Diet and prey size spectrum of pikeperch in lakes in central Finland   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The stomach content of pikeperch Sander lucioperca was studied in 24 lakes in central Finland. The most important prey species was smelt Osmerus eperlanus then perch Perca fluviatilis . The proportion of cyprinids as prey increased with pikeperch total length ( L T) and lake phosphorus content. Prey L T and pikeperch L T correlated positively, but the prey‐to‐predator size ratio correlated negatively with pikeperch L T.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The rate of gastric evacuation in perch (Perca fluviatilis) (89–170 mm length) fed on fish larvae was studied at temperatures between 12.0 and 21.7°C. Gastric evacuation rates were usually described by an exponential function. The instantaneous rate of gastric evacuation ( R ) was constant for a large number of different meal sizes. At higher food rations, a lag phase in digestion was found during the first part of digestion, and this ration size was smaller for smaller perch (89–110 mm) than for bigger perch (120–170 mm). Below these larger meal sizes, gastric evacuation was similar for the different size classes studied. The relation between R and temperature was described by an exponential function. The effects of meal size, number of food items, fish size and temperature on the rate of gastric evacuation are discussed.  相似文献

Using a volume dependent model of gastric evacuation, the effects of temperature and fish size were examined. Rates of gastric evacuation were unaffected by fish size but increased with increasing temperature. The relationship between maximum stomach volume and fish weight was found to be a linear one. From information of gastric evacuation rates and stomach volume, the amount of food evacuated from the stomach per day was calculated for different size classes of fish. Daily food evacuation increased in proportion to body weight to the power 0·68. Assuming these methods give a crude estimate of daily food intake, the results are discussed in relation to published work on food intake in fishes.  相似文献

No effect of prey size on gastric evacuation rate was found in whiting Merlangius merlangus .Prey energy density explained most of the data variation among fish prey, and evacuation time increased by a factor 1·6–1·7 with prey energy density increasing from 3·4 to 5·6 kJ g−1. The power model expanded to include predator size, temperature, and prey energy density could describe gastric evacuation in whiting fed fish prey. Krill Meganyctiphanes norvegica was evacuated at a rate similar to fish prey of equal energy density, while the evacuation of brown shrimp Crangon crangon took almost twice as long.  相似文献

A new model approach to gastric evacuation in predatory fishes was shown to give accurate and reliable estimates of evacuation. It is believed that such a model would prove particularly useful in understanding predator‐prey interactions in natural systems. The model is a simple, geometric abstraction of the square root model predicting that evacuation time is proportional to the square root of meal size in accordance with extensive empirical evidence. Digestive processes are assumed to be restricted to an outer surface of total stomach content that is represented by the curved side of a cylinder. This way, total stomach content is considered a cylinder of constant length the mass of which is gradually reduced by successive peeling off its side leaving the ends unaffected. The fundamental rate δ describes mean thickness of the layer that is peeled off the cylinder per time unit. In the model, δ is constant independent of cylinder thickness but inversely proportional to the square root of cylinder length. Anatomical and dynamic characteristics of the stomach render this formulation of δ plausible. Using mean evacuation rate over time during evacuation of a meal, the model disregards prey heterogeneities that influence instantaneous evacuation rate. Relationships between prey heterogeneities and evacuation patterns were indicated by application of a general power model to evacuation data, and it was suggested how the effects of prey characteristics might be incorporated into the square root model to produce a generic model of gastric evacuation.  相似文献

The pattern of gastric evacuation in the plaice can be described by a single curve of curvilinear form, relating the amount of food remaining in the stomach and the post-prandial time. This curve can be transformed to linear form, conforming to a volume dependent model of evacuation. This allows the calculation of the time for complete evacuation of the stomach. The shape of the gastric evacuation curve is unchanged by the size of the meal fed. With increase in temperature however, the form of the curve does change, resulting in shorter times for complete evacuation.  相似文献

Pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), the studied species, is the most important amongst freshwater fish species, commercially, in the brackish Baltic Sea. We studied the effects of water temperature on three aspects of pikeperch growth in Haminanlahti bay, Finland. First, annual length increments were related to age and temperature using a non-linear growth model. Since length increments were based on back-calculated lengths, i.e. repeated measurements, the first order autoregressive covariance structure was used. The model showed that when temperature increased annual length increments also increased, whereas increased age reduced annual length increments. In the modelling, the best fit was found with water degree-days over 10°C. Second, the onset of growth of pikeperch in spring had a positive relationship with water temperature and a negative one with the length of pikeperch. The latter finding suggests that smaller, non-mature pikeperch starts to grow earlier than larger, mature pikeperch. Third, the year-class strength was positively correlated with water degree-days, and the year-class strength negatively affected annual length increments. This indicates that within a strong year-class subsequent growth is reduced more that within a weak year-class, suggesting density-dependent growth.  相似文献

Prey-specific gastric evacuation rates and digestion state indices were modelled for gag Mycteroperca microlepis , a large warm-temperate grouper, consuming meals of either baitfish (scaled sardine Harengula jaguana ) or crab (purple swimmer crab Portunus gibbesii ). Power exponential models best fit the wet and dry mass gastric evacuation data and the average digestion indices over post-prandial time (PPT), regardless of prey type or gag size (Adjusted R2 ≥ 0·79). Gag mass ( M ) or total length ( L T) incorporated into an expanded power exponential model, along with exponential scalars, resulted in highly predictive ( R2 ≥ 0·87) gastric evacuation and average digestion state models. The expanded power exponential models fit to the baitfish and crab wet mass gastric evacuation data differed significantly (Kimura's likelihood ratio test (LRT), both P < 0·001). Gag consuming crab showed a digestive lag period of at least 4 h (wet mass) and took a longer time to complete digestion relative to gag consuming baitfish. Gag, as well as many other warm-temperate and tropical groupers, consume a mixture of fish and crab prey and they will therefore require the development of a consumption model that incorporates mixed-prey gastric evacuation models.  相似文献

The population of pikeperch in L. Peipsi was studied with respect to average number per haul, length distribution of fishes in experimental catches, condition factor (according to Fulton) and length-weight relationship in autumn 1993–1995.The relatively good growth rate and condition of pikeperch in the lake indicates that the waterbody is suitable for this fish. However, the length and age distribution of pikeperch in different years as well as the decreasing total number of fishes in catches demonstrate that the population of pikeperch is suppressed due to overfishing during the last years.  相似文献

Gastric evacuation experiments, performed with groups of Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus and three different prey species: sprat Sprattus sprattus , sandeel Ammodytes marinus and krill Meganectyphanes norwegicus , revealed a strong temperature effect on gastric evacuation ( Q 10=4.l) and a curvilinear evacuation with a shape intermediate between the square root and the exponential model. From the experiments with krill, where no internal tagging was possible, the medians and upper quartiles of the stomach content distributions were analysed instead of individual data. From these experiments the evacuation rate of krill was 60% higher than that of sandeel. An additional simulation study confirmed that the use of medians results in more accurate estimates of the evacuation rates when compared to the arithmetic means.  相似文献

We studied life‐history traits focusing on the growth and condition of the pikeperch Sander lucioperca to evaluate its phenotypic plasticity when introduced to new environments. Pikeperch is a non‐native fish introduced to Iberian freshwater fauna in 1998 that quickly spread to other river basins through human‐mediated activities, occupying now a wide variety of habitats along mainland Portugal. Condition (K and SMI), fork length at age, and length–weight relationships were studied for Portuguese populations. Pikeperch fork length for ages 1, 2, 3, and 4 was different between several populations. We applied generalized linear models (GLM) to study the influence of habitat type, latitude, altitude, time after first detection, and fish prey richness on pikeperch populations size at age 4 and condition. We observed higher condition values on populations from lower altitudes at lentic systems more recently introduced. But higher fork length at age 4 was found in populations from higher altitudes, on older populations with higher prey richness. Habitat type, time since first detection, and fish fauna composition are discussed as the main environmental factors explaining the observed phenotypic plasticity with concerns on predatory impact on native fauna.  相似文献

