The population dynamics of all stages of the Cayenne tick, Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius) (Acari: Ixodidae) on horses was evaluated over a period of 2 years in the district of Pedro Leopoldo, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Every 14 days, the left side of 20 horses was brushed for collection of immature stages; counts of adults were also undertaken. Infestation by larvae was detected from April to August, whereas nymphs were observed from June to October. Infestation by adults was detected throughout the year, and the highest population density occurred from September to March. The number of males was always higher than the number of females, but with considerable reduction in the male : female ratio between April and July. It was observed that 25% of the horses carried 41% of the infesting ticks, and 20% carried only 10% of the ticks during the entire period of the study.  相似文献

Histochemical and TEM analysis of the epidermis of Sphenodon punctatus confirms previous histological studies showing that skin-shedding in this relic species involves the periodic production and loss of epidermal generations, as has been well documented in the related Squamata. The generations are basically similar to those that have been described in the latter, and their formation involves a cyclic alternation between beta- and alpha-keratogenesis. The six differences from the previously described squamate condition revealed by this study include: 1) the absence of a well-defined shedding complex; 2) the persistence of plasma membranes throughout the mature beta-layer, including the oberhautchen; 3) the concomitant presence of lipogenic lamellar bodies and PAS-positive mucous granules in most presumptive alpha-keratinizing cells; 4) the presence of the secreted contents of these organelles in the intercellular domains of the three derived tissues, the homologues of the squamate mesos, alpha-, and lacunar cells; 5) the paucity of lamellated lipid deposits in such domains; 6) the presence of keratohyalin-like granules (KHLG) in the presumptive lacunar, clear, and oberhautchen cells. In toto, the absence of many of the precisely definable, different pathways of cytogenesis discernible during squamate epidermal generation production might be interpreted as primitive for lepidosaurs. However, when the evolutionary significance of each of the six differences listed is evaluated separately, it becomes clear that the epidermis of S. punctatus possesses primitive amniote, shared and derived lepidosaurian, and some unique characters. This evaluation further elucidates the concept of a lepidosaurian epidermal generation as a derived manifestation of the sauropsid synapomorphy of vertical alternation of keratin synthesis and shows that further study of keratinocyte differentiation in the tuatara may contribute to our understanding of the origin and evolution of beta-keratinization in sauropsid amniotes.  相似文献

During the preoviposition and oviposition periods of ixodid ticks, the salivary glands degenerate. It is unclear whether this is a necrotic or a programmed cell death event. We used an in situ TUNEL technique to determine if salivary gland degeneration involves apoptosis. Salivary glands were dissected from replete females at days 3, 5, 8, 11, 13, and 33 post-detachment. There were no differences in tick weight at detachment, suggesting that changes were not due to engorgement abnormalities. The onset of apoptosis began at day 5 and continued through oviposition at day 33. The greatest amount of nuclei containing fragmented DNA was observed on day 8 post-detachment, suggesting this was the peak occurrence of programmed cell death. Further, the temporal organization of programmed cell death suggests that the granule-secreting acini undergo apoptosis first, and that during the first week of oviposition the type I acini do not exhibit programmed cell death. These data suggest that the type I acini may still function in maintaining off-host hydration state of ovipositing females. These data provide morphological evidence that salivary gland degeneration involves a temporal programmed cell death event.  相似文献

The process responsible for the formation of genetically distinct populations associated with different host species is known as host-associated differentiation (HAD). Many insect parasites of plants have been shown to exhibit HAD but there have been fewer studies of HAD in parasites of vertebrate animals. Previous to this study, HAD has been documented in at least three species of ticks. The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say) (Acari: Ixodidae) was chosen as the focal species for this study due to its importance as the vector of tularemia and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Previous population genetic studies of this tick found the existence of various haplotypes but the tick’s host origins were unknown. In this study, ticks were collected from 15 vertebrate host species to test for HAD using single nuclear polymorphisms (SNPs). In total, 136 individual D. variabilis ticks were sequenced using ddRADseq. Genomic evidence was found to point to D. variabilis exhibiting HAD on eight different hosts. A STRUCTURE analysis showed that the highest posterior probability was obtained with a population size of eight and these populations correlated with host species. Pairwise FST values were as high as 0.622 and indicated a range of genetic distinction between host groups. In addition, ticks collected from the vegetation appeared as one homogenous distinct genotype suggesting the existence of nidicolous (nest dwelling) and non-nidicolous genotypes. The identification of host race formation occurring in this animal parasite has implications for the understanding of D. variabilis pathogen transmission and targeted control efforts because genetically distinct populations can differ in traits relevant to these applications.  相似文献

