Synopsis Important differences were observed in the early ontogenies ofLucania parva andLucania goodei. These differences can be explained in terms of the altricial-precocial model of speciation.Lucania parva can be recognized as an altricial form that produces many eggs with relatively little yolk investment, compared to the more precocialL. goodei. Many of the differences observed in embryo, larva and juvenile specimens appear to be related to these differences in gamete investment. Accelerated developmental rates in the precocial form suggest that paedomorphosis is an important proximate mechanism in the bifurcation of alternative life-history styles in this genus. Some morphological characteristics, such as vitelline circulation and body shape, may be transformations associated with the particular environmental conditions in which the animals must develop and survive. Our observations suggest that these two species in the genusLucania have followed different ontogenic trajectories in response to prevailing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Lack of knowledge of early and juvenile development often makes it difficult to decide when a fish becomes a juvenile or, for that matter, a definitive phenotype. According to the established life-history model, a fish develops naturally in a saltatory manner, its entire life consisting of a sequence of stabilized self-organizing steps, separated by distinct less stabilized thresholds. Changes are usually introduced during thresholds. In principle, there are two ways to reach the juvenile period: by indirect or by direct development. Indirectly developing fishes have a distinct larva period that ends in a cataclysmic or mild remodeling process, called metamorphosis, from which the fishes emerge as juveniles. During metamorphosis, most temporary organs and structures of the embryos and larvae are replaced by definitive organs and structures that are also possessed by the adults. In contrast, directly developing fishes have no larvae. Their embryos develop directly into juveniles and do not need major remodeling. Consequently, the beginning of their juvenile period is morphologically and functionally less distinct than in indirect development. The life-history model helps to find criteria that identify the natural boundaries between the different periods in the life of a fish, among them, the beginning of the juvenile period. Looking at it from a different angle, when ontogeny progresses from small eggs with little yolk, larvae are required as the necessary providers of additional nutrients (feeding entities similar to amphibian tadpoles or butterfly caterpillars) in order to accumulate materials for the metamorphosis into the definitive phenotypes. Directly developing fishes start with large demersal eggs provided with an adequate volume of high density yolk and so require no or little external nutrients to develop into the definitive phenotype. These large eggs are released and develop in concentrated clutches. It therefore becomes possible and highly effective to guard them in nests or bear them in external pouches, gill chambers or the buccal cavity. Viviparity is the next natural step. Now the maternal investment into large yolks can be supplemented or replaced by direct food supply to the developing embryos like, for example, the secretion of uterine histotrophe or nutrient transfer via placental analogues. When the young of guarders and bearers start exogenous feeding, they are much larger or better developed than larvae of nonguarders and the larva period in the former is reduced to a vestige or eliminated entirely. In the latter case, the juvenile period begins with the first exogenous feeding. Such precocial fishes are more specialized and able to survive better in competitive environments. In contrast, altricial forms retain or revert to a life-history style with indirect development and high fecundity when dispersal is advantageous or essential. Fishes become juveniles when the definitive phenotype is formed in most structures, either indirectly from a larva via metamorphosis or directly from the embryo.  相似文献

The origin of and evolutionary transitions among the extraordinary diverse forms of parental care in teleost fish remain largely unknown. The "safe harbor" hypothesis predicts that the evolution from a "guarding" to a "brooding" form of care in teleost fish is associated with shifts in reproductive and life-history features such as reduced fecundity, and increased egg volume with higher parental investment. Robust phylogenetic hypotheses may help to identify evolutionary changes in key traits associated with differences in the form of parental care. Here, we used reconstruction of ancestral character states to study the evolution of the two forms of parental care, bubble nesting and mouthbrooding in the fighting fish genus Betta. We also applied a comparative analysis using the phylogenetic generalized least-squares method to test the "safe harbor" hypothesis by evaluating differences between the two forms of parental care in standard length, life-history traits, and three habitat variables. Evolutionary hypotheses were derived from the first molecular phylogeny (nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequence data; 4448 bp) of this speciose group. Ancestral character state reconstructions of the evolution of the form of parental care in the genus Betta, using the methods of unweighted parsimony and maximum likelihood, are uncertain and further indicate a high rate of evolutionary transitions. Applying different weights for the suspected directionality of changes, based on the consistent phenotypic and behavioral differences found between bubble nesters and mouthbrooders, recurrent origin of mouthbrooding in the genus Betta is favored using parsimony. Our comparative analyses further demonstrate that bubble nesters and mouthbrooders do not have a consistent set of life-history correlates. The form of parental care in Betta is correlated only with offspring size, with mouthbrooders having significantly bigger offspring than bubble nesters, but is not correlated with egg volume, clutch size, and broodcare duration, nor with any of the three habitat variables tested. Our results thus challenge the general predictions of the "safe harbor" hypothesis for the evolution of alternative brood care forms in the fighting fish genus Betta.  相似文献

