The septomaxilla is a paired intramembranous ossification in the external nares that occurs in Lepidosauria among Recent Sauropsida and is purported to be present in Monotremata and Dasypodidae (armadillos) among Recent Mammalia. A review of neontological and palaeontological evidence regarding this element in mammals supports the following conclusions: (1) monotremes have a true septomaxilla resembling that known for non-mammalian therapsids and some Mesozoic mammals; (2) the element in dasypodids is a neomorph; it neither resembles the septomaxilla of other synapsids nor does it exhibit the same relationship to the developing nasal-floor cartilage as the septomaxilla of lepidosaurs and monotremes; (3) a septomaxilla is lacking in all Recent therians, and there is no evidence that this bone is fused to the premaxilla in Recent therians, as has been suggested by previous authors.  相似文献

Monotremes have traditionally been considered a remnant group of mammals descended from archaic Mesozoic stock, surviving to the present day on the relatively isolated Australian continent. Challenges to this orthodoxy have been spurred by discoveries of 'advanced' Cretaceous monotremes (Steropodon galmani, Archer, M., et al., 1985. First Mesozoic mammal from Australia-an Early Cretaceous monotreme, Nature. 318, 363-366) as well as by results from molecular data linking monotremes to therian mammals (specifically to marsupials in some studies). This paper reviews the monotreme fossil record and briefly discusses significant new information from additional Cretaceous Australian material. Mesozoic monotremes (including S. galmani) were a diverse group as evidenced by new material from the Early Cretaceous of New South Wales and Victoria currently under study. Although most of these new finds are edentulous jaws (limiting dental comparisons and determination of dietary niches), a range of sizes and forms has been determined. Some of these Cretaceous jaws exhibit archaic features-in particular evidence for the presence of a splenial bone in S. galmani-not seen in therian mammals or in post-Mesozoic (Tertiary and Quaternary) monotreme taxa. Tertiary monotremes were either archaic ornithorhynchids (toothed platypuses in the genera Monotrematum and Obdurodon) or tachyglossids (large echidnas in the genera Megalibgwilia and Zaglossus). Quaternary ornithorhynchid material is referable to the sole living platypus species Ornithorhynchus anatinus. Quaternary echidnas, however, were moderately diverse and several forms are known (Megalibgwilia species; 'Zaglossus' hacketti; Zaglossus species and Tachyglossus aculeatus).  相似文献

Marsupials are born in an immature state, followed by prolonged nurturing of pouch young by maternal lactation. Spinal cord sections held in the collections at the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin were used to test the relationship between structural maturity of the spinal cord and the locomotor challenges that face young marsupials and monotremes. Analysis of variance indicated that body length is a much stronger determinant of variation in anatomical measures of spinal cord maturation than mammal type.  相似文献

Comparing the magnitude of the current biodiversity crisis with those in the fossil record is difficult without an understanding of differential preservation. Integrating data from palaeontological databases with information on IUCN status, ecology and life history characteristics of contemporary mammals, we demonstrate that only a small and biased fraction of threatened species (< 9%) have a fossil record, compared with 20% of non‐threatened species. We find strong taphonomic biases related to body size and geographic range. Modern species with a fossil record tend to be large and widespread and were described in the 19th century. The expected magnitude of the current extinction based only on species with a fossil record is about half of that of one based on all modern species; values for genera are similar. The record of ancient extinctions may be similarly biased, with many species having originated and gone extinct without leaving a tangible record.  相似文献

The study of fossilized ontogenies in mammals is mostly restricted to postnatal and late stages of growth, but nevertheless can deliver great insights into life history and evolutionary mechanisms affecting all aspects of development. Fossils provide evidence of developmental plasticity determined by ecological factors, as when allometric relations are modified in species which invaded a new space with a very different selection regime. This is the case of dwarfing and gigantism evolution in islands. Skeletochronological studies are restricted to the examination of growth marks mostly in the cement and dentine of teeth and can provide absolute age estimates. These, together with dental replacement data considered in a phylogenetic context, provide life-history information such as maturation time and longevity. Palaeohistology and dental replacement data document the more or less gradual but also convergent evolution of mammalian growth features during early synapsid evolution. Adult phenotypes of extinct mammals can inform developmental processes by showing a combination of features or levels of integration unrecorded in living species. Some adult features such as vertebral number, easily recorded in fossils, provide indirect information about somitogenesis and hox-gene expression boundaries. Developmental palaeontology is relevant for the discourse of ecological developmental biology, an area of research where features of growth and variation are fundamental and accessible among fossil mammals.  相似文献