The diversity and seasonal abundance of birds at Christchurch Airport, their food and feeding habits, and the phenology of the food resource were studied in 1968–69 as part of an investigation of the bird hazard to aircraft. The birds either fed and roosted on the airport or flew over or close to it. Seasonal trends in the diet of black‐backed gulls (Larus dominicanus), black‐billed gulls (L. bulleri), starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), and magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen hypoleuca) were determined by examining the gizzard contents of birds shot while they were feeding on the airfield. Marked food preferences were noticeably lacking, except that black‐backed gulls fed exclusively on earthworms. Black‐billed gulls, starlings, and magpies took a variety of insects, earthworms, arachnids, and, to a less extent, seeds. Species diversity, seasonal distribution, and abundance of invertebrates and seeds showed that the birds were opportunist feeders on a succession of temporarily abundant food, and their presence on the airfield was determined largely by the availability of invertebrates and seeds.  相似文献

Abstract. To investigate the role of ticks in TBE virus transmission, salivary gland extract (SGE) was derived from partially fed female Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks. Guinea-pigs were infested with uninfected R.appendiculatus nymphs and inoculated with a mixture of TBE virus and SGE or with virus alone. The number of ticks which on average acquired virus from feeding on animals inoculated with TBE virus and SGE from partially fed ticks was 4-fold greater than the number that became infected by feeding on animals inoculated with virus alone or virus plus SGE from unfed I.ricinus. Viraemia was detected in 67% of guinea-pigs inoculated with virus plus SGE compared to 30% of guinea-pigs inoculated with virus alone. Virus titres in the blood were similar for both groups of animals [range 2.0-2.8 log10 plaque-forming units (PFU)/ml of blood]; however, the number of ticks that became infected was significantly higher on animals inoculated with virus plus SGE from partially fed ticks. No significant difference was observed with respect to the tick species used to derive SGE. The results indicate that TBE virus transmission is enhanced by factor(s) associated with the salivary glands of feeding ticks, and that these factor(s) may facilitate efficient transmission of TBE virus between infected and uninfected ticks even when they feed on hosts that have no detectable viraemia.  相似文献

Fourteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed for the raccoon tick (Ixodes texanus). Three multiplexed panels comprising the loci were developed and 50 ticks collected from two infected raccoons (Procyon lotor) were genotyped. The number of alleles per locus ranged from five to 22, and single locus heterozygosities ranged from 0.46 to 0.94. Future research will further our understanding of I. texanus biology and help in elucidating the effects of life-history variation on parasite population genetic structure, using I. texanus as a model organism.  相似文献

Forest fragmentation may alter host-parasite interactions in ways that contribute to host population declines. We tested this prediction by examining parasite infections and the abundance of infective helminths in 20 forest fragments and in unfragmented forest in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Over 4 years, the endangered red colobus (Procolobus rufomitratus) declined by 20% in fragments, whereas the black-and-white colobus (Colobus guereza) in fragments and populations of both colobines in unfragmented forest remained relatively stable. Seven nematodes (Strongyloides fulleborni, Strongyloides stercoralis, Oesophagostomum sp., an unidentified strongyle, Trichuris sp., Ascaris sp., and Colobenterobius sp.), one cestode (Bertiella sp.), and three protozoans (Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, and Giardia sp.) were detected. Infection prevalence and the magnitude of multiple infections were greater for red colobus in fragmented than in unfragmented forest, but these parameters did not differ between forests for black-and-white colobus. Infective-stage colobus parasites occurred at higher densities in fragmented compared with unfragmented forest, demonstrating greater infection risk for fragmented populations. There was little evidence that the nature of the infection was related to the size of the fragment, the density of the host, or the nature of the infection in the other colobine, despite the fact that many of the parasites are considered generalists. This study suggests that forest fragmentation can alter host-parasite dynamics and demonstrates that such changes can correspond with changes in host population size in forest fragments.  相似文献

Abstract Protein components of homogenates of unfed larvae and nymphs of Ixodes ricinus (L.), and of ovary, haemolymph, Malpighian tubules, rectal ampulla, fat body, integument, salivary glands and midgut of partially fed adult females were studied for their antigenicity and carbohydrate moieties using immunoblotting and lectin affinity blotting (LAB) techniques. Comparing the individual anti-larval, anti-nymphal and anti-adult immune sera for their capacity to recognize the specific and trans-stadially cross-reactive antigenic proteins, larval feeding induced the most effective humoral response. The majority of immunogens recognized by rabbit anti-tick immune sera are glycoproteins. Most of the glycosylated antigens were modified with N-type glycans; however, O-type glycans were also demonstrated in some antigens. The correlation of the type of glycosylation with antigenicity, and the sharing of common antigenic epitopes by various tissues, are discussed.  相似文献

