In a study at Appleby Research Orchard, Nelson, examination of the fruit from mature ‘Delicious’ apple trees sprayed with ryania over 5 years showed that less than 10% of 5th‐instar larvae of the codling moth (Laspeyresia pomonella) seeking cocooning sites originated from fruit on the ground. In 1972 and 1973 the survival of such larvae was studied by tagging with cobalt‐58 and releasing them beneath mature trees. In both years about 25 % of the tagged larvae returned to the tree to spin cocoons. Larvae released on bare ground 0–1 m from the tree trunks were more successful than those released in the sward 1–2 m away. Once on the trees, most larvae spun cocoons beneath exfoliating bark on the lower parts of the leaders and the trunk. Fifty‐two percent of the cocoons located were formed on the ground, and overwintering mortality of these was estimated to be near 100%. The pre‐cocooning mortality of larvae released on the ground was similar to that of larvae released on the trees in the same year. It was concluded that larvae from windfalls could be ignored in estimating 5th‐instar larval mortality of codling moth on ‘Delicious’ trees. On the cultivars ‘Dunn's Favourite’ and ‘Cox's Orange Pippin’, however, the higher percentage of larvae in windfalls made their inclusion in mortality estimates essential.  相似文献

A technique is described whereby 5th‐instar larvae of the codling moth (Laspeyresia pomonella) which have finished feeding can be tagged externally with cobalt‐58 and released on apple trees, where they seek cocooning sites. Two μCi 58Co per insect did not significantly affect larval survival in the field, or subsequent pupation, emergence, mating, and oviposition in the laboratory. Tagging was more efficient than whole‐tree scraping for the location of cocoons, and was non‐destructive of both the insects and their cocooning sites.

Relocation and observation of the tagged larvae in their cocoons permitted accurate estimation of mortality from when they left the fruit (= release) until adult emergence in the following spring. Natural mortality of larvae seeking cocooning sites was attributed mainly to insect predators, and varied significantly between trees and blocks, averaging 57% over 6 years. Avian predation by the silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) was the greatest hazard to cocooned larvae; this, too, varied significantly between blocks, and averaged 53% over the same period. Both mortalities appeared to be density‐related.  相似文献

Abstract

Studies were made in an orchard near Nelson from 1974 to 1978 on integrated control of Panonychus ulmi (Koch) using the organophosphate-resistant predator Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten. Correct timing of selective acaricides during the October-January period is essential, and can be achieved by close observation of P. ulmi development. When the majority of winter eggs have hatched (late October to early November), or the majority of the summer eggs laid by the first generation (very late November to early or mid December), there is a short period when a maximum of immature mites occurs. This is before many adult females have matured, and is the most effective time for application of an acaricide such as cyhexatin. The development of P. ulmi, in particular the incubation period of the summer eggs, is controlled by temperature, and in seasons when mean temperatures are well below average in November and December the delayed mite development makes accurate timing of the December spray more difficult. Other factors which also affect mite development are the use of dormant oil, cultivar, and orchard aspect and shelter.

On the block of trees where no acaricides were used since 1968, although regular applications of azinphos-methyl were made, T. pyri maintained P. ulmi at acceptable levels over the 5 years 1973-78, a maximum of P. ulmi occurring each season in January with the third generation. In three seasons the peak was well below the threshold for commercial spraying; in two seasons this threshold was exceeded, but despite the absence of acaricides P. ulmi numbers soon fell.

A further experiment demonstrated the utility of mineral oil and cyhexatin as selective acaricides in integrated programmes. Cycloprate, tricyclotin, and fenbutatin oxide were shown to be as effective and selective as cyhexatin, a single application in early December giving good survival of T. pyri and season-long control of P. ulmi. In another experiment propargite was as effective and selective as cyhexatin; amitraz was more toxic to T. pyri and less persistent against P. ulmi, and resulted in a poor P. ulmi : T. pyri ratio; and chlorpyrifos, though not more toxic than cyhexatin to T. pyri, was less effective against P. ulmi.

