Is multiculturalism dead? Groups,governments and the ‘real work of integration’

Understood as a philosophy counselling group rights and concomitant public policies undertaken by governments to preserve and enhance group identities, multiculturalism has little purchase in European immigrant integration debates. However, based on interviews with various actors engaged in policies that affect immigrants in the Netherlands and Germany, we argue that multiculturalism remains a going concern if it is understood as a problem-solving practice through which governments acknowledge and work with ethnic and religious groups to address issues of mutual concern, particularly on issues related to gender. We label this ‘multicultural governance’ and argue that it supports the principal ends of integration policy: the socialization of immigrants into prevailing national languages, norms and institutions.     

A structural comparison of ‘real’ and ‘model’ calmodulin clarified allosteric interactions regulating domain motion

Calmodulin (CaM) is a multifunctional calcium-binding protein, which regulates various biochemical processes. CaM acts via structural changes and complex forming with its target enzymes. CaM has two globular domains (N-lobe and C-lobe) connected by a long linker region. Upon calcium binding, the N-lobe and C-lobe undergo local conformational changes, after that, entire CaM wraps the target enzyme through a large conformational change. However, the regulation mechanism, such as allosteric interactions regulating the conformational changes, is still unclear. In order to clarify the allosteric interactions, in this study, experimentally obtained ‘real’ structures are compared to ‘model’ structures lacking the allosteric interactions. As the allosteric interactions would be absent in calcium-free CaM (apo-CaM), allostery-eliminated calcium-bound CaM (holo-CaM) models were constructed by combining the apo-CaM’s linker and the holo-CaM’s N- and C-lobe. Before the comparison, the ‘real’ and ‘model’ structures were clustered and cluster–cluster relationship was determined by a principal component analysis. The structures were compared based on the relationship, then, a distance map and a contact probability analysis clarified that the inter-domain motion is regulated by several groups of inter-domain contacting residue pairs. The analyses suggested that these residues cause inter-domain translation and rotation, and as a consequence, the motion encourage structural diversity. The resultant diversity would contribute to the functional versatility of CaM.     

Local Environmental Knowledge,Talk, and Skepticism: Using ‘LES’ to Distinguish ‘LEK’ from ‘LET’ in Newfoundland

The actual evidence observed in studies of LEK (local environmental knowledge) is nearly always talk about the environment, or what we refer to as LET (local environmental talk), with the claim of studying LEK usually being built upon the implicit assumption that talk about the environment is the expression of knowledge about the environment. We suggest that it is critically important for researchers to question this assumption, especially when the distinction between LET and LEK is also emphasized by local people themselves. In the case we present here, residents of small fishing villages on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland are routinely skeptical about what other local residents say about the environment; that is, they engage in LES (local environmental skepticism). We suggest that paying explicit attention to LES can help distinguish LEK from LET.     

Contesting the ‘model minority’: racialization,youth culture and ‘British Chinese’/‘Oriental’ nights

While racialized youth are often central in debates on citizenship, multiculturalism and belonging, those ascribed as ‘British Chinese’ are constructed as model minorities, lacking a hybridized culture but insulated from racism, and thus invisible in these discussions. This article argues, however, that the model minority discourse is itself a specific form of contemporary racialization that revives ‘yellow peril’ discourses on the capacities of particular ‘Oriental’ bodies. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, it examines how young people challenge these constructions, by drawing on popular culture to organize and participate in what they call ‘British Chinese’ and, more provocatively, ‘Oriental’ nightlife spaces. It analyses how through these spaces participants forge a sense of identity that allows them to reimagine themselves as racialized subjects. It demonstrates how these spaces constitute transient sites of experimental belonging, facilitating new cultural politics and social identifications that at once contest reified conceptions of British Chineseness yet also create new exclusions.     

Bdelloid rotifers: ‘sleeping beauties’ and ‘evolutionary scandals’, but not only

Bdelloid rotifers are mostly known for two peculiarities, continuous parthenogenetic reproduction and dormancy in response to habitat desiccation, a phenomenon named anhydrobiosis. These uncommon traits earned them the names of ‘evolutionary scandals’ and ‘sleeping beauties’, respectively. Relevant aspects of bdelloid biology have recently been described that connect parthenogenesis to anhydrobiosis and that might account for their evolutionary survival in spite of the conservative reproduction. In the present study, I explore recent literature, in the attempt to disentangle the apparent incongruency between the apomictic reproduction and the presumed long-term evolutionary survival of bdelloid species. Recent results remarkably improved our knowledge of bdelloid population biology, genetics, and molecular biology. The most relevant findings concern (i) acquisition of foreign genes through horizontal transfer, (ii) presence of divergent sequences possibly corresponding to ancient gene duplications and (iii) capacity to escape parasites: events that appear to be connected with dormancy. I also address the results of recent studies on the relationships between bdelloids and other rotifers, including acanthocephalans, in an attempt to highlight similarities and differences that should be clarified to better understand phylogenetic relationship among the Rotifera sensu lato.