Twelve polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed for the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis), an important vector of infectious diseases in humans and animals. The number of alleles per locus ranged from nine to 30, and single locus heterozygosities ranged from 0.18 to 0.93. Abstract

Knowledge of the circadian behaviour of young tuatara (Sphenodon spp.) is relatively scarce because tuatara are difficult to observe in the wild. We document diurnal, nocturnal and crepuscular emergence and movements (half‐body movement, walking and running) of three groups of captive juvenile tuatara (2‐ and 3‐year‐old Sphenodon guntheri, and 5‐year‐old S. punctatus). Juvenile tuatara emerge predominantly at night, but move around above ground, mainly during the day and around sunset. Differences in emergence andmove‐ment scores between the three study groups were evident, probably linked with age, species or housing conditions, which were inevitably coupled in our study. We found that 2‐year‐old tuatara in captive conditions emerged less frequently than, but once above ground, moved more than 3‐ and 5‐year‐olds in semi‐captive conditions. Activities in semi‐captive conditions were not correlated with temperature, light or humidity. We conclude that young tuatara may be primarily adapted to nocturnal activity, but thermal restrictions and possible hardwired adaptations to avoid predators and conspecifics may make day‐time movements safer.  相似文献

The recent implication of Dermacentor reticulatus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in the transmission of canine babesiosis in the U.K. has highlighted the lack of accurate published data on its distribution in this country. This paper aims to collate and appraise historical data for D. reticulatus, to supplement such data with more recent surveillance data and to report on field sampling conducted during 2009–2016. These updated data facilitate better understanding of the current distribution of this tick in the U.K., which will better inform disease risk assessments. There appear to be four known regions of the U.K. in which D. reticulatus currently occurs, including western Wales, North and South Devon, and Essex. The majority of foci are located in coastal sand dunes and maritime grasslands, including grazing marsh. However, more recently the tick has been detected in urban greenspace in Essex. The emergence of this tick as a vector of babesiosis in the U.K. and its recent apparent spread in Essex into urban greenspace highlight the need for continued surveillance and for further research into its status as a vector of human and veterinary pathogens.  相似文献

Perhaps one of the central questions in ecology has been what limits the geographic distribution of species. The geographic distributions of the reptile-ticks Amblyomma limbatum, Bothriocroton hydrosauri and Amblyomma albolimbatum are a classic example of this problem: where these ticks meet, narrow regions-of-overlap often occur. Despite studies of interactions among these ticks, and of these ticks and their environment, we still do not understand what limits their geographic distributions. Many hypotheses have been proposed and tested, but all have seemingly been rejected. Our aim was to account for the abundance and the geographic distributions of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri at Bundey Bore Station, South Australia, where these species come in contact and have been studied for over 35 years, leading to over 55 000 records of reptiles and their ticks using a capture-mark-recapture approach. We constructed models which had combinations of temperature and moisture indices from different months of the year to determine the relationship between climate and tick abundance, and between climate and the shifting local geographic distribution of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri at Bundey Bore Station. We found that climate together with the abundance of ticks in the previous year and the abundance of the lizard host, accounted for 54%–77% of the variation in the abundance of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri among years. We also found that the climate in late autumn to winter, together with the abundance of ticks and their host, accounted for 18%–84% of the variation in the geographic distributions of these ticks among years. Climate was central to the abundance and the geographic distributions of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri at Bundey Bore Station. We speculate that the same mechanisms account for the geographic distributions of A. limbatum, B. hydrosauri and A. albolimbatum elsewhere in Australia; so, climate may explain the three-tick problem in Austral ecology.  相似文献

