Fish farming impact on decomposition and loss of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus fixed in seagrass litter were studied in a Posidonia oceanica meadow (Aegean Sea, Greece) using in situ incubation of senescent seagrass leaves collected under (station: cages) and away (station: control) from fish cages and deployed in a cross design of origin/station. Decomposition rate and loss of carbon and nitrogen fixed in seagrass litter were pronounced under the cages while loss of phosphorus was less evident. Decomposition was related to nutrient availability in seagrass tissue and pore water, sediment organic matter and origin of seagrass litter. When incubated under the cages, litter originated from the control decomposed faster than litter originated from the cages since the former was qualitatively better substrate for decomposers and the nutrient conditions in that station were enriched in the pore water and sediment. The lower decomposition of litter originated from cages suggests that seagrass tissues under the cages accumulate chemical deterrents, possibly in order to confront high grazing pressure, which on the other hand reduces the rate of decomposition.  相似文献

Two sediment sampling campaigns were conducted in 1978 and 1988 in Lake Geneva (Switzerland). Organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and its various forms were analyzed. Results indicate a stability of organic carbon and nitrogen mass, and a significant increase of phosphorus. The variation of phosphorus mass is related to the increase of nonapatite inorganic phosphorus. This study attempts to quantify the phosphorus exchanges at the water sediment interface. The dissolved oxygen level in the bottom water determines the exchange direction. In aerobic conditions, sediments accumulate the excess of phosphorus, while in anaerobic conditions, they constitute an internal source.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate the role of different environmental conditions (oxic and anoxic), and the presence of macrofauna and/or meiofauna during the different steps of Scirpus maritimus L. decomposition/mineralization under controlled laboratory conditions. The results showed no significant differences between the anaerobic and the aerobic degradation of plant material, under the presence of bacteria or meiofauna. Nevertheless, under anoxic conditions sediment mineralization was enhanced, with an increase concentration of phosphorus and ammonium in the water phase. Concerning the presence of fauna, results show that, although bacterial activity was responsible for 70% of the S. maritimus leaves degradation, the presence of macrofauna together with meiofauna enhanced the leaves mineralization up to 90%. Moreover, the presence of macrofauna together with meiofauna significantly affected the decomposition of phosphorus and of nitrogen, as well as the leaves lesser labile structural parts, by increasing the mineralization of plant carbon, and raised the nutrient turnover within the system.The present study reinforces the functional link between fauna levels on the nutrient dynamics in salt marshes ecosystems, namely at the vegetation detritus/water column interface. SUMMARY. 1. The exchange of phosphorus between the epilimnetic (shallow zone) sediment and water column in Lough Ennell was investigated in laboratory experiments using five intact cores.
2. Variations in water mixing, sediment suspension and aerobic–anaerobic oxygen status in the water column and its effects on sediment phosphorus release rates were determined.
3. Experimental results indicated that phosphorus release is possible under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Aerobic release (0.025 mg P l−1 over 5 days) was possible up to the point when mass resuspension of sediment occurred. Anaerobic release for the same period and mixing conditions was 0.183 mg Pl−1.
4. The release rate under aerobic conditions at 10°C equates to an internal areal loading of 0.134 g P m−2 yr−1, which is approximately 17% and 30% of the average total phosphorus and orthophosphate loadings respectively for the period 1974–79.
5. The results clearly implicate aerobic inorganic phosphorus release from the epilimnetic sediments as a significant source of this nutrient to the overlying water column and is likely a major factor in the continuing eutrophic status in the lake.  相似文献

