Diel drift samples utilizing nets with mesh size less than 200 microns were taken in Linesville Creek, Pennsylvania, an eastern deciduous forest stream, and Inlet Run, Wyoming, an alpine snow melt stream. Identification of drifting Chironomidae larvae to lowest level taxonomic categories indicated 51 species or species group categories representing 51.95% of the total insect drift in Linesville Creek and 18 species or species group categories representing 70.47% of the total insect drift in Inlet Run. Orthocladiinae were the predominant larvae in the drift in Linesville Creek, with 19 species comprising 43.84% of the Chironomidae drift. In decreasing abundance were Chironomini (12 species, 40.36% of Chironomidae drift), Tanytarsini (10 species, 8.89%), and Tanypodinae (10 species, 6.91%). By contrast, Diamesinae were the predominant larvae in the drift in Inlet Run, (5 species, 71.43%) followed by Orthocladiinae (10 species, 27.25%), Tanytarsini (2 species, 1.20%), and Podonominae (1 species, 0.12%). Comparison of drift composition with substrate samples and/ or emergence data indicated a close relationship between relative abundance in drift and relative abundance in the benthos. Behavioral drift patterns with nocturnal peaks were seen for 3 species or species groups in Linesville Creek. Four species with diurnal drift peaks were present in Inlet Run. Analysis of the size distribution of drifting larvae indicates that a mesh size as small as 200 microns is required to resolve diel drift patterns. It is postulated that random factors greatly influence the apparent diel drift pattern of Chironomidae when nets with mesh size in excess of 400 microns are employed in drift studies. Conflicting literature reports of behavioral drift for Chironomidae may be due to differing species composition of drifting larvae and net mesh size related artifacts.  相似文献

Nested nets of three different mesh apertures were used to study mesh-size effects on drift collected in a small mountain stream. The innermost, middle, and outermost nets had, respectively, 425 µm, 209 µm and 106 µm openings, a design that reduced clogging while partitioning collections into three size groups. The open area of mesh in each net, from largest to smallest mesh opening, was 3.7, 5.7 and 8.0 times the area of the net mouth. Volumes of filtered water were determined with a flowmeter. The results are expressed as (1) drift retained by each net, (2) drift that would have been collected by a single net of given mesh size, and (3) the percentage of total drift (the sum of the catches from all three nets) that passed through the 425 µm and 209 µm nets. During a two day period in August 1986, Chironomidae larvae were dominant numerically in all 209 µm and 106 µm samples and midday 425 µm samples. Large drifters (Ephemerellidae) occurred only in 425 µm or 209 µm nets, but the general pattern was an increase in abundance and number of taxa with decreasing mesh size. Relatively more individuals occurred in the larger mesh nets at night than during the day. The two larger mesh sizes retained 70% of the total sediment/detritus in the drift collections, and this decreased the rate of clogging of the 106 µm net. If an objective of a sampling program is to compare drift density or drift rate between areas or sampling dates, the same mesh size should be used for all sample collection and processing. The mesh aperture used for drift collection should retain all species and life stages of significance in a study. The nested net design enables an investigator to test the adequacy of drift samples.  相似文献

