Marine hoplonemerteans were collected intertidally inAlgoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1983.Algoa Living worms appear to belong to the genus Nipponnemertes, perhaps N. africanus (Wheeler, 1940). The external morphology and thestylet apparatus are described and illustrated. Laboratory observations showed that this speciesattacked and consumed two species of sympatricamphipods, Elasmopus pectenicrus and Hyalegrandicornis (the only two species tested). Thefeeding behavior was similar to that documented forother suctorial nemerteans that feed on amphipods. Onecomplete feeding sequence, from the initial strike tocompletion of feeding on H. grandicornis,took approximately 12 min: the proboscis struck theventral side of the amphipod, which was immobilized in<1 min; the head eventually wedged between thesternal plates, and the internal organs were evacuatedby suctorial action. The addition of E. pectenicrus andH. grandicornis as potentialprey for suctorial hoplonemerteans brings the totalknown number of amphipod species to 25, involving atleast ten families. A summary of all species ofAmphipoda known to be potential prey for suctorialhoplonemerteans is presented.  相似文献

Summary The mouthparts of Lepidoptera were investigated in a number of species by morphological and cinematographical methods. Both the galeae (which compose the proboscis) and the basal maxillary components (stipites) were studied in the resting position, in motion, and during feeding. In the resting position the proboscis is coiled so tightly that the surfaces of the consecutive coils are in close contact and the outermost coil touches the ventral side of the head. Cuticular processes of the galeal wall interlock between the coils in this position. In the investigated species they occur on the galeal wall and on the ventral side of the head in varying number and distribution. By the extension of the basal galeal joint, the coiled proboscis is released from its resting position and is elevated continuously. It uncoils in 3–5 steps which effect the entire length simultaneously. Each uncoiling step occurs synchronously with a compression of the stipital tubes on either side of the body. These compression movements pump hemolymph into the galeae. In all investigated Lepidoptera the uncoiled proboscis shows a distinct downward bend at a certain point which is also detectable in anaesthetized or freshly killed animals in some species. This feeding position and the movements of the uncoiled proboscis are similar in all species despite the intrinsic galeal muscles being variously arranged in the galeal lumen in different Lepidoptera. When comparing cross-sections through corresponding regions of coiled and uncoiled proboscises, the curvatures of the dorsal galeal walls remain unchanged. Coiling of the proboscis starts at the tip and progresses to the base. After coiling the proboscis tightly beneath the head, the diameter of the spiral widens due to its elastic properties until the proboscis props itself against the ventral side of the head. Neotropical orchid bees (Euglossini) possess the longest proboscides among bees. In this study, we compared the feeding behavior and functional morphology of mouthparts in two similarly large-sized species of Euglossa that differ greatly in proboscis length. Feeding observations and experiments conducted under semi-natural conditions were combined with micro-morphological examination using LM, SEM and micro CT techniques. The morphometric comparison showed that only the components of the mouthparts that form the food tube differ in length, while the proximal components, which are responsible for proboscis movements, are similar in size. This study represents the first documentation of lapping behaviour in Euglossini. We demonstrate that Euglossa bees use a lapping-sucking mode of feeding to take up small amounts of fluid, and a purely suctorial technique for larger fluid quantities. The mouthpart movements are largely similar to that in other long-tongued bees, except that the postmentum in Euglossa can be extended, greatly enhancing the protraction of the glossa. This results in a maximal functional length that is about 50% longer than the length of the food canal composing parts of the proboscis. The nectar uptake and the sensory equipment of the proboscis are discussed in context to flower probing.  相似文献

An assessment of the anatomical costs of extremely long proboscid mouthparts can contribute to the understanding of the evolution of form and function in the context of insect feeding behaviour. An integrative analysis of expenses relating to an exceptionally long proboscis in butterflies includes all organs involved in fluid feeding, such as the proboscis plus its musculature, sensilla, and food canal, as well as organs for proboscis movements and the suction pump for fluid uptake. In the present study, we report a morphometric comparison of derived long‐tongued (proboscis approximately twice as long as the body) and short‐tongued Riodinidae (proboscis half as long as the body), which reveals the non‐linear scaling relationships of an extremely long proboscis. We found no elongation of the tip region, low numbers of proboscis sensilla, short sensilla styloconica, and no increase of galeal musculature in relation to galeal volume, but a larger food canal, as well as larger head musculature in relation to the head capsule. The results indicate the relatively low extra expense on the proboscis musculature and sensilla equipment but significant anatomical costs, such as reinforced haemolymph and suction pump musculature, as well as thick cuticular proboscis walls, which are functionally related to feeding performance in species possessing an extremely long proboscis. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 291–304.  相似文献

Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) feeding behavior and ecology were studied at the Natai Lengkuas Station, Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. Data on feeding behavior were collected using scan sampling during group follows. Three vegetational plots containing 1,732 trees were established and monitored monthly for changes in fruit, flower, and young leaf production. Basal area and canopy cover were calculated and used in estimating food abundance. Proboscis monkeys were found to be folivore/frugivores, specializing in seed consumption. At least 55 different plant species were used as food sources, with a marked preference for Eugenia sp. 3/4,Ganua motleyana and Lophopetalum javanicum. These tree species were among the most frequent and most dominant. However, proboscis monkeys were selective feeders; use of tree species as food sources was not based simply on relative density. During times of low food abundance and/or availability proboscis monkeys switched dietary strategies and increased dietary diversity. The average total home range was estimated to be 130.3 ha, with an average group density of 5.2 groups per km2. The average biomass per km2 was estimated to be 499.5 kg. Given their high biomass and predilection for consuming seeds of dominant species, proboscis monkeys may help to maintain and increase vegetational diversity.  相似文献

We have described the feeding behavior of the frugivorous butterfly Morpho peleides (Butler 1872) under various conditions and tested its ability to take up fluid from selected natural and artificial food sources in comparison with the nectarvorous Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus 1758). Both nymphalids showed similar probing behavior except for one particular proboscis movement and the fact that M. peleides was unable to feed from Lantana flowers. In 2-min feeding trials, M. peleides imbibed a greater amount of fluid from the food sources, with the most conspicuous difference on rotting banana. Without time restriction, M. peleides gained a significantly greater percentage of body weight from soaked plotting paper, whereas nosignificant difference occurred from tubular artificial flowers. The ability of M. peleides to feed more efficiently from wet surfaces than V. cardui is discussed in context with proboscis morphology.  相似文献

Eichhornia azurea is a tristylous species of Pontederiaceae. Moderate self-incompatibility accompanies the floral heteromorphism of this species.Eichhornia azurea is almost exclusively visited by one bee species,Ancyloscelis gigas (Anthophoridae), in South Brazil. This species has an extremely long proboscis covered with recurved hairs. Bees use these hairs to collect pollen from the anthers placed inside the narrow perianth tube ofE. azurea. Analyses of the pollen load ofA. gigas females show that they are flower constant and carry pollen from all three anther levels. The behavior ofA. gigas and its proboscis morphology make this bee species narrowly adapted and an effective pollinator for facilitating legitimate pollination ofE. azurea flowers in southern Brazil.  相似文献

Female Pangoniinae in the tabanid fly genus Philoliche can display remarkably elongated proboscis lengths, which are adapted for both blood- and nectar-feeding. Apart from their role as blood-sucking pests, they represent important pollinators of the South African flora. This study examines the morphology of the feeding apparatus of two species of long-proboscid Tabanidae: Philoliche rostrata and Philoliche gulosa – both species display adaptations for feeding from a diverse guild of long-tubed flowers, and on vertebrate blood. The heavily sclerotised proboscis can be divided into two functional units. The short, proximal piercing part is composed of the labrum-epipharynx unit, the hypopharynx and paired mandible and maxilla. The foldable distal part is composed of the prementum of the labium which solely forms the food canal and is responsible for nectar uptake via the apical labella. The proboscis works as a drinking straw, relying on a pressure gradient provided by a two-part suction pump in the head. Both proboscis and body lengths and suction pump dimensions show a significantly correlated allometric relationship with each other. This study provides detailed insights into the adaptations for a dual diet using an elongated sucking proboscis, and considers these adaptations in the context of the evolution of nectar feeding in Brachycera.  相似文献

【背景】实蝇的竞争可能发生在生活史的各个阶段,但未见卵和蛹的种间竞争的相关报道。【方法】将橘小实蝇与番石榴实蝇的卵及蛹按照相应的比例或龄期分别进行混合培养,分析2种实蝇的卵或蛹混合后的发育历期和存活率是否受到彼此影响。【结果】橘小实蝇与番石榴实蝇的卵同龄等量混合,对彼此卵的历期和孵化率无影响。当橘小实蝇和番石榴实蝇的蛹为新鲜蛹时,分别与比它们蛹龄大1 d的对方蛹混合,蛹的羽化率分别为(87.67±3.61)%和(84.33±2.56)%,显著小于对照,说明在此混合蛹处理中,后化蛹者的发育可能受到先化蛹者的抑制。【结论与意义】总体上,在卵和蛹期,橘小实蝇与番石榴实蝇未产生竞争作用;但不排除蛹期竞争的可能性,这种竞争可能存在于特定的蛹期。  相似文献

