1. Fish play a key role in the functioning of temperate shallow lakes by affecting nutrient exchange among habitats as well as lake trophic structure and dynamics. These processes are, in turn, strongly influenced by the abundance of submerged macrophytes, because piscivorous fish are often abundant at high macrophyte density. Whether this applies to warmer climates as well is virtually unknown. 2. To compare fish community structure and dynamics in plant beds between subtropical and temperate shallow lakes we conducted experiments with artificial submerged and free‐floating plant beds in a set of 10 shallow lakes in Uruguay (30°–35°S) and Denmark (55°–57°N), paired along a gradient of limnological characteristics. 3. The differences between regions were more pronounced than differences attributable to trophic state. The subtropical littoral fish communities were characterised by higher species richness, higher densities, higher biomass, higher trophic diversity (with predominance of omnivores and lack of true piscivores) and smaller body size than in the comparable temperate lakes. On average, fish densities were 93 ind. m−2 (±10 SE) in the subtropical and 10 ind. m−2 (±2 SE) in the temperate lakes. We found a twofold higher total fish biomass per unit of total phosphorus in the subtropical than in the temperate lakes, and as fish size is smaller in the former, the implication is that more energy reaches the littoral zone fish community of the warmer lakes. 4. Plant architecture affected the spatial distribution of fish within each climate zone. Thus, in the temperate zone fish exhibited higher densities among the artificial free‐floating plants while subtropical fish were denser in the artificial submerged plant beds. These patterns appeared in most lakes, regardless of water turbidity or trophic state. 5. The subtropical littoral fish communities resembled the fish communities typically occurring in temperate eutrophic and hypertrophic lakes. Our results add to the growing evidence that climate warming may lead to more complex and omnivory‐dominated food webs and higher density and dominance of smaller‐sized fish. This type of community structure may lead to a weakening of the trophic cascading effects commonly observed in temperate shallow lakes and a higher risk of eutrophication.  相似文献

1. Structural complexity may stabilise predator–prey interactions and affect the outcome of trophic cascades by providing prey refuges. In deep lakes, vulnerable zooplankton move vertically to avoid fish predation. In contrast, submerged plants often provide a diel refuge against fish predation for large‐bodied zooplankton in shallow temperate lakes, with consequences for the whole ecosystem. 2. To test the extent to which macrophytes serve as refuges for zooplankton in temperate and subtropical lakes, we introduced artificial plant beds into the littoral area of five pairs of shallow lakes in Uruguay (30°–35°S) and Denmark (55°–57°N). We used plants of different architecture (submerged and free‐floating) along a gradient of turbidity over which the lakes were paired. 3. We found remarkable differences in the structure (taxon‐richness at the genus level, composition and density) of the zooplankton communities in the littoral area between climate zones. Richer communities of larger‐bodied taxa (frequently including Daphnia spp.) occurred in the temperate lakes, whereas small‐bodied taxa characterised the subtropical lakes. More genera and a higher density of benthic/plant‐associated cladocerans also occurred in the temperate lakes. The density of all crustaceans, except calanoid copepods, was significantly higher in the temperate lakes (c. 5.5‐fold higher). 4. Fish and shrimps (genus Palaemonetes) seemed to exert a stronger predation pressure on zooplankton in the plant beds in the subtropical lakes, while the pelagic invertebrate Chaoborus sp. was slightly more abundant than in the temperate lakes. In contrast, plant‐associated predatory macroinvertebrates were eight times more abundant in the temperate than in the subtropical lakes. 5. The artificial submerged plants hosted significantly more cladocerans than the free‐floating plants, which were particularly avoided in the subtropical lakes. Patterns indicating diel horizontal migration were frequently observed for both overall zooplankton density and individual taxa in the temperate, but not the subtropical, lakes. In contrast, patterns of diel vertical migration prevailed for both the overall zooplankton and for most individual taxa in the subtropics, irrespective of water turbidity. 6. Higher fish predation probably shapes the general structure and dynamics of cladoceran communities in the subtropical lakes. Our results support the hypothesis that horizontal migration is less prevalent in the subtropics than in temperate lakes, and that no predator‐avoidance behaviour effectively counteracts predation pressure in the subtropics. Positive effects of aquatic plants on water transparency, via their acting as a refuge for zooplankton, may be generally weak or rare in warm lakes.  相似文献