为探究三峡消落带泥沙淤积条件下一年生草本枯落物的分解及养分变化特征,通过模拟实验,采用分解袋法,研究不同泥沙埋深对4种一年生草本分解及养分动态的影响。所选择的三峡消落带4种一年生优势草本植物包括马唐(Digitaria sanguinalis)、稗(Echinochloa crusgali)、狼杷草(Bidens tripartita)、苍耳(Xanthium sibiricum),设置了无掩埋(0 cm)、中度掩埋(5 cm)和深度掩埋(10 cm)3个泥沙掩埋深度,试验周期为180 d。结果表明:(1)在整个实验期间,4种一年生草本枯落物的分解速率均呈现先快后慢的特点,与0 cm泥沙埋深处理相比,5、10 cm埋深下4种一年生草本枯落物的分解速率均显著降低;(2)在分解结束时,4种一年生草本枯落物C含量变化不大,P元素处于释放状态,而在泥沙掩埋下N元素处于富集状态;(3)除马唐和稗枯落物的P含量变化外,4种一年生草本枯落物C、N、P含量均表现为0 cm掩埋处理显著低于5、10 cm处理组;相反,4种一年生草本枯落物K含量则表现为0 cm掩埋处理显著高于5、10 cm处理组。研究表明消落带大量泥沙淤积抑制枯落物的分解和C、N、P元素释放,有利于降低对三峡库区水体富营养化及营养物质悬浮的贡献率,一定程度上,对库区水质保护有正面效应。  相似文献

4th instar Chironomus plumosus larvae (about 1000·m–2) were added to tubes containing sediment and overlying water. At a temperature of 20°C the larvae greatly increased the trasnport of silica, phosphorus and iron from the sediment to the water. Oxygen concentrations did not influence the exchange of silica. For two non-calcareous sediments the exchange of phosphorus and iron was much higher under anaerobic than under aerobic conditions while the difference was small for sediment from a hardwater lake. Exchange of inorganic nitrogen was little influenced by added chironomid larvae.  相似文献

Wetland plants are important components that influence the biogeochemistry of wetland ecosystems. Therefore, remediation performance in wetlands can differ depending on the growth forms of plants. In this study, the effects of Eichhornia crassipes (floating plant) and Ceratophyllum demersum (submerged plant) on the wetland soil and water environments were investigated using a microcosm study with simulated hydrology of retention-type wetlands between rainfall events. The C. demersum microcosm (SP) showed the fastest recovery with a diel fluctuation pattern of dissolved oxygen, pH, and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) from the impacts of nutrient inflow. Moreover, SP exhibited the lowest decrease in sediment ORP, the highest dehydrogenase activity, and more organic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus. E. crassipes microcosms exhibited the lowest water temperature, and efficiently controlled algae. In the presence of plants, the total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in water rapidly decreased, and the composition of organic and inorganic nutrient forms was altered along with a decrease in concentration. The results indicate that wetland plants help retain nutrients in the system, but the effects varied based on the wetland plant growth forms.  相似文献

Nitrogen and phosphorus releases from swamp water,Cyperus papyrus plant organs and papyrus swamp sediments were investigated over five weeks. The release of nutrients by dissolution of decomposing organic matter was very important for the swamp water under the prevailing anaerobic conditions. Large amounts of nutrients were found in the incubation water with plant organs and sediments within the first 48 hours. Leaching of the nutrients from the plant organs and sediment caused high initial values. Subsequently decomposition of the organic material caused slight changes in the nutrient levels in the water. Probably denitrification played a role in the nitrogen dynamics, while phosphorus was mineralized.  相似文献

Sediments of the river Elbe estuary have been studied to assess their impact on the total nitrogen budget of the estuary. A new laboratory incubation apparatus was used to provide a means of regulating important parameters such as temperature and oxygen concentrations. With this apparatus sediment cores from a typical shallow water area with high organic carbon content were incubated under varying oxygen concentrations in the overlying water. Measurements of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and nitrous oxide in the water phase were carried out and the fluxes between sediment and water phase calculated. During aerobic conditions in the water phase overall nitrate fluxes between + 4 and –3.5 mmol Nm–2d–1 across the sediment/water interface were observed. Under anaerobic conditions the fluxes increased up to –10 mmol Nm–2 d–1. Nitrous oxide was formed within the sediment under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Fluxes into the water phase were highest when the oxygen concentrations in the water phase were low (between 0.1 and 0.6 mg l–1).  相似文献

