Spontaneous and electrically-elicited motor activity was recorded by triple organ bath in rat segment-model preparation as display of excitation of local nerve networks and ascending or descending reflex pathways underlying contractile potency and functional coordination of colonic longitudinal and circular muscles. Spontaneous high-amplitude contractions, but not relaxations, appeared synchronously in both muscles. Electrical field stimulation applied to proximal or distal part of segments elicited both tetrodotoxin (0.1 microM)-sensitive local motor responses of the stimulated part and ascending or descending motor responses of the contralateral, nonstimulated part of the preparations. Contractions characterized the local response of longitudinal muscle. The circular muscle responded with relaxation followed by contraction. Synchronous ascending contractions and descending contraction of the longitudinal muscle and relaxation followed by contraction of the circular muscle were observed when the middle part of segments was stimulated, thus indicating that locally-induced nerve excitation propagated via intrinsic ascending or descending nerve pathways that could be synchronously coactivated by one and the same stimulus. The ascending motor responses were more pronounced and the motor responses of longitudinal muscle were expressed more than those of circular muscle suggesting an essential role of ascending reflex pathways and longitudinal muscle in the coordinated motor activity of colon.  相似文献

On isolated abdominal nervous chain of the cockroach studies have been made of the responses of motoneurones of the thoracic ganglion to electrical stimulation of afferent axons of the leg nerve under normal conditions and during application of an anticholinesterase drug, GD-7. Depending on the type of stimulated axons, monosynaptic response, as well as polysynaptic phasic and tonic responses of motoneurones were recorded. A scheme of activation of motoneurones is suggested which evokes slow contractions of muscles in cockroach extremities.  相似文献

In the moth Manduca sexta, the paired mesothoracic flight steering muscle II PD2m takes part in the generation of the flight rhythm and is spontaneously active in the non-flying animal. This spontaneous activity is modulated by optomotor stimuli and directionally selective. The directional response characteristics are analyzed. Another spontaneously active steering muscle pair, the III PD2c, is situated in the metathorax. The activities of this pair and of a third muscle pair, the III PD3 are also influenced by visual stimulation.The responses of all 6 muscles to optomotor stimuli which simulate the flight situations yaw, roll, thrust and lift are analyzed. Each situation elicits a unique pattern of activation/deactivation within this set of muscles. The activity pattern in non-flying animals allows the prediction of flight steering mechanisms such as changes of wing area in flight turns and provides a useful basis for the analysis of visuo-motor pathways.  相似文献

Summary Intracellular recordings have been made from the somata of two metathoracic flight motoneurons, one innervating an elevator muscle of the hindwing, the tergosternal muscle 113 and the other a depressor, the first basalar muscle 127. The locust,Ghortoicetes terminifera was mounted ventral side uppermost with the thorax restrained and opened for access to the thoracic ganglia. Patterns of electrical activity recorded from the thoracic muscles were similar to those shown by a locust during flight when tethered in a more normal posture. In flight the left and right 113 motoneurons each receive a single impulse together at every stroke of the wing, with the 127 muscles active in approximate antiphase. A spike in a 113 motoneuron causes a delayed wave of excitation simultaneously upon itself and its contralateral partner (Fig. 2). The epsp's which form these waves summate and may cause a spike which follows the original one with a delay equal to the wingbeat period. The delayed excitation of the contralateral motoneuron is of larger amplitude than the ipsilateral one so that spikes in either motoneuron must activate separate but symmetrical pathways. A single spike may cause multiple waves in either motoneuron, each separated by intervals equal to the wingbeat period (Fig. 3). In the pathway must be neurons capable of reverberation.A spike in a 113 motoneuron causes a delayed excitation of the ipsilateral 127 motoneuron so that its membrane potential is lowered antiphasically to that of 113 (Fig. 17). A spike in a 127 motoneuron has no effect on the 113 motoneurons. In flight these pathways causing delayed excitation may co-ordinate the motoneurons.The left and right 113 motoneurons receive common synaptic inputs from at least two sources (Fig. 8). These occur as bursts of epsp's at intervals approximately equal to or multiples of the wingbeat period and in the absence of flight. Epsp's of sufficient amplitude cause a spike in the motoneuron which is in the correct phase in the flight pattern relative to any other active motoneurons (Fig. 9). During sustained flight epsp's contribute to the wave of depolarization that the motoneuron undergoes at each wingbeat (Fig. 11). In the absence of the epsp's the motoneuron does not oscillate on its own. During tethered flight in Drosophila melanogaster, spike activity of the second basalar flight-control muscle (M.b2) is correlated with an increase in both the ipsilateral wing beat amplitude and the ipsilateral flight force. The frequency of muscle spikes within a burst is about 100 Hz, or 1 spike for every two wing beat cycles. When M.b2 is active, its spikes tend to occur within a comparatively narrow phase band of the wing beat cycle. To understand the functional role of this phase-lock of firing in the control of flight forces, we stimulated M.b2 in selected phases of the wing beat cycle and recorded the effect on the ipsilateral wing beat amplitude. Varying the phase timing of the stimulus had a significant effect on the wing beat amplitude. A maximum increase of wing beat amplitude was obtained by stimulating M.b2 at the beginning of the upstroke or about 1 ms prior to the narrow phase band in which the muscle spikes typically occur during flight. Assuming a delay of 1 ms between the stimulation of the motor nerve and muscle activation, these results indicate that M.b2 is activated at an instant of the stroke cycle that produces the greatest effect on wing beat amplitude.  相似文献

