The compiled data for this study represents the first Atlantic and Mediterranean-wide effort to pool all available biometric data for Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) with the collaboration of many countries and scientific groups. Biometric relationships were based on an extensive sampling (over 140,000 fish sampled), covering most of the fishing areas for this species in the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Sensitivity analyses were carried out to evaluate the representativeness of sampling and explore the most adequate procedure to fit the weight-length relationship (WLR). The selected model for the WLRs by stock included standardized data series (common measurement types) weighted by the inverse variability. There was little difference between annual stock-specific round weight-straight fork length relationships, with an overall difference of 6% in weight. The predicted weight by month was estimated as an additional component in the exponent of the weight-length function. The analyses of monthly variations of fish condition by stock, maturity state and geographic area reflect annual cycles of spawning and feeding behavior. We update and improve upon the biometric relationships for bluefin currently used by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, by incorporating substantially larger datasets than ever previously compiled, providing complete documentation of sources and employing robust statistical fitting. WLRs and other conversion factors estimated in this study differ from the ones used in previous bluefin stock assessments.  相似文献

Synopsis Reproductive parameters including body weight-length relationship, condition factor, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and fecundity of an endemic cyprinid,Zacco pachycephalus, were studied from October 1991 to January 1993. Although the condition factor was similar between both sexes, GSI values of female (3.72 to 14.24%) were significantly larger than that of males (0.21 to 2.23%) during the major breeding season. The number of yolky eggs per fish ranged from 459 to 2059. Ovum size distribution, annual GSI value, and recruitment of juvenile fish indicated thatZ. pachycephalus conducted two major spawning activities in spring (February to April) and summer (June to August). The larger GSI value and number of yolky eggs in spring compared to those in summer implies thatZ. pachycephalus has evolved a reproductive style by investing more energy in spring to avoid the damage of summer freshet on its recruitment success. The mating behavior ofZ. pachycephalus is similar to that of otherZacco fishes.  相似文献

Summary Catops nigricans reproduces in the autumn. Pre-imaginal development is temperature-dependent and takes place during the winter, followed by aestivation in the early adult stage. This summer diapause is obligatory and temperature independent. It synchronizes the monovoltine life cycle with the annual cycle. In three populations collected near Kiel (54°22′ N, 10°6′ E), K?ln (50°54′ N, 7°6′ E), and Paris (49°25′ N, 2°20′ E), pre-imaginal development slowed and the duration of summer diapause decreased with increasing latitude. Synchronization of the critical breeding interval with the appropriate environmental conditions was achieved through temperature- and photoperiod-dependent sensitivity of ovipositing adults, through different thermal thresholds in eggs, larvae, and pupae, and through sensitivity to photoperiod in third-instars larvae.C. nigricans copes with the unpredictability of climatic conditions in different ways. The local populations have evolved a mean diapause length which probably adjusts the life cycle in most years to the optimal date for reproduction. The mean diapause length was 77 days for Kiel, 98 days for K?ln and 138 days for Paris at 10°C, short-day (=SD).C. nigricans also spreads the risk by varying diapause length. Amongthe progeny of single females the range of diapause duration covered about 70% of the total range of the whole population. The oviposition rate of females confined to subterranean life was the same as females confined to subterranean life was the same as in those living under the influence of a varying photoperiod.C. nigricans should therefore be able to live both in the litter layer of forests and also in the nests and galleries of small mammals.  相似文献