Studies on the seasonal abundance and activity of larvae, nymphs and adults of Dermacentor silvarum (Ixodida: Ixodidae), both on and off the host, were carried out over a 2-year period from February 2008 to January 2010 in northern China. During the study period, feeding ticks were removed weekly from domestic sheep and free-living ticks were collected weekly by flag-dragging in four different habitat types. Rodents were captured and inspected for immature ticks from June to September 2008. The results of this study suggest that the ticks mainly reside in shrubs and complete only one generation per year with sequential seasonal distribution and little overlap between the activity of the larvae and nymphs. Adults were most prevalent from late February to late May and peaked in number in mid-April. Larvae were found from early June to early September and peaked in number in mid-July. Nymphs were mainly distributed from late June to late September and peaked in mid-August. Adult and nymphal D. silvarum were found primarily on the ears of sheep, but no larvae were found on sheep. Additionally, an overwintering male adult population was detected on sheep after October, but no free-living adults were found by dragging.  相似文献

Neuropeptides are crucial regulators of development and various physiological functions but little is known about their identity, expression and function in vectors of pathogens causing serious diseases, such as ticks. Therefore, we have used antibodies against multiple insect and crustacean neuropeptides to reveal the presence of these bioactive molecules in peptidergic neurons and cells of the ixodid tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. These antibodies have detected 15 different immunoreactive compounds expressed in specific central and peripheral neurons associated with the synganglion. Most central neurons arborize in distinct areas of the neuropile or the putative neurohaemal periganglionic sheath of the synganglion. Several large identified neurons in the synganglion project multiple processes through peripheral nerves to form elaborate axonal arborizations on the surface of salivary glands or to terminate in the lateral segmental organs (LSO). Additional neuropeptide immunoreactivity has been observed in intrinsic secretory cells of the LSO. We have also identified two novel clusters of peripheral neurons embedded in the cheliceral and paraspiracular nerves. These neurons project branching axons into the synganglion and into the periphery. Our study has thus revealed a complex network of central and peripheral peptidergic neurons, putative neurohaemal and neuromodulatory structures and endocrine cells in the tick comparable with those found in insect and crustacean neuroendocrine systems. Strong specific staining with a large variety of antibodies also indicates that the tick nervous system and adjacent secretory organs are rich sources of diverse neuropeptides related to those identified in insects, crustaceans or even vertebrates. The parasitic wasp Ixodiphagus hookeri Howard (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) parasitizes larvae and nymphs of a number of tick species worldwide. Ticks themselves are parasitic on vertebrate hosts. To study the specificity and reliability of vertebrate odours used by I. hookeri for host location, we conducted bioassays in a four‐chamber olfactometer. Wasps were arrested by carbon dioxide and by odours from roe deer faeces and odours from hair of roe deer and wild boar. Odours from faeces of cattle, rabbit, and field mouse as well as odours from hair of cattle and field mouse had no effect. Odours from faeces of the host tick species Ixodes ricinus L. (Acari: Ixodidae) were attractive only up to a distance of 1 cm. Thus, I. hookeri reacts to general (carbon dioxide) and specific vertebrate odours from wild boar and deer. Examination of freshly shot specimens demonstrates that deer and wild boars are infested with a sufficient number of tick nymphs to tap the full reproductive potential of an I. hookeri female, which makes cues from these mammal species reliable. These results indicate that I. hookeri locates its hosts using specific and reliable mammal odours and that ticks are parasitized on their vertebrate hosts. The implications of this host‐finding strategy and its benefits for the parasitoid are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Supercooling points and chill tolerance were compared among nymphs and adults of the ixodid ticks Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum and Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).Supercooling points in the range of <-22 to -18°C were observed for nymphs, and -22 to -8°C for adults.The lower lethal temperatures observed under dry conditions, -14 to -10°C, were warmer than the supercooling points, but still much colder than -4.8°C, the lowest temperature recorded from a likely tick habitat in southwestern Ohio.Based on our experiments, spontaneous freezing and direct chilling injury are not significant mortality factors in these species in the field.Mortality was observed between -5 and -3°C for A.americanum and D.variabilis nymphs chilled for 2 h while in direct contact with ice.This mortality is probably due to inoculative freezing.Given the requirement for a rather humid microhabitat for off-host survival, these findings suggest that inoculative freezing is an important cause of overwintering mortality in these medically important species.  相似文献

The tick Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum has previously been reported from Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. A viable population of this species, including all developmental stages, has now been discovered on the southern end of Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. Species determination was carried out morphologically and using 18S and 16S rRNA. The data for 16S rRNA are the first published for this species. Amblyomma t. triguttatum is significant through its involvement in the natural, Australian cycle of Coxiella burnetti, the pathogen causing Q fever. The environment of Yorke Peninsula contains all of the components required for a natural Q fever cycle and three cases of this disease have been reported from this area since 1995. These findings reinforce the need to put in place effective mechanisms to monitor parasite distributions at a time of large scale global change.  相似文献