A device has been constructed allowing the simultaneous transmission of two separate electrical signals in unrestrained small animals. We employed this device to investigate the motor output in free-flying locusts. The activation pattern of several combinations of different muscles was recorded, including bilateral symmetric muscles and pairs of antagonists. Particular attention was paid to the recruitment of a specific set of flight muscles in both winged segments during rolling manoeuvres. The relationship of the muscle activation with wing movement was analysed in combination with a high-speed video-monitoring. The muscles are activated in advance of the relevant stroke directions, in opposition to previous studies of tethered flying locusts. During turning manoeuvres a statistically significant difference in timing of the bilateral symmetric muscles is not apparent; this contrasts with the distinct difference revealed for the bilateral wing movement. It is discussed that rolling might rely on the fine tuned interaction of several major flight muscles or on the precise activation of a specific wing hinge muscle. Correspondence with investigations of bird flight is discussed.  相似文献

We have monitored the patterns of activation of five muscles during flight initiation of Drosophila melanogaster: the tergotrochanteral muscle (a mesothoracic leg extensor), dorsal longitudinal muscles #3, #4 and #6 (wing depressors), and dorsal ventral muscle #Ic (a wing elevator). Stimulation of a pair of large descending interneurons, the giant fibers, activates these muscles in a stereotypic pattern and is thought to evoke escape flight initiation. To investigate the role of the giant fibers in coordinating flight initiation, we have compared the patterns of muscle activation evoked by giant fiber stimulation with those during flight initiations executed voluntarily and evoked by visual and olfactory stimuli. Visually elicited flight initiations exhibit patterns of muscle activation indistinguishable from those evoked by giant fiber stimulation. Olfactory-induced flight initiations exhibit patterns of muscle activation similar to those during voluntary flight initiations. Yet only some benzaldehyde-induced and voluntary flight initiations exhibit patterns of muscle activation similar to those evoked by giant fiber stimulation. These results indicate that visually elicited flight initiations are coordinated by the giant fiber circuit. The feline anterior sartorius is a long strap-like muscle composed of short muscle fibers. Nerve branches that enter this muscle contain the axons of motor units whose constituent muscle fibers are distributed asymmetrically within the muscle. In the present study, twitch and tetanic isometric contractions were evoked by stimulating individual nerve branches while muscle force was recorded and intramuscular length changes were monitored optically by the movement of reflective markers on the muscle. Contractions elicited by stimulating the parent nerve produced little change in the positions of the surface markers. Contractions elicited by stimulating the proximally or distally directed nerve branches caused the muscle to shorten at the end closest to the nerve branch and lengthen at the opposite end. Some muscles were supplied by a centrally directed nerve branch whose stimulation produced variable effects: in some cases a portion of the muscle shortened whereas the rest lengthened, but in other cases, the positions of the surface markers showed little change. The intramuscular length changes produced by stimulating single nerve branches were greater during isometric contractions at short whole-muscle lengths than at long whole-muscle lengths. The twitch and tetanic length-tension relationships obtained by stimulating the individual nerve branches were not congruent with the length-tension relationship produced when the parent nerve was stimulated. At short whole-muscle lengths, stimulation of a single nerve branch generated only a small fraction of the force that could be generated by the muscle when the parent nerve was stimulated. As whole-muscle length increased, an increased fraction of total muscle force could be generated by stimulating a single nerve branch. The results suggest that a complex relationship between passive and active elements contributes to the total muscle force and depends on the distribution of active and passive muscle units throughout the muscle.  相似文献

