Little is known about the regulation of temporal variations of progesterone over the 24-hr span in young cycling women as well as in postmenopausal women. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships between diurnal variations of progesterone and diurnal variations of hormones of the gonadotropic and corticotropic axes, and to provide further information on the source of progesterone secretion under physiological conditions. Twenty-four-hour hormonal profiles were explored under well-controlled laboratory conditions in 10 healthy women (21–36 yr old) with normal ovulatory cycles during early-mid follicular and late luteal phases, and in 8 healthy postmenopausal women (48–74 yr old). In young cycling women, significant positive relationships were found between progesterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) – but not luteinizing hormone (LH) – profiles during late luteal phase. Conversely, during follicular phase, significant positive relationships were evidenced between progesterone and cortisol profiles, but not between progesterone and FSH or LH. In postmenopausal women, strong positive correlations were found between progesterone and corticotropin (ACTH) or cortisol profiles. The present results indicate that during late luteal phase, temporal progesterone profiles are associated with FSH rather than with LH profiles. They also provide evidence that adrenal cortex is a major – or possibly the only – source of progesterone production during the follicular phase of the normal ovulatory cycle, and probably the only source after menopause.  相似文献

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is more common in men than in women for reasons that are not clearly understood. An underlying difference between men and women in the respiratory-related neural control of upper airway dilator muscles has been suggested as a possible reason for the gender difference. We have compared three aspects of upper airway dilator muscle function in healthy men and women: 1) resting inspiratory genioglossus electromyogram (EMGgg) activity, 2) the respiratory EMGgg "afterdischarge" after a brief hypoxic stimulus, and 3) the relationship between the EMGgg and pharyngeal airway pressure. Inspired minute ventilation (VI), epiglottic pressure (P(epi)), and EMGgg and diaphragm EMG (EMGdi) activity were measured in 24 subjects (12 men, 12 women in the luteal menstrual phase) and were compared between genders while lying supine awake. Every 7-8 min over 2 h, subjects were exposed to 45-s periods of isocapnic hypoxia (9% O(2) in N(2)) that were abruptly terminated with one breath of 100% O(2). The relationship between P(epi) and EMGgg activity was also compared between genders. The results of 117 trials with satisfactory end-tidal PCO(2) control and no sighs or swallows are reported. There was no gender difference in the resting level of peak inspiratory EMGgg [3.7 +/- 0.8 (women) vs. 3.2 +/- 0.6% maximal activity (men)]. Repeated-measures ANOVA showed no gender or gender-by-time interaction effect between men and women in VI or EMGgg or EMGdi activity during or after the hypoxic stimulus. The relationship between P(epi) and EMGgg was not different between men (slope -0.63 +/- 0.20) and women (slope -0.69 +/- 0.33). These results do not support the hypothesis that the higher prevalence of OSA in men is related to an underlying gender difference in respiratory neural control of upper airway dilator muscles.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the relationship between prolactin (PRL) levels and corpus luteum function in humans, assessment of temporal relationship between levels of PRL, LH, FSH, estradiol and progesterone was made in eleven normal cycling women and six short luteal women. All hormones were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. The mean PRL level in the luteal phase was higher than that in the follicular phase in normal women. On the other hand, no difference mean was seen between the PRL levels of follicular and luteal phases in short luteal women. In addition, follicular and luteal phase secretion of PRL in the short luteal phase (SLP) was lower than that in the normal control. LH and FSH in the follicular and luteal phases, estradiol secretion in the late follicular and early to mid-luteal phases in SLP were also lower than those in the control. These observations were consistent with the hypothesis that SLP is a sequel to aberrant folliculogenesis. In addition, it is inferred that low PRL levels in the SLP might be due to inadequate augmentation by estrogen, rather than giving PRL any positive controlling role in the maintenance of corpus luteum function.  相似文献

