalation (P = 0.02) supporting that this treatment induced greater thermolytic responses that cooled the skin.
4. 4. The results are consistent with the conclusion that heat loss from the upper airways directly influenced human cerebral temperatures as indexed by tympanic temperatures.

The aim of the present study was to describe postnatal organ and body weight growth in male Dunkin–Hartley guinea pigs from birth to 250 days of age. The modified JANOSCHEK growth curve was fitted to the age group means for each measurement by nonlinear regression and characteristics of the resulting growth curves were calculated. At birth, brain weight showed the highest percentage of its adult value (59%), followed by eye weight (37%). Lowest percentage birth weights were found for genital organs, adrenals and pancreas, the majority of organs showed values between 4% and 15%. Weights of body, heart, spleen, liver, genital organs, thyroids and adrenals followed a sigmoidal growth course. The remaining, as examined in this study, organs exhibited simple exponential growth without a postnatal point of inflection. Among internal organs, brain weight reaches adult size first (74 days of age). Genital organs with exception of prostate, duodenum, heart and spleen are fast-growing organs, too.  相似文献

1. 1.|Hypothalamic and rectal temperatures were recorded in 8 warm-reared (wr) and 12 control rats. Rats ran to exhaustion at a constant speed of 1.5 km h−1 but at a variable ambient temperature adjusted to stabilize their hypothalamic temperature at 38.0°C (normothermia) or 41.0°C (hyperthermia). Blood lactate concentrations were determined before and after exercise.

2. 2.|Exercise caused exhaustion in normothermic control rats after 62.08 ± 5.43 min and in wr rats after 29.64 ± 2.09 min.

3. 3.|Hyperthermia shortened to one half (to 12.24 ± 1.36 min) and to one fourth (to 16.15 ± 1.20 min) the endurance time in wr and control rats, respectively.

4. 4.|There were no correlations between lactate concentraion and hyperthermia or endurance time.

5. 5.|In conclusion, in rats and other animals which have safe refuges, hyperthermia interferes with the ability to continue exercising.

Cytological preparations were incubated in 0.07 N NaOH at room temperature or 90% formamide (final salt concentration 2 × SSC) at either 65 °C or 37 °C for 2.5 h to denature guinea pig chromosomes. Chromosomes treated with NaOH or formamide at 65 °C showed a large amount of DNA loss, while chromosomes treated with formamide at 37 °C showed little or no DNA loss. Repeated sequences were isolated from guinea pig DNA and [3H]cRNA was transcribed with Escherichia coli RNA polymerase for in situ hybridization. Localization of the [3H]cRNA occurred in the centromeric regions and C-band positive short arms of almost all of the chromosomes in the NaOH preparations. Chromosomes treated with formamide at 65 °C showed the same grain distribution with a decrease in the number of grains/cluster. Slides incubated in formamide at 37 °C showed localization in only a few chromosomes and the number of grains/cluster was greatly diminished. Thermal denaturation of isolated chromatin indicated that incubation of chromosomes in formamide at 37 °C did not fully denature the DNA. C-bands could be induced by treating slides in formamide at either 65 °C or 37 °C when followed by a “reassociation” in 2 × SSC at 65 °C for 16 h. If the “reassociation” step was omitted, C-bands were found in the 65 °C formamide slides but not the 37 °C formamide slides.  相似文献

In the denervated mammalian heart a change in right atrial pressure will still alter heart rate (intrinsic rate response, IRR). We have examined the IRR in isolated right atria of the guinea-pig maintained in oxygenated Krebs–Henseleit solution at 37°C, to compare with and extend studies in other species, and to determine whether the guinea-pig is a suitable model for electrophysiological studies of the IRR. Baseline diastolic transmural pressure was set at 2 mmHg. A 6-mmHg increase in right atrial pressure (RAP) caused an increase in atrial rate that reached a steady value of 15 min−1 after 1–2 min. This response was enhanced by carbamylcholine and attenuated by isoprenaline. The influence of RAP on the rate response to vagal stimulation was examined. With RAP set at 8 mmHg, the reduction in atrial rate following vagal stimulation was 72±5% of that at 2 mmHg (n=6, mean±S.E., P<0.005). Continuous vagal stimulation produced a sustained bradycardia, and the effect of this bradycardia on the IRR was examined. When atrial rate was reduced 6% by vagal stimulation, the IRR was augmented to 202±21% of the control (n=6, P<0.005). This augmentation was larger (P<0.05) than that seen when atrial rate was reduced 8% by carbamylcholine (130±8% of control; n=7, P<0.05). Overall, the IRR in the guinea-pig is similar to that in the rabbit, and shows similar interactions with the autonomic nervous system.  相似文献

[Purpose]We determined the effect of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) after an exercise session on exercise performance on the following morning.[Methods]Eleven male athletes performed either a normal sleep trial (CON) or a PSD trial. On the first day (day 1), all subjects performed an exercise session consisting of 90 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max) followed by 100 drop jumps. Maximal strength (MVC) was evaluated before and after exercise. In the CON trial, the sleep duration was 23:00–7:00, while in the PSD trial, the sleep duration was shortened to 40% of the regular sleep duration. On the following morning (day 2), MVC, the metabolic responses during 20 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max), and time to exhaustion (TTE) at 85% V˙O2max were evaluated.[Results]On day 2, neither the MVC nor  V˙O2 during 20 min of running differed significantly between the two trials. However, the respiratory exchange ratio was significantly lower in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01). Moreover, the TTE was significantly shorter in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01).[Conclusion]A single night of PSD after an exercise session significantly decreased endurance performance without significantly changing muscle strength or cardiopulmonary response.  相似文献

2. 2.|Brain and body temperatures of wr rats were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than control rats, both in normothermia as well as in hyperthermia; at rest, and also during exercise.