Although muskellunge, Esox masquinongy, fisheries in northern US states and Canadian provinces are increasingly being managed by introduction of restrictive harvest regulations (e.g. 1370-mm (54′′) minimum length limits), many southern US muskellunge fisheries continue to be managed with comparatively liberal regulations (e.g. 762-mm (30′′) minimum length limits) that are implemented statewide. We studied the population dynamics of the New River, Virginia, muskellunge fishery and used predictive modeling to determine whether restrictive harvest regulations also might prove beneficial for this southern latitude fishery. A creel survey was also conducted to learn more about angler attitudes to the New River muskellunge fishery. Muskellunge grew quickly, with fish reaching harvestable lengths (762 mm, 30′′) in 2–3 years. Muskellunge fishing pressure, harvest rates, and voluntary release rates were low compared with reports for more northern areas. Most anglers, irrespective of how often they fished for muskellunge, defined “trophy” muskellunge to be approximately 1050–1100 mm (41–43′′) in length. Although angler support for restrictive harvest regulations was low, abundance of memorable-length (≥1070 mm, 42′′) muskellunge was predicted to increase under all evaluated length limits. Muskellunge yield would remain static at 914-mm (36′′) and 1016-mm (40′′) length limits, because of the rapid growth of fish, but yield would decline dramatically with a 1143-mm (45′′) length limit, because male muskellunge rarely exceeded 1100 mm (43′′). Because of rapid growth and low release rates, implementation of higher length limits (e.g. 965–1067 mm, 38–42′′) may indeed prove beneficial for augmenting “trophy” muskellunge production on the New River. Angler support for higher minimum length limits might be increased by educating anglers about the rapid growth rates of muskellunge and the expected size structure changes that will result from a length-limit increase. Size structure changes resulting from an increase in the minimum length limit may be difficult to detect because of potential increases in fishing pressure or reduced fish growth as a result of competition for food resources. Long-term monitoring of muskellunge growth and angling pressure may therefore be needed to ensure that new regulations are indeed benefitting the fishery.  相似文献

Seasonal and intersexual dynamics in parameters of the length-weight relationship of the mudskipperPeriophthalmus barbarus, from Imo River estuary, Nigeria, were studied. The proportionality constant or intercept (a) was aseasonal in males, but in females it was significantly higher in the dry season (November–April) than during the rains (May–October) due to heightened breeding activity. The length exponent (b) depicted seasonal isometry in males. In females, isometry was evident in the dry season while a positive allometry occurred during the wet season. The sizes of the smallest and largest specimens examined did not regulate variations in the magnitudes of (a) and (b) in both sexes. The insignificant intersexual variation in the length-weight parameters suggests the possibility of using a single predictive length-weight equation for the population. However, the sexes exhibited different monthly rank-orders of (a) and (b), thus making such composite estimates unreliable for a study spanning up to a year. Values of (a) and (b) were inversely correlated in both sexes. The population dynamics implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

Morphometric‐based condition indices are widely used to assess proximate body composition and, collaterally, feeding and living conditions of fish. However, the exact relationship between condition indices and proximate body composition of fish and its relatedness to life history traits and seasonality has yet to be fully explored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine how the Fulton's condition factor (K‐factor) is related to the chemical composition (i.e. lipid, protein, water and carbon content, and molar carbon : nitrogen ratio), length and gonadal development of fish, and how these relationships are influenced by gender and seasonality in three freshwater fish species: Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii), pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus). It was found that the strength and direction of association between the K‐factor and proximate body composition can vary markedly among fish species. The K‐factor correlated positively with gonadal development in pumpkinseed and Amur sleeper, while no such relationship existed in rudd. Condition factor can be a reliable measure of lipid content; however, the relationship was stronger in species with higher and more variable lipid contents. Moreover, a striking and consistently negative linkage was found between the K‐factor and water content of the fish body, which corresponds to the findings of several other studies. In turn, any relationship between the K‐factor and the protein content of fish was not detected. Gender seemed to exert a negligible effect on the relationship between the K‐factor and proximate body composition, while seasonal variance was obvious in most relationships.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the seasonal cycle of condition, nutrition and gonad development, as well as the magnitude of seasonal variations in energy content of somatic and gonad tissues in juveniles, males and females of Sclater's barbel, Barbus sclateri, from the upper Guadalete River (south Spain). The influence of reproductive cycle on somatic changes was also investigated and discussed. Measurements of condition factor (K), somatic index (SI), gonadosomatic index (GSI) and somatic and gonad energy content (J g-1 dw) were made in individual specimens taken from the Guadalete River monthly for 12 months. This freshwater ecosystem is characterised by strong seasonal fluctuations in water and flow level, temperature and food supply. It was found that in general juveniles, males and females of barbel exhibited a similar condition, nutrition and somatic energy cycle throughout the year, with the highest values in spring and the lowest in summer. Depletion of K, SI and somatic energy storage from spring until mid-summer seems to be associated with high metabolic demands during this period, and in adult fish also with spawning-related activity. The gonad index and energy content of the gonad were the highest in April and the lowest in summer for both sexes. Spawning took place during late spring – early summer, with fish quiescent by mid summer. The energy required for ovarian development (3970 J g-1 dw) was greater than the one for testes development (2763 J g-1 dw). Data on gonad energy content indicated a period (March to April) of intense energy accumulation (64% males and 37% females) which was related to the decline in the average somatic energy content in males and females. The somatic energy content was linearly related to K and SI. In the same way, GSI correlated positively with gonad energy. Linear trends were found between somatic parameters (K, SI and energy content) and gonad parameters (GSI and energy content). This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The present study investigated the length‐weight relationship (LWR) and allometric condition factor for 11 freshwater fish species of the Igarapé Fortaleza basin (00°02037.5″N; 51°06019.2″W), a tributary from the Amazon River system in the State of Amapá, northern Brazil. The fish were collected in the period from 2012 to 2014 using gillnets with different mesh sizes (10–40 mm between opposite knots). LWR parameters were estimated had angular coefficient (b) varying from 2.055 to 3.158. The allometric condition factor presented interspecific variation. These data complement the efforts to understand the biology of these Amazonian fish species.  相似文献

