SUMMARY. 1. In laboratory predation experiments, predation rates were determined for fourth-instar larvae of the chaoborids (Insecta: Diptera) Mochlonyx sp. and Chaoborus americanus preying on four juvenile instars and adult Daphnia pulex (clone SBL). In the case of Mochlonyx , predation was most intense on second-instar juvenile Daphnia while Chaoborus preyed equally on second and third instars.
2. Mochlonyx and Chaoborus induced an antipredator defence (neck-teeth) which was most frequently expressed in second-instar juvenile Daphnia . Expression of this antipredator phenotype was correlated with a reduced rate of Mochlonyx predation.  相似文献

Observations on the effect of enclosure on zooplankton by introducing two experimental tubes, each holding some 18 000 m3 of water, into a small lake, showed that a limnetic community could be maintained within tubes of this capacity throughout a period of 22 months. Two species, the copepod Diaptomus gracilis and the cladoceran Daphnia hyalina were dominant both in the open lake and in each tube, but Diaptomus gracilis was relatively more abundant in the tubes than in the lake, whereas Daphnia hyalina, especially in spring and autumn, was more abundant in the lake than in the tubes. Several scarce species became relatively more abundant in the tubes than in the lake. These changes are more probably associated with reduced predation, especially by larvae of Chaoborus, than with artificially induced changes in the phytoplankton, changes only poorly correlated with changes in the zooplankton.  相似文献

1. After Chaoborus flavicans became established in 1974, the species composition of zooplankton in Lake Lenore changed. Diaptomus nevadensis disappeared and densities of Diaptomus sicilis were reduced.
2. A transplant experiment showed the D. nevadensis could survive in Lake Lenore water in the absence of Chaoborus . The disappearance of D. nevadensis was probably a consequence of Chaoborus predation.
3. Although densities of Daphnia pulicaria † were similar before and after the colonization of C. flavicans , juvenile D. pulicaria began producing neck-teeth during the first summer Chaoborus was present.
4. The seasonal pattern of neck-teeth production by juvenile D. pilicaria did not correlate with density of Chaoborus but rather with a combination of water temperature and Chaoborus density, suggesting that metabolic processes are a component of induction of neck-teeth in this species.  相似文献

1.  Inducible defences may be temporary and favoured where predation is intermittent and have been demonstrated in several invertebrates and vertebrates when prey detect chemical cues (kairomones) released by predators. Daphnia pulex (a water flea) exposed to Chaoborus (midge larvae) kairomones produce small neckteeth on the dorsal surface of the head as a defence against this gape-limited predator and survive better in the presence of Chaoborus . Recent studies have shown that waterborne copper (Cu) impairs the induction of neckteeth which could lead to lower survival.
2.  Here, we examined the effects of Cu on morphological changes and shifts in life-history traits in D. pulex exposed to kairomone from Chaoborus americanus . We exposed D. pulex mothers to chemical cues of C. americanus fed on either D. pulex neonates or on brine shrimp Artemia salina , the same Chaoborus cues combined with an environmentally relevant concentration of copper (10 μg L−1), or dechlorinated tap water. We examined several morphological characteristics of neonates and life-historical characteristics of adults as well as assessing survival of neonates by staging encounters with predators.
3.  Neonates from mothers exposed to kairomone plus copper had fewer and shorter neckteeth than neonates from mothers exposed to kairomone alone. Moreover, neonates exposed to Cu had lower survival during encounters with predators than neonates exposed to kairomone without Cu.
4.  Adult female Daphnia exposed to kairomones released more neonates within the first 24 h of brood release and emptied their brood pouches quicker than mothers not exposed to kairomones, irrespective of the presence of Cu.

Many prey species evolved inducible defense strategies that protect effectively against predation threats. Especially the crustacean Daphnia emerged as a model system for studying the ecology and evolution of inducible defenses. Daphnia pulex e.g. shows different phenotypic adaptations against vertebrate and invertebrate predators. In response to the invertebrate phantom midge larvae Chaoborus (Diptera) D. pulex develops defensive morphological defenses (neckteeth). Cues originating from predatory fish result in life history changes in which resources are allocated from somatic growth to reproduction. While there are hints that responses against Chaoborus cues are transmitted involving cholinergic neuronal pathways, nothing is known about the neurophysiology underlying the transmission of fish related cues. We investigated the neurophysiological basis underlying the activation of inducible defenses in D. pulex using induction assays with the invertebrate predator Chaoborus and the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus. Predator-specific cues were combined with neuro-effective substances that stimulated or inhibited the cholinergic and gabaergic nervous system. We show that cholinergic-dependent pathways are involved in the perception and transmission of Chaoborus cues, while GABA was not involved. Thus, the cholinergic nervous system independently mediates the development of morphological defenses in response to Chaoborus cues. In contrast, only the inhibitory effect of GABA significantly influence fish-induced life history changes, while the application of cholinergic stimulants had no effect in combination with fish related cues. Our results show that cholinergic stimulation mediates signal transmission of Chaoborus cues leading to morphological defenses. Fish cues, which are responsible for predator-specific life history adaptations involve gabaergic control. Our study shows that both pathways are independent and thus potentially allow for adjustment of responses to variable predation regimes.  相似文献

