Spatial distribution (SD) of White Sea intertidal soft-bottom communities was studied at scales from decimetres to dozens of kilometres on the basis of an extensive dataset (464 samples of macrofauna, 349 samples of ciliates, and 333 samples of diatoms). We used the information index of structural heterogeneity D(I) (Azovsky et al., 2000 // Mar. Biol. 136 (3): 581-590) to characterize spatial variability in the species composition of the communities at different extent (total area surveyed) and grain (finest spatial resolution). The type of distribution was determined via the relation between D(I) and parameters of the spatial scale (extent and grain). At small scale (in terms of extent), all the communities were distributed randomly (mosaic SD). At larger scales, the estimated spatial variability depended neither on extent nor grain, exclusively on their ratio, i.e., was scale-invariant. This means that at some scale the spatial patterns of communities display self-similar properties (fractal SD). Such SD was found at a rather wide range of scales scales: 10(1)-10(4) m for the macrofauna, 10(0)-10(3) m for the ciliates, and 10(-1)-10(2) m for the diatoms. At still greater scales, patchy or gradient patters were observed. Thus, the ranges of fractal distribution were proportional to the average size of the organisms (approximately 10(4)-10(7) times the body size). We suppose that such spatial pattern reflects community self-organization in a relatively homogeneous environment and may be the most efficient way to realize the highest structural diversity on the basis of pre-formed complexes of predominant species. The attachment rates of wild-type, smooth-swimming, tumbly, and paralyzed Escherichia coli to glass was measured at fluid velocities of 0.0044 and 0.044 cms(-1) (corresponding to shear rates of 0.34 and 3.4 s(-1), respectively), in 0.02 and 0.2 M buffer solutions. At the highest ionic strength, we did not observe a significant difference in the attachment rate of wild-type and paralyzed cells at either fluid velocity. However, when the ionic strength was reduced, paralyzed bacteria attached at rates 4 and 10 times lower than that of the wild type under fluid velocities of 0.0044 and 0.044 cms(-1), respectively. This suggested that the rotation of the flagella assisted in attachment. We then compared the attachment rates of smooth-swimming (counterclockwise rotation only) and tumbly (clockwise rotation only) cells to the wild type to determine whether the direction of rotation was important to cell attachment. At 0.0044 cms(-1), the smooth-swimming cells attached at rates similar to that of the wild type in both buffer solutions but significantly less at the higher fluid velocity. Tumbly cells attached at much lower rates under all conditions. Thus, the combination of clockwise and counterclockwise flagellar rotation and their coupling appeared to be important in cell attachment. We considered a number of hypotheses to interpret these observations, including a residence time analysis and a comparison of traditional Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory to soft-particle theory.  相似文献

The effect of fluid flow and laminar shear on bacterial uptake was examined under conditions representative of the fluid environment of unattached and attached cells in wastewater treatment bioreactors. Laminar shear rates below 50 s(-1) did not increase leucine uptake by suspended cultures of Zoogloea ramigera. However, leucine uptake by cells fixed in a flow field of approximately 1 mm s(-1) was 55-65% greater than uptake by suspended cells. Enhanced microbial uptake with advective motion is consistent with mass transfer rates calculated using Sherwood number correlations. Advective flow increases microbial uptake by increasing collisions between substrate molecules and cells through compression of the concentration boundary layer surrounding a cell. The rate of leucine uptake suggests that binding proteins used to transport leucine into the cell can occupy approximately 1% of the cell surface area.  相似文献