1. Two sampling techniques were used to characterize invertebrate communities in eight, low-order streams along an altitudinal gradient in Costa Rica that represents the last continuous tract of primary forest spanning such extremes in elevation (i.e. near sea level to 2900 m a.s.l.) along the Caribbean Slope of Central America. A standard Surber sampler was used to sample invertebrates on the stream bottom, and drift sampling nets were used to sample invertebrates drifting in the stream flow. 2. Sites were established at 30, 50, 700 1800 and 2700 m a.s.l. In one to two streams per site, six Surber samples were collected, and drift was sampled every 3 h over one 24-h period between April and August 1994. All sites were in primary forest, with the exception of the lowest elevation site (30 m) which was located in banana plantations. 3. Both sampling techniques indicated that Diptera (Chironomidae) and Ephemeroptera were the dominant insect groups at all sites. Disturbed streams draining banana plantations were dominated by Chironomidae and had lower taxon richness and diversity than other sites. 4. While data from benthic samples indicated that insects were the major faunal component (> 90%) at all sites, drift samples were dominated by larval shrimps (> 50%) at the 30 m and 50 m sites. 5. Drift periodicity of invertebrates was observed at those sites characterized by predaceous fishes: nocturnal drift densities were higher than diurnal densities at 30, 50 and 700 m a.s.l., however, no periodicity was observed at 1800 and 2700 m a.s.l. where fish were absent. 6. This study shows the importance of measuring invertebrate drift, in addition to directly sampling the benthos. Drift sampling provided data on a major community component (shrimps) of lowland tropical streams, that would have been overlooked using traditional benthic sampling techniques, and in some cases provided additional information on taxon richness. 7. Based on results of the present study, it is recommended that drift sampling be included as a standard complementary tool to benthic sampling in biological assessments (e.g. bioassessment protocols) of tropical streams, which are often characterized by migratory invertebrate species such as shrimps. Drift samples provide critical information on the presence or absence of shrimps and also on the timing and magnitude of their migration which is an important link between many tropical rivers and their estuaries.  相似文献

200 µm and 50 µm mesh aperture nets were compared with respect to the sampling of the drift of Chironomidae (Diptera) larvae.200 µm mesh drift nets were found to be unsatisfactory for the sampling of chironomid larval drift; such nets seriously underestimated drift density of larvae and distorted the sub-family and instar composition of samples.200 µm mesh drift nets captured larval drift in densities of 1–24 m–3, while pumped samples, filtered through 50 µm mesh aerial nets, indicated densities of 10–1600 m–3. Drift nets also underestimated ephemeropteran drift density. The use of pumps, with 50 µm or smaller mesh aperture aerial nets, is recommended for quantitative and qualitative sampling of chironomid drift, and possibly that of other invertebrates.  相似文献

The diel drift patterns of Chironomidae larvae were investigated in a seventh order section of the Warta River (Central Poland) over two diel cycles during May 1989. Three nets (mesh size 400 m) were installed in a cross section of the Warta River. The estimated drift density was low, but was comparable to that calculated for other large rivers. Spatio-temporal fluctuations in abundance and composition of macroinvertebrate drift, including Chironomidae, were observed with the highest density of drifting macrobenthos recorded near the depositional bank of this river. The ratio benthosdrift indicated differing propensities for of the older instars of a given chironomid taxon to drift. Orthocladiinae larvae were the most abundant subfamily of Chironomidae in drift but not in benthos, reaching up to 73% of the total drifting chironomid larvae. More taxa but fewer individuals (about 20% of the chironomid larvae collected) belonged to the tribe Chironomini, the dominant group in benthos.A major part of chironomid drift collection may represent behavioural drift because the net mesh size used in the Warta River was insufficient to catch the earliest instars (distributional drift). Both at the family and subfamily level chironomid larvae exhibited a distinct nocturnal drift periodicity. Nocturnal periodicity was documented for the dominant species, but due to the low density of many chironomid species, it was impossible to determine their diel drift pattern. Some Chironomidae appeared to be aperiodic.  相似文献

We describe the age-0 brown trout (Salmo trutta) collected from a mountain stream downstream from a reservoir in June, July, and August 1990. Sample sites were 1, 12, and 20 km downstream from the reservoir at elevations of 2840, 2600, and 2230 m above mean sea level. The mean length of fish in the samples increased with downstream progression and from June through August. Zooplankton predominated the diet of fish collected in June from the most upstream sampling site, while Diptera larvae predominated the diet of fish from more downstream sampling sites in June. In July and August, the diet of fish from the upstream site was predominated by Diptera larvae, while the diet of fish from the other two sites was predominated by Ephemeroptera nymphs. Variation in diet among sampling sites and sampling months was related not only to increasing fish sizes over the summer but also to the availability of zooplankton flushed from the reservoir.  相似文献