Mancozeb, and dinocap + mancozeb, used in a summer-long programme of 12 treatments, were more toxic to T. pyri than were binapacryl or dinocap alone.  相似文献

Abstract

Development of European red mite (Panonychus ulmi) populations was studied from 1975 to 1977 in an orchard released from regular application of acaricides and supporting insignificant numbers of natural enemies of the mite. Populations grew rapidly from mid January, and reached higher levels on Hawke’s Bay Red Delicious than on Cox’s Orange Pippin or Granny Smith. Extensive early defoliation occurred in all cultivars in response to heavy feeding pressure. Application of cyhexatin in February 1976 failed to control populations in Granny Smith and Cox’s Orange Pippin, and only temporarily suppressed populations in Hawke’s Bay Red Delicious. Removal of all acaricide applications in 1976–77 on Hawke’s Bay Red Delicious showed that high population levels (365 mites per leaf) could develop. Stratification of sampling in Granny Smith showed that population densities decreased from the tree centre, through outer fruiting clusters, to current season’s shoots. Winter egg deposition on apples was studied in relation to various P. ulmi densities. Early harvest of Cox’s Orange Pippin prevented large numbers of winter eggs being laid on the fruits in spite of high P. ulmi densities; late harvest of Granny Smith exposed fruit to greater winter egg deposition. The intermediate harvest date of Hawke’s Bay Red Delicious resulted in fewer winter eggs on apples than for Granny Smith, in spite of much higher P. ulmi densities. On Hawke’s Bay Red Delicious, oviposition preference was for calyces of fruits not exposed to direct sunlight. A relationship between maximum P. ulmi densities and numbers of winter eggs on fruits is demonstrated.  相似文献

Polyethylene dispensers (Shin Etsu) containing 172 ml of the sex pheromone, (E, E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol (63%), dodecenol (31%) and tetradecenol (6%), of codling moth (CM),Cydia pomonella (L.), were placed in apple orchards in Virginia. Two blocks of about 2 ha each were treated in 1989, and three in 1990. Dispensers were placed in trees at a density of 1000/ha shortly after apple bloom. Male orientation to pheromone traps was almost totally disrupted (a few males were captured at high population densities). In 1989, the Daleville pheromone-treated block had 0.9% and 0.8% CM-injured fruit in the center and edge, respectively; 0% and 39.5% injured fruit were found in the conventional control and abandoned blocks, respectively. The Criglersville orchard (‘organically’ managed, with high CM density) CM harvest injury was 16.0%, 16.5%, 34.5%, and 26.5% in the pheromone-treated center and edge, organic control and abandoned blocks, respectively. In 1990, the Daleville CM harvest injury was 4.7%, 7.3%, 1.1%, 0.3% and 58%, in the pheromone-treated center and edge, control center and edge, and abandoned blocks, respectively (possible reasons for the high injury in this block are discussed). Harvest injury in the Fincastle pheromone-treated and control blocks were 0.7% and 0%, respectively. The Criglersville orchard yielded 17%, 19% and 20% CM-injured fruit at harvest in the pheromone-treated, organic control and abandoned blocks, respectively. Pheromone release rate was calculated as 37 mg/ha/h in 1989.  相似文献

Attraction of codling moth males to apple volatiles   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The attraction of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, to apple volatile compounds known to elicit an antennal response was tested both in the field and in a wind tunnel. In the field, (E)‐β‐farnesene captured male moths. The addition of other apple volatiles, including (E,E)‐α‐farnesene, linalool, or (E,E)‐farnesol to (E)‐β‐farnesene did not significantly augment trap catch. Few females were caught in traps which also caught male moths, but female captures were not significantly different from blank traps. In the wind tunnel, males were attracted to (E,E)‐farnesol, but not to (E)‐β‐farnesene. The addition of (E,E)‐α‐farnesene to (E)‐β‐farnesene had a synergistic effect on male attraction. The male behavioural sequence elicited by plant volatiles, including upwind flight behaviour, was indistinguishable from the behaviour elicited by sex pheromone.  相似文献