The role that temperature plays in excluding large daphnid species from subtropical and tropical ponds, and competitive relationships between Daphnia laevis and Daphnia magna, are explored. D. magna, a large temperate species is probably not excluded from subtropical or tropical systems by elevated temperatures. However, D. magna was a poorer competitor, under a restricted set of laboratory conditions, than D. laevis, the only pond dwelling daphnid in subtropical Florida. Competition is proposed as one mechanism that may limit the number of daphnid species in subtropical and tropical ponds and lakes. Reduced environmental fluctuations in subtropical and tropical systems (compared with temperate systems) may allow zooplankton populations to reach an environmental carrying capacity where competition limits the number of similar, coexisting species in a habitat.  相似文献

The planktonic ciliate populations of 30 Florida lakes constituting a broad trophic gradient were examined to determine the response of protozoan community structure to increasing eutrophication. Both ciliate abundance and biomass were strongly related to lake trophic state. Comparison of the Florida data base with a comparable north temperate lake group indicated that subtropical lakes generally possess higher ciliate abundance and biomass at a given trophic state than temperate lakes. However the equations derived for each data base were not significantly different. Community diversity and species richness increased with increasing lake productivity. Highly acidic lakes displayed significantly reduced diversity and numbers of species when contrasted with nonacidic oligotrophic lakes. Small-bodied (< 30 um) ciliates dominated all lakes but were proportionally less important in oligotrophic lakes. Presence-absence data produced three assemblages: an ubiquitous association of primarily small ciliate taxa, a group of large ciliates mainly restricted to eutrophic-hypereutrophic lakes, and a very large ciliate,Stentor niger, which dominated the protozoan communities of acidic oligotrophic lakes.  相似文献

Diapause and cold tolerance are essential for temperate insects to pass the winter, with the mechanisms controlling these two traits varying considerably among insects. In the present study, diapause and cold tolerance are compared among three Leptopilina species: Leptopilina japonica Novkovi? & Kimura, Leptopilina victoriae Nordlander and Leptopilina ryukyuensis Novkovi? & Kimura, all larval parasitoids of frugivorous drosophilid flies, with the aim of understanding their climatic adaptations. The first species is divided into the temperate (Leptopilina japonica japonica) and subtropical subspecies (Leptopilina japonica formosana), and the latter two species are distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions. The temperate subspecies of L. japonica enters prepupal diapause at low temperatures (15 or 18 °C), irrespective of photoperiod, and some individuals enter diapause when exposed to 0 °C for 1 or 2 day(s) or when placed at low humidity. Leptopilina victoriae also shows signs of diapause initiation at 15 °C, although L. ryukyuensis and L. j. formosana from the subtropical regions do not. Preimaginal viability at low temperature (13, 14 or 15 °C) is usually lower in L. victoriae from the tropical regions compared with L. japonica or L. ryukyuensis from the temperate or subtropical regions. Diapausing prepupae of the temperate subspecies appear to be cold tolerant. However, the cold tolerance of nondiapausing prepupae, pupae and adult females varies little among the tropical, subtropical and temperate species or subspecies, and adult males of the temperate subspecies of L. japonica are less cold tolerant than those of the tropical or subtropical species or subspecies. Cold tolerance may be unnecessary, except for diapausing individuals of the temperate species, because nondiapausing individuals appear in warmer seasons.  相似文献

Favites flexuosa is one of the abundant coral species in the temperate regions of Japan. Although the species ranges widely, from tropical to temperate regions of the Indo-Pacific, colonies of this species living in temperate areas exhibit specific morphological features (in terms of color and skeletal attributes). In addition, the temperate-specific morphotype is limited in distribution to the temperate regions of Japan and has not been recorded in subtropical Okinawa. In the present study, we recorded the temperate morphotype in subtropical Lyudao (Green Island), Taiwan, suggesting that the morphotype is more widely distributed than previously thought and may have colonized temperate Japan directly from Lyudao. We describe the first records of spawning at Lyudao, Taiwan, and also at Wakayama in temperate Japan. In laboratories located in either region, spawning was observed between 30?min and 1?h after sunset. Intraspecific crossing of morphotype samples from either region revealed that the fertilization rates were high (>90%). In addition, we crossed F. flexuosa with Diploastrea favus at Lyudao. The two species hybridized successfully although the fertilization rate was relatively low.  相似文献