Gliding flight is a postural activity which requires the wings to be held in a horizontal position to support the weight of the body. Postural behaviors typically utilize isometric contractions in which no change in length takes place. Due to longer actin-myosin interactions, slow contracting muscle fibers represent an economical means for this type of contraction. In specialized soaring birds, such as vultures and pelicans, a deep layer of the pectoralis muscle, composed entirely of slow fibers, is believed to perform this function. Muscles involved in gliding posture were examined in California gulls (Larus californicus) and tested for the presence of slow fibers using myosin ATPase histochemistry and antibodies. Surprisingly small numbers of slow fibers were found in the M. extensor metacarpi radialis, M. coracobrachialis cranialis, and M. coracobrachialis caudalis, which function in wrist extension, wing protraction, and body support, respectively. The low number of slow fibers in these muscles and the absence of slow fibers in muscles associated with wing extension and primary body support suggest that gulls do not require slow fibers for their postural behaviors. Gulls also lack the deep belly to the pectoralis found in other gliding birds. Since bird muscle is highly oxidative, we hypothesize that fast muscle fibers may function to maintain wing position during gliding flight in California gulls. J. Summary Temporal patterns of activation of flight muscles were recorded by means of wires placed extracellularly in thoracic muscles. In the five species of hawkmoths studied, wingstrokes of small amplitude were produced during a preflight warm-up by synchronous contractions of certain groups of muscles which are antagonists in flight. The main depressor muscle, the dorsal longitudinal, was excited in synchrony with some or all of the indirect elevator muscles. Three direct muscles, the subalar, basalar and third axillary muscles, were usually excited out of phase with the dorsal longitudinal muscle. However, details of the motor pattern varied from species to species. During fixed flight phase changes comparable in magnitude to those which occur during the transition from warm-up to flight were observed in Manduca sexta and Smerinthus cerisyi. The results (summarized in Table 2) suggest that a variety of warm-up patterns evolved within the Sphingidae as modifications of a common mechanism generating flight motor patterns.I thank Dr. Harry Lange for assistance in the initial collecting of Manduca sexta and for identifying specimens of this species.  相似文献

Oxidative stress is a putative factor responsible for reducing function and increasing apoptotic signaling in skeletal muscle with aging. This study examined the contribution and functional significance of the xanthine oxidase enzyme as a potential source of oxidant production in aged skeletal muscle during repetitive in situ electrically stimulated isometric contractions. Xanthine oxidase activity was inhibited in young adult and aged mice via a subcutaneously placed time-release (2.5 mg/day) allopurinol pellet, 7 days before the start of in situ electrically stimulated isometric contractions. Gastrocnemius muscles were electrically activated with 20 maximal contractions for 3 consecutive days. Xanthine oxidase activity was 65% greater in the gastrocnemius muscle of aged mice compared to young mice. Xanthine oxidase activity also increased after in situ electrically stimulated isometric contractions in muscles from both young (33%) and aged (28%) mice, relative to contralateral noncontracted muscles. Allopurinol attenuated the exercise-induced increase in oxidative stress, but it did not affect the elevated basal level of oxidative stress that was associated with aging. In addition, inhibition of xanthine oxidase activity decreased caspase-3 activity, but it had no effect on other markers of mitochondrial-associated apoptosis. Our results show that compared to control conditions, suppression of xanthine oxidase activity by allopurinol reduced xanthine oxidase activity, H2O2 levels, lipid peroxidation, and caspase-3 activity; prevented the in situ electrically stimulated isometric contraction-induced loss of glutathione; prevented the increase in catalase and copper-zinc superoxide dismutase activities; and increased maximal isometric force in the plantar flexor muscles of aged mice after repetitive electrically evoked contractions.  相似文献

The flightless bug Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.) is polymorphic for both wing length and flight muscle development. The developed flight muscles of macropterous adults of both sexes first enlarge their volume during the first 5 days after adult emergence, but are then histolyzed in all males and females older than 10 and 14 days, respectively. The flight muscles of brachypterous adult males and females are underdeveloped due to their arrested growth. The total protein content of histolyzed dorsolongitudinal flight muscles from 21-day-old macropterous adults of both sexes is lower than that of developed dorsolongitudinal flight muscles in 5-10-days-old macropterous bugs, but substantially higher than the protein content of underdeveloped dorsolongitudinal flight muscles from adult brachypters. Histolyzed dorsolongitudinal flight muscles differ from the developed ones by decreased quantities of 18 electrophoretically separated proteins. Histolysis of developed dorsolongitudinal flight muscles is accompanied by significant decreases in citrate synthase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and β-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase enzyme activities and an increase in alanine aminotransferase activity, and can be precociously induced by application of a juvenile hormone analogue. This is the first report of flight muscle polymorphism, histolysis of developed flight muscles and its endocrine control in insects displaying non-functional wing polymorphism.  相似文献