Abstract

An integrated control programme against Panonychus ulmi (Koch) is described which uses a phytoseiid predator, Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten, known to be common in commercial orchards and to be highly resistant to azinphos-methyl. The programme was tested in commercial export orchards in Nelson in the 1975–76 and 1976–77 seasons. By regular monitoring of the levels and ratios of T. pyri and P. ulmi the application of miticides was confined to occasions when specified population thresholds were exceeded. At these times a selective miticide, cyhexatin, was applied to improve predator: prey ratios. No other changes were made to normal commercial spray practices for pest and disease control in the monitored orchards. The integrated mite control programme saved an average of N.Z.$75–80/ha in spray materials each season. No fruits were rejected from export grade because of contamination with mite eggs. Procedures for the wider implementation of integrated mite control in commercial orchards are described and the response of growers is noted. The role of selective miticides in the integrated control of P. ulmi is discussed.  相似文献

Mite relationships were investigated in an orchard near Nelson from 1962 to 1974 in conjunction with a long‐term experiment into integrated control of apple pests. From 42% to 57% of the total winter eggs of Panonychus ulmi hatched over a period of 48–53 days from the last week of September until mid November. The main hatch—from 10% to 90%—took 19–20 days. Five generations occurred in each season, from October to March, although some females laid winter eggs from mid January if leaf condition became poor. Insect predators found were Stethorus bifidus, Sejanus albisignata, Arthrocnodax sp., and Xylapothrips sp. The mite Typhlodromus pyri (Phytoseiidae), the most important predator, had up to 5 generations from October to March; some females ceased to feed or oviposit from mid February onwards, and took on the characteristics of the overwintering diapause phase. With the integrated programme based on ryania, a favourable balance of P. ulmi and T. pyri was established after an initial outbreak of P. ulmi in the 1st or 2nd season, and was maintained until 1970–71, when P. ulmi outbreaks occurred on several cultivars in a season marked by hot, dry conditions in November and December. Natural control was restored the next year except on cy. Delicious, where P. ulmi remained in greater numbers for several years. With a complete commercial spray programme from 1962 to 1967 P. ulmi became resistant to all acaricides used; with the regular azinphos‐methyl programme and no acaricides in 1967–68 a population of T. pyri resistant to this insecticide emerged. The approximately × 10 resistance level did not increase appreciably, so the azinphos‐methyl dosage was reduced from 0.05% to 0.025% to allow greater survival. Several hot, dry summers followed, and commercial control of P. ulmi by T. pyri did not occur until 1973–74. A programme of low‐dosage carbaryl allowed T. pyri and S. albisignata to establish in fair numbers, but control of P. ulmi was not achieved. Experiments with mineral oils and cyhexatin have shown them to have some potential for inclusion against P. ulmi in future integrated programmes.  相似文献

New formulations of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), granulovirus (CpGV) [family Baculoviridae, genus Granulovirus] are commercially available in North America. In field tests on apple (Malus sp. 'Delicious'), we compared different application strategies for CpGV (Cyd-X, Certis USA, Clovis, CA) used in full-season programs against high pest populations. In replicated single tree plots, three rates (0.073, 0.219, and 0.438 liter ha(-1)) and application intervals (7, 10, and 14 d) killed 81-99% of larvae in fruit and reduced the number of mature larvae recovered in tree bands by 54-98%. Although the proportion of deep entries declined by 77-98%, the amount of fruit injury was not reduced compared with controls. There was a statistical trend between increasing dosage and spray frequency intervals and virus effectiveness, but no interaction between these factors. In a commercial orchard, we assessed a standard (0.219 liter ha(-1)) and two reduced rates of the virus (0.146 and 0.073 liter ha(-1)) applied in a weekly spray program in replicated 0.2-ha blocks. In the first generation, fruit injury was reduced in virus-treated compared with three untreated blocks although the decrease was only significant at the standard rate. Mortality rates of larvae (in fruit) were > or =90%, dose dependent, and comparable with rates observed from individual trees sprayed with equivalent treatments in the previous study. Rates of larval mortality declined at all dosages (81-85%) in the first part of the second generation. Most damage and proportionally less mortality occurred in the upper canopy. High pest pressures and untreated blocks contributed to significant damage and the study was terminated early. These data suggest virus programs can be tailored according to the localized pest pressure, but it may not prevent economic damage in high-pressure situations.  相似文献

Codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is the main pest of pome fruits worldwide. Despite its economic importance, little is known about the genetic structure and patterns of dispersal at the local and regional scale, which are important aspects for establishing a control strategy for this pest. An analysis of genetic variability using microsatellites was performed for 11 codling moth populations in the two major apple (Malus domestica Borkh) cropping regions in central Chile. Despite the geographical distances between some populations (approximately 185 km), there was low genetic differentiation among populations (F(ST) = 0.002176), with only slight isolation by distance. Only approximately 0.2% of the genetic variability was found among the populations. Geographically structured genetic variation was independent of apple orchard management (production or abandoned). These results suggest a high genetic exchange of codling moth between orchards, possibly mediated by human activities related to fruit production.  相似文献

Population dynamics of parasitoid–host interaction is primary important knowledge to develop an efficient biological control strategy of insect pests. We analyzed the seasonal dynamic of the parasitoid community of the codling moth in two sites in South-Eastern France, which differed by the number of codling moth annual generations. Parasitism was estimated by sampling both young larvae collected within apple fruits and mature larvae in band traps wrapped around the trunk of the apple trees. Parasitism rates differed between sites and between young and mature larvae. Parasitism rate were higher in young larvae (29% in average) than in the mature ones (21% in average) and globally increased along the season among cohorts of mature codling moth larvae (from 4% to 34%). The three most abundant species in the parasitoid community – Ascogaster quadridentata, Pristomerus vulnerator and Perilampus tristis – were observed at both sites, in each codling moth cohort and in both young and mature larvae. Among all the parasitoids, the proportion of Perilampus – an hyper-parasitoid attacking both Ascogaster and Pristomerus primary parasitoids – increased among the codling moth cohorts (from 9% to 53%) whereas the proportion of Ascogaster decreased (from 82% to 35%). This shed light on the importance to characterize the dynamic of the whole trophic network (including hyperparasitism) to design biological control strategies.  相似文献

Codling moths, Cydia pomonella (L.), have long been suspected of emerging from stacks of harvest bins in the spring and causing damage to nearby apple and pear orchards. With increased use of mating disruption for codling moth control, outside sources of infestation have become more of a concern for growers using pheromone based mating disruption systems. Studies were designed to provide information on bins as a source of codling moth and the pattern of codling moth emergence from stacks of bins. In these studies, codling moth larvae colonized wood harvest bins at a much higher frequency than harvest bins made of injection molded plastic (189 moths emerged from wood compared with five from plastic). There was no statistical difference in the number of moths infesting bins that had been filled with infested fruit compared with bins left empty at harvest. This suggests that codling moth enter the bins during the time that the bins are in the orchard before harvest. Emergence of laboratory reared adult codling moth from wood bins placed in stacks was found to be prolonged compared with field populations. Temperature differences within the bin stacks accounted for this attenuated emergence pattern. Covering bin stacks with clear plastic accelerated codling moth development in the upper levels of the stack. Codling moth emergence patterns from plastic-covered stacks more closely coincided with male flight in field populations. This information could be important in developing a technique for neutralizing codling moth-infested bins, and in understanding how infested bins may influence pest management in fruit orchards that are located near bin piles. Implications for control of codling moth in conventional orchards and in those using mating disruption as the principal component of an integrated pest management system include increased numbers of treatments directed at areas affected by infested bins.  相似文献