This article summarizes the outcomes of the 15th Workshop of the International Association for Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology. Four major issues dealing with the role of physical factors in phytoplankton ecology were addressed in the articles of this special volume: global change and its likely impacts on phytoplankton, the role of physical factors in the autecology of particular species, impacts on the inocula for the following years, and the role of light in shaping phytoplankton dynamics. Case studies from different types of aquatic environments (rivers, deep and shallow lakes, floodplain lakes, wetlands, oxbows, and even the deep ocean) and from diverse geographical locations (not only from the Mediterranean and temperate regions, but also from subtropical and tropical ones) have shown that physical forcing exerts a variety of selective pressures with impacts ranging from molding shape and size of organisms to modifying, through cascade effects, the structure of whole ecosystems.  相似文献

Shallow lakes, the most abundant lake type in the world, are very sensitive to climatic changes. The structure and functioning of shallow lakes are greatly impacted by submerged plants, and these may be affected by climate warming in various, contrasting, ways. Following a space‐for‐time substitution approach, we aimed to analyse the role of aquatic (submerged and free‐floating) plants in shallow lakes under warm climates. We introduced artificial submerged and free‐floating plant beds in five comparable lakes located in the temperate zone (Denmark, 55–57 °N) and in the subtropical zone (Uruguay, 30–35 °S), with the aim to study the structure and dynamics of the main associated communities. Regardless of differences in environmental variables, such as area, water transparency and nutrient status, we found consistent patterns in littoral community dynamics and structure (i.e. densities and composition of fish, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and periphyton) within, but substantial differences between, the two regions. Subtropical fish communities within the macrophyte beds exhibited higher diversity, higher density, smaller size, lower relative abundance of potentially piscivores, and a preference for submerged plants, compared with otherwise similar temperate lakes. By contrast, macroinvertebrates and cladocerans had higher taxon richness and densities, and periphyton higher biomass, in the temperate lakes. Several indicators suggest that the fish predation pressure was much stronger among the plants in the subtropical lakes. The antipredator behaviour of cladocerans also differed significantly between climate zones. Submerged and free‐floating plants exerted different effects on the spatial distribution of the main communities, the effects differing between the climate zones. In the temperate lakes, submerged plants promoted trophic interactions with potentially positive cascading effects on water transparency, in contrast to the free‐floating plants, and in strong contrast to the findings in the subtropical lakes. The higher impact of fish may result in higher sensitivity of warm lakes to external changes (e.g. increase in nutrient loading or water level changes). The current process of warming, particularly in temperate lakes, may entail an increased sensitivity to eutrophication, and a threat to the high diversity, clear water state.  相似文献

We analyze phylogenetic relationships among temperate, subtropical highland, and subtropical lowland species of the Drosophila takahashii and montium species subgroups based on sequence data of COI and Gpdh genes and discuss the evolution of temperate species in these subgroups with reference to their climatic adaptations. In the takahashii subgroup, D. lutescens (the temperate species) branched off first in the tree based on the combined data set, but D. prostipennis (the subtropical highland species) branched off first in the trees based on single genes. Thus, phylogenetic relationships in this subgroup are still ambiguous. In the montium subgroup, the cool-temperate species are phylogenetically close to the warm-temperate species, and these cool- and warm-temperate species form a cluster with the subtropical highland species. This suggests that perhaps the cool-temperate species derived from the warm-temperate species and the warm-temperate species derived from the subtropical highland species. In comparison with the subtropical lowland species, the subtropical highland species may be better able to colonize temperate areas since, as in the temperate species, they have an ability to develop their ovaries at moderately low temperature. However, the subtropical highland species, as well as the subtropical lowland species, were much less cold tolerant than the temperate species. Therefore, considerable genetic reformation would be required for both the subtropical highland and the subtropical lowland species to adapt to temperate climates.  相似文献

An Analysis of Fish Species Richness in Natural Lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There is a growing recognition of the need to conserve biodiversity that has been conceptualised in the Convention of Biological Diversity. Maintenance of fish species richness is particularly important, because habitat degradation in inland waters continues to accelerate on a global scale. Here we develop empirical models for predicting fish species richness in natural lakes in various geographical regions of the world. In tropical lakes where fish biodiversity is richer than in temperate lakes, fish species richness can be predicted by a few variables such as lake area and altitude. Low fish species richness in most temperate lakes might be due to the effect of glaciation on colonisation and speciation of fishes. In US, Canadian and northern European lakes, lake acidification is one of the important factors influencing fish species richness. Although limnological characteristics influence fish species richness in temperate lakes, lake area and altitude have greater predictive power. This is in contrast to fish species richness in rivers, which can be reliably predicted by basin area. In the power curves, which describe the relationship between fish species richness and habitat size in lakes and rivers, the exponent is always greater in tropical regions than in temperate regions. Because fish biodiversity is greater in the tropics threats to fish biodiversity through habitat degradation are greater than those in temperate inland waters.  相似文献