3. 3.|Warm-reared rats were more tolerant to heat.

4. 4.|During normothermia a weak selective brain cooling was present in control but absent in wr rats. During hyperthermia, however, the cooling intensified in control and occurred in wr rats.

5. 5.|The main strategy of adaptation to heat in wr rats is an upward resetting of the temperature set-point and increased passivity.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones which may act protective in cerebrovascular insults and peripheral diabetic neuropathy. We hypothesized that alpha-lipoic acid (LA), a natural thiol antioxidant, may enhance brain HSP response in diabetes. Rats with or without streptozotocin-induced diabetes were treated with LA or saline for 8 weeks. Half of the rats were subjected to exhaustive exercise to investigate HSP induction, and the brain tissue was analyzed. Diabetes increased constitutive HSC70 mRNA, and decreased HSP90 and glucose-regulated protein 75 (GRP75) mRNA without affecting protein levels. Exercise increased HSP90 protein and mRNA, and also GRP75 and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) mRNA only in non-diabetic animals. LA had no significant effect on brain HSPs, although LA increased HSC70 and HO-1 mRNA in diabetic animals and decreased HSC70 mRNA in non-diabetic animals. Eukaryotic translation elongation factor-2, essential for protein synthesis, was decreased by diabetes and suggesting a mechanism for the impaired HSP response related to translocation of the nascent chain during protein synthesis. LA supplementation does not offset the adverse effects of diabetes on brain HSP mRNA expression. Diabetes may impair HSP translation through elongation factors related to nascent chain translocation and subsequent responses to acute stress.  相似文献

The syntheses and reactions of two epoxyketoacids (methyl (Z)-9,10-epoxy-13-oxo-(E)-11-octadecenoate (IV) and methyl (E)-9,10-epoxy-13-oxo-(E)-11-octadecenoate (V)) are described. The synthetic method is based on the stereoselective oxidation of linoleic acid by soybean lipoxygenase to produce the corresponding 13-hydroperoxide. Reduction of the hydroperoxide with sodium borohydride followed by oxidation, esterification and epoxidation yielded the compounds IV and V with a global yield of 14% and 3%, respectively, referred to the diasteromerically pure isolated compounds. Confirmation of the structures was carried out by reduction of the ketone group with sodium borohydride and by the opening of the oxirane ring with methanolic boron trifluoride. The reduction of compounds IV and V with hydrogen mainly yielded the tetrahydrofuranoid fatty acid, methyl 10,13-epoxyoctadecanoate. This reaction may be considered a new procedure to obtain tetrahydrofuranoid fatty acids.  相似文献

Hypoxia induces a regulated decrease in body temperature (Tb; anapyrexia) in organisms ranging from protozoans to mammals, but very little is known about the mechanisms involved. Several candidates have been suggested to mediate hypoxia-induced anapyrexia, among them lactate, which is a classical companion of hypoxic stress in vertebrates. The present study was designed to assess the central thermoregulatory effects of lactate in Bujo paracnemis. Toads equipped with a temperature probe were tested over a thermal gradient (10–40°C). Lactate injected systemically (4.0 mmol kg−1) caused a significant reduction of Tb from 24.6±2.1 to 17.4±3.9°C. To assess the role of central thermoregulatory mechanisms, a lower dose (0.4 mmol kg−1) of lactate was injected into the fourth cerebral ventricle or systemically. Intracerebroventricular injection of lactate caused a similar decrease in Tb, whereas systemic injection caused no change. The data indicate that lactate may play a role in hypoxia-induced anapyrexia in central rather than peripheral sites.  相似文献

3. 3. Plasma osmolality and levels of glucose, urea and lactate were significantly elevated in hyperthermia.

4. 4. Widespread tissue damage was indicated by increases in plasma activities of glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and creatinine phosphokinase (CPK).

5. 5. The most sensitive indicators of impending heat stroke in heat stressed rabbits were plasma levels or urea, lactate and CPK.