In this study, we conducted field sampling to assess the relative influences of water and substrate quality on benthic macroinvertebrate communities living in the Jung‐rang stream, Korea. We collected macroinvertebrates and assessed physicochemical variables from three sites in the stream between May 2001 and January 2002. Sites were located approximately within 20 km from the headwater. The structure of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities may be strongly affected by the physical conditions inherent to the environment in which they live. In this stream, we detected profound differences in water temperature (18 ~ 19.75°C), the concentrations of suspended solids (3.935 ~ 7.87 mg/L), and demand for chemical oxygen (10.575 ~ 14.425 mg/L). Nonylphenol concentrations ranging from 0.375 to 0.55 ng/mL were found in the water, and the sediments were measured to contain between 2.45 and 3.425 ng/mL. We identified a total of 20 macroinvertebrate species, including seven species of Chironomidae, the most abundant of which was Chironomus flaviplumus. At none of the sites did we find any significant differences in the structure of the communities. Using canonical correspondence analysis for the relation of species and environmental variables, chemical oxygen demand and suspended sediment gradients (SS) had significant preferences for site 1 with SS. The results of our study suggest that physico‐chemical variables exerted complex effects on the structure of the benthic community in the Jung‐rang stream. This study supports the contention that physico‐chemical analyses as well as community analysis are valuable tools to assess the effect of pollution on the ecological condition of a stream. Chironomids, in particular, showed a high degree of tolerance against contaminants.  相似文献

In order to show how environmental factors could influence the spatial and temporal distribution of epibiosis, we investigated the occurrence of the ciliate Rhabdostyla cf. chironomi (Ciliophora, Peritrichia) attached to Chironomidae larvae in an urban stream in southeast Brazil. Samples were collected monthly for 1-year period at five sampling stations along the stream. Among the 24 genera analyzed, the genus Chironomus was the most abundant, with 16.84% carrying R. cf. chironomi. This epibiotic relationship was only recorded in sample stations located in a heavily populated urban area of the stream. Statistical analyses demonstrated significant correlations between infestation prevalence and environmental parameters such as rainfall, bacterial density, and host abundance. The occurrence of epibionts on the larvae was spatially and temporally heterogeneous. The results are discussed in terms of possible factors related to the heterogeneous spatial and temporal occurrence. Greater understanding of the ecological factors governing the occurrence of the epibiont–host relationship is essential to establish future use of this relationship as water quality indicator in lotic systems.  相似文献

1. Increased fine sediment deposition is a prevalent threat to stream biodiversity and has been shown to impact stream‐breeding salamanders negatively. However, their complex life histories make it difficult to determine which stage is affected. 2. We conducted field experiments from 26 August to 11 September 2010 and 11 October to 11 November 2010 in two southern Appalachian headwater streams (U.S.A.) to examine the response of larval salamanders to increased fine sediment deposition. Fine sediment was increased in artificial stream channels by 0, 33 and 67%. The number of larvae observed at the end of the experiments was used to determine whether larval microhabitat selection was influenced by fine sediment deposition. A concurrent survey of aquatic larvae in three nearby streams complemented this experiment. Stream substratum composition at survey sites was quantified to examine the effects of fine sediment on larval salamander abundance. 3. Increases in fine sediment deposition failed to explain the number of larval salamanders detected in stream channels. Similarly, a negligible effect of fine sediment was observed on abundance estimates. 4. These results suggest that fine sediment deposition has a minimal impact on aquatic salamander larvae. Therefore, the effects of increased fine sediment loads on stream‐breeding salamanders may not be the result of deleterious effects on the aquatic larvae but instead may be the result of effects on other stages. Management efforts that consider these other stages are therefore needed to protect stream‐breeding salamander communities.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Colonization of nutrient-diffusing substrata by periphyton and invertebrates was investigated at forested and open sites in a small, mountain stream and a spring in the South Island of New Zealand.
2. Substrata had colonization surfaces made from 100μm mesh plankton netting that enabled algal assemblages to be removed intact for scanning electron microscopy. They also allowed small volumes of solvent to be used for the extraction of photosynthetic pigments.
3. At all sites, periphyton assemblages were dominated by species of Achnanthes, Cocconeis and Gomphonema , and except in the forest in winter, periphyton biomass was always greater on enriched (N + P added) than control substrata.
4. Invertebrates colonizing diffusion substrata were principally larval Chironomidae (Orthocladiinac). No larvae were present in winter, but in three spring and summer trials mean larval densities were higher on nutrient-enriched than control substrata at all sites.
5. The inclusion of an insecticide Malathion in diffusion substrata, reduced insect colonization at open and forested sites. After 28 days, no concurrent increases in algal pigment concentration were observed on nutrienl-enriched or control substrata at the forested site. However, pigment concentrations were higher on substrata incorporating Malathion at the open site suggesting that algal standing crop was depressed by the activities of grazers.  相似文献