Coastal waters worldwide have experienced an increase in the occurrence of harmful algal blooms. Over the past decade, nuisance blooms of the toxic cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula have increased in frequency and severity in south-east Queensland, Australia, with blooms in Moreton Bay hypothesised to be linked to increased inputs of dissolved nutrients and organic carbon from land-based sources. An in situ field experiment was conducted in northern Moreton Bay (Deception Bay), Australia, to determine the growth response of L. majuscula to phosphorus, nitrogen and organically chelated iron additions to the water column. A three-way analysis of variance showed each of these nutrients stimulated L. majuscula biomass under field conditions, with organically chelated iron (FeEDTA) > phosphorus > nitrogen. Concurrent addition of all three nutrients [FeEDTA + P + N] caused the greatest response being 18 times the control after 49 days; this resulted in an additional 928 gdw m−2 of L. majuscula biomass over the control (54 gdw m−2). These results show that water borne nutrients, particularly organically chelated iron, phosphorus and nitrogen can promote prolific growth of the bloom-forming cyanobacterium L. majuscula. It is also likely that the addition of iron and/or phosphorus stimulated nitrogen fixation in L. majuscula, based on the large L. majuscula biomass and higher tissue nitrogen content in the iron and phosphorus treatments. Enrichment with poultry litter (sourced from the adjacent catchment) also substantially enhanced L. majuscula biomass. The experiment shows that a precautionary approach to limit or reduce nutrient additions to streams, estuaries and coastal waters is justified; otherwise the magnitude of L. majuscula blooms is likely to increase in Moreton Bay in the future.  相似文献

Summary The effects of hydroperiod on decomposition rates of senescent Acer rubrum leaves were tested in microcosms in a controlled laboratory environment. Microcosm treatments included continuously flooded, continuously unflooded, and fluctuating hydroperiods. All flooding treatments promoted decomposition but variations in hydroperiod had no significant effects. A leaching experiment indicated the higher decay rates under flooded conditions were primarily due to high leaching losses from soaking. Unlike nutrient dynamics in the field, where net accumulation occurs, nitrogen and phosphorus in the litter in the microcosms exhibited net losses. The major external inputs which provide a source of nitrogen and phosphorus for immobilization in the field were lacking in the microcosms. Calcium, magnesium, and potassium exhibited net losses except for calcium in the unflooded microcosms. The microcosm results demonstrated the importance of external inputs to litter nutrient relations.  相似文献

We are studying present conditions and consequences of material movement from land to water in the Lake Titicaca basin, and how fluxes are affected by human activities. The principal objective of this research is to describe and explain the variability in the Andean Altiplano of (a) water, nutrient and sediment fluxes from land and (b) composition, nutrient limitation and other important features of nearshore lake communities, and compare the effects of different agricultural practices (especially traditional and modern) on these factors. We are focusing on a comparison of the impacts of two forms of agriculture in this region: ancient raised fields currently under rehabilitation, and flat pastures and fields, which are more common. Results of the first year of study indicate there is substantial variability in nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in relation to ecotone complexity (simple vs. intermediate vs. complex). Raised field sites have the beneficial effect of reducing high available nutrient concentrations (nitrate and soluble reactive phosphorus) and sediment load (measured as turbidity) as the water passes through them enroute to the lake. Aquatic vegetation (algae and macrophytes) reflect well ambient total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Experimental nutrient limitation bioassays indicate that nitrogen is the most important limiting nutrient, though there is important spatial variability within the landscape, and phosphorus as well as nitrogen can be limiting.  相似文献