The growth and survival of larvae can be significantly enhanced through close association with patches of high prey concentration. However, the taxis and kinesis responses used by larvae to locate and maintain residence in micro-patches remains poorly understood. In this study, the behavioral responses of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) and walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) larvae (45–100 dph) to light, prey scent, and prey were examined. Both species displayed an ontogenetic shift in response to a horizontal light gradient, with small larvae (11–13 mm SL) exhibiting a positive phototaxis and large larvae (23–32 mm SL) exhibiting a negative phototaxis. Whether this reversal is related to ontogenetically appropriate foraging cues or some other aspect of the environment remains to be determined. Neither species displayed significant behavioral responsiveness to the introduction of olfactory prey cues at either size. The aggregating (taxis) response of large larvae to introduction of live prey was stronger than that of small larvae, possibly due to increased reaction distances and encounter rates. In addition, both species exhibited a kinesis response of reducing the frequency of swimming bouts in response to introduction of live prey. These results suggest that the scale of prey patchiness and the physical factors that determine patch encounter rates are a significant determinant of larval growth and survival in the early feeding stages of marine fishes.  相似文献

AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of six bacterial strains on gilthead sea bream larvae (Sparus aurata). METHODS AND RESULTS: Six bacterial strains isolated from well-performing live food cultures were identified by sequencing fragments of their 16s rDNA genome to the genus level as Cytophaga sp., Roseobacter sp., Ruergeria sp., Paracoccus sp., Aeromonas sp. and Shewanella sp. Survival rates of gilthead sea bream larvae transferred to seawater added these bacterial strains at concentrations of 6 +/- 0.3 x 10(5) bacteria ml(-1) were similar to those of larvae transferred to sterilized seawater and showed an average of 86% at 9 days after hatching, whereas, survival rates of larvae transferred to filtered seawater were lower (P < 0.05), and showed an average of 39%, 9 days after hatching. CONCLUSION: Several bacterial strains isolated from well-performing live food cultures showed a positive effect for sea bream larvae when compared with filtered seawater. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The approach used in this study could be applied as an in vivo evaluation method of candidate probiotic strains used in the rearing of marine fish larvae.  相似文献

Milkfish fry with an average standard length and weight of 13.88 mm and 3.95 mg, respectively, were reared for 30 days using live and frozen Moina macrocopa and Brachionusplicatilis at feeding densities of 10–20 individuals per ml. Growth, survival and yield were used as indicators of the overall performances of the various treatment groups. Fry fed live M. macrocopa showed gains (both length and weight), growth and survival rates and yields significantly higher than fry fed with other treatment groups (P < 0.05). However, significant reductions in growth and survival rates resulted when fry were fed frozen M. macrocopa. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in growth and survival rates (P < 0.05) in fry fed live or frozen B. plicatilis. The results of the current study showed that although milkfish fry could be grown successfully using B. plicatilis, feeding with live Moina significantly improved growth, survival rate and yield (P lt; 0.05). Frozen Moina was found to be unsuitable as a feed for rearing milkfish fry because it reduced growth rates and increased mortality. Comparisons between live and frozen rotifers have proven the suitability of frozen rotifers as feed for rearing milkfish fry. By freezing surplus rotifers this would permit short term storage in anticipation of high hatchery demand and overcome any unpredictable failures with live cultures.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to determine the effect of immunization of channel catfish with inactivated trophonts on serum and cutaneous antibody titers and survival against Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet (Ich). In trial I, catfish were immunized intraperitoneally (IP) with: 1) 1% formalin-inactivated trophonts, 2) 3% formalin-inactivated trophonts and 3) freeze-thawed trophonts. Positive and negative control catfish were immunized with live theronts and 5% bovine serum albumin (BSA), respectively. At day 14, 28 and 50 post-immunizations, no statistical difference was noted in serum or cutaneous anti-Ich antibody titers to formalin-inactivated trophonts or freeze-thawed trophonts. The survival of catfish challenged with live theronts ranged from 33.3% to 43.3% for the formalin-inactivated or freeze-thawed trophonts at 50 d post-immunization. The survival of catfish immunized with live theront and BSA was 93.3 and 0%, respectively. In trial II, catfish were IP immunized with sonicated trophonts at doses of 1) 5 trophonts or 10.2 microg protein g(-1) fish, 2) 10 trophonts or 20.4 microg protein g(-1) fish, 3) 20 trophonts or 40.8 microg protein g(-1) fish, and 4) 5% BSA as the control. Fish immunized with 10 or 20 trophonts g(-1) fish showed highest serum (1/210 to 1/480) and cutaneous antibody titers (1/48 to 1/52), respectively, at 22 d post-immunization and survival (63.3-60.0%). The fish immunized with 5 trophonts g(-1) fish had titers of 1/52 and 1/12 for serum and cutaneous antibody and survival of 23.3%. BSA immunized catfish had background titers and a survival of 6.7%. There was a significant correlation between doses of sonicated trophonts used to immunize and catfish survival (correlation coefficient = 0.859, p < 0.01). These results indicate that doses of sonicated trophonts, but not formalin-inactivated or freeze-thawed trophonts provided both serum and cutaneous antibody responses and survival to live trophont challenge.  相似文献

