The article analyzes event-related potentials in the Go/NoGo test of patients with schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder in relation to healthy subjects. Differences identified in the group of patients with schizophrenia are consistent with previous studies and indicate disruption in processes associated with different stages of visual information processing and executive functions. Specific features of brain activity in patients with schizotypal personality disorder were significantly less pronounced and presumably pointed to changes in the processes of attention redistribution and action monitoring. The results agree well with the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder, so that this technique can be considered a possible additional diagnostic criterion for these disorders.  相似文献

Schizophrenia and nicotine addiction are both highly heritable phenotypes. Because individuals with schizophrenia have a higher rate of smoking than those in the general population, one could hypothesize that genes associated with smoking might be overrepresented in schizophrenia and thus help explain their increased smoking incidence. Although a number of genes have been proposed to explain the increased smoking risk in schizophrenia, none of them have been consistently linked to smoking and schizophrenia, and thus difficult to explain the increased smoking in schizophrenia. A functional smoking-related nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α5 subunit gene (CHRNA5) nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs16969968 (Asp398Asn) has recently been discovered and replicated. As such, we tested whether this variant contributes to smoking in schizophrenia in a sample of 313 schizophrenia patients and 525 controls. The Asp398Asn risk allele is significantly associated with smoking severity independently in schizophrenia patient smokers (P = 0.001) and control smokers (P = 0.029). Furthermore, the same risk allele is significantly associated with schizophrenia in both Caucasian (P = 0.022) and African-American (P = 0.006) nonsmoker schizophrenia patients compared with control nonsmokers. Intriguingly, this SNP was not significantly associated with smoking status (smokers vs. nonsmokers) in either schizophrenia patients or controls. Therefore, our study identifies a genetic variant that is simultaneously linked to smoking and schizophrenia in the same cohort, but whether this SNP contributes to the increased smoking prevalence in schizophrenia patients requires additional studies.  相似文献

An experiment is reported which evaluated performance on a 10-sec unfilled time interval estimation task before, during, and after physical work on a cycle ergometer at relative intensities of 30 and 60% VO2max. Results from eleven healthy male subjects revealed a significant increase in time estimation variability and a decrease in the mean estimated time intervals during exercise compared to non-exercise phases. These findings are part of a growing body of evidence which indicates that exercise and its severity has a substantive impact on perceptual and cognitive performance, particularly the ability to synchronize and anticipate the timing of events.  相似文献

Axial speed of sound (SOS) measurements have been successfully applied to noninvasively evaluate tendon load, while preliminary studies showed that this technique also has a potential clinical interest in the follow up of tendon injuries. The ultrasound propagation theory predicts that the SOS is determined by the effective stiffness, mass density and Poisson's ratio of the propagating medium. Tendon stiffness characterizes the tissue's mechanical quality, but it is often measured in quasi-static condition and for entire tendon segments, so it might not be the same as the effective stiffness which determines the SOS. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the relationship between axial SOS and tendon's nonlinear elasticity, measured in standard laboratory conditions, and to evaluate if tendon's mass density and cross-sectional area (CSA) affect the SOS level. Axial SOS was measured during in vitro cycling of 9 equine superficial digital tendons. Each tendon's stiffness was characterized with a tangent modulus (the continuous derivative of the true stress/true strain curve) and an elastic modulus (the slope of this curve's linear region). Tendon's SOS was found to linearly vary with the square root of the tangent modulus during loading; tendon's SOS level was found correlated to the elastic modulus's square root and inversely correlated to the tendon's CSA, but it was not affected by tendon's mass density. These results confirm that tendon's tangent and elastic moduli, measured in laboratory conditions, are related to axial SOS and they represent one of its primary determinants.  相似文献

