Three new species of Myrtaceae (Calyptranthes bracteata, Eugenia gonglycocarpa, andMyrcia rupta) from northeastern South America are described and illustrated, and a new combination (Eugenia tetramera) is proposed. The closed-calyx and the completely or partially fused cotyledons ofMyrcia rupta, unusual features for the genus, are discussed and compared with related species inMyrcia andMarlierea.  相似文献

The interstitial annelid Parenterodrilus taenioides from coral sands of the island of Moorea (French Polynesia) is a mouthless species characterized by a vestigial non-functioning alimentary canal and a distinctive body shape. It is the only known annelid that has a non-functioning gut and no symbiotic bacteria. Parenterodrilus is thought to represent the sister group of the well-known taxon Protodrilus, generally recognized as Protodrilidae. An ultrastructural study revealed that, as in Protodrilus spp., the males of P. taenioides have lateral organs, i.e. paired epidermal, glandular and ciliated grooves, in the anterior body region where the sperm ducts are located. As in Protodrilus two types of spermatozoa were found, commonly called euspermatozoa and paraspermatozoa. Both types are filiform and the euspermatozoa, like those in Protodrilus spp., have a characteristic midpiece reinforced by symmetrically arranged supporting structures and reduced mitochondria. The ultrastructure of the spermatozoa in P. taenioides and Protodrilus spp. is basically the same but the species can be distinguished from each other on the basis of particular structural details of spermatozoa and the pattern of lateral organs. The two types of spermatozoa and the epidermal lateral organs are unique features of these two taxa; as they are not present in any other potentially related taxon, such as Saccocirrus and Protodriloides, they very likely represent autapomorphies of Protodrilidae. In Protodrilus spp. spermatophores are deposited on the epidermis of the females, whereupon sperm are released and penetrate the body wall. Since in polychaetes the structure of the sperm is correlated with the fertilization biology, the similar structure of sperm suggests that sperm transfer and fertilization are very probably the same in P. taenioides as in Protodrilus.This paper was presented at the symposium Morphology, molecules, evolution and phylogeny in Polychaeta and related taxa held in Haus Ohrbeck, Osnabrück, in September 2002, and is dedicated to Prof. Dr. Wilfried Westheide on the occasion of his 65th birthday  相似文献

In a previous study (Svirski et al., 1993), it was found that growth inhibition ofGracilaria spp., when cultured in the presence ofUlva cf.lactuca, was not due to shading or nutrient depletion, but seemed to be caused by competition for inorganic carbon or some type of allelopathy. In the present study, we attempted to differentiate between these two possible influences by (1) growing the two algae in biculture under various conditions, but keeping inorganic carbon levels constant and measuring net photosynthesis, respiration and growth rates, and by (2) measuring growth rates ofGracilaria spp. in the presence of extracts derived from media previously used to growUlva cf.lactuca.Both net photosynthesis and growth rates ofGracilaria spp. in biculture were inhibited, despite CO2 (and also HCO3 ) levels being kept constantly high in the culture media. It is likely that these responses were due to markedly enhanced rates of dark respiration inGracilaria spp. when grown together withUlva cf.lactuca. Growth ofGracilaria spp. was also inhibited by extracts derived from seawater in whichUlva cf.lactuca had previously been grown. The strong inhibition by ethyl acetate and chloroform extracts indicate an allelopathic effect onGracilaria spp.  相似文献