The Holocene evolution of eight South African coastal lakes and lagoons is examined and related to changes in fish composition over that period. Historical and current connectivity with riverine and marine environments are the primary determinants of present‐day fish assemblages in these systems. A small and remarkably consistent group of relict estuarine species have persisted in these coastal lakes and lagoons. The loss or reduction of connectivity with the sea has impacted on the diversity of marine fishes in all eight study systems, with no marine fishes occurring in those water bodies where connectivity has been completely broken (e.g. Sibaya, Groenvlei). In systems that have retained tenuous linkages with the sea (e.g., Verlorenvlei, Wilderness lakes), elements of the marine fish assemblage have persisted, especially the presence of facultative catadromous species. Freshwater fish diversity in coastal lakes and lagoons is a function of historical and present biogeography and salinity. From a freshwater biogeography perspective, the inflowing rivers of the four temperate systems reviewed here contain three or fewer native freshwater fishes, while the subtropical lakes that are fed by river systems contain up to 40 freshwater fish species. Thus, the significantly higher fish species diversity in subtropical versus temperate coastal lakes and lagoons comes as no surprise. Fish species diversity has been increased further in some systems (e.g., Groenvlei) by alien fish introductions. However, the impacts of fish introductions and translocations have not been studied in the coastal lakes and lagoons of South Africa. In these closed systems, it is probable that predation impacts on small estuarine fishes are significant. The recent alien fish introductions is an example of the growing threats to these systems during the Anthropocene, a period when human activities have had significant negative impacts and show potential to match the changes recorded during the entire Holocene.  相似文献

The genetic diversity of the ciguatera fish poisoning-related dinoflagellate distributed in Japanese coastal areas was investigated. The entire sequence of the 5.8S rRNA gene and two internal transcribed (ITS) regions were determined, which included putative pseudogenes, from 19 strains of dinoflagellates assigned to the genus Gambierdiscus Adachi et Fukuyo collected from Japanese subtropical and temperate coastal areas. The sequences obtained from the 19 strains were divided into two types based on sequence similarity. Here we designate the two types as type 1 and type 2. For the relationship between the genotypes and origins of the strains used, the strains collected from subtropical areas possessed the type 1 sequence; whereas those from temperate areas possessed the type 2. This observation led us to question former reputations that Gambierdiscus cells observed in Japanese temperate areas are immigrants from Japanese subtropical areas. Subsequently, we sequenced a part of the 18S rRNA gene from two strains from subtropical areas and two from temperate areas. Unfortunately, phylogenetic analysis including the sequences obtained from various gonyaulacales dinoflagellates failed to determine the species phylogenetically closely related to and possible origin(s) of the Gambierdiscus sp. from the Japanese coastal areas.  相似文献

Primary production was measured every 2 weeks during 16 months (N = 33) in Tissawewa, a tropical shallow reservoir in the lowlands of south-east Sri Lanka. Results are interpreted in relation to selected environmental conditions such as oxygen concentrations, water temperature, Secchi-disc depth, wind force, conductivity, and morphoedaphic index and water level fluctuations. Because of regularly reoccurring high wind speeds the water column is well mixed. Daily gross primary production per unit area was plotted as a function of the algal biomass per unit area over the euphotic zone. Chlorophyll-a concentration in the euphotic zone was taken as measure for the algal biomass. The literature comparisons showed that the primary productivity in Tissawewa was in the same range as in 29 tropical lakes and reservoirs, of which 27 were from Africa. The productivity of these 30 tropical lakes and reservoirs was compared with: (a) 27 lakes of which 25 were temperate lakes, and (b) 49 North American temperate lakes. Firstly, comparisons were made on an annual basis for the tropical water bodies, but restricted to May–September, the growing season, for temperate water bodies. The gross primary productivity of tropical water bodies was ca. three times higher than that of temperate water bodies. These differences were even more dramatic if the two geographical regions are compared on an annual basis, i.e. the tropical systems are ca. six times more productive than their temperate counterpart.  相似文献