为探讨丽斗蟋Velarifictorus ornatus翅二型个体飞行与生殖发育间生理权衡的内分泌控制机理, 本研究调查了外用保幼激素Ⅲ(JH-III)与早熟素Ⅰ(P-I)对丽斗蟋翅二型个体飞行肌与生殖发育的影响。结果表明: 成虫羽化后当日分别注射1, 5, 10和25 μg保幼激素7 d后, 显著促进了丽斗蟋长翅雌虫卵巢发育, 卵巢重量分别从对照组的16.8±11.4 mg/♀增加到43.9±10.7, 33.6±14.0, 56.8±7.6和 39.3±30.7 mg/♀; 但对卵巢内怀卵量无显著影响。相反, 外用保幼激素则诱发飞行肌降解, 1, 5和10 μg JH-III处理组飞行肌重量分别下降为12.9±4.7, 11.7±4.8和8.8±0.8 mg/♀, 显著低于对照组飞行肌重量(17.7±1.6 mg)。对短翅雌虫注射P-I时, 当注射的剂量超过50 μg/♀时, 能够显著抑制卵巢发育, 而低于50 μg/♀时则对卵巢发育无明显影响。外用JH-III对丽斗蟋长翅雄虫飞行肌、 精巢、 附腺的发育无明显影响; 外用P-I对短翅型雄虫精巢与附腺的发育也无明显影响。因此, 丽斗蟋翅二型雌虫与雄虫的飞行肌与生殖器官的内分泌控制机理可能存在差异。  相似文献

During effortful unilateral contractions, muscle activation is not limited to the target muscles but activity is also observed in contralateral muscles. The amount of this associated activity is depressed in a fatigued muscle, even after correction for fatigue-related changes in maximal force. In the present experiments, we aimed to compare fatigue-related changes in associated activity vs. parameters that are used as markers for changes in central nervous system (CNS) excitability. Subjects performed brief maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) with the index finger in abduction direction before and after fatiguing protocols. We followed changes in MVCs, associated activity, motor-evoked potentials (MEP; transcranial magnetic stimulation), maximal compound muscle potentials (M waves), and superimposed twitches (double pulse) for 20 min after the fatiguing protocols. During the fatiguing protocols, associated activity increased in contralateral muscles, whereas afterwards the associated force was reduced in the fatigued muscle. This force reduction was significantly larger than the decline in MVC. However, associated activity (force and electromyography) remained depressed for only 5-10 min, whereas the MVCs stayed depressed for over 20 min. These decreases were accompanied by a reduction in MEP, MVC electromyography activity, and voluntary activation in the fatigued muscle. According to these latter markers, the decrease in CNS motor excitability lasted much longer than the depression in associated activity. Differential effects of fatigue on (associated) submaximal vs. maximal contractions might contribute to these differences in postfatigue behavior. However, we cannot exclude differences in processes that are specific to either voluntary or to associated contractions.  相似文献

1. The connexions between stretch receptors of the wings and motoneurones innervating flight muscles have been studied anatomically and physiologically. 2. Filling with cobaltous chloride shows that the single neurone of a forewing stretch receptor has a complex pattern of branches within the mesothoracic ganglion and branches which extend into the pro- and meta-thoracic ganglia. The single neurone of a hindwing stretch receptor has extensive branches in the metathoracic ganglion and branches in themesothoracic ganglion. The branches of both receptors are confined to the ipsilateral halves of the ganglia. 3. A stretch receptor gives information about the velocity and extent of elevation of a wing. 4. Each spike of a forewing stretch receptor casuses an EPSP in ipsilateral mesothoracic depressor motoneurones and an IPSP in elevators. The connexions are thought to be monosynaptic for the following reasons. The EPSPs in the first basalar (depressor) motoneurone follow each spike of the stretch receptor at a frequency of 125 Hz and with a constant latency of about 1 msec. In a Ringer solution containing 20 mM-Mg2+ the amplitude EPSP declines gradually. The IPSP'S upon elevators have similar properties but occur with a latency of 4-6 msec. 5. The connexions therefore comprise a monosynaptic negative feed-back loop; elevation of the wing excites the stretch receptor which then inhibits the elevator motoneurones and excites the depressors. 6. A hindwing stretch receptor synapses upon metathoracic flight motoneurones in the same way, causing EPSPs in depressor and IPSPs in elevator motoneurones. 7. No connexions of either fore- or hindwing stretch receptors have been found with contralateral flight motoneurones. 8. Interganglionic connexions are made by both receptors. For example, both fore- and hindwing stretch receptors cause EPSPs upon the meso- and metathoracic first basalar motoneurones. 9. Stimulation of the axon of a stretch receptor with groups of three stimuli repeated every 50-100 msec thus simulating the pattern which it shows during flight, causes subthreshold waves of depolarization in depressor motoneurones. When summed with an unpatterned input, the stretch receptor is able to influence the production of spikes in motoneurones on each cycle. During flight, it is expected that the stretch receptor will influence the time at which a motoneurone will spike and hence have an effect on the amplitude of the upstroke and upon the phase relationship between spikes of motoneurones.  相似文献