     

‘After the break’: re-conceptualizing ethnicity,national identity and ‘Malaysian-Chinese’ identities

Focusing on ethnic Chinese as cultural citizens of the nation, this paper examines national identity in the context of generational change. In so doing, it connects to colonialist conceptions of identity the dominant framework of ethnicity that operates in Malaysia. It argues that this framework allows for the nationalist imagining of ‘Malaysian-Chinese’ as ‘outsiders’. In probing the complex conceptual relationship between ethnicity, national identity and cultural citizenship, this article asks: How does ‘ethnicity’ enter into negotiations over the ‘national’ in the cultural realm? What are the notions of cultural difference and national otherness that operate in the negative dualisms by which nation and ethnicity are defined? How are these dualisms tied to notions of authenticity and cultural citizenship? Using the novel The Harmony Silk Factory by Malaysian author Tash Aw to address these questions, this paper argues the need to rethink current policies and narratives of ethnic and national identity in Malaysia.     

A submerged culture system for rapid micropropagation of the commercially important aquarium plant, ‘Amazon sword’ (Echinodorus ‘Indian Red’)

Echinodorus ‘Indian Red’ is an underwater plant, used worldwide for aquarium ornamentation. An efficient method for in vitro propagation and plantlet acclimatization of this popular aquarium plant was standardized. Surface-disinfected shoot-tips were cultured in submerged conditions in a solid–liquid bilayer medium, consisting of an upper, liquid layer (sterile distilled water) and a lower, solid layer Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 3.0% (w/v) sucrose, 0.8% (w/v) agar-agar, and plant growth regulators (PGRs) in different combinations and concentrations. The combination of 2.5 mg L⁻¹ 6-benzylaminopurine and 1.0 mg L⁻¹ α-naphthaleneacetic acid improved the multiplication rate to a maximum of 26.8 ± 0.51 shoots per explant after 60 d of culture. The number of multiplied shoots increased with each regeneration cycle, thus from only 26.8 ± 0.51 shoots per explant (first regeneration cycle), this number increased to 33.5 ± 0.58 (second regeneration cycle), and to 38.3 ± 0.62 for the third regeneration cycle with the same medium composition. The highest number of roots (8.3 ± 0.28) per shoot was induced in the presence of 1.0 mg L⁻¹ indole-3-butyric acid, but further growth of these roots was stunted. The best rooting was achieved on PGR-free ½-strength MS medium, where 6.1 ± 0.21 roots per shoot were induced with 5.8 ± 0.35 cm length after 30 d of culture. The regenerated plantlets were successfully acclimatized to submerged underwater conditions, with 100% survival rate. The present protocol is suitable for the commercial propagation of Echinodorus ‘Indian Red’ for aquarium-industries.

     

Structural and Narrative Reconstruction of Rural Residents’ Representations of ‘Nature’, ‘Wildlife’, and ‘Landscape’

The objective of this paper is the structural and narrative reconstruction of representations of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’, held by rural residents of the Dadia Forest Reserve. Data collection involved in-depth interviews. Employing a social representations’ approach, we recovered representational elements that are expected in the case of rural belief systems, such as negative dispositions towards wolves and foxes, as well as elements of an urban adherence, such as nature’s independence. Representational elements refer to visual aspects of the countryside, which seem compatible with the figurative nucleus of the rural idyll. Concerning ‘wildlife’, residents focused on vultures, which comprise the main tourist attraction of the reserve. Scientific knowledge adds to the complexity of the narrative schema, which corresponds to the representation of ‘wildlife’. Interviewees perceived the rural landscape as an interface between the natural and the human-conditioned environment. Our study shows that interviewees make no reference to environmental conservation or quality of life issues, as it could be expected according to relatively wide definitions of the term ‘environmentalism’. Environmental messages reinforced by ecotourism development seem to be recalled primarily in terms of their compatibility with the perceived economic benefit of local people. Despite ecotourism development, representational elements that diverge from a tourist version of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’ were not pronounced within rural belief-systems. Further interventions within the study area are needed, in order to address a variety of topics under the environmental conservation discourse and raise the environmental awareness of rural residents.