The relationship between the quality/quantity of male investment and the feeding behavior of females was investigated in a bruchid weevil, Bruchidius dorsalis (Fahraeus), whose males donate nutrition via seminal fluid to females. Experiments on the effect of feeding regimes of both sexes on the mating frequency of females showed that females mated at a higher frequency if given low-quality food or poor male investment. On the other hand, the experiment that examined the effect of male investment quality on female feeding behavior showed that females receiving the high-quality investment exhibited feeding behavior less often. These results suggest that male investment and feeding behavior play the same role for B. dorsalis females. These experiments also showed that there are sex-related asymmetries in mating and feeding behaviors: females mated more often but males fed more often. Moreover, a field census suggested that only males visited non-host flowers to feed on the pollen and nectar during the non-flowering period of the host plants; females always stayed on the host plants irrespective of the flowering phenology. These results suggest that in B. dorsalis courtship role reversal and sex-specific feeding modes are fairly fixed and obligatory, and that male investment, derived from sexual selection, could affect the feeding behavior and spatial distribution of both sexes, which may have far-reaching impact in various ecological contexts.  相似文献

The role of hoplonemerteans in the ecology of seagrass communities   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1  
Seagrasses of the world harbor a rich and varied fauna, but a review of the literature revealed that little has been done to evaluate the ecological importance of nemerteans in such communities. Monostiliferous hoplonemerteans are common inhabitants of some seagrasses, e.g. eelgrass (Zostera), but generally they are seldom collected or identified or are apparently absent in other species such as schoalgrass (Halodule) or turtlegrass (Thalassia). Nineteen species of hoplonemerteans (four families) have been identified from eelgrass beds around the world; they exist mainly as epifauna, and all except two species are probably suctorial feeders. Some palaeonemerteans (2 species) and heteronemerteans (4 species) are also associated with eelgrass, but mainly as infauna. Suctorial nemerteans (4 species in 3 families) from eelgrass beds located along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States feed in the laboratory on a variety of amphipod species that inhabit eelgrass. Tubicolous species (e.g. Corophium) seem to be preferred. Zygonemertes virescens feeds on nine species of amphipods belonging to six families, and is the only species to feed on isopods (3 species). Analyses of field studies on the occurrence of hoplonemerteans in eelgrass beds in Virginia and New Jersey, along with available information on the food habits of these worms, were used as a basis for demonstrating their potential importance as predators of peracarids in seagrass systems. More careful methods for collecting and identifying worms, continued studies on food preferences and rates of predation, and emphasis on the population dynamics of worms and prey, are recommended in order to evaluate the role of suctorial hoplonemerteans in the ecology of seagrasses.  相似文献

【目的】为研究137Cs辐照前后橘小实蝇雄虫肠道菌群多样性和丰度的变化及其肠道菌群在不同分类阶元上的显著差异物种。【方法】本研究利用IlluminaHiSeq高通量测序技术对辐照组和对照组共6个样品进行测序分析。【结果】变形菌门和厚壁菌门分别以60.38%、24.33%的比例作为橘小实蝇肠道中的优势菌门和次优势菌门,肠杆菌科和肠球菌科分别以60.38%和15.69%作为优势菌科和次优势菌科。米勒氏菌属(Moellerella)、摩根氏菌属(Morganella)、Cosenzaea属、链球菌科未知属和酸热菌属(Acidothermus)是组间显著差异的菌属。【结论】本研究发现橘小实蝇在辐照后的肠道菌群多样性和丰度均有显著性降低,并在目至属等3个分类阶元上找到辐照后具有显著差异的物种,为后期利用差异菌群来改善辐照对橘小实蝇的消极影响及修复辐照损伤提供理论基础。  相似文献

Data are presented from a 16-month study of proboscis monkeys in an area of mixed coastal forest in Sarawak. The population density, social organization, and feeding and ranging behavior are described in detail. Results are compared with those from other primates in an attempt to understand why females of certain species (including proboscis monkeys) transfer between social groups. The scarcity of available food and reasons for the limited habitat preferences of proboscis monkeys are also discussed.  相似文献

Butterflies in the genera Heliconius and Laparus obtain fitness-related benefits from using amino acids derived from pollen. These butterflies have morphological features of the proboscis that facilitate pollen-feeding. Here we investigate behavioral characteristics potentially involved in pollen-gathering. Analysis of four behavioral characters showed that pollen-feeding species manipulate Lantana flowers faster and more thoroughly compared to non-pollen-feeding relatives. Although this suggests that pollen-feeding species are potentially more efficient in harvesting pollen, every butterfly tested successfully removed pollen from Lantana and non-pollen-feeding butterflies generally extracted larger amounts of pollen than Heliconius and Laparus. Morphological characteristics of the proboscis and the production of abundant fluid exudate help keep pollen attached in the proboscis for long periods of time—possibly key to Heliconius' and Laparus' ability to obtain amino acids from pollen. Our results, in concert with those of previous morphological analysis, indicate that behavioral and structural attributes associated with pollen-feeding in Heliconius and Laparus are subtle modifications of widespread butterfly characteristics and raise the question why other butterflies do not use pollen in their diet.  相似文献