Daphnia pulex clones originating from twelve small pond habitats were exposed to chemical cues from a size-selective predator, larvae of the phantom midge Chaoborus. Exposure delayed the onset of reproduction and increased the size at first reproduction. On the other hand, the neonates produced by these larger mothers were slightly smaller than the neonates produced by the smaller control mothers. In cladocerans, neonate size is usually positively correlated to the size of the mother. Thus exposure to Chaoborus kairomone apparently had direct effects on neonate size counterbalancing the maternal effects. Daphnia clones collected from Chaoborus-free and Chaoborus-rich environments exhibited different responses. In first adult instar, the clones from Chaoborus inhabited environments increased their offspring size under Chaoborus exposure whereas clones from Chaoborus-free environments did not. This may reflect clonal adaptation to the predation prehistory of their original habitat since larger neonates more quickly reach a size protected from the predator.  相似文献

Summary To examine the relative demographic effects of predation and competition for food in rotifers during spring and summer in an oligotrophic lake, predator and competitor densities and food supplies were experimentally altered inside large enclosures. Abundances of rotifer species were positively correlated with experimental densities of fourth instar Chaoborus trivittatus larvae, a major crustacean predator in 1976. Experimental alteration of the densities of Daphnia rosea and Diaptomus leptopus and D. kenai in 1978 produced highly significant increases in rotifer biomass only under Daphnia removal, but not under copepod removal. Inorganic fertilizer additions to enclosures in 1978 and 1979 revealed minimal rotifer increases unless pulsed additions were large or Daphnia were also excluded. Large demographic reponses of rotifers to low fertilizer loadings in the absence of Daphnia confirmed the pre-eminence of competitive food limitation in producing rotifer scarcity in summer.  相似文献

1. We studied the life history responses of Daphnia pulex under different biotic conditions. In a factorially designed experiment, we tested the impacts of water conditioned by the invertebrate predator Chaoborus, low and high food level (10 000 and 100 000 Scenedesmus cells ml–1), and exposure to toxic Microcystis (5000 cells ml–1) on twelve D. pulex clones originating from different habitats. Our aim was to compare the phenotypic plasticity of different clones, and to study the interactions among biotic factors.
2. Individuals cultured in Chaoborus -conditioned water started to reproduce at a larger size than individuals cultured in water not conditioned by the predators. We found interactions between food level and Chaoborus -conditioned water on age at first reproduction and total offspring number. In addition, the impact of the Chaoborus treatment on the size at first reproduction was reduced by Microcystis exposure.
3. Clonal differences were found in the degree of phenotypic plasticity of different life history traits. However, there was no obvious connection between the original habitat of the clone and the degree of plasticity.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Crop evacuation rates were estimated for the first time in Chaoborus larvae, using natural prey.
2. Fourth instar C. americanus Matheson digested copepods (Diaptomus leptopus S.A. Forbes) 48.7% faster than daphnids (Daphnia rosea Leydig) of similar size; meal size did not significantly affect the instantaneous rate of digestion (IRD) within each prey type. Prey specific IRD has not been reported before for zooplankton.

SUMMARY 1. We used a combination of field surveys and field and laboratory experiments to examine the effects of predatory small-mouthed salamander larvae, Ambystoma barbouri (Kraus and Petranka), on the density and microhabitat use of benthic isopods, Lirceus fontinalis (Rafinesque).
2. A survey of four field stations yielded a significant negative relationship between the densities of salamander larvae and isopods.
3. A field experimental manipulation of salamander density confirmed that salamanders reduce isopod density and isopod use of open micro-habitat. Salamanders did not significantly affect the mean or coefficient of variation in isopod size.
4. A laboratory experiment showed that in the absence of refuges for isopods, salamanders were capable of eating large numbers of isopods; small isopods were particularly vulnerable to salamander predation.  相似文献

Summary Survivorship and growth of larval tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum, in the White Mountains of east-central Arizona were compared in six microhabitats using field enclosures during summers, 1983–85. Microhabitats were vegetated and nonvegetated shallows, surface, middle, and bottom horizontal layers of limnetic areas, and the vertical limnetic water column. Initial enclosure densities (0.025 larvae per 1) were identical among microhabitats. Three enclosures were placed in each microhabitat in two ponds. Larval survivorship and growth were usually greatest in vegetated shallows in lowest in middle and bottom limnetic enclosures, despite several population dieoffs. Lower fitness, as reflected in survivorship and growth, in these latter enclosures was correlated with lower food levels, temperatures, and oxygen concentrations in deeper limnetic areas. Relative fitness varied greatly between years while food levels, temperatures, and oxygen concentrations within microhabitats remained relatively constant indicating additional factors affected fitness. Disparities in fitness between microhabitats apparently affect habitat use patterns of larvae.  相似文献

