Illus. 1959.—The effect of high temperatures during periods of relatively short duration (3-4 days) at various stages following anthesis at the first bloom node was studied in relation to yield of peas at this node. Except for the periods of differential temperature treatments, the plants were maintained in a standard environment room (24°C., light, 12 hr.; 15°C., darkness, 12 hr.). Three different temperature regimes during the treatment periods were studied: high day temperature—standard night temperature (32°—15°C.) ; standard day temperature—high night temperature (24°—30°C.) ; and high day and night temperatures combined (32°—30°C.). The data reveal the existence of a relatively well-defined thermal-sensitive period, with maximal sensitivity to high day temperatures occurring at about 9-11 days from full bloom, and maximal sensitivity to high night temperatures occurring about 6-9 days from full bloom. High night temperatures proved more critical, resulting in a maximal reduction of 25% in yield, as opposed to about 8% for high day temperatures. The effect of high day and night temperatures combined tended to be roughly additive.  相似文献

The functional response of single Coenosia attenuta Stein (Diptera: Muscidae) adult females to Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) adults has been investigated at different but constant temperatures and prey densities. The experiments were conducted in cages over a wide range of temperatures between 12 and 42 degrees C. At each experimental temperature, the number of attacks increases with increasing prey density up to a maximum attack rate referred to as demand rate. A ratio-dependent and demand-driven functional response model was appropriate to describe the attack rate at different temperatures. Both the demand and the search rate linearly increased with increasing temperatures throughout the range. Based on these results, a temperature- and prey density-dependent bidimensional attack rate model was developed and parameterized. The resulting response surface shows that C. attenuata is active over a wide range of temperatures (from approximately 12 to 36 degrees C) and attacks occur up to 42 degrees C. Thus, C. attenuata may be a promising biological control agent in Mediterranean greenhouses. To support this conclusion, further studies including the evaluation of spatial scale effects on the search rate and the consideration of the economically relevant whitefly prey are recommended.  相似文献

Phomopsis sclerotioides was proved to be a primary parasite attacking cucumber roots. Black pseudosclerotial and pseudostromatal lesions occurred more commonly at temperatures of c. 20 oC but at 10 oC unspecific light brown lesions predominated. Damage done by P. sclerotioides was minimal at soil temperatures of c. 20 oC, the aerial dry weights of parasitized plants, as percentages of those of the healthy controls, changing from c. 15% to c. 95% as soil temperatures increased from 12 to 20 oC. Root lesions were associated with root loss and decreased shoot growth. Severe attacks on young plants resulted in stunted growth and small, intensely green leaves. With less severe or later attacks, growth was initially indistinguishable from that of plants growing in uninfested soils until the rate of leaf senescence suddenly increased; these foliar symptoms temporarily simulated attack by vascular wilt fungi. Both sets of foliar symptoms were associated with appreciable yield losses.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) mycelia persist in soil over winter. Functioning of the AM symbiosis very early in the spring when the soil temperature is low may be of ecological significance for perennial and biannual plants in cool climates. An indoor experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of low root-zone temperatures on 32P uptake by 10-week-old leek plants (Allium porrum L.) inoculated or not with the AM fungus Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith. Plants were grown in a greenhouse at approximately 23 degrees C prior to exposing their roots to 23 degrees C, 15 degrees C or 0 degree C. Mycorrhizal colonization increased 32P activity of leek leaves at a root-zone temperature of 23 degrees C seven days after injection of 32P into the soil, whereas 14 days after injection, 32P increases were measured at both 23 degrees C and 15 degrees C. The lack of difference in 32P activity between AM and non-AM plants at 0 degree C, both 7 and 14 days after injection, suggests that the AM fungus is not functional at this low root-zone temperature.  相似文献

