Anger-prone individuals are volatile and frequently dangerous. Accordingly, inferring the presence of this personality trait in others was important in ancestral human populations. This inference, made under uncertainty, can result in two types of errors: underestimation or overestimation of trait anger. Averaged over evolutionary time, underestimation will have been the more costly error, as the fitness decrements resulting from physical harm or death due to insufficient vigilance are greater than those resulting from lost social opportunities due to excessive caution. We therefore hypothesized that selection has favored an upwards bias in the estimation of others' trait anger relative to estimations of other traits not characterized by such an error asymmetry. Moreover, we hypothesized that additional attributes that i) make the actor more dangerous, or ii) make the observer more vulnerable increase the error asymmetry with regard to inferring anger-proneness, and should therefore correspondingly increase this overestimation bias. In Study 1 (N = 161), a fictitious individual portrayed in a vignette was judged to have higher trait anger than trait disgust, and trait anger ratings were more responsive than trait disgust ratings to behavioral cues of emotionality. In Study 2 (N = 335), participants viewed images of angry or fearful faces. The interaction of factors indicating target's formidability (male sex), target's intent to harm (direct gaze), and perceiver's vulnerability (female sex or high belief in a dangerous world) increased ratings of the target's trait anger but not trait fear.  相似文献

Individuals use facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) to infer men's formidability. We hypothesized that fWHR assessments would form a basis for men's coalitional value, with high-fWHR men being valuable in roles requiring physical strength. Five studies (N = 1323) tested how perceptions of formidability influence coalitional decisions. In addition to replicating previous findings indicating a preference for high-fWHR men in tasks requiring strength (Study 1), the formidability inference most associated with this high-fWHR preference was perceived strength and not aggressiveness (Studies 2a, 2b). Two pre-registered studies showed that activating competitive motivations increased preferences for high-fWHR allies (Study 3), though this preference appeared driven by a tolerance for high-fWHR men rather than an interest (Study 4). Findings provide evidence for how inferences of fWHR shape interpersonal preferences based on social contexts.  相似文献

Patients with chronic low back pain exhibit characteristics such as clinical pain, psychological symptoms and neuromuscular adaptations. The purpose of this study was to determine the independent contribution of clinical pain, psychological factors and neuromuscular adaptations to disability in patients with chronic low back pain. Clinical pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, fear-avoidance beliefs, anxiety, neuromuscular adaptations to chronic pain and neuromuscular responses to experimental pain were assessed in 52 patients with chronic low back pain. Lumbar muscle electromyographic activity was assessed during a flexion–extension task (flexion relaxation phenomenon) to assess both chronic neuromuscular adaptations and neuromuscular responses to experimental pain during the task. Multiple regressions showed that independent predictors of disability included neuromuscular adaptations to chronic pain (β = 0.25, p = 0.006, sr2 = 0.06), neuromuscular responses to experimental pain (β = −0.24, p = 0.011, sr2 = 0.05), clinical pain intensity (β = 0.28, p = 0.002, sr2 = 0.08) and psychological factors (β = 0.58, p < 0.001, sr2 = 0.32). Together, these predictors accounted for 65% of variance in disability (R2 = 0.65 p < 0.001). The current investigation revealed that neuromuscular adaptations are independent from clinical pain intensity and psychological factors, and contribute to inter-individual differences in patients’ disability. This suggests that disability, in chronic low back pain patients, is determined by a combination of factors, including clinical pain, psychological factors and neuromuscular adaptations.  相似文献

Throughout vertebrate evolution, asymmetries in the ability to inflict costs on others (i.e., formidability) have determined the outcomes of contests over limited resources. Therefore, natural selection would have favored mechanisms designed to efficiently and accurately estimate the formidability of conspecifics. Although previous research has provided evidence for the existence of adaptations for formidability assessment, the design features of these mechanisms have not been fully examined. In the current study, participants underwent a battery of tasks to test hypotheses regarding the speed and automaticity of formidability assessment mechanisms. Results suggest that formidability is automatically and rapidly tracked and assessed from visual cues. With a few interesting exceptions, characteristics of the raters (N = 187) and targets (N = 64) did not influence these assessments. Additionally, we present eye–tracking data to highlight the salience of upper–body musculature as a cue to physical strength. Taken together, these findings bolster and extend evidence for formidability assessment mechanisms in humans.  相似文献