Morning levels of serum melatonin, FSH, LH, prolactin (PRL), progesterone and estradiol were studied by RIA during the ovarian cycle, perimenopause and menopause in 79 healthy women. FSH and LH levels showed a slight nonsignificant increase from the fertile period to perimenopause, exhibiting a significantly greater increase during menopause. PRL, progesterone and estradiol showed parallel changes, reaching lower levels during menopause. Serum melatonin levels decreased with age, attaining minimum levels in menopause. FSH and estradiol were significantly correlated with melatonin in the follicular phase, while in the luteal phase a negative correlation was found between melatonin, progesterone and estradiol. No significant correlations were noted between serum hormone levels during the perimenopausal period. In menopause, as during the follicular phase, melatonin and FSH were negatively correlated. As expected, a significant positive correlation was found between morning serum levels of melatonin and nocturnal urinary excretion of this indoleamine in all groups studied.  相似文献

Body temperature and sleep change in association with increased progesterone in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle in young women. The mechanism by which progesterone raises body temperature is not known but may involve prostaglandins, inducing a thermoregulatory adjustment similar to that of fever. Prostaglandins also are involved in sleep regulation and potentially could mediate changes in sleep during the menstrual cycle. We investigated the possible role of central prostaglandins in mediating menstrual-associated 24-h temperature and sleep changes by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis with a therapeutic dose of the centrally acting cyclooxygenase inhibitor acetaminophen in the luteal and follicular phases of the menstrual cycle in young women. Body temperature was raised, and nocturnal amplitude was blunted, in the luteal phase compared with the follicular phase. Acetaminophen had no effect on the body temperature profile in either menstrual cycle phase. Prostaglandins, therefore, are unlikely to mediate the upward shift of body temperature in the luteal phase. Sleep changed during the menstrual cycle: on the placebo night in the luteal phase the women had less rapid eye movement sleep and more slow-wave sleep than in the follicular phase. Acetaminophen did not alter sleep architecture or subjective sleep quality. Prostaglandin inhibition with acetaminophen, therefore, had no effect on the increase in body temperature or on sleep in the midluteal phase of the menstrual cycle in young women, making it unlikely that central prostaglandin synthesis underlies these luteal events.  相似文献

The role of gonadal hormones on pain sensations was investigated in normally menstruating women (n = 16) using the cold pressor test. Tolerance time, pain threshold, and pain intensity were examined once a week during a 4-wk period, and serum concentrations of 17beta-estradiol and progesterone were determined at each test session, which were classified into the early follicular phase, late follicular phase, early luteal phase, and late luteal phase, as determined by the first day of menses and the actual hormone levels recorded. A group of men (n = 10) of the same age interval was examined for comparison. The data show that pain threshold was reduced during the late luteal phase compared with the late follicular phase, and hormone analyses showed significant positive correlation between the progesterone concentration and lowered pain threshold and increasing pain intensity. Hormone analysis also showed an interaction between S-estradiol and S-progesterone on pain intensity, demonstrating that the increased perceived pain intensity that was associated with high progesterone concentrations was significantly reduced with increasing levels of estradiol. While no statistically significant sex differences in pain measurements were found, women displayed much more pronounced, and statistically significant, session-to-session effects than men, with increased pain threshold and decreased pain intensity with each test session. Hence, these data suggest that the changes in the serum concentration of gonadal hormones that occur during the menstrual cycle influence pain sensations elicited by noxious tonic cold stimulation and show that adaptation to the cold pressor test may be sex dependent.  相似文献