Synopsis We report on unique reproductive behaviour and a new mode of egg insemination in a small catfish Corydoras aeneus (Callichthyidae). A male courts a female by presenting his abdomen to her. Before releasing eggs, the female attaches her mouth to the male's genital opening and directly drinks his sperm. The sperm pass through her intestine and are discharged together with eggs into the pouch formed by her pelvic fins. Thus, eggs are mixed with fresh non-dispersed sperm in an enclosed space, ensuring effective insemination. This mode of insemination is novel to fishes, but is likely not restricted to catfishes of the genus Corydoras.  相似文献

Maternally inherited bacterial endosymbionts can kill male embryos of their arthropod hosts to enhance the transmission efficiency of the endosymbionts. The resources from killed male eggs can be reallocated to infected female hatchlings as additional maternal investment. As a result, the number of offspring per patch and the maternal investment per offspring are expected to differ from the original optimal values for the host mother. Thus, in response to infection, these trait values should be adjusted to maximize the lifetime reproductive success of host females and the fitness of inherited endosymbionts as well. Here, we examined clutch size, egg size, and the proportion of trophic eggs (i.e., production of unhatched eggs, a maternal phenotype) per clutch of host mothers infected with male-killing bacteria. First, we developed a mathematical model to predict the optimal clutch size and trophic egg proportion in uninfected and infected females. Next, we experimentally compared these life-history traits in a ladybird, Harmonia yedoensis, between females infected or uninfected with male-killing Spiroplasma bacteria. Consistent with our predictions, clutch size was larger, egg size was smaller, and trophic egg proportion was lower in infected H. yedoensis females, compared with uninfected females. To our knowledge, this is the first empirical demonstration of variation in these life-history traits depending on infection with bacterial endosymbionts.  相似文献

Empirical links between egg size and duration of parental care in fishes have generated a considerable amount of theory concerning life history evolution. However, to date, this link has not been investigated in relation to other important life-history traits such as clutch size and body size, or while controlling for shared ancestry between species. We provide the first phylogenetically based tests using a database with information on egg size, clutch size, body size and care duration in cichlid fishes (Cichlidae). Multiple regression analyses, based on independent contrasts on both the species and the genus level, showed that clutch size is the variable most closely related to duration of care. This pattern appeared to be driven by post-hatch care relationships. Our results show that, contrary to expectation, there is no positive link between egg size and care duration in Cichlidae. Instead, greater reproductive output through increased clutch size investment appears to have coevolved with greater care of offspring. We suggest that re-evaluation of the generality of current models of the evolution of egg size under parental care in fishes is needed.  相似文献

From some life-history traits, avian egg size can be postulated as potentially affected by climate change. In this paper, we present and discuss the potential effect of mean temperature in the breeding season on egg size of the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio). During the 1971–2002 study period, egg volume of the red-backed shrike decreased significantly, birds arrived at the breeding site significantly earlier, and arrival date was correlated with the earliest first egg date. To our knowledge, we present the first evidence that avian egg size decreased significantly in a long-term study. However, we do not have experimental manipulations in support of our data and we can only conclude that the decrease in egg volume in the studied population might result as a consequence of a number of factors, including changes in temperature, as well as in food supply. Therefore climate change effects on a birds life-history traits can be more complex than just the simple direct effect of temperature.Communicated by F. Bairlein  相似文献