Females of ormiine tachinids fly to their hosts' calling songs and deposit larvae on the host or nearby. Two species,Ormia ochracea (Bigot) andO. depleta (Wiedemann), were reared for at least 8 generations, making them the first ormiines to be laboratory-propagated. Both were reared on natural hosts:Gryllus spp. field crickets (principallyG. rubens) forO. ochracea, andScapteriscus spp. mole crickets forO. depleta. Commercially rearedAcheta domesticus tested as hosts were less satisfactory. Hosts were parasitized manually or by confinement with flies or planidia (infective larvae). Transparent, cylindrical, sleeved cages were designed to accommodate parasitized hosts and pupae and adults ofO. ochracea. Cages were joined to allowO. ochracea to cycle through its stages with minimum handling and care. Parasitized hosts and pupae ofO. depleta were held in containers of damp sand; adults were held in cages developed forO. ochracea. Adults of both species were maintained on applesauce, sugar cubes, powdered milk, and water. The life cycle ofO. ochracea was about 31 days and ofO. depleta about 36 days, with the principal difference being the time required for planidia to complete development. InO. ochracea the adults emerged synchronously but inO. depleta males preceded females. In both species sex ratio was generally I: 1 and females lived slightly longer than males.O. depleta from our laboratory colony have been released for biological control of mole crickets.   相似文献

Chromosome numbers and karyomorphological characters have been investigated inPamphilia andStyrax (Styracaceae). Counted for the first time in the genus, two species ofPamphilia were found to have 2n = 16. The twoStyrax spp. investigated share withPamphilia the same chromosome number, a peculiar condensation behaviour of the chromosomes (Fig. 1a–c) and the same type of semi-reticulate interphase nucleus, results which indicate a close relationship of the two genera. The base number inStyracaceae is probably x = 8 (2n = 2x = 16) with stabilized triploids inHalesia andPterostyrax (2n = 3x = 24). A preliminary comparison withSapotaceae andEbenaceae does not allow a general karyological characterisation of the orderEbenales.  相似文献

Pollination of the alpine herbDianthus glacialis was studied in a population in the Swiss Alps in 1991 and 1992. Only one insect species,Zygaena exulans (Lepidoptera), was observed to visit the flowers ofD. glacialis. Pollen loads onZ. exulans indicate that it is an effective pollinator ofD. glacialis. In 1991,Z. exulans frequently visited flowers ofD. glacialis. However, in 1992 almost no visits could be observed. Despite the occurrence of pollinators and the conspicuous flowers ofD. glacialis, there are strong indications that this plant is mainly selfing: (1) anthesis of individual flowers is short (c. one and a half days), (2) protandry, although pronounced in otherDianthus spp., is absent, (3) nectar production is low, (4) odour production is weak, (5) seed production by spontaneous selfing is high, (6) seed set in emasculated flowers is extremely low and (7) the seed/ovule ratio is distinctly higher inD. glacialis than in outcrossing plants.—Selfing inD. glacialis could have evolved under a shortage of pollinators during the glaciation periods. Present levels of cross-pollination byZ. exulans have apparently not been sufficient to reverse the pollination mechanism ofD. glacialis from selfing to outcrossing.  相似文献

Intergeneric crosses were made between representatives of the genomically-defined generaElymus, Agropyron, Elytrigia, Pseudoroegneria, andThinopyrum. The genomic constitution ofElytrigia repens, the type species ofElytrigia, is shown to be SSH, a genomic combination otherwise found only inElymus. The S genome ofPseudoroegneria has almost always a dominant influence on the morphology of the taxa of which it is a component.Wang (1989) showed that the J genome inThinopyrum and the S genome have considerable homoeology, with a mean c-value of 0.35 in diploid SJ hybrids. A genetic coherence from S to SJe, Je, JeJb, and Jb can be expected, agreeing with the continuous morphologic variation pattern observed. Because of the absence of morphological discontinuities between the taxa,Pseudoroegneria (S),Elymus (SH, SY, sometimes with additional genomes),Elytrigia (SSH, SSHX), andThinopyrum (SJ, SJJ, J) are best treated as a single genus,Elymus, following the generic concept ofMelderis in Flora Europaea and Flora of Turkey. The basic genomic constituents ofElymus will then be the S and/or J genomes.Agropyron, with diploids, tetraploids, and hexaploids based on the P genome is morphologically distinct from other genera inTriticeae. In a few species ofElymus andPseudoroegneria, a P genome is an additional constituent. In these cases the P genome has a negligible morphological influence. Therefore, it seems reasonable to maintainAgropyron as a separate genus.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of ten SP11 and nine SRK alleles in Raphanus sativus were determined, and deduced amino acid sequences were compared with those of Brassica SP11 and SRK. The amino acid sequence identity of class-I SP11s in R. sativus was about 30% on average, the highest being 52.2%, while that of the S domain of class-I SRK was 77.0% on average and ranged from 70.8% to 83.9%. These values were comparable to those of SP11 and SRK in Brassica oleracea and B. rapa. SP11 of R. sativus S-21 was found to be highly similar to SP11 of B. rapa S-9 (89.5% amino acid identity), and SRK of R. sativus S-21 was similar to SRK of B. rapa S-9 (91.0%). SP11 and SRK of R. sativus S-19 were also similar to SP11 and SRK of B. oleracea S-20, respectively. These similarities of both SP11 and SRK alleles between R. sativus and Brassica suggest that these S haplotype pairs originated from the same ancestral S haplotypes.  相似文献