Low densities of Diaptomus ashlandi, Diacyclops thomasi, and Daphnia galeata mendotae were measured at depths where Mysis relicta formed nighttime aggregations. Calculations suggest that mysid predation can not account for the rarity of prey animals at these depths, which further suggests that the prey avoided the mysids. Unlike D. galeata mendotae, Daphnia pulicaria was common in mysid aggregations. The somewhat larger size of D. pulicaria may reduce its vulnerability to mysid predation, and consequently may explain the vertical distribution differences between the two congeners. Vertical distributions of Limnocalanus macrurus and copepod nauplii showed no obvious relationships to the mysid distributions. These were the only two taxa with distributions that were correlated with chlorophyll a concentrations. All crustacean taxa were rare in the epilimnion at night when sonar recorded a dense fish school.  相似文献

1.  Seasonal dynamics, spatial distribution and population size of the phantom midge Chaoborus flavicans in different parts of the eutrophic Lake Hiidenvesi (30.3 km2) were studied.
2.  Density of larvae was low in the shallow, most eutrophic parts of the lake, while the deep Kiihkelyksenselkä basin was inhabited by a dense population. In the deepest part of Kiihkelyksenselkä (33 m) density was 13 989 ± 3542 m–2 in May, declined to 1102 ± 274 m–2 in July and recovered to 7225 ± 1314 m–2 by October. In spring and autumn the majority of larvae were benthic while, during high summer, few larvae were found in the sediment.
3.  Horizontal distribution fluctuated seasonally. On 3 June < 5% of the population inhabited areas shallower than 10 m. On 6 July the limnetic fraction was still restricted to regions deeper than 10 m, but 43% of benthic larvae were found between 6 and 10 m depths. In October both limnetic and benthic larvae were concentrated in areas deeper than 20 m.
4.  Within the lake, distribution was mainly regulated by stratification characteristics, degree of eutrophy being less important. The seasonal horizontal movements were probably induced by food shortage. Larvae could not meet their energetic demands in stratified areas and dispersed to shallower water, reducing predation risk by use of the benthic habitat.  相似文献

Declines in amphibian populations and the loss of some species has spurred research into the causes of declines. Little research has been done on what the loss of amphibian species may mean to ecosystem function. I describe a field experiment where the number of Plethodon cinereus (the red-backed salamander) was manipulated in enclosures buried in the forest floor. I determined the composition of the forest floor invertebrate community and the rate of decomposition of leaf litter in enclosures with and without salamanders over 4.5 months. Salamander predation in enclosures significantly reduced invertebrate numbers compared to control enclosures. Salamander predation also indirectly reduced rate of decomposition by between 11 and 17%. This was probably due to salamanders consuming a significant number of leaf fragmenters (e.g. Coleoptera and Diptera larvae). Predation on leaf litter fragmenters may alter carbon dynamics in forested ecosystems.  相似文献

1. Data on the distributions of pelagic and benthic Chaoborus flavicans larvae were gathered in 1994 and tested for their agreement with the predator avoidance hypotheses. The development of all Chaoborus life stages, as well as the horizontal and vertical distribution in the four larval instars, was followed from May until October. We expected the largest larvae to dwell deeper by day, thus avoiding predation by visually foraging fish.
2. In agreement with this prediction body size increased with daytime depth, and this was true both between and within instars. The migration amplitude consequently increased with larval instar.
3. There was also evidence for horizontal migration, mainly in the third but also in the fourth instar.
4. Along a horizontal transect with increasing depth, locations with many benthic larvae had fewer pelagic larvae. Oxygen concentration was a good predictor of maximum benthic larval depth for most of the season but failed to predict their distribution in autumn.  相似文献

Summary Predation rates for Chaoborus americanus on different types of noncyclomorphic zooplankton prey were determined in the laboratory as a function of both prey species and density. The sequence of events leading to consumption of prey was also observed, and probabilities determined for the various components.Predation rates generally reached an upper limit as the density of prey increased to high levels. Larger prey were always less vulnerable to Chaoborus predation. Among the species of zooplankton prey examined Holopedium gibberum suffered the lowest rates of predation, while those of the other plankters (Daphnia pulex, D. rosea, Moina hutchinsoni, Diaptomus birgei, D. leptopus, Cyclops vernalis) were approximately equivalent for any given size category.Observation of the predatory sequence indicates that for all the plankters except H. gibberum there were relatively high rates of evasion of attack by C. americanus and low rates of escape after capture. For H. gibberum the situation was reversed, and escape after capture was particularly important in determining the predation rate.The gelatinous envelope of Holopedium gibberum seems to operate as an effective anti-predator device which reduces the likelyhood of retention by Chaoborus after contact has been made.  相似文献