This study describes the structure of the Chironomidae community associated with bryophytes in a first-order stream located in a biological reserve of the Atlantic Forest, during two seasons. Samples of bryophytes adhered to rocks along a 100-m stretch of the stream were removed with a metal blade, and 200-mL pots were filled with the samples. The numerical density (individuals per gram of dry weight), Shannon’s diversity index, Pielou’s evenness index, the dominance index (DI), and estimated richness were calculated for each collection period (dry and rainy). Linear regression analysis was employed to test the existence of a correlation between rainfall and the individual’s density and richness. The high numerical density and richness of Chironomidae taxa observed are probably related to the peculiar conditions of the bryophyte habitat. The retention of larvae during periods of higher rainfall contributed to the high density and richness of Chironomidae larvae. The rarefaction analysis showed higher richness in the rainy season related to the greater retention of food particles. The data from this study show that bryophytes provide stable habitats for the colonization by and refuge of Chironomidae larvae, mainly under conductions of faster water flow and higher precipitation.  相似文献

Studies were conducted between May and June, 2006 to investigate the environmental factors affecting the distribution of An. arabiensis Patton and Culex quinquefasciatus Say in Mwea, Kenya. The sampling unit comprised all non-paddy aquatic habitats and ten randomly selected paddies and canals located within a 200 m radius from the periphery of the study site. Thirteen physico-chemical variables were recorded for each sampling site in each sampling occasion and a sample of mosquito larvae and other aquatic invertebrates collected. The non-paddy aquatic habitats identified included pools and marshes. Morphological identification of 1,974 mosquito larvae yielded four species dominated by Cx. quinquefasciatus (73.2%) and An. arabiensis (25.0%). Pools were associated with significantly higher Cx. quinquefasciatus larval abundance and less diversity of other aquatic invertebrates compared with other habitat types. In contrast, the abundance of An. arabiensis did not differ significantly among habitat types. Culex quinquefasciatus habitats had higher water conductivity and exhibited a higher abundance of other aquatic invertebrates than An. arabiensis habitats. Chi-square analysis indicated that the two species were more likely to coexist in the same habitats than would be expected by chance alone. Anopheles arabiensis larvae were positively associated with dissolved oxygen and adults of family Haliplidae and negatively associated with emergent vegetation and Heptageniidae larvae. Culex quinquefasciatus larvae were positively associated with dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, Chironomidae larvae, and Microvelidae adults and negatively associated with emergent vegetation. These findings suggest that both biotic and abiotic factors play a significant role in niche partitioning among Cx. quinquefasciatus and An. arabiensis, a factor that should be considered when designing an integrated vector control program.  相似文献