Wilt of dolichos bean ( Dolichos lablab ) in the Sudan Gezira appeared to be due primarily to cockchafer grubs ( Schizonycha sp.) in the soil attacking the hypocotyls or roots of plants up to about 6 weeks after sowing. Many wilted plants also showed symptoms of ashy stem blight ( Macrophomina phaseoli ), but in these the fungus was probably a secondary invader rotting roots weakened or damaged by unfavourable soil conditions or insects. Wilt was often severe in dolichos sown on land cropped to sorghum ( Sorghum vulgare ) in the preceding season, sorghum roots in the soil harbouring the grubs. Under moderate grub attack seed dressings containing organomercurial and γ-benzene hexachloride (BHC) gave satisfactory-protection at 0.089%γ-BHC/seed but were inadequate when wilt was severe. Dieldrin and aldrin at 0.044 or 0.089%/seed gave excellent protection in all experiments, but their performance under exceptionally severe wilt conditions has yet to be tested, as also the relative efficiencies of seed treatment and soil treatment under such conditions. Fungicide-insecticide seed treatment also reduced preemergence rotting of germinating seeds due to grub attack.
Wilt rarely occurred in dolichos planted on land fallow in the preceding season, but, even in the apparent absence of wilt, seed treatment often appreciably improved emergence, plant populations, growth and yields. These effects possibly resulted from control of root damage by soil insects, such damage reducing growth and yields but not sufficiently severely to cause wilting. Pending further investigation a powder seed dressing containing organomercurial plus 20% dieldrin, and applied at 1:450 by weight to seed (about 5–6 g./acre of dieldrin), is recommended for dolichos bean in the Gezira.  相似文献

Illus. 1963.—Flower buds were initiated on plants of Caryopteris × clandonensis A. Simmonds (C. incana [Houtt.] Miq. × C. mongholica Bunge) on all photopcriods but developed to anthesis only when daily dark periods exceeded 8 hr. Anthesis occurred in not less than 22 days after the beginning of 11 or more short photoperiods. Treatments with short days could be interrupted by as many as 30 non-inductive long days without significant increase in the minimum number of short days required for anthesis. Anthesis, like floral initiation of many plants, was reversibly controlled by red and far-red radiation acting through phytochrome. The inductive effectiveness of long dark periods was nullified by 1 min of red light or about 1 hr of far red. It was modified by night temperature in the range 45–70.F and filament lengths of stamens were shorter at night temperatures of 60 than at 70 F.  相似文献

The gregarious endoparasitoids Tetrastichus brontispae Ferrière is one of the important natural enemies of the coconut hispine beetle Brontispa longissima (Gestro), a serious invasive pest on coconut palm plants (Cocos nucifera L.) in Southeast Asia. Development at different temperatures, effect of host and female ages, effect of food and oviposition frequency and superparasitism were investigated in the laboratory. Females were allowed only one attack against one host in all experiments. The wasp developed in a host between 19 and 30°C, whilst no wasp completed its immature development at 16 and 31°C. Host and female ages affected parasitisation. Parasitoid emergence was high on day 0 and day 1 pupal hosts, and younger females produced more offspring than older females. The longevity of the female was affected not only by food supply, but also by oviposition frequency. The female survived longer when oviposition frequency was low. However, the total number of hosts parasitised by the female during her lifetime did not differ at different oviposition frequencies. In superparasitism, although the percentage of adult emergence and body size of offspring decreased with an increasing number of attacks per host, a host parasitised by up to four females could produce parasitoid offspring.  相似文献

Adult Helix aspersa snails were maintained individually forone week in plastic cages with 9 living Lupinus albus plantsas their only food. Among these 9 plants, 3 chemotypes bitter,intermediate and sweet which differed in their alkaloid contentwere equally represented. Each day, the leaf surface grazed and the number of leaves attackedby the snails were recorded for each chemotype and each snail.A consumption/ attack (C/A) ratio was calculated by dividing thesurface grazed (C) by the number of attacks (A). The numberof attacks and the grazed area were positively correlated foreach chemotype during the whole experiment, and the snails atesimilar quantities of lupin each day. After 4 and 6 days ofexperiment, we noticed a rejection of the bitter chemotype infavor of the intermediate and sweet ones respectively. Afterthe 6th day, the surface grazed per attack was significantlyhigher on the sweet chemotype than on the bitter plants. Wehypothesize that rejection of the bitter chemotype might berelated to (i) an alkaloids reaction threshold associated withan increase in the amount of alkaloids in the wounded plantsand/or (ii) aversive ingestive conditioning. In field plots, early and severe attacks of powdery mildew on spring barley plants greatly reduced the vigour, decreased the amount of root, the number of ear-bearing tillers and the grain size. In less severe, or later attacks, mildew mainly affected the grain size. On winter barley, where mildew attacked both in autumn and in spring, yield was decreased more than when only a spring attack occurred. The early attack retarded development of the root system, increased winter kill and decreased the number of ears reaching maturity. Because early mildew attack affects yield, it is not always possible to correlate yield loss with intensity of mildew at any one growth stage of the crop.  相似文献