We have demonstrated that larvae of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L) can successfully complete their first instar when fed apple leaves instead of fruit. Larvae fed leaves after hatching maximized their feeding intensity (about 320 g/larva/day) on day 2. Weight gain revealed a stereotypic sigmoid pattern that peaked on day 3. Although the maximum body weight of larvae fed leaves was 70–85% less than for larvae maintained on apples or on artificial diet, 100% of larvae fed leaves molted to the second instar 3–5 days after hatching. Our investigation revealed a diurnal pattern of leaf ingestion, and neonates' feeding intensity decreased significantly during the scotophase. We also demonstrated that monosodium glutamate (MSG) increased feeding on leaves by codling moth larvae. Depending on the duration of the bioassay, and larval age at time of initial exposure, 0.05 mg/ml and 0.1 mg/ml MSG increased apple leaf consumption by 25–60% over leaves alone. The effect of monosodium glutamate was best demonstrated during the first day following hatching. Exposure to MSG also accelerated molting to the second instar. Larvae exposed to MSG initiated consumption of leaf tissue significantly earlier than control neonates. The feeding stimulatory effect of MSG was not observed if exposure to this chemical was delayed until 3–4 h after hatch. The addition of feeding stimulants to pesticides that act via the alimentary tract may reduce the amount of active ingredients needed to maintain the efficacy of these formulations. Here, we postulate that first instar codling moth larvae are potential targets for treatment with pesticide formulations enhanced with monosodium glutamate.  相似文献

Like in most parts of the world, the codling moth, Cydia pomonello (L.), is one of the most important pests in apple orchards in the Romanian Banat region. There, the control of this pest is often inadequate and the damage and economic losses are therefore enormous. This lack of control is caused by structural problems such as the absence of an advanced distribution network for phytopharmaceutical products, obsolete spraying equipment and the insufficient exchange of knowledge and expertise of those products and the pest itself between the local research facilities and the apple growers. The purpose of this research project is rather demonstrative, because a change in the Romanian pome culture's attitude is urgently needed. Pheromone trapping and the computerized population model RIMpro Cydia, which predicts important phenological events such as adult flight and egg hatch, were used to determine the optimal spray timing. These modern pest management techniques would not only minimize pressure on the environment, but also on the income of the Romanian apple grower, for whom phytopharmaceuticals are a high-priced investment. In July 2006 a comparative study between the supervised pest control program using Calypso, Runner and Reldan, all easily obtainable and commercially available insecticides in the region, and a conventional Romanian management programme was conducted. The control plot and the two test plots were all three located in a high codling moth pressure orchard in Timi?oara. In the control plot 9,44 % of the fruits were damaged by codling moth larvae. In the plot containing the trees that were treated according to the traditional Romanian management programme 5,56 % damage was recorded, while the supervised management plot showed only 1,1% damage. Additionally damage was measured in another orchard in Periam, about 60 km away from the other plots. There, an intensive control program using Reldan, Calypso, Actare, Karate and Insegar was applied and damage measured only 0.2%. While at first glance that approach seems most efficient, it has to be noticed that it used twice as much insecticide treatments as were used in the supervised control program. Furthermore, 1 % damage is suggested by most references as being the economical threshold for treatments. The results of this comparative study clearly show that supervised codling moth control proofs to be the most profitable. Starting from August the same year, all of the control programmes in Timi?oara were stopped. Therefore the second and possibly the third generation of codling moth larvae could develop freely. In the plot which was earlier sprayed according to the warnings of RIMpro Cydia and the pheromone trap this resulted in 27.5% damaged fruits during harvest in September. In the control plot damage reached 60.95%. These results highlight the necessity of the development of an efficient codling moth control program. Once that program is fine-tuned it should be presented to the local apple growers in order to give the Romanian pome culture a boost.

The dynamics of a mature population of Hieracium pilosella under four different treatments (± irrigation, ± fertiliser, ± defoliation, and ± fungicide & insecticide, in a full factorial design) were compared in the Mackenzie Basin, New Zealand. H. pilosella had been growing at the site for at least 30 years. Recorded variables included rosette density, inflorescence and stolon production, recruitment and mortality, and plant cover. The population appears to be regulated through density-dependent mortality interacting with density-independent reproduction. In the treated plots, irrigation and fertiliser had the greatest effects, increasing both the proportion of established rosettes producing stolons and stolon length. Irrigation also increased the likelihood of a daughter rosette becoming reproductive and decreased inflorescence abortion. Fertiliser increased the probability of an established rosette reproducing and the number of daughter rosettes produced. In unmanipulated plots H. pilosella appeared to be at or near an equilibrium density of ca. 3200 rosettes m−2, but over longer time scales the low reproductive rates shown in this study may presage slow population decline due to plant-induced environmental degradation. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
