The International Standard for Kanamycin

The International Reference Preparation of Kanamycin has been replaced by the International Standard for Kanamycin. The potency of the standard is based upon a collaborative study in ten laboratories in ten countries. Each ampoule of the International Standard of Kanamycin is defined as containing the activity of 10345 International Units of Kanamycin.     

The International Standard for sisomicin

An International Standard for Sisomicin has been established on the basis of a collaborative assay. There were seven participating laboratories in seven countries. The activity of the contents of each ampoule of the International Standard of Sisomicin is defined as 35,200 International Units of Sisomicin.     

The International Standard for Amikacin

An International Standard for Amikacin has been established on the basis of a collaborative assay. Seven laboratories, in seven countries, took part. Each ampoule of the International Standard of Amikacin is defined as containing the activity of 50 600 International Units of Amikacin.

New Constitution for the International Palaeontological Association

At the General Assembly of the International Paleontological Union (I.P.U.), 20th August, 1968 a Policy Committee was formed and charged to formulate an entirely new Constitution; this was adopted 25th August, 1972 by the General Assembly. To conform with regulations of the International Union of Geological Sciences (I.U.G.S.), the new name is International Palaeontological Association (I.P.A.).     

World Health Organization International Standards for highly purified human, porcine and bovine insulins

The 4th International Standard (IS) for Insulin, established in 1958, consists of a mixture of relatively impure bovine and porcine insulins and is not suitable as a standard for the assay of highly purified single-species insulins presently used in the treatment of diabetes. Preparations of human, bovine and porcine crystalline insulins, representative of current highly purified therapeutic insulins, have now been studied in an international collaborative study carried out by twenty-three laboratories in fifteen countries. In the collaborative study described here, each of the three preparations was found to be suitable for use as a standard for insulin for bioassay and each was established by WHO in 1986 as an international standard. The 4th IS of Insulin bovine/porcine (code numbered 58/6) has been discontinued. Insulin preparations should now be calibrated in terms of International Units defined by the standard for the appropriate species: the International Standard for Insulin, Human, the International Standard for Insulin, Bovine, or the International Standard for Insulin, Porcine.     

Unification for the expression of the monophenolase and diphenolase activities of tyrosinase

In order to unify and generalize, we define the International Units used to express the monophenolase and diphenolase activity of mushroom tyrosinase acting on different monophenol/diphenol pairs and establish a quantitative relation. Similarly, the activity units to express tyrosinase activity proposed by suppliers are discussed and compared with the above International Units. Lastly, we study the relation between International Units of diphenolase activity and of monophenolase activity for other biological sources of tyrosinase.     

Introduction to an International Guide to Stratigraphic Classification,Terminology, and Usage

The International Subcommission on Stratigraphic Classification (ISSC), a subcommission of the IUGS Commission on Stratigraphy, has been working for the last 15–20 years towards the preparation of an International Guide to Stratigraphic Classification, Terminology, and Usage. The purpose of the Guide is to promote international agreement on principles of stratigraphic classification and to establish internationally acceptable stratigraphic terminology and rules of stratigraphic procedure. The Introduction explains the background of its preparation.     

Symposium Report: International Symposium on Ciliate Biology,India Habitat Centre,New Delhi,India, 04–06 April 2018

Ciliated protists have attracted wide interest among researchers from the Indian subcontinent in the last few years. An International Symposium on Ciliate Biology (ISCB) 2018 was held on 04–06 April 2018 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India. The symposium represented a synergy with International Research Coordination Network for Biodiversity of Ciliates (IRCN‐BC), an affiliate society of International Society of Protistologists (ISOP). The symposium provided a platform for Indian and International delegates to exchange knowledge, present their latest research findings, and establish collaborations as well as creating a networking opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Nine foreign delegates from 5 countries and 300 Indian delegates actively participated in the event which included 22 oral and 57 poster presentations.

The International Rice Information System. A platform for meta-analysis of rice crop data

Ambiguous germplasm identification; difficulty in tracing pedigree information; and lack of integration between genetic resources, characterization, breeding, evaluation, and utilization data are constraints in developing knowledge-intensive crop improvement programs. To address these constraints, the International Crop Information System (www.icis.cgiar.org), a database system for the management and integration of global information on genetic resources and crop improvement for any crop, was developed by genetic resource specialists, crop scientists, and information technicians associated with the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research and collaborative partners. The International Rice Information System (www.iris.irri.org) is the rice (Oryza species) implementation of the International Crop Information System. New components are now being added to the International Rice Information System to handle the diversity of rice functional genomics data including genomic sequence data, molecular genetic data, expression data, and proteomic information. Users access information in the database through stand-alone programs and Web interfaces, which offer specialized applications and customized views to researchers with different interests.     

The International Stem Cell Banking Initiative (ISCBI): raising standards to bank on

The International Stem Cell Banking Initiative (ISCBI) aims to create a global network of stem cell banks to facilitate best practice in stem cell research and clinical cell delivery, primary objectives of national and local governments worldwide and stem cell organizations such the International Stem Cell Forum and the International Society of Stem Cell Research. This paper is a brief overview of ISCBI, its primary activities, potential network participants, and the challenges for harmonizing stem cell banking on a global level.
