Three species of Entomophthora killed many Metopolophium dirhodum, M. festucae and Sitobion avenae on wheat at Harpenden, Hertfordshire, in 1971. Rainfall was low and aphid numbers were small in May and there was no Entomophthora infection. E. planchoniana first infected M. dirhodum early in June and the percentage of each aphid species infected increased during and after heavier rain in the first 2 weeks of June. M. dirhodum and S. avenae were most often infected by E. planchoniana, and the less common M. festucae mostly by E. aphidis and E. thaxteriana. Relative frequencies of E. aphidis and E. thaxteriana were largest before, and of E. planchoniana after, mid-July. The largest percentages infected were 53% of M. dirhodum and 30% of S. avenae during the second half of July and 60% of M. festucae in late June. The percentages of old nymphs and apterous adults that were infected were similar and only about half those of infected alatae.  相似文献

We investigated the spectral sensitivity and response to light intensity of Pachyneuron aphidis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), which is a common hyperparasitoid of Aphidius gifuensis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a key natural enemy of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae). To do so, we used 15 monochromatic lights (emitting various specific wavelengths from 340 to 649 nm) and white light. P. aphidis adults are diurnal insects that show a positive phototaxis to a broad spectrum of light. Significant differences were found between sexes in the phototactic responses of P. aphidis to different monochromatic lights. Female P. aphidis showed four peaks of sensitivity at 380, 450, 504 and 589 nm. Male P. aphidis show two peaks of sensitivity, one at 450 nm and second at 628 nm. P. aphidis adults showed an increased phototactic response at low intensities and a decreased phototactic response at high intensities for both UV light and blue light. This experiment will help provide a scientific basis for the development of colour traps for insect pest management.  相似文献

Studies on Entomophthora in populations of Aphis fabae on field beans   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The population of Aphis fabae on field beans at a site in Highfield, Rothamsted in 1973 reached its peak 1 wk earlier than that at an equivalent site in Mill Dam Close, Woburn, 29 km NW of Rothamsted. Epizootics of Entomophthora caused weekly maximum mortalities of adult apterae of 71% at Highfield and 67% at Mill Dam Close. These epizootics and the periodicity of Entomophthora conidia in the air closely paralleled the development of the aphid population. There was little evidence of a consistent relationship between Entomophthora infection and any of the weather factors considered. At both sites most mortality was caused by E. planchoniana though many aphids were killed by E. aphidis and E. obscura. E. fresenii and E. virulenta killed very few aphids. Most conidia in the air were of the E. aphidis-type. Up to 44% of alatae emigrating from bean crops were infected with Entomophthora, confirming that aphid migration is an important means of distributing the fungi. Aphid numbers rose to more than 1600/plant at both sites, in spite of the action of Entomophthora, and would probably have been less had the fungi been more abundant earlier in the season.  相似文献

Since the invasion of Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum from North America we searched for parasitoids of this aphid on Solidago altissima in Japan to determine what species of native parasitoids attack the newly invasive aphid. We found three primary parasitoid species: Ephedrus plagiator and Praon yomenae (Braconidae, Aphidiinae) and Aphelinus albipodus (Aphelinidae). We also found eight hyperparasitoid species: Syrphophagus sp. (Encyrtidae), Dendrocerus carpenteri (Megaspilidae), Asaphes suspensus (Pteromalidae) and Pachyneuron aphidis (Pteromalidae) through both E. plagiator and A. albipodus; Phaenoglyphis villosa (Figitidae, Charipinae), Aprostocetus sp. (Eulophidae, Tetrastichinae) and D. laticeps through E. plagiator, and Alloxysta sp. nr brevis (Figitidae, Charipinae) through A. albipodus. Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum is usually attacked by rather polyphagous primary parasitoids, E. plagiator and A. albipodus, in Japan, where an oligophagous parasitoid specialized to allied aphid species is probably absent. The hyperparasitoid community of U. nigrotuberculatum is common to those of the aphids occurring in open field‐type habitats in Japan.  相似文献

Abstract

Sampling of bluegreen lucerne aphid showed that the most efficient method differs according to the time of year and the height of the lucerne. In late June 1976, when the lucerne was short (mean height 3.6 cm), an area removal sample of 700 cm2 was more efficient to achieve a 10% degree of precision (half-width of a confidence limit) than area samples of 80 and 300 cm2, suction sampling of the same areas, and stem sampling. In early spring (lucerne height 11.7 cm) the 80 cm2 area removal sample was the most efficient. Just before the second hay cut (late January), the length of lucerne stems (62.5 cm) precluded use of any area removal technique; stem samples were most efficient. The cost in time was fuliy considered in sampling method comparisons. Possible differences with population density were not considered.  相似文献

