This study aimed to evaluate variations in the seed bank within a 3-year temporal series in order to answer the following questions: 1) Does the seed bank's species richness and seed density differ among climatic seasons and between years? 2) Are there differences in the richness and density of seed banks between the litter and mineral soil? 3) Can the seed bank's species richness and seed density be explained by characteristics such as the previous year's precipitation and soil depth (litter or mineral soil)? The samples were collected from litter and mineral soil (0–5 cm), in 210 sub-plots, during the dry and rainy seasons of each year (August 2005 through February 2008). Overall, 79 species were recorded. On average, 1 168, 304 and 302 seeds.m−2 were recorded in the seed bank during years I, II and III, respectively. This study showed that the Caatinga's seed bank is rich in herbaceous species, yet species' density and richness are low in the litter. Furthermore, about 43% of the variation in species richness and density was explained by soil depth (litter and mineral soil) and previous years' rainfall.  相似文献

The ‘family consent’ process has been placed at the centre of Chinese clinical practice. Although there has been critical analysis of how the process functions in relation to the autonomy and rights of patients, there has been little examination of the perceptions and attitude of patients and their families and the medical professionals, in relation to moral dilemmas that arise in real cases in the bioethical discourse. When faced with a consent form in an emergency situation, the family member's capacity to act is reduced, as he/she becomes enmeshed in the hospital structure of tacit, socially‐imposed rules. In a questionnaires based on a real death case in 2008, 70.9% of the surveyed medical professionals (n = 3,665) disagreed with performing surgery without the consent of the family even if the patient's life was in danger, while 36.6% of the surveyed patients (n = 1,198) hold the same position. This work demonstrates the weakness of the family consent process as a safeguard of patient's autonomy. Finally, I argue that saving the patient's life should be the overriding obligation rather than the respect for the surrogate's autonomous choice at such a decisive moment.  相似文献

The temporal changes of compression stimuli exerted by baby on the areola-nipple complex during the entire suckling period were investigated in 6 mother-baby pairs of the 4-6-day lactation. It was found that compression stimuli had a triangle form. The duration of the stimuli and inter-stimuli interval varied from 0.3 s to 0.8 s and from 0.1 s to 0.25 s, respectively. The compression stimuli were organized in bursts and a pause of variable duration between the bursts. The mean frequency of the compression stimuli in the bursts was within the range 0.9 imp/s-1.7 imp/s. The average frequency of the entire suckling period in babies was within the range 0.9 +/- 0.3 imp/s-1.1 +/- 0.1 imp/s. Implications of these findings in the suckling neonates are discussed.  相似文献

The most studied ecogeographic rule is Bergmann's rule, but aspects of the original paper are often presented incorrectly even though Bergmann (1847) is explicitly cited. The goal of this paper is to 1) summarize the contents of Bergmann's paper, supported by direct translations, and 2) to discuss the main issues surrounding Bergmann's rule based on Bergmann's intentions and early definitions of the rule. Although Bergmann himself never formulated an explicit rule, based on Bergmann's (1847) intentions and early definitions of Bergmann's rule, Bergmann's rule is: “Within species and amongst closely related species of homeothermic animals a larger size is often achieved in colder climates than in warmer ones, which is linked to the temperature budget of these animals.” Bergmann (1847) assumed that the surface area of an animal is a measure for heat dissipation and an animal's volume a measure of its heat production. As body size increases, an animal's surface area increases less than its volume; however, modifications in morphology and behaviour will also influence the temperature budget. Bergmann hypothesized that when everything but size is equal, the smaller animals should live in warmer areas. This was supported by empirical data on > 300 bird species belonging to 86 genera. Recommendations for use of the term Bergmann's rule include 1) inclusion of a thermoregulatory mechanism, 2) application only to homoeothermic animals, 3) but to any taxonomic group, 4) tests of the rule should test the assumption that larger animals have to produce less heat to increase body temperatures, and 5) future authors should either go back to the original publication (Bergmann 1847) when referring to it or simply not cite it at all. The interplay between a receiver's sensory system and a sender's courtship signals is fundamental to the operation of sexual selection. Male courtship signals that match a female receiver's preexisting perceptual biases can be favored yet the message they communicate is not always clear. Do they simply beacon the male's location or also indicate his quality? We explored this question in a species of fiddler crab Uca terpsichores that courts under elevated predation risk and that mates and breeds underground in the safety of males' burrows. Sexually receptive females leave their own burrows and are thereby exposed to avian predators as they sequentially approach several courting males before they choose one. Males court by waving their single greatly enlarge claw and sometimes by building a sand hood next to their burrow entrance. Hoods are attractive because they elicit a risk‐reducing orientation behavior in females, and it has been suggested that claw waving may also serve primarily to orient the female to the male. If the wave communicates male quality, then females should discriminate mates on the basis of variation in elements of the wave, as has been shown for other fiddler crabs. Alternatively, variation in elements of the claw waving display may have little effect on the display's utility as a beacon of the location of the male and his burrow. We filmed courting males and females under natural conditions as females responded to claw waving and chose mates. Analysis of the fine‐scale courtship elements between the males that females rejected and those they chose revealed no differences. When predation risk during courtship is high, males' courtship displays may serve primarily to guide females to safe mating and breeding sites and not as indicators of male quality apart from their roles as beacons.  相似文献