‘Mental’ in ‘southie’: Individual,family, and community responses to psychosis in South Boston

The deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients is a deeply cultural as well as political task. It entails the sharing of responsibility for human distress with family and community. Consequently, the locus of social control has also shifted from psychiatric and medical expertise to community and legal institutions. Diagnosis and treatment models must be more compatible with lay explanatory models. This paper explores the various meanings of going mental and being mental in the white, working class, ethnic neighborhood of South Boston. The data are extracted from a study of the impact of deinstitutionalization on a cohort of middle-aged, psychiatric patients discharged from Boston State Hospital in the attempt to return them to community living. Individual, family, and community responses to, and interpretations of, the symptoms of mental distress are discussed. The study indicates that even seriously disturbed individuals are sensitive to cultural meanings and social cues regarding the perception, expression, and content of psychiatric episodes. While madness invariably disenfranchises, it does not necessarily deculturate the individual.     

‘PARAMEDIC-2: Big study,small result’

The PARAMEDIC-2 trial demonstrated that the use of adrenaline compared with placebo in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) resulted in a small increase in 30-day survival, but was associated with a higher number of survivors with severe neurological impairment. These findings received a lot of attention, and generated a widespread discussion about the role of adrenaline in cardiac arrest. In this point of view, we aim to place the PARAMEDIC-2 results in the right perspective by comparing the relative effect of adrenaline to other determinants of cerebral blood flow.

     

A rapid,single leaf assay for detecting the presence of ‘S’-male-sterile cytoplasm in maize

Summary A simple, rapid, and reproducible assay is described for determining unambiguously the presence of S-type cytoplasm in male-sterile and male-fertile (restored) maize lines. Because the assay requires only 0.5 g leaf segment per sample, it is a single plant assay and the plant is not destroyed. Plants at any developmental stage can be used. The assay involves a 30 sec homogenization, 20 min centrifugation, one hour lysis, overnight agarose electrophoresis, 30 min gel staining, and photography of the gel to produce a result in much less than 24 hr. Many samples can be assayed simultaneously. The various assay methods available for classifying maize cytoplasms are compared and discussed.     

Nucleosome remodeling: one mechanism, many phenomena?

The term 'nucleosome remodeling' subsumes a large number of energy-dependent alterations of canonical nucleosome structure, catalyzed by dedicated ATPases in large multiprotein complexes. The importance of these factors for gene regulation and other processes with chromatin substrate have emerged from genetic studies. Mechanistic analyses of nucleosome remodeling by different enzymes provided a diverse, almost confusing phenomenology of ATP-dependent derangement of nucleosomes in vitro, suggesting that different remodeling machines follow different strategies to disrupt histone-DNA interactions. This review explores the alternative possibility that the rich phenomenology of nucleosome remodeling may be brought about by variations of one basic remodeling reaction.     

Simulation of ‘stationary’ SAP and SEP phenomena by 2-dimensional potential field modelling

In order to model the distribution of potentials in the hand due to antidromic SAP propagation and in the body due to afferent conduction of the median nerve volley, 2-dimensional matrices of the appropriate shape were constructed, each containing a ‘generator’ consisting of up to 3 ‘source’ and 3 ‘sink’ points. The value of the field potential at other sites was calculated using a finite difference method.It was shown that the potential gradient is virtually zero in matrix zones which are separated from the region containing the generator by a constriction in the boundary of the conductor. Points on the far side of the constriction remain virtually equipotential, at a level determined by the potential at the junction. This is naturally influened by the proximity of the generator, so that as the generator approaches the constriction a potential difference will develop between points on the far side, irrespective of their distance from the junction, and other remote parts of the matrix. In the context of human SAPs and SEPs, such factors may be of paramount importance in the generation of so-called ‘stationary’ or ‘far-field’ potentials.With additional postulates concerning the manner in which the SAP is attenuated by the termination of axons as it propagates through the hand, and the course taken by the median nerve volley between the arm and the neck, it was possible to model the majority of stationary SAP phenomena described by Kimura et al. (1984), and also the distribution and latency of the P9 SEP component following median nerve stimulation.     