IntroductionWe aimed to determine whether the changes in muscle activity (in terms of both gross electromyography (EMG) and motor unit (MU) discharge characteristics) observed during pain are spatially organized with respect to pain location within a muscle which is the main contributor of the task.MethodsSurface and fine-wire EMG was recorded during matched low-force isometric plantarflexion from soleus (from four quadrants with fine-wire EMG and from the medial/lateral sides with surface EMG), both gastrocnemii heads, peroneus longus, and tibialis anterior. Four conditions were tested: two control conditions that each preceded contractions with pain induced in either the lateral (PainL) or medial (PainM) side of soleus.ResultsNeither the presence (p = 0.28) nor location (p = 0.19) of pain significantly altered gross muscle activity of any location (lateral/medial side of soleus, gastrocnemii, peroneus longus and tibialis anterior). Group data from 196 MUs show redistribution of MU activity throughout the four quadrants of soleus, irrespective of pain location. The significant decrease of MU discharge rate during pain (p < 0.0001; PainL: 7.3 ± 0.9–6.9 ± 1.1 Hz, PainM: 7.0 ± 1.1 to 6.6 ± 1.1 Hz) was similar for all quadrants of the soleus (p = 0.43), regardless of the pain location (p = 0.98). There was large inter-participant variation in respect to the characteristics of the altered MU discharge with pain.ConclusionResults from both surface and fine-wire EMG recordings do not support the hypothesis that muscle activity is reorganized in a simple systematic manner with respect to pain location.  相似文献

Due to altriciality and the importance of embodied capital, children's fitness is contingent on parental investment. Injury suffered by a parent therefore degrades the parent's fitness both by constraining reproduction and by diminishing the fitness of existing offspring. Due to the latter added cost, compared to non-parents, parents should be more cautious in hazardous situations, including potentially agonistic interactions. Prior research indicates that relative formidability is conceptualized in terms of size and strength. As erroneous under-estimation of a foe's formidability heightens the risk of injury, parents should therefore conceptualize a potential antagonist as larger, stronger, and of more sinister intent than should non-parents; secondarily, the presence of one's vulnerable children should exacerbate this pattern. We tested these predictions in the U.S. using reactions to an evocative vignette, administered via the Internet (Study 1), and in-person assessments of the facial photograph of a purported criminal, collected on the streets of Southern California (Study 2). As predicted, parents envisioned a potential antagonist to be more formidable than did non-parents. Significant differences between parents with children and non-parents without children in the threat that the foe was thought to pose (Study 1) were fully mediated by increases in estimated physical formidability.  相似文献

Muscle activity is for decades considered to provide health benefits irrespectively of the muscle activity pattern performed and whether it is during e.g. sports, transportation, or occupational work tasks. Accordingly, the international recommendations for public health-promoting physical activity do not distinguish between occupational and leisure time physical activity. However, in this body of literature, attention has not been paid to the extensive documentation on occupational physical activity imposing a risk of impairment of health – in particular musculoskeletal health in terms of muscle pain. Focusing on muscle activity patterns and musculoskeletal health it is pertinent to elucidate the more specific aspects regarding exposure profiles and body regional pain. Static sustained muscle contraction for prolonged periods often occurs in the neck/shoulder area during occupational tasks and may underlie muscle pain development in spite of rather low relative muscle load. Causal mechanisms include a stereotype recruitment of low threshold motor units (activating type 1 muscle fibers) characterized by a lack of temporal as well as spatial variation in recruitment. In contrast during physical activities at leisure and sport the motor recruitment patterns are more dynamic including regularly relatively high muscle forces – also activating type 2 muscles fibers – as well as periods of full relaxation even of the type 1 muscle fibers. Such activity is unrelated to muscle pain development if adequate recovery is granted. However, delayed muscle soreness may develop following intensive eccentric muscle activity (e.g. down-hill skiing) with peak pain levels in thigh muscles 1–2 days after the exercise bout and a total recovery within 1 week. This acute pain profile is in contrast to the chronic muscle pain profile related to repetitive monotonous work tasks. The painful muscles show adverse functional, morphological, hormonal, as well as metabolic characteristics. Of note is that intensive muscle strength training actually may rehabilitate painful muscles, which has recently been repeatedly proven in randomized controlled trials. With training the maximal muscle activation and strength can be shown to recover, and consequently allow for decreased relative muscle load during occupational repetitive work tasks. Exercise training induces adaptation of metabolic and stress-related mRNA and protein responses in the painful muscles, which is in contrast to the responses evoked during repetitive work tasks per se.  相似文献