Prevalence of excessive erythrocytosis, the main sign of chronic mountain sickness (CMS), is greater in postmenopausal Andean women than in premenopausal women. It is uncertain whether this greater prevalence is related to the decline in female hormones and ventilatory function after the occurrence of the menopause. To study this, we compared the physiological variables involved in the physiopathology of CMS [end-tidal CO(2) (PET(CO(2)), Torr) and end-tidal O(2) (PET(O(2)), Torr), arterial oxygen saturation (Sa(O(2)), %), and Hb concentration (g/dl)] and progesterone and estradiol levels between postmenopausal and premenopausal women, both in the luteal and follicular phases. Women residing in Cerro de Pasco (n = 33; 4,300 m) aged 26--62 yr were studied. Postmenopausal women compared with premenopausal women in the luteal phase had lower PET(O(2)) (48 +/- 4 vs. 53 +/- 2 Torr, P = 0.005) and Sa(O(2)) levels (82 +/- 12 vs. 88 +/- 12%, P < 0.005) and higher PET(CO(2)) (34 +/- 2 vs. 29 +/- 3 Torr, P = 0.005) and Hb concentration (19 +/- 1 vs. 14 +/- 2 g/dl, P < 0.005). In addition, plasma progesterone was negatively correlated with PET(CO(2)) and positively correlated with PET(O(2)) and Sa(O(2)). No clear relationship was found among the cycle phases between estradiol and the variables studied. In conclusion, our results reveal that, before menopause, there is better oxygenation and lower Hb levels in women long residing at altitude, and this is associated with higher levels of progesterone in the luteal phase of the cycle.  相似文献

The Compensatory Prophylaxis Hypothesis (CPH) proposes that during periods of increased susceptibility to infections, e.g., during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle when progesterone suppresses immune function, women should feel more disgust toward pathogen cues and behave prophylactically. We investigate differences in disgust sensitivity and contamination sensitivity during different phases of the menstrual cycle in regularly cycling, healthy 93 rural and urban Polish women using the within-subject design. Disgust sensitivity was measured during two different phases of a menstrual cycle: 1) the follicular phase (the 5th or 6th day of the cycle) and 2) the luteal phase (on the 5th day after a positive ovulatory test or on 20th day of a cycle if the result of the ovulatory test was not positive). In the luteal phase, women scored higher on the Pathogen Disgust of the Three-Domain Disgust Scale, the Contamination Obsessions and Washing Compulsions Subscale of Padua Inventory, and on ratings of photographs showing sources of potential infections than in the follicular phase. Moral Disgust of the Three-Domain Disgust Scale did not differ between cycle phases. Hence, results suggest that women feel more disgusted toward cues to pathogens during the luteal phase, when susceptibility to infection is greater. We suggest that it is necessary to incorporate ovulatory testing as well as to conduct repeated measurements of disgust sensitivity in future tests of the CPH. Moreover, we believe that understanding how the feeling of pathogen disgust varies across the menstrual cycle and in relation to progesterone levels could be useful in designing effective infectious diseases prevention strategies for women.  相似文献

Differences during the follicular and luteal phases in the secretion of pregnane compounds by rat ovaries were studied. Daily s.c. injections of 2 mg of progesterone that began at early diestrus prolonged the diestrus stage for the duration of the treatment. In the follicular phase, normal proestrus and proestrus delayed by progesterone treatment were examined. In the luteal phase, day 6 of pseudopregnancy was examined. 20 alpha-hydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one accounted for most of total amount of pregnane compounds secreted from ovaries in the follicular phase, and progesterone and 20 alpha-hydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one for most at the luteal phase. The levels of 5 alpha-pregnane compounds were low in both phases. Injection of 2 micrograms of luteinizing hormone (LH) before sample collection increased the secretion of progesterone in the follicular phase, but not in the luteal phase. The secretion of 5 alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione and 3 alpha-hydroxy-5 alpha-pregnan-20-one was increased by the injection of LH in either phase, but the ability of the ovaries to produce these steroids was low, suggesting that there was low 5 alpha-reductase activity in the ovaries of rats with delayed proestrus and pseudopregnant rats.  相似文献