Background

As egg production and offspring care are costly, females should invest resources adaptively into their eggs to optimize current offspring quality and their own lifetime reproductive success. Parasite infections can influence maternal investment decisions due to their multiple negative physiological effects. The act of preening – applying oils with anti-microbial properties to feathers – is thought to be a means by which birds combat pathogens and parasites, but little is known of how preening during the reproductive period (and its expected disease-protecting effects) influences maternal investment decisions at the level of the egg.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here, we experimentally prevented female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) from accessing their preen gland during breeding and monitored female immunoresponsiveness (e.g., plasma lysozyme concentration) as well as some egg traits linked to offspring quality (e.g., egg mass, yolk carotenoid content, and albumen lysozyme levels). Females with no access to their preen gland showed an increase in plasma lysozyme level compared to control, normally preening females. In addition, preen-gland-restricted females laid significantly lighter eggs and deposited higher carotenoid concentrations in the yolk compared to control females. Albumen lysozyme activity did not differ significantly between eggs laid by females with or without preen gland access.

Conclusion/Significance

Our results establish a new link between an important avian self-maintenance behaviour and aspects of maternal health and reproduction. We suggest that higher yolk carotenoid levels in eggs laid by preen-gland-restricted females may serve to boost health of offspring that would hatch in a comparatively microbe-rich environment.  相似文献

The increase of egg mass and reliable decrease of egg fertility were observed when the mass surface area of yolk (egg) increased. The results obtained suggest that, in addition to the number of viable spermatozoa penetrating across the perivitelline membrane within 15–20 min after ovulation, the probability of fertilization depends on the area of egg surface, which approximately corresponds to the area of perivitelline membrane. Apparently, the ratio of receptors numbers and spermatozoa, which contact with them on the germ disc surface, to their number on the non-germ zone decreases with the increase of yolk size. The fertility depression associated with the increased area of perivitelline membrane suggests that the egg yolk size is one of the factors of fertility of the female gametes in terms of both egg content variability and aging.  相似文献

Convergent evolution is characterized by the independent evolution of similar phenotypes within similar selective environments. Previous work on Trinidadian killifish, Rivulus hartii, demonstrated repeatable life-history differences across communities that differ in predation intensity. These studies were performed in rivers located on the south slope of Trinidad's Northern Range Mountains. There exists a parallel series of rivers on the north slope of these mountains. As on the south slope, Rivulus is found across a gradient of fish predation. However, the predatory fish species in north-slope rivers are derived from marine families, whereas south-slope rivers contain a predatory fish fauna characteristic of the South American mainland. If predator-induced mortality and the associated indirect effects are the causal factors selecting for life-history patterns in Rivulus, and these are similar in north- and south-slope rivers, then the specific predatory species should be interchangeable and we would expect convergence of life-history phenotypes across slopes. Here, we characterize the life-history phenotypes of Rivulus from north-slope communities by measuring number of eggs, egg weight, reproductive allotment, reproductive tissue weight, and size at maturity. We find similar patterns of life-history divergence across analogous predator communities. Between slopes, minor differences in Rivulus life-history traits exist and one potential cause of these differences is the abundance of Macrobrachium prawns in north-slope rivers.  相似文献

Upon fertilization, the zebrafish egg undergoes marked physiological and structural changes, one of which involves blastodisc formation. Before fertilization, yolk globules are rounded and the endoplasm extends throughout the oocyte. During blastodisc formation, the yolk globules become angular and the endoplasm is restricted to streamers among the yolk globules. The streamers are oriented in an anterior-posterior axis of the egg. During blastodisc formation the cytoskeleton consists of an extensive array of filamentous structures of variable width in both the cortex as well as within elongate endoplasmic streamers. Although the filamentous components in the cortex and endoplasmic streamers probably include both microfilaments and microtubules, frequently they are somewhat wider than the usual dimensions, and possible reasons for this are suggested. From their arrangement in both the cortex and endoplasm, it seems likely that the components of the cytoskeleton (e.g., microfilaments and microtubules) may provide, through contraction, the major force responsible for the streaming of the endoplasm into the forming blastodisc. It is assumed that the surface tension of the vegetal hemisphere exceeds that of the animal hemisphere, thus forcing, through differential contraction, the endoplasm to flow in the direction of the forming blastodisc. No distinct barrier between the yolk and forming blastodisc was observed. The compressed condition of the larger and many-sided yolk globules could prevent their movement into the blastodisc. Scanning electron microscopy is limited in the resolution with which it can depict the cytoskeleton, but nonetheless it provides useful information about structural interrelationships.  相似文献