Acoustic signals function in intrasexual mating competition in a wide variety of species, including humans. The low voice pitch of human males has been proposed to represent an honest signal of formidability. Although voice pitch in men affects perceptions of size and dominance, it is relatively weakly associated with objective measures of formidability such as body size and strength. As a result, some authors have argued that low male voice pitch is not a valid signal of formidability but is deceptive and salient only because it hijacks a tendency to perceive lower frequency sounds as emanating from larger sources. In this paper, we consider theoretical and empirical issues associated with this perceptual exploitation hypothesis and ask whether male voice pitch transmits information about formidability. We utilize mediation models to investigate whether male voice pitch is an honest signal of formidability in data collected from university students in the U.S. (n = 231 male speakers, 565 male raters) and Canada (n = 74 male speakers, 108 female raters, 65 male raters). In both data sets, male voice pitch mediated the relationship between objective (measured by height) and perceived formidability. Collectively, these results indicate that men’s voice pitch transmits information about formidability from signaler to receiver.  相似文献

Although subjects with recurrent low back pain (LBP) demonstrate altered trunk control, the kinematic and kinetic responses of the trunk have not been carefully investigated. This study was conducted to compare the standing time, spine range of motion (ROM), and dynamic postural steadiness index (DPSI) based on visual condition between subjects with and without recurrent LBP during upright one leg standing. Sixty-three individuals participated in the study, including 34 control subjects and 29 subjects with recurrent LBP. The DPSI was a composite of the medio-lateral (MLSI), anterior-posterior (APSI), and vertical steadiness indices (VSI) on a force platform. The control group demonstrated longer standing time (s) during the eyes-open condition than the LBP group (26.82 ± 6.03 vs. 19.87 ± 9.36; t = 2.96, p = 0.01). Regarding spine ROM, visual condition was significantly different between groups (F = 7.09, p = 0.01) and demonstrated interactions with spine region and group (F = 5.53, p = 0.02). For the kinetic measures, there was a significant interaction between visual conditions and indices (F = 25.30, p = 0.001). In the LBP group, the DPSI was significantly correlated with the MLSI (r = 0.59, p = 0.002), APSI (r = 0.44, p = 0.03), and VSI (r = 0.98, p = 0.01) in the eyes-closed condition. Overall, the results of this study indicated that the LBP group decreased thorax and lumbar spine rotations during the eyes-closed condition. The LBP group also demonstrated positive correlations with the kinetic indices, enhancing dynamic postural steadiness in the eyes-closed condition in order to possibly avoid pain or further injury. This dynamic postural steadiness strategy is necessary to improve kinetic and kinematic chain reactions in the LBP group. This compensatory pattern supports the development of optimal postural correction strategies to prevent LBP recurrence and might represent a chain reaction to protect trunk control without visual input.  相似文献