Copepods may lack the capacity for de novo synthesis of cholesterol, while at the same time their dietary levels of sterol vary. We tested the hypothesis that copepods maintain the cholesterol contents of their biological membranes despite varying dietary levels of cholesterol. Acartia hudsonica were acclimated for 5 d to phytoplankton alone or phytoplankton supplemented with cholesterol, at a level sufficient to induce a maximal response on egg production rates. Biological membranes were prepared from the copepods and cholesterol contents assayed. Egg production and hatch rates were measured (the former to confirm that supplemented cholesterol was being assimilated). Analyses of marker enzymes indicate that the majority of membrane-associated cholesterol in the copepod resides in the plasma membrane. In membranes fractions, cholesterol normalized to protein or activity of Na+/K+-ATPase is not significantly different for supplemented and unsupplemented groups (29 and 33 mu g cholesterol mg(-1) protein, respectively; 0.24 and 0.25 mg cholesterol U(-1) Na+/K+-ATPase, respectively). At the same time, acclimating animals to a diet enriched with cholesterol enhances egg production by up to 1.8-fold and egg viability by 1.5-fold. We conclude that a cholesterol-enriched diet stimulates both egg production and hatching rates without altering cholesterol contents of plasma membranes in the copepod A. hudsonica.  相似文献

Abstract. Rates of desiccation, rehydration and survival, under conditions of 0 and 100% relative humidity, were investigated in the high arctic collembolan Onychiurus arcticus (Tullberg) over a range of temperatures from -3 to 10C. Desiccation, measured over 4h in a dry environment, was rapid and highly significantly correlated with saturated vapour pressure deficit (SVPD). At 10C animals lost over 60% of body moisture in under 1h. Under moist conditions body weight remained constant. Survival, measured over 4h under dry conditions, showed a highly significant negative correlation with SVPD across the range of temperatures. Survival in moist controls was 100%. Partially desiccated animals were able to rehydrate using free water or moisture from a saturated atmosphere, but uptake of the former was faster. Rates of water uptake were around 30 times slower than rates of loss through desiccation. Animals given free water regained initial weights in 24-144h, dependent on temperature. Uptake rates of free water, measured over the time necessary fully to rehydrate, were highly significantly correlated with temperature, whereas those for atmospheric moisture were not. Over the time scales used in the experiments, three linear regression equations accurately predict rates of desiccation, rehydration and survival from SVPD or temperature. Ecological adaptation by O.arcticus to the highly contrasting climatic environments of the arctic summer and winter seasons is discussed in the context of climate change.  相似文献