Bot. 47(9): 753–757. Illus. 1960.—Environmental factors controlling inflorescence initiation and development of inflorescence proliferations were studied using controlled environments. Inflorescence initiation was promoted by long days (16 hr.) following vernalization of 1 wk. or more'at 10°C. Normal florets developed under high temperatures (21°–27°C.) and long days following initiation. Bulbils developed in place of normal florets at short days (8 hr.) and low temperatures (ca.20°C, or below). Long days and low temperatures or short days and high temperatures produced panicles containing both bulbils and normal florets. Two flower-promoting stimuli are proposed; one promoting inflorescence initiation and the second promoting floret differentiation. An increase in mean and extreme summer temperatures is expected as a consequence of climate changes and this might have an impact on plant development in numerous species. Root chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) is a major crop in northern Europe, and it is cultivated as a source of inulin. This polysaccharide is stored in the tap root during the first growing season when the plant grows as a leafy rosette, whereas bolting and flowering occur in the second year after winter vernalisation. The impact of heat stress on plant phenology, water status, photosynthesis-related parameters, and inulin content was studied in the field and under controlled phytotron conditions. In the field, plants of the Crescendo cultivar were cultivated under a closed plastic-panelled greenhouse to investigate heat-stress conditions, while the control plants were shielded with a similar, but open, structure. In the phytotrons, the Crescendo and Fredonia cultivars were exposed to high temperatures (35 °C day/28 °C night) and compared to control conditions (17 °C) over 10 weeks. In the field, heat reduced the root weight, the inulin content of the root and its degree of polymerisation in non-bolting plants. Flowering was observed in 12% of the heat stressed plants during the first growing season in the field. In the phytotron, the heat stress increased the total number of leaves per plant, but reduced the mean leaf area. Photosynthesis efficiency was increased in these plants, whereas osmotic potential was decreased. High temperature was also found to induced flowering of up to 50% of these plants, especially for the Fredonia cultivar. In conclusion, high temperatures induced a reduction in the growth of root chicory, although photosynthesis is not affected. Flowering was also induced, which indicates that high temperatures can partly substitute for the vernalisation requirement for the flowering of root chicory.  相似文献

The succinate oxidation capacities of mitochondria isolated from mango fruits (Mangifera indica L.) stored at 4, 8, 12, and 20 C were investigated during storage. In normally ripening fruits (at 12 and 20 C) the oxidative capacities increased during the first 10 days and then decreased slowly. At lower temperatures (4 and 8 C), the fruits showed chilling injury symptoms, after about 10 days of storage and the succinate oxidation capacities of mitochondria decreased progressively. Plots of succinate oxidation capacities as against storage temperature showed a marked discontinuity between 12 and 8 C, only when chilling injury was observed on fruits stored at low temperature.

The variations of mitochondrial fatty acid composition during the storage of fruits at different temperatures were also investigated. A marked decrease of the molar ratio palmitoleic acid/palmitic acid, the predominant fatty acids in mitochondrial lipids, was observed to accompany both the succinate oxidation decrease and the induction of chilling injury.

Some effects of medium composition, chelating agents and high temperatures on flowering in L. perpusilla 6746. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(7): 489–495. Illus. 1959.—-L. perpusilla 6746 flowers as a short-day plant on Hutner's medium (containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid [EDTA]) at constant temperatures from 25 to 30°C., but eventually flowers also in old cultures under 16 or 24 hr. of light. This old-culture flowering is more pronounced in dilute medium. Flowering is rapid under both long and short days at constant temperatures from 25 to 28°C. in media not containing EDTA; the addition of 10-5 M EDTA or of similar or higher concentrations of numerous other chelating agents suppresses flowering under long days but not under short (8 hr. light). This effect does not depend on promotion or inhibition of vegetative growth. At 29 to 30°C., a short-day requirement is manifested even in media permitting flowering under long days at the lower temperatures. Temperatures above 31°C. completely inhibit flowering under all conditions. Brief periods of high temperature given to plants under short-day conditions inhibit flowering when given during the dark period but not during the light period. The implications of these observations for the further study of flowering are discussed.  相似文献