Ribosomal DNA genes fromP. deltoides have been cloned and specific sequences of the 25 S and 18 S rDNA region, labelled by digoxigenin, have been used to determine the rDNA structure ofPopulus tremula, P. fremontii, P. maximowiczii, P. yunnanensis, P. nigra, P. wislizenii, P. alba. The restriction maps of the coding region appeared to be similar among the examined species and with those ofP. deltoides andP. trichocarpa, reported in a previous paper. Inter- and intraspecific variation in rDNA repeat unit length have been revealed after EcoRI digestions. SstI and XbaI restriction sites have been found at different positions in the IGS of some species. The polymorphic fragments generated by SstI digestion allowed the identification of the hybrid origin of some genotypes. The number of rDNA genes in the genome ofP. deltoides has been estimated to be about 2 000 copies. The taxonomic positions ofRetzia, Desfontainia, andNicodemia have been much discussed, and all three genera have been included inLoganiaceae (Gentianales). We have made a cladistic analysis ofrbcL gene sequences to determine the relationships of these taxa toGentianales. Four newrbcL sequences are presented; i.e., ofRetzia, Desfontainia, Diervilla (Caprifoliaceae), andEuthystachys (Stilbaceae). Our results show thatRetzia, Desfontainia, andNicodemia are not closely related toLoganiaceae or theGentianales. Retzia is most closely related toEuthystachys and is better included inStilbaceae. The positions ofDesfontainia andNicodemia are not settled, butDesfontainia shows affinity for theDipsacales s.l. andNicodemia for theLamiales s.l.  相似文献

Various aspects of the reproductive biology of the Andean-disjunct genusRetanilla (DC.) Brongn. were studied in populations ofR. trinervia andR. ephedra located in central Chile and ofR. patagonica in southern Argentina. Flowering extends from -austral- winter (early spring inR. patagonica) to early summer. The small, white, entomophilous flowers are incompletely protandrous and last four to five days. A weak pleasant odor along with nectar and pollen attract thirty-seven diurnal insect species, ten of which are probable pollinators: these include the honey bee, eight species of solitary bees pertaining toAnthophoridae (1 sp.),Colletidae (3 spp.) andHalictidae (4 spp.), and a nemestrinid fly. Although flower morphology and individual flower phenology do not fully prevent self-pollination (and geitonogamy can easily take place), the level of autogamy is low. Therefore, some self-incompatibility mechanism seems operative inRetanilla. Fruit set of open-pollinated flowers is extremely low, with a maximal value of c. 3% inR. patagonica. In this species, ripe fruits contain on average 1.37 viable seeds. Predispersal (maternal) reproductive success (percent ovules becoming viable seeds) is 2.3%. For medium to full-sized individuals this corresponds to c. 4600 potential offspring per year. As presently known,Retanilla is a reproductively uniform group, in which the Andean disjunction seems to have exerted no particular impact, which is consistent with the view that pollination generalization exerts some stabilizing influence on floral morphology and other reproductive traits.Retanilla expresses a basic rhamnacean set of traits (including protandry and self-incompatibility) showing also high pollen production and secondary pollen presentation. The latter two traits seem characteristic of theRetanilla-Trevoa clade, suggesting that a trend to increased male effort and, perhaps, dependence upon polleneating has evolved within the tribe Colletieae.  相似文献