Here we present the within-site, seasonal, and interannual variations of the carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope ratios of leaves, wood, bark and litter from four sites in the Amazon region, Brazil. Samples were collected in Manaus (3° 06′07′′ S; 60°01′30′′ W), Ji-Paraná (10°53′07′′ S; 61°57′06′′ W), and Santarém (2°26′35′′ S; 54°42′30′′ W) with mean annual precipitation of 2207, 2040 and 1909 mm respectively. The overall average for all leaf samples was for δ13C and for δ15N (n=756). The leaf δ values at these sites were often but not always statistically distinct from each other. The δ13C values varied from to . Pronounced differences in δ13C values occurred with height associated with differences in forest structure. The δ13C of leaf dry matter showed seasonal variations associated with the length of the dry season, despite the fact that total annual precipitation was similar among the studied sites. Leaf δ15N values ranged from to a maximum value of , and the Santarém sites showed more enriched values than Manaus and Ji-Paraná sites. No seasonal variation was detected in the δ15N of leaves, but significant differences were observed among sites and with changes in canopy height. The isotope ratio data are consistent with our current understanding of the roles of light, water availability, and recycling of soil-respired CO2 influences on δ13C and consistent with our understanding that an open nitrogen cycle can lead to high δ15N values despite a significant number of legumes in the vegetation.  相似文献

Synopsis Sardinella aurita were sampled from catches of the lampara fishery at Tripoli, Libya during October 1979 through to September 1980. Landings consisted mainly of adult fish with large (mode 21–26 cm total length), relatively fast growing 3–5-group individuals in winter and spring and smaller (mode 14–20 cm total length), slow growing 2- and 3-group fish in summer. Gonad growth commenced in April, when the fish were feeding on zooplankton, and continued at the expense of mesenteric fat until July. It is suggested that the older and bigger fish spawn first, probably after having moved westwards, and that this results in spatial and temporal differences in length at age within the population. There was no consistent difference in growth rate between the sexes, but because first maturity in males tends to occur earlier than in females, there were length distribution differences between the sexes in the youngest (2+) age group as sampled.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of Coregonus lavaretus (L.) in Loch Lomond, Scotland, was investigated by monthly sampling. Spawing takes place during the first 3 weeks of January, on offshore gravel banks. Males congregate on the spawning-grounds throughout the spawning period, while ripe females cruise in unisexual shoals in deeper water. Individual females migrate to the spawning-grounds as ovulation takes place, spawn, and return to deep water. After spawning, the gonadosomatic ratio and somatic condition factor of both sexes decrease until June or July. Gonad recrudescence occurs in males between July and October, and in females between July and December. The somatic condition factor of both sexes rises from its minimum in June or July to its maximum in September. A competitive protein binding assay was used to determine cortisol levels in 0–1 ml plasma samples of individual fish. The lowest cortisol levels occurred in fish caught by seine-netting and killed immediately by anaesthesia in MS 222 (Sandoz). Seine-netting and killing by concussion induced higher cortisol levels, in the range of 3–5 ng/100 ml. Cortisol levels in fish caught by gill-netting for 18 h were 3–6 times higher than in seine-netted fish, and the method of killing was immaterial in this case. The length of time spent in the gill-net had no significant effect on cortisol level, but maintenance of the fish in aquaria for 24–80 h elicited high cortisol levels of over 50 μg/100 ml. Post-mortem delay before blood-sampling resulted in lowered cortisol levels. Seasonal variations in cortisol level were determined in gill-netted fish throughout the year, and in seine-netted fish when available. Cortisol levels were high in both sexes in September; and very high in ovulating females caught on the spawning-grounds, though not in ovulating females caught off the spawning-grounds.  相似文献