Recent palaeontological data and novel physiological hypotheses now allow a timescaled reconstruction of the evolution of endothermy in birds and mammals. A three‐phase iterative model describing how endothermy evolved from Permian ectothermic ancestors is presented. In Phase One I propose that the elevation of endothermy – increased metabolism and body temperature (Tb) – complemented large‐body‐size homeothermy during the Permian and Triassic in response to the fitness benefits of enhanced embryo development (parental care) and the activity demands of conquering dry land. I propose that Phase Two commenced in the Late Triassic and Jurassic and was marked by extreme body‐size miniaturization, the evolution of enhanced body insulation (fur and feathers), increased brain size, thermoregulatory control, and increased ecomorphological diversity. I suggest that Phase Three occurred during the Cretaceous and Cenozoic and involved endothermic pulses associated with the evolution of muscle‐powered flapping flight in birds, terrestrial cursoriality in mammals, and climate adaptation in response to Late Cenozoic cooling in both birds and mammals. Although the triphasic model argues for an iterative evolution of endothermy in pulses throughout the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, it is also argued that endothermy was potentially abandoned at any time that a bird or mammal did not rely upon its thermal benefits for parental care or breeding success. The abandonment would have taken the form of either hibernation or daily torpor as observed in extant endotherms. Thus torpor and hibernation are argued to be as ancient as the origins of endothermy itself, a plesiomorphic characteristic observed today in many small birds and mammals.  相似文献

Research on drilling predation, one of the most studied biological interactions in the fossil record, has been concentrated on prey with calcareous skeletons (e.g. molluscs, echinoids, rhynchonelliform brachiopods). Based on a compilation of literature sources and surveys of paleontological collections of the Florida Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of Natural History, we provide a tentative evaluation of the post‐Palaeozoic history of drilling predation on the organophosphatic brachiopods of the family Lingulidae. Despite temporal, geographical and methodological limitations of the data assembled here, the results indicate that lingulide brachiopods have been subject to drilling predation since at least the Eocene. Variation in drilling frequencies at the locality level suggests that lingulides may occasionally experience somewhat elevated predation pressures from drilling organisms. Overall, however, drilling predation on lingulide brachiopods has been infrequent in the Cenozoic and may have been absent in the Mesozoic. The Mesozoic‐to‐Cenozoic increase in drilling frequencies on lingulides is similar to the trends observed in other marine benthic invertebrates and consistent with the hypothesis that predation pressures increased through time in marine ecosystems.  相似文献

The mammalian order Xenarthra (armadillos, anteaters and sloths) is one of the four major clades of placentals, but it remains poorly studied from the molecular phylogenetics perspective. We present here a study encompassing most of the order's diversity in order to establish xenarthrans' intra-ordinal relationships, discuss the evolution of their morphological characters, search for their extant sister group and specify the timing of their radiation with special emphasis on the status of the controversial fossil Eurotamandua. Sequences of three genes (nuclear exon 28 of the Von Willebrand factor and mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNAs) are compared for eight of the 13 living genera. Phylogenetic analyses confirm the order's monophyly and that of its three major lineages: armadillos (Cingulata), anteaters (Vermilingua) and sloths ('Tardigrada', renamed in 'Folivora'), and our results strongly support the grouping of hairy xenarthrans (anteaters and sloths) into Pilosa. Within placentals, Afrotheria might be the first lineage to branch off, followed by Xenarthra. The morphological adaptative convergence between New World xenarthrans and Old World pangolins is confirmed. Molecular datings place the early emergence of armadillos around the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary, followed by the divergence between anteaters and sloths in the Early Eocene era. These Tertiary dates contradict the concept of a very ancient origin of modern xenarthran lineages. They also question the placement of the purported fossil anteater (Eurotamandua) from the Middle Eocene period of Europe with the Vermilingua and instead suggest the independent and convergent evolution of this enigmatic taxon.  相似文献

New sociological techniques in the history of science are described. Their value is illustrated by reinterpreting the diagnostic disputes which occurred following the first discovery of the Stonesfield mammals. It is concluded that contextual explanations are more sympathetic to early savants and more conducive to the integration of science and social history.  相似文献

A comparison of fossil ( Echitwlampas sp. from the Lower Miocene Zogelsdorf Formation, Austria) and Recent ( Schizaster canaliferus from the northern Adriatic Sea) irregular sea-urchin tests shows that, upon their death, burrowing echinoids can serve as a substrate for a dense epigrowth. Size, shape, stable orientation, and surface residence-time were identified as key factors governing encrustation. The encrusters on fossil Echinolampas were bryozoans, serpulid polychaetes, barnacles, and coralline algae, while the recent material was initially encrusted by serpulids and hydrozoan colonies, and ultimately covered by the full range of sessile, hemi-sessile, and vagile species characterizing the benthic community in the Adriatic. In Echinolampas , epigrowth was more abundant on the lower (oral) surface; this specific distribution was echoed in S. canaliferus , where epigrowth started on the bottom side and grew upward. This indicates that the tests have a stable orientation and a surface residence-time long enough to allow intense encrustation. A taphonomic model is developed, and the role of encrustation on such special substrates for overall community structure is discussed. The Recent/fossil comparison provides new insights for both fields of study: the recent material indicates the role of soft-bodied faunas as well as the complexity of small-scaled ecological processes; the fossil material reflects many of the above phenomena and adds important taphonomic details on the fate of encrusted biogenic structures and on encruster growth patterns and distributions.  相似文献