A mechanistic gastric evacuation model of mixed stomach contents was established. Its simple generic nature should prove useful for studying predator‐prey interactions in fish communities. Only prey lengths were required as additional input. Surface dependent digestive processes were considered to act on equal fractions of individual prey‐cylinder surfaces. Primary and interactive effects of size, energy density and resistance to digestion of individual prey in a stomach were described by the model. Model predictions of results from experiments on gastric evacuation of meals composed of different prey types demonstrated the capability of this model, as opposed to previously applied model principles, to predict evacuation of mixed stomach contents involving the three above‐mentioned prey characteristics. The study furthermore illustrated that estimates of food ration might be severely biased by using improperly formulated effects of prey characters on gastric evacuation, and demonstrated that the new model holds the potential to predict food ration and diet composition for wild populations of predatory fishes.  相似文献

Biological traits (distribution, reproduction, age composition, body length and weight) of pikeperch Sander lucioperca from channel parts of the Akhtuba River, remote from the Volga Delta, are investigated. In the investigated stretch of the river, movements of most specimens of pikeperch are local and occur in the deep part (4?10 m) of the channel. Aggregations of fish are not confined to any definite points but move along the extensive stretch of broads. Pikeperch prefer near-bottom biotopes confined to the zone of stable hydrodynamic eddies in places of complicated bottom relief—transverse crests and longitudinal channel crests. For the first time, it is found that pikeperch in the under-ice period move to the shallow zone of submersed inshore shrubs. The age structure and body length and weight of pikeperch differ from those in the Volga Delta and correspond more to the populations from northern and northwestern parts of the species area. Pikeperch spawn only in temporary water bodies of the accessory system, within a short period at the temperature 11?17°С. The data on biology of pikeperch from the Akhtuba channel indicate the populational level of differences from the Volga Delta pikeperch.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of prey exoskeleton characteristics on gastric evacuation patterns in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. Three distinct stages were highlighted in the gastric evacuation of crustacean prey characterized by a robust exoskeleton. The experiments confirmed that the three shrimp species, Pandalus borealis, Pandalus montagui and Eualus macilentus, and the crab Chionoecetes opilio, were evacuated from the stomach at different rates. The duration of all stages increased with increasing ash (and carbonate) content of the fresh prey. Thickness, chemical composition and morphology of the prey exoskeleton all affected gastric evacuation: duration of initial delay, overall evacuation rate and a decreased evacuation rate at the end of the process. The power exponential function (PEF), with its shape parameter, described the course of evacuation for these prey types well, especially the initial delay. The PEF does not, however, allow describing evacuation by the current stomach content mass independent of meal size, which limits its usefulness in estimating consumption rates of wild G. morhua. To predict and describe gastric evacuation of prey with a robust exoskeleton, it is therefore suggested that the square‐root function be expanded with an initial lag phase, coupled to the mechanistically based cylinder model of gastric evacuation.  相似文献

Synopsis Gastric evacuation rate estimates often suffer from an important bias caused by fitting experimentally-derived data distributions that are inherently constricted by the X-axis (Y = 0). Monte Carlo simulations were used to evaluate the bias. Truncating constricted distributions prior to curve fitting was suggested as a means to circumvent the problem. A food consumption model developed by D.S. Robson was presented. It employs the integral of the function fit to percentage gastric evacuation data, and does not require an a priori assumption of exponential gastric evacuation. The methods were illustrated using experimental gastric evacuation data and stomach contents data for fishery-caught yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares.  相似文献

During an eight years period the onset and development of piscivory of 0+ pikeperch was studied in the natural environment of a shallow, eutrophic Dutch lake. In some years the piscivory started as early as halfway June at a pikeperch size of circa 20 mm. The 0+ pikeperch predated mainly on the smaller 0+ smelt because these were the most slender preyfish available. The 0+ pikeperch is less and the 0+ perch is much less available because of their larger circumference. Small 0+ bream and roach became only available when their growth was retarded. The positively skewed size distribution of the 0+ pikeperch halfway June is precursory for the development of bimodality in the size distribution later in the season. A second modus of larger, piscivorous, 0+ pikeperch became relatively important in years when smelt was abundant. The survival rate of this category was appearantly higher than that of the smaller planktivorous individuals.  相似文献