In this article, we summarize Arabidopsis genes encoding ubiquitin, ubiquitin-activating enzyme (E1), ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2s) and an additional selected set of proteins related to ubiquitylation. We emphasize comparisons to components from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with occasional reference to animals. Among the E1 and E2s, Arabidopsis usually has two to four probable orthologs to one yeast gene. Also, Arabidopsis has genes with no likely ortholog in yeast, although they often have potential orthologs in animals. The large number of components with known function in ubiquitylation indicates that this process plays a complex role in cellular physiology.  相似文献

A minor chorion protein (called s70) with an approximate molecular weight of 70,000 D has been characterized in Drosophila melanogaster. The Staket geographic strain was found to carry an electrophoretic variant of this eggshell component and was used to determine the chromosomal location of the s70 gene. Our results establish a new locus for a chorion gene near yellow on the X chromosome and represent the first mapping of a quantitatively minor eggshell protein.  相似文献

Genomics is the study of an organism’s entire genome. It started out as a great scientific endeavor in the 1990s which aimed to sequence the complete genomes of certain biological species. However viruses are not new to this field as complete viral genomes have routinely been sequenced since the past thirty years. The ‘genomic era’ has been said to have revolutionized biology. This knowledge of full genomes has created the field of functional genomics in today’s post-genomic era, which, is in most part concerned with the studies on the expression of the organism’s genome under different conditions. This review aims to describe changes in breastfeeding and summarise the breastfeeding rates, duration and reasons of discontinuing 'any breastfeeding' or 'exclusive breastfeeding' in P.R. China. Breastfeeding rates in China fell during the 1970s when the use of breast milk substitutes became widespread, and reached the lowest point in the 1980s. As a result many efforts were introduced to promote breastfeeding. The breastfeeding rate in China started to increase in the 1990s, and since the mid-1990s 'any breastfeeding' rates in the majority of cities and provinces, including minority areas, have been above 80% at four months. But most cities and provinces did not reach the national target of 'exclusive breastfeeding' of 80%. The 'exclusive breastfeeding' rates in minority areas were relatively lower than comparable inland provinces. The mean duration of 'any breastfeeding' in the majority of cities or provinces was between seven and nine months. The common reasons for ceasing breastfeeding, or introducing water or other infant food before four months, were perceived breast milk insufficiency, mother going to work, maternal and child illness and breast problems. Incorrect traditional perceptions have a strong adverse influence on 'exclusive breastfeeding' in less developed areas or rural areas. China is a huge country, geographically and in population size, and there is considerable ethnic diversity. Therefore breastfeeding rates in different parts of China can vary considerably.  相似文献