Plankton were sampled for 6 years in a subtropical eutrophiclake in FL, USA, and absolute and relative carbon biomass wasdetermined for bacteria, phytoplankton, heterotrophic and phototrophicnanoflagellates, ciliates, rotifers and crustacean zooplankton. We compared the results with findings from a comprehensive studyof carbon biomass partitioning in eutrophic German lakes withelucidate common patterns and differences. Similarities betweenthe temperate and subtropical systems included: similar seasonaldynamics, with maximal carbon biomass of nanoflagellates andmetazoan zooplankton in spring and phytoplankton in summer toautumn, yearly averaged carbon occurring mainly in the phytoplanktonand phytoplankton accounting for a much greater proportion ofcarbon than bacteria. There also were differences: the Floridalake had lower absolute and relative carbon biomass in crustaceanzooplankton, stronger dominance of protozoa in total grazercarbon biomass, a lower ratio of zooplankton to phytoplanktoncarbon and almost a monoculture of predation-resistant copepods(versus a relatively balanced distribution of carbon among cladocerans, copepods and rotifers in the temperate lakes). The subtropicallake also had 4-fold higher relative biomass of small filamentouscyanobacteria in its phytoplankton, which we attribute to lightlimitation. Although the Florida and German studies did notmeasure biomass of planktivorous fish, the differences observedhere are consistent with a recent hypothesis that fish predationexerts stronger top–down control on the pelagic food webin subtropical lakes than in temperate lakes of similar trophicstatus.  相似文献

Psathyrella hypertropicalis, a new species, is described from a high mountain (Cofre de Perote) in the State of Veracruz, Mexico above the subtropical zone. This species is intermediate betweenP. velutina of the temperate regions andP. sepulchralis from the subtropical regions of Mexico. A list of the 26 species ofPsathyrella of Mexico is presented, of which 21 are from the tropics and subtropics, three from the temperate regions (P. velutina, P. spadicea, andP. hypertropicalis), and two with a broad distribution (P. candolleana andP. disseminata). Eleven are only known from Mexico.  相似文献

AIMS: Desmodia are leguminous plants used as important forage and herbal medicine in China. Little information is available about the nodule bacteria of Desmodium species. To understand the genetic diversity of rhizobia associated with Desmodium species grown in China, isolates from temperate and subtropical regions were obtained and analysed. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 39 rhizobial strains isolated from 9 Desmodium species grown in China were characterized by PCR-based 16S rDNA gene and 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer gene restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed high diversity among rhizobia symbiotic with Desmodium species. Most microsymbionts of Desmodium species belonged to Bradyrhizobium closely related to Bradyrhizobium elkanii, Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Bradyrhizobium yuanmingense. Several small groups or single strain were related to Rhizobium, Sinorhizobium or Mesorhizobium. CONCLUSIONS: Desmodium species formed nodules with diverse rhizobia in Chinese soils. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These results offered the first systematic information about the microsymbionts of desmodia grown in the temperate and subtropical regions of China.  相似文献

A total of 38 taxa of scaled chrysophytes, representing seven genera, were observed in the surface sediments of eleven lakes in Vermont and New Hampshire, USA. The number of taxa found per lake ranged from 10 to 23, with greater diversity and abundances of scales in the New Hampshire localities. The flora was similar to those described from other temperate regions of North America and Europe. The flora described from the New Hampshire waterbodies was typical of those observed in slightly acidic, dilute lakes situated in primarily forested watersheds. The flora observed in the Vermont lakes was more typical of ones previously described from regions rich in waterbodies with both high pH and concentrations of dissolved salts. The occurrences of several rarely reported species in North America, including Mallomonas alata, M. parvulu, M. retrorsu. and Synura lapponica , are documented. It was also determined that paleolimnological inference models developed in Connecticut for pH, specific conductivity and trophic score worked well using the scale remains from the study lakes.  相似文献

In tropical lakes relatively little is known about the general relationship between nutrient concentration and phytoplankton biomass. Using data from 192 lakes from tropical and subtropical regions we examine the relationship between total P (TP) and chlorophyll (Chl). The lakes are all located between 30° S to 31° N include systems in Asia, Africa, and North and South America but are dominated by Brazilian (n=79) and subtropical N. American (n=67) systems. The systems vary in morphometry (mean depth and lake area), trophic state as well total N (TN) to␣total P (TP) ratios and light extinction. Despite a nearly 500-fold range in TP concentrations (2–970 μg P l−1), there was a poorer relationship between log TP and log Chl (r 2=0.42) than is generally observed for temperate systems from either narrow or broad geographic regions. N limitation is not a likely explanation for the relatively weak TP–Chl relationship in the tropical–subtropical systems. Systems had high average TN:TP ratios and neither a multiple regression with log TP and log TN nor separating systems with high TN:TP (>17 by weight) improved the predictive power of the log TP–log Chl relationship.  相似文献