This study showed that sex and depth had strong effects on egg cannibalism, whereas water clarity (clear v. tea-stained) had no effect on cannibalism or oviposition in the bluefin killifish Lucania goodei. These results are consistent with the extreme levels of iteroparity in L. goodei where females appear to spread their eggs across multiple locations and depths presumably to avoid egg predation.  相似文献

Life-history theory predicts that increased predation on juvenile age/size-classes favors delayed maturation and decreased reproductive investment. Although this theory has received correlative support, experimental tests in nature are rare. In 1976 and 1981, guppies (Poecilia reticulata) were transplanted into localities that previously only contained a killifish, Rivulus hartii. This situation presents an opportunity to experimentally test this life-history prediction because guppies prey upon young Rivulus. We evaluated the response to selection in Rivulus by measuring phenotypic and genotypic divergence between introduction and upstream "control" localities that lack guppies. Contrary to expectations, Rivulus from the introduction sites evolved earlier maturation and increased reproductive investment within 25 years. Such evolutionary changes parallel previous investigations on natural communities of Rivulus, but do not comply with predictions of age/size-specific theory. Guppies also caused reduced densities and increased growth rates of Rivulus, which are hypothesized indirect effects of predation. Additional life-history theories show that changes in density and growth can interact with predator-induced mortality to alter the predicted trajectory of evolution. We discuss how these latter frameworks improve the fit between theory and evolution in Rivulus.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive and social biology of the sergeant major,Abudefduf saxatilis, was studied for six months in The Living Seas aquarium (the largest aquarium ever constructed). The purpose of the study was to discern possible behavioral differences between captive and wild breeding populations of this species. A total of 350 h of observation were obtained using closed circuit SCUBA, open circuit SCUBA, and remote operated vehicles. Slight differences were observed in the behavior of individuals in the sample population and those seen in wild populations. These differences may be due to the effects of a controlled closed system on the biology of these fishes.  相似文献

Most models of parental investment in offspring assume a trade-off between propagule size and number, and an increasing concave down function relating offspring fitness to propagule size. In this study, we test these two fundamental assumptions, using three closely related species of crickets, Gryllus firmus, G. veletis, and G. pennsylvanicus. Egg weight, 35-day fecundity and 35-day egg biomass were estimated in a population of each species, and the relationships between these reproductive traits and date of egg laying and body size were estimated. The relationships between egg weight and offspring survival were also sought for eggs buried at different depths, soil moistures, and soil types (G. firmus and G. veletis), as well as in the field (G. pennsylvanicus). A trade-off between egg weight and 35-day fecundity was revealed in a multivariate analysis taking into account among-species variation in egg weight and body size. Independent of the environmental conditions affecting the eggs, a positive correlation existed between the number of larvae that emerged from the soil and propagule weight in each species. Therefore, these findings provide partial support for the assumptions considered in the models mentioned above. A single optimal egg size was favored in two out of the three sets of conditions in which the functions relating egg weight to larval survival could be derived. The conditions encountered by the eggs, however, influenced the average survival of the larvae, as well as the shape of the relationship between egg weight and offspring survival. This suggests that cricket eggs frequently face heterogeneous environments with respect to egg and hatchling survival; the implication of habitat heterogeneity on the evolution of an optimal egg size is considered. The relationships between the reproductive components and female age and size, as well as between egg size and variation in cricket life-history, are discussed in an ecological and evolutionary context.  相似文献

Summary. In the queenless ponerine ant genus Diacamma, all workers eclose with a pair of innervated thoracic appendages termed gemmae. The gamergate (= mated egg laying worker) maintains reproductive monopoly by mutilating the gemmae of all eclosing individuals. Such mutilation leads to irreversible behavioural and neurological changes such that the individual lacking gemmae becomes incapable of appropriate sexual calling and mating. In one population related to Diacamma ceylonense from India, Diacamma sp. from Nilgiri (hereafter referred to as nilgiri), gamergates do not mutilate their nestmates and yet maintain reproductive monopoly. To understand what triggers mutilation, we exchanged cocoons between the mutilating D. ceylonense colonies and the non mutilating nilgiri colonies. nilgiri callows were not mutilated even in D. ceylonense colonies while D. ceylonense callows were mutilated even in nilgiri colonies, suggesting that the cues for mutilation originate in the victims (callows), presumably in the gemmae themselves. This finding should facilitate understanding the proximate mechanism and evolutionary significance of mutilation of gemmae as a method of resolution of reproductive conflicts in the genus Diacamma.Received 27 August 2003; revised 26 April 2004; accepted 27 April 2004.  相似文献