Selective brain cooling (SBC) requires vasoactivity in the superficial veins of the face of the animal. This vasoactivity is possible because of an adequate amount of smooth muscle in the tunica media of each of these superficial vessels, enabling it to act as a “muscle sphincter.” In this study, the angularis oculi, dorsal nasal, distal, and proximal parts of the facial veins in sheep were examined histologically to describe an anatomical basis for SBC. Measurements of the tunica media thickness, the lumen diameter, and the ratio of these measurements showed that the relative tunica media thicknesses in the angularis oculi vein and the dorsal nasal vein are statistically smaller (P < 0.001) than in the distal or the proximal parts of the facial vein. In the angularis oculi, dorsal nasal, and distal part of the facial vein, the tunicae mediae were composed of five to seven circularly arranged smooth muscle layers, suggesting their ability to vasoconstrict. The proximal part of the facial vein possesses both circularly and longitudinally arranged smooth muscle layers. The circular smooth muscle layers suggest a vasoconstrictory function, whereas the longitudinal smooth muscle layers imply a vasodilatory function in this part of the facial vein. Both the dorsal nasal and the proximal part of the facial vein, but not the angularis oculi or the distal part of the facial vein, possess endothelial valves near their confluences with other veins. It was concluded from this study that the angularis oculi and the distal part of the facial vein vasoconstrict, whereas the proximal part of the facial vein vasodilates, enabling the necessary changes in blood flow in SBC. 为探讨青花菜在模拟酸雨胁迫下谷胱甘肽-S-转移酶的表达变化,克隆了青花菜谷胱甘肽-S-转移酶基因(glutathione-S-transferase,GST)的cDNA序列全长,并进行了生物信息学和表达分析。结果表明:青花菜GST基因cDNA全长为915bp,开放阅读框为642bp,编码213个氨基酸,推测分子式为C1091H1719N289O306S5,分子量为23 940.7,没有跨膜螺旋区域和信号肽。系统进化树分析表明,该青花菜基因GST与芥菜的GST聚类关系最近。实时荧光定量PCR结果显示,在模拟酸雨胁迫下,GST基因的表达量在胁迫初期显著增大,随时间延长开始下降,表明其参与了青花菜抗酸雨的应答反应。  相似文献

Although substantial information is available regarding the fatty acid composition of lipids of the yolk and of the developing tissues of the chicken embryo, there is little knowledge on this topic for other avian species. The aim of the present study was to compare the yolk and embryonic tissue fatty acid profiles for a species selecting its food in the wild (the lesser black backed gull) with one fed on a standard commercial diet (the commercially reared pheasant). The fatty acid compositions of the yolk lipids were determined, and major differences were observed between the two species. In particular, the phospholipid of the gull yolk was enriched in 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 (18.8 and 7.1%, respectively, by weight of total fatty acids) in comparison with the pheasant (4.0 and 4.1%, respectively). The fatty acid compositions of the embryonic tissues were determined using eggs incubated in the laboratory. For the liver and heart, the fatty acid composition of the lipids in the two species reflected the initial yolk composition, with the gull tissue lipids generally containing higher proportions of 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 than those of the pheasant. In contrast, the fatty acid profiles of the brain phospholipid were essentially identical in the two species, with 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 comprising approximately 9 and 17%, respectively, of total fatty acids in both cases.  相似文献

The primary sequences of the myoglobins of two rodents (the South American viscacha and the Mediterranean mole rat) have been determined. Both myoglobins exhibit one polymorphism. The two rodent sequences have been compared with each other and with other known myoglobins. The myoglobin of the viscacha is similar to those of the diving mammals and penguin in having a high arginine content. Among mammalian sequences, the arginines at positions 77 (in one of the viscacha myoglobins) and 79 have been found only in the myoglobin from viscacha. Mole rat myoglobin has a lysine at position 31, where arginine or serine is found in all other known vertebrate myoglobins.  相似文献

Acute exercise has been shown to improve memory in humans. Potential mechanisms include increased Bdnf expression, noradrenergic activity and modification of glutamate receptors. Because mice are commonly used to study exercise and brain plasticity, it is important to explore how acute exercise impacts behavior in this model. C57BL/6J mice were assigned to three groups: control, moderate‐intensity running, and high‐intensity running. Control mice were placed on a stationary treadmill for 30 minutes and moderate‐ and high‐intensity mice ran for 30 minutes at 12 and 15‐17 m/min, respectively. Mice were sacrificed immediately after running and the hippocampus removed. Total Bdnf, Bdnf exon IV, and glutamate receptor subunits were quantified with quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Total and phosphorylated GluR1 (Ser845 and Ser831) protein was quantified following immunoblotting. Utilizing the same protocol for control and high‐intensity running, object location memory was examined in a separate cohort of mice. Anxiety‐like behavior was assessed in the open field task (OFT) in a third cohort of mice that were separated into four groups: control‐saline, control‐DSP‐4, acute exercise‐saline, and acute exercise‐DSP‐4. DSP‐4 was used to lesion the central noradrenergic system. We observed higher Bdnf IV mRNA in high‐intensity runners compared to controls, but no effects of acute exercise on memory. In the OFT, runners traveled less distance and spent more time grooming than controls. DSP‐4 did not attenuate the effects of exercise. A single bout of exercise increases Bdnf IV mRNA in an intensity‐dependent manner; however, high‐intensity running reduces exploratory behavior in C57BL/6J mice.  相似文献