Women's sexual interest changes with hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle. It is unclear how hormones modify women's sexual behavior and desire, but one possibility is that they alter women's positive appraisals of stimuli and thus their sexual interest. Using 3 T fMRI, we measured neural activation in women at two time points in their menstrual cycle (late follicular, luteal) while they evaluated photos of men presented as potential sexual partners. Participants were ten heterosexual women aged 23-28 none of who was using hormonal contraceptives or in a committed relationship. In an event-related design, the women were presented with as series of photos of male faces and asked questions to assess their degree of sexual interest in the men depicted. Results demonstrate an overall effect of menstrual cycle phase on neural activation. During their follicular versus luteal phase, women demonstrated increased activation in the right medial orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), suggesting increased positive appraisal. Activation in the OFC was positively correlated with women's estradiol to progesterone ratios. There were no areas that demonstrated increased activation during the luteal versus follicular phase. The observed increase in activation in the OFC during the follicular phase may reflect a hormonally mediated increase in appetitive motivation and may prime women towards increased sexual interest and behavior around ovulation.  相似文献

Daily plasma concentrations of FSH, LH, oestradiol-17 beta and progesterone were compared for 12 cycles with a short luteal phase and 19 cycles with a luteal phase of normal length (i.e. cycles in which the luteal phase lasted 12 or more days). FSH and LH concentrations were suppressed in short luteal-phase cycles in the early follicular phase and the length of the follicular phase was prolonged (median duration, 14.5 days, range 13-21 days: compared with 12 days, range 9-17, in control cycles; P less than 0.025). Preovulatory oestradiol-17 beta values and the mid-cycle concentrations of FSH and LH were similar in both groups. Plasma progesterone values in the luteal phase were similar in both groups over the 2nd to 5th days inclusive after the midcycle LH peak but declined in the short luteal phases thereafter. In short luteal-phase cycles, menstruation occurred in the presence of higher levels of oestradiol-17 beta and progesterone than in cycles of normal length and the rise of gonadotrophin in the late luteal phase of the cycle was delayed. These findings suggest that in cycles with a short luteal phase there is a lack of synchrony between the ovarian and menstrual events.  相似文献

Single serum progesterone determinations were made in 79 apparently normal women with a regular menstrual cycle. A normal range (40 subjects) was derived from the concentrations in the follicular phase and used to define an "anovular" range for luteal phase values (nine out of 39 subjects). The remaining luteal phase values were used to construct an "ovular" range for the luteal phase and, within this range, to define a group of values (less than the 20th centile) which could be described as a "defective luteal phase." The cut off limits between ovular and anovular and between normal and defective luteal phases were respectively two and four times the follicular phase median. It is proposed that the numerical findings of this study may be used as a rule of thumb for defining normality and abnormality from a single serum progesterone determination.  相似文献

Gonadal steroids (estradiol and progesterone) can alter neuronal functioning, but electrophysiological evidence in women is still sparse. Therefore, the present study investigated event-related potentials (ERPs) to neutral stimuli over the course of the menstrual cycle. In addition, associations between ERPs and salivary estradiol and progesterone concentrations were investigated. Eighteen young healthy women were tested at three different phases of their menstrual cycle (menses, and follicular and luteal phases). ERPs (i.e., the N1 and P2 components, reflecting cortical arousal and the orienting response, the N2, P3, and the Slow Wave (SW), reflecting controlled processing) were measured using two different paradigms. In the luteal phase, early ERPs reflecting the cortical arousal response were diminished in the first stimulus block indicating an attenuated orienting response. These changes were significantly correlated with estradiol as well as progesterone levels. As to the later ERP components, the N2 latency was shorter during menses compared to the other two phases. No menstrual cycle-associated changes were apparent in other late ERP components. In sum, this study documents changes in auditory ERPs across the menstrual cycle with the most prominent changes occurring during the luteal phase. Future ERP studies therefore need to be more attentive to the issue of menstrual phase when studying female subjects or female patients.  相似文献