Many species of bird recognize acoustic and visual cues given by their predators and have complex defence adaptations to reduce predation risk. Recognition of threats posed by specific predators and specialized anti‐predation behaviours are common. In this study we investigated predator recognition and anti‐predation behaviours in a pelagic seabird, Leach's Storm‐petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa, at a site where predation risk from Great Skuas Stercorarius skua is exceptionally high. Leach's Storm‐petrels breed in burrows and come on land only at night. Counter‐predator adaptations were investigated correlatively in relation to changing natural light levels at night, and experimentally in relation to nocturnal visual and acoustic signals from Great Skuas. Colony attendance by Leach's Storm‐petrels was attuned to changes in light conditions at night and was highest when nights were darkest. This behaviour is likely to reduce predation risk on land; however, specific recognition of Great Skuas and specialized defence behaviours were not found. Leach's Storm‐petrels, in particular apparently non‐breeding individuals, were entirely naïve to the threat posed by Great Skuas and were captured easily in a variety of different ways, on the ground and in the air. Lack of specialized behavioural adaptations in Leach's Storm‐petrels against Great Skuas may be because spatial overlap of breeding distributions of these species appears to be a rare and recent phenomenon.  相似文献

Bergmann's rule originally described a positive relationship between body size and latitude in warm‐blooded animals. Larger animals, with a smaller surface/volume ratio, are better enabled to conserve heat in cooler climates (thermoregulatory hypothesis). Studies on endothermic vertebrates have provided support for Bergmann's rule, whereas studies on ectotherms have yielded conflicting results. If the thermoregulatory hypothesis is correct, negative relationships between body size and temperature should occur in temporal in addition to geographical gradients. To explore this possibility, we analysed seasonal activity patterns in a bee fauna comprising 245 species. In agreement with our hypothesis of a different relationship for large (endothermic) and small (ectothermic) species, we found that species larger than 27.81 mg (dry weight) followed Bergmann's rule, whereas species below this threshold did not. Our results represent a temporal extension of Bergmann's rule and indicate that body size and thermal physiology play an important role in structuring community phenology.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of breakdown and the initial stage of a discharge in a long tube (with an interelectrode distance of 40 cm and a diameter of 2.8 cm) at a pressure of ~1 Torr and pulse discharge current of ~10 mA. Breakdown was produced by positive voltage pulses with a linearly growing leading edge with a steepness of dU/dt ~ 106–108 V/s. The time interval between pulses was varied from τ = 0.5 ms to 1 s, the pulse duration being 10 ms. The work was aimed at studying the memory effect of the discharge gap, namely, the influence of the previous pulse on the breakdown characteristics of the next one. In the experiments, the breakdown voltage was measured at different values of dU/dt and τ. It was found that the memory effect was absent at τ ~ 1 s. At the same time, an increase in the breakdown voltage with increasing dU/dt was observed. In the range of τ ≈ 50–200 ms, the breakdown voltage also did not depend on τ, but the memory effect took place. The memory effect in this case consisted in that the breakdown voltage decreased with increasing dU/dt, so that, at dU/dt ~ 107 V/s, the breakdown voltage was two times lower than in the case of τ ~ 1 s. For τ ~ 1–10 ms, the memory effect manifested itself in that the breakdown voltage depended on τ: it could either decrease (the “normal” effect) or increase (the “anomalous” effect) with increasing τ. Breakdown of the discharge gap was preceded by the propagation of an ionization wave, except for the case of small τ values in the domain of existence of the anomalous effect. Estimates allowing one to qualitatively explain the experimental results are made.  相似文献

Frankia strain CcI3 grown in culture produced a hemoglobin which had optical absorption bands typical of a hemoglobin and a molecular mass of 14.1 kDa. Its equilibrium oxygen binding constant was 274 nM, the oxygen dissociation rate constant was 56 s(-1), and the oxygen association rate constant was 206 microM(-1) s(-1).  相似文献