Culturalizing politics,hyper-politicizing ‘culture’: ‘White’ vs. ‘Black Turks’ and the making of authoritarian populism in Turkey

This paper focuses on the uses and abuses of two terms, ‘White’ and ‘Black Turk’, which have been significant in the ways modern Turkish society and national identity have been defined and contested in recent decades. Initially emerging in social analysis in the 1990s, ‘White Turk’ was a metaphor for and critique of the class culture, subjectivity and worldviews of the ‘new middle classes’ in a period of rapid integration to neoliberalism and globalized capitalism. Over time, both White and Black Turks have come to be used as part of a politics of identity and a politics of authenticity to characterize who are seen as the ‘authentic self’ and inauthentic others of national identity and to assert different visions for the future of Turkish society. White Turk has been adopted as an identity by outspoken members of the media and business elite, whereas its binary opposite, Black Turk, has been appropriated by Islamist politicians of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) as a metaphor to characterize the marginalization and purported oppression of their conservative Muslim constituency. As White and Black Turks were adopted as self-proclaimed identities, they provided a basis for a culturalist depiction of Turkish society, contributing over time to an increasingly divisive politics. Even though the AKP initially used the reference to White and Black Turks to appeal to specific demands for inclusion, as it increased its grip on power, it also (hyper)politicized the terms to articulate nativist claims to authenticity. In recent years, this nativist populism has been used to justify increasing authoritarianism and to delegitimize belonging and political participation of those deemed inauthentic others of the body politics.     

Protoplast culture and regeneration from Brassica oleracea ‘rapid cycling’ and other varieties

The results are reported for the first time on successful plant regeneration from mesophyll-derived protoplasts of rapid cycling B. oleracea. Comparative data were also presented on plant regeneration from mesophyll-derived protoplasts of two other varieties namely var. botrytis and var. gemmifera. It was found that a modified Pelletier (Pelletier et al. 1983) protocol is highly beneficial for protoplast culture and plant regeneration from mesophyll-derived protoplasts. The plating efficiency of B. oleracea rapid cycling protoplasts was, in the best combination of isolation method, culture technique and culture media 4.5%±0.4% and the plant regeneration frequency approximately 15%. Plant regeneration was further improved by transferring the calli from the D medium of Pelletier to a callus growth medium (MS11) and subsequently to the K₃ regeneration medium of Glimelius (Glimelius 1984). ‘Steps’ to Agency: Gregory Bateson,Perception, and Biosemantics

Gregory Bateson was welcomed into Biosemiotics as one of its precursors along with C. S. Peirce and Jacob von Uexküll He certainly endorsed Peirce pragmatic concern with learning as an essential characteristic of mammalian life, and also endorsed von Uexküll’s notion that the fundamental unit of animate existence is organism plus econiche. But he was at odds both with the subjectivism and with the cognitivism that connects Peirce to von Uexküll. Bateson rests his case on information theory which, he believes replaces many metaphysical notions that were the background to Peirce and von Uexküll’s approaches to ‘meaning.’ His idea of cybernetic ‘feedback’ in information circuits or networks yields a new understanding of recursiveness. Yet biofeedback in mammalian interaction had to be wrestled away from technical cybernetics and its thermodynamic rules about information, for the latter payed no attention to ‘meaning’ (“Bioentropy” section). Of the contrasts between Peirce and Bateson, the most significant is that Bateson regards ‘difference’ as primary to perception, while Peirce is concerned with continuity as primary from perception to cognition. This contrast is at the heart of Bateson’s Korzybski Lecture (see “On the Title of ‘Steps’” section), and shows how ‘difference’ in Learning develops orders and levels (see “Memory and Learning” section) leading to different categories of learning. With regard to perception, Bateson argues that the processes of perception do not bind perception to conscious awareness in any exclusive sense. Further, patterns of perception are not bounded by the skin for they include all external pathways along which information can travel. This recursive activity develops ‘agency’ (“Perception and Consciousness” section). We are ourselves interact with living mental ‘things’ but interactions with animate ‘creatura,’ is not the same as the objective interactions we purse in measuring inanimate material ‘things’ (pleroma) (“How Bioentropy Informs Bateson’s Notions of Pleroma and Creatura ” section). The grasping of context in communicative interaction, for example, is unique to creatura (“Context in Recursive Communication” section). Recognition of ‘difference’ occurs through communicative interactions and is meta-physical (without dimension). The pattern of interaction is the ‘thing,’ and ostensive aspects of communication are contextual, inclusive of all ‘external’ aspects vital for interpretation of ‘signals’ between initiators and responders to messages. Towards the end of his life, Bateson’s concerns with non-human conditions of ‘meaning’ and ‘mind’ in nature, resulted in his dropping several of the Peirce’s conditions of semiosis, as he looks at ‘meaning’ without language. He rests his method the propositional order of Peirce’s abduction rather than the latter’s full array of abduction, induction and deduction. Bateson is supported by the Biosemantics of Ruth Millikan, this paper will argue, who also believes that the derivation of meaning in animals through natural signs requires the stripping away of any ‘meaning rationalism’ (“Meaning Rationalism” section). Together they provide joint conclusions about as sign use in the ecosystems of creatura (“Conclusion” section).