Pterosaurs, a Mesozoic group of flying archosaurs, have become a focal point for debates pertaining to the impact of sampling biases on our reading of the fossil record, as well as the utility of sampling proxies in palaeo‐diversity reconstructions. The completeness of the pterosaur fossil specimens themselves potentially provides additional information that is not captured in existing sampling proxies, and might shed new light on the group's evolutionary history. Here we assess the quality of the pterosaur fossil record via a character completeness metric based on the number of phylogenetic characters that can be scored for all known skeletons of 172 valid species, with averaged completeness values calculated for each geological stage. The fossil record of pterosaurs is observed to be strongly influenced by the occurrence and distribution of Lagerstätten. Peaks in completeness correlate with Lagerstätten deposits, and a recovered correlation between completeness and observed diversity is rendered non‐significant when Lagerstätten species are excluded. Intervals previously regarded as potential extinction events are shown to lack Lagerstätten and exhibit low completeness values: as such, the apparent low diversity in these intervals might be at least partly the result of poor fossil record quality. A positive correlation between temporal patterns in completeness of Cretaceous pterosaurs and birds further demonstrates the prominent role that Lagerstätten deposits have on the preservation of smaller bodied organisms, contrasting with a lack of correlation with the completeness of large‐bodied sauropodomorphs. However, we unexpectedly find a strong correlation between sauropodomorph and pterosaur completeness within the Triassic–Jurassic, but not the Cretaceous, potentially relating to a shared shift in environmental preference and thus preservation style through time. This study highlights the importance of understanding the relationship between various taphonomic controls when correcting for sampling bias, and provides additional evidence for the prominent role of sampling on observed patterns in pterosaur macroevolution.  相似文献

Two species of fossil gibbon existed in China during the Pleistocene. These wereHylobates concolor andH. hoolock, species still extant in China today. The gibbon's dependence on high canopy forest environments is well known, therefore their presence in the fossil record is reliable environmental indicator. Gibbons were widely distributed throughout southern China during the Pleistocene; however, the southward shift of the northern limit distribution in modern history.  相似文献

With more than 50 extant turtle species, Southeast Asia is currently a hotspot of turtle biodiversity. However, the distribution areas of most species are decreasing as a consequence of human activities. The causes of this decline are multiple: habitat and natural resources destruction, introduction of invasive species, hunting, etc. Historical data are however still lacking for a detailed understanding of that regional trend as well as for forecasting its evolution in the future. Indeed, while oral testimonies and text data can provide a rather good appreciation of the decline of biodiversity over the last few decades; nothing is known about the dynamic of turtle biodiversity over the Holocene. This lack of data is especially damaging in area where human activities are interacting for a long time with the wild fauna, as the central plain of Thailand, which is now dominated by agricultural landscape. In order to solve these issues, we investigated five Holocene localities in Thai central plain which provided assemblages of turtle remains ranging from Neolithic to Dvaravati periods (4000 to 1000 BP). The studied archaeological assemblages showed a very high species richness. Species such as Malayemys macrocephala, Cuora amboinensis, Heosemys annandalii, Heosemys grandis, Siebenrockiella crassicolis, Amyda ornata were among the most abundant. We also found several plates and a cranial material belonging to a species of the genus Batagur and tortoise remains including Indotestudo elongata and a few plates belonging to the genus Geochelone. The Batagur and Geochelone genera are absent from living turtle assemblages in the central plain but are present in Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia or Southern Thailand for Batagur and far in the West for Geochelone (Myanmar) respectively. Batagur is usually found in coastal areas and its disappearance from central plain is interpreted as resulting from the destruction of a fragile habitat and possibly from the rapid geomorphological evolution of the Chao-Phraya deltaic plain, the disappearance of tortoises could result from deforestation. Cutting traces showed that most turtles were used as food resources at these times, suggesting that turtle hunting was a common practise. Furthermore, occurrence of holes in the margin of the carapace of specimens from Kheed Khin (Saraburi Province) and Promthin Tai (Lopburi Province) suggests that turtles were sometimes kept captive alive or transported. This study shows that investigation of recent fossil localities allows for a better understanding of the role of past human populations in the alteration of the biodiversity through time, and for a more accurate estimation of the rates of species extinction.  相似文献