The first year''s experience of a satellite colposcopy clinic in the Glasgow Family Planning Centre was analysed. Establishment of the clinic was supervised by an experienced member of the colposcopy team at the department of gynaecology, Western Infirmary, Glasgow, who trained one of the family planning centre''s staff. Close links were thus maintained with the hospital clinic to which patients were referred for treatment. The policy at the new colposcopy clinic was to study prospectively all women in the hospital catchment area whose cervical smears were reported as abnormal. In 58 of 162 such patients there was at least moderate dyskaryosis and the cytologist''s recommendation had been referral for colposcopy. In 104 cases the changes were either atypia alone or mild dyskaryosis and a repeat smear was recommended within three to 12 months; 18 of these patients had grade II or III cervical intraepithelial neoplasia on biopsy, and relying on repeat smears would have resulted in an 11.7% false negative rate. If an atypical cytological picture is to be an indication for colposcopy clinics attached to family planning centres may have an important role, given satisfactory training and close links with central specialist colposcopy clinics.  相似文献

I derive an approximate formula relating the average time to extinction of a population in a varying environment to its initial size, its equilibrium size (if it is self-regulated), its innate capacity for natural increase, and the impact upon it of environmental variation. The greater the impact of environmental variation, the more slowly a population's prospective lifetime increases with increase in its equilibrium size. The lifetimes of populations greatly influenced by environmental variation are more sensitive to the relative amplitude of fluctuation in their numbers than to their equilibrium size. Since species tend to avoid competitive displacement by specializing, rendering themselves more sensitive to environmental change, and since populations are no more likely to risk extinction in one environment than in another, the degree to which a community's populations fluctuate will be unrelated to environmental stability.  相似文献

This work describes for the first time the identification of a reaction intermediate, C4a-hydroperoxyflavin, during the oxidative half-reaction of a flavoprotein oxidase, pyranose 2-oxidase (P2O) from Trametes multicolor, by using rapid kinetics. The reduced P2O reacted with oxygen with a forward rate constant of 5.8 x 10 (4) M (-1) s (-1) and a reverse rate constant of 2 s (-1), resulting in the formation of a C4a-hydroperoxyflavin intermediate which decayed with a rate constant of 18 s (-1). The absorption spectrum of the intermediate resembled the spectra of flavin-dependent monooxygenases. A hydrophobic cavity formed at the re side of the flavin ring in the closed state structure of P2O may help in stabilizing the intermediate.  相似文献

The ability to destroy a particular protein at a particular time is central to the regulation of many cellular processes. Selective proteolysis in eukaryotic cells is carried out primarily by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Attachment of a ubiquitin polymer to an unwanted protein causes it to be degraded by the proteasome. Several classes of enzyme, known as E1s, E2s and E3s, control the stepwise formation of a ubiquitin-protein conjugate. The specificity of substrate selection lies with the E2s and E3s. Here we describe the cloning of a Drosophila E2 gene, UbcD4, which is only expressed in embryos. Its expression pattern in stage 10-11 embryos suggests a role in germ cell development. UbcD4 can interact with the polyubiquitin-binding subunit of the proteasome.  相似文献

The weevil Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder & Sands 1985 (Family: Curculionidae) is a highly effective biocontrol agent for the invasive water fern Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell (Family: Salviniaceae). The life histories of both organisms are affected by temperature, making the potential impacts of climate change on efficacy of control an important area in which comprehensive understanding is required. Here we use warming tolerance (WT) and low temperature tolerance (LTT) as measures of C. salviniae’s sensitivity to climate warming, calculated across South Africa using critical thermal limits, lethal temperature limits and mean maximum (Tmax) and minimum (Tmin) environmental temperatures under present climatic conditions and two future periods (2040s and 2080s). From the present climate to the 2080s the WTs of C. salviniae decrease and LTTs increase indicating C. salviniae may face greater constraints on survival as Tmax nears the upper thermal limits, but increased population persistence over cool months as Tmin increases.  相似文献

A glass airlift fermenter, 1550 ml working volume, was used for microbiological transformation of phytosterols. A gas hold-up of 1.6% was observed with the lowest superficial gas velocity (1.89 cm/s). The volumetric liquid circulation rate remained relatively constant (0.21 l/s to 0.23 l/s) for superficial gas velocity values up to 11.37 cm/s. A 72% conversion of sitosterol to 1,4-androstadiene-3,17-dione was obtained.  相似文献