Biological control of larval mosquitoes is in great demand due to the development of resistance against synthetic insecticides, environmental toxicity and the inability to protect habitats from further oviposition. In the present study, three botanical essential oils (BEOs) – citronella, eucalyptus, and pine oils – were formulated for the assessment of larvicidal and oviposition repellent efficacies against Culex quinquefasciatus Say, the filaria vector. The GC–MS profiling of BEOs showed the presence of 16 – 19 compounds covering 87.7–93% of oil composition. The resistance status of Culex quinquefasciatus population was evaluated with temephos (LC50 = 0.001 ppm, LC90 = 0.01 ppm). Larval bioassay of emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulations prepared from eucalyptus and pine oils showed promising efficacy (LC50 = 22.7 and 23.2 ppm) and LC90 (63.8 and 62.4 ppm) compared to citronella oil EC (LC50 = 43.4 ppm and LC90 = 199.0 ppm). The field trials of eucalyptus + pine (1:1 ratio) EC showed 100% larval mortality for 3 weeks at 300 ppm compared to 2 weeks of individual oils. Further, the oviposition attraction index (OAI) for ECs of eucalyptus, pine, and their combination showed complete protection of breeding habitats from oviposition at 1st week and ?0.9 to ?1.0 OAI at 2nd week with slight reduction to ?0.5 at 3rd week. Citronella EC provided shortest larvicidal and oviposition repellent efficacy under the field conditions. The promising mosquitocidal activities of EC formulations of eucalyptus and pine or their combination suggest them as potential biocontrol vector control candidates over citronella oil.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to measure hamstring muscle eccentric and concentric strength in individuals with and without low back pain (LBP). Two composite scores for the relative balance of eccentric to concentric strength at the different movement velocities were calculated (the DEC and SEC), to determine whether or not self perceived pain, disability, or fear avoidance measures were associated with hamstring strength characteristics.DesignCross-sectional repeated measures design.SettingUniversity laboratory.ParticipantsFifteen individuals with chronic LBP and 15 matched controls.Main outcome measuresIsokinetic eccentric and concentric strength at 30° s?1 and 120° s?1. Composite scores (DEC and SEC) based on peak torque were calculated to evaluate the relationship between the different muscle actions across the test velocities. Self report measures included the Oswestry disability index, general health and well being, fear avoidance, and pain.ResultsEccentric/concentric strength ratio at 30° s?1 was higher for the LBP group (F(1,58) = 4.81, p = 0.032). The SEC was also higher for the LBP (F(1,58) = 5.97, p = 0.018). Fear avoidance beliefs and mental well-being were significantly associated with the SEC only in the LBP group (adjusted r2 = 0.26, (F(2,27) = 5.8, p = .008). For the control group both the DEC and SEC were associated with self report measures. Matched differences between groups’ for the SEC were best explained by fear avoidance beliefs about work (adjusted r2 = 0.12, F(1,28) = 5.1, p = 0.03).ConclusionReduced concentric relative to eccentric strength is best identified by the SEC. The SEC was significantly associated with impaired self report measures of fear avoidance and mental well being in individuals with LBP. Differences between groups for the SEC were best explained by fear avoidance beliefs about work.  相似文献

Naturally occurring groups of muscle myosin behave differently from individual myosins or small groups commonly assayed in vitro. Here, we investigate the emergence of myosin group behavior with increasing myosin group size. Assuming the number of myosin binding sites (N) is proportional to actin length (L) (N = L/35.5 nm), we resolve in vitro motility of actin propelled by skeletal muscle myosin for L = 0.2–3 μm. Three distinct regimes were found: L < 0.3 μm, sliding arrest; 0.3 μm ≤ L ≤ 1 μm, alternation between arrest and continuous sliding; L > 1 μm, continuous sliding. We theoretically investigated the myosin group kinetics with mechanical coupling via actin. We find rapid actin sliding steps driven by power-stroke cascades supported by postpower-stroke myosins, and phases without actin sliding caused by prepower-stroke myosin buildup. The three regimes are explained: N = 8, rare cascades; N = 15, cascade bursts; N = 35, continuous cascading. Two saddle-node bifurcations occur for increasing N (mono → bi → mono-stability), with steady states corresponding to arrest and continuous cascading. The experimentally measured dependence of actin sliding statistics on L and myosin concentration is correctly predicted.  相似文献