Human disease caused by Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a function of the number of cells that are present at potential sites of infection and host susceptibility. Such infectious doses are a result, in part, of the quantity of cells that are ingested and that survive human host defenses, such as the low-pH environment of the stomach. To more fully understand the kinetics of E. coli O157:H7 survival in gastric fluid, individual E. coli O157:H7 strains were suspended in various media (i.e., saline, cooked ground beef [CGB], and CGB containing a commercial antacid product [CGB+A]), mixed at various proportions with simulated human gastric fluid (SGF), and then incubated at 37 degrees C for up to 4 h. The highest inactivation rate among nine E. coli O157:H7 strains was observed in saline. Specifically, the average survival rates in 100:1 and 10:1 proportions of SGF-saline were -1.344 +/- 0.564 and -0.997 +/- 0.388 log(10) CFU/h, respectively. In contrast, the average inactivation rate for 10 E. coli O157:H7 strains suspended in 10:1 SGF-CGB was -0.081 +/- 0.068, a rate that was 12-fold lower than that observed for SGF-saline. In comparison, the average inactivation rate for Shigella flexneri strain 5348 in 100:1 and 10:1 SGF-saline was -8.784 and -17.310, respectively. These latter inactivation rates were 7- to 17-fold higher than those for E. coli O157:H7 strains in SGF-saline and were 4-fold higher than those for E. coli O157:H7 strains in SGF-CGB. The survival rate of E. coli O157:H7 strain GFP80EC increased as the dose of antacid increased from one-half to twice the prescribed dose. A similar trend was observed for the matrix pH over the range of pH 1.6 to 5.7, indicating that pH is a primary factor affecting E. coli O157:H7 survival in SGF-CGB+A. These results can be used in risk assessment to define dose-response relationships for E. coli O157:H7 and to evaluate potential surrogate organisms.  相似文献

为了全面评价冷贮对米蛾Corcyra cephalonica Stainton卵繁育螟黄赤眼蜂Trichogramma chilonis Ishii的影响, 本试验采用米蛾卵为寄主, 以冷贮温度(3和10℃)、 冷贮虫龄(以接蜂开始时间为起点, 接蜂后1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8和9日龄)和冷贮时间(1, 2, 3和4周)为试验因子, 研究了冷贮对螟黄赤眼蜂活蛹率、 羽化率和畸形率的影响。结果表明: 3个因素均能单独或互作显著影响活蛹率、 羽化率和畸形率(P<0.05)。综合各冷贮虫龄对低温的反应, 螟黄赤眼蜂对3℃较敏感, 此温度下1-3日龄的活蛹率和各虫龄的羽化率均显著下降(P<0.05), 不适宜长期冷贮; 10℃下各虫龄的活蛹率受冷贮时间的影响不显著, 1-3日龄的羽化率受冷贮时间的影响也不显著, 冷贮4周后仍有74%以上的羽化率, 10℃适宜冷贮。不同冷贮温度下冷贮适宜虫龄不同。在10℃下, 最适冷贮虫龄是3日龄的赤眼蜂, 此虫龄不同冷贮时间的活蛹率(74.09%~77.59%)和羽化率(74.26%~90.37%)均与对照无显著差异(P>0.05), 但显著高于其他虫龄(P<0.05)。此虫龄在10℃下冷贮1~3周, 畸形率在27%以内。结果表明米蛾卵内螟黄赤眼蜂不同冷贮温度下适宜冷贮虫龄不同。  相似文献

Many of the physiological functions of von Willebrand Factor (VWF), including its binding interaction with blood platelets, are regulated by the magnitude of applied fluid/hydrodynamic stress. We applied two complementary strategies to study the effect of fluid forces on the solution structure of VWF. First, small-angle neutron scattering was used to measure protein conformation changes in response to laminar shear rates (G) up to 3000/s. Here, purified VWF was sheared in a quartz Couette cell and protein conformation was measured in real time over length scales from 2-140 nm. Second, changes in VWF structure up to 9600/s were quantified by measuring the binding of a fluorescent probe 1,1′-bis(anilino)-4-,4′-bis(naphtalene)-8,8′-disulfonate (bis-ANS) to hydrophobic pockets exposed in the sheared protein. Small angle neutron scattering studies, coupled with quantitative modeling, showed that VWF undergoes structural changes at G < 3000/s. These changes were most prominent at length scales <10 nm (scattering vector (q) range >0.6/nm). A mathematical model attributes these changes to the rearrangement of domain level features within the globular section of the protein. Studies with bis-ANS demonstrated marked increase in bis-ANS binding at G > 2300/s. Together, the data suggest that local rearrangements at the domain level may precede changes at larger-length scales that accompany exposure of protein hydrophobic pockets. Changes in VWF conformation reported here likely regulate protein function in response to fluid shear.  相似文献