Changes in the secretion of LH during the oestrous cycle were studied in 5 tame Père David's deer in which ovulation was synchronized with progesterone implants and prostaglandin injections. Plasma LH concentrations were measured in samples collected at 15-min intervals for a 36-h period, starting 16 h after the removal of the progesterone implants (follicular phase), and for a further 10-h period 10 days after the removal of the progesterone implants (luteal phase). In all animals, there was a preovulatory surge of LH and behavioural oestrus which occurred at a mean time of 59.6 h (+/- 3.25) and 69 h respectively following implant removal. LH pulse frequency was significantly higher during the follicular phase (0.59 +/- 0.03 pulses/h) than the luteal phase (0.24 +/- 0.2 pulses/h), thus confirming in deer findings from research on domesticated ruminants. There were no significant differences between the follicular and luteal phases in mean plasma LH concentrations (0.57 +/- 0.09 and 0.74 +/- 0.13 ng/ml) or mean pulse amplitude (0.99 +/- 0.14 and 1.05 +/- 0.21 ng/ml) for the follicular and luteal phase respectively. The long interval from the removal of progesterone to the onset of the LH surge and the absence of a significant difference in mean LH concentration or pulse amplitude in the follicular and luteal phases resemble published data for cattle but differ from sheep in which there is a short interval from luteal regression to the onset of the surge and a marked increase in LH pulse amplitude during the luteal phase.  相似文献

Human body odours have been reported to influence female mate choice. Women prefer the odours of immunocompatible men and, during their fertile period, judge the body odours of men with symmetrical bodies--which is indicative of genetic quality--as sexy and pleasant. The reproductive success of men largely depends on mating with fertile women, but it is not known whether men can detect a woman's fertile period. We asked women who had regular menstrual cycles and who were not using hormonal contraceptives to wear a T-shirt for three consecutive nights during their late follicular (ovulatory) phase and another T-shirt during the luteal (non-ovulatory) phase of their menstrual cycle. Male raters judged the odours of T-shirts worn during the follicular phase as more pleasant and sexy than odours from T-shirts worn during the luteal phase. The odour differences between the follicular and luteal phases did not dissipate quickly over time as male raters were able to detect and judge follicular phase body odours as more pleasant and sexy than the odours from the luteal phase even after the T-shirts were kept at room temperature for one week. These findings suggest that ovulation may not be concealed and that men could use ovulation-linked odours in their mate selection.  相似文献

Numerous studies from our and other laboratories have shown that women have a lower respiratory exchange ratio (RER) during exercise than equally trained men, indicating a greater reliance on fat oxidation. Differences in estrogen concentration between men and women likely play a role in this sex difference. Differing estrogen and progesterone concentrations during the follicular (FP) and luteal (LP) phases of the female menstrual cycle suggest that fuel use may also vary between phases. The purpose of the current study was to determine the effect of menstrual cycle phase and sex upon glucose turnover and muscle glycogen utilization during endurance exercise. Healthy, recreationally active young women (n = 13) and men (n = 11) underwent a primed constant infusion of [6,6-2H]glucose with muscle biopsies taken before and after a 90-min cycling bout at 65% peak O2 consumption. LP women had lower glucose rate of appearance (Ra, P = 0.03), rate of disappearance (Rd, P = 0.03), and metabolic clearance rate (MCR, P = 0.04) at 90 min of exercise and lower proglycogen (P = 0.04), macroglycogen (P = 0.04), and total glycogen (P = 0.02) utilization during exercise compared with FP women. Men had a higher RER (P = 0.02), glucose Ra (P = 0.03), Rd (P = 0.03), and MCR (P = 0.01) during exercise compared with FP women, and men had a higher RER at 75 and 90 min of exercise (P = 0.04), glucose Ra (P = 0.01), Rd (P = 0.01), and MCR (P = 0.001) and a greater PG utilization (P = 0.05) compared with LP women. We conclude that sex, and to a lesser extent menstrual cycle, influence glucose turnover and glycogen utilization during moderate-intensity endurance exercise.  相似文献