为探讨沙漠公路防护林地表凋落物的分解速率和养分释放动态对施肥的响应,采用凋落物分解袋法,对塔里木沙漠公路防护林地乔木状沙拐枣(Calligonum arborescens)同化枝、梭梭(Haloxylon ammodendron)同化枝和多枝柽柳(Tamarix ramosissima)枝凋落物在施肥处理下的分解及养分释放特征进行研究。结果表明:经过420d的分解,3种凋落物质量残留率在对照(不施肥)、施用氮肥、施用磷钾复合肥处理间存在显著性差异(P0.05)。乔木状沙拐枣同化枝、梭梭同化枝和多枝柽柳枝在对照处理下的质量残留率分别为56.95%、31.32%和50.24%。施肥处理下3种凋落物均呈现出梭梭同化枝分解速率最快,多枝柽柳枝次之,乔木状沙拐枣同化枝分解最慢。施用磷钾复合肥极显著提高了3种凋落物的分解速率(P0.01);施用氮肥则促进多枝柽柳枝的分解,抑制乔木状沙拐枣和梭梭同化枝的分解。凋落物分解过程中,对照组3种植物凋落物的C、N、P和K元素均呈现净释放状态;施肥后凋落物的N、P和K元素呈现出富集-释放的模式。凋落物初始P含量和C/N、C/P比值是分解初期的主导因素,初始K、木质素、纤维素含量和C/N、木质素/N比值是分解后期的主要控制因素。研究表明,施肥显著影响沙漠公路防护林地表凋落物的分解,增加防护林地表凋落物的养分归还量,延后养分释放的时间,改善塔里木沙漠公路防护林地的土壤肥力。凋落物初始C/N比值是预测塔里木沙漠凋落物分解的重要因素,且不同分解时期影响凋落物分解的初始化学组成有所差异。  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) performance under continuous aerobic conditions always eventually deteriorates; however, the speed at which this happens depends on the carbon source supplied. The published data suggest that propionate is a better carbon source than acetate is for maintaining operational stability, although it is not clear why. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor was run initially under conventional anaerobic/aerobic conditions with either acetate or propionate as the carbon source. Chemical and microbiological analyses revealed that both sources performed as expected for such systems. When continuous aerobic conditions were imposed on both these established communities, marked shifts of the “Candidatus Accumulibacter” clades were recorded for both carbon sources. Here, we discuss whether this shift could explain the prolonged EBPR stability observed with propionate.

The loss of dry mass, nitrogen and phosphorus from shoot and root litter of mudflat annuals was examined in a series of experimental marshes in the Delta Marsh, Manitoba, Canada. Litter bags containing shoot material of three mudflat annuals (Aster laurentianus Fern., Atriplex patula L., and Chenopodium rubrum L.) were placed on the sediment surface of the marshes under drawdown conditions. In addition, litter bags containing root material of these three species were shallowly buried. Approximately 70% and 50% of both shoot and root litter, respectively, was still present after one year in the field. During the second year when the marshes were flooded, shoot and root litter lost an additional 20% and 0% of their mass, respectively. Except for Chenopodium roots, which accumulated nitrogen and phosphorus during both years, shoot and root litter lost from 0 to 50% of their nitrogen and phosphorus early in the first year, with levels generally remaining constant through the remainder of the study period. Our results indicate that mudflat annual litter decomposed slowly and would provide abundant habitat for aquatic invertebrates when these marshes were reflooded. However, most nutrient loss took place in the first year when the litter was unflooded, with little loss occurring in the second year when flooded.  相似文献

凋落枝是森林地上部分凋落物的重要组分,揭示其水溶性碳氮磷的动态规律对于认识森林物质循环过程具有重要意义,但目前研究集中于凋落叶,而对凋落枝缺乏必要关注。因此,以中亚热带典型马尾松(Pinus massoniana)人工林、杉木(Cunninghamia lanceolata)人工林和米槠(Castanopsis carlesii)次生林为研究对象,在一个自然年内调查了凋落枝水溶性碳、氮、磷含量及其芳香化指数以及化学计量比的动态变化过程。结果显示:(1)米槠次生林凋落枝水溶性碳、氮、磷含量及芳香化指数明显大于马尾松和杉木人工林;(2)水溶性碳和磷、水溶性碳比磷、水溶性氮比磷和芳香化指数有明显的季节变化;(3)水溶性碳、水溶性磷、水溶性氮比磷和芳香化指数在不同林分和季节间有交互作用。(4)马尾松和杉木人工林、米槠次生林凋落枝水溶性物质含量的季节变化多数与气温和降水呈显著负相关。这些结果表明亚热带次生林可能相对于人工林具有更为高效的以凋落枝为载体的物质循环过程,在未来气候变暖背景下亚热带森林由凋落枝归还给土壤的养分浓度可能降低。  相似文献