Survival of the cystophorous cercariae of Halipegus occidualis (Trematoda: Hemiuridae) from naturally infected Helisoma anceps (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) was determined following constant temperature storage at 4, 16, 22, 26 and 30 degrees C. At 4 degrees C, 90% of cercariae survived for 14 weeks and 50% survived for 30 weeks. Survival varied inversely with temperature, and at 30 degrees, 90% survived for 1.5 weeks and 50% survived for 2.5 weeks. At the time of release from snails, cercariae excysted within 0.5 s of stimulation. Excystment times ultimately increased to 1-3 s at all temperatures as length of storage increased, but no connection was detected between excystment time and the activity of the cercaria. Excystment times began increasing while survival was still above 90%. Temperature specific mortality rates of cercariae were estimated, and used to simulate the survival of cercariae released naturally at various times of the year. The results of these simulations suggest that cercariae of H. occidualis are present in the environment at all times of the year, but that cercariae present in late winter (January to mid-March) may have an impaired excystment mechanism that reduces their infectivity.  相似文献

Few studies have been conducted in Japan on the relationship between sports and the length of human life, i.e. the life-prolonging effect of exercise. In this paper, we conducted such research on 3,113 male graduates of a national university having a faculty of physical education. The subjects were divided according to their academic majors, which included physical education, humanities, and science courses. The following results were obtained: 1) Comparison of ages at death showed that physical education majors were distinctly represented in lower age groups. 2) Comparison of average ages at death by dividing the subjects into 20-year intervals according to their years of birth, revealed that physical education majors do not necessarily live longer and tend to die relatively young. 3) Comparison of average ages at death, including death by war, indicated that physical education majors lived 8.572 and 7.792 years less than humanities and science course majors, respectively. When death by war was excluded, the results were 6.189 and 5.548 years, respectively. Both results were statistically significant. 4) Comparison of cumulative survival rates utilizing Cutler-Ederer method showed that the rates of survival of physical education majors were low.  相似文献

1. The physical composition of the semen of Barbus aeneus (smallmouth yellowfish) was determined. 2. The mean values and standard deviations for some of the physical properties were as follows: sperm count = 8.41 x 10(6)/mm3 +/- 2.55; percentage live cells = 92.5% +/- 9.92; spermatocrit = 61.9% +/- 5.74 and the total motility = 65 +/- 8.95. Tow types of dose-rate effect that alter the survival response of haploid yeast cells to 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) plus treatment with irradiation at 365 nm were studied. (1) When the concentration of 8-MOP was varied between 9.2 X 10(-5) and 2.3 X 10(-8) M and the dose rate of 365-nm irradiation kept constant, the efficiency of the irradiation for killing increased relatively to that of 8-MOP whe the concentration of 8-MOP decreased. This indicated that there was no strict reciprocity between radiation dose and concentration of drug. (2) When the dose rate of radiation was varied between 0.66 X 10(3) and 108 X 10(3) J m-2 h-1 and the concentration of 8-MOP was kept constant, the survival of wild-type cells increased strikingly at low dose rates of radiation as compared with high dose rates. Cells responded more to changes at low dose rates than to equal changes a high dose rates. The high resistance of wild-type cells to 8-MOP plus radiation delivered at low dose rates absent from rad 1-3 cells defective in excision-repair. This suggests that the dose-rate effect seen in wild-type cells depended at least in part on an active excision-repair function. At low dose rates of radiation, the shoulder of the survival curve for rad1-3 cells, i.e. the ability to accumulate sub-lethal damage, was increased by a factor of about 2 when compared with that seen at a high dose rate. Thus it is likely that at low dose rates a repair function other than excision-resynthesis may operate in rad1-3 cells.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments revealed distinct effects of turbidity on the survival of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus larvae when exposed to either visual (jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus) or tactile (moon jellyfish Aurelia aurita) predators. The experiments were conducted in 30 l tanks with three levels of turbidity obtained by dissolving 0, 50 or 300 mg l(-1) of kaolin. Predators were introduced to experimental tanks followed by larvae of E. japonicus ranging from 5 to 25 mm standard lengths (L(s) ). When exposed to T. japonicus, the mean survival rate of larvae was significantly higher in 300 mg l(-1) treatments compared to the other turbidity levels. When exposed to A. aurita, however, there was no difference in the survival rates among different turbidity treatments. The survival rates when exposed to either predator improved with larval growth. The logistic survivorship models for E. japonicus larvae when exposed to A. aurita had an inflection point at c. 12 mm L(s) , suggesting that their size refuge from A. aurita is close to this value. Comparison to a previous study suggests a high vulnerability of shirasu (long and transparent) fish larvae to jellyfish predation under turbidity. This study indicates that anthropogenic increases of turbidity in coastal waters may increase the relative effect of jellyfish predation on fish larvae.  相似文献