Sex-determining cascades are supposed to have evolved in a retrograde manner from bottom to top. Wilkins 1995 hypothesis finds support from our comparative studies in Drosophila melanogaster and Musca domestica, two dipteran species that separated some 120 million years ago. The sex-determining cascades in these flies differ at the level of the primary sex-determining signal and their targets, Sxl in Drosophila and F in Musca. Here we present evidence that they converge at the level of the terminal regulator, doublesex (dsx), which conveys the selected sexual fate to the differentiation genes. The dsx homologue in Musca, Md-dsx, encodes male-specific (MdDSXM) and female-specific (MdDSXF) protein variants which correspond in structure to those in Drosophila. Sex-specific regulation of Md-dsx is controlled by the switch gene F via a splicing mechanism that is similar but in some relevant aspects different from that in Drosophila. MdDSXF expression can activate the vitellogenin genes in Drosophila and Musca males, and MdDSXM expression in Drosophila females can cause male-like pigmentation of posterior tergites, suggesting that these Musca dsx variants are conserved not only in structure but also in function. Furthermore, downregulation of Md-dsx activity in Musca by injecting dsRNA into embryos leads to intersexual differentiation of the gonads. These results strongly support a role of Md-dsx as the final regulatory gene in the sex-determining hierarchy of the housefly.Edited by D. Tautz  相似文献

Fruit-bodies of Agaricales are known to show positive phototropism during the early stage of development, but negative gravitropism at the later stage after the onset of basidiospore formation. However, when exposed to light from below, the fruit-bodies ofTephrocybe tesquorum andCoprinus spp. grew downward through all stages of development, even after the onset of basidiospore formation. Primordium formation, fruit-body development and basidiospore formation were not disturbed under such conditions. In these downward-growing fruit-bodies, gills stood straight upward. InT. tesquorum, caps often became swollen and stipes sometimes became twisted anticlockwise, contrary to those in light from above, while such behaviours were not observed inCoprinus spp.  相似文献

A preliminary account of Entolomataceae from Costa Rica is presented. Three new taxa are described, two inClitopilus, one inRhodocybe, and three new combinations are proposed inInocephalus. Five taxa ofClitopilus are reported for the first time from Costa Rica and a key to species is provided. Four species ofRhodocybe are discussed and a key to the six species known from Costa Rica is also provided.Alboleptonia earlei, Inocephalus murraii, Inocephalus quadratum, Rhodocybe incarnata andRhodocybe pseudonitellina are now known to occur in Costa Rica.  相似文献

Except for a robust habit, two specimens ofAloina collected in northern Argentina are morphologically similar and are tentatively attributed toA. rigida (Hedw.) Limpr. This represents an addition to the moss flora of Argentina. In addition, two specimens ofAloinella represent significant findings: one shows features that agree with those given in the protologue forA. galeata (Müll. Hal.) Broth. and is treated here asA. galeata var.galeata to show the relationship toA. galeta var.andina (Delgad.) Delgadillo & Schiavone stat. nov.; the other belongs inA. cucullifera (Mitt.) Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer regions 1 & 2 (nrDNA ITS) including the intervening 5.8S region were analyzed cladistically for 43 individuals of 35 species ofScaphyglottis s.l. plus two outgroup taxa. Low levels of sequence divergence do not allow estimation of relationships among most clades, but the analyses indicate that four segregate genera (Hexisea Lindl.,Reichenbachanthus Barb. Rodr.,Hexadesmia Brogn., andPlatyglottis coriacea L.O. Williams) are embedded within a broad paraphyleticScaphyglottis. This broadly definedScaphyglottis sensu Dressler is characterized within Laeliinae by the usual presence of superposed growth habit and the presence of a column foot. In order to accommodate species formerly placed inPlatyglottis andReichenbachanthus, three new combinations are made inScaphyglottis:Scaphyglottis brasiliensis (Schltr.) Dressler,S. coriacea (L. O. In 1981 the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Biological Control of Weeds Laboratory (BCWL, Rome, Italy) started investigating the host specificity ofP. inspersa as a candidate for biological control ofC. diffusa andC. maculosa, and in 1985 the investigation was completed at the USDA Biological Control of Weeds Laboratory at Albany, California. Thirty five species of plants in the familyAsteraceae and 23 other species in 8 related families were tested. Larval survival beyond 1st instar occurred only onCentaurea spp. except for 1 larva found inCnicus benedictus L.P. inspersa is stenophagous onCentaurea, therefore, a good candidate for introduction into North America.   相似文献