Synopsis This is the second of three papers devoted to the interpretation of morphological development in altricial and precocial species within the genus Lucania. The focus of this paper was the early life history of the bluefin killifish,Lucania goodei. Reproductively mature specimens were collected in the run below Newport Spring, north of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Florida. These specimens were transported to the laboratory, where they served as brood stock for specimens described in this study. Offspring were reared under controlled conditions and were described according to the theory of saltatory ontogeny, which gives a sampling design based on morphological, rather than chronological, progression. The morphological development of these offspring is described on the basis of detailed illustrations, photomicrographs, and measurements of mensural and meristic characters. This account of early ontogeny, in combination with a corresponding study on the early ontogeny of the rainwater killifish,L. parva (Crawford & Balon 1994a), establishes the empirical basis for an altricial-precocial life history model (Crawford & Balon 1994b).  相似文献

I used comparative and experimental analysis of egg size in a Sceloporus lizard to examine a fundamental tenet of life-history theory: the presumed trade-offs among offspring number, offspring size, and performance traits related to offspring size that are likely to influence fitness. I analyzed latitudinal and elevational patterns of egg life-history characteristics among populations and experimentally manipulated egg size and hatchling size by removing yolk from the eggs to examine the causal bases of population differences in offspring traits. Mean clutch size among populations increased to the north (seven vs. 12 eggs/clutch, California vs. Washington), whereas egg size decreased (0.65 g vs. 0.40 g). The elevational patterns in southern California paralleled the latitudinal trends. Several offspring life-history traits that are correlated with egg size also varied geographically; these traits included incubation time, hatchling size, growth rate, and hatchling sprint performance. Hatchling viability of experimentally reduced eggs was remarkably high (~70%), even when up to 50% of the yolk was removed. The experimentally reduced eggs and hatchlings demonstrated the degree to which size influences each of the offspring life-history traits considered. Northern eggs hatched sooner, in part because of their small size. Though growth rate is allometrically related to size within each population (i.e., smaller hatchlings grow faster on a mass-specific basis), population differences in growth rate, as measured in the laboratory, are likely to reflect genetic differentiation in the underlying physiology of growth. Moreover, smaller juveniles, because of experimental reduction, had slower sprint speeds than larger juveniles. The slower sprint speed of hatchlings from Washington compared to hatchlings from California is thus largely due to the fact that eggs are smaller in the Washington population. These results provide a basis for interpreting the evolutionary divergence of the suite of traits involved in the evolution of maternal investment per offspring in lizards. For example, evolutionary divergence in some offspring traits functionally related to size (e.g., sprint speed) may be constrained, relative to traits that are determined by other aspects of development or physiology (e.g., growth). I also discuss issues relating to the evolution of maternal investment that could be tested in laboratory and natural populations using experimentally reduced offspring.  相似文献

In many spiralian embryos it has been possible to demonstratethat embryonic development is partially controlled by cytoplasmicfactors located at or in the surface of the fertilized egg andcleaving embryo. In the embryo of the squid Loligo pealei, apattern of developmental information can be demonstrated toexist at the surface, or the egg cortex, of the fertilized butuncleaved embryo. The informational pattern apparently is releasedor activated during the time of the cytoplasmic streaming whichforms the blastodisc. Eventually this developmental informationalpattern is imposed upon the blastoderm cells that come to coverorgan-specific regions of the yolk syncytium which was derivedfrom the egg cortex. Ultrastructural studies demonstrate manyintercellular connections between the yolk syncytium and theblastoderm and between the cells of the blastoderm itself. Duringoogenesis there are regional differences in the follicular syncytiumwhich suggests that the pattern of developmental informationmay arise in the ovary and be retained in a latent state untiltriggered by fertilization.  相似文献