Desert locusts, tethered on a roll torque meter and flying in a wind tunnel are surrounded by an artificial horizon (Fig. 1). Flight motor activity and movement of forewings are monitored continuously. Movements of the artificial horizon elicit roll manoeuvers of the animal with latencies of several seconds; concomitant changes in flight motor pattern and wing movement can be correlated with the animal's roll angle and roll torque. Flight sequences with constant torque and roll angle (steady state) have been analysed with the following results. Wing Kinematics. A phase difference between the movements of the forewings on either side is correlated with roll angle (Fig. 3). Pronation of a forewing is always greater on the side to which the animal rolls, i.e. on the side that produces less lift (Fig. 5). In some experiments the slope of the wing tip path is also decreased (Fig. 5). In both cases, the aerodynamic angle of attack is decreased and the forewing on this side produces less lift. In most experiments, changes in pronation are less pronounced in the contralateral wing (Fig. 11). All factors contribute to a net roll torque that sustains the animal's roll angle. Other kinematic parameters of forewing movement, e.g. wing stroke amplitude, were not found to be correlated with roll angle and torque (Fig. 4). Motor Pattern. Activity of several flight muscles (depressors M97, M98, M99, and M129; elevators M83, M84, and M90) was investigated for changes in burst length and temporal coordination in response to roll stimuli. Most flight muscles fired only once per wing beat cycle in our preparations. Thus, burst length was not found to be correlated with roll angle. Time intervals of firing between all muscle pairs investigated change in correlation with the torque and roll angle (Fig. 9).All mesothoracic muscles are active earlier-relative to the ipsilateral metathoracic subalar muscle M129-during roll to the ipsilateral side than during roll to the contralateral side. Correlations Between Motor and Movement Pattern. The phase of muscle firing within the wing beat cycle varies with roll angle (roll torque). The first basalar M97 and second tergosternal M84 muscles, when referenced e.g. to the upper (M97) or lower (M84) reversal point of the wing tip trajectory, are active earlier on the side the animal turns to (Fig. 10). The onset of the first basalar M97 relative to the beginning of downstroke is correlated with maximum pronation and roll angle (Fig. 11). Mechanisms of Lift Control. Wing pronation, which is very important for lift production is controlled by the central nervous system by altering the phase of muscle activity within the wing beat cycle.  相似文献