The chironomid larvae of a small chalk stream in Berkshire, England   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. 1. The longitudinal distributions of larval Chironomidae (Diptera) were examined for 1 year in the intermittent and perennial sections of the Winterbourne, a small chalk stream in Berkshire, England.
2. Forty-nine chironomid taxa were recorded at ten major sites which were sampled on six occasions and four additional taxa were recorded at sites sampled only once.
3. Cluster analyses using data from the major sampling sites identified three groups of sites. A pond in the stream channel which had a distinct chironomid fauna was distinguished from all other sites before the remaining intermittent sites were separated from all perennial sites on the basis of the chironomid fauna.
4. In the perennial stream, a site heavily shaded by trees had low species richness compared with partially and unshaded sites further downstream. The lowest site, which was near to the confluence with a larger chalk stream, the River Lambourn, had the highest number of taxa (thirty-five), including several which were frequent in the Lambourn.
5. By recording the occurrence of prepupae, an indication of emergence periods was obtained and many taxa were shown to have extended periods of emergence.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of in-stream gravel extraction in a pre-alpine gravel-bed river on hyporheic invertebrate community, together with changes in the hyporheic geomorphology, physico-chemistry and biofilm activity. Hyporheic invertebrates were collected, together with environmental data, on seven sampling occasions from June 2004 to May 2005, at two river reaches—at the site of in-stream gravel extraction and at a site 2.5 km upstream. The hyporheic samples were taken from the river bed and from the gravel bars extending laterally from the stream channel. The invertebrate community was dominated by insect larvae (occasional hyporheos), followed by meiofauna (permanent hyporheos). Stygobionts were present at low species richness and in low densities. Gravel extraction from the stream channel led to changes in the patterns of water exchange between surface and subsurface and changes in the sediment composition at the site. Immediate reductions in density and taxonomic richness of invertebrates were observed, together with changes in their community composition. The hyporheic invertebrate community in the river recovered relatively fast (in 2.5 months) by means of density and taxonomic richness, while by means of community composition invertebrates needed 5–7 months to recover. The impact of fine sediments (<0.1 mm) on biofilm activity measured through ETS activity and hyporheic invertebrate density and taxonomic richness was strongly confirmed in this study.  相似文献

A prevalence study was conducted to survey tick larvae populations in Puerto Rico (PR), compare the number of infested sites with Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus larvae between the wet and dry season, and assess the associations of ecologic factors on the presence of R. microplus larvae. Ninety-six sites were selected using a GIS-based sampling method. Each site was sampled twice; the first sampling was performed during the dry season (March 4-18, 2007) and the second sampling during the wet season (August 13-26, 2007). Sites were sampled using a tick drag with a 1-m(2) white flannel cloth along a 50-m straight course. Only 2 tick species were identified. In the dry season, 15 sites (0.16, 95?% CI?=?0.09-0.24) were identified with R. microplus larvae (n?=?606) and 9 sites (0.09, 95?% CI?=?0.04-0.17) with Dermacentor (Anocentor) nitens larvae (n?=?779), whereas in the wet season 5 sites (0.05, 95?% CI?=?0.02-0.12) were identified with R. microplus (n?=?94), and 5 sites (0.05?%, 95?% CI = 0.02-0.12) with D. nitens (n?=?275). Difference in the number of infested sites with R. microplus was significant (P =?0.031) between the 2 seasons. Factors associated with the presence of R. microplus larvae in PR were wind speed of >4.0?km/h (OR?=?0.07, 95?% CI?=?0.01-0.63), more than 25?% bushes and shrubs on the site (OR?=?11, 95?% CI?=?1.6-71), and presence of cattle on the site (OR?=?26, 95?% CI?=?3.4-188).  相似文献