This prospective study examined normalized stability differences based on dominance side and visual feedback. Subjects with low back pain (LBP) (n = 26; 9 men, 17 women) and without LBP (n = 28; 11 men, 17 women) participated in this study. All subjects were asked to maintain single leg standing balance with the contralateral hip flexed 90° for 25 s. The outcome measures included normalized holding duration and stability. The combined rotation (Rxyz) was also calculated to compare the upper and lower thorax and lumbar axes relative to the core spine axis. The holding duration was significantly different between groups (T = ?2.21, p = 0.03). The subjects without recurrent LBP (control group) demonstrated longer hold duration times (24.60 ± 4.2 s) than the subjects with recurrent LBP (21.2 ± 7.1 s). For the normalized hold duration, there was a significant difference between groups based on visual input (F = 7.13, p = 0.009). There was also a significant difference in standing stability based on visual input (F = 93.93, p = 0.0001) and trunk area (F = 101.51, p = 0.0001). In addition, the normalized stability was significantly different based on dominance and visual input (F = 11.28, p = 0.002). Therefore, trunk stability could prompt an uncoordinated bracing effect with poor proprioception from injury to passive structures or due to interference of pain during central processing of information in subjects with recurrent LBP.  相似文献

Greater fatigability across lumbar extensors has been reported in persons with chronic low back pain (LBP), however, extensor atrophy tends to be local to the site of pain. Therefore, specific ultrasound guided local and remote intramuscular electromyographic recordings were undertaken during an isometric horizontal trunk hold in two carefully matched cohorts; persons with and without LBP. The test was performed to self-determined maximal hold time, and the control group held the horizontal position longer (P < 0.001). A power spectral analysis was performed to calculate the normalized median frequency (NMF) slope for both the first and last 30 s of the fatigue test due to the group difference in hold times. There were no significant group differences in NMF slope at the first 30 s of testing (P = 0.650). The NMF slope for the first and last 30 s was not different in healthy subjects (P = 0.688), but was different in persons with LBP, illustrated by shallowing of the slope at the last 30 s of the test (P = 0.008). A between muscle comparison in the LBP group showed greater non-linear behavior in the deep multifidus (painful region) in contrast to T10 longissimus thoracis (nonpainful region) (P = 0.013). Possible explanations for these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the associations of spinal kinematics and physical activity (PA) with bodily pain, physical functioning, and work ability among health care workers with low back pain (LBP). Spinal kinematics and PA were measured with a wireless Inertial Measurement Unit system (ValedoMotion®) and a waist-worn tri-axial accelerometer (Hookie AM20), respectively. Their association was assessed in relation to Work Ability Index (WAI), bodily pain and physical functioning (RAND-36) in 210 health care workers with recurrent LBP. Greater lumbar movement variability/less deterministic lumbar movement (in angular velocity) during a “Pick Up a Box” functional task was correlated with higher amounts of step counts (r = -0.29, p = 0.01) and moderate PA (r = -0.24, p = 0.03). A higher amount of PA (p = 0.03) as well as less movement control impairment (p = 0.04) and movement variability (p = 0.03) were associated with greater work ability, whilst greater vigorous PA was the only parameter to explain higher physical functioning (p = 0.02). PA and movement variability were relative to each other to explain bodily pain (p = 0.01). These findings show the importance of considering the interaction between lumbar kinematics and physical activity while planning strategies to improve bodily pain, physical functioning and work ability among health care workers with LBP.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine whether peroneal reaction time is influenced by ankle’s impairment in subjects with ankle injury assessed by surface electromyography. The studies were identified by electronic research by two independent reviewers at the following databases: MEDLINE (1966–2009), EMBASE (1980–2009), LILACS (1982–2009), CINAHL (1982–2009) and, SPORTDiscus (1975–2009). Studies were divided into following groups: I – subjects with injury (paired by the opposite limb); II – subjects with or without injury (paired by limbs from different subjects) and III – subjects with or without injury (other situations). Studies that used the sudden ankle inversion test were selected. As result, 25 articles were included. The comparison of the reaction time paired by the opposite limb, showed a statistically significant difference in favor of the injured ankles (standardized mean difference – SMD = 0.40; IC 95% [0.01; 0.79], P = 0.05). The comparison paired by limbs from different subjects presented a statistically significant difference, in favor of the injured ankles (SMD = 3.49; IC 95% [1.26; 5.71], P = 0.002). The effect size measured was 0.54 and 1.61, respectively. The greater reaction time delay showed in the subjects with ankle injury compared to that of asymptomatic subjects should be taken into consideration.  相似文献