Summary Seedlings ofCasuarina spp. andAllocasuarina spp. were grown from seed in the greenhouse and inoculated with a nodule suspension fromC. equisetifolia. Plants ofCasuarina spp. nodulated regularly and were effective in nitrogen-fixation. Only one species ofAllocasuariona, A. lehmanniana formed root nodules. Using these plants as source of inoculum, the isolation of a newFrankia sp. HFPA11I1 (HFP022 801) was made and the strain was grown in pure culture.Frankia sp. HFPA11I1 grows well in a defined medium and shows typical morphological characteristics. In media lacking combined nitrogen, the filamentours bacterium forms terminal vesicles in abundance and differentiaties large intrahyphal or terminal sporangia containing numerous spores. This strain, used as inoculum, nodulates effectively seedlings ofC. equisietifolia andC. cunninghamiana, forming nodules with verically-growing nodule roots. Although effective in acetylene reduction, the endophyte within the nodules is filamentous and lacks veiscles. When used to inoculated seedlings ofA llocasuarina lehmanniana, Frankia sp. HFPA11I1 induces root nodules which are coralloid and lacking nodule roots. The nodules are effective in acetylene reduction and the filamentous hyphae ofFrankia within the nodule lobes lack vesicles. Effective nodulation inA. Lehmanniana depends upon environmental conditions of the seedlings and proceeds much more slowly than in Casuariana.  相似文献

Four collections of three species ofTrimenia and one collection ofPiptocalyx were studied; early-formed and later-formed wood was analyzed for oneTrimenia. Liquid-preserved material permitted analysis of mucilage and starch storage in wood ofT. neocaledonica andP. moorei. BecausePiptocalyx is scandent whereasTrimenia is arborescent, wood differences relative to evolution of a climbing habit could be examined.Piptocalyx contrasts withTrimenia in having wider vessels, more numerous per mm2, resulting in a conductive area five times greater per unit area than that of theTrimenia woods averaged.Piptocalyx has appreciably fewer bars per perforation plate and thus much greater conductive area per perforation plate than have the species ofTrimenia. Rays inPiptocalyx are much taller and wider than those ofTrimenia. Wood ofTrimeniaceae is highly primitive in its scalariform perforation plates, scalariform lateral wall pitting on vessels, relatively long vessels elements, and heterocellular rays. Imperforate tracheary elements are septate nucleate fibertracheids (or even libriform fibers) rather than tracheids, but loss of borders on pits (and thus lowered conductive function of the imperforate tracheary elements) can be explained by the development of these elements into starchstoring cells. Some fiber-tracheids inT. neocaledonica are enlarged mucilagecontaining cells. Details of vessel structure inTrimeniaceae are similar to those ofMonimiaceae (s. s.), but similarity to some other lauralean (annonalean) families may be found: in mucilage presence,Trimeniaceae resembleLauraceae rather thanMonimiaceae. Wood ofTrimeniaceae may be regarded as highly mesomorphic, corresponding to the moist habitats in which all of the species occur.  相似文献

Two new species ofSisymbrium are described from the Department of Arequipa in south-western Peru. Both are annuals from the loma vegetation.Sisymbrium lactucoides has glabrous leaves with clasping bases and is very distinct.Sisymbrium ferreyrae is probably closest toS. llatasii, but it is a much smaller plant with petals and sepals of subequal length (vs. petals longer than sepals inS. llatasii).  相似文献