Virus infection in garlic considerably reduces yield and quality in Argentina. The production of virus free “seed” was attempted by means of thermotherapy and meristem tip culture. A hot water treatment was employed to determine the lethal temperature/time combination for clonal type (c.t.) Blanco cloves. It was established that 50°C × 20 min, 50°C × 15 min and 55°C × 5 min were the limit thermal/time combinations which garlic could withstand. Those treatments were employed followed by meristem tip culture, however, none of the successfully developed plants after culture (only 13 %) were virus-free. Hot air treatments in a growth chamber at 36°C lasting for 30, 40 and 60 days, and at 25°–32° for 30 days in a greenhouse were tested on c.t. Blanco. Cloves kept at room temperature throughout the experiment were employed as controls. In the 25°–32°C treatment, 73% of meristems produced plants and, of these, 33 % were virus free. After 30 and 40 days at 36 °C, 62 % and 67 % of the meristems developed into plantlets, of which respectively 51 % and 50 % were virus-free. Very few meristems (10 %) developed into plants when cloves had been kept at 36°C for 60 days but the resulting plantlets were all virus free. Controls produced 78 % of plants, of which 14 % were virus free. Results of hot air treatments of 36 °C for 40 days performed on c.t. Colorado, Rosado, Paraguayo, Espaol and Hilario Ascasubi were similar to those obtained with c.t. Blanco. In Espaol and Hilario Ascasubi, no virus-free plants were detected among control specimens (no thermotherapy treatment). The only virus (from up to 3 that infected the plants) that persisted in some plants after themotherapy and meristem tip culture was garlic yellow streak.  相似文献

Deep and prolonged torpor in marsupials is only known from the pygmy possums, family Burramyidae. We investigated the pattern of torpor in the feathertail glider Acrobates pygmaeus (Acrobatidae) to determine whether members of other marsupial families also possess the ability of remaining torpid for several days with body temperatures (Tb) approaching 0°C. At high air temperatures (Ta) of 15 and 20°C, A. pygmaeus usually exhibited daily torpor. Torpor bouts at Ta 12°C usually lasted for about 2˙5 days and at Ta 8°C up to 5˙5 days. The metabolic rate during torpor was reduced to about 1% of that in normothermic, resting individuals. The Tb during torpor was regulated at about 2°C when Ta fell below about 0˙8 °C. Arousal from torpor was rapid and the mean fastest rewarming rate was 0˙88°C/min. While A. pygmaeus exhibited deep and prolonged torpor, its pattern differed somewhat from deep hibernation. Acrobates pygmaeus did not show prehibernation fattening and a subsequent prolonged hibernation period and it appears that prolonged torpor is used only in emergency situations.  相似文献

Screening of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli strains showed some that were able to nodulate common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) at high temperatures (35 and 38°C/8 h/day). The nodulation ability was not related to the capability to grow or produce melanin-like pigment in culture media at high temperatures. However, nodules formed at high temperatures were ineffective and plants did not accumulate N in shoots. Two thermal shocks of 40°C/8 h/day at flowering time drastically decreased nitrogenase activity and nodule relative efficiency of plants otherwise grown at 28°C. Recovery of nitrogenase activity began only after seven days, when new nodules formed; total incorporation of N in tops did not recover for 2 weeks. Non-inoculated beans receiving mineral N were not affected by the thermal shock, and when growing continuously at 35 or 38°C had total N accumulated in shoots reduced by only 18%.  相似文献