The present 20‐day trial was performed in order to improve growth of tench Tinca tinca (L.) larvae reared intensively in a controlled environment. Larvae of 4.53 mm initial length, 45 per dm3, were fed each day with live Artemia nauplii for 12, 18 or 24 h at 28°C. Final survival rates were very high in all treatment groups, ranging from 88.9 to 91.8%. Duration of daily feeding significantly affected growth and final condition, expressed by Fulton's coefficient (K) (P ≤ 0.05, Duncan's test). The fastest larval growth (17.6 mm total length, TL; 88.8 mg body weight, BW) and the best condition (K = 1.54) were recorded in the group fed 24 h each day. The second best results were attained with the larvae fed 18 h a day (16.5 mm TL, 67.9 mg BW, K = 1.40) whereas those fed 12 h daily grew the slowest (13.5 mm TL, 31.7 mg BW) and showed the worst condition (K = 1.19). Thus, to maximize growth and condition of tench larvae being reared at the optimal growth temperature, intensive 24 h feeding is necessary.  相似文献

1. In order to study and predict population distribution, it is crucial to identify and understand factors affecting individual movement decisions at different scales. Movements of foraging animals should be adjusted to the hierarchical spatial distribution of resources in the environment and this scale-dependent response to environmental heterogeneity should differ according to the forager's characteristics and exploited habitats. 2. Using First-Passage Time analysis, we studied scales of search effort and habitat used by individuals of seven sympatric Indian Ocean Procellariiform species fitted with satellite transmitters. We characterized their search effort distribution and examined whether species differ in scale-dependent adjustments of their movements according to the marine environment exploited. 3. All species and almost all individuals (91% of 122 individuals) exhibited an Area-Restricted Search (ARS) during foraging. At a regional scale (1000s km), foraging ranges showed a large spatial overlap between species. At a smaller scale (100s km, at which an increase in search effort occurred), a segregation in environmental characteristics of ARS zones (where search effort is high) was found between species. 4. Spatial scales at which individuals increased their search effort differed between species and also between exploited habitats, indicating a similar movement adjustment for predators foraging in the same habitat. ARS zones of the two populations of wandering albatross Diomedea exulans (Crozet and Kerguelen) were similar in their adjustments (i.e. same ARS scale) as well as in their environmental characteristics. These two populations showed a weak spatial overlap in their foraging distribution, with males foraging in more southerly waters than females in both populations. 5. This study demonstrates that predators of several species adjust their foraging behaviour to the heterogeneous environment and these scale-dependent movement adjustments depend on both forager and environment characteristics.  相似文献