The influence of stimulation frequency on efficiency (= total work output/high-energy phosphate consumption) was studied using in situ medial gastrocnemius muscle tendon complexes of the rat. The muscles performed 20 repeated concentric contractions (2/s) at 34 degrees C. During these repeated contractions, the muscle was stimulated via the severed sciatic nerve with either 60, 90, or 150 Hz. The muscle was freeze-clamped immediately after these contractions, and high-energy phosphate consumption was determined by measuring intramuscular chemical change relative to control muscles. The average values (+/-SD) of efficiency calculated for 60, 90, and 150 Hz were 18.5 +/- 1.5 (n = 7), 18.6 +/- 1.5 (n = 9), and 14.7 +/- 1.3 mJ/micromol phosphate (n = 9). The results indicate that the efficiency of the muscles that were submaximally activated (60 or 90 Hz) was higher (+26%, P < 0.05) than that of those maximally activated (150 Hz). Additional experiments showed that the low efficiency at maximal activation levels is unlikely to be the result of a higher energy turnover by the Ca2+ -ATPase relative to the total energy turnover. Muscle specific maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) are commonly used to elicit reference amplitudes to normalize electromyographic signals (EMG). It has been questioned whether this is appropriate for normalizing EMG from dynamic contractions. This study compares EMG amplitude when shoulder muscle activity from dynamic contractions is normalized to isometric and isokinetic maximal excitation as well as a hybrid approach currently used in our laboratory. Anterior, middle and posterior deltoid, upper and lower trapezius, pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi and infraspinatus were monitored during (1) manually resisted MVICs, and (2) maximum voluntary dynamic concentric contractions (MVDC) on an isokinetic dynamometer. Dynamic contractions were performed (a) at 30°/s about the longitudinal, frontal and sagittal axes of the shoulder, and (b) during manual bi-rotation of a tilted wheel at 120°/s. EMG from the wheel task was normalized to the maximum excitation from (i) the muscle specific MVIC, (ii) from any MVIC (MVICALL), (iii) for any MVDC, (iv) from any exertion (maximum experimental excitation, MEE). Mean EMG from the wheel task was up to 45% greater when normalized to muscle specific isometric contractions (method i) than when normalized to MEE (method iv). Seventy-five percent of MEE’s occurred during MVDCs. This study presents an 20 useful and effective process for obtaining the greatest excitation from the shoulder muscles when normalizing dynamic efforts.  相似文献

Regulation of protein translation through Akt and the downstream mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is an important component of the cellular response to hypertrophic stimuli. It has been proposed that 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation during muscle contraction may limit the hypertrophic response to resistance-type exercise by inhibiting translational signaling. However, experimental manipulation of AMPK activity during such a stimulus has not been attempted. Therefore, we investigated whether AMPK activation can attenuate the downstream signaling response of the Akt/mTOR pathway to electrically stimulated lengthening muscle contractions. Extensor digitorum longus muscles (n = 8/group) were subjected to a 22-min bout of lengthening contractions by high-frequency sciatic nerve electrical stimulation (STIM) in young adult (8 mo) Fischer 344 x Brown Norway male rats. Forty minutes before electrical stimulation, rats were subcutaneously injected with saline or 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-4-ribofuranoside (AICAR; 1 mg/g body wt), an AMPK activator. Stimulated and contralateral resting muscles were removed at 0, 20, and 40 min post-STIM, and AMPK, acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC), Akt, eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein (4E-BP1), 70-kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K1), and eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2) phosphorylations were assessed by Western blot. AICAR treatment increased (P < or = 0.05) post-STIM AMPK (Thr172) and ACC phosphorylation (Ser79/221), inhibited post-STIM S6K1 (Thr389) and 4E-BP1 (gel shift) phosphorylation, and elevated post-STIM eEF2 phosphorylation (Thr56). These findings suggest that translational signaling downstream of Akt/mTOR can be inhibited after lengthening contractions when preceded by AMPK activation and that energetic stress may be antagonistic to the hypertrophic translational signaling response to loaded muscle contractions.  相似文献

Flies achieve supreme flight maneuverability through a small set of miniscule steering muscles attached to the wing base. The fast flight maneuvers arise from precisely timed activation of the steering muscles and the resulting subtle modulation of the wing stroke. In addition, slower modulation of wing kinematics arises from changes in the activity of indirect flight muscles in the thorax. We investigated if these modulations can be described as a superposition of a limited number of elementary deformations of the wing stroke that are under independent physiological control. Using a high-speed computer vision system, we recorded the wing motion of tethered flying fruit flies for up to 12 000 consecutive wing strokes at a sampling rate of 6250 Hz. We then decomposed the joint motion pattern of both wings into components that had the minimal mutual information (a measure of statistical dependence). In 100 flight segments measured from 10 individual flies, we identified 7 distinct types of frequently occurring least-dependent components, each defining a kinematic pattern (a specific deformation of the wing stroke and the sequence of its activation from cycle to cycle). Two of these stroke deformations can be associated with the control of yaw torque and total flight force, respectively. A third deformation involves a change in the downstroke-to-upstroke duration ratio, which is expected to alter the pitch torque. A fourth kinematic pattern consists in the alteration of stroke amplitude with a period of 2 wingbeat cycles, extending for dozens of cycles. Our analysis indicates that these four elementary kinematic patterns can be activated mutually independently, and occur both in isolation and in linear superposition. The results strengthen the available evidence for independent control of yaw torque, pitch torque, and total flight force. Our computational method facilitates systematic identification of novel patterns in large kinematic datasets.  相似文献