The effects of prey type and prey preparation on the mathematical forms and rates describing gastric evacuation in little skate Raja erinacea were examined. Linear and square–root models best described the gastric evacuation of whole, thin–shelled krill Meganyctiphanes norvegica , clam feet/muscle Spisula solidissima/Placopecten magellanicus , polychaetes Glycera spp. and sand lance Ammodytes dubius . Evacuation of krill and clams was faster than polychaetes and sand lance. A logistic model best described the evacuation data of thick–shelled benthic shrimp Crangon septemspinosa/Palaemonetes spp. Cut polychaetes Nereis spp. were digested at an exponential rate and were evacuated faster than would be predicted based upon comparison with live polychaetes and previously published evacuation–temperature relationships. The results of this study suggest that a single equation does not describe the evacuation process for all prey, and that whole prey should be used if laboratory–derived rates of gastric evacuation are to reflect what might occur in wild fishes.  相似文献

First year ontogenetic diet patterns and size-dependent diet partitioning of two coexisting piscivorous percids, pikeperch and Volga pikeperch were analysed in Lake Balaton. Diet patterns of the two pikeperches followed a common trend, catching larger preys at larger sizes, but in details they were different. Until 20–30 mm size age-0 pikeperch fed on planktonic microcrustaceans and were found only in the pelagic zone. After this size, from the end of May, a part of the stock shifted habitat and moved to the littoral zone to feed on Limnomysis benedeni. Majority of the stock stayed in the pelagic zone and shifted to Leptodora kindtii. In the pelagic group early piscivory, mainly cannibalism, occurred only sporadically. However, the few individuals that reached 100 mm size during the first year were typically piscivorous. Volga pikeperch stayed in the pelagic zone during the first year and shifted from planktonic microcrustaceans to benthic macroinvertebrates. General patterns of the first year diet ontogeny were similar in the different areas of Lake Balaton in both pikeperches with only some differences in the secondary food resources, especially in the share of chironomids. Chironomids were eaten at highest ratio by the two fish species in the Keszthely basin in accordance with their abundance pattern. Maximum prey sizes increased significantly with predator size in both pikeperch and Volga pikeperch. However, pikeperch ate much larger prey than did Volga pikeperch at the same size although they have a similar mouth gape to length ratio. These two, closely related pikeperches, although occur in the same habitat and have similar patterns of diet ontogeny, effectively partition food resources in Lake Balaton during the first growing season, except in the very beginning of their ontogeny at L = 5–10 mm size. It appears that age-0 Volga pikeperch is not a significant competitor for the economically highly rated pikeperch in Lake Balaton. On the other hand, it is age-0 pikeperch that might affect Volga pikeperch during its early ontogeny, in the planktivorous stage.  相似文献

Despite the fact that the stomach of turbot Psetta maxima is a curved tube that forms a half circle, it was demonstrated that gastric evacuation in this predatory flatfish fed natural prey closely followed the surface‐dependent cylinder model developed from studies on gadoids with a straight stomach. Evacuation experiments were performed on two size groups of P. maxima fed sandeel Ammodytes tobianus as well as on P. maxima fed brown shrimp Crangon crangon at three different temperatures. This enabled the provision of a gastric evacuation model for studies on P. maxima, which takes into account the effects of the explanatory variables predator size, temperature, prey energy density and resistance of prey to the digestive processes in the stomach. Basically, the cylinder model predicts that a square‐root function accurately describes gastric evacuation, which is inconsistent with the conclusion of a previous study on P. maxima that evacuation of A. tobianus is essentially linear with time. Use of the cylinder model to the values of the explanatory variables presented in the latter study, however, gave accurate predictions of the actually acquired evacuation data, which points to the generic value of the model.  相似文献