The phloem sap of two lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) genotypes inducing differences in pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Homoptera: Aphididae) performances (weight, fecundity, survival), was collected by stylectomy (radio frequency microcautery). Sugars and amino acids were assayed. No significant difference in their concentrations could be established between genotypes. It is thus unlikely that a substantial part of the varietal resistance of these lucerne genotypes to pea aphid could be related to the content in sugars or amino acids. The same conclusion was drawn for the sugar/amino acid ratio. The amino acid profiles were globally similar. They nevertheless allowed a discrimination between the two genotypes on a few amino acids (alanine, leucine, isoleucine, arginine, ornithine) only. Moreover, the degree of resistance can be related neither to GABA concentration, nor to that of sulfur amino acids, because these constituants were either absent, or in trace amounts, whatever the lucerne genotype taken into account. Stylectomy parameters revealed some interesting differences in the sap exudation of the two genotypes. Average volume of exudation by stylet and average duration of exudation were respective 2.8 and 2.3 times higher in the susceptible genotype. These results suggest a reduced flow of phloem sap, after puncturing of the sieve-tubes by the aphid stylets on the resistant genotype; this could result in a greater difficulty in phloem sap ingestion by aphids settled on the resistant genotype and thus in suboptimal performances.  相似文献

We analyzed the behavioral interactions between two species of honeydew-collecting ants (Lasius niger, Myrmica laevinodis) and foraging females of four species of aphid hyperparasitoids (Aphidencyrtus aphidivorus, Dendrocerus carpenteri, Pachyneuron aphidis, Asaphes vulgaris) usingAphis fabae ssp.cirsiiacanthoidis andLysiphlebus cardui on thistles as aphid and primary parasitoid, respectively. The observed interaction patterns and foraging parameters varied within hyperparasitoid species and revealed different strategies based upon behavioral and morphological constraints.D. carpenteri generally tried to avoid ant encounters. This avoidance strategy was successful in interactions withM. laevinodis but failed when encountering the more aggressiveL. niger, which caused about 26% adult mortality. In contrast,A. aphidivorus, P. aphidis, andA. vulgaris possess jumping ability and were hardly exposed to mortality risks. The escape reaction jump off was used as soon as ants made physical contact with foraging females. While the flight strategy ofP. aphidis is connected with cryptic movement patterns without avoidance behavior,A. aphidivorus first avoided ants and jumped off only as a last resort. Similar patterns, but less expressive, are displayed byA. vulgaris. We suggest that these different strategies are responsible for different foraging success in ant-attended resources in field.  相似文献

The surface structure of freshly discharged conidia ofEntomophthora thaxteriana Hall & Bell andE. destruens Weiser & Batko is slightly undulated and that of their papillae has elevated ridges forming a reticulation. The conidia ofZoophthora aphidis Batko are of more variable shape than those ofE. thaxteriana andE. destruens, their surface is smoother and the reticulate structure of their papillae is less distinct. The surface of germinating or older conidia of all the 3 species is gradually wrinkled, furrowed, forming deep depressions or completely broken down. The surface features of germ tubes or hyphae depend on the tubes being filled with the plasma and the resultant turgor. The plasma ofZ. aphidis conidia is capable of forming large areas of membranes of various shapes which enables it to move to a rather long distance.

In autumn 1981 there were widespread reports of a reduced level of antibiosis in lucerne crops and field trials where cultivars selected for resistance to the aphid, Therioaphis trifolii f. maculata, had been used. On our field trial, the plot of CUF 101 lucerne was infested to a level about 40% of that on the aphid-susceptible Hunter River, compared with an average of about 3% over the two years before and the two years after.An experimental study of possible causes using a bioassay technique on cloned plants representing the spectrum of resistance in CUF 101 indicated that loss of resistance was temporary and occurred apparently randomly among the tests, but that certain treatments increase the frequency of its occurrence. Lowered temperatures and the use of either young regrowth or senescent lucerne, each increased the frequency of loss of resistance. Inundation of lucerne by large numbers of aphids did not affect the expression of resistance directly, but the few progeny that survived to adulthood on partly-resistance lucerne were habituated and were then able to interact with the plants to increase the apparent frequency of breakdown of resistance. Plants which showed the loss of resistance developed aphid populations between 4x ad 25x those when they expressed their normal resistance level.Investigations suggest that the situation in autumn 1981 may have been the result of a prolonged and massive immigration of aphids into lucerne crops, which, on the aphid resistant cultivars allowed surviving aphids to exploit maximally the combined effects of factors causing some loss of resistance.  相似文献