The distribution of the blackfly larval taxocenoses of different altitudes in the Itatiaia National Park (located in the southeast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil 44 degrees 34' - 44 degrees 42' W, 22 degrees 16' - 22 degrees 28' S) was investigated on four campaigns, one in each season of 2003. On each campaign 60 samples were collected, using 30 x 30 cm wooden quadrats, distributed at four sites: Taquaral, Véu da Noiva, Três Picos and Brejo da Lapa. The winter and spring campaigns included two additional sampling sites: Alsene and Agulhas Negras. A total of 3578 larvae and 292 pupae were sampled, representative of six species: Simulium clavibranchium Lutz, S. subnigrum Lutz, S. rappae Py-Daniel, S. incrustatum Lutz, S. stellatum Gil-Azevedo, Figueiró & Maia-Herzog and Lutzsimulium pernigrum Lutz 1910. The highest larvae abundance and diversity were reported at the intermediate altitude site, Brejo da Lapa. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) revealed that L. pernigrum, S. stellatum and S. incrustatum were associated with the smaller breeding sites, the first two species being associated with sunny sites, while S. incrustatum occurred in sites with little sunlight.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal dynamics of Chironomidae larvae assemblages in a subtropical mountain river basin of northwestern Argentina. We hypothesized that they would respond to (1) environmental changes along the altitudinal gradient in the Yungas forests; (2) environmental changes caused by spates (e.g., increased discharge or sediment transportation). We sampled five sites along an altitudinal gradient of ca. 1,500 m (from 680 to 2,170 m) during low-water and high-water period for 2 years. The Chironomidae larvae assemblages varied along the altitudinal gradient and between sampling periods based on an indicator species analyses and an ordination analyses (NMDS). The best indicator for high altitude sites was “Genus X” followed by Onconeura sp.2, “Genus 9”, “Genus 10”, and Rheotanytarsus sp.2; while Rheotanytarsus lamellatus, Oliveiriella sanjavieri, and Thienemanniella sp. were good indicators for low altitude sites. O. sanjavieri and R. lamellatus were the best indicators for high-water period. The most relevant environmental variables influencing their spatial and temporal distribution were altitude, water temperature, conductivity, and pH. This study is the first to analyze and describe in detail the spatial and temporal distribution of Chironomidae larvae assemblages in northwestern Argentina, and most of the taxa reported here are new records for the region.  相似文献

Winter diet composition of brown trout Salmo trutta was quantified from November to March in 35 temperate groundwater‐dominated streams in south‐eastern Minnesota, U.S.A., in relation to stream physical characteristics including drainage area, channel slope and influence of groundwater on stream thermal regime. Aquatic invertebrates made up the majority of S. trutta diet in all streams and sampling periods and individual S. trutta typically had consumed 30 or more prey items at each sampling event. Differences in diet composition were greater among streams than between sampling periods within a stream, with Gammarus spp., Brachycentrus spp., Glossosoma spp., Chironomidae and Physella spp. the most common taxa. Landscape‐scale stream characteristics were not significantly associated with S. trutta consumption or diet composition. Winter was period of significant activity in groundwater‐dominated streams, as S. trutta fed on a variety of aquatic prey taxa highlighting the importance of winter base‐flow in moderating S. trutta populations in seasonally cold catchments.  相似文献

The effects of the intermittency of water flow on habitat structure and substrate composition have been reported to create a patch dynamics for the aquatic fauna, mostly for that associated with the substrate. This study aims to describe the spatial distribution of Chironomidae in an intermittent river of semiarid Brazil and to associate assemblage composition with environmental variables. Benthic invertebrates were sampled during the wet and dry seasons using a D-shaped net (40?cm wide and 250???m mesh), and the Chironomidae were identified to genus level. The most abundant genera were Tanytarsus, Polypedilum, and Saetheria with important contributions of the genera Procladius, Aedokritus, and Dicrotendipes. Richness and density were not significantly different between the study sites, and multiple regression showed that the variation in richness and density explained by the environmental variables was significant only for substrate composition. The composition of genera showed significant spatial segregation across the study sites. Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed significant correspondence between Chironomidae composition and the environmental variables, with submerged vegetation, elevation, and leaf litter being important predictors of the Chironomidae fauna. This study showed that Chironomidae presented important spatial variation along the river and that this variation was substantially explained by environmental variables associated with the habitat structure and river hierarchy. We suggest that the observed spatial segregation in the fauna results in the high diversity of this group of organisms in intermittent streams.  相似文献