Sex differences in attentional selection of global and local components of stimuli have been hypothesized to underlie sex differences in cognitive strategy choice. A Navon figure paradigm was employed in 32 men, 41 naturally cycling women (22 follicular, 19 luteal) and 19 users of oral contraceptives (OCs) containing first to third generation progestins in their active pill phase. Participants were first asked to detect targets at any level (divided attention) and then at either the global or the local level only (focused attention). In the focused attention condition, luteal women showed reduced global advantage (i.e. faster responses to global vs. local targets) compared to men, follicular women and OC users. Accordingly, global advantage during the focused attention condition related significantly positively to testosterone levels and significantly negatively to progesterone, but not estradiol levels in a multiple regression model including all naturally cycling women and men. Interference (i.e. delayed rejection of stimuli displaying targets at the non-attended level) was significantly enhanced in OC users as compared to naturally cycling women and related positively to testosterone levels in all naturally cycling women and men. Remarkably, when analyzed separately for each group, the relationship of testosterone to global advantage and interference was reversed in women during their luteal phase as opposed to men and women during their follicular phase. As global processing is lateralized to the right and local processing to the left hemisphere, we speculate that these effects stem from a testosterone-mediated enhancement of right-hemisphere functioning as well as progesterone-mediated inter-hemispheric decoupling.  相似文献

A study of the changes in CO2 sensitivity at rest was undertaken in 20 regularly menstruating females in an attempt to determine the influence of the menstrual cycle on this variable. A biphasic oral temperature graph was used to signify fertility and demarcate three phases of the cycle. A CO2-rebreathing test was conducted 3 times/wk for 6 wk to obtain CO2 sensitivity and CO2 threshold measures. An analysis of variance was used to compare the results collected in each phase of the cycle for each of the variables. A significant increase was found in the sensitivity to CO2 between the follicular and luteal phases, a significant decrease between the luteal and menstrual phases, and no significant difference between the follicular and menstrual phases. The change between follicular and luteal phases was attributed to the effect of progesterone, which is elevated during the luteal phase. No significant change was found in the CO2 threshold level.  相似文献

We hypothesized that increased chemical control instability (CCI) in men could partially explain the male predominance in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). CCI was assessed by sequentially increasing respiratory control system loop gain (LG) with proportional-assist ventilation (PAV) in 10 men (age 24-48 yr) and 9 women (age 22-36 yr) until periodic breathing or awakening occurred. Women were studied in both the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. The amount by which PAV amplified LG was quantified from the tidal volume amplification factor [(VtAF) assisted tidal volume/unassisted tidal volume]. LG was calculated as the inverse of the VtAF occurring at the assist level immediately preceding the emergence of periodic breathing (when LG x VtAF = 1). Only 1 of 10 men and 2 of 9 women developed periodic breathing with PAV. The rest were resistant to periodic breathing despite moderately high levels of PAV amplification. We conclude that LG is low in the majority of normal men and women and that higher volume amplification factors are needed to determine whether gender differences exist in this low range.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of baclofen administration on growth hormone (GH) secretion during different phases of the menstrual cycle. METHODS: Twelve healthy women (33.6 +/- (SD) 2.8 years; range 23-40 years) with regular menstrual cycles were enrolled. The phases of the menstrual cycle were determined using transvaginal ultrasonography (TV-US) and detecting hormonal serum levels. Plasma GH levels were evaluated during the early follicular, periovulatory and luteal phases of the cycle before and after the baclofen challenge test. RESULTS: After acute baclofen administration, GH levels increased significantly (p < 0.001) compared to basal values during the periovulatory and luteal phases, while no significant variation was detected during the early follicular phase. In addition, plasma GH levels resulted significantly (p < 0.001) higher during the luteal phase than during the periovulatory phase. CONCLUSION: Acute baclofen administration induces a significant increase in plasma GH levels in healthy females during the periovulatory and luteal phases, but not during the early follicular phase. These data suggest a modulator role of plasma sex steroids levels on GH release induced by baclofen.  相似文献