The clinical management of bladder cancer (BCa) is hindered by the lack of reliable biomarkers. We aimed to investigate the potential of lamprey immunity protein (LIP), a lectin that specifically binds to multi-antennary sialylated N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) structures on UMOD glycoproteins in the urine of BCa patients. Primary BCa patients had higher levels of LIP-bound Neu5Gc in urine than healthy participants and patients receiving postoperative treatment did. In addition, lectin chip assay and mass spectrometry were used to analyze the glycan chain structure, which can recognize the UMOD glycoprotein decorated with multi-antennary sialylated Neu5Gc structures. Furthermore, compared with urine samples from healthy patients (N = 2821, T/C = 0.12 ± 0.09) or benign patients (N = 360, T/C = 0.11 ± 0.08), the range of the urine T/C ratio detected using LIP test paper was 1.97 ± 0.32 in patients with bladder cancer (N = 518) with significant difference (P < 0.0001). Our results indicate that LIP may be a tool for early BCa identification, diagnosis, and monitoring. Neu5Gc-modified UMOD glycoproteins in urine and Neu5Gc-modified N-glycochains and sialyltransferases may function as potential markers in clinical trials.  相似文献

Ranunculus weyleri is a narrow endemic protected plant from Majorca Island. It is known from only five populations located in two mountain areas 48 km apart. Using demographic data collected from 2007 to 2010, we assessed the demographic status of two populations – font des Coloms (FC) and talaia Moreia (TM) – using Integral Projection Models (IPMs). We showed that none of the two populations were declining under a deterministic model. Population FC was stable (λ = 1.026, CI95% = 0.965–1.093), while population TM showed sign of demographic expansion (λ = 1.113, CI95% = 1.032–1.219). Plant survival, flowering probability and the mean number of seedlings per floral peduncle were lower in TM, whereas growth and the number of floral peduncles per reproductive plant were lower in FC. Elasticity analyses showed that management strategies increasing plant survival and growth would be the most efficient to increase λ for both populations. Herbivory pressure by goats has been shown to be high in TM, resulting in high predation rate on floral peduncles. Controlling goat pressure may thus represent a promising management option, provided that we can demonstrate a negative impact of herbivory by goats on survival and growth which are the most critical parts of the life cycle in this species. Meanwhile, initiating a long-term monitoring is of crucial importance to get more insights into the relationships between environmental variation, plant performance and population dynamics.  相似文献

In an attempt to develop accessible methods for the precocious individual selection based on phenotypic attributes related to reproductive superiority, this study evaluated the effects of follicular wave stages (emergence and dominance) and the repeatability coefficients of potential fertility predictors (vulvar morphometry, uterine biometry, echogenicity and echotexture, ovarian biometry, and antral follicle count – AFC) in two breeds of purebred prepubertal heifers. Nellore (n = 30) and Caracu (n = 28) heifers were submitted to a sequence of 11 evaluations conducted every 48 h (D0 – random day of the antral follicular wave until D20) to study potential fertility indicators under natural conditions. The data obtained were compared according to breed and follicular wave stage. Statistical analysis included the fixed effects of breed, evaluation day, and their statistical interaction and was performed using MIXED, GENMOD, GLM, and CORR procedures of the SAS program. Breed was found to influence rima height, ovarian area, and AFC, which were greater in Nellore heifers (P < 0.02). The follicular wave stage also influenced most of the potential predictors, highlighting AFC which was higher in the presence of a dominant follicle in both breeds (P < 0.0001). The repeatability coefficients for vulvar width (0.76 and 0.66), ovarian area (0.70 and 0.62), and AFC (0.76 and 0.74) were considered to be high in Nellore and Caracu heifers, respectively. Only ovarian biometry was able to predict AFC (Pearson correlation coefficient ≥ 0.66; P < 0.0001) in prepubertal heifers. The results indicate that most of the phenotypic reproductive parameters analyzed can be characterized throughout prepuberty using a single measure since they are intrinsic attributes of the individual.  相似文献