Segregation analysis of schizophrenia and related disorders   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Segregation analysis was applied to 79 nuclear families ascertained through chronic schizophrenic probands. Analysis was performed on the diagnosis of schizophrenia alone and on schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder (milder phenotype) combined. The models used were the transmission probability model and the mixed model. Because the disease is associated with reduced fertility, all likelihoods were calculated conditional on parental phenotypes. However, compatibility of the mating-type distribution predicted by each model with the observed was also examined. In all analyses, results suggested consistency with genetic transmission. In the analysis of schizophrenia alone, discrimination among models was difficult. In the analysis including the milder phenotypes, all single-locus models without polygenic background were excluded, while pure polygenic inheritance could not be eliminated. The polygenic model also gave good agreement with supplementary observations (lifetime disease incidences, mating-type distribution, and monozygotic twin concordance). The estimated components of variance for the polygenic model were: polygenes (H) 81.9%; common sib environment (B) 6.9%; random environment (R) 11.2%. Although the polygenic model was parsimonious, segregation analysis and the supplementary observations were also consistent with a mixed model, with a single major locus making a large contribution to genetic liability. Such a locus is more likely to be recessive than dominant, with a high gene frequency and low penetrance. The most likely recessive mixed model gave the following partition of liability variance: major locus, 62.9%; polygenes, 19.5%; common sib environment, 6.6%; and random environment, 11.0%.  相似文献

It is obvious, at least qualitatively, that small animals move their locomotory apparatus faster than large animals: small insects move their wings invisibly fast, while large birds flap their wings slowly. However, quantitative observations have been difficult to obtain from free-ranging swimming animals. We surveyed the swimming behaviour of animals ranging from 0.5 kg seabirds to 30 000 kg sperm whales using animal-borne accelerometers. Dominant stroke cycle frequencies of swimming specialist seabirds and marine mammals were proportional to mass(-0.29) (R(2)= 0.99, n = 17 groups), while propulsive swimming speeds of 1-2 m s(-1) were independent of body size. This scaling relationship, obtained from breath-hold divers expected to swim optimally to conserve oxygen, does not agree with recent theoretical predictions for optimal swimming. Seabirds that use their wings for both swimming and flying stroked at a lower frequency than other swimming specialists of the same size, suggesting a morphological trade-off with wing size and stroke frequency representing a compromise. In contrast, foot-propelled diving birds such as shags had similar stroke frequencies as other swimming specialists. These results suggest that muscle characteristics may constrain swimming during cruising travel, with convergence among diving specialists in the proportions and contraction rates of propulsive muscles.  相似文献

The heart rate (HR) response to stimulation is described as a biphasic function with a phase of deceleration and acceleration. The deceleration is interpreted as a component of orienting behavior or of stimulus intake and acceleration as a sign of internal information processing going along with the rejection of external stimulation. However, there are many authors who do not support this assumption. The question arises whether the heart rate patterns are concomitant or even dependent on breathing behavior. Also the sensitivity of HR as an indicator of influence of selfregulatory processes on physiological functions remains still a problem for future studies. In general it may be concluded that the HR is one of the relatively independent indices of changes in the level of activation or mobilization. The HR in healthy subjects is a function not only of intensity and modality of the stimulus but also of prestimulus level of activation and its dependence on breathing behavior. At the same time there is evidence of a connection of HR with high cognitive processes which in an interaction of the organism and environment together with volitional processes have a regulatory function.  相似文献

We assessed the relationship of insulin resistance with cognitive decline and brain atrophy over two years in early Alzheimer's disease (AD, n=48) and nondemented controls (n=61). Intravenous glucose tolerance tests were conducted at baseline to determine insulin area-under-the-curve (AUC). A standard battery of cognitive tasks and MRI were conducted at baseline and 2-year follow-up. In nondemented controls, higher baseline insulin AUC was associated with 2-year decline in global cognitive performance (beta=-0.36, p=0.005). In early AD, however, higher insulin AUC was associated with less decline in global cognitive performance (beta=0.26, p=0.06), slower global brain atrophy (beta=0.40, p=0.01) and less regional atrophy in the bilateral hippocampi and cingulate cortices. While insulin resistance is associated with cognitive decline in nondemented aging, higher peripheral insulin may have AD-specific benefits or insulin signaling may be affected by systemic physiologic changes associated with AD. N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) represent a subclass of glutamate receptors that play a critical role in neuronal development and physiology. We report here the generation of mice expressing only 5% of normal levels of the essential NMDAR1 (NR1) subunit. Unlike NR1 null mice, these mice survive to adulthood and display behavioral abnormalities, including increased motor activity and stereotypy and deficits in social and sexual interactions. These behavioral alterations are similar to those observed in pharmacologically induced animal models of schizophrenia and can be ameliorated by treatment with haloperidol or clozapine, antipsychotic drugs that antagonize dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors. These findings support a model in which reduced NMDA receptor activity results in schizophrenic-like behavior and reveals how pharmacological manipulation of monoaminergic pathways can affect this phenotype.  相似文献