An enclosure study was conducted in Ranger Lake in south-central Ontario, Canada from 4 July to 5 August 1997 to determine predation effects of the larvae of the phantom midge fly Chaoboruson the zooplankton community. Zooplankton assemblages were established in 12 enclosures (2 m in diameter, 7.5 m deep). Three densities of fourth-instar Chaoborus trivittatus (0 l–1, 0.1 l–1 and 0.5 l–1) were introduced as predator treatments to the enclosures. Temperature, dissolved oxygen and zooplankton community composition were monitored for six weeks. To determine if the zooplankton community composition changed, a repeated measures multivariate analysis was performed on percent biomass of Bosmina and calanoid copepods. There were no significant differences in mean taxon percent biomass among predator treatments. There were significant differences in mean taxon percent biomass between water layers (epilimnion and metalimnion). There were also significant differences in lengths of Bosmina and calanoid copepods among predator treatments at the end of the experiment. Crop content analysis of C. trivittatusshowed that Bosmina constituted 88–98% of the prey items found in the crops. These results demonstrate that the use of deep enclosures, a Chaoborus species which vertically migrates, and lower natural densities of Chaoborus may provide prey with an important natural refuge from predation and so allow a more accurate determination of the predation impact of Chaoborus trivittatusin temperate lakes where fish control Chaoborus densities.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Adults of the calanoid copepod, Epischura nevadensis , aggregate in situ near the thermocline in Lake Tahoe, California-Nevada. together with adults of another species of calanoid copepod, Diaptomus tyrelli and juveniles of both species. With a series of laboratory predation and algal clearance trials, we show that foraging rates of adult E. nevadensis are determined not only by the density of co-occurring potential prey (small copepods), but also by the presence of co-occurring non-prey neighbours (large, adult copepods). These effects occur at densities and in zooplankton assemblages found naturally, emphasizing the ecological importance of neighbours other than prey on zooplankton feeding.
2. Neighbours are distinguished primarily by size. Although predation rates increase linearly with the densities of small copepods. both algal clearance and predation rates decrease in the presence of large copepods. We also show, with a field predation experiment using small enclosures, that adults are size selective within species and that Diaptomus are selected over conspecifics of the same size.
3. We hypothesize that by reducing foraging rates in the presence of large zooplankton. E. nevadensis avoids predators and reduces predation risk at the cost of reduced energy consumption.  相似文献

The zooplankters Daphnia pulex, Diaptomus siciloides, Diaptomus clavipes and Acanthocyclops vernalis were manipulated in outdoor tanks (1 m3) for long term (six months) experiments. There were distinct patterns of variability among the species which were mostly independent of treatment effects (e.g. fish predation intensity, in one experiment). Diaptomus showed greater within-treatment variability (coefficient of variation CV = 1.2) than did Acanthocyclops and Daphnia (CV = 0.5). The extinction of calanoids in some tanks was partly responsible for this variability. Acanthocyclops and Daphnia never were extinct, but did occasionally colonize (contaminate) tanks to which they had not been intentionally introduced. Colonization and extinction events were related to reproductive characteristics of the species involved, which also determine the minimum critical densities necessary for population establishment and persistence.Manipulation of zooplankters in outdoor enclosures must take into account the species life histories, reproductive mode and behaviour. Species must be inoculated in numbers larger than their minimum critical densities and measures must be taken to avoid contamination with unwanted species. We studied variation in small-scale swimming behavior (SSB)in four clones of Daphnia galeata (water flea) in response topredator infochemicals. The aim of this study was 3-fold. First,we tested for differences in SSB in Daphnia; second, we examinedthe potential of differences in SSB to explain survival probabilityunder predation; and third we tested the effect of differencesin SSB on survival under predation. Four treatments were applied:one kairomone-free control, one Chaoborus- (phantom midge) andone Perca (perch)-conditioned treatment, and a mixed treatmentcontaining both infochemicals. All of the three tested behavioralparameters (swimming speed, trajectory length and vertical distribution)were affected by the presence of the Chaoborus infochemical,and swimming speed and vertical distribution were also affectedby the presence of Perca infochemical. The effect of the treatmentwas interfered with by a clone effect: genetic differences werepronounced in all traits. These results illustrate that clonescan be responsive in only a subset of traits. The general theorythat clones are either responsive or non-responsive is not validfor SSB. The outcome of the predation trial confirms that adecrease in activity is a main factor in lowering Daphnia vulnerabilityto Chaoborus predation.  相似文献