【背景】蝇蛹俑小蜂是实蝇类害虫蛹期的一种重要寄生蜂,对压制下一代实蝇类害虫的种群数量具有重要作用,但有关其对不同实蝇害虫的寄生特性尚缺乏研究。【方法】采用"H"型装置和培养皿测定方法,研究了蝇蛹俑小蜂的寄主选择偏好性。【结果】蝇蛹俑小蜂在橘小实蝇蛹和瓜实蝇蛹共存的情况下,偏好在橘小实蝇蛹上停留,且寄生率较高,最高寄生率达61.11%。【结论与意义】本研究为合理利用蝇蛹俑小蜂控制实蝇类害虫提供了理论基础。  相似文献

The morphology and functional anatomy of the mouthparts of pollen wasps (Masarinae, Hymenoptera) are examined by dissection, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, supplemented by field observations of flower visiting behavior. This paper focuses on the evolution of the long suctorial proboscis in pollen wasps, which is formed by the glossa, in context with nectar feeding from narrow and deep corolla of flowers. Morphological innovations are described for flower visiting insects, in particular for Masarinae, that are crucial for the production of a long proboscis such as the formation of a closed, air-tight food tube, specializations in the apical intake region, modification of the basal articulation of the glossa, and novel means of retraction, extension and storage of the elongated parts. A cladistic analysis provides a framework to reconstruct the general pathways of proboscis evolution in pollen wasps. The elongation of the proboscis in context with nectar and pollen feeding is discussed for aculeate Hymenoptera.  相似文献

The predatory behavior of the mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx,Linnaeus 1758), a forestliving baboon, on the bay duiker (Cephalophus dorsalis,Gray 1864) was observed under natural conditions. In the predatory episode, at least two mandrills (one adult female and one adult male) attacked a bay duiker, but no overt aggressive interactions between the attackers occurred during consumption. The estimated predation pattern based on scars—intensive attacking of the head and pulling of the hind legs to eat the thigh muscles first—resembled the predation patterns of captive mandrills observed experimentally. The findings suggest that the predatory behavior is established in mandrills as a feeding behavior pattern as in savanna-living baboons. New data are thus presented which are relevant to the discussion of the origins of hunting behavior in early hominids.  相似文献

Evolution of two novel feeding strategies among caenogastropod molluscs, suspension feeding in calyptraeids such as Crepidula fornicata and predatory feeding with a pleurembolic proboscis among neogastropods, may have both involved elongation of the anterior esophagus. Emergence of predatory feeding with a proboscis is particularly significant because it correlates with the rapid adaptive radiation of buccinoidean and muricoidean neogastropods during the Cretaceous. However, the notion that this important evolutionary transition involved elongation of the anterior esophagus to extend down a long proboscis has been disputed by evidence that it may have been the wall of the buccal cavity that elongated. We undertook a comparative study on foregut morphogenesis during larval and metamorphic development in C. fornicata and in three species of neogastropods with a pleurembolic proboscis to examine the hypothesis that the same region of foregut has elongated in all. We approached this by identifying a conserved marker for the boundary between buccal cavity and anterior esophagus, which was recognizable before the developing foregut showed regional differences in length. A survey of four species of littorinimorph caenogastropods suggested that the site of neurogenic placodes for the buccal ganglia could serve as this marker. Results showed that foregut lengthening in C. fornicata involved elongation posterior to neurogenic placodes for buccal ganglia, an area that corresponded to the anterior esophagus in the other littorinimorphs. However, foregut elongation occurred anterior to neurogenic placodes for buccal ganglia in two buccinoidean and one muricoidean neogastropod. The elongated foregut within the pleurembolic proboscis of these neogastropods qualifies as anterior esophagus only if the definition of the anterior esophagus is expanded to include the dorsal folds that run down the roof of the buccal cavity. Regardless of how the anterior esophagus is defined, comparative developmental data do not support the hypothesis of homology between the elongated adult foregut regions in C. fornicata and in neogastropods with a pleurembolic proboscis.  相似文献

The myiophilous pollination syndrome of stapeliads is investigated. Olfactory stimuli, imitating dung or decaying organic (zoogenic or phytogenic) matter, are used as attractants, together with mimetic colouration and, sometimes mimetic sculpturing. In most species nectar is present. The nectar mainly serves as optical attractant causing brilliance effects, and as visitor guide. However, nectar obviously is also a reward in many species. Flies (Cyclorrhapha:Calyptratae) constitute the most important pollinating group. In the pollination process they carry pollinaria only at the distal parts of their proboscis, never on their legs. No fundamental differences between the pollinator spectra of flowers in habitat and cultivated ones were observed.  相似文献