Bean leaf roll virus (BLRV) and pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV) were each transmitted by Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) to fifteen of thirty species of legumes in the glasshouse; eleven species were susceptible to both viruses. The only biennial or perennial species infected by BLRV were hop trefoil (Medicago lupulina L.), lucerne (M. sativa L.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), but naturally infected sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) and white clover (T. repens L.) were found. The only perennial species infected with PEMV in the glasshouse was kidney vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria L.). Eggs of A. pisum, which seems to be the main vector of BLRV and PEMV in England, were found in winter on several species of cultivated perennial legumes, most on lucerne, fewest on white clover. In spring, more viviparae of A. pisum were found on lucerne than on other perennial legumes, and many on lucerne, but few on red or white clover, were infective with BLRV. Lucerne is probably the main overwintering source of BLRV in areas where lucerne is common, but elsewhere red and white clovers are probably as important. No aphid collected from perennial legumes between 1965 and 1968 was infective with PEMV, but this virus can overwinter in common vetch (Vicia sativa L.). Lucerne infected with BLRV was usually symptomless or showed only transient mild yellowing of young leaves. Lucerne plants showing vein-yellowing, similar to that previously reported as a symptom of BLRV, were possibly infected with an aberrant strain of BLRV but more probably with BLRV and another aphid-transmitted agent. Inoculations from lucerne with vein-yellowing symptoms sometimes caused vein-yellowing, and sometimes typical BLRV-symptoms, in crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.).  相似文献

The spotted alfalfa aphid (SAA),Therioaphis trifolii (Monell)f. maculata, was first recorded in Australia in 1977. It is a major pest of lucerne and other pasture medics but not of clover (Trifolium spp.). The parasitoidTrioxys complanatus Quilis was introduced into Australia in late 1977 as part of a biological control program for SAA and made a substantial contribution to the management of the pest. Since 1989, aphids which are individually indistinguishable from SAA have been causing substantial yield loss to clover pastures in western and south-eastern Australia. This aphid, now known in Australia as the spotted clover aphid (SCA), is genetically distinct from SAA and has a much wider host range. Populations of SCA in clover are rarely parasitised byT. complanatus. A series of experiments was undertaken to determine whether the greater susceptibility of SAA in lucerne than of SCA in clover to parasitisation byT. complanatus is due to the attraction of the parasitoid preferentially to lucerne or to the differential attractiveness of the aphids themselves. SAA and SCA were offered to the parasitoids in arenas of increasing complexity from single trifoliate leaves of lucerne and clover on agar through single potted plants in small cages to groups of potted plants in a large cage. Results showed that the parasitoids exhibited a preference for lucerne though, in the cage situation, they did find and parasitise SCA on clover. They did not differentiate between SAA and SCA on lucerne.  相似文献

1. Mutualistic and antagonistic interactions, although often studied independently, may affect each other, and food web dynamics are likely to be determined by the two processes working in concert. 2. The structure, and hence dynamics, of food webs depends on the relative abundances of generalist and specialist feeding guilds. Secondary parasitoids of aphids can be divided into two feeding guilds: (i) the more specialised endoparasitoids, which attack the primary parasitoid larvae in the still living aphid, and (ii) the generalist ectoparasitoids, which attack the pre‐pupa of the primary or secondary parasitoid in the mummified aphid. 3. We studied the effect of an ant–aphid mutualism on the relative abundance of these two functional groups of secondary parasitoids. We hypothesised that generalists will be negatively affected by the presence of ants, thus leading to a greater dominance of specialists. 4. We manipulated the access of ants (Lasius niger) to aphid colonies in which we placed parasitised aphids. Aphid mummies were collected and reared to determine the levels of endo‐ and ecto‐secondary parasitism. 5. When aphids were attended by L. niger the proportion of secondary parasitism by ectoparasitoids dropped from 26 to 8% of the total number of parasitised aphids, with Pachyneuron aphidis most strongly affected, while endoparasitoids as a group did not respond. However, among these Syrphophagus mamitus profited from ant attendance becoming the dominant secondary parasitoid, while parasitisation rates of Alloxysta and Phaenoglyphis declined. 6. The shift to S. mamitus as dominant secondary parasitoid in ant‐attended aphid colonies is likely due to the behavioural plasticity of this species in response to ant aggression, and a release from tertiary parasitism by generalist ectoparasitoids. 7. The reduction of secondary parasitism by generalist ectoparasitoids reduces the potential for apparent competition among primary parasitoids with consequences for the dynamics of the wider food web.  相似文献