High macrophyte density in shallow lakes is often associated with clear water, especially when the non-rooted, submerged angiosperm Ceratophyllum demersum is dominant. Lack of true roots and high surface area:volume ratio suggest that nutrient uptake from the water column by C. demersum may be high. Therefore, possible competition for nutrients, including phosphorus (P), could contribute to phytoplankton inhibition. C. demersum ability to absorb and store P at four nutrient levels (unenriched + three enrichment treatments) was investigated in a 34-day laboratory experiment using agar-based nutrient diffusing substrates (NDSs). P uptake rates and abatement potential by C. demersum were assessed from total phosphorus concentration (TP) patterns in the water column. Changes in C. demersum biomass (wet weight) also were determined. C. demersum took up P quickly. Some P release occurred during the experiment, especially under high nutrient conditions. Initial net P uptake by C. demersum was high, but medium-term (five weeks) average uptake was relatively low. Projected long-term net P uptake approached zero. Plant biomass loss and production of macrodetritus (plant fragments >1 mm) were highest in unenriched aquaria. Biomass loss in the lower enriched treatments was equally divided between loss as macrodetritus and as dissolved organic matter (DOM), but loss as DOM was four times higher than loss as macrodetritus in the highest nutrient treatment. The results suggest that medium- and long-term low phytoplankton biomass in C. demersum-rich lakes is achieved via mechanisms other than direct competition for nutrients from the water column.  相似文献

Summary Bags containing Sitka spruce litter (0, 15, 50 g) were placed in flower pots and covered with sand. Pots were watered at weekly intervals with nutrient solutions with and without nitrogen and with and without phosphorus. Decomposition was measured by carbon dioxide evolution from pots without plants. Neither added nitrogen nor added phosphorus had any marked effect on the rate of decomposition, which amounted to 14% loss of carbon in a year. The two grass species responded similarly to fertilizer; 72% of added nitrogen and 90% of added phosphorus were recovered in plant parts.A. capillaris captured nutrients more effectively from spruce litter than didD. flexuosa, recovering 13% of the phosphorus in the litter but only 5% of the nitrogen. Neither uptake of nitrogen nor uptake of phosphorus was enhanced in plants receiving fertilizer additions of the other nutrient.  相似文献

Macrophyte decomposition is a critical process that affects carbon and nutrient cycling, and energy flow, although the majority of the details involved in the process remain unclear. For the present study, a litter bag experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of sediment-borne nutrient and litter quality on the decomposition rates and nutrient release of four macrophyte life forms (emergent macrophyte: Phragmites australis, free-floating macrophyte: Hydrocharis dubia, floating-leaved macrophyte: Nymphoides peltata, submerged macrophyte: Ceratophyllum demersum), and a species mixture. Our results indicated that litter quality significantly influenced macrophyte decomposition and nutrient release. High-quality litter species (high initial nitrogen and phosphorus contents, as well as low C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios) decomposed more rapidly than low-quality litter species, and the initial C:N and C:P ratios, rather than the initial N and P contents, were effective indicators of the decomposition rate of macrophytes. Sediment-borne nutrients had little effect on the decomposition rate, yet a strong effect on the release of N and P, although the interactions between litter quality and sediment-borne nutrients significantly affected the decomposition rate. Three-way ANOVA analysis revealed that the litter quality imparted a more potent effect on the macrophyte decomposition rate and release of N and P than sediment-borne nutrients. These results implied that litter quality interacts with sediment-borne nutrients and may control macrophyte decomposition in shallow lakes.  相似文献

Microbial hydrocarbon degradation in soil was studied during periodical aerobic/anaerobic switching and under purely aerobic conditions by using a pilot-scale plant with diesel-fuel-contaminated sand. The system worked according to the percolation principle with controlled circulation of process water and aeration. Periodical switching between 4 h of aerobic and 2 h of anaerobic conditions was achieved by repeated saturation of the soil with water. Whatever the cultivation mode, less than 50% of the diesel was degraded after 650 h because the hydrocarbons were adsorbed. Contrary to expectations, aerobic/anaerobic changes neither accelerated the rate of degradation nor reduced the residual hydrocarbon content of the soil. Obviously the pollutant degradation rate was determined mainly by transport phenomena and less by the efficiency of microbial metabolism. The total mass of oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced was greater under aerobic/anaerobic changing than under aerobic conditions, although the mass of hydrocarbons degraded was nearly the same. As shown by an overall balance of microbial growth and by a carbon balance, the growth yield coefficient was smaller during aerobic/anaerobic changes than under aerobic conditions.