Two sediment cores sampled from a varzea (N 02°34′38′′, W 50°53′17′′) and mangrove area (N 02°35′59′′, W 50°52′08′′) in Amapá littoral, northern Brazil, were studied through pollen and spectrophotometric analysis in order to compare biological and chemical signals of mangrove vegetation recorded by sediments during the late Holocene. According to the pollen study, probably the core base (145–65 cm) of varzea vegetation accumulated sediments devoid of vegetation. Later, this site was dominated by herbaceous vegetation and it concluded with a varzea forest. Based on spectrophotometric analysis, this core did not present significant tannin concentrations. This is likely due to the mangrove absence during the vegetation development at this site. The core sampled from a mangrove area also presented a relationship between palaeovegetation and the sediment biogeochemistry. However, the mangrove core presented significant tannin content along the mangrove phases. Thus, this spectrophotometric method supported by the pollen data may be considered as a complementary tool to identify palaeomangrove deposits.  相似文献

The 9 km2 uplifted lagoon of Taiaro Atoll (15°45′S, 144°38′W) is hypersaline due to its isolation from the ocean, yet it contains a high diversity of fish. The question unifying our expedition was to discover whether these assemblages could be self-sustaining despite very limited contact with the ocean. Although we were constrained by time, collections of fish larvae showed that some species can complete their life-cycle within the lagoon, while others differed genetically between the lagoon and the ocean, consistent with restricted gene flow. The lagoon contained few oceanic species of zooplankton, confirming its general isolation, but nevertheless some fish species may depend upon infrequent colonisation from the ocean (when large waves drive water over the normally dry reef crest). Isotopic signatures in fish otoliths suggest the basis for a more definitive and inclusive test of the sources of the lagoonal assemblage. Accepted: 28 August 1997  相似文献

Synopsis Reproduction in female Serrasalmus spilopleura (Characiformes, Characidae) from the Itumbiara reservoir (18°28 S, 48°36 W), Paranaíba River, Brazil, was examined with emphasis on the relationship between condition factors and coelomic fat, the annual reproductive cycle and the unusual dynamics of its sexual maturity. The condition factor and coelomic fat index follow a similar pattern along the stages of reproductive cycle. Variations in the condition factor along the reproductive cycle were assigned to variations in the fat contents of the carcass. Serrasalmus spilopleura exhibits characteristics of partial spawning fish and reproduces throughout the year. Sexual maturity occurs at 17.8 cm standard length. Resting and totally spent females were not captured. Females cycle from partially spent to intermediate/advanced maturation without going into the totally spent or resting stages. The initial maturation stage is restricted to fish of intermediate size. Once the initial maturation stage has started the fish remains there for a considerable period of its lifetime before entering in the intermediate maturation stage, an uncommon sexual maturity pattern. The long duration of the initial maturation stage was responsible for the females not returning to the resting stage after spawning.  相似文献

The growth and condition of rock bass,Ambloplites rupestris (Rafinesque), inhabiting the Middle Thames River near London, Ontario, Canada, are compared with growth in other northern streams and lakes, across the species' range in latitude, and between the sexes. Growth in streams was not less than in lakes, contrary to expectation. The condition and maximum size and age attained by stream inhabitants reflected the rigours of their environment. Growth in northern streams was less than in southern streams, due likely to the decreased ‘growing season’ length. Northern fish were typically in better condition, however. Sexual dimorphism in size was demonstrated, males being heavier and longer at age than females, although the sexes did not differ in condition.  相似文献