A replicative analysis of associations of 15 SNPs located in the regions of 11 genes (TCF4, VRK2, NOTCH4, ZNF804A, AGBL1, RELN, ZFP64P1, KCNB2, CSMD1, CPVL, NRIP1) and three intergenic regions (SLCO6A1/LINCOO491, LOC105376248/LOC105376249, SPA17/NRGN) with schizophrenia was conducted in the Russian population of the Siberian region. These SNPs were previously identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of schizophrenia and cognitive abnormalities. The present study confirmed associations of KCNB2 rs2247572, CSMD1 rs2616984, and intergenic rs12807809 located in SPA17/NRGN with schizophrenia. It was established that the frequency of the CSMD1 rs2616984 G/G genotype was higher in patients compared to the control group (OR = 1.73; CI: 1.14–2.62; р = 0.0337). The frequencies of the KCNB2 rs2247572 TT genotype (OR = 0.41; CI: 0.20–0.87; р = 0.0485) and intergenic rs12807809 CT genotype located in SPA17/NRGN (OR = 0.70; CI: 0.53–0.94; р = 0.0464) were significantly decreased in patients compared to the control group.  相似文献

This study evaluated the performance of a walking speed estimation system based on using an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a combination of accelerometers and gyroscopes. The walking speed estimation algorithm segments the walking sequence into individual stride cycles (two steps) based on the inverted pendulum-like behaviour of the stance leg during walking and it integrates the angular velocity and linear accelerations of the shank to determine the displacement of each stride. The evaluation was performed in both treadmill and overground walking experiments with various constraints on walking speed, step length and step frequency to provide a relatively comprehensive assessment of the system. Promising results were obtained in providing accurate and consistent walking speed/step length estimation in different walking conditions. An overall percentage root mean squared error (%RMSE) of 4.2 and 4.0% was achieved in treadmill and overground walking experiments, respectively. With an increasing interest in understanding human walking biomechanics, the IMU-based ambulatory system could provide a useful walking speed/step length measurement/control tool for constrained walking studies.  相似文献

Honeybees returning from foraging trips were video-filmed while they walked through a narrow transparent gangway to reach the hive entrance. On their way they were presented with black-and-white gratings viewed underneath as well as to both sides of the gangway. Bees could exit the gangway through one of two or three side exits installed at different distances from the gangway entrance. In one set of experiments, the substrate on which the bees walked was moved either in the bee's direction or against it. In another set of experiments, the substrate was stationary, but the pattern was moved in one or the other direction. The bee's walking speed (WS) was evaluated from the video tapes. When the substrate moved against, or the pattern in the bee's direction, in either case decreasing the speed of pattern flow (PFS), the bees increased WS, and, at the same time, they preferred the more distant exit. When the substrate moved in, or the pattern against the bee's direction, thus increasing PFS, WS decreased and the bees preferred the nearer exit. These results suggest that the speed of optic flow controls the speed of locomotion and might therefore also serve for assessing the distance travelled.Abbreviations PFS pattern-flow speed - WS walking speed Dedicated to Hans-Jochen Autrum, editor emeritus, for help in giving birth to this and many other papers over very many years, often with criticism but nevertheless with encouragement and sympathy.  相似文献