Plant surface is colonised with a vast community of non-pathogenic epiphytic microorganisms which play an important role in host defence. In the present study, we reported a fungus from mulberry leaf surface that showed an antagonistic effect against mulberry powdery mildew fungal pathogen Phyllactinia sp. This novel isolate is a yeast-like fungus that was identified as Pseudozyma aphidis CNm2012 based on morphologic and phylogenetic analysis. According to our research, P. aphidis CNm2012 directly acted on the powdery mildew conidia via parasitism which caused conidial atrophy, collapse and eventually, cleavage and death. During the parasitic process, we found the isolate could gather around the conidia of Phyllactinia sp. and form hyphae that grew on the conidial surface and utilise the conidia as a nutrient source. Field studies revealed that P. aphidis CNm2012 could suppress the disease incidence of mulberry powdery mildew caused by Phyllactinia sp., and reduce the disease severity. To our knowledge, it is the first report of P. aphidis directly against powdery mildew fungus Phyllactinia spp. by parasitism. Our results indicated that P. aphidis CNm2012 could be served as an environmentally friendly alternative of chemical pesticides to manage mulberry powdery mildew disease.  相似文献

Farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FPPS) catalyzes the formation of FPP, providing the precursor for the biosynthesis of (E)‐β‐farnesene (EβF) in plants, but it is unknown if FPPS supplies the precursor for the biosynthesis of EβF, the major component of aphid alarm pheromone, though our previous studies support the hypothesis that EβF is synthesized by the aphid itself. Here, we used two cohorts of the green peach aphid Myzus persicae separately, reared on pepper plant and artificial diet to test the correlations among droplet emission, EβF quantity, and FPPS gene expression. It was found that the proportion of aphids emitting cornicle droplets and the quantity of EβF per milligram of aphid were both significantly different between the two cohorts, which were positively correlated with the expression of the two FPPS genes ( MpFPPS1/ 2) in M. persicae. These results were further confirmed by RNAi‐mediated knockdown of MpFPPS1/ 2. Specifically, knockdown of MpFPPS1/ 2 imposed no significant cost on the survival of aphid but remarkably increased the number of offspring per aphid; most importantly, knockdown of MpFPPS1/ 2 significantly reduced the proportion of aphids emitting droplets and the quantity of EβF calculated as per the weight of aphid. Our results suggest that both FPPS genes are involved in the production of EβF in M. persicae and cornicle droplet emission is closely associated with the EβF release in the aphid.  相似文献

Summary. The natural occurrence of fungal pathogens of aphids and their ecological host range was investigated in Tunisia from 2009 to 2012. The survey focused on aphid infesting different crops and weeds and included 10 different aphid species. Samples were collected from eight agricultural crops sites belonging to three different bioclimatic zones. Four pathogens from the phylum Entomophthoromycota were found to occur naturally in Tunisian ecosystems: Pandora neoaphidis (Entomophthorales: Entomophthoraceae), Entomophthora planchoniana (Entomophthorales: Entomophthoraceae), Conidiobolus obscurus (Entomophthorales: Ancylistaceae) and Neozygites fresenii (Neozygitales: Neozygitaceae). The occurrence of entomophthoralean fungi depended on the sampling area, the bioclimatic zone, and aphid species. P. neoaphidis and E. planchoniana were the predominant pathogens infecting a wide range of aphid species whereas C. obscurus and N. fresenii were sporadically present on a limited number of aphid species. This study is the first survey on ecological host range of entomophthoralean fungi in Tunisia, and the first documentation of C. obscurus and N. fresenii to occur in Tunisia and Maghreb Region.  相似文献

Abstract

Crude extracts of lucerne (Medicago sativa) and Lotus pedunculatus root were toxic when administered orally to third-instar Costelytra zealandica larvae. Purified saponins from lucerne root were alone found sufficiently toxic to account fully for the activity of the crude extract. Condensed tannins extracted from L. pedunculatus and L. corniculatus had no effect on larval survival when administered at levels equivalent to those present in crude extracts.  相似文献

The minimum amount of suitable habitat (MASH) is an important concept in conservation biological control. Two methods for estimating the MASH have been proposed by McCoy and Mushinsky based on an inverse density–area relationship. Using data of the population densities of aphid host–parasitoid–hyperparasitoid collected from wheat fields of different habitat sizes, we argued that the inverse density–area relationship may be an artifact. Significant correlations between population densities and patch sizes from all three trophic levels were found once the population density had been log-transformed. We could not obtain the same results if the population density had not been log-transformed. We estimated that the MASH for the aphid M. avena, S. graminum, A. avenae, A. gifuensis, P. aphidis, and Alloxysta sp. were 246, 246, 479, 495, 949, and 835 m2 according to the methods of McCoy and Mushinsky. The scale-dependence and the systematic spatial variations of the host–parasitoid interaction suggests that we can achieve an optimal effect of biological control by manipulating the habitat patch sizes, although not based on the inverse density–area relationship.  相似文献