The density, distribution and population structure of Opusia indica were studied through transects method. Two transects were delimited in a mangrove area of Korangi creek (24°79′ N/67°20′ E). On each transect, three 0.25 m2 quadrats were sampled at three tidal levels on a monthly basis during low tide. A total of 1919 crabs were obtained, of which 775 were males, 945 were non-ovigerous females and 199 were ovigerous females. Density of crabs varied between 198 m−2 to 798 m−2. The density and size distribution showed significant difference from low tide level to high tide level and were positively correlated with the percent moisture, percent organic matter and sediment structure. Based on carapace width (CW) males were significantly larger than the females indicating sexual dimorphism. The monthly size frequency distribution of crabs showed recruitment of juvenile crabs (< than 4 mm) nearly throughout the year except in few months. The monthly sex ratio deviated from 1:1 throughout the year, with female bias (χ 2 = 31.633, P = 0.001 and df =11). Breeding was seasonal with peaks in SW monsoon. Size at sexual maturity based on smallest ovigerous female was CW = 4.0 mm. The average number of eggs per female were 2066 ± 479 (n = 25). Positive linear relationship was observed between the size of the female crabs and the egg numbers (r 2 = 0.554).  相似文献

The salt dependence of the binding constant (K) and enthalpic (ΔH) and entropic (ΔS) components for magnesium binding to poly-RNA was determined as a function of the concentration and identity of monovalent counter ions (M+). Both ΔH and ΔS were found to vary linearly with ln [M+]. A theoretical analysis of the experimental data revealed that the temperature dependence of the product of the density of bound counter ions and the electrostatic interaction parameter, δ(m′ψ)/δT, is non-negligible, although it has previously been ignored. The sign of δ(m′ψ)/δT was negative for poly(A) and positive for poly(U), indicating that the charge density of poly(A) decreased with temperature, while that of poly(U) increased. These results are related to the distinct solution structures of the RNA homopolymers. Considerable support was lent to this calorimetric approach by the excellent agreement obtained in a test comparison between experimental and calculated parameters. From the intercept of energy term versus ln [M+] plots, the non-electrostatic contributions, ΔH° and ΔS°, were determined. For each polynucleotide, the similarity in ΔG° over the series of monovalent ions used in each study suggests a compensatory relationship between ΔH° and ΔS°, each of which shows significant variation. The non-electrostatic contribution to binding of divalent magnesium is generally entropically favorable and enthalpically unfavorable for both poly(A) and poly(U). Summary The growth of O. punctatus has been studied from the zones on the opercular bones and scales. Size estimates obtained from the opercular bones and scales were further substantiated by length frequency distribution and back-calculations. A close agreement in length-age relationship was obtained by various methods. These observations provide adequate evidence towards the validity of age determination in O. punctatus.Growth rate differs markedly in the two sexes. Males grow faster than the females. To study the changes in length with age, von Bertalanffy growth equation and Gompertz curve were used. The theoretical lengths obtained from the von Bertalanffy equation agreed very closely with the observed lengths. There is sexual difference in the weight-length relationship of O. punctatus. Modal weight of each year class obtained according to age reading showed that growth in weight is faster in males. The theoretical growth equation gives a good fit for weight-age data. O. punctatus is generally a fish of the impounded waters. The interrelationship between pond environment and growth characteristics has been discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess juvenile fish communities in terms of species composition, fish diversity and density in the littoral zone of the Kaunas reservoir before (in 1989–1990, period I) and after (in 1999–2000, period II, and in 2006–2007, period III) launching the Kruonis hydroelectric pumped plant (Kruonis HPP). During the whole research period, 20 fish species were caught. According to the frequency of occurrence, the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, European perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus were regarded as constant species in all investigated periods. Significant differences were established in juvenile fish community density between period I and periods II and III, whereas species richness (S) and species diversity indices (H′, J′) did not change significantly. The density of the shoreline community in period III was more than two times lower than in period I, probably due to higher fluctuations in water level of the reservoir, resulting from the Kruonis HPP operation.  相似文献