Steinberg , Robert A. (U.S.D.A., Beltsville, Md.) Comparison of daylength and temperature responses in Nicotiana and its taxonomic sections. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(4): 261–268. Illus. 1959.—Fifty-seven of the sixty species of Nicotiana were grown in the greenhouse under long- and short-day regimes. Supplemental tungsten light of about 30 ft.-c. (bench) was used to extend natural illumination to 16 hr. daily. Short-day controls received natural illumination for 9.5–12 hr. daily from about September to March. Two temperature levels were also employed—one with temperature held uniformly at about 25°C. and the other with a day temperature of about 20°C. and a night temperature of about 10°C. Daylength behavior of the species ranged from long-day to day-neutral to short-day. All species were brought into flower and all, except N. acaulis and N. ameghinoi, formed viable seed in at least 1 of the 4 environments. A modified classification of photoperiodic flowering responses based on rapidity and not ability to flower was adopted to permit quantitative comparison of species responses to both daylength and temperature. Very few species flowered equally rapidly (day-neutral) in both the 10- and 16-hr. day-lengths. Temperature level caused modifications in response from long-day to day-neutral and vice versa, and from short-day to day-neutral and vice versa. Data for N. glauca and some other species would indicate that a greater spread between temperature levels could possibly lead to opposite classifications at upper and lower temperatures. Excellent agreement was found between daylength responses of the species and the 14 taxonomic sections of Goodspeed for the genus Nicotiana. Only 2 of the sections (Paniculatae and Undulatae) were heterogeneous in that both included short- and long-day species in the same section. The native habitat of all short-day species was South America. Certain of the species gave a compensatory response to variations in light duration and low temperature similar to that given by sugarbeets and other biennials. This phenomenon may therefore be of general occurrence. Use of a quantitative expression for photoperiodic flowering responses is proposed to avoid ambiguity. It is the quotient of days from sowing to first blossom on short-days divided by that on long-days. The value 0.620°C. (9–12) would read short-day at 20°C. with 9–12 hr. daylengths. Close agreement was found in daylength flowering ratios in successive tests in the greenhouse. The ratios alter under cold treatment with species susceptible to low-temperature stimulation or inhibition of blossoming.  相似文献

The interaction between light and temperature during the development of freezing tolerance was studied in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var. Mv Emese). Ten-day-old plants were cold hardened at 5 degrees C for 12 days under normal (250 micromol m(-2)s(-1)) or low light (20 micromol m(-2)s(-1)) conditions. Some of the plants were kept at 20/18 degrees C for 12 days at high light intensity (500 micromol m(-2)s(-1)), which also increased the freezing tolerance of winter wheat. The freezing survival rate, the lipid composition, the antioxidant activity, and the salicylic acid content were investigated during frost hardening. The saturation level of hexadecanoic acid decreased not only in plants hardened at low temperature, but also, to a lesser extent, in plants kept under high light irradiation at normal growth temperature. The greatest induction of the enzymes glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2.) and ascorbate peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.11.) occurred when the cold treatment was carried out in normal light, but high light intensity at normal, non-hardening temperature also increased the activity of these enzymes. The catalase (EC 1.11.1.6.) activity was also higher in plants grown at high light intensity than in the controls. The greatest level of induction in the activity of the guaiacol peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7.) enzyme occurred under cold conditions with low light. The bound ortho-hydroxy-cinnamic acid increased by up to two orders of magnitude in plants that were cold hardened in normal light. Both high light intensity and low temperature hardening caused an increase in the free and bound salicylic acid content of the leaves. This increase was most pronounced in plants that were cold treated in normal light.  相似文献

Keeping French-bean plants before inoculation at 36, 32 or 28°C. for 1–2 days increased their susceptibility to infection with red clover mottle virus, but longer exposures to 36 and 32°C. decreased susceptibility. Susceptibility increased most rapidly at 36°C. The number of infections was unaffected by changes in post-inoculation temperatures between 12 and 24°C., but decreased above 24°C. The rate virus multiplied increased with increase of temperature up to 28°C., but the maximum virus concentrations reached at 18, 24 and 28°C. were very similar and above the maximum reached at 30°C.
Thiouracil inhibited infection slightly but neither it nor azaguanine affected the multiplication of red clover mottle virus in French bean. Trichothecin inhibited infection and interfered with virus accumulation. Inhibition of infection was associated with macroscopic injury to the leaves, and washing leaves up to 1 hr. after inoculation prevented both inhibition and leaf damage. Virus multiplication was not resumed when leaves were transferred from trichothecin solutions to water.  相似文献

Flowering requirements of three Scandinavian cultivars of Festuca pratensis Huds, have been studied in controlled environments. At 3 and 6°C, primary induction was independent of photoperiod, while short days (8 h) were more effective than long days (24 h) at higher temperatures. The critical temperature for induction was about 15°C in short days and about 12°C in long days. Saturation of induction required 18–20 weeks of exposure to optimal conditions. At temperatures below 12°C both induction and initiation of inflorescence primordia took place in long days, while a transition to long days was required for inflorescence initiation after primary induction in short days. A minimum of 8 long-day cycles were required for flowering of plants primary induced in short days and saturation of flowering required more than 16 cycles. The critical photoperiod for secondary induction was about 13 h. High temperature (21°C) had some devernalization effect in primary induced plants, suppressing flowering compared with 15°C.  相似文献