A survey of recent and fossil zona-aperturate pollen grains within the angiosperms was undertaken. Zona-aperturate pollen (with complete ring-like apertures) has been evolved independently in several genera of basal angiosperm families (Nymphaeaceae, Eupomatiaceae, Annonaceae, Monimiaceae, Atherospermataceae) and monocots (Araceae, Iridaceae, Laxmanniaceae, Arecaceae, and Rapateaceae). The special case of the eudicot Limnanthes (Limnanthaceae) is discussed. New examples of recent and fossil fully zonate pollen are presented; a noteworthy new example are Scrophulariaceae, with Pedicularis; our fossil examples show affinities either to Nymphaeaceae, or Araceae, or Iridaceae, or cannot be related to an extant taxon. The zona-aperturate pollen grains differ in ornamentation and stratification mostly in the respect of the aperture areas, but sometimes also outside the aperture. The question of polarity is settled only for some taxa because of the frequent lack of tetrad observations. A ring-like aperture may divide the pollen grains in symmetric halves, or if running asymmetrically, divides the pollen grain in two more or less unequal halves; the presence of clearly unequal halves gives a strong argument to assume an equatorial ring in such cases where tetrad configurations were not available. The zona-aperturate condition may be a functional benefit in wet environments: while in dry pollen the apertural ring is completely closed, in wet or very moist realm it expands greatly, and the pollen tube can be formed quickly and everywhere in this area.  相似文献

A review of the current fossil evidence of Lepidoptera in the Mesozoic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The problems associated with the identification of lepidopterous fossils (Insecta) are discussed. The origins and evolution of scales in the Amphiesmenoptera (Lepidoptera + Trichoptera) is considered. An illustrated review of the 19 Mesozoic insects described as lepidopterous is given and their identity discussed. Ample evidence of diversity of Lepidoptera in the Cretaceous, evidence (two specimens) of their presence in the Jurassic and some evidence of their presence in the Triassic is given.  相似文献

The postcranium of the Late Jurassic docodont Haldanodon exspectatus Kühne & Krusat, 1972 is represented by a partial skeleton and isolated bones of other individuals from the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) of the Guimarota coal mine in Portugal. Haldanodon exhibits adaptations for a fossorial lifestyle such as stout and short limb bones and humeri with greatly expanded distal joints and strong deltopectoral crests. Short first and second phalanges and moderately curved and laterally compressed terminal phalanges with lateral grooves suggest that Haldanodon was a scratch-digger. The dorso-ventrally elongated, triangular scapula has a convex transverse profile with strongly laterally reflected anterior and posterior scapula margins, enclosing a deep trough-like 'infraspinous fossa'. A supraspinous fossa is not developed. The saddle-shaped glenoid facet is mainly formed by the coracoid and orientated antero-ventrally indicating a sprawling gait. No epiphyses were detected and the wide size range of humerus and femur possibly indicate a lifelong growth. Haldanodon is more derived than Morganucodon by complete reduction of the procoracoid, absence of the procoracoid foramen, and a peg-like coracoid. It shares with monotremes a postscapular fossa that is absent in Morganucodon . A PAUP analysis based on 280 cranio-dental and postcranial characters corroborated the position of Haldanodon above morganucodontids and below Hadrocodium .  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 145 , 219–248.  相似文献

A cladistic analysis that includes representatives of all recent genera of mysticetes and several fossil species that were previously referred to the family Cetotheriidae, with tooth-bearing mysticetes and an archaeocete as an outgroup, is presented here. The result of this analysis forms the base of a revised classification of Mysticeti. Cetotheriidae is redefined as a monophyletic family, which includes the genera Cetotherium , Piscobalaena , and a new subfamily Herpetocetinae, including Herpetocetus , Nannocetus , Metopocetus , and Cephalotropis . Eschrichtiidae is the closest sister taxon to Cetotheriidae. A few species are referred to Eomysticetoidea, whereas the remaining species that were previously referred to Cetotheriidae appear in four clades that branch off from the lineage leading to Balaenopteridae. These are a Mauicetus clade and three clades that are named as new families Aglaocetidae, Pelocetidae, and Diorocetidae.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 150 , 875–894.  相似文献

A detailed comparison of the vegetative and reproductive structures in Laurus nobilis and L. azorica is presented. Most of the characters used by authors to differentiate the two species show a marked degree of overlap. The only characters for which absolute differences could be demonstrated were the leaf tomentum and chromosome number. The fossil record is discussed. None of the taxa referred to Laurus can be accepted as representatives of the genus. However, an examination made of leaf-remains known as Laurophyllum abchasicum established that these belong to the genus Laurus.  相似文献
